BEST PRACTICES IN LIGHTING ›› LED RETROFITS

Is Your LED Retrofit Safe? open and sealed fixtures, and fixtures rated for dry, damp and wet locations. Interior volume of a fixture also plays an important role. Traditional light source is also a factor in the certification process. The UL classification label on the LED retrofit kit will provide information around the appropriate fixture types, lamp types and building areas where the LED Retrofit products can be safely installed.

Installation Hardware

In 1893, electric light technology was put on display at the World’s Fair in Chicago. These lights were installed inside papier-mache buildings, and the area earned the nickname “White City.” A lesser known fact is the lighting caused many of the paper buildings to catch fire. These fires resulted in the creation of Underwriters Laboratories. Now, almost 125 years later, UL provides a safe path for new lighting technologies to be installed into commercial buildings. That path is UL1598C Certification.

UL and LED Retrofit UL1598C certification provides building owners and managers a safety standard when considering LED Retrofit. Certified LED retrofit products are labeled as UL “Classified.” By using the word “classified” UL can distinguish field-installed LED retrofit products from fixtures, which bear the “Listed” mark and LED lamps, which bear the “Recognized” mark.

What Does UL LED Retrofit Certified Mean? Certified LED retrofit kits are truly kits—as they must include the following: LED retrofit drivers, modules and engines. These are the LED components that provide power conversion and light. These come in many shapes and sizes, and are typically designed for specific fixture types. LED retrofit kits are evaluated in the same way as full LED fixtures, providing confidence in the field safety of the LED retrofit.

Installation hardware is also evaluated by UL to ensure that the installer has everything necessary to safely install the LED retrofit kit. Typically this includes wire nuts and 8/32 screws for mounting to the fixture or junction box.

LIGHTING AT THE WORLD’S FAIR In 1893, electric light technology was put on display at the World’s Fair in Chicago. Photograph from “Shepp’s World’s Fair Photographed,” Chicago and Philadelphia 1893, and from “Glimpses of the World’s Fair Through a Camera,” Chicago, 1893.

It is significantly cheaper to retrofit once, than to retrofit poorly once and correct the installation later.

Installation Process The fi nal piece of a UL Certifi ed LED retrofit kit is the installation instructions and process. This provides a certifi ed path for installers to follow, to ensure safe fi eld-installation. These instructions can vary in complexity from manufacturer to manufacturer. Often a retrofit will require going above and beyond UL requirements, by removing the existing lamp-holders and ballasts. In many cases, the existing lamp-holders are yellow and brittle, and no longer suitable to make an electrical connection. They can even crumble. Over time, the heat and radiation effects of Pin-CFL lamps can be highly damaging to lamp holders, and this equipment should not be reused. Ballasts present a different issue. Over the life of a building, ballasts are replaced with a wide variety of replacement parts. It is highly unlikely that 100% of the ballasts in any given fixture type are all exactly the same. Furthermore, LED bulbs that rely on existing ballasts, rarely meet their published wattage, and are only compatible with a handful of ballasts. In most cases, the only way to safely retrofit with LED bulb solutions is to remove both the existing lampholders and the ballasts. It’s significantly cheaper to retrofit right once, than to retrofit poorly once, and then correct the installation later.

CLICK HERE FOR SAFE LED RETROFITS UL certified LED retrofit kits will be labeled with UL Classified mark. The manufacturer can also be looked up on UL’s Certification Database. Visit www.certified.ul.com.

