Ready to see the 2023 PIA Winners and more? It’s all inside.
This issue of Architectural Products does what Architectural Products does best. It puts exciting, innovative products on the pages and connects our professional architecture and design audience with architectural insights on why, how, and where this product could be or was a good solution. These stories bridge the gap between product launch and project lessons by sharing both, while celebrating the journey in-between.
In “Making Passive House History at Hotel Marcel,” author Barbara Horwitz-Bennett dives into how architect Bruce Redman Becker, faia, phcd, leed ap, Becker + Becker, Westport, Conn., transformed this 1960s Brutalist structure into the first hotel in the world, with over 100 rooms, to earn Passive House certification. The project is also one of the few LEED Platinum-certified hotels in the country. Achieving this top-tier level of energy performance, in a 60-year-old building, has generated a lot of interest. “Two major hotel chains have sent their top engineering and sustainability leadership to Hotel Marcel with the hopes of replicating our successful efforts and two other hotel groups have engaged me as a consultant to decarbonize their portfolios,”

Best Practices in Lab Lighting ›› Animal Research Facilities
The Case for Using Narrow Spectrum, Non-filtered Red LED Lighting in Animal Research Facilities The right lighting is essential in animal research facilities to support the health and wellbeing of laboratory animals and the viability of the scientific research results attained. One specific area of interest is in protecting the circadian cycles of animals by controlling light exposure during experiments. This means avoiding light-at-night (LAN) contamination during these natural dark cycles.
Understanding LAN Effects on Rodents Because approximately 95% of U.S. biomedical research animals are rodents, researchers and vivarium designers have investigated how different wavelengths of light impact these nocturnal animals. RED LIGHT
Findings show that the cones in rodents’ eyes lack sensitivity to longer wavelengths of light, anything above 620nm, which is seen as red light. This data has led to the general assumption that red light is either invisible to rodents or perceived as darkness. Because certain nighttime light levels are required for the scientists observing experiments and for caretakers moving about in the rodents’ cages, the general practice has been to specify longwavelength light for the animal holding rooms and adjacent corridors in these facilities. “Eliminating all light exposure at night in vivaria is best for both animal welfare and experimental data, but when necessary, utilizing dim red light is an effective alternative to maintain circadian organization in laboratory species,” wrote authors Emmer et al. in the article, “Effects of Light at Night on Laboratory Animals and Research Outcomes” in Behavioral Neuroscience. Some manufacturers produce troffers that provide red light by covering white LEDs with a red lens. However, these filters can degrade over time due to the plastic make-up of the lens and the heat from the fixture. The degrading filter will then cause the peak wavelength to shift over time, which may impact test data. Fortunately, there are more advanced lighting solutions which directly address this light sensitivity issue. Thanks to developments in LED technology, some manufacturers are offering a greater level of control over the spectral composition of their luminaires.

One of the nation’s premiere academic medical centers, NYU Langone Health, use far red luminaires to protect the integrity of their research. The 1 × 4 KL-S luminaire from Kurtzon Lighting is shown here. kurtzon.com
Narrow Spectrum LED Some LED fixtures emit very precise, peak wavelengths of red light, as opposed to a more haphazard blend of the wavelengths within the broader spectrum of light. Called narrow spectrum lighting fixtures, architects can choose from a fixture that emits a peak wavelength of 630nm (red), 660nm (deep red) or 735nm (far red) technology. With these fixtures, leaking white light is not an issue because white light is not produced by the light source. Furthermore, newer research on lighting and rodents has made the availability of this narrow spectrum technology even more important. In “Challenging a Myth and Misconception: Red-Light Vision in Rats,” published in the March 2020 issue of Animals, the authors state, “mesopic red-light responses [from the rodents] were surprisingly high, emphasizing that even monochromatic light 656 +/- 10nm light is, contrary to the common assumption, very well perceived by rats.” Consequently, the researchers conclude, “It is important to consider that when using red observation lights in dark settings, the light should be dim and of wavelengths as close to the infrared as possible. We advise to use monochromatic red LEDs with a peak emission of at least 660nm and to keep them as dim as possible.”
The researchers recommend lighting designers and architects specify red LED fixtures that produce narrow spectrum red light at either the 660nm or 735nm, which is even closer to infrared radiation. Dual-function fixtures, which can emit both red and/or white light, based on the time of day and need. For example, by producing light at 490nm during daytime hours, this can be of great benefit to the staff as this wavelength prevents melatonin production, which in turn promotes better sleep, health, and wellbeing, while still offering the narrow spectrum red light for evening hour observations. The ability to power wash a lighting fixture in these areas is also important. The luminaire must be able to withstand the rigorous cleaning processes that takes place in these environments. In addition, the fixtures should be UL listed for wet locations and sealed to keep insects and pests out of the fixture housing. The highest level of protection toward both ends is an IP65 rating. Specifiers are also advised to look for fixtures that have seam-welded housings and are NSFlisted with closed-cell, extruded gaskets made from a nitrile material to best resist any vermin encounters. CODES ›› Understanding Fire-Rated Roof Hatches
by BILCO
Why Roof Hatches Don’t Typically Need a Fire Rating What Architects and Contractors Need to Know
Photo: Cody Wurzer
To meet International Building Code (IBC) requirements, architects and contractors often reach out to roof hatch manufacturers in search of fire-rated roof hatches. However, except for rare cases, the code doesn’t actually require a roof hatch to be fire-rated in the U.S. To better educate the industry on this topic, BILCO commissioned building code consultants The Hickman Group to research and write a white paper to clear up confusion surrounding this topic. DECIPHERING BUILDING CODES Commonly used to access the roof area for maintenance
purposes, roof hatches are available in standard and custom sizes. They typically provide an interior ladder for users to ascend and easily unlatch a secured mechanism to access the roof. Because the IBC does not explicitly address the topic of a fire protection rating for roof hatches, the closest reference is Section 712.1.15 on skylights, which states that “unprotected skylights and other penetrations through a fire-resistance-rated roof deck or slab are permitted provided that the structural integrity of the fire-resistance-rated roof assembly is maintained.” In other words, because roof hatches are not a structural component of the roof assembly, they are not required to be firerated, even in fire-rated roofs. Exceptions apply if a building is within 15 feet of another building or has a stepped roof, in which case non-rated roof hatches or skylights are not permitted as they would affect the fire separation requirements. In these cases, fire-rated access doors are required, per Section 712.1.13.2. Reiterating once again that the non-structural nature of roof hatches exempts them from a fire rating, Section 712.1.15 states, “Fire-resistance-rated roof construction is not intended to create a barrier to contain the fire within the building, except for Exception 1 of Section 705.8.6 and the exception to Section 706.6.1. Non-fire-resistance-rated penetrations are, therefore, permitted to be installed in fire-resistance-rated roof assemblies, provided that the structural integrity of the roof assembly is not reduced and provisions of Section 705.8.6 for protection of vertical exposure do not apply.” Because roof hatches are not explicitly included in the definition of a roof assembly in IBC Section 1501, fire protection professionals refer to Section 712.1.15, which permits non-rated skylights and other penetrations through a fire-resistance-rated roof deck or slab. SOURCE OF CONFUSION The introduction of a few European roof hatch products in
the U.S. market has created additional confusion about fire protection and roof hatches. European roof hatches undergo
European fire-rated testing standards, specifically EN1634-4 and UL-EU. These products incorporate non-combustible mineral wool insulation and can achieve fire ratings of up to four hours. However, these standards are not referenced in the IBC and do not apply to U.S. fire protection standards. There is no standard for fire-rated roof hatches in the domestic market, and there is no developed fire-rated test procedure for these products in the U.S. The lack of specific mention of roof hatches and fire protection in the U.S. codes and the lack of fire-rated testing for these products further establishes that roof hatches do not need to be fire-rated, even within fire-rated assemblies, with rare exceptions. ROOFTOP TRENDS Whereas rooftops were traditionally relegated to equipment
storage, this is changing as building owners develop these areas as usable space. From gardens to walking trails to bars, rooftops continue to grow in popularity as an amenity in commercial buildings. As building codes continue to evolve, the industry may see new developments in fire-rated requirements. This could potentially drive more interest in fire-rated access doors. These specialized doors are designed to preserve the fire rating of a floor/ceiling assembly by incorporating intumescent coatings that resist the passage of heat, gases, and flames, thereby providing a higher level of safety.

