Those in the total efficiency camp feel less is more when it comes to monolithic glass façades, yet such restrictions can stifle architectural creativity. While not necessarily an ultimate answer to this argument, the good news is that glazing innovations are making an effective dent in envelope performance. Page 29.

BEST PRACTICES IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION ›› PLUG LOADS
Plug Load Control When you leave work for the evening, you turn off your task light and shut down your computer. But did you know that when equipment is plugged in, it continues to draw power—even if it’s not in use? Energy consumed at the electrical outlet—or plug load—has become a large area of focus for building owners and facilities managers. Reducing energy wasted when equipment is not in use is accomplished through plug load control. Energy consumed at the plug load is a major contributor to a building’s energy use and must be addressed to comply with updated energy codes.
ASHRAE 90.1 Section 8.4.2 (2013) This energy efficiency standard applies to nonresidential spaces and mandates at least 50% of all 125V, 15A and 20A receptacles must run on an automatic control device that turns power on and off based on a schedule, occupancy sensor or a signal from another control system. Plug load control requirements apply to private offices, conference room, break rooms, classrooms and individual workstations. In addition, ASHRAE 90.1 stipulates that at least 25% of branch circuit feeders installed for modular furniture must be controlled. All controllable receptacles must have a permanent marking to differentiate them from uncontrolled receptacles. The universally recognized power symbol must be visible on the outlet after installation per the NEC, and is intended to alert users which receptacles have constant power and which are turned off on nights and weekends to conserve energy.

Manufacturers have developed code-compliant automated control devices to help you accomplish plug load control. Select a method—or combination of methods—for plug load control that best meets your specific needs. Available options include individual load control, entire circuit control, control of single spaces or control of entire facilities. You can also choose plug load controls based on their method— occupancy, time-based or system-based. It is important to note that plug-in devices cannot be used in place of hard-wired controls, as they could be easily defeated by end users. For added convenience, choose plug load receptacles that can be integrated with a building control system so the facility manager can scale the efficiencies of such a system.
For added convenience, choose plug load receptacles that can be integrated with the building control system so the facility manager can scale efficiencies of such a system.
Know the Codes Energy codes vary by state and local jurisdictions. According to the Department of Energy, as of February 2017, approximately half of the United States has an energy code that is equal to or more stringent than ASHRAE 90.1. Check local building codes at energycodes.gov to ensure a project is in compliance and consider hiring a consultant or in-house specialist to make sure it is right.
Be More Productive Installing circuit controls does not need to be a laborious wiring and commissioning exercise for the installer. Wireless products, like the Pass & Seymour Plug Load RF Receptacle, will help avoid the added step of wiring from a relay down to the receptacle circuit and allows one sensor to control both lighting and plug load in a space with just one power pack. Wireless solutions also give the flexibility to reconfigure spaces in the future without having to re-wire to meet new energy codes. Even simpler solutions, like the Pass & Seymour Plug Load Timer Receptacle, allow for control of single loads and single circuits with the easy swapout of one receptacle. To learn more or request assistance on a project, visit legrand.us/plugload.
Occupancy and vacancy sensors maximize energy savings, ensuring that lights are turned off or to a lower level when spaces are unoccupied or adequate daylight exists.
Energy consumed at the plug load is a major contributor to a commercial building’s overall energy use and it should be addressed to comply with updated energy codes.

BEST PRACTICES IN RECYCLING ›› CARPET REUSE
Optimizing Carpet From Manufacturing to Reuse Editor’s note: Following is the first in a series examining manufacturers who have adopted C2C. What if used carpet never had to be sent to the landfill? What if it could remain within a clean, continuous cycle of use and reuse? The development of Shaw Industries’ EcoWorx, the world’s first Cradle to Cradle Certified carpet tile, is a pinnacle example of the entwined nature of sustainability optimization. Designing for reuse—to create a carpet tile that could be infinitely recycled with no loss of quality—meant removing PVC, phthalates and other chemicals. The desire to cycle safe ingredients during product manufacture ensures its seamless flow back into the raw material stream for reuse into new carpet tiles. “We know what’s in EcoWorx products and therefore what’s going into the next generation of our products as we take back this carpet at the end of its useful life on the floors of offices, stores, schools and other facilities throughout the world,” says Tim Conway, Shaw’s vice president of global accounts. “It is a very clean process.” Just as essential was developing a take back program—the industry’s first—that would ensure the connection of the circular economy. Today, the company reclaims millions of pounds annually. Most notably, the company recovers the carpet at no cost to the end user because they want their raw material back to make new carpeting, and each tile is labeled with a toll-free number on the back to facilitate the process. Today, with 16 years and more than 3 billion square feet of EcoWorx installed, there is an increasing stream of high-quality material coming back into the manufacturing process as buildings are renovated, reducing the reliance on raw material feedstock overall.
Broad Influence Following the introduction of EcoWorx, Shaw spent three years phasing out carpet tile products that contained PVC and phthalates, completing the process in 2003. Beginning with the end in mind during the product development ensures that optimization is a key driver from the early stages so there is no need to work backward. Today, more than 65% of the company’s sales of internally manufactured products are Cradle to Cradle Certified, which includes 92% of commercial carpet products, 60% of residential carpets, and 100% of Shaw’s hardwood flooring products.

C2C RECLAIMABLE Shaw’s Patcraft Deconstructed Black collection is shown above in the Dismantle style, features EcoWorx backing.
And that percentage continues to grow as Shaw has additional product categories assessed. The Cradle to Cradle Certified mark provides a clear, visible and tangible validation of a manufacturer’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, offering third-party verification across five attributes: material health, material reutilization, renewable energy, water stewardship and social fairness. Recently, the company tackled NPE, a surfactant used in carpet binders that was identified as a banned chemical in Cradle to Cradle version 3, released in 2013. Shaw worked with its supplier to remove the chemical from its latex. And because that latex is used by a number of manufacturers, the healthier chemistry is now present in many flooring products, even from those companies not currently participating in Cradle to Cradle. Additionally, Shaw has partnered with other suppliers to help bring Cradle to Cradle Certified products to the market—such as installation adhesives—going beyond its primary product to those needed to create a more sustainable system of products, such as Shaw 5000, a water-based product that was the first liquid adhesive to be Cradle

Unraveling Custom Carpets At the Hilton West Palm Beach, the organic nature of water, beaches, nets and sails influenced the carpet design.
One of the advantages to using large-scale broadloom carpet found in hotel and hospitality designs is that they may be custom designed to evoke the sense of place even inside of a large ballroom or lobby. AP spoke to interior designer and architect, Jim Looney, president of Looney & Assocs., about his experience designing with Axminster carpet. For 21 years, Looney has specialized in interior design for hospitality environments at 4 to 5 star properties. Recently, for his client the Related Companies, Looney specified custom Axminster carpet from Brintons at Hilton West Palm Beach property. Looney says, “The reason we like to use it so often in our properties is from a construction, durability and environmental standpoint. [It is 80% wool and 20% nylon.]” He adds, “More and more hospitality environments are seeking LEED certification, and this product helps in that regard.” Looney says the process is simple, and working with seasoned carpet designers affords maximum design flexibility. “Yarn colors are almost infinite, and manufacturers have experienced artists that are capable of translating a complex design idea into carpet because of their depth of knowledge about color and yarn placement, they think ahead and check all the boxes when we are designing.” From an owner’s perspective, the carpets are extremely durable with a lifecycle that can withstand highly trafficked public areas such as lobbies and corridors. At the Hilton West Palm Beach, the organic nature of water, beaches, nets, and sails influenced the design, says Looney. “We’re able to put those big ideas on paper and Brintons is able to take those ideas and translate it into a carpet design.” The design team uses several software platforms to communicate their ideas and concepts back and forth throughout the design development and production phases. “We can specify line weight, texture, shade or hue of blue and they’re great about working with us to come up with exactly what we had in mind.” The carpet often becomes the “hero” in a large, angular space, says Looney. “The carpet gives us a way to soften the ballroom because we can use so many different colors and the organic edges form lines that are nice juxtaposition of the more rigid architecture of walls and ceilings.” Variations on the carpet design also serve as intuitive signage in wayfinding; for instance, at the Palm Beach Hilton the guestroom corridor has an interesting geometry, so the team devised a more rectilinear design with movement in a nice organic rhythm.

