WELCOME TO DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY CONTOUR FASHION
Contour Fashion at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has been the driving force behind innovative solutions in the wider arena of intimate apparel through advances in fabric technology, garment production and manufacturing methodologies. The course benefits from strong relationships with influential industry partners including the Intimate Apparel Institute, an advisory body that works to promote education, innovation, ecological and health issues and research for the future of the industry. Celebrations for our 70th anniversary last year saw international alumni events held in Paris, Berlin, New York and Hong Kong, and a fabulous Degree Show launch in The Gallery of our landmark Vijay Patel Building. A commemorative film - 70 Years of Contour Fashion – was made with award-winning production company Short Form Film Co and a commemorative exhibition -70 Years of Evolution and Design: Contour Fashion - is being held in the Heritage Centre on campus, which includes archival pieces from R & W.H. Symington & Co Ltd. As an acknowledged leader in creative education, we work tirelessly to give our students a rich and rewarding experience. With our support, they realise their full potential and are well-prepared for the workplace. We engage with global fashion houses, retailers, manufacturers, suppliers, models and musicians to inspire our
students to meet the demands of industry and to realise their creative aspirations. By nurturing their talent and creativity, we encourage our students not to just meet expectations, but to exceed them. We produce outstanding graduates in aesthetic design innovation and technological excellence in the fields of lingerie, corsetry, nightwear, menswear, sportswear and loungewear. We are proud to have educated key industry players for major international companies. Our graduates are employed by Stretchline, Clover International Hong Kong, Heidi Klein, Coco de Mer, Curvy Kate, Edge O’ Beyond, H&M Sweden, Tesco, Gainway, Haddow, Calvin Klein New York, Tutti Rouge, Ace Style, Bravissimo, Tommy Hilfiger Amsterdam, PD China, Gossard and Concepts Paris. Others have established own brand labels such as Nichole de Carle, Lascivious, Tattoo,
Nicole Gill, Reckless Wolf, By Elena, Biondi Couture, Betty Blue, Lorna Drew, Karolina Laskowska and Elissa Poppy. This academic year we have launched our brand new Contour Fashion (Communication) BA (Hons) aimed specifically at the intimate apparel industry. On behalf of our graduating students from Contour Fashion BA (Hons), I am delighted to showcase the experience of a lifetime through their skills, creativity and innovation.
CELEBRATING ‘70 YEARS OF EVOLUTION AND DESIGN: CONTOUR FASHION’ AT THE CUTTING EDGE
Exhibition at The Heritage Centre, DMU, Leicester City Campus. Compiled by Elizabeth Wheelband, Heritage Centre Curator, Sarah Nicol, Collections Engagement Officer and Associate Professor, Gillian Proctor.
DMU teamed up with Leicestershire Museums Service to produce an exhibition celebrating the history of R & W.H. Symington & Co Ltd corsetieres and the development of the Contour Fashion course established by the Corsetry Guild of Great Britain in 1947. The exhibition gives an insight into corsetry, foundationwear and swimwear, supported by advertising material, photographs, factory equipment and recorded memories from the Symington archives. In addition, it gives a snapshot of the course through the decades to the present day featuring contemporary student garments. The exhibition is held in the Heritage Centre, on DMU’s campus until June 2018.

Contour Fashion BA (Hons) became the first course to launch its Degree Show in The Gallery in the Vijay Patel Building in celebration of our 70th Anniversary. The show featured a dedicated vintage space displaying images, brochures and garments of student work from the 1940s right through to the present day. It was notable for its hanging mannequins, featuring work from every 2017 graduate of the course. Visitors were able to view the 2017 London Catwalk Show, the Project Number 9 Technical film and the first ever London Catwalk Show in 2016. Congratulations to staff member Laurie Truscott for her conception of the event.

Every year, 62,000 people in the UK are told they have breast cancer, and every year more than 11,400 women die from the disease. It’s the most common cancer affecting women in the UK today, not to mention one of the fastest-growing. It’s vital that Breast Cancer Care’s services remain free; they’re a lifeline for the growing number of women coping with one of the most difficult challenges they will ever face. But they can’t do this without your help.

CLOVER INTERNATIONAL VISIT, HONG KONG
ASOS DESIGN COMPETITION
The external client project is run in conjunction with ASOS and Underlines Magazine. Pam Scott, editor of Underlines, and her team select their pick of the up-and-coming class of 2018.
DMU alumni who work for Clover, a truly global company, in Hong Kong
It’s not unusual to hear about graduates from DMU Contour Fashion course securing brilliant jobs with global brands. In Hong Kong the university boasts ten alumni all working for the same company - Clover Group International Ltd. They secured their jobs at Clover thanks to its close ties with DMU’s Contour Fashion course, which sees students offered incredible internships with the Hong Kong giant. Current Contour Fashion students joined hundreds of others from DMU for a six-day cultural and academic trip to Hong Kong in March. Students visited Clover Headquarters where, hosted by CEO Angie Lau, they were given a tour of the facilities and met with the DMUdominated team. They learned about Clover’s ten-year partnership with DMU, which has resulted in the employment of a significant number of our graduates over time. #DMUglobal trips give students a fascinating insight into the high-end and mass-market fashion industry
WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF LEATHERSELLARS AWARD Won by Sophie Welborn, with a £500 prize. Her printed and pleated suede and leather athleisure collection is inspired by the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai. Pleating by Ciment Pleating, London.