Rooftops were traditionally relegated to equipment storage. This is changing as building owners develop these areas as usable space. From gardens to walking trails to bars, rooftops continue to grow in popularity as an amenity in commercial buildings.
Moving forward, to mitigate ambiguity, it could be beneficial for an IBC subsection to be developed, specifically addressing roof hatches. But for now, treating roof hatches and skylights similarly and in alignment with the prevailing expert consensus appears prudent during pre-construction planning. Furthermore, building teams should anticipate that local AHJs could take a different approach to rooftop fire protection requirements. Therefore, it is best practice for architects and construction managers to proactively engage in collaborative discussions with code officials to ensure adherence to the building codes before commencing construction.

Meet “Works with WELL”
Photos provided by International WELL Building Institute
Say hello to IWBI’s new directory that makes it easier than ever to find simple solutions to tough design challenges.
As global demand for healthy building products and solutions continues to climb, the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) continues to innovate accordingly. Meet “Works with WELL,” IWBI’s latest offering in its quest to fill the world with “people-first places” and “advance a global culture of health.” The Works with WELL licensing program aims to help manufacturers showcase how their products align with WELL strategies based on IWBI licensing criteria. “The rising demand for people-first places calls upon manufacturers to innovate products that contribute to healthy buildings, and, increasingly, companies want to demonstrate how their products support health and well-being,” says Jessica Cooper, IWBI Chief Product Officer. “The Works with WELL program helps foster that potential for health leadership by validating how their products align with WELL requirements.” To attain the new Works with WELL trademark, each product must navigate a third-party document review process to validate that it has met the licensing criteria and that the product solution supports human health and well-being. WELL’s new platform is expected to be a resource for project teams. Architects, engineers and design teams can use Works with WELL as an easier way to search and find products with specific features or thresholds that work within the WELL Building Standard. The platform will make it easier to understand what products have already been validated to support achieving certain WELL features. It also allows specifiers to compare among multiple brands and products supporting the same WELL features. “On the one hand, manufacturers including many of IWBI members are interested in validating how their products can contribute to WELL and support the healthy building movement,” says Cooper. “On the other hand, building professionals working on implementing WELL often turn to IWBI to understand which organizations offer products and services that support the achievement of specific WELL features, so the Works with WELL platform fosters transparent communications between both sides.”
Works with WELL aims to bridge the gap between the world’s WELL project specifiers and its solution makers. Milliken's Adhesives, Carpeting, Resilient Flooring, Entrance Flooring are part of its portfolio products verified by a third-party review to align with multiple WELL features. Milliken, One Step Closer milliken.com
Works with WELL is not a product certification. It is a third-party documentation review of product claims, so the buyer knows it is what it says it is in terms of supporting WELL requirements.

“Obviously, the directory will expand in 2024 and beyond as the industry gets to experience it,” says Cooper. The products that are currently listed “offer solutions for air and water quality, lighting, smart building technologies, flooring, wall coverings, furnishings, and biophilic products, as well as solutions that promote mental health, movement, nourishment, community engagement and more,” she adds. According to Cooper, manufacturers can only apply for the Works with WELL trademark if a product falls under a product type that is directly called for in any of the 100-plus features of the WELL Building Standard. Although these products are situated around the feature requirements under the 10 WELL concepts: Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind and Community, the Works with WELL product directory follows the CSI (Construction Specification Index) code at the current stage to be consistent with the industry. IWBI has mapped out 69 CSI-defined specific product types that are called for in the WELL standard and expects the total number of product types will gradually grow. —Jeff Pitts, contributing writer

MANUFACTURED STONE AND BRICK VENEER
Complementing Regional Architectural Distinctions Stylistic differences can be influenced by the local climate, historical architectural styles, and regional preferences
In the ever-evolving landscape of modern design and construction, several timeless materials have stood out for their durability, versatility, and aesthetic appeal. As two such materials, stone and brick provide strength and enduring charm that can be customized to suit a broad range of classic and contemporary designs in commercial and residential projects. They pair well with other materials and add a touch of textural elegance to any project.
Pacific Northwest Wood dominates, reflecting the abundance of timber in the area. Modern designs often incorporate large windows to maximize natural light, and sustainability is a key consideration for new projects.
Mountain West Log cabins and wooden structures are common, and stone is often used extensively for practical and aesthetic purposes. Modern architecture may incorporate a mix of traditional and contemporary materials. Complement with RoughCut or Shadow Rock from Eldorado Stone