MATERIALS: REUSABLE BUILDING MATERIALS
ARUP’s Spinning Circles Around the Circular Economy The London Design Festival brought to light several worthwhile design principles that are gaining momentum in the North American architectural market, including Arup’s Circular Building, a project that puts the Circular Economy at the forefront of design and re-use.
The January-February issue of AP covered a project at the London Design Festival showcasing the capabilities of CLT (Cross-laminated Timbers); now AP is exposing the Circular Building, a project by Arup that puts the concept of the Circular Economy at the forefront of design. This is not surprising as finite natural resources have become scarcer, raw material prices have increased, as have the value of finished products. Consequently, companies, design firms and communities planning for sustainable
and resilient futures are beginning to envision buildings as “material banks,” dealing with buildings like life-sized Legos; after all, Legos can be re-used for generations and like finite resources, have only increased in value. Just like Legos, Arup’s Circular Building came with its own assembly manual, recall members of Arup’s Circular Building Design team, Principal Jim Quitter [San Francisco], and Principal Tom Kennedy, [New York]. “We prepared a very simple and straightforward assembly manual to aid the CNC shop, the panel assembly shop and the contractors to put the building together.”

All assemblies were detailed as demountable structures to allow all materials to be reclaimed and re-used should the building be moved: “The panel assembly team took the pieces from the CNC shop, each piece being carefully labeled independently following a sequence that would relate to the each type of panel. With the instructions, they put each panel together and labeled them with their unique code to be sent to site. Once they got on site, the contractor took the same manual and used it to crane the panels
in place,” explain Arup team members. Approaching the conclusion of the London Design Festival, it was uncertain whether all building products and materials could be economically reclaimed and re-used; however, the theory of the Circular-Building prevailed in practice: “All of our collaborators were very keen to extend the life of the project and the lease of their materials, which means the Circular Building will be repurposed.” In fact, reports the Arup team; all involved are intent on reusing the Circular
Building, and currently members are discussing the best use and its next location. Many variables affect whether the Circular Building is a demo, or if this is the wave of the future. One thing is certain, says Arup: re-use and reclamation logistics beats the environmental costs of landfill and virgin raw material extraction.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING: PROJECT SNAPSHOT
ASID HQ Goes Platinum with Health Focus ASID members are lauding its Washington, D.C. offices for walking the talk of health and well-being in the built environment, as the headquarters recently received LEED Platinum from the USGBC. ASID’s Platinum designation illustrates the commitment and efforts of ASID and Perkins+Will to include advanced sustainable design practices in the creation of a workspace, says ASID CEO Randy Fiser. “Physical and mental health issues such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and stress, can all be influenced by the choices we make when designing the built environment. ASID is committed to advocate for the integration of health and wellness in all spaces, buildings and communities.” Fiser couldn’t be more pleased with the accomplishment, “We are immensely proud of the efforts of our project team that enabled ASID to achieve LEED Platinum.” Fiser believes the Platinum rating represents an investment in ASID members, and employees; it proselytizes human-centric design, including a human-centric lighting design developed to optimize performance by helping regulate the body’s circadian rhythms. “The new ASID headquarters is leading the way in creating a workplace that is both good for the environment and good for people,” concurs Perkins+Will principal, Ken Wilson.

Key design elements, such as the space’s realtime dashboard of environmental attributes, ties innovation, technology and nature-based design to the core principles of LEED. The biophilic design strategies include natural elements to reduce stress and increase air quality, along with stringent water quality standards. “Sustainability and health are intertwined and the design of this space focuses on attaining the highest levels of both,” says Wilson. The facility is also designed to meet WELL Building Standard, a performance-based Certification that indicates a human-health-centric design has been achieved, measured and proven successful on several fronts including air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, mind and comfort. “The ASID workspace is a living laboratory and a tool to advance research and education around health, wellness and wellbeing,” Fiser tells AP.

ENERGY: GLAZING INNOVATIONS
Sluggish Glass Gets a Boost Electrochromic glass can take up to 20 minutes to fully shade-in a panel of about 27 sq .ft., say researchers at the Fraunhöfer Institute for Applied Polymer Research (IAP). Working with Tilse Formglas GmbH; the duo have developed an electrochromic glass that will shade 10 times quicker at a lower voltage; and, as an added bonus, offers a palette of tintable colors including red and purple. Using several ‘flavors’ of monomers will enable the multiple colors, while providing the same rapidity of tinting. Perhaps more compelling than the prospect of colorful window glass is its increased durability; panels may be used in buildings as walkable glass floors or overhead glazing. riven by the rising cost of energy, increasingly stricter energy codes and a greater interest in occupant comfort, high-performance glazing continues to be a go-to specification for today’s commercial projects. “LEED certification, the Living Building Challenge and other related designations are aspirations for the building team,” reports Leigh Anne Mays, national architectural services manager, Guardian Glass North America. As a result, architects are driving increased use of higher performing glass and other energy and resourceefficient building products. As glass technologies continue to develop, a wide variety of coatings, tinted glass colors and printing options are providing designers with multiple ways to bring in light and views, where desired, and filter sunlight in areas where glare may be a concern, says Alissa Schmidt, LEED AP BD+C, technical resources manager, Viracon, Owatonna, Minn. Despite the many high-performance glazing selections, Dennis O’Shaughnessy, research and development director, Vitro, Pittsburgh, observes that architects and building owners overwhelmingly prefer the neutral color and refl ectivity of clear glass. As a result, PPG, now Vitro, has put a lot of
Offering some historical perspective, O’Shaughnessy explains that a double-silver coating on a tinted glass substrate was traditionally the only way to meet evolving solar control standards. However, the market is moving towards clear glass aesthetics in lieu of tinted glass. As a glass fabricator, notes Gary McQueen, director of architectural services, J.E. Berkowitz, Pedricktown, N.J., the company relies on glass manufacturers to provide a wide variety of neutral and reflective low-E coating options that maximize visible light transmittance, while delivering a clean, neutral aesthetic. “At first, we tried to bridge that gap by introducing Solarban 80 glass, a double-silver glass with thicker silver layers to enhance solar control,” responds O’Shaughnessy, “but it had a highlyreflective aesthetic that wasn’t really in fashion with architects at the time.” Ultimately, PPG saw triplesilver-coated glass as the only viable way to meet competing demands for greater transparency and better solar control.
The market is moving toward clear glass aesthetics in lieu of tinted glass. TERRY THOMAS
Revisiting PPG’s First Triple-Glazing Installation Making its debut in Seattle’s Terry Thomas office mid-rise back in 2008, Vitro’s Solarban 70XL triple glazing remains one of the industry’s top performing glazing technologies a decade later.

Reflecting back on this American Institute of Architects/Committee on the Environment “Top Ten” green building project, Myer Harrell AIA, LEED AP BD+C, homes, principal, director of sustainability, for project architectWeber Thompson, Seattle, recalls sorting through the various glazing options presented by the contractor RAFN, and ultimately selecting Solarban 70XL based on its combination of affordability and excellent performance.
TERRY THOMAS Still delivering one of the industry’s most competitive lightto-solar gain ratios, Seattle’s Terry Thomas mid-rise office complex designed by Weber Thompson, was Vitro/PPG’s first installation of its triple-glazed Solarban 70XL glass back in 2008.
“The value of triple glazing is primarily in the lower U-factor due to the thicker glass makeup with two air or argon-fill gaps,” explains Guardian’s Mays. More popular in colder climates where U-value is more critical, triple glazing is also more commonly specified for building types like universities and government facilities seeking a longer-term investment in energy efficiency. Made up of three glass layers, separated by two spacers in between and around the perimeter, these air gaps provide the insulating layers that slow down heat loss and reduce the opportunity for condensation to form. When considering triple glazed units, Mays advises examining the following factors: u The size of the air space, the type of spacer and the assembly of the insulated glazing unit as all contribute to the insulating value. u The strength of frame material must be sufficient to withstand the triple glazing unit weight. A thermally broken aluminum window frame is often used due to its durability, non-corrosiveness and better thermal performance.

The sealant around the perimeter of the unit is the key to preserving the high performance of the triple glazed unit. Its strength also contributes to the overall strength of the window. It’s important to coordinate with the window manufacturer to ensure the sealant compatibility. Considering the variety of options for coatings on different glass surfaces, a number of manufacturers, like Guardian, provide performance data on their website in order to give designers an easy comparison against dual-pane insulating units.
“By offering good natural daylighting through the storefront glazing, we reduced our dependence on overhead lighting in the primary open office area, designed to 0.5 watts/sq. ft., and significantly reduced the overall electricity use,” he recalls. “With a good U-factor and SHGC, we reduced the chance that the space will overheat, which was very important in the naturally cooled space.”

“By supporting the removal of air conditioning from the project, the holistic design—including the glazing—had a positive impact on our energy performance, which was a large part of the LEED Core & Shell Gold certification and AIA COTE Top Ten recognition,” he says.

