DESIGN crafts BA (Hons)

This catalogue accompanies the degree show exhibition which represents the culmination of three years study for graduates from the Design Crafts BA (Hons) course at De Montfort University, Leicester. The exhibition celebrates student success and we acknowledge the creativity, skill and determination that have resulted in this work. The process of making artefacts demands a considerable amount of endeavour, knowledge, courage and financial commitment and is driven by a genuine determination to succeed. I commend the graduates on their organisation and planning in producing the diverse range of exciting craft and design work on show and for the fund raising efforts that have enabled the production of this catalogue. Our graduating students and staff team recognise the support and considerable encouragement received from family and friends during the course. We are all proud to share the results of their hard work and celebrate their combined success. I wish them all good luck in their future careers, wherever they are and whatever they do! Vintage is the theme for my designs, for surface decoration and the one–off ceramic artefacts. I use old jewellery and china ‘nick-knacks’ from charity shops which have floral themes. Illustrations and flower designs come from drawings manipulated in Adobe Photoshop. The objects are transformed into new pieces by taking casts from the floral elements and producing press moulds.

My creative inspiration involves the observation of cellular forms from within the human body; I chose this as a concept because it’s possible to find interesting shapes based on cellular structures. I have used slip-casting and mixed earthenware and porcelain slips together to create series of vessels.

To create this glass collection I have placed trails, joins or patterns during the making process, I used the ‘Incalmo’ technique which allowed me to combine contrasting patterned and coloured sections to define the subtlety and movement of the form.

The ceramic pieces have been inspired by bird’s nests. They are handmade using slip and various textile fibres, which are burned away during the firing process leaving a fragile and unique skeleton-like structure.

I am a designer - maker specialising in surface pattern, textiles and ceramics, creating decorative pieces for the home. Inspiration comes from absolutely anything, the latest catwalk fashion, jewellery, interiors. I use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to manipulate photographs and imagery to create collage and pattern which are then applied to ‘found’ ceramic tableware.

The inspiration for this body of work is the seashore. Specialising in hand building, I work with crank clay adding textures from shells, barnacles and limpets to create interesting surfaces. I have created trinket boxes that are inspired by rocks and pebbles, as no pebble is the same I have created a diverse collection of organic shapes and forms.

I make ink drawings of telephone wires, pylons, scaffolding and roofs which I digitally deconstruct, tessellate, and reconstruct, developing the drawing from a flat surface into three dimensional forms which can be used as lighting. A range of processes are used to develop the simple initial theme into complex three dimensional structures.

The main focus for my current body of work has been around plant cells or more specifically plant cell micrographs. Millefiori canes have been used to represent individual cells and to form structures within the collection of glass forms and wearables.

h a d l e y - s t o k e s I have been inspired by the techniques of origami and have combined this with screen printing. Imagery was initially inspired by traditional Japanese patterns and includes hummingbirds and chrysanthemum flowers these have been combined with painterly style faces. Designs are then showcased on a three dimensional origami surfaces.

My collection focuses on the distortion of line across a three dimensional form. Traditional Italian cane working techniques have been distorted by cutting and stabbing through the glass to create non-functional vessels.

I strive for a pure and clean aesthetic within my collection of simple functional tableware. My practice involves slip casting with earthenware and decorating with white and coloured glazes. The accents of colour playfully enhance the geometric shapes that hide within the interlocking forms that are revealed when used.

My work is influenced by a time in my life when I had to live on the street. De Montfort University, the Fletcher Tower and especially my degree in Design Crafts have been a huge stepping stone in my life. The Fletcher building at DMU is represented in my work which uses reclaimed clay and oxides.

My final collection is inspired by vintage luggage and vanity cases. Processes used are a combination of hand stitch and machine stitch, vacuum forming, embossing, screen printing, etching and wax metal casting. My hand cut paper installation was inspired by the drought, subsequent heavy rainfall and floods that occurred during 2012 and how the waterways and rivers in south-east England were affected. The Buckby Watercan is a symbol of Canal Craft and has been used in the installation to represent people affected by the extreme weather conditions. The paper sculpture is a focus for cut paper techniques and lighting effects and was made using a combination of hand cut and folded paper techniques.

For this installation I have used wood, textiles, metal, glass and plastics to convey different textures and to translate elements of my design onto multiple surfaces. Architecture and the decorative aspects of the Georgian period have influenced my designs; my use of the ceiling rose and of building exteriors is a direct reflection of the styles of that era.

This body of work is inspired by bird skulls, especially the smooth, delicate qualities of bone. The work explores the relationship between jewellery and the human form. Crisp, clear lines and soft, gentle sculptural curves have been combined in this collection of rings which have been designed to fit around different parts of the hand in a seamless and organic manner.