Regional Distinctions Stylistic differences can be influenced by the local climate, historical architectural styles and regional preferences. Some broad examples include the following variations in residential architecture and design, which also extends to commercial structures and mixed-use projects Naturally, there can be significant variations based on urban or rural settings, economic factors and individual architectural preferences. In addition, contemporary trends and sustainable building practices are inspiring new style variations in all regions.
A Word on Extreme Weather Manufactured stone and brick is designed to withstand the same weather conditions as a natural material, including rain, snow and UV exposure. Leading products carry a Class A fire rating and are approved for high velocity hurricane zones to hold up under high winds. Unlike natural stone that may require sealing and periodic maintenance, manufactured veneer products require minimal upkeep.

War hero and Senator John S. McCain III demonstrated the fortitude and type of leadership that will forever be revered by those that aspire to greatness. He once said, “America’s greatest strength has always been its hopeful vision of human progress.” When the Buckeye Elementary School District, Buckeye, Ariz., decided to build its ninth school and give it McCain’s name, everyone from the superintendent to the architects knew that this school building had to step away from convention in order to live

up to its namesake. “This was going to be a very different school for the district. They wanted to be visionary and use a lot of methodologies from 21st century learning,” says Kasey Josephs, Project Manager, Orcutt | Winslow, Phoenix. In 2019, the architecture firm started the design process by helping the district with visioning and followed with community engagements. “This is not something that was designed in isolation. It was very community
focused,” says Josephs. These sessions enabled Orcutt | Winslow to understand the community’s goals, as well as how the building and its spaces could help the school achieve success with its C-STEM (computing, science, technology, engineering, and math) project-based learning curriculum and character development programs. Orcutt | Winslow’s design was a 95,000-sq.-ft. building that consists of a two-story classroom building, a one-story classroom building, a
gymnasium, cafeteria, digital commons areas, outdoor learning spaces, administrative offices, and reception lobby. While that list sounds typical, the school is anything but. Serving up to 1,000 students (grades kindergarten through 8th) in the fast-growing community of Buckeye, Ariz., John S. McCain III Elementary School has a flexible floorplan that embraces transparency, scaled spaces for mass gatherings and intimate learning, as well as the capability to serve community needs.

Orcutt | Winslow’s conceptual design theme for the school was “Taking Flight.” The life and legacy of John McCain are evident in everything from the shape of the school’s skybridge to its mascot (the Mavericks), and even embedded in its tilt-up concrete walls. Words that embody McCain’s leadership qualities (i.e., thinker, courageous, team leader, collaborative, etc.) have been turned into an alphabet of binary code, with the zeros represented as a void and ones as a line. Each tiltup panel was poured to represent a letter and spell out these words. “These stripes were formed into the tilt concrete panels before they were cast,” explains Josephs. “It creates this patterning that wraps around the building, spelling different things. On the gym, it spells mavericks.”
Use of tilt-up concrete was possible due to the spaciousness of the lot, and advantageous due to a site change that set the schedule back five months. “Because we had to build this very quickly, tilt-up panels were going to be the fastest method of construction,” she says. “With tilt, the problem is that it can start to look like a big box store.” This embedded code provides both meaning and visual interest. Construction began in November 2020 and wrapped up in July of the following year. The school opened its doors, welcoming its first students in August 2021. Despite facing all the challenges associated with building during the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was completed on time and under budget.

Learning Communities The school’s instruction areas are divided into three learning communities: grades K-3, 4-6, and 7-8. The younger grades are on the main level. “The idea is that as you’re developing through your educational journey, you move up through the school,” explains Josephs. Having

between this school and traditional elementaries is the art, library, and lab spaces. Rather than one designated space with these functions inside of a school for all students to share, each learning community has that functionality. “They have each got their own makerspace, art zone, and literacy area,” says Josephs. This not only cuts down on the time students spend moving from one side of a school building to another, but also is a more efficient use of space, reducing square footage for parts of the building (like a library) that are not in use all day. These built-in resources are just a few steps away and getting heavy use. “Kindergarteners up through 8th grade, they are all utilizing these makerspaces,” she adds. “It is not just for the older kids.”

Embracing Transparency Noticeably absent from the design are narrow classroom-lined hallways. The John S. McCain III Elementary School’s classrooms, located in each of these learning communities, feature operable glass partitions and open onto a digital commons. “Instead of your typical hallway circulation zone, that is now widened to 20 ft., and it becomes a collaborative space,” notes Josephs. With flexible furniture and dry-erase pivot walls, the large commons space can be easily configured for individual, one-on-one, and small group work. In order to maintain proper acoustic levels, Orcutt | Winslow used acoustic ceiling tile and acoustic felt.

“In between each class, the walls go all the way up to the deck and are insulated,” adds Josephs. This prevents noise transfer from one classroom to another. These breakout spaces have many benefits. They prevent bullying because of maximum visibility into and out of classrooms and it enables students who are distracted by classroom noise to sit on the other side of the glass, still maintain a visual connection, and be active participants. The use of glass isn’t just for classrooms. Literacy zones are also encased in glass. “This is one of the first schools that is really going all in on creating a fully transparent and flexible model,” Josephs says.
“At some point in time, the curriculum could develop into a model that’s not about age, but about ability grouping. This building allows for that ability to expand and be flexible.” —Kasey Josephs, Project Director, Orcutt | Winslow

The skybridge can function as a community space when school isn’t in session. Josephs explains: “They can open this area up to the public, but then lock down the individual wings so that nobody is wandering through classroom space.” The skybridge extends out at the entrance and runs all the way to the back of the building, a design inspired by an airplane wing and a nod to McCain’s time as a naval aviator piloting missions from an aircraft carrier.

The design of the skybridge, the school’s central spine, takes inspiration from the wing of an airplane, a nod to John McCain’s time as a jet fighter pilot in the navy.
The skybridge can be used as a public space by the community and is the school’s most distinctive feature with polycarbonate walls that glow at night.