From Triple to Quadruple Upping the ante, Vitro introduced its first quadsilver-coated glass this past year, registering a 15% increase in the glazing’s ability to block solar heat, as compared to triple glazing. “To create Solarban 90 glass, Vitro Glass scientists supplemented the triple-silver coating technology they developed for Solarban 70XL glass with a fourth ultra-thin layer of silver composed of discontinuous ‘plasmonic’ nanoparticles that are engineered to absorb, rather than reflect or transmit, energy from the solar spectrum,” explains O’Shaughnessy. As light waves cross the glass, this induces electrons within each particle of silver to oscillate collectively, resulting in an oscillatory electric polarization of the particle. By controlling the size and number density of nanoparticles in the fourth layer of silver, this better regulates the glass’ optical and solar control properties.
“As glass technologies continue to develop, a wide variety of options are providing designers multiple ways to bring in light and views.”
Meanwhile, Guardian’s SunGuard IS 20 coating was designed to serve as the No. 4 surface of a double-glazed unit or the No. 6 surface of a tripleglazed unit. “SunGuard IS 20 brings the U-value performance of double-glaze units closer to that of triple-glaze, and improves triple-glaze performance where maximum heat flow resistance is desired,” reports Mays. Because the glazing is not a rough-surfaced pyrolytic hard coat with a hazy appearance, it delivers higher visible light transmission, is smooth to the touch and easy to clean.
QUADRUPLE GLAZING To achieve a 15% increase in blocking solar heat, as compared to triple glazing, Vitro’s quad-silver-coated product capitalizes on nanotechnology. As pictured here, incoming light waves cause electrons within each particle of silver to oscillate collectively, resulting in an oscillatory electric polarization of the particle called a “plasmon.” This fourth ultra-thin layer absorbs, as opposed to reflecting/transmitting energy from the solar spectrum.

With literally hundreds of glass manufacturers and fabricators to choose from, architects have much to gain by selecting a company that offers both high-performance proprietary glass coatings and glass fabrication services. According to Annette Panning, director of marketing and product management with Owatonna, Minn.-based Viracon, designers’ clients specifically benefit from a single-source warranty as project risk is reduced and design flexibility is increased. “From concept through construction, the building owner/developer has access to more than a million product design and performance options supported by a dedicated and experienced team of experts to assist their own design and build teams,” she explains.
Another trend with single-source providers their offering of larger panes of glazing units. For example, Viracon’s manufacturing facility can currently produce triple insulating units up 120 sq. ft., and Guardian Glass recently installed a jumbo coater in one of its plants. Taking advantage of the expertise manufacturers and fabricators have to offer, Myer Harrell AIA, LEED AP BD+C, and principal and director of sustainability for Seattle-based Weber Thompson, advises his brethren to partner with such professionals early, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the system prior to the completion of construction documents. “That will create more certainty and less hassle in shop drawing review and construction administration,” he says.
More to Come As the glass industry remains hard at work developing and tweaking glazing technologies, building teams are poised to benefit from their innovations. “The future of glass is all about adaptability, flexibility and its long-term capability to remain beautiful, but tunable to the environment,” concludes Mays.

TECTONICS OF TRANSPARENCY Challenging the glass construction industry’s generic manufacturing of large flat sheets, Cristina Parreño, architect and lecturer, School of Architecture and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, encourages architects to break out beyond glass’ limited role as a non-structural infill with prototype designs, as displayed in her “Tectonics of Transparency” exhibits.

Breaking Out of a Planar State In a quest to challenge the glass construction industry’s generic manufacturing of large flat sheets, Cristina Parreño, architect and lecturer, School of Architecture and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, created “Tectonics of Transparency,” an ongoing prototype of the glass medium.
The prototype aims to study the relationship between formal design, spatial perception, structural efficiency and systems of fabrication.
Inspiring architects to break out of the limited role which glass has traditionally played as a non-structural infill, Parreño’s designs explore a number of properties including geometry, perception and light. As pictured left in Parreño’s “The Wall,” the viewer’s experiential view changes based upon angle and position. “The myriad of apertures of the screen subtly change shape as we perceive them from different angles,” she explains. Attempting to break glass out of its planar state, the Spanish-born architect explores glass’ compressive strength, and tactile and visual effects. “Tectonics of Transparency aims to study the relationship between formal design, spatial perception, structural efficiency and systems of fabrication, introducing the variant of the glass medium that will contribute by offering a completely new set of parameters thus requiring new means and method of aggregation, joinery and stabilization,” she explains.

While Parreño’s graceful, eye-opening demonstrations are inspiring, these prototypes are challenged by glass’ fragility in the fabrication process, which only supports small tolerances in assembly. To address this, she joins her glass profiles together with a high-performance bonding agent activated by a UV light. While the process enables thin, transparent panes with optimized visibility, and visual and structural capacities, the labor intensive construction process is currently an economic challenge for glass manufacturers to support. As part of her ongoing research, Parreño’s plans to experiment with moving glass beyond the curtainwall. Abundant daylight with satisfying views to the out-of-doors, are clearly two of the topmost features architects choose to work into today’s building designs. Unfortunately, it’s a rare bird to have a building’s electric lighting scheme blend optimally with said natural light plan, thereby compromising not only energy savings, but the quality of light.
In the quest to optimize daylighting with electric lighting design, it’s important to recognize daylight as a dynamic light source, subject to changes in weather, location and time of year. Its variable nature, according to Craig Casey, senior building science engineer, Lutron Electronics Co., Coopersburg, Pa., can also create dramatic differences in the distribution, quality and quantity of light within a room or space.
To begin, Gregg D. Ander, FAIA, managing director, Gregg D. Ander, LLC, San Francisco, says designers must pay careful attention to fixture lay-out and controls integration. Lighting controls, particularly, must be well thought out to be effective.

For example, daylight sensors typically shut off perimeter lighting when lighting levels reach 25 footcandles. But, if the lighting controller is a stepped dimming system, or a simple “on-off ” system, changes will be abrupt.
With a closed-loop, the photosensor is exposed to both daylight and electric light in the room, and the sensing of the electric light forms a feedback loop to compensate for and balance out the lighting level.
“The solution is the use of more expensive continuously dimming controls to achieve a more uniform lighting level,” says Philip Luo, AIA, LEED AP, and a principal with Shah Kawasaki Architects, Oakland, Calif.
For both sensor types, he notes, challenges to successfully achieving this balance is sensor placement and type of sensor itself. “The overall design of the space—including furniture layout, color/ shading, window orientation relative to the sun, window shading/ tinting, etc.—all must be considered to design an optimally functioning system.”
To ensure such a system works seamlessly, photosensors must not only be properly located, they must be exactingly specifi ed. This begins with determining whether the system should be an open or closed loop. While the former measures the natural light level and adjusts electric lighting accordingly, the latter gauges both the natural and artificial components of light in the space. “Open-loop systems are really best to simply turn lights off when daylight levels reach a set level,” explains Paul Kennedy, general manager, Philips Lighting, Cambridge, Mass. “The drawback is that it can’t compensate for any changes between the inside electric light levels and the daylight light levels.”

Offering some advice here, Dane R. Sanders, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, and a principal with Clanton & Assocs., Boulder, Colo., suggests clearly outlining and communicating the lighting controls design intent along with a sequence of operations, which will help determine which control system is best suited for a project. Because daylight sensor locations influence how effective the ambient lighting control zones respond to different daylight conditions, and sensor response varies significantly from one manufacturer to another, Sanders states coordinating with the manufacturer on recommended locations is essential. For instance, to ensure indirect lighting does not interfere with the daylight sen-

70% up/30% down sors, renderings and lighting calculations on the ceiling plane may be required. For example, Sanders explains that building in smooth and slow dimming transitions, as well as dead-band periods, can keep the lights from fluctuating too often and annoying occupants. “The dimming rate and dead-band should be pre-programmed by the manufacturer, but should also be adjustable to adapt to client specific needs,” he says.
Furthermore, Sanders says programming and lighting control system commissioning should be performed both during the day, and night, to ensure intended light levels are achieved under both conditions.

OVER THE PAST CENTURY, THE GEODESIC DOME HAS EVOLVED FROM ITS ORIGINAL USE AS A PLANETARIUM TO A TOURIST-ATTRACTING PAVILION FOR EXHIBITS, to specialty buildings for events, to the most energy, material and space-efficient housing for dome dwellers all over the world. Covered with copper-painted metal shingles, the angled roof and dormers of this building make it a standout. A noteworthy design that deserves a noteworthy finish. For this home, Durapon 70 was the top choice. Chosen for its flexibility, durability and long-term performance, Dura Coat’s colorfast, cool pigments deflect UV rays to retain color and gloss. The tough surface of the premium coating resists installation scratching, scuffing, marring, staining and transit abrasion. A primary choice for galvalume, hot-dipped galvanized and aluminum substrate, when Durapon 70 is paired with Dura Coat’s thick-film primer for coastal and heavy industrial environments, the result is a top-of-the-line coil coating. Under/Over Lighting Another issue many designers struggle with is achieving optimal balance between electric lighting and daylighting without underor over-lighting the space. How the system reacts to changes, is one of the most important factors to consider, says Kennedy. On one hand, he notes, the system should react quickly to sun/overcast, time of day, etc.—but it also needs to buffer the control system to prevent the lights from constantly increasing and decreasing for each passing cloud. Meanwhile, Casey recommends designing the electrical lighting for what’s known as the “nighttime condition,” in order to avoid under lighting. This means specifying fixtures with dimming timers to avert the over-lighting issue.
Another best practice is to establish pre-set light levels based upon the activity in the room. For example, Luo notes most settings for A/V presentations is 10 footcandles (FC); discussion areas are set at 25 FC to 30 FC; and areas where test taking or writing occur at 50 FC. For their design of the Wheeler Active Learning Classroom at the University of California, Berkeley, Luo reports they placed fixtures in two zones that could be dimmed independently to provide uniform levels of lighting for the programmed activity.

