LEDs have been touted for their long lifespans, but lighting performance means more than simply producing illumination. In demanding visual environments, such as museum settings and patient examination rooms, the color of lighting can be almost as important as its intensity. A recent GATEWAY demonstration project conducted

by the U.S. Energy Dept.’s Solid-State Lighting Program has shown that a number of lamps may suffer from color shifting beyond acceptable tolerances in as little as a few thousand hours.
ABOVE: The graphics reveal color shift of lamps tested by DOE in its GATEWAY demonstration projects as shown in the 1976 (u' v') chromaticity diagram. Each point is labeled with its hours of use. The data is not longitudinal.
The research focused on lamps installed as part of a GATEWAY demonstration in several galleries of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. These lamps were reevaluated after several thousand hours of use when color shifting became apparent. In fact,
Color Shift on Lamps Used in Museums
several of the lamps had shifted so much that they required replacement well before they had reached the end of their rated lifespans. These failures also highlighted a range of responses

Doctor-Approved LED The physician administrators at the Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic in Raleigh, N.C., have gone for LED-based illumination in a big way. The building’s new state-of-the-art headquarters and surgery center now is lit by more than 1,000 CR Series architectural troffers from Cree. Initially impressed by the potential for significant energy savings, the medical staff has since noted the fixtures’ dimming performance, which is used whenever X-rays are viewed in the facility’s diagnostic exam rooms.•

T RESOURCES: LED EDUCATION
Breaking Down the Veil of SSL Nisa Kahn has just written a great new book: Understanding LED Illumination. Architectural SSL will present a series highlighting key aspects of the book. "The series will show that we need to begin with understanding what constitutes light quality; then assess why LEDs lack some aspects of it while other incumbent lamps do not. Fortunately, the book offers methods and solutions to overcome LEDs’ quality impediments," says Kahn. •
"QUALITY LIGHTING IS ESSENTIALLY CREATING ILLUMINATION WITH THE RIGHT INTENSITY AND COLOR IN THREE DIMENSIONAL SPACE."

LED Hammered By DOE The U.S. Dept. of Energy has published the findings of a new study utilizing a highly accelerated life-test method— the “hammer test”—intended to produce failures in SSL luminaires in a reasonable test period, with the goal of providing insight into potential failure modes. In the report, by RTI International, indoor SSL luminaires were subjected to extreme environmental stressors, including temperature cycling, temperature and humidity soak, and high-temperature bake, with power cycled to provide electrical stress as well. Among the findings: Z All luminaires survived more than 100 cycles of temperature shock (-50ºC-125º C). Z Nearly half survived more than 300 cycles. Z The failures observed typically occurred in the driver circuit, with board-level failures being most common. Z The 611 LEDs in these luminaires endured nearly 1 million hours of cumulative exposure to the hammer test, with only four failures—two of which were attributed to solder-joint fatigue, and the other two to board-level corrosion. The findings reinforce the belief that LEDs in lighting systems are highly reliable, even under extreme conditions, and indicate that other luminaire components are more likely to fail first. While the results suggest that SSL luminaires will have a low probability of random failure in the field during normal use, additional work is needed to determine actual wear-out mechanisms, quantify failure modes, and determine acceleration factors, in order to provide estimates of lifetime and reliability.

CERAMIC IN THE FUTURE?
New developments in LED array technologies, including Chip on Board arrays, and use of ceramics for materials for mid-power LED packages, should help improve performance in many finished SSL luminaires. Ceramic arrays, for example, show great promise in improving semi-directional sources. have been largely designed around significantly enhanced thermal characteristics, replacing packages of AlOx with AlN or direct Cu onto the board. Providing board-level solutions, he says, addresses thermal constraints at the level of the LED solution through things like materials selection. In a similar vein, Bailey anticipates that more manufacturers will move away from low-cost FR-4 PCBs toward metal-core or more exotic ceramic PCB materials to better address thermal management. But one issue of concern to some is difficulty in testing the product’s temperature given its small size. That being said, the same LM-80-08 testing procedures and TM-21-11 projection methods still apply and Brodrick assures that conventional test equipment is readily compatible with these smaller form factor packages.
GOOD APPLICATION FOR COB
DOE’s Jim Brodrick notes innovations with Chip-on-Board technology will really play to the strengths of products wishing to create lots of light, albeit controlled light, over large areas such as streets. Shown here are Litek’s custom post-top luminaires in the Piazza San Marco in Venice, which were retrofitted with Philips Lumileds emitters for energy savings of more than 80%. Photo courtesy: Philips Lumileds
Still, Bailey points out that COBs may have the greatest level of uncertainty due to the vast number of individual die used and the potential for varying levels of current density and die temperature across the array. Willmorth, however, contends many arrays of small high-power LEDs on custom board layouts produce the same performance and issues of multiple die in series/parallel arrangement as COB arrays, and at a higher cost.