Outdoor Spaces Learning doesn’t stop when kids step outside. To continue lessons outdoors, lower-level learning communities have large exterior doors that fold open accordion-style. Phoenix weather makes outdoor learning possible for a good portion of the school year. “From October to even as far into April, it’s really nice,” says Josephs. The location of these outdoor areas near classroom spaces was very intentional.
The gymnasium can open out onto an outdoor amphitheater for school and community music and theater performances.
Matt Winquist Photography
“What we have found with outdoor learning is that if you just create an area outside somewhere kind of random, it’s not going to be used. It has to be adjacent to some function that’s happening on the inside,” she explains. This strategy was also deployed when designing the gymnasium that contains a stage and is adjacent outdoors to an amphitheater. This outdoor space allows for public use, such as musical and theatrical performances.
Outdoor spaces were thoughtfully located to be adjacent to learning communities given the district’s desire to incorporate outdoor learning into the curriculum.

MODERN TRADITIONAL SITE FURNISHINGS JUDGE’S COMMENTS:
“A nice take on the modernization of traditional American landscape design.” “When it comes to site furnishings and site lighting, it is often difficult to find products that successfully toe the line between a traditional or historic existing context and more modern building additions placed within that same context. [This] does a nice job of finding that middle ground by striking a balance between modern finishes, ‘soft’ forms and refined detailing that help to blend old and new in an elegant manner.” Created in collaboration with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, renowned experts on Modern Traditional design, the Northport Collection spans the full breadth of site furnishing and lighting elements. Encompassing benches, litters, bike racks, planters, and bollards, The site furnishings offer a modern reinterpretation of the design lexicon that is foundational to so many traditional American towns and cities, historical centers, and main street districts. While fabric brings down ambient direct illumination, a top reflector with engineered perforations delivers an indirect batwing distribution for enhanced ceiling uniformity. Like other A-Light offerings, the luminaire can be fully integrated with the nLight Wired network control system for enhanced energy savings and occupant comfort.
Fixed or adjustable, with round or square trim, the REV Flex series downlights are the full package. The recessed fixtures come in a comprehensive lumen range of 820 lm to 4,590 lm and are compatible with various dimming protocols. Each downlight has three field-replaceable optics, flangeless trim options in both round and square form factors, and a wall wash option. With Colorflip color-changing W+RGB technology, the LED blends white light and vibrant color options. The design also provides better illumination options for pitched and sloped ceilings.
Lighting professionals asked for an energy efficient lighting product that can achieve high delivered lumen levels at lower wattages and high CRI for a reasonable price; the 579e series was developed in response. The high output, compact, and energy efficient LED modules give the delivered lumen performances of an 80+ CRI product (R9 = 0 out of 100) with superior color rendering over standard 90+ CRI products. Making Passive House History at Hotel Marcel Designing the first Passive House-certified hotel in the world, in the envelope of a 1960s Brutalist building, required architect Bruce Redman Becker to push boundaries in both design and product selection. by Barbara Horwitz-Bennett, contributing writer
Welcome to Hotel Marcel—the first Passive Housecertified hotel in the country, it operates fully on renewable energy, without any use of fossil fuels. Originally designed by Marcel Breuer for the Armstrong Rubber Co.’s New Haven, Conn., headquarters, the 1960s Brutalist structure consists of a floating concrete box with deeply recessed windows. The historic building sat abandoned for years until architect Bruce Redman Becker decided to purchase it and turn it into a highly sustainable boutique hotel. Passive House certification, managed by Passive House Institute (PHI), is the only internationally

recognized performance standard for air tightness and energy consumption, verified with field-tested energy modeling. Over 5,600 buildings in the world have earned Passive House certification, of which only 140 are in the United States. Hotel Marcel is the first hotel with over 100 rooms to be certified in the world. The project is also one of the few LEED Platinum-certified hotels in the country. Achieving this top-tier level of energy performance, in an existing 1960s building, has generated a lot of interest. “Two major hotel chains have sent their top engineering and sustainability leadership to Hotel Marcel with hopes of replicating our successful
efforts and two other hotel groups have engaged me as a consultant to decarbonize their portfolios,” reports Bruce Redman Becker, faia, phcd, leed ap, Becker + Becker. Westport, Conn. While Becker’s undertaking of a Passive House renovation was ambitious, a number of the building’s qualities made it a good candidate for the transformation. For example, the simple, boxshaped structure was easier to insulate and condition than others. The ultra-high-performance concrete offered thermal insulating mass and the Mosai-style concrete panels, with windows inset a full 30 ft. from the façade, provided excellent passive shading.

Tighten the Building Envelope
LEVITATING STRUCTURE
Designed by Marcel Breuer for the Armstrong Rubber Co.’s New Haven, Conn. headquarters, the Brutalist concrete design features a floating concrete form with deeply recessed windows.
SOLAR SOLUTIONS
Tightening the building envelope was a key strategy for achieving Passive House performance criteria. “The pre-cast MoSai concrete panels were air-sealed and coated with high performance insulation on their concealed interior surface, and air-sealing tapes and Aerogel blanketing were used to complete the thermal isolation of the windows without adding thickness to the original wall assembly,” explains Becker.
Maximize the Use of Daylight