“Lighting systems must be designed for maintained light levels, not initial light levels. So high-end trim lowers the light output of a new lighting system to save energy and meet current requirements,” he says. This way, he adds, a daylight responsive dimming system can then maintain the target illuminance by dimming the electric lighting in response to available daylight. For the greatest flexibility, Casey advises the addition of multiple zones of daylight control, via a digital system, in order to make grouping easier.
NOT ALL ARE EQUAL Two control zones depict ample daylight contribution and a uncontrolled zone with minimal daylight. As daylight contribution increases, sensors automatically and gradually reduce electric light output.

BMS Integration Once the design was established, Luo says, the electrical engineers could select the appropriate lighting controller and optimally locate the sensor. Following installation, the system was commissioned to tune and program the controller to meet design criteria. This, of course, begs the question as to whether lighting should be integrated into a building’s automation system. This is typically achieved through ASHRAE’s BACnet protocol, which is the most common interface used for controlling HVAC. Casey says yes, and recommends specifying a system that has an integration protocol for all of the information required by the BMS. “It’s also best practice to work with companies that are open to natively providing the important data points such as light level, shade position, occupancy.”
LIGHT WELLS Emerging from an integrated design charrette mocking up building massing variations for the Austin’s New Central Library in Texas, Lake Flato and Clanton & Associates decided to create a large light well to support narrow floor plates.
Daylighting guru Jim Benya, P.E., FIES, FIALD, and principal illuminating engineer and lighting designer, Benya Burnett Consultancy, Davis, Calif., disagrees. “Daylight sensing takes into account what’s going on in that space. I believe in separating the two—the lighting controls system and the BMS—and having them communicate with each other.” Sanders takes the middle ground, directing teams to specify the data points that are to be shared, and then determine if the building schedule will be controlled entirely by the BMS; if so, then decide whether the HVAC will respond to the occupancy sensors from the lighting system.

DOUBLING DOWN ON DAYLIGHT The design of the new courthouse by SOM maximizes daylighting by locating major spaces, like courtrooms, at the building perimeter. In addition, each floor is organized around an open central volume whose monolithic skylight delivers daylight into the heart of the building, as well as providing courtrooms with a second source of natural light.

Best Practices In terms of overall project management, Sanders recommends communicating the design intent early. “Coordination among the design team and client is critical to understanding the client’s needs and setting expectations of the control system design intent and operation,” he explains. This includes involving the client’s facilities group and IT depart-

ment in the control system design and selection, as early as possible, to build buy-in. “Programmatic decisions should be made with the whole team— not bringing someone in halfway through the project to solve a problem,” agrees Benya. Another best practice, suggests Sanders, is asking manufacturers to set up demonstrations of a few potential control systems in order
to educate those who will be involved in maintenance and operations. Kennedy also recommends clearly defining what the design is intending to optimize and accomplish—i.e., comfort, uniform lighting, uniform color temperature, energy savings, etc.—before specifying anything. “The better you understand and define the expected operation, the more certain you can be the chosen equip-
ment will meet expectations,” echoes Casey. Raising another important point, Casey notes shades, lighting and integration are all found in different locations within the design specification, so to guarantee all the contractors understand how these systems are intended to work together, he advises aligning each section to the desired integration.
To support this task, Casey recommends taking advantage of readily available tools such as Lutron’s Performance Shading Adviser (performanceshadingadvisor.com). Such tools can help architects understand the impact of automated shading systems on daylight, view and glare. Another tool Shah Kawasaki Architects recommends, is Dial’s free Dialux software,

MODELING WORKS At Wheeler Hall, at the University of California, Berkeley, daylight and artificial light modeling and analysis was used to confirm the daylit zones along the perimeter of the building.
The model shows half the room can achieve 25 footcandles of illumination from daylight for most of the day. This allowed sensors to be placed to turn off electric lights at the perimeter.

which can be used to determine how much illumination daylighting would provide throughout the day and year. Software is unquestionably a valuable resource, but he also recommends architects get their hands dirty, so to speak, and construct mock-ups. up building massing variations, using foam core building blocks, in an integrated design charrette for the New Austin Central Library in Texas. “A goal was to keep floor plates narrow— 60 ft. at most. This led to the design teams to create a large light well at the center of the building,” relates Sanders.
In general, Sanders points out daylight modeling and glare metrics don’t adequately represent the experience of glare, so mock-ups are essential for evaluating glare control. “Even simple mock-ups and measurements of different shading material options and surface finishes are very useful,” he says.
Sharing some additional best practices, Sanders advises designers should: Provide daylight modeling results to the lighting and controls designers and engineers to best determine lighting zoning and sensor placement.

Communicate with the lighting controls manufacturer to ensure they understand the controls design intent and sequence of operations, and the design team understands the actual capabilities and limitations of the lighting control system.

“There are so many lighting control systems, and they each have their advantages, disadvantages and quirks,” he adds.

Color-Tuning Tips
SIDEBAR
Early Tuning Cases Positive The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) recently conducted a trial installation of tunablewhite LED lighting at the ACC Care Center in Sacramento, Calif., and invited the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s GATEWAY program to document the performance of the systems. Among the primary goals identified by SMUD and ACC were to learn more about how tunable-white lighting affects the sleep patterns, nighttime safety and other behaviors of the residents; and to better equip the staff to provide excellent care by improving the lighting quality (e.g., reduced glare, better controllability) relative to the incumbent system. At the time of specification, there were very few tunable-spectrum luminaires available that were suitable for replacing the fluorescent systems. Several different tunable systems were chosen and installed in one corridor, two resident rooms, the nurse station, the common room and the administrator’s office. ACC staff documented a number of important health-related benefits that may have been attributable, at least, in part, to the changes. For example, among the three residents studied, agitated behaviors, such as yelling and crying, decreased. In addition, psychotropic and sleep medications were significantly reduced for one of the residents. In the corridor, patient falls decreased, and what’s more, it was reported that residents of other corridors were now “hanging out” in the LED corridor. That said, DOE found that contractors aren’t yet familiar with tunable systems and controls, and that finding the proper balance of automatic vs. manual tuning of the lighting spectrum and intensity is challenging, and that educating residents and staff is essential. Despite the small size of the pilot study, the ACC plans to incorporate many of the lighting solutions and strategies as best practices for future renovations and expansion.
If color-tuning is desired, this will add another layer of complexity to the lighting control system. “Automated color shifting algorithms should be provided by the lighting control system and previously tested with the luminaires being used,” suggests Sanders. Ideally, the lighting should both respond to changes in daylight lumens/intensity and match the change in the daylight color temperature, says Kennedy. “Here, the control

system would need to react in two dimensions, e.g., adding a second channel of control, developing a second algorithm and using a sensor that measured the contribution of both daylight lumens and daylight color temperature,” he explains.

color control to run in the background, possibly via time clock, while daylighting can continuously dim the electric lighting,” he says. However, a system that provides separate inputs of warm versus cool LEDs is more complex, and prone to inconsistencies. Similarly, if multiple luminaire types are used, testing and tuning color matching between luminaires is more difficult.
The S18 is one of 11 collections incorporating the two-source technology.

End Game Putting things into perspective, Benya points out that while daylighting is free, the cost of daylighting isn’t. Of course, designs can certainly capitalize on this natural resource, but the extent to which this can occur within a building is dependent on how well the project team and daylighting and lighting systems integrate together. Hopefully, this will not impinge upon the designer’s intent, however, Benya cautions, “good lighting quality is always a battle and sometimes conflicts with design trends.”
All collections, including the wall mount HP2, are dimmable 1%-100%.

