WELCOME CONTOUR FASHION at De Montfort University has maintained a global reputation for developing generations of intimate apparel designers and communicators. As the course celebrates its 75th Year and we are delighted to showcase our class of 2022 graduates who demonstrate aesthetic design awareness, technological excellence and innovation in the fields of lingerie, corsetry, swimwear, nightwear, loungewear, menswear, sportswear, athleisure and medical applications. Through nurturing their talent and creativity, we encourage our students not to just meet expectations, but to challenge and exceed them. This is supported by our affiliations with industry partners, aligning to the development of sustainable practice and industry relevant skills. Our graduates are employed across the globe as designers, technical specialists and communicators. The class of 2022 have made us particularly proud due to their resilience and adaptation within a constantly changing landscape in response to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Throughout the periods of on-line teaching and learning , our students swiftly rose to the challenge and maintained their innate determination to achieve outstanding results of which we, as a staff team, are immensely proud. Highlights Working with Industry - LOUNGE UNDERWEAR EXTERNAL CLIENT PROJECT 2022 Lounge Underwear was established in 2015, and have DMU Graduates amongst their product design team. The brand has a mission to deliver ‘Comfort Made Sexy’ and now have two million followers on Instagram. The final year students were set a live brief by Lounge to design a six-piece collection for spring/summer 22 considering sustainable design principles, new consumer trends and innovative fabrications. Fifteen finalists were invited to the brand’s headquarters in Birmingham to present their collections and show their constructed outfits, as well as to enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of their new working office space. Issy wowed the judges with a technically advanced and feminine mastectomy collection, inspired by Orchids, earning her a six-month internship at Lounge which she will start after graduating this summer. “We have completed this project feeling inspired. Each and every student has put so much effort into the Lounge project from start to finish. From the initial idea to the technicalities everything was carefully considered and brilliantly executed. We are all about every woman, representation is our core mission and it’s safe to say this is exactly what the girls did. Innovation was at the heart of so many designs from Maternity ranges to Stoma bag representation and even mastectomy collections were executed to a high standard. All students thought outside the box and brought something new to us & we absolutely love to see it! Highlights Fashanne Awards 2022 Initiated by BBC East Midlands Today news anchor Anne Davies, the Fashanne regional awards are an annual highlight. MET GALA This second year project channels innate innovation and potential into a variance of contour products and encourages freedom of choice alongside a wider creative spirit. Working with Industry - JOHN LEWIS SECOND YEAR PROJECT This was an exciting promotional 2-D project capturing sustainability and innovation within a commercial arena. Students presented to the client which secured a great opportunity to share their personal creative progression with reflective industry support. Mark Finerty, (Category Design Lead at John Lewis – Swimwear, Underwear & Nightwear) provided invaluable feedback to promote industry-aligned design development of student outcomes. CONTOUR FASHION INNOVATION MA PROGRAMME 2021 marked the graduation of our first cohort of Contour Fashion Innovation Masters students, who produced exceptional work and who showed that the scope of research within our subject is wide and far-reaching. Each specialist study tackled at least one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which as an institution we are particularly proud of and committed to serving. Thank you to all who helped us to celebrate their successes at our Main Gallery exhibition in February and last month’s Fashion Month exhibition at LCB Depot and for the fantastic feedback we received.
2021 also saw us welcome our new cohort of Masters students who are currently entering the consolidation stage of their study. We have such interesting work in progress this year, including various developments in performance sportswear, circular design innovation and adaptable clothing. Highlights DMU MEDICAL HEIF FUNDING FOR RESEARCH INTO BODY METRICS HEIF funding (from the Higher Education Innovation Fund, part of UK Research and Innovation) has been granted to Contour’s Rachel Toner and Catherine Livingstone, alongside Dr Hossein Malekmohamadi from DMU’s AI department for research into size and support through recording body metrics. Further works into size, shape, fit and demographic will support a longer term research project designed to support the Contour sector. DMU MEDICAL FORUM In 2021, a research group led by Associate Professor Gillian Proctor also won funding from HEIF, and was used to conduct a preliminary study into existing swim and underwear garments, as part of DMU Medical Forum’s initiatory project to address and improve user experience of post-surgical Mastectomy and Lumpectomy garments. Research assistants were employed from both the Contour Fashion Innovation Masters and the Contour Fashion Bachelors programmes to help set up and categorise a working product library. The work provides a comprehensive background for this project and next steps will be announced later in the year.