Fixture Types LED retrofit kits are typically designed for specific fixture shapes, sizes and light outputs. UL certification requires that LED retrofit kits meet specific requirements for installation into various fixture types. These requirements typically vary between surface-mounted and recessed fixtures,

BEST PRACTICES IN LIGHTING ›› ART ILLUMINATION

Presenting Art with LED Light The modern era presents art in sober, empty spaces. As a consequence, part of the responsibility of a lighting designer is to capture this approach via lighting, as explained by lighting designer Scott Rosenfeld, who worked on the Color Field Gallery in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. “Our objective when lighting our modern galleries, especially the one dedicated to Color Field paintings, is to help artworks to appear as a natural extension of the white wall. The lighting should subtly ‘pop’ works off the wall without making them look ‘spot lit.’ If the relationship between the wall and the work is perfect, it will appear almost to float on the wall.” Flexibly responding to changing presentations, works of art require different forms of lighting because of their size, but artists, as well as inhouse or external curators, also need to express a variety of desires about how to use light in exhibitions to optimum effect. Furthermore, the repositioning of exhibition walls may demand the spatial rearrangement of luminaires. Hardly any museum, however, has the funds to maintain a wide selection of alternative luminaires for all their spaces. As a result, a flexible infrastructure consisting of tracks, spotlights and interchangeable lenses is initially required to respond appropriately to new exhibits if the exhibition is changed. Tracks are predestined for this purpose because their luminaires can be replaced without effort, and they can also be used in exhibitions for the power supply of exhibits via adapters or for the mechanical suspension of objects. The second level of flexibility is found in easily aligned spotlights that can be adjusted precisely according to the individual artworks—for example with the classic tilt angle of 30 degrees for harmonious modeling with light and shadow, or with a steep light incidence direction that creates dramatic grazing light to emphasize textures with hard shadowing. The third and very decisive level of flexibility is the variability of light distributions, ranging from expressive accenting to the sober appearance of wall washing. Interchangeable Spherolit lenses provide curators with a high degree of design flexibility when selecting a lighting concept as well as in terms of temporary modifications. The lens positioned in front of the spotlight determines the luminaire’s light distribution characteristic by the shape of the Spherolits. The diversity of light distribution patterns ranges from rotationally symmetrical distributions from very narrow with less than 10 degrees to wide flooding in excess of 80 degrees, as well as

14

ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS

1709APONS.indd 14

The curatorial decision for a particular exhibition determines the code of practice for the lighting concept.

axially symmetrical light distributions for oval light cones to asymmetrical for uniform wall washing. On the electronic side, dimmability is an indispensable factor that enables the lighting level to be modified according to the needs of the exhibits—either via the light control system or directly on the spotlight, or via a combination. Despite aiming for maximum flexibility, a sense of consistency in is also mandatory for the quality of light. Color temperature and color rendering should be constant across different product families in order to exclude color variations within associated rooms or when retroactively supplementing the installation with further luminaires. The key lies in a modular luminaire system that can offer design flexibility and safety, and thereby also contributing to the cost efficiency of the technical museum infrastructure. The opulent presentation of art in spaces flooded with light or emphasized with dramatic accenting may be tempting for attracting high numbers of visitors, but this strategy has negative consequences with sensitive exhibits. Irreversible photochemical reactions and effects caused by heat radiation endanger the long-term display of such objects. The most obvious effect is loss of color when high levels of UV radiation cause colors to fade, thus diminishing the impact of an

artwork. Because of the high component of ultraviolet radiation in daylight, the intelligent handling of glazed windows and fenestrated roofs is essential. However, exhibits are also exposed to UV loads from electrical lighting, although modern warm white LEDs’ damage factor is less than low-voltage halogen lamps with UV filters. With the progression from thermal radiators such as halogen lamps to LED technology, conservators gain a further important advantage—the problem of infrared no longer applies because white LEDs no longer emit this radiation, in contrast to their predecessors.

Key Recommendations Ensure flexibility: Exchangeable optics for differing beam angles, dimmability of the light source and flexible light control all guarantee optimum lighting conditions for museums, both now and in the future. Integrate conservational aspects: Dimmable, warm white LED lighting today provides the optimum solution for sensitive artworks. Benefits from efficiency: Economical lighting technology cuts operating overheads to create financial flexibility that enables investments in displays. Work with good visual comfort: Luminaires with good glare control and intelligent luminaire arrangements aid presentations with light.