The new University of Iowa Visual Arts Building, by Steven Holl Architects, includes a notable feature: 20-ft.-tall curved channel glass walls that set the table for daylighting. The firm selected the threedimensional, U-shaped glass from Bendheim, for its unmatched ability to create seamless curved walls of seemingly impossible spans, defying the norms of traditional glass architecture. The lightdiffusing channel glass walls bring high-quality, filtered natural light to
the studios and openloft spaces within, creating a bright and productive environment where students and instructors can mingle and work. The concave glazed openings are carved into the rectilinear building form, creating multiple “centers of light.” The undulating glass walls break up otherwise flat expanses, and draw the eye to explore and connect. The unique geometry of the U-shaped channels makes the glass self-supporting, allow-
ing it to span much greater distances than the architect could feasibly achieve with flat glass. Installed vertically—as in the Visual Arts Building—the glass can span heights up to 23 ft. and limitless lengths, while requiring minimal metal framing. The surface texture of the glass channels and the encapsulated translucent thermal insulation evenly diffuse light, acting as built-in glare control devices. Even the brightest direct sunlight is morphed into ideal, soft daylight, provid-
ing students greater comfort and flexibility within the space. In addition to the impressive glare reduction and a high Visible Light Transmission (VLT) of approximately 40%, the insulated channel glass walls offer improved thermal performance, achieving a U-value of 0.24.

INTELLIGENT DAYLIGHTING Designers at San Jose, Calif.-based Aedis Architects knew the replacement skylight they specified for the gym at San Benito High School in Hollister, Calif., needed to aid illumination for a range of applications throughout the school day—the multipurpose space also serves as a lunch room and assembly space. The IntelaSun skylight met this requirement, as it features internal louvers that can be opened and closed to vary light transmittance from 66% down to 3%, using automated time clocks or wall-mounted controls. Demanding—or Damning—Details
ZOLA Thermo Alu75 zolawindows.com
A microcosm of the art and science that goes into designing a building, windows represent everything that can go well, or bad, on a job. Reading about the windows to the right, and throughout this section, it’s a clear indicator to me, that we are not meant to be inside all day. However, providing natural light and views while maintaining a high-performance envelope requires precision on every front for an application to succeed. Window failures may cause inefficiency and discomfort— even danger, as visitors to the LEGO Brick-by-Brick engineering exhibit saw a LEGO-style animation of the great window debacle at the John Hancock
Windows and cladding demand exacting details. Engineering, assembly, installation and glass selection must align perfectly for envelopes to meet efficiency goals. Tower in Boston. There 10,000 windows fell and their replacement nearly doubled the construction budget. Regardless of a project’s age or size, optimal envelope performance is key to any building success, be it from an energy, comfort, performance or beauty perspective. What’s more, operability and hardware make windows functional and more appealing to occupants—at least those in passive or naturally ventilated buildings. In the same vein, exterior cladding products are just as critical, and therefore must exhibit similar versatility and ease-of-installation—and that’s not even mentioning aesthetics improvements, which cab boost branding opportunities with expanded color palettes, unique textures, or even indestructible wood looks. From skyscraper to strip mall, this synergy of cladding and windows offer opportunities for increasingly efficient, expressive façades; so take note of the on-trend hardware, unique factory finishes and Passive House performance standards that deliver on details demanded by today’s architecture.

The flax content scatters white flecks across the surface of the fabric for a natural heathered effect. The fabric also harnesses flax’s natural ability to meet the higher flammability standards without chemical treatment. Circle 380

IT’S A RACQUET London’s prestigious Hurlingham Club engaged David Morley Architects to design its new Racquet Centre to house four tennis courts and four squash courts. The firm’s plan called for a suspended-steel roof structure with structural wood infill that also offered sound absorption to minimize the echoing of all those bouncing balls—and the structure needed to support a green sedum roof across its sloped profile. Kerto LVL laminated veneer lumber met all these needs, with Kerto Sonans panels backed by acoustic insulation providing the desired acoustic performance. Circle 364

Acrovyn® Wall Panels Make Installation Easy and Stunning Designed in Italy, Saga pendants complement the Baldour system; available in square or round profiles with three different optics.

Within a four month time frame, the United States Department of Energy Forrestal Building Collaboration Center reset the standard for a government work space with the revitalized Acrovyn Wall Panel System featuring custom shaped panels that transformed a nontraditional working lounge without compromising durability or design. The design team had to meet specific requirements while using the lounge’s four walls to make a major impact. The space required the wall materials to be easily maintained, durable and removable.
Trespa Pura NFC in Wine Red adds bold style to homes and light commercial buildings. Trespa Pura NFC Uni Colors complement the Wood Decors collection.
EASY INTEGRATION
The team selected one wall as a focal point for the design, installing Acrovyn Wall Panels with a Chameleon™ Sunlit Maple woodgrain pattern that was a perfect match with the new lounge furniture. The wall, spanning 30 feet long and 12 feet tall, features the new demountable Sure Snap™ System for a fast and easy installation that allowed the design team to mock-up and finish the lounge walls in a short period of time.
Saga pendants connect easily into Baldur light-line systems, providing accent lighting to complement Baldur’s general ambient illumination. The pendants can be specified in round or square profiles and are well-suited for highlighting horizontal surfaces in hospitality, office and retail settings. Circle 363
“Working with the new Acrovyn Wall Panels made installation easy and stunning,” said Alexis Peck of Peck Peck & Associates. Incorporating the varied reveal width “saved time by eliminating the contractor’s need to measure two inches from every single panel that was placed. Our approach to the design was to make everything flexible.” Construction Specialties (CS), a leading manufacturer of specialty building products, provides an extensive range of new wall panel design options that can be installed in half the time currently required. All finish types provide the same protection and durability that the industry expects from award-winning Acrovyn Wall Protection.

Clemson University Core Campus Housing and Dining Complex Clemson, S.C. The new 286,000-sq.-ft., 5-building Clemson University Core Campus Housing and Dining Complex brings an interactive living-learning community to students at one of the nation’s top 20 public universities. Architect Bill Fleming, Stevens & Wilkinson, reimagined his alma matter from early master planning to interior build out—an undertaking that spanned over a decade. “The challenge was to incorporate residential, dining facilities and retail dining facilities to co-exist with each other, while separately giving expression to the dining hall, the residential halls, and incorporate the honors hall—giving it all a visual,” said Fleming. Pending LEED Silver classification, the complex opened in the fall of 2016. It features 700 student beds, 1200 seats for dining on three levels, the facility includes flexible, high-quality, open spaces for connectivity to and from central campus buildings, as well as the adjacent football stadium and Calhoun mansion.

Although the café is a large, two-story open room with polished concrete floors, Fleming and his team gave the space a smaller feel by using multiple seating and serving stations, including small cubicles—all accented in orange, one of the Clemson school colors. “We tried to vary the seating arrangements and options—some are booths; others are bar height parsons tables; yet others are standard tables and chairs to allow students multiple seating arrangements in the facility,” said Fleming.

Converging Architectural + Performance Goals
Pterodactyl Office Building, Culver City, Calif. The prehistoric eagle has landed on top of a nearly 20-year-old parking structure in an avant garde L.A. County office complex. Dubbed the “Pterodactyl” by designers at Eric Owen Moss Architects, the advanced design’s success depended on a close collaboration with structural engineering consultants.
If you close one eye and squint just right, you can begin to see how Eric Owen Moss Architect’s “Pterodactyl” office building got its nickname. Its boxy, angled profile also can resemble a “Transformers” toy that’s halfway between its racing-car and monster-robot identities. Regardless of visual metaphor, the building’s seemingly random lines belie cutting-edge architectural

and structural design that, quite possibly, simply wouldn’t have been possible even just 20 years ago. The structure is the latest project in a decades-long effort to transform a former grouping of contiguous warehouses in Culver City, Calif., into a signature multi-use campus. The parking garage that serves as Pterodactyl’s pedestal was purpose-
built in 1998, with the intent of serving as the foundation for a future office building. In fact, 18 of the garage’s steel structural members were left protruding 20 ft. or more above the top parking deck to provide support for a future project. The process of turning early drawings of a composition of nine oddly-angled boxes into a unified design re-
quired close cooperation between Eric Owen Moss architects and structural engineers with the Los Angelesbased firm NAST Enterprises. NAST has worked with Moss on multiple projects within an area referred to on real estate maps as the “Hayden Tract,” and marketed under the moniker of “Conjunctive Points,” by developers Fred and Laurie Samitaur Smith. These
include the “Stealth” and “Beehive” office buildings. “This architect is a very structurally careful designer—he wants to see structure, but he wants it to be clever,” says Hooman Nastarin, founder of NAST Enterprises. “There are places where it’s hidden and places where it’s oversized. We had to do a lot of acrobatics to make it work.”
In the case of Pterodactyl, all those acrobatics have paid off. The final result has racked up a significant collection of awards, from a 2016 American Institute of Architects Honor Award and the Metal Construction Assn.’s 2016 Commercial/Industrial Chairman’s Award, to the 2016 Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Assn.

