UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE IN HOCHIMINH CITY
LE THI HAI DUONG Having graduated from the University of Architecture in Ho Chi Minh City with an excellent degree and gained valuable industry experience through work placements with various organizations from small architectural studios to international companies, I have realized the crucial role which Architecture holds in the development of our society. I’ve also recognized how little I am in the Architectural world, and am willing to explore diverse perspectives of the field to deeply understand the connection between Architecture and the world.

OLD
Going through thousand years of fighting for survival, our ancestors have completed the art of constructing a comfortable living space which can withstand extreme weather conditions. These spaces not only fulfill their function but also achieve a high aesthetic level. In the present time, despite various changes in our social and cultural values, traditional architecture is and will always be a strong resource and background for us to lean on and continue developing.
HÙNG’S TEMPLE Personal project // 2017
Located in the heart of Hochiminh city, with the desire to preserve and embrace traditional values, Hung’s temple is using common wooden structure in vernacular houses and combining it with modern material and creative uses of space. The structure is put in the center of a circle lake in order to create a silent and religious feeling for visitors. Long and narrow entrance help calm the soul and empty the mind of the visitors when they enter Hung’s temple. Walls on both sides of this walk path are filled with drawings and sculptures about mythological stories and the glorious past of our ancestors - the Hung’s dynasty. Spiral staircase in the middle of the temple helps connect the past - the present - the future, bringing visitors from static space to dynamic area, from darkness to light.
HOUSE-HOME Personal project // 2018
Together with the development of Ho Chi Minh City is the continuous growth of its population, resulting in high density and poor living conditions. To cope up with this situation, closing - box - houses are made to provide the citizens with proper housing. These houses are trying to fit in as many rooms as possible, closing themselves down to their neighborhood, forgetting the true value of “home”. With the location in the upcoming neighborhood area of district 2 together with decent space and good environment, the project, which also treasuring traditional architectural values, aims to bring back the definition of “home”. “Home” isn’t just a machine to stay in, “home” is where we live.

INBETWEEN
In developing countries like Vietnam, besides highrises and modern buildings, various constructions of the past still exist. Our mission as an architect, therefore, is to find a way to connect these two ends of the contemporary world in order to create something that will not only be crucial for the current life but also treasure ancient values.
MARKET - HOME Group project // 2019
Architecture is not supposed to overwhelm the surroundings but to blend in effectively with nature. Designing is not to create a new thing but to find a solution for the problems remaining in the environment, the design has to stick with the place, the location which we cannot apply it anywhere we want. The project is not about creating something new in the middle of the river, but this is about what we are going to do to support the existing landscape regarding An Cuu River, An Cuu Market and the neighborhood. It is mainly about making the current situation more outstanding and special by using the natural materials we already have.

HUE CITY - AN CUU RIVER An Cuu is a small river located at the south of Hue imperial city. The river is 30km long which begins at a part of Huong river in the mountain region, then runs through Hue city and finally flows out to Ha Trung lagoon. Since the Nguyen dynasty picked Kim Long (Hue at the present) to be its capital, many people from the royal family had built houses along side An Cuu river. At the moment, the majority of these buildings are still in good condition and open briefly for visitors. With its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful landscape, An Cuu river has became a must-go destination for tourists. At the end of An Cuu river in Hue city there is a market with the same name. The existence of the market has disrupted the tourism stream along An Cuu river since its always caught in traffic and unhygienic atmosphere.

RESEARCH - PLANNING Huế - the old capital of Vietnam - is considered the cultural and historical centre of the country. Beside poetic and picturesque images of the land, there is a small and vulnerable community whose life depends on the river. The people of the floating boat community (FBC) are bound together as a result of poverty, immigration and economic crisis. Throughout the course of history, this community has received support from international and national organizations and till this day only 1 group of this community living in Thuy Phu hasn’t been resettled yet. This project aims to design a “good” resettlement area for Thuy Phu’s people and also propose a sustainable planning to fit the resettlement area in the existing context. ----------------------Looking back at previous resettlement projects, the government only provided accomodation on land for the FBC people but forgot their cultural values. The project, therefore, aims to propose a sustainable resettlement model, not only provide Thuy Phu’s people with adequate housing, but also create an environment which praises their background, allows them to develop alongside local people. “The city is what it is because the citizens are who they are.”

RESETTLEMENT HOUSING By analyzing previous resettlement areas, the project chooses modular housing instead of low rise apartments. Modular housing is both cost-effective and size-flexible, which is suitable for the rise in population of the FBC. The main house is designed with steel structure to build additional floors, while the service house is constructed with brick and equipped with a rainwater harvesting system to face drought seasons. The house also has a floatable part to cope with climate change and resemble life on the boat. Open floor plans create a link between separate housing similar to the connection among the FBC community.

COMMUNITY CENTER The centre is designed to respond to the city’s vision of Tan An being Huế’s center of public services. The centre is divided into 3 different blocks: cultural learning - to improve living quality, local market - to promote regional products, aquaculture research - to cope with climate change effects on local aquaculture production. These blocks are connected by a mutual event, exhibition hall, which allows visitors to observe different aspects of Tan An people’s life. The functional blocks are designed to resemble the image of boats - people - floating along deep rivers, while the circle halls remind of the water. The whole building is located above the wetland region, allowing the water to flow through the natural filtration system and storing them for drought seasons.

PUBLIC SPACE - MIDDLE GROUND This project aims to solve the problem of the existing resettlement areas for the FBC in Huong So, Phu Hau and Phu Mau (Hue city). When planning and implementing these areas, the government only seeked to provide people with adequate living space but forgot to adjust the design to fit with the FBC cultural values. These areas also lack the connection between the resettlement community and the existing community, making the adaptation process of the FBC to their new found life on the ground even harder. The project helps address this problem by proposing a “middle ground” for the FBC to blend in with the locals. These “middle grounds” are equipped with furniture related to culinary culture - the fastest way to connect people - and also resemble the activity which had happened on the boat.
NOW
Together with the development of the economy is the increase of population and the rapid growth of urbanization. Requirements for convenient, low price and easy to construct buildings are rising as well. Modern structure and designs, therefore, have been bought from one country to another instantly without consideration of the building’s environmental and cultural context. This is a problem with which Vietnam and other countries in the world have to face everyday, and is a problem that us architects have to find a solution immediately.
UAH LIBRARY Personal project // 2019
THE STORY OF PAPER Paper is the most common means of communication. Together with letters and images, paper helps deliver messages even through books, magazines and newspapers as well. Not only that, the shape of paper, the mark left behind after folding could also be emberred with information. In order to acknowledge the role of paper in our daily life and to celebrate its function in the house of book - a library, the project try to explore the possibility of form through the shape of paper

RACH CHIEC SPORT CENTER Personal project // 2020
Located next to Rach Chiec river, the design of the sport center seeks to find a connection between the building and the site. The large span structure helps provide enough space for activities underneath while also providing natural light for its interior during the day thanks to the difference in the deAÙN KIEÁN TRUÙC 12 - COÂNG COÄNG 7 sign of each frame.