The original windows were replaced with tripleglazed, argon-filled, laminated windows. In addition to the insulation, the windows also act as acoustic dampeners which is key as the hotel sits close to I-95.
1960 TO PASSIVE HOUSE
This 1960s concrete box on the New Haven harbor has been transformed into the country’s first Passive House-certified hotel. The building is all electric, net zero and LEED Platinum.
A tighter building envelope, electrified HVAC systems, PoE lighting and shading, and a microgrid scheme were all achieved in the Hotel Marcel design in New Haven, Conn.
“In its reincarnation, the building embraces sunlight—capturing its energy with over 1,000 PV panels on the roof and on exterior canopies—and distributing more daylight to the interior with the creation of two light wells and the transformation of former mechanical spaces into open-air courtyards,” says Becker. “New interior glazing, where the building’s cooling towers once stood, allows light to flood the new meeting spaces on the 9th floor where the massive trusses are now architectural features of the meeting and conference spaces.” The rooftop is outfitted with 360-watt SunPower PV panels with SMA STP Core1 62.5 kW inverters and the carport houses 470-wattSunPower units with both the SMA STP Core1 62.5 kW and 33.3 kW inverters. POWER OF THE SUN Sunpower X-series commercial solar panels for rooftops and canopies capture 22% more sunlight than conventional PV panels. Designed to perform in hot weather, low light, and partial shade, the PV cells are built on a solid metal foundation and are virtually impervious to the corrosion and cracking that degrades conventional panels. High-Efficiency, Electrified HVAC and ERV Systems To achieve Becker’s aggressive net-zero energy and Passive House goals, high-efficiency HVAC systems and energy recovery ventilation were essential strategies to drive energy costs way down. Delivering both heating and cooling are multiple Mitsubishi variable refrigerant flow (VRF) airsource heat pump systems with fans, compressors, refrigerant coils and controls within an outdoor condensing unit in addition to interior fan coil units and branch selector boxes.
To achieve net-zero energy and Passive House goals, highefficiency HVAC systems and energy recovery ventilation were essential strategies to drive energy costs way down. “We considered a Watts system, but chose Mitsubishi based on pricing and availability. It was the most cost-effective option to provide the end result,” stated Aaron Kruger, project manager, Consigli Construction, Manchester, Conn., in an Urban Green Council presentation on Energy Upgrades in Historic Buildings. By utilizing the refrigeration cycle, the VRF heat pumps can exchange heat energy between the outdoor ambient air and the interior air. “These systems have a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of approximately 3.5°F at 47°F outdoor air temperatures, which is about 350% more efficient than an electric resistance heater,” reports LN Mechanical Engineer and Project Manager Ian Donohue, P.E. The VRF systems’ simultaneous heating and cooling capabilities means that the equipment can both heat or cool individual zones at the same time and that cooling mode spaces can share their heat energy with areas in heating mode for enhanced energy savings.
HVAC SYSTEM
HVAC
Another benefit is the system’s use of CO2 as the refrigerant which has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) value of 1, compared to typical refrigerants such as R-134a and R-410a which have GWP values of 1,430 and 2,088, respectively.
As part of the Mitsubishi variable refrigerant flow (VRF) air-source heat pump system are interior fan coil units and branch selector boxes for individualized comfort control.
While the VRF heat pumps are the primary source of domestic hot water production, backup/ supplemental heating for the domestic water is provided by electric resistance water heaters. For the Swegon Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV), the system exchanges both heat and moisture energy between the outgoing exhaust air streams with the incoming outdoor air. Highly efficient, the system is capable of reducing the energy needed to condition the ventilation air by approximately 80%.
NEXT GEN VRF Offering simultaneous heating and cooling as both ducted and ductless, depending on location, is Mitsubishi’s latest N-Generation CITY MULTI system. A four-sided heat exchanger provides a greater surface area for efficient air intake and heat exchange, an improved compressor and fan design offers five airflow settings for reduced sound levels and a branch circuit controller offers more connections, significantly increasing system design possibilities.
“The incoming ventilation air is filtered by highefficiency MERV-13 rated filters which reduces the quantity of airborne pollutants. Post conditioning of the ventilation air to approximately 55 degrees supports dehumidification, reducing the indoor space humidity levels when required,” he explains. Another energy saving feature is Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes which meter the amount of ventilation air provided to and extracted from each individual ventilation zone. By monitoring CO2 levels, the ventilation air flows can be reduced during periods of low occupancy.
Mitsubishi mitsubishicomfort.com
Electrifying the kitchen, which was a first for a large hotel, involved the use of induction ranges and recirculating Type 1 grease-laden, vaporrated exhaust hoods. “The hoods utilize a selfcontained 4-stage filtration process to reduce emissions which includes a high efficiency filter/ carbon-charcoal filter pack. This enabled the ERV to provide ventilation air to the kitchen rather than installing a dedicated make-up air system” explains Donohue.
GO FOR GOLD Swegon Gold energy recovery units for ventilation provide variable air volume control air flow to different zones. Delivering significant energy efficiencies, the systems’ IQlogic control system features an easy to operate user interface.

Several incentives made the project less expensive than new construction: a 30% federal solar and battery tax credit, a 20% federal historic tax credit, as well as a state historic tax credit, CPACE financing and utility grants. In addition, a lowered overall utility bill.
PoE Lighting and Shading Another unique aspect of the electric design is the use of Power over Ethernet (PoE) lighting and shading systems, designed and installed by Sinclair Digital.
Realizing a Microgrid Scheme Overall, the mechanical and electrical engineers had to contend with the formidable challenge of converting the design of an existing building with gas and electric equipment and no alternative energy sources into one with all electric systems and the integration of a battery energy storage system (BESS).
In addition, the team had to work closely with the local AHJ for approvals as the relevant building codes were vague as to what was allowed. Energy modeling demonstrated energy cost savings over the ASHRAE baseline system of approximately 80%. When asked about the investment required for the highly sustainable conversion Becker explains that several incentives actually made the project less expensive than new construction. He lists a 30% federal solar and battery tax credit, a 20% federal historic tax credit, as well as a state historic tax credit, CPACE financing and utility grants. In addition, the lowered overall utility bill will pay out dividends over the building’s lifetime.
A battery energy storage system enables energy from renewables, like solar and wind, to be stored and released when the power is needed. In the case of Hotel Marcel, it allows the hotel to be powered by green energy, even when the PV panels aren’t actively capturing solar energy—at night or on overcast days. Energy can also be released from the battery storage system during times of peak demand, keeping energy costs down and electricity flowing.
MICROGRIDS
“PoE lighting allowed us to ‘gut’ the existing fixtures and use LED lights without having to buy new LED drivers. This allowed the voltage levels for all the lighting to be in the 24-volt to 48-volt range,” explains Askew. “PoE lighting also allows the ‘power’ cable to be the ‘control’ cable, reducing wiring since now only one cable needs to be run. It also made running circuits less expensive since conduit or metal-clad cable is not required at these lower voltage levels.”
“Coordinating the BESS with the photovoltaic system and utility power supplies, the system started to get complicated,” relates John Askew, P.E., principal, LN Consulting, Burlington, Vt.
Another reason for PoE lighting was the project’s use of digital energy transmission systems. The Voltserver takes 120-volt or 277-volt AC power and converts it into ‘digital energy’ which is sent to a receiver that converts it to a usable voltage, in this case 24 volts. This then negates the need for higher voltage AC power for lighting.
“The project actually had to go through two microgrid control system designers to find one that could implement what the design team was trying to do,” he adds.