LINE LED Edge Lit Task Luminaire
Breaking free from the idea of consolidated light sources, the Light Sheet offers fixture makers a new way of providing distributed light across a wide plane. The product, which incorporates a dense pattern of LEDs on a thin plastic substrate, is available in multiple widths and in virtually any length, so designers can create organic, free form luminaires with efficacies up to 140 lm/W. The fixture adapts the latest illumination technology from the display industry to create an asymmetrical light distribution from a 0.5-in. deep luminaire. It delivers highly uniform, glare-free light that is free from shadows or hot spots. With an efficacy of up to 52 lm/W, the LINE is designed for optimal use in series; the power factor improves substantially when more than one unit is connected to the power supply. LINE is available in five different lengths and can be dimmed to 10% while maintaining light quality.

ColorGraze MX4 Powercore RGBW or RGBA fixtures offer an expanded palette of intensely saturated full-color light output in a variety of beam angles. Low-profile housing, connectorized cabling, a universal power input range, and direct line-voltage operation make fixtures easy to install and operate. Custom lengths, LED channels, beam angles, housing colors, and power consumption levels produce hundreds of possible configurations and light distribution patterns to support facade or surface illumination applications.
The fraqtir S171 LED outdoor luminaire uses patented refractive optics to create an asymmetric distribution ideal for illuminating surfaces evenly from one edge free of scallops or striations. Several mounting and orientations allow ceiling mounted to wash down a wall, cantilever mounted to light up or down the wall or wall mounted to uplight across a canopy or awning. The tempered micro-prismatic glass lens is impact resistant and post-cured silicone gaskets seal the LED and driver compartment from the elements.
A low profile LED luminaire designed for cove applications, Covert by Focal Point features four different profiles to fit any cove and an adjustable light bar with optional adjustable light scoop to allow designers to dial in the ideal light distribution. Directional LEDs push light out of the cove and into the space, maximizing impact with limited energy use.

LMH2 LED Module with Sunset Dimming
The XM-2LED delivers up to 186 lm/W and is designed for such high-lumen applications as high-bay and outdoor lighting. With this kind of output, fixture makers need fewer LEDs and optics, which simplifies design and could lower cost without sacrificing performance. According to Jeff Rogers, marketing VP for Musco Sports Lighting, this successor to previous XM-L products “allows us to boost the performance of our existing XM-L designs without changing optics or drivers.”
www.architecturalssl.com
This LED’s high luminous flux, high forward voltage and high color consistency from only one small LED package allows for completely new opportunities for indoor lighting applications. The new DURIS S 8 emits a great deal of light from a small surface area; it measures only 5.8 × 5.2 mm and is available in six- or eight-chip versions, allowing for different lumen packages from one LED type, which saves cost within the luminaire, reducing assembly efforts and simplifying logistics. The close grouping of the LED die allows for excellent color consistency in combination with high lumens.
This LED module offers dimming comparable to that of a lovely sunset, with a color temperature that smoothly shifts from 2700K down to 1800K— while maintaining a color rendering index of >90 throughout the entire range. Because the LMH2 is compatible with TRIAC dimmers, the module can be retrofitted into rooms with traditional technologies, as well as those using DALI systems. Edison Price is one of the lighting manufacturers working with the new modules, and the company’s Mike Wang, VP of lighting engineering says the module “delivers rich, warm light while maintaining a high CRI to provide the look and feel of a traditional incandescent lamp.”

