LEDs have been touted for their long lifespans, but lighting performance means more than simply producing illumination. In demanding visual environments, such as museum settings and patient examination rooms, the color of lighting can be almost as important as its intensity. A recent GATEWAY demonstration project conducted

by the U.S. Energy Dept.’s Solid-State Lighting Program has shown that a number of lamps may suffer from color shifting beyond acceptable tolerances in as little as a few thousand hours.

LED Hammered By DOE The U.S. Dept. of Energy has published the findings of a new study utilizing a highly accelerated life-test method— the “hammer test”—intended to produce failures in SSL luminaires in a reasonable test period, with the goal of providing insight into potential failure modes. In the report, by RTI International, indoor SSL luminaires were subjected to extreme environmental stressors, including temperature cycling, temperature and humidity soak, and high-temperature bake, with power cycled to provide electrical stress as well. Among the findings: Z All luminaires survived more than 100 cycles of temperature shock (-50ºC-125º C). Z Nearly half survived more than 300 cycles. Z The failures observed typically occurred in the driver circuit, with board-level failures being most common. Z The 611 LEDs in these luminaires endured nearly 1 million hours of cumulative exposure to the hammer test, with only four failures—two of which were attributed to solder-joint fatigue, and the other two to board-level corrosion. The findings reinforce the belief that LEDs in lighting systems are highly reliable, even under extreme conditions, and indicate that other luminaire components are more likely to fail first. While the results suggest that SSL luminaires will have a low probability of random failure in the field during normal use, additional work is needed to determine actual wear-out mechanisms, quantify failure modes, and determine acceleration factors, in order to provide estimates of lifetime and reliability.

Paradigm has a halo shape and uses energy efficient LEDs. The design, a good fit for exterior entryways and a variety of interior applications, features an aluminum shade with a glass lens and two-toned shade and lens ring option that can be installed as a pendant or with miter arm. The Paradigm 14-in. diameter includes a 20W LED while the 18-in. diameter features a 44W LED. Both models can be installed with an 18-, 24- or 30-in. miter arm. RLM designs are available in more than 20 different finishes.

This portable, rechargeable LED lamp blurs the line of distinction between the bulb and the lamp. Designed by Frederic Gooris, the lamp integrates new LED technology with the form of the oil lamp from our past, and is powered by three lithium ion batteries. At full brightness the charged batteries will power the lamp for approximately 5 hours, and at the dimmest “night light” setting, the lamp will burn for up to 100 hours. Ricordo emits a warm white (2700K) color, consumes only 4 W of energy, and at full brightness gives off 250 lm.

The new DURIS S 8 emits a great deal of light from a small surface area; it measures only 5.8 × 5.2 mm and is available in six- or eight-chip versions, allowing for different lumen packages from one LED type, which saves cost within the luminaire, reducing assembly efforts and simplifying logistics. The close grouping of the LED die allows for excellent color consistency in combination with high lumens.

A Giant Step Backwards There is no question that LEDs have given the lighting industry a shot of adrenaline. Opportunities abound for innovative product design, and luminaires are taking on a whole new look. Unfortunately, I feel the architectural outdoor industry has taken a giant step backward. Architecture is the backdrop for almost all outdoor lighting installations, and architects specify outdoor luminaires that complement the building exterior as an integral part of the design. The vast majority of so-called “architectural outdoor LED luminaires” that have been introduced have no relationship to today’s architectural design whatsoever. In fact, many of them are just downright ugly! Why is this so? Outdoor LED luminaires must be carefully engineered or they will fail. Consequently, engineers have taken on the role of designers, but manufacturers must realize that engineers and designers are as different as Venus and Mars. Collaboration between the two is imperative, but that assumes that the designer understands architecture. Herein lies the other problem, industrial designers do not understand architecture either. The indoor lighting companies seem to “get it.” Why can’t outdoor manufacturers do the same? —Wayne Compton