Laser cutting and electroforming have been used for this collection which was inspired by butterflies. The butterfly forms have been silver and gold plated and then hand riveted and stitched together to create traditional pendants and rings well as a ‘wearable swarm’ or cluster of butterflies for the catwalk.

My work focuses on my struggle with having dyslexia. Using nickel, I have created sculptural pieces that the viewer is obliged to look at closely to see the hidden detail inside. This reflects the hidden struggle to cope with dyslexia and the issues this creates.

Taking inspiration from damaged or wrecked World War 1 and 2 aircraft, I have developed a body of work that combines traditional and unconventional ways of working with precious and non precious metal. My work looks at the impact of a single gunshot and how it can create unexpected impressions in metal. This body of work aims to stimulate thought, conversation and curiosity and reflect on the beauty that can be found in damaged surfaces.

My current work is based on drawings that combine the man-made, road markings, brickwork and natural textures such as tree bark and leaves. My jewellery pieces are inspired by traditional jewellery and it’s portrayal of wealth and status. I wanted to contradict and exaggerate this concept by exploring non-traditional materials, using them in place of gemstones. I have used CAD software and machinery to create facets and shapes that accurately replicate cut gemstones. My necklaces aim to celebrate fakery in jewellery.

My childhood dressing up box was full of old dance costumes and strings of faux pearls. Now 30, I still love dressing up, and spend my weekends at 1940s World War II events. So when it was time to start my final collection I wanted to focus my attention on the effect the Second World War had on the British pottery industry.

shackletontrevor Initially I was inspired by models of sea creatures such as zooplankton, particularly Radiolaria, made using lampwork by Rudolf and Leopold Blaschka in the 19th century. I have used this research into historic lamp work models to create a contemporary version of my own that is full of pattern and character.

On February 6th 2012, I suffered a 3rd degree burn to my left hand. Since then, I have had 2 operations, spent 115 hours rubbing in moisturiser and taken 560 pills. Only since then have I truly appreciated my body and how awesome it is. With this collection I want to try and give the viewer a different insight into the world of recovery and medicine.

This work is focussed on the sometimes sinister aspects of Grimm’s Fairytales. Many of the quotes illustrated have an underlying feminist view-point and show how the pressures on women to look beautiful have been present throughout the decades. The manipulation of paper with stitch creates a particular aesthetic which alludes to today’s obsession with plastic surgery - aesthetically pleasing yet unnatural.

My glass forms are inspired by the formation of natural rock clusters and mineral specimens. I am particularly interested in the contrast between the rough and rocky exterior and the shiny, vibrant interior. My work exploits the naturally reflective and transparent properties of glass. I contrast soft and gentle curves with sudden sharp and polished slices.

For this body of work I explored various forms of dance and movement, eventually focusing on the ballet Swan Lake and the more contemporary production Black Swan. The music and movement is elegant yet extremely dynamic, I wanted to capture and exaggerate this using the fluidity of glass.

My work is all about making textures and patterns with paint, my designs are hand painted on to paper. I use many print techniques in my work, including lino printing, hand cut stencils, painting through different fabrics and the use of various tools to achieve different textures. I have also used digital printing to translate these hand-rendered effects onto fabric.

My one-off wall pieces are never drawn out onto paper but are sewn directly onto fabric either commercially produced or hand-woven. I am inspired by Scandinavian geometric design and colours that derive from Northern Europe. The use of meticulous hand embroidery with fabric manipulation adds a contemporary touch to traditional techniques.

My work uses kiln formed and cast glass processes. Working from models which have been developed through a combination of digital and hand techniques. Card models are used to make ‘burn out’ moulds, generating different sizes and styles of clear glass forms. The ideas and shapes for this body of work have come from the architecture of both ancient Rome and modern day London.

I became fascinated by my neighbour’s house after my family were given the keys when he sadly passed away last year. I had lived next to this man my entire life, yet knew very little about him. The house looked as though it hadn’t been redecorated since he first moved-in in 1957, and my ceramic pieces aim to capture this sense of nostalgia, familiarity and sentiment. I wanted to convey the sadness I felt at the thought of this house being renovated leaving no impression of the life that had been.

I am currently working with metal, using a combination of hand raising and forming to create an installation inspired by natural forms. The complexity of metal as a material interests me. The initial physical effort required to cut and manipulate metal, contradicted by the ease with which it can be handled and reformed once heated.

My collection is a combination of glass and metal elements which have been inspired by mechanical structures. Pieces are created using a range of manipulating techniques, pulling and stretching glass spikes resulting in functional and decorative forms. The wall pieces are kiln fused glass and enamelled copper. The rich, contrasting fiery reds, metallic blues and earthy greens evoke the natural erosion of rust.