State of the Industry: Wood As some of the most popular commercially-specified wood species are becoming endangered, manufacturers are leading the way with sustainable alternatives. Up to 80% of the top 10 commercially specified woods are endangered species says design historian and materials’ expert Grace Jeffers during her Global Forestry 101 CEU. Jeffers calls on designers to be aware of their wood sources, and ask more questions of suppliers in order to responsibly specify wood. HEALTH & WELLBEING

Creating Emotive Spaces A collaboration between Gensler and Targetti examines the emotions behind lighting choices. “Designers want the fixture to disappear and lighting to do its thing,” says Gensler’s Global Practice Area Leader of Product Development, Daniel Stromborg. It is with that in mind that Duralamp, a brand of Targetti, tapped Stromborg to help them discover, in a statistically quantifiable fashion, the emotion behind lighting specification for its Durastrip product, a linear LED especially for cove lighting and accent lighting. “We have 47 offices and 32 practice areas and if our projects are not lit correctly, it will not show our work in the best light,” says Stromborg. Charged with finding quantifiable and consistently repeatable results, Stromborg studied hundreds of Gensler architects and designers and projects they created for hospitality, retail and commercial office spaces. Stromborg noted the words— emotional and experiential—that designers used

to describe their projects. After interviewing designers about how they want their spaces to feel, he presented them with 32 channels of lighting. Stromborg recorded their preferences, identifying eleven frequently occurring palettes and project themes such as energetic, calm, focus, urban or Zen. Duralamp reviewed designers lighting preferences and correlated them with several data points, including color temperature, fidelity, gamut, spectral distribution and color rendering index score. Through this exercise, Stromborg and Targetti developed the emotional lighting spectrum of The Emotions Collection, an emerging tool for designers to specify lighting with the certitude of successfully tying a project together with lighting. The next step for the lighting project is to get it into the hands of specifiers via an app- or web-based tool.

“As interior designers and architects, we talk in terms of experience and emotion to our clients. How come we’re not talking about lighting the same way we talk about design?”

PRODUCT DESIGN Gensler’s global Practice Area Leader of Product Design Daniel Stromborg helps inspire design teams to translate Gensler’s voice and vision into tangible products for workplace and lifestyle environments. He was instrumental in the collaboration between Gensler and Targetti.

NeoCon—Contract with a Soft ‘C’ Intrepid AP editors scoured the floor to find what’s fresh at the NeoCon trade show, and what furnishings they found were an earnest examination of a mindful approach to the workplace.

The annual multi-story contract furnishings reveal known as NeoCon was not a continuation of the lighthearted playful themes from last year but an earnest examination of a mindful approach to the workplace. This year saw some crawling back to the office setting, seeking solace in creative hacks such as meditation niches and active seats and desks. Other brands differentiated by designing within the scale of a home office or startup and a few strived to facilitate progressive employers’ efforts to be mindful of restorative conditions in the workplace. This softening of the workplace materialized literally in soft goods, biophilic patterns and the archetype of the home. Consulting firm Terrapin

A showroom of note was Humanscale, consistently ahead of the curve for its mindful approach to product design, it is part of Thrive Global, an initiative to promote an authentically healthier workforce. It hosted New York meditation experts’ MNDFL to lead NeoCon attendees in a morning meditation— suggesting that any investment in dynamic spaces, biophilic design or an active workplace starts with the individual. Retro-Fitting in As these three projects show, adding a new roof to an existing building often requires extra attention. By Chuck Ross, contributing writer

Roofing design and installation is always a complex process, and always a critical element in any new project’s success. It becomes even more of a challenge, however, in a replacement effort, when a number of operational priorities can end up competing with the primary goal of achieving a weather-tight seal. In retrofit

efforts, each job can become a custom, oneoff assignment, as in-place roof accessories, existing aesthetic standards and a need to minimize disruption for occupants all need to factored into both designs and construction schedules. Each of the following three projects has such a story to tell.

“We had a very strict budget; we met that budget and gave them a product that was probably as good as a new roof.”