A LITTLE MORE ON TOP Structural engineer Hooman Nastarin also worked on the team that designed the 1998 parking structure that’s now the base for a two-story office building. “We always knew there would be something on top,” he says, “so we designed it to have enough strength to hold up a couple of stories.” From our vantage point, structural plans evolved, though, as that “something on top” was, first, an office structure that could be assumed to have a fairly uniform weight distribution, and then the more sculptural—and much less uniform—Pterodactyl. “Once it became the Pterodactyl, the load patterns were different, and we had to rearrange our thinking,” Nastarin says. One thing that didn’t change, however, is the original parking structure’s aged appearance, though this isn’t due to lack of oversight. Instead, notes Nastarin, “It was intentional—every single detail was evaluated very carefully.”
The building’s seemingly random lines belie cutting-edge structural design, and wouldn’t have been possible 20 years ago.
DESIGN DETAIL The rendering, courtesy of Rheinzink, shows in detail, how the new office sits atop the old parking structure.
WRAPAROUND DESIGN The front façade’s boxy protrusions appear to have continued through to Pterodactyl’s backside, thanks to unique fabrication and installation of the building’s metal Rheinzink America Flat Lock Tiles. Rather than ending at corners and edges, the tiles wrap around them, adding to the impression of visual continuity from front to back.
BRINGING IT TOGETHER Balancing architectural desires with structural requirements necessitated close collaboration between designers and engineers. Daily briefings and weekly 3- to 4-hour joint work sessions allowed complete communication. Such a complicated building is rare at such a small scale and, initially, NAST’s engineers considered each of the nine “box” structures in the Eric Owen Moss composition individually because of software limitations. “Then software capacity came along that allowed us to bring it all together.”

PERFECT PERCH Above the surrounding low-rise office structures, Pterodactyl’s glassy exposures provide wide-open views in all four directions. Gensler created multiple opportunities for office occupants to treat the parking structure’s top deck as their own backyard patio, including a custom BBQ island. Nastarin notes that sizing the garage-topping building required more than just an understanding of the existing structural capacity. Because the garage serves several other buildings, as well, state and local parking space mandates also had to be considered.
CLADDING Rheinzink www.rheinzink.com Circle 338
More than 19,000 sq. ft. of Rheinzink prePATINA bluegray flat-lock tiles were used as both interior and exterior cladding for the box shapes that penetrate through the Pterodactyl’s front and rear façades.
“The building may not seem that big, and the elements aren’t that large either—but it is definitely fantastic.” —Hooman Nastarin, NAST Enterprises Corp.
OUTSIDE-IN Gensler did the interior design for Pterodactyl’s tenant, the creative agency Omelet. Working with Tangram Studios, the firm’s designers took advantage of the unique interior spaces created by the structure’s boxy composition to carve out program areas, like this conference room.

Transformative Architecture Through their company Samitaur, developers Fred and Laurie Samitaur Smith began buying up abandoned warehouses in a Culver City, Calif., industrial neighborhood called the Hayden Tract in the early 1980s, and soon after began what has become a 20-plus-year relationship with architect Eric Owen Moss. Moss’s creations, which can echo the psychedelic geometry of a Frank Gehry art museum, but at a much smaller scale, have turned the former warehouse district into an architectural mecca called Conjunctive Points. Creative firms have flocked to this revitalized district, which LA Weekly has described as, “a mix between communist-bloc buildings in East Berlin and the set of Blade Runner.” The eight-block area now is home to offices for Fox Studios, Ogilvy Public Relations and Sony. This success has attracted outside developers to the area, including the firm Runyon, which last year opened Platform, a high-profile/high-end mixed-use retail and office development.

PLAIN AND SIMPLE For such a complicated building program, the Eric Owen Moss design team opted for a surprisingly simple—and industrial— palette of interior-finish materials. The concrete surfaces of the parking garage continue into the office building as polishedconcrete flooring, and ceilings are a combination of exposed steel decking and the same metal wall panels used for exterior cladding and roofing. As a formal touch, however, interior walls and partitions are surfaced in plaster, not drywall.
“You couldn’t do anything like this in masonry, wood or any other material , that would have had the same kind of impact.” —Mark Dewalt, AIA, MCA judge and principal with Valerio Dewalt Train Assocs.
GOOD BONES Structural-steel members create much of the interior drama in Moss’s plan. Left exposed and painted in a simple galvanized finish, they let NAST Enterprises’ engineering design take center stage throughout the 16,000-sq.-ft. office space. Glazing is concentrated along the structure’s north façade to both minimize heat gain and maximize penetration of natural light into interior spaces.
The Value of Technology While the Eric Owen Moss design might have begun as a series of paper sketches more than a decade ago, bringing it to construction required a bit more computing power than any No. 2 pencil could provide. The firm’s architects worked with Digital Project/Catia, the 3D modeling software developed by Frank Gehry’s Gehry Technologies, and Rhino, from Robert McNeel & Assocs. NAST Enterprises did much of its design using RISA 3D, from RISA Technologies. “They dedicated a tremendous amount of staff and work hours toward presenting every piece to us,” Nast says, describing the efforts of Moss architects to ensure the structural engineers understood their design intent. The software, along with the iterative working process the two teams developed in concert, enabled the detailed fabrication specifications required to make such a complicated design constructible. “The fabrication would have been too costly, otherwise,” Nast says. “Because creating all those connections and applying every one of the bends would have been impossible.”

The View Is Great from Up Here RJTR architects designed a glass-clad highrise, which was built atop the Mint Museum in Charlotte's Uptown neighborhood. CHALLENGE: Scheduled to open in March 2017, the 43-story Museum Tower is expected to earn LEED Silver certification. The residential high-rise houses 394 one- and two-bedroom apartments, 10 penthouses, a rooftop plaza and the Mint Museum. INFLUENCE: Rule Joy Trammel + Rubio (RJTR) designed the high-rise to complement the contemporary architecture of the existing Mint Museum, and help transform the city into an iconic centerpiece of the Queen City. CRITERIA: Project manager John Morgan, senior associate with RJTR, said glass played an integral role in achieving the project’s design and sustainability goals, and in managing difficult construction challenges presented by the building’s height and lack of exterior accessibility. “We were able to specify a glazing solution that not only worked within our construction constraints, but also met its stringent energy and thermal performance requirements.” SOLUTION: J.E. Berkowitz, LP (JEB) fabricated vision and spandrel Winduo insulating glass units (IGUs) incorporating high-performance, low-e SunGuard SNR 43 on CrystalGray glass and clear glass by Guardian Glass North America. The IGUs also utilized the JEB 3Seal warm-edge spacer, featuring a T-shaped design that improves total wall performance, increases condensation resistance factors, and mitigates against PIB primary seal migration.

Masonry
FOLDED MASONRY The north and south exterior walls were arranged with a running bond pattern, sloped and folded to emphasize the marquee sign.
College Hits High Note with Acoustics
INSIDE THESE WALLS
Mesa Community College’s re-dedication to music and the arts gave birth to a new performing arts center, acoustically fine-tuned with an inner and outer shell of sound-reflective masonry. CHALLENGE: The transformation of the Mesa Community College (MCC) Performing Arts Center began when the college purchased the Harkins Movie Theatre, a vacant movie house built in 1979, to drive student interest in the arts and offer a broad range of musical, dance and theatrical performances. Designed by Jones Studio of Phoenix, the $10.3 million, multi-purpose facility, opened as the MCC Performing Arts Center in 2014. This rebirth and rededication into the arts found the center in need of some acoustic fine-tuning, with inner and outer shells of sound-reflective masonry. INFLUENCE: Serving as the project’s lead designer, Brian Farling, AIA and a Principal at Jones Studio, modeled the center’s architecture on the creative re-purposing of cherished songs and a deep respect of the Sonoran Desert. CRITERIA: Comprising the center’s inner and outer shell the variety of masonry was chosen both for structure and finish. For example, the architectonics of the new performance hall were defined by two separate enclosure shells and a steel frame. The exterior shell is a composition of exposed masonry and raked, unpainted cement stucco over metal stud framing. The second is an interior exposed masonry

enclosure that defines the primary acoustic volume of the hall. Inside, the theater is embedded in acoustical-enhancing masonry. SOLUTION: Oldcastle Architectural’s Echelon brand, Trenwyth Trendstone walls in the Black Canyon color pattern, support symphony, choir, band, jazz, percussion and voice. It also blends into the design scheme with the outer walls’ Architectural CMUs in Black Integral Color and Standard Gray.
The sound chamber was also designed by Farling so that its Echelon Trendstone ground-face masonry units would strategically bump from the walls and serve as an excellent sound reflector. Moving north along the side walls, the “bumps” change from a module of five masonry units wide by five units tall, all the way down to a single 8-ft. × 8-ft. × 16-ft. offsetting in and out to create small bumps. This variation in size allows for the smoother surfaces, or large out croppings, along the front sidewalls to provide stronger early reflections that improve clarity. The smaller bumps along the rear sidewalls offer more diffuse reflections to enhance sound envelopment. The side walls of the hall were also scalloped in a series of convex curves to ensure sound waves splay evenly throughout the audience chamber.

