FASHION TEXTILE DESIGN Fashion Textile Design BA(Hons) is a specialist course, providing opportunities for students to develop in-depth textile design expertise for the fashion industry. The course provides an opportunity for students to investigate new creative directions for fashion-forward, luxury and innovative design approaches for fashion material culture. In March 2020, the global pandemic reached our shores, redefining our ability to interact with each other, study, work and travel. What we previously understood as possible seemed to be, now, impossible. Like all students, our 2021 year group suddenly had restrictions not only on their movement but their creative practice, their ability to refine their skills and pursue their dreams. However, from adversity, there comes reaction, resilience, resourcefulness and creativity. The restrictions brought new opportunities and time to reflect on what is possible and what could be done rather than what was stopping us. Having had one academic term curtailed through the first lockdown in March, we worked on developing a plan centred around socially distanced studio spaces, focused workshop access and insightful research, which we hoped would allow our students to return in Oct 2020. Throughout this academic year, we have successfully maintained practical access where possible, supporting working at home and then the transition back to onsite learning; always working within the government guidelines. The result was the successful development of resolved design collections and personal portfolios, as evidenced by this showcase. Throughout the year we have been grateful for the ongoing support from the Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters, the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers and the Worshipful Company of Dyers. This support in the form of bursaries, awards and external commentary makes a huge difference to our students. Students have once again been able to access a range of regional and national events to showcase their work digitally or physically at Graduate Fashion Week, New Designers and Fashanne. In June we also produced a catwalk presentation, filmed behind closed doors. Providing an opportunity for the students to present their work on the body and professionally showcase a selection of their work. This document is a tribute to our students’ ability to adjust, redefine and focus on the most important part of their creative journey; the process of creating. It is a testament to the talent and ingenuity of our final year students and all the efforts they have made in reacting to a global crisis. Whilst demonstrating their ability to remain creative, passionate and upbeat in the face of a challenge.