MARKET LEADERSHIP
Hubbell Lighting
LUXeXceL Group
TECHNOLOGY BRAND LEADER
TECHNOLOGY BRAND LEADER
One of the issues that has held back the adoption of solid-state lighting has been one of cost. Beyond doing its part to bring down cost in manufacturing improvements, Hubbell Lighting, with a longstanding legacy of innovation, complemented by a streamlined product-to-market process, has stepped up big by frankly putting its money where its mouth is with the institution of its financing program. This past year the company rolled out its innovative “createchange” and Cash Flow Positive programs to help businesses cut electricity costs, enhance their quality of light and reduce the financial risk of lighting upgrades. From traditional to LED, from solar powered to wireless control, from downlights to street lights, from high bays to low bays, from step lights to exit signs, the Hubbell collection of products offers nearly boundless lighting combinations. The company puts great importance on collaboration while recalling the beliefs of Harvey Hubbell in creating a culture of progress. These days, its state-of-the-art U.S. research and development lab spurs new ideas, and new lighting capabilities, while its 25,000-sq.-ft. Lighting Solutions Center is dedicated to teaching others about how to solve current and future lighting challenges, offering dozens of classes each year. Hubbell is also the only lighting manufacturer with a LEED Silver certified headquarters, demonstrating its commitment to environmental responsibility as well as its commitment to energy efficient lighting solutions.
Founded only a few years ago in 2009, LUXeXceL is the inventor of Printoptical Technology. The company develops, manufactures and markets optical solutions for the global LED lighting industry by a novel and patented digital printing, optical and lighting technology, a fundamental innovation in the Additive Manufacturing of LED optics. The optical devices are engineered to enhance light and light distribution; to improve and ease the performance, design and manufacturing of LED lighting optics; and to create new product, marketing, and media possibilities. Focus is on the design, short term prototyping and manufacturing of LED lighting optics. The process 3-D prints optical structures and elements using modified wide format industrial inkjet equipment. The results of the process are geometric or freeform shapes that may include transparent prisms or lenses, as well as full color 3-D graphics and textures. Optical quality surfaces are achieved with no post processing. Printoptical avoids complicated and costly conventional processes, gets rid of obsolete stock and shortens the time to market significantly. The company was honored by the Frost & Sullivan “2012 Enabling Technology Innovation Award for Advanced LED Lighting Optics.”
MARKET LEADERSHIP Beyond feting products, we also wanted to recognize manufacturers who are "good guys," in the context of doing good things for the community, other than simply producing quality products. The honors have taken the form of our Market Leadership Awards. We asked companies to provide examples of their leadership through various efforts, be it research, involvement in standards development, education, creation of useful tools and websites, and the like. Based on these overall, omnibus submissions, we asked our judges to award specific honors in the following areas: 1) TECHNOLOGY BRAND LEADER—for companies consistently delivering the most innovative products that advance lighting application and design. 2) INDUSTRY PARTICIPATION—for companies consistently involved in a combination of education, advancements in forwarding standards, appearing and speaking at conferences, and frankly, facilitating the free exchange of ideas to advance the development of solid-state lighting. 3) EDUCATION BRAND OF THE YEAR—for companies consistently creating and developing educational offerings. 4) OUTSTANDING CATALOG—for companies that consistently produce top-notch supplemental materials which help specifiers do their jobs. Following are this year’s winners with a brief explanation of their accomplishments.