Scenic Views Provide Spiritual Growth A place of quiet refuge, the Hope Church in Richmond, Va., wanted to create interior spaces for its Lodge expansion project that would blend the interior seamlessly with the outdoor environment.
CHALLENGE: The Lodge, an expansion project for the Hope Church in Richmond, Va., is a multipurpose facility with a large gathering space and small break out rooms, designed primarily to support the growth of the church’s teen ministry programs, as well as to facilitate community connections. INFLUENCE: Hope Church is a place of quiet refuge, a place to belong and a place to grow. All of these details were reflected in the design of the building.
100
The style and beauty is apparent in the building of the Lodge. All of these details were reflected in its design.
SOLUTION: St. Cloud Window understood the architects objective, “The 2500 Series windows and terrace doors are a beautiful expression of form matching function. It seemed to us the architect’s intent was to create a thoroughly modern facility with the most advanced performance attributes but expressed in a structure that nestles unobtrusively into the surrounding landscape and welcomes in all that natural beauty,” says Casey Mahon, president, St. Cloud Window.
CRITERIA: The objective was to create interior spaces that blend almost seamlessly with the lush exterior environment. Narrow sightlines offer maximum glass area and minimum frame, providing panoramic views and an abundance of daylight while discreet muntin patterns contribute to the essential character of the architectural design.
The Lodge’s architectural design complements the main structure of Hope Church with a modified post and beam GeoBarns building. GeoBarns founder George Abetti uses a unique architectural engineering configuration which includes a basic post and beam design coupled with open truss diagonal framing to achieve a combination of strength, versatility and beauty. The building process is like an Amish barn raising.

Lighting
Dressing Up Houston A new 40-story residential tower in Houston’s urban core is quickly becoming a local icon, thanks in part to its lighted, curved balconies, creating a wavy, organic appearance up and down the building's gleaming façade. CHALLENGE: Known by its address—2929 Weslayan—the LEED Gold-certified tower includes 254 luxury apartment homes and 12,500 sq. ft. of retail space on the ground floor. Designed by Dallasbased RTKL Assocs., it provides panoramic views from spacious balconies. The balconies are on every floor, and they are curved, creating a wavy, organic appearance up and down the building’s gleaming façade. At night, those curves are accentuated by lines of light, which outline the edges of the balconies and form what appears, from a distance, to be a wave of light.
LIGHT SHOW When entering the underpass the color-changing lighting effects provide a dynamic display. There are also lighting fixtures under benches (below) to provide a soft glow for adjacent walking surfaces, which gives the paths a “romantic” feel in contrast to the underpass lighting.
INFLUENCE: Scott Oldner, of Scott Oldner Lighting Design, says the wave effect was intentional—to complement the glassy “river” that exists between the two columns of 16-ft. balconies. On the one hand, it’s a nod to nature; on the other, Oldner says, “The building was designed by RTKL to look like a woman in a flowing dress, with the balconies embellishing it like lace or the lines of a corset.”
Plexineon can be bent in the field, allowing each curve to be just a tad different—further contributing to the organic feel. SOLUTION: The balconies standout due to iLight Plexineon White 2X 4500 LED fixtures. One thing was certain to Oldner: that Plexineon was the right product for the job. Having already used it in several applications, he appreciates Plexineon’s bright, consistent light. “Consistent color temperature across all the fixtures was crucial. Tape in an extrusion would not have provided that consistency, Oldner says. Color-changing light was considered, but he adds, “The design was classic and costs were tight, so Project: 2929 Weslayan we needed to go with Location: Houston, Texas Architect: RTKL Assocs. a static white look. To add a bit of eye-candy, PRODUCT SPECS: we used the Plexineon Product: iLight Plexineon fixtures to define the White 2X 4500 LEDs upper dress and anothiLight Technologies er color temperature for ilight-tech.com the ‘skirt’ at the bottom.” Circle

Insulated Metal Panels
Team Effort at Practice Facility The Advocate Center, the new practice home to the Chicago Bulls, needed a resilient envelope due to Chicago’s seasonal weather changes. The metal panels chosen feature highperformance thermal efficiency and moisture control.
CHALLENGE: After holding practices in Deerfield, Ill. since 1992, the Chicago Bulls moved into their new Advocate Center practice facility in downtown Chicago in early 2015. Situated directly next door to the United Center—where the Bulls play their home games—the new practice facility eliminated what had previously been a half-hour commute for the players, coaches and team staff. Features such as two full-length basketball courts, media and weight rooms, a miniature barbershop, a hydrotherapy area, a kitchen-dining area and more, make the Advocate Center a first-class facility. INFLUENCE: The building also required a resilient
building envelope due to Chicago’s seasonal weather changes. Exterior metal panels were chosen to provide weather resistance, an essential factor in a place that lives up to its name as the “Windy City.” SOLUTION: Considered by some league officials as a “basketball palace,” HOK, turned to CENTRIA to help build a new state-of-the-art facility. CENTRIA’s Formawall Dimension Series insulated metal panel systems were selected for the construction of the Advocate Center to help create the contemporary façade. Not only do the Dimension Series metal panels lend themselves to a smooth aesthetic, but

Ventilation
Business School Clears the Air Washington University business school in St. Louis clears the air with natural ventilation and a five-story glass atrium as the centerpiece of a recent $65M renovation project. CHALLENGE: Washington University connected two adjoining buildings at the heart of the Olin School of Business with a five-story glass atrium as the centerpiece of a $65M renovation. What had been a shared, open courtyard would now be enclosed space, requiring ventilation and smoke controls. The geometry of the structure would essentially trap smoke in the event of a fire. Maintaining unbroken space and allowing natural light to filter through the atrium and illuminate all five levels below is one of the most welcoming design aspects. INFLUENCE: Passive natural ventilation has been a common European design practice for decades, and highly advanced products have been developed over the years to support this building practice. CRITERIA: The architect and engineers needed to
keep costs down, but still control smoke. The emergency generators needed to power a mechanical smoke evacuation, coupled with large exhaust fans would be expensive, not to mention breaking up the wide-open expanse of the roof. A lower-cost, unobtrusive system was required.
106
ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS
1704APSPS.indd 106
SOLUTION: Because building fire protection code (NFPA92B) allows for natural ventilation as a means of smoke control, a mixed-mode system was proposed, combining natural and mechanical ventilation—though the smoke control system would be entirely passive.
The architects and the structural engineering company worked together to specify architectural-grade ventilation products, including glazed natural ventilators for the roof. A combination of doors, windows, and ventilators work in concert to allow cool air to enter the atrium space at low levels. As warm air rises, it exits through high-level ventilators from Bilco at the top of the space. The large difference in height between the low-level entry of fresh air and the exit of warm air through the atrium creates a large buoyancy effect that draws air through the building. The upward airflow and circulation creates a cooler, more comfortable indoor environment and an ideal path for smoke extraction. As an added benefit, a mixed-mode solution such as the Olin School’s put-in-place can also accommodate the concept of nighttime purging.
A passive natural ventilation system doubling as smoke control was proposed.

Water Savers With an aged national infrastructure in disrepair, now more than ever, it’s time to think about water savings. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, more than 1.7 trillion gallons of treated water are lost to leaks annually, with 16% of treated water never reaching the tap. And, forecasters expect drought to affect 40 to 50 states within the next 10 years, making the saving of water essential. The less water used at the faucet and flushometer leads to less treatment needed downstream, reducing the risk of compromising groundwater. People in the developing world exist on less than three gallons of water per day, yet most Americans use that amount of water in a single flush. Lowering that type of water usage can result in dramatic water savings.

Inefficient trough-style urinals were replaced with 18 Sloan Hybrid Urinals. These were chosen not only because they help save thousands of gallons of fresh water each year, they also helped to earn the LACC the LEED credits needed to obtain a Gold Level rating.