Project: Nauticus Museum Location: Norfolk, Va. Engineering: Hentz Engineering

ATOP THE NAUTICUS Located on an exposed point in Norfolk Harbor, the Nauticus Museum needed a roof that could withstand hurricaneforce winds. The new membrane and adhesive combination is designed to remain intact in wind speeds up to 120 mph. Roofedge metal coping had to be carefully removed and cleaned for reuse, as part of the roof-restoration project. The coping was color matched to the building’s metal cladding, and had faded in line with the façade material.

Preventing Uplifting Experiences The Nauticus Museum in Norfolk, Va., is sited on Norfolk Harbor, given its purpose to educate visitors on the many aspects of maritime commerce. It also acts as a gateway to a tourist destination, the restored Battleship Wisconsin. But with this location comes a significant wind threat—and a whole lot of rain. Built in 1994, the building began experiencing leaks and roof deterioration just a decade later, so in 2004 the original asphalt built-up system was topped with a polyester fabric-reinforced coating. Eleven years after that, the coating system had begun delaminating, and portions of the reinforcing fabric began tearing loose during the area’s frequent high winds.

30

ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS

1709APTRL3.indd 30

Project leaders from Virginia Beach, Va.-based Hentz Engineering faced challenges beyond handling the potential impacts of high winds and driving range when planning the museum’s roof replacement. Budget was a concern for the client, the nonprofit Nauticus Foundation, but meeting that budget was complicated by the many profiles of the roof.

Additionally, the client had a couple aesthetic concerns. First, because some of the roof’s 11 sections—which range from 67 ft. to 104 ft. above grade—slope toward the street side entrance, any new membrane needed to color-match the museum’s metal cladding. Similarly, the existing sheet metal coping needed to be carefully removed for reuse.

“The building is built to simulate the deck of a ship, and it has many different levels to it,” said Steve Hentz, president of Hentz Engineering, the firm responsible for the new roof’s design. “There were a lot of small roof sections that were pretty high up and difficult to work around.”

“If we changed that, it would stick out like a sore thumb—even if we got the exact same color, it wouldn’t have matched,” due to fading, Hentz says. “The roofing contractor ended up taking all the pieces off, then labeling and cleaning them. It actually went back pretty easily—we didn’t have replace anything. That definitely slowed up the process, but it probably saved money in the long run.”

After wind-uplift and moisture testing, Hentz personnel determined they could peel back the failing 2004 coating and use the original built-up asphalt membrane as a base substrate. A new membrane system—Carlisle Syntec’s 115-mil FleeceBack

KEE HP membrane, which was fully adhered by the company’s FAST Adhesive— was then attached over the original roof, providing protection in winds up to 120 mph. The new membrane color matches the building’s cladding exactly.

Project: Groton Schoolhouse Location: Groton, Mass.

Mahan Slate Roofing Co. mahanslate.com Circle 421

GILDED BELFRY The extensive scaffolding used to reach the top of the Groton Schoolhouse belfry required engineering approval because of its height. It was covered by a scrim during winter months to protect workers and materials from the cold. Mahan Slate craftsmen cut into the dormers so lighting fixtures could be recessed into a protective copper pan. The school’s historian objected to how the fixtures had detracted from the building’s historic appearance as they had been mounted previously. The finished roof features a gilded belfry. Thanks to slate’s exceptional durability, it could be another century before repairs are needed again.

Cuts were made into the dormers so lighting fixtures could be recessed into a copper pan.

Restoring History The prestigious Groton School in Groton, Mass., was founded in 1884, and tradition has remained a mainstay of the campus, even as it has modernized and grown to serve a mix of 380 boarding and day students. So, when making plans to expand the signature schoolhouse structure, school administrators wanted to make sure the building’s Neoclassical flourishes were maintained, even as an addition integrated the latest technologies for topnotch STEM education. Center to this effort was a restoration to the original slate roof and its signature belfry, which was showing significant signs of age. Critical to the brief developed by roofing consultants from North Conway, N.H.-based Fulmer Assocs.