LLFY is a network of certified OSRAM partners specializing in the key disciplines of optical, thermal and electrical design and LED integration. The LLFY network helps customers connect with industry experts and realize and optimize LED designs and systems. Additionally, the company’s website, www.ledlight. osram-os.com, is exclusively dedicated to LEDs for solid state lighting. The site hosts a wealth of SSL related information to include technical articles, training slidecasts and the ever popular LED Fundamental training video series, which has had more than 17,500 views since its introduction.
The company’s 2013/2014 SSL Luminaire Catalog for indoor, outdoor and specialty luminaires was designed to meet the needs of lighting specifiers, architects and facility managers, making it simpler for them to choose the right luminaire for their lighting projects based on luminaire design features, specifications and application performance. Benchmarking top luminaire manufacturers’ catalogs and utilizing the company’s specification engineers’ expertise with lighting projects, a very clean, easy to read format was created for this catalog. “Design Features” are called out, “Specifications” are clearly defined, “Dimensional Data” and snapshots of “Photometric Distributions” are provided. The “How to Specify” Section simplifies specification creation when used in conjunction with the newly formatted luminaire cut sheets available on www.sylvania. com. Unique to the catalog are “Reference design examples in the Application Information section” underneath How to Specify. On the education front, several people from within the company have been published in various industry publications. Several vertical sales managers have also presented at various conferences. A founding member of the EMerge Alliance, the company also has many industry experts on ASHRAE, NEMA and the IESNA Lighting committees.

Flexibility with a Twist Changing ambient lighting needs can be accommodated easily with new GE Lighting Lumination DI Series luminaires, which incorporate LED modules that can be upgraded in seconds thanks to a twist-fit design that leaves the fixture in place. Designers can specify lumen levels ranging from 1,000 lm up to 4,000 lm, as well varying color temperatures. The 4– and 6–in. fixtures are available in round and square shapes. ´ Visit www.gelightingsolutions.com or Circle 300.
Despite tremendous innovations surrounding LED downlights, the segment still represents less than 1% of the total fixture population.
4 Kid Gloves Not Required Halogen G9 lamps can require handling with gloves to avoid premature damage—not so with MaxLite’s LED G9 retrofit lamps, in two models, which fit easily into existing mini-pendants and the like, and only draw 2W or 3W. ´ Visit www.maxlite.com or Circle 304.
5 Bright Idea for a Dim Bulb Finiré fixtures from Lutron’s Ivalo line come with a hi-lume a-series 1% dimming driver as a standard feature compatible with lutron drivers and controls. Additionally, designers can specify xicato modules with an exceptionally high CRI of 95+ (an 83 CRI module is standard). ´ Visit www.lutron.com or Circle 305.
6 Beautifully Geometric Tech Lighting’s Biza linear suspension demonstrates how geometries can converge to make the complex simply beautiful. The bottom diffuser is composed of clear injection molded plastic inserts that add remarkable depth and illusion when viewed from below. ´ Visit www.techlighting.com or Circle 306.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
NEXT ISSUE:
A Giant Step Backwards There is no question that LEDs have given the lighting industry a shot of adrenaline. Opportunities abound for innovative product design, and luminaires are taking on a whole new look. Unfortunately, I feel the architectural outdoor industry has taken a giant step backward. Architecture is the backdrop for almost all outdoor lighting installations, and architects specify outdoor luminaires that complement the building exterior as an integral part of the design. The vast majority of so-called “architectural outdoor LED luminaires” that have been introduced have no relationship to today’s architectural design whatsoever. In fact, many of them are just downright ugly! Why is this so? Outdoor LED luminaires must be carefully engineered or they will fail. Consequently, engineers have taken on the role of designers, but manufacturers must realize that engineers and designers are as different as Venus and Mars. Collaboration between the two is imperative, but that assumes that the designer understands architecture. Herein lies the other problem, industrial designers do not understand architecture either. The indoor lighting companies seem to “get it.” Why can’t outdoor manufacturers do the same? —Wayne Compton
The LED Blues? Does the light produced by LED lighting contain harmful blue light that threatens the growing tempo of solid-state lighting? Kevin Willmorth tackles this controversial issue in our next Market Setting Feature. We debut a new series based on Nisa Kahn’s new book Understanding LED Illumination. In this adaptation, Nisa will explore what, exactly, is quality lighting and how do we quantify it? Elsewhere, we’ll take a look at the South Placer County Santucci Justice Center, part of the Superior Court of California, which upgraded its lighting system to LED. This, however, was not just a simple retrofit, as it was important to maintain the clean and modern aesthetic look and feel originally envisioned and delivered by the architects.