With Ageto’s energy management software, facility managers can easily view a real-time snapshot of microgrid performance. The robust system enables managers to control multiple systems, including on-site solar power, a battery energy storage system, and power from the utility, for more seamless load shedding, peak shaving, off grid and synchronization with the utility. The microgrid data dashboard supports maximized renewable energy use and outage prevention.
While PV and BESS systems are not new, very few facilities have attempted to implement a microgrid scheme which was needed for load shedding, peak shaving, battery charging, off grid use and synchronization with the utility.
More than 900 automated roller window shades with PoE (Power over Ethernet) technology from PowerShades were installed at Hotel Marcel. As the industry’s first and only PoE automated shade system, a single CAT5 cable provides both power and communications, so no proprietary hard wiring is needed. Further, the motor is low voltage and doesn’t require a licensed electrician for installation. “New hardwood window surrounds follow the geometry of the original angled plaster sills and jambs, and incorporate a shade pocket for the window shades,” Becker explains.

n many cases, completed projects can serve as excellent teaching tools for demonstrating what can be accomplished architecturally in a space and how to best accomplish it. This course explores some of the lessons learned during the recent completion of several different types of projects. In Chicago, an oft-avoided exterior space is transformed into a gathering place that unites two neighborhoods with the custom creation of 40-ft.-tall light masts that create a vibrant, safe, and evenly illuminated atmosphere after hours. In Santa Fe, a building originally designed and constructed by John Gaw Meem in 1939 was carefully restored to its original Spanish-Pueblo Revival style, which required demolishing an outmoded 1970s two-story infill structure that occupied the courtyard. Architecture, design, and construction firm The Beck Group shares insights it gleaned while renovating its headquarters and creating a corporate office environment that heightened employee comfort, concen-
tration, and collaboration. This course also includes tips for creating workspaces that boost wellbeing by applying the principles of neuro-architecture through the use of art, color, lighting and design. Let’s begin with a surprising material that is emerging as a solution for a myriad of design challenges. This is best showcased in the creative ways it has been recently used, but first, we will introduce this versatile component. MATERIAL INTRODUCTION
RESISTANCE-WELDED, STAINLESS-STEEL, SURFACE WIRE-ON-SUPPORT ROD
In 1905, a St. Paul, Minn., entrepreneur began designing and fabricating stainless steel screens for water well applications. Edward Johnson’s unique, patented designs for filter screens soon made Johnson Screens a preferred brand for filtration and separation applications across many water process and industrial

applications. Almost 100 years after the company was founded, a world-renowned architectural lighting designer was attracted to the beauty and functionality of Johnson Screens’ unique resistance-welded, stainless-steel wire-on-rod material. As a result of this chance discovery, Johnson Architectural Elements was specified for the double-walled façade that covers the lower six stories of 7 World Trade Center in lower Manhattan—the first WTC building to rise after 9/11. Since then, this material has been used in over 40 architectural applications—from fairly mundane HVAC diffusers and entrance floor grilles, to soaring facades and dramatic light towers. The resistance welded screens are fabricated in tightly controlled, automated processes in a factory setting. The specialized fabrication equipment produces perfectly uniform configurations using almost-limitless combinations of semi-elliptical, triangular, and rectangular surface wire and support

rod profiles. The screens, grilles, and grates can be further customized by selecting from multiple steel and copper alloys, varying the surface wire and support rod spacings, and choosing from a wide variety of surface finishes. The broad customizability of this material affords designers a veritable Swiss Army Knife of solutions for difficult architectural specialty metals problems—both aesthetic and performance related. SURFACE WIRES & SLOT WIDTH
To produce the chosen surface wire, wire of a specified gauge is pulled through a series of dies that shape the wire profile. The wire profiles have unique aesthetic properties—including how light is reflected—and performance properties that affect air or water movement, light transmission, structural load, and other attributes. The slot is defined as the space between surface wires. By varying the slot width designers can create a desired openness or opacity to achieve a specific look or to affect the transmission of air, water, sound, or light. SUPPORT RODS & ROD SPACING
As with surface wires, support rods are available in a wide variety of profiles and gauges. The primary function of support rods is to provide adequate structural strength for the application. The structural performance properties of the support rod, in combination with how the rods are spaced in the matrix, determine the overall structural performance of the finished product.
finish selections are primarily driven by aesthetics, but the chemical passivation process accelerates the development of the weatherable oxidized layer that make stainless steel “stainless,” and the mostaggressive blasting process imparts a high-friction, slip-resistant surface for foot traffic applications. ADDITIONAL CUSTOMIZATION OPPORTUNITIES
Beyond these main design considerations, designers may choose to vary the slot width, tilt the surface wires, and add custom frames and attachment systems. This material also offers incredible flexibility in terms of form and can be shaped into almost any imaginable design. Screens can be flat, cylindrical, or curved, round, straight, oblique, or inside out. Design professionals have used this material to address a multitude of difficult issues and create a variety of stunning architectural achievements. Here are just a few of the ways that resistance-welded, stainless steel, surface wire-on-support rod material has been applied in architecture: • Unique lighting elements—from delicate bollards to clusters of towering light masts. • Grating—ventilation grates, drainage grates, wheelchair access ramps, stairs, and footbridges. • Landscape elements—versatile, stable, and functional stainless-steel products such as custom trench drains, benches, fences, site amenities, tree grates, handrails, and footbridge decking, are ideal for residential, commercial, and public spaces. • Interior applications—transform ceilings, walls, structural columns, stair treads, and infills into stunning decorative elements. • Exterior applications—hide technical equipment, protect glass windows from impacts, enhance safety and security, and provide a dramatic visual effect. As was previously mentioned, perhaps the best example of the versatility this material offers an exterior application is the custom façade panels on 7 World Trade Center, designed by James Carpenter Design Associates in conjunction with SOM. • Art and sculptures—local, national, and international artists and designers have used these stainless-steel screens to create incredible monuments and structures that reflect their unique creative vision. • Custom applications—whatever an architect can imagine, the screen solution can achieve.
MATERIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Stainless steel is available in dozens of specific alloys. The grades of stainless steel determine important performance properties, including ductility, corrosion resistance, and structural performance. 304 stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant steel with excellent strength, toughness, fabrication characteristics, and weldability. It is the most commonly used stainless steel. The low carbon version, 304L, may be required for its superior corrosion resistance for immersion in water or in salt-air environments. Other stainless-steel alloys or specialty alloys with unique properties of form and function are available. SURFACE FINISHES
Finish options include a wide offering of chemical treatments, physical abrasion processes (blasting), and high-performance architectural coatings. Surface