2 REDUCED FLOW EQ faucets with SSPS have a low flow rate of 0.35 GPM to meet sustainability initiatives. The SSPS model features an internal turbine and rechargeable storage device that constantly creates and stores energy generated by the flow of water with no minimum or maximum usage per day.
3 STEALTH MODE Niagara’s Stealth Phantom Toilet features patented Stealth Technology, which involves a combination of air and water working together, the Stealth Phantom toilet offers users a bold, sophisticated toilet that doesn’t sacrifice performance. Also, at 0.8 gallons per flush, Niagara’s WaterSense-labeled Stealth Phantom is the lowest gallon toilet on the market.
4 BOOSTER PACKAGES U.S. Bank Stadium, the largest public works project in Minnesota history, is not just a multipurpose stadium in Minneapolis—it’s a work of art. The $1.1 billion stadium is nearly twice the size as the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings’ old home, and is praised for its commitment to sustainability. A Bell & Gossett Technoforce XLS Booster Package supplies all of the water—2000 GPM—to U.S. Bank Stadium. This includes providing water to the 979 bathroom stalls in the facility. The booster package, which is installed in the stadium’s basement, contains four B&G end suction pumps—three large pumps and one small pump. While only one pump works to send water throughout the building at 1200 GPM at a time, all four pumps were designed to work with the 75HP variable frequency drives (VFDs) installed in the water system to ensure optimal efficiency. A VFD-based booster pump system is advantageous in a high-rise structure because it can maintain more precise control over a wider range of the pumps’ flow rates while reducing energy consumption and pump wear.

Last issue, you may have read our “Weathering the Storm” feature on creating more resilient cladding. A best practice observed in the article was to actively address water penetration. Coatings manufacturer Linetec is taking that pronouncement a step further in its white paper, “Choosing the Right Finish for Coastal Projects.” The manufacturer warns that aluminum cladding components are especially at risk from sea-spray corrosion in coastal areas. Preventative measures, such as 70% PVDF coatings or Class I anodize finishes, can help finished architectural aluminum retain its intended look and long life. The paper can be found at www.linetec.com.

2 STRAIGHTENING THINGS UP Design beauty is more than skin deep in this striking renovation of a 1985 office building in Long Beach, Calif. Architects with Irvine, Calif.-based Ware Malcomb, along with installers from Emerald Metal Products, Signal Hill, Calif., had to address existing conditions that included uneven exterior walls. Tapered channel furring was added to bring the substrate back into alignment—a decision that was aided by the lightweight construction of the Tapered Series Panels specified for the project. Of course, what both building tenants and passers-by observe is simply the many-angled façade designed to appear as though it is fluttering in the wind.

Lighting Lighting fans, be sure to check out our sister publications the next two issues. April’s Architectural SSL is our annual Lightfair companion issue, in which we profile a number of great applications— and products—in context of major categories, including indoor and outdoor decorative luminaires, as well as functional indoor and exterior lighting products, including specialty lighting. Very inspirational stuff. And in the coming issue of May Net Zero Buildings, we’ll be zooming in on task lighting.

1 UP IN THE AIR Looking a bit like a track and field event gone mad, the Javelin chandelier seems to capture its namesake spears in mid-air. Bronze-finished iron and chrome points add a spiky contrast to this fixture, which available in 52-in. and 42-in. sizes, along with singlelight pendant and mirror-backed sconce models.
3 AN AIRY AVIARY Inspired by bicycle spokes, but looking surprisingly like a birdcage, the Spokes 2 pendant fixture provides both direct downlight and indirect ambient lighting, as illumination from the upward-facing LED module passes through the wire housing. The result is a play of light and shadow that varies from every vantage point.

Site Furnishings An overarching goal of architecture—and a case for using all-glass façades—has been about bringing the outdoors in; however, these landscape-related products suggest that it might be just as easy to begin living and working in outdoor spaces as often as possible. “Facilities are beginning to focus on designing more productive outdoor spaces. From corporate facilities to higher education institutions, facility managers are being asked to identify ways to encourage collaboration and social engagement outdoors,” Sabrina Eckert, Legrand product manager. Can’t say I’d disagree. 1

Seating Chairs are a universal archetype for hospitality, so it makes sense that we adore chair competitions that stretch the limits of a functional little sculpture for your backside. The seating options below imply subtly diverse hospitality cues: “sit together, sit and stay awhile, sit back.” But the hidden dimension of this seating is its longevity, which lies in its versatility to adapt, particularly to small spaces, and odd spaces; its lightness, and its ability to suit a variety of design aesthetics. Conscientious of the increasingly transient nature of our lives, plan for seating that can keep up with the quickening pace of being set up, moved and reconfigured somewhere new.

1 REFIT FOR PURPOSE MirroFlex faux mineral fiber ceiling tiles are available in 2-ft. × 2-ft. size for lay-in ceiling applications. Panels are fire retardant, easy to install and can be used in an existing 15/16-in. grid, making them ideal for retrofit applications. With tegular/revealed edges, the panels can drop below the grid, for a unique architectural dimension.
2 LEARNING CURVES Using 1,392-sq.-ft. of Rockfon’s 2-ft. × 6-ft. CurvGrid panels together with the manufacturer’s factorycurved suspension system, the Cushing Middle School in Cushing, Okla., was able to simultaneously create a ribbon-like appearance that masks noise at the school’s open plenum ceiling. The CurvGrid panels meet noise level requirements with a 0.70 NRC. Other Rockfon products used in the space include: CubeGrid and Planostile. All ceiling products were covered in custom color to match the school and its mascot— Tiger Orange.

3 AESTHETICS AND FUNCTION ALL IN ONE Ideal for today’s flexible spaces, where a mix of private and open floor plans share the same space, Armstrong Ceiling’s Total Acoustics panels both absorb unwanted sound and block sound from traveling into adjacent spaces. Now featuring the manufacturer’s WoodWorks and MetalWorks ceiling panels, the Total Acoustics line has more aesthetic options—the sleek sophisticated look of MetalWorks or the warm, rich look of WoodWorks. To make it easier to specify the right ceiling for a space, Total Acoustics panels are rated Good, Better and Best based on their combination of sound absorption, or NRC, and sound blocking, or CAC.

Underlayment As the open office continues to gain ground, many designers are finding it’s also important to start designating “quiet” zones where people can better focus on tasks requiring concentration. Such was the case with SmithGroupJJR in opening their new Chicago offices. By migrating to a more open, easily re-configurable studio, the firm found it could easily accommodate growth up to 41% without adding additional square footage. This is the case because an internal study of the firm’s workings found that at any given time, 30% of employees had no need for a physical desk. Active project areas for impromptu collaboration support this notion, but the quiet zones “ensure va balance,” notes the firm’s office director, Tim Tracey. A good place to start is the floor. 4

A recent workplace study by the General Services Administration found that office noise was one of the top complaints of their employees. The agency plans to divert budget dollars from less impactful systems to address the problem. 1

Totally ‘RAAD’ in LA That is, R&A Architecture and Design or RAAD has gladly adopted the intense vision, laser focus and sunny energy of its newest design studio director, Alex Anamos.
Alex Anamos’ seemingly renewable level of energy for architecture keeps him youthful and optimistic about the profession; at the same time, he recognizes that, now more than ever, architects need to engage with communities, be active in local organizations and get embedded in decision-making bodies. Anamos embodies that action, serving three years on AIA|LA’s Urban Design Committee and now as an elected member to AIA|LA’s board of directors. Anamos studied architecture in LA and was compelled to stay, attracted to the creative energy and the architectural potential presented by the young city, “I fell in love with the large metro area at the center of culture, government and art,” says Anamos, “and the creative energy here is huge.” Despite LA’s creative potential, in recent years, development has become a struggle as vocal neighborhood residents wary of change have become architecture’s toughest critics; specifically, an anti-growth group, that calls itself the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative, has stymied efforts of developers and policy makers striving to provide housing and infrastructure developments at pace with LA’s rapid growth and urbanization. The silver lining in this battle was that it brought all key players to the Urban Design Committee’s

table as allies, says Anamos. “I will admit, a common threat is what it took to mobilize the architectural community and galvanize all those forces.” This wellspring of energy connected people across politics and professions to accomplish responsible neighborhood planning and sustainable development. “A powerful reminder that AIA|LA’s membership cannot act in a vacuum if our expertise is to influence L.A.’s built environment.” In one instance, recalls Anamos, the Metro met resistance from residents as it established denser building codes along transportation routes. It came to realize that glossy renderings of urban planners and design professionals were powerful tools in portraying density in a positive light. Residents related to the renderings and embraced them as a shared vision for the neighborhood’s transformation. The hope, says Anamos, is to keep this kind of momentum and collaboration alive. The ad hoc collaboration has smoothed the path to development for the time being, but Anamos recognizes that even the city’s planning department is too overtasked developing policies that accommodate a booming metropolis to provide platforms for community involvement; therefore, architects remain on call for civic duty.
Project: Doheny Residences Location: West Hollywood, Calif.
The differentiated façade of the Doheny Residences creates a series of terraces, circulation areas, and a unique relationship between public and private spaces.
“We should always believe that great design can solve a host of urban dysfunction, but should shift our thinking to embrace policy making as an equally powerful tool for shaping our city’s next iteration.”
Alex Anamos, AIA, LEED AP, is studio director and senior architect at the Los Angeles-based R&A Architecture and Design Studio.