32

for the copper and slate specialists from Mahan Slate Roofing of Agawam, Mass., was that the existing copper dormers and bell tower were to be reproduced down to the tightest curve. “Every piece was made exactly the same,” says John Mahan, Mahan Slate Roofing’s vice president. “We matched every profile exactly.” The seven-month project began with a significant scaffolding effort—the top of the bell tower reached to 130 ft., so the staging required engineering approval. The scaffolding also was fully wrapped to both contain roof debris and help provide a climate-controlled atmosphere for Mahan’s workers, as work continued through the New England winter.

The slate that had topped the structure since its initial construction needed to be completely replaced. “Slate has a 100- to 125-year service life, and then it will start cracking here and there,” Mahan says, noting that such an old roof’s accessories also can play a part in failure. “A lot of the time, the slate, itself, doesn’t fail—a lot of the time it’s the flashing details.” The roof’s original wood decking, however, was still in reasonably good shape, only requiring some patching, here and there. That substrate was topped by an ice and water barrier and tar paper before new 18-in. × 10-in. Vermont green slate brought the new roof to life. The copper dormers, however, took a bit more care,

and a lot of artisanship back in Mahan Slate’s workshop. There, copper workers made templates of the dormers’ salvaged profiles and, with oversight from Groton’s school historian, used a manual metal-bending brake to recreate the original appearance. “It takes a little bit to figure out the bends and rolls,” Mahan says, adding that

some of the 6-ft. sections topping the belfry took up to a month to produce. The company also created a new solution for the previously exposed light fixtures used to illuminate the belfry—a couple copper pans were recessed below the roofline as housings to create a cleaner and more historically accurate appearance from the ground.

A Roof You Can Harvest Harvard University has been busily greening up its Cambridge, Mass.-campus over the last few years, and one of the latest efforts has involved retrofitting the roofs of two of its business school buildings. One of the roofs featured sedum-based plantings, but these failed to provide the visual punch the school’s dean was looking for. This new installation certainly addresses aesthetics, with wildflowers planted in a pattern inspired by the nearby Charles River. It is also helping to supply the dining hall’s kitchen—last fall, the school harvested 400 lbs. of daikon radishes grown on the roof.

The project was led by Recover Green Roofs of Somerville, Mass., based on a new type of growing media from Chicago-based Omni Ecosystems called Infinity Media. The extremely lightweight mix is a proprietary combination of perlite, compost and a microbial solution that was developed to mimic the growing conditions of a forest floor. Planning the project took about a year, according to Recover Green Roofs project manager, Richie Harvey, with Omni Ecosystems doing much of the planting layout. It was the first New England installation for Omni, which has garnered a lot of press

in its hometown for its recent work on the roof of the headquarters for the cutting-edge architecture firm of Studio Gang. There, a rooftop planting of winter wheat was harvested, milled and turned into bread by a local bakery. “It is not like any other system, in terms of weight and what it’s able to grow,” Harvey says, comparing Omni’s media to what might more traditionally be used with such an installation. “A typical intensive system is 6-in. to 12-in. deep,” but with the new technology, he says, dogwoods can be planted in as little as 3 in. of Omni’s Infinity Media.

Of course, with the intensive rooting of native wildflowers comes the need for a secure barrier to protect against intrusion. The base protection layer for this project is Sika-Sarnafil’s Sarnafil G410 membrane—in fact, this project won that company’s 2016 project of the year in the waterproofing category. According to Harvey, PVCbased membranes like the Sarnafil offer built-in rootbarrier capabilities. A year after the project’s successful installation—and harvest—Harvey remains enthusiastic about both the Omni Ecosystem installation, which he calls one of the smoothest jobs he’s worked.

MORE PLANTING, LIGHTER WEIGHT The 11,000-sq.-ft. installation atop two Harvard Business School buildings is the first in the northeast to incorporate Omni Ecosystem’s Infinity Media, a new green-roof growing medium that allows for intensive planting at a much lighter weight. Recover Green Roofs worked with Omni Ecosystems on the roofs’ planting layout, which is designed to resemble the flow of the Charles River.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH SmithGroupJJR specified Cradle-toCradle-certified Mosa floor and wall tiles to lend a striking aesthetic to the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law.

by Barbara Horwitz-Bennett, contributing writer

As higher education learning spaces continue to evolve from traditional classrooms to café/hotel lobby-like settings, architects are choosing from more trendy products and materials.