THE LIGHT MASTS AT MIDWAY CROSSINGS
The Midway Crossings is the name of a project recently undertaken for the University of Chicago and the Chicago Parks Department. The historic site contained a neglected area that bisected the University into north and south campuses and effectively divided the underserved South Side and the more affluent Hyde Park. Students and the public generally avoided this area, referred to as Midway, at night. The goal of Midway Crossings was to replace the void and reframe the perception that existed. The design team, which consisted of Schuler Shook and the James Carpenter Design Associates, leaned into Frederick Law Olmsted’s original vision for the site, which was to create a canal linking Lake Michigan to an inland lagoon with spanning bridges at each of

the five intersecting roadway crossings. The project was never completed, and the excavated sections are now used as sunken playing fields, while the cross streets remain at the higher elevation. The decision was made to fill the often-deserted area with articulating and fascinating light commonly experienced along watercourses. According to the team at Schuler Shook, “40-ft.-tall light masts were created that emit light for most of their height, rather than lighting from the top down as a conventional light fixture on a pole might do. Marching across the symbolic bridges at evenly spaced intervals, they create a visual rhythm and glowing connection north and south. The vertical light cast from the light masts illuminates pedestrians’ faces, creating a sense of safety and visibility.” The unique light masts were designed by James Carpenter Design Associates. They feature the stainless-steel screen material that enwraps a clear tube with a metal halide fixture concealed in the base. According to the Schuler Shook website, “That fixture directs light up through a light pipe, which refracts the light outward as a continuous and uniform glow. The design also allows daylight to penetrate the tube, so they have a glow and sparkle even during the day. The team created a fusion of natural elements with a timeless design that symbolizes the direction in which the university and the neighborhoods wish to look.” The light feature at Midway Crossings provides a means of wayfinding and a sense of identity for this place that is now enjoyed by the two communities it once separated.

Glass, Windows
Fractal-Inspired Façade ODA’s stacked glass exterior creates a visual effect of depth, lightness, and balance.
Residents at 101 West 14th Street in New York City are living inside of a piece of art. ODA’s mixed-use building is a fresh new way to envision the building blocks of architecture, and a move that cubist artists like Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso would have whole-heartedly embraced. Those painters made sense of the world by fracturing the lines and planes of forms into geometric shapes. Recent designs by ODA, including 101 West 14th Street, take a strikingly similar approach. However, where the cubist painters rejected the tradition of copying nature, ODA’s fractalinspired façade actually draws inspiration from it. “Situated at the intersection of two of New York City’s most desirable neighborhoods—Chelsea and Greenwich Village—101 West 14th Street is significant to 14th Street’s evolution into its own residential corridor,” says Eran Chen, aia, Founder and Executive Director, ODA, New York City. At the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue (referred to as Avenue of the Americas), the condominium is part of a trend toward mid-size developments where buyers feel less like a number and more like a part of a small community within the big city.
OPERABLE WINDOWS
The thermally insulated Schüco Aluminum Window System AWS 114 was customized for 101 West 14th Street. The innovative window system with large vent dimensions integrates seamlessly without adversely affecting the uniform facade geometry. It was ideal for this application because double and triple insulating glass with glass thicknesses from 1-1/8-in. to 2-1/16-in. (28 mm to 52 mm) can be integrated into the highly thermally insulated Schüco AWS 114 system.

ODA started the design process for Developer Gemini Rosemont in late 2017 and the building was opened to residents in 2022. The 13-story building contains 44 one- to four-bedroom apartments (many with duplex style layouts, 20-ft. tall ceilings, and private outdoor spaces). There is 5,360 sq. ft. of retail space for two tenants on the cellar and ground floors. The building’s fractal-inspired geometry has become a bit of a signature style for ODA. “A fractal is the concept of a never-ending pattern, one that repeats itself across different scales,” notes Chen. Fractals can be found in nature in the tributaries and distributaries of waterways, and in the shapes and forms of leaves, clouds, and snowflakes. “Studies have shown that we respond positively to these patterns, and that they activate alpha brain waves.” At 101 West 14th Street, the façade is comprised of glass-faced cubes in various sizes, some cantilevered and others recessed. “We embraced the theory of repeating the pattern found in a single unit at larger scales across the façade until we reached the overall building [design],” explains Chen. The large expanses of glass, combined with the cubic forms and rhythmic pattern creates a visual effect of depth, lightness, and balance.

The design isn’t just stunning, it’s practical. “Most units also include outdoor terraces within uniquely recessed spaces in the geometric façade of the building, creating fully covered outdoor private areas,” adds Chen. And even when residents haven’t pushed

The oversized, floor-toceiling 18-ft.-high insulating glass units were a custom order that was fabricated in Italy’s Veneto region by Isoterglass, a company that specializes in the production of insulating glass for façades. The inner lites on the streetfacing façade are laminated, which helps to reduce noise interference from the busy intersection below.

A proprietary curtain wall system, designed by Custom Metalcrafters (CMI), was customized for 101 West 14th Street. Much of the metal cladding for the curtain wall was fabricated in the factory, a process that was both detailed and tedious, but resulted in a façade where the required joints, splices, and corners line up almost perfectly.

