HIGHLIGHTS OF 2020/21 CONTOUR FASHION INNOVATION MA PROGRAMME

WORKING WITH INDUSTRY

The first cohort of MA Contour Fashion Innovation students have shown ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness in the wake of a challenging year. Led by Catherine Livingstone, cutting edge final research projects are underway within technical, medical, heritage and sustainable specialisms.

Final-year students were asked to choose between briefs set by two leading industry brands Gymshark and Lounge Underwear. The briefs asked students to design a sustainable collection that embodied the brand ethos and present their ideas to a panel of industry experts,

Lounge Underwear, was established in 2015, and have DMU Contour Fashion graduates amongst their product design team. The brand’s mission is to deliver ‘Comfort Made Sexy’ and now have two million followers on Instagram. Georgia Haffenden was awarded first prize for her ‘Lounge-Erie’ collection.

Zoe Lockett scooped first prize for her collection for Gymshark, which included a reversible sports bra, jacket and running shorts with reflective elements for an added safety feature.

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES

JOHN LEWIS SECOND YEAR PROJECT

Zoe Lockett Issey Graham Ellie Jones

Highly Commended: Dahlia Branch, Hannah Scott This second- year project channels creativity into a contour product, with final designs presented to an industry panel. The final outcomes were judged by the Creative Director, Jessica Prebble, Commercial Director, Mark Pyne and Marketing Coordinator from Tutti Rouge, part of the Starkers Group.

This was an exciting 2D/promotional project, centring upon innovation and sustainability within a commercial arena. Students had an interim on-line visit and presentations to the client, which was a wonderful opportunity to share their creative processes with industry support.

“Having now worked with DMU for a third year, we’ve found the talent existing within the final year cohort allows us as a brand to understand what the future of the contour designers looks like.’’

“‘ I am not given to superlatives, but today saw some of the best work we have seen in eight years of judging! Students have sewn at home on domestic machines, embraced the technology of remote tutoring whilst proving resourceful and committed. Those who were recognised with a place or commendation should be truly proud, as the competition was tough, with real depth in the quality of project submissions. One sincerely hopes no other year will be like this one, but the students rallied against adversity and we highly commend the class of 21”’.

“What a talented bunch of humans! Watching them go from understanding the brief, developing designs, making sustainable connections and bringing their inspired thoughts to life, it’s magic to experience with these young fresh minds that are so ready to take on a challenge.’’ “We’re thrilled to have such an authentic relationship with DMU.”

FASHANNE AWARDS 2021

DMU MEDICAL FORUM

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Initiated by BBC East Midlands Today news anchor Anne Davies, the Fashanne regional awards are an annual highlight. This year 3 Contour Fashion students have been nominated for awards. Good luck to:

The Medical Forum like everything else recently, was forced to temporarily halt plans due to the pandemic, but access to Higher Education Innovation Fund enabled the purchase of an Ultrasonic bonding machine for the school. This has proved to be invaluable in supporting student collections and will be a key factor in new product development.

Due to the restrictions this year, showcasing for 2021 was reconsidered. A ‘Behind Closed Doors’ fashion show took place at The Venue, on the DMU Campus. This event has enabled all students to have the opportunity to show their garments on live models.

Emily Greenway Ellie Jones Brandi Brown

The Forum continues to attract interest across the intimate apparel and activewear industries, engaging with the wider medical community and patients. We aim to work collaboratively to establish a centre of excellence in the field of medical innovation and support. Work with post-surgical breast cancer patients and developing new applications for mastectomy and lumpectomy patients continues alongside Mr Jaroslaw Krupa, Head of Breast Surgery and Oconoplasty at Glenfield Hospital and Dr Nick Ibery, Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. Emily Greenway

Ellie Jones

Staff, students and patient contributions are invaluable to the development of the project and additional research activities are generated. We look forward to further collaborative elements as the areas of research begin to widen to include disability sportswear.

The event has been the product of intensive ‘in house’ collaborative planning and we would wish to thank all those staff involved, especially Alan Beattie for his vision, and James Thompson, the Performance and Events Manager and his team, who have worked so hard to ensure this event could be realised. A huge thankyou: Make-up: Hair: Models:

And all the Contour staff and technicians who assisted in supporting the event this year.

LONDON FASHION WEEK’S ‘FASHION’S FINEST’ 2021

FINAL COMMENT FROM UNDERLINES

Elisha Quarman has been selected to participate in this prestigious showcase.

Each year, our staunch supporter Pamela Scott, Managing Editor of the global magazine Underlines, provides showcasing for our final year students, this year featuring the External Client project for Lounge Underwear and Gymshark.

‘‘Every year we showcase the work of upcoming designers during London’s Fashion Week and it’s the perfect opportunity for individuals to get their name out there with press coverage as well as engage with potential clients.’’

“What challenges this academic year has brought. As usual De Montfort University has led from the front, producing first class work and designs of the highest calibre in the most extenuating circumstances. My congratulations go to each and every student this year!”

Nursen, Fashion Finest Events team Fashion

Contour Fashion Students FINAL YEAR STUDENTS OF DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY’S CONTOUR FASHION COURSE MANAGED TO PULL OFF AMAZING DESIGNS FOR TWO EXTERNAL PROJECTS IN ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING ACADEMIC YEARS IN MEMORY.

2021 Isabelle Graham (2nd)

“I really wanted my designs to embody Gymshark’s handwriting, while adding my own personal flair. I did a lot of research into common weightlifting injuries for women, and found that a lot of female athletes suffer from Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) damage, therefore I wanted to create a garment around attempting to prevent this from occurring.” In order to ensure her designs were as sustainable as possible, Zoe used mainly deadstock fabrics throughout the collection. “This project opened my eyes to why utilising sustainable practises is so important for the future of the design industry, and ways that I can become more sustainable, as a designer,” she added. Isla Gilbertson, Women’s Designer for Gymshark, said: “Having now worked with DMU for a third year, we’ve found the talent existing within the final year cohort to excite and allow us as a brand to understand what the future of the contour upcoming designers look like. “Every year there’s strong and talented work with a good level of consistency and we feel the teaching and specialising within sports apparel and bras truly helps to give those students better insights into industry. “We hope this experience allowed the students to understand the challenges and expectations of how a project of this nature needs to be approached and brought to life. Whilst scoping this project, it’s always required to follow brand guidelines, which give the students a more disciplined approach to delivery things to stay on brand.” Ze Lockett (Winner of Gymshark project) 2nd Place winner was Isabelle Graham 3rd Place winner was Ellie Jones In addition, two students received highly commended for their work on the project Hannah Scott Dahlia Branch

Zoe Lockett (Winner)

GYMSHARK Fitness apparel giant Gymshark founded in 2012 by Ben Francis and a group of school friends has now grown the business into a multi-million-pound company with customers in over 130 countries. The brief from Gymshark was to prepare a collection of 6 outfits, keeping in mind sustainable design and allowing for multi-use. Each student had to also prepare a ‘hero’ outfit showing technical difficulty and expertise and to make provision for new consumer trends brought about by COVID-19. There were 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners with two highly commended. Zoe Lockett scooped first prize for her collection which include a reversible sports bra, jacket and running shorts with reflective elements for added safety (she has been awarded a placement at Gymshark). Zoe commented: “It was such a privilege to be able to present to Gymshark, as I’m a huge fan of the brand and really admire the waves that they’re making in the industry.”