Driven by increased competition to attract and retain the best and brightest, a trend of “student consumerism” is driving university design. “Slowly fading are harshly lit spaces with firm furniture,” says Bill Ash, AIA LEED AP, Design Principal, Higher Education, SmithGroupJJR, Detroit. In their stead, he adds, are “a rich variety of color and materials in warm tones that are a mix of synthetic and natural.” This includes reclaimed wood, as well as other hard and soft surfaces. The big issue, he says, is to address group and individual spaces and provide attention to light and detail. Collaborative environmental learning trends is another major driver, therefore, having tools on hand to record great ideas is also key. Therefore, technology-equipped furniture zones, and access to power and display monitors are essential to support student collaboration. What’s more, such settings are not only showing up in student lounges, lobbies and study areas,

38

but in the classrooms, themselves, in the form of flexible furniture, often with high-tops, lounge chairs, group and smaller solo tables, sofas, benches, even floor cushions. “Flexible furnishings that can be reconfigured to suit the need of the user, as well as writable surfaces that have the ability to capture and share data electronically, are becoming very popular,” says Shawn Gaither, AIA, LEED AP, Senior Assoc., DLR Group, Minneapolis, Minn. In fact, Gaither sees any material that can be purposefully written on, and still be maintainable, as being in demand at the moment. Besides e-textbooks, other electronic trends that continue to grow in popularity, says the architect, are the “gamification” of the classroom, and increased use of simulation or virtual reality technology. “All of these tools are elevating the educational experience for college students on campuses around the world,” adds Gaither.

STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY, STONY BROOK, N.Y. Alucobond aluminum composite material panels in assorted bold colors lend vibrancy to Stony Brook University’s new residence halls at the State University of New York.

PRODUCT SPECS

Popular Products In addition to flexible furniture and writable surfaces, Ozzie Tapia, AIA, LEED BD+C, Assoc., LPA, Irvine, Calif., sees an increase in tubular skylights— as a simple, cost-effective way to bring daylighting into spaces—and unitized or panelized cladding systems as popular trends. Assembled in a shop with a higher level of quality control and oversight, the panels are bolted in place on site, thereby reducing trade coordination and field work. Also on the rise are architectural metal panel wall systems. According to Craig Peterson, AIA, Design Leader, BWBR, Saint Paul, Minn., the industry is delivering dramatic aesthetics with this highly sustainable material in the form of various textures, colors and panel systems, that also deliver vastly improved thermal performance. Another great looking product, which has made leaps in the durability/easy-to-maintain category, are terracotta rainscreen systems, says Tapia. As an added bonus, these systems are versatile enough to be used as wall cladding, screening and even as acoustical treatment, when perforated. The Southern California architect is also a fan of perforated aluminum panels and their versatility, which can be used as exterior cladding, sun shading elements, canopies or guardrails—all in highly

customizable colors, textures and perforation patterns. “The beauty of perforated metal is that it can be tailored to create unbelievably unique, dynamic and enticing environments, while remaining cost efficient,” he says. Not quite as economical, self-tinting glass is also recognized by Tapia as it has great potential to save on energy costs, while maximizing daylighting and views. In student-centric spaces, Ash has noticed that Cradle-to-Cradle-certified Mosa floor and wall tiles are popular as the sustainable material is high visibility and holds up well in high-traffic areas.

Metal Lends a Modern Look Working on a tight budget with limited time constraints, Goshow Architects decided to clad State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook University’s new residence walls with aluminum composite material. “We wanted to build with pre-fabricated elements to beat the clock,” relates F. Eric Goshow, AIA, LEED AP, Partner, Goshow Architects of New York. “Metal panel systems have been a great favorite of ours. They establish a bright and clean look for buildings.” To create architectural interest, Alucobond Plus aluminum composite material in various bold colors was installed on three interconnected buildings of varying heights, totaling 173,000 sq. ft. The contemporary material helps to make these buildings stand out on the 1000-acre campus, most of which was built in the 1960s and ’70s. “We convinced the university that they couldn’t build traditionally; bricks are labor-intensive and not cost-effective,” says Goshow. “We also wanted to focus on building for the 21st century.”