open the retracting doors to get some fresh air, the massive glass walls provide views of the city and abundant natural light. “Their transparency offers residents a new perspective and stronger connection to the surrounding cityscape,” he says. When privacy or daylight management is desired, Lutron’s smart home wirelessly controlled window shades provide it. 101 West 14th Street demonstrates ODA’s commitment to using premium materials and building strong partnerships with experts in engineering design, fabrication, and installation. ODA worked with façade consultant Laufs Engineering Design (LED) throughout all phases of the project with the aim of achieving strict goals for energy performance. Whereas some predominantly glass buildings have issues with energy efficiency and excessive

solar heat gain, the large expanses of laminated insulated glass units at 101 West 14th Street reduce the amount of aluminum connections where the U-value is lower. And because the center of the glass performs better than the perimeter, the larger panels improve the area’s weighted total U-value. Façade contractor Custom Metalcrafters (CMI) used Pielle Aluminum Systems for most of the shop fabrication work. By installing as much of the metal cladding as possible onto the curtain wall panels in the factory, the time and imprecision associated with field installation was eliminated. Except for field-installed soffit panels, nearly all the metal panels on the face of the building were assembled into the curtain wall in the factory before installation.
According to Chen, “The sandwich panels that frame the large glass spans are made out of solid aluminum sheets that are then bent to provide profiles. The external projected fins and façade unit frames are made out of extruded aluminum profiles. They were assembled together with fasteners from behind to conceal any visible screws.” All exterior aluminum panels and frames were powder coated according to AAMA 2604 for weather resistance. Installation of the large façade panels required a detailed hoisting plan and a spider crane located one floor above. Careful selection of superior products, a design that captivates the mind and calms the spirit, and a dedication to precision engineering and fabrication have resulted in a stunning façade. 101 West 14th Street will continue to wow for many years to come.

“Brava Tile’s products allowed the Shrine to be able to have that slate look without having to spend a huge amount of money to design the structure to be able to hold the weight of real slate,” stated Paul Goodman, CEO of the Oklahoma City-based roofing contractor Goodman Construction. This also simplified installation and made the ongoing roof maintenance much easier.

team discovered Brava Tile. Not only was their composite Spanish Barrel Tile and Slate capable of both emulating the authentic earthen tile look and weathering the elements, but the lighter weight synthetic material was much more affordable.
Synthetic Spanish barrel tile and slate lend an authentic and majestic visual for the expansive rooftop. The size and complexity of the roofing systems required mock ups and careful project team coordination to customize the long runs and different sized domes.
“The Brava roofing is really the very first thing that people track to, their eyes are immediately captivated,” said Jason Spoolstra the Shrine’s director of pilgrimage. “Their heads turn and whoosh, [they ask] ‘What is that place?’ and they’re struck by the beauty of it.”
Design Assist Goodman’s team was excited to use Brava’s flat slate profile and taller tile profile in creative ways, which included long runs and multiple compound radiuses for the large domes. In all, 37,000 sq. ft. of Brava Spanish Barrel Tile and 7,500 sq. ft. of Brava Slate in a reddish brown Antigua color were installed on the massive rooftops. The Shrine’s standout dome is 34-ft. tall with a circumference of 40 ft.
Due to the size and intricacies of the project, Brava was involved in the process of adapting its materials to the complex geometries of the structure. “Our technical support team built a scale model dome section in our Iowa plant and validated installation guidance for the many domes on the Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine. We provided detailed

technical specifications and installation guidance to ensure that our roofing solutions were seamlessly integrated into the architectural vision. Additionally, we offered custom solutions to accommodate the unique aesthetic and functional requirements of the project,” explains Brava Roof Tile Technical Support Manager Daniel Emery. The end result is a grandiose main sanctuary with seating for more than 1,800 people, a chapel, ministry facilities, a welcome center and a museum. In addition to the authentic-looking Spanish barrel tile and slate in flat and steep profiles, as well as the various sized domes, the roofing systems are ready to brave the hail, ice, heat, and wind in tornadoprone Oklahoma City.

Keith Fine, aia, is a principal and director of innovation for the SLAM Collaborative.
Leveraging the Power of Virtual Design and Collaboration SLAM Collaborative’s virtual workflow engages project teams and end users in their design process with immersive, 3D technology.
Tasked with designing a complicated, fast-tracked imaging, procedure and surgery center in late 2019, SLAM Collaborative set up extensive meetings with 18 different departments. Then the first wave of COVID hit. So instead of multiple rounds of design and end-user approvals for each room, the architects had only one virtual meeting with the doctors before the pandemic overloaded their schedules. Forced to create a new project delivery process, Keith Fine, aia, principal and director of innovation for the firm, spearheaded the creation of a virtual workflow.
“We’re working with a Generative/ Artificial Intelligence company to further develop tools to augment our visualization process.”
The highly developed model was then used to validate the infrastructure design and placement in the field. This level or accuracy significantly reduced rework, change orders and waste. In fact, the first time the virtual workflow was employed, the design team caught more than 40 issues which were then adjusted during rough-in before any walls were closed. “Without this process, the majority of these issues would likely have been caught during later walks or landed on a punch list, delaying opening, causing out of sequence work and change orders,” he says. SLAM continued to develop the virtual workflow including features like image capture technology and customized modular and templating solutions. “We also have a highly structured process to validate the design utilizing these hyper-detailed models to ensure the project is built correctly as it’s assembled.”
—Keith Fine, aia, SLAM Collaborative
By connecting a gaming engine with Revit models, and leveraging 3D Spatial technology, the team created a platform where designers and end-users could virtually participate in the process of collaboratively developing the 3D model for the building. “We basically immersed our client in their proposed project, and updated and revised the space around them in real time. We built these rooms and all of their contents to a much higher degree of detail than a 2D plan, thereby driving a more realistic and deeper understanding of the decisions they were making,” explains Fine.

Demonstrating the effectiveness of the process, Fine shares a recent experience designing a procedure suite for a healthcare client. When the department head acquired a new software suite, the focus shifted entirely toward supporting the physician conducting the procedure, but to the detriment of the patient’s viewing experience. By utilizing visualization technology and a VR headset, the team was able to experiment with different positions and orientations for the equipment. This enabled the team to find an optimized design solution benefiting both the surgeon and patient. Another virtual workflow design success story
VIRTUAL TO REALITY
Using SLAM Collaborative’s virtual workflow process, Califia Farm employees played an active role in the design of their new Los Angeles headquarters.
is Califia Farm’s 30,000 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor headquarters in Los Angeles. Challenged with bringing employees back to the office for in-person collaboration, and strengthening relationships and company culture, the organic, plant-based beverage company needed to come up with the right blend of amenities and a diversity of work settings. Through the experiential design process, the architects, contractor and end user experimented with different options. This supported a more collaborative study of design details and expedited consensus building, in addition to building excitement as the design took shape. Employees are now enjoying the variety of work setups which they themselves helped create. —Barbara Horwitz-Bennett, contributing writer
