Together with the development of Hochiminh City, population keeps on growing and therefore population density is growing as well. To cope up with this situation, closing - box - houses are made to privide for the citizen. These houses are trying to fit in as many rooms as posxsible, closing themselves down to their neighborhood, forgetting the true value of “home”. With the location in the upcoming neighborhood area of district 2 together with decent space and good environment, the project, treasuring traditional architectural values, aims to bring back the definition of “home”. “Home” isn’t just a machine to stay in, “home” is where we live.

The house is aim to provide for a family of four and their maid, facing north. To avoid cold north wind during the year, the front block is higher than the rest of the house. Kitchen located on the south block to catch the warm wind. Ground floor is for public purposes, and therefore is “empty with the reduction of walls and the addition of doors toward the garden. Bedrooms on higher levels, despite their private character, still have big window open to the garden and the street outside, help bring light and air inside of the house.

inbetw IN MODERN DAYS AND IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES SUCH AS VIETNAM, BESIDE HIGHRISES AND MODERN BUILDING, THERE ARE STILL EXISTING SOME CONSTRUCTION OF THE PAST. OUR MISSION AS AN ARCHITECT IS TO FIND A WAY TO CONNECT THESE TWO ELEMENTS, THESE TWO STYLES, TO CREATE SOMETHING THAT NOT ONLY PROVIDE FOR MODERN LIFE BUT ALSO STICK WITH THE PLACE, THE LOCATION, THE COMMUNITY.

Beside mordern crowded life and sleepless streets, Hochiminh city - or Sai Gon - is also consist of many historical buildings, especially the Indochine-style apartments constructed during the colonial of France. These apartments sit quietly inside the heart of the city, watching Sai Gon grow up to be the lead of Vietnam. However, despite historical and architectural values of this beatiful part of the city, the government and the people who live inside these buildings haven’t given them enough care and appropriate preservation method, resulted in abandoned apartment and a dangerous environment for the citizen. To fix this problem, the project - Sai Gon homestay - proposes an alternative solution to take full advantage of an old apartment building which is planned to be destroyed located near Ben Thanh market - city’s most famous destination.

FLEXIBLE SPACES

Old structural frame stay the same while walls and floors are re-constructed to create diverse spaces, suitable for hospitality purposes.

TRANSPARENT ROOF

Since the apartment located very close to adjacent buildings, trasparent tiles help bringing light to Saigon homestay , create an open-space.

OLD FACADE OLD TILED ROOF

Old tiled-roof brings an old-fashioned look to the building,is consitent with the rest of the apartment and suitable for Saigon’s weather.

The existing facade remain the same in order to preserve Indochine-architectural values of the city.

Continuing 1st floor space, all of the rooms in 2nd floor are put around the floor vent. There is also a space near the windows for residence to interact with each other and observe the view.

Rooms are put around the floor vent in the middle of the house, always full of light.t

Store in the front of the apartment building remained the same, create a suprising effect for guests when arriving at the homestay. Beside commercial and homestay area, residental area for hosts and cleaners is put in a convenience location.

AN CUU IS A SMALL RIVER - A PART OF HUONG RIVER -, LOCATED IN THE SOUTH OF HUE IMPERIAL CITY. THE RIVER IS 30 km LONG, BEGINS FROM THE HUONG RIVER, GOES BY HUE CITY AND FINALLY FLOWS OUT TO HA TRUNG LAGOON. SINCE THE NGUYEN DYNASTY PICKED KIM LONG TO BE ITS CAPITAL, ALOT OF PEOPLE FROM THE ROYAL FAMILY HAD BUILT HOUSES ALONG AN CUU RIVER. UP UNTIL NOW, A LOT OF BUILDINGS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AND ARE OPENED FOR VISIT. WITH IT PEACEFUL ATMOSPHERE AND BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPE, AN CUU RIVER HAS BECAME A FAMILIAR DESTINATION FOR TOURISTS.

AN CUU MARKET

LOCATED BY HUNG VUONG ST., ONE OF HUE CITY MAIN ROAD, THE MARKET IS EASY TO ACESS AND THEREFOR ALWAYS CROWDED. IT LEADS TO THE BORN OF THIS PROVISIONAL - MARKET ALONG AN CUU RIVER. THE SMALL MARKET IS MORE CONVENIENT AND EASIER TO ACCESS. HOWEVER ITS CAUSED TRAFFIC JAMS AND ALSO HAS BAD AFFECTS TO THE SITE ENVIRONMENT.

COMMERCIAL MODULE These modules are used to create siting spaces for selling people. Thank to these modules, the riverside would have less chaos and started to have an order. The net tray underneath the siting tray will make it easier to collect the trash while letting the water run through.

CULTURAL CONNECTION

One of the site biggest commission is to continue the cultural line along An Cuu river . It has to embrace Hue’s beauty and the site complec charecter. The project proposes a light wood structure run above the comtemporary market. This structure inherent Hue’s traditional architecture and beauty such as pattern - window, traditional structure, etc. This structure is a place for the tourists and the locals to sit down and watch the view toward the river while enjoying a cup of tea or local cuisine.

NOW WITH THE PROBLEM OF POPULATION AND URBANIZATION, REQUIREMENT FOR HOUSES AND SERVICE BUILDINGS ARE RISING AS WELL. BOX-HOUSES, HIGHRISES, PRE-CONSTRUTED BUILDINGS, ETC HAVE BEEN BROUGHTEN FROM DEVELOPED COUTRIES WITHOUT CONSIDERATING THE LOCAL ENVRONMENT AND LIFESTYLE. THIS IS THE PROBLEM VIETNAMESE AND DEVELOPING COUTRIES’S ARCHITECTS ARE FACING: HOW TO PROVIDE FOR SOCIAL NEED BUT ALSO PRESERVE TRADITIONAL VALUES AS WELL.

THE STORY OF PAPER PAPER IS A COMMON MEAN OF COMMUNICATION, OF TRANSFERING INFORMATION . TOGETHER WITH LETTERS AND PICTURES, PAPER DELIVER MESSAGES THROUGH BOOKS, MAGAZINES, NEWSPAPERS , ETC. NOT ONLY THAT, THE PAPER ITSELF IS AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION MEAN THROUGH FOLDING LINES AND SHAPE. BY LEARNING THE ART OF FOLDING PAPER, THE PROJECT ITSELF HAS TAKEN SHAPE.

Propose method of shaping the building after going through various origami design

The box-shape is then cut in half to fit with the requirement of space and height

From the basic shape, structural frame of the building has been formed

The outside layer of the library is the light bamboo curtain system follows the origami grid of the cover steel frame. This frame is then connected with the concrete structural frame to create steady structure. The bamboo curtain help reducing solar radiator during daytime but also let air run through, create good air ventilation and bring on natural light. The library is not line up with the existing campus, partly “merge with the main building create an abstract but also a connection between two buildings through the similarities in architectural language. By not lining up with UAH campus, the library could catch better sunlight and warm air through the years.