JOHNSON & WALES UNIVERSITY, PROVIDENCE, R.I. BREWLAB Wood laminates, as shown here in the brew lab at Johnson & Wales’ Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence, combine aesthetics and durability. FROSH DINING ROOM Tsoi/Kobus & Assocs. specified Marca Corona, Resene Colorwood in brown and a Wilsonart wood laminate for the Center’s freshman dining room.

On the subject of high-traffic areas, Nicholas Koulbanis, higher education sector leader with Tsoi/Kobus & Assocs., Boston, likes digitally printed metal and laminates, as well as wood-embossed porcelain tiles, which offer varied aesthetics while meeting the stringent durability needs of educational environments.

As a great way to reinforce school branding, bolder and a larger variety of color palettes are also showing up in today’s higher education spaces. Whereas exterior applications were traditionally more limited in color choices, newer engineered materials are now enabling longer-term finishes and a variety of color options.

Koulbanis has also observed a rise in glass partitions. Coupled with graphic films, this pairing lends privacy for facility offices, for example, while still allowing natural light to pass through the floor plate. Glass partitions in study areas and classrooms also help to create a buzz as students can freely witness the activities taking place in these spaces. Looking ahead, he anticipates that interest in operable walls and technology-based furniture will continue to grow. “Providing the instructor with the ability to reconfigure spaces to serve different learning modalities will allow schools to greatly increase the utilization of these highly sought-after high-tech spaces,” reports Koulbanis.

And while exterior materials tend to remain more constant, interior design trends cycle at a faster rate. Responding to student interest in viewing their institutions as progressive, contemporary and state of the art, Peterson sees architects looking toward trendy materials and colors for these interior spaces.

Outdoor Classrooms

Whether it’s in conjunction with a building project, part of a campus master plan or an individual landscape architecture project, designers are actively involved in creating these important spaces. “The outdoor space then contributes to the overall campus look and feel,” adds Peterson, “extends the experience within the buildings into the landscape, enhances movement and connections through the campus, and defines spaces that support quiet personal time or encourage energized moments of collaboration or socializing, enriching the culture and life of institutions.” By offering a variety of indoor and outdoor areas, students are afforded a healthy palette of environments for studying, collaborating, interaction and socializing. “As we plan and design campuses, we must look at buildings and landscapes as an ecosystem of learning spaces and look at every opportunity for increased social collaboration by organizing social spaces where students and faculty will informally

cross paths before and after classes, increasing the exchange of ideas,” explains Koulbanis. By showcasing hands-on building and learning activities—for example, science labs and innovation spaces—younger students can also witness the excitement and creative activities taking place amongst the older students in these “maker” environments. Some product solutions helping to enable this include simple devices like folding or roll-up garage doors and moveable partitions.

Another noteworthy trend in today’s higher education institutions is an increased utilization of outdoor spaces. “More and more, institutions are recognizing the intangible value of outdoor space, both subjectively and objectively, from the standpoint of campus image and usable space,” observes Peterson.

which often involves decentralizing the learning environment and moving the professor off of the stage and into the room, allowing instruction to be more conversational, personal and collegial. “Students today are more than just passive audiences to their education. They want hands-on experiences, and see education as a collaboration between themselves and their professors,” states Peterson. In fact, adds Ash, the evolving expectation is that learning environments and pedagogies better prepare students for life directly after school. “Much of the workforce is no longer looking for isolated genius, but creative collaboration—individuals who are ‘T-shaped,’ having both a deep

understanding of their own discipline, as well as the ability to empathize and communicate widely across many disciplines.” In order to have a shot at helping to solve real-world problems, current thinking is that critical thought and creativity is best born out of collaborative environments. “Using collaborative products such as mobile cart displays, technology enriched furniture, and ample white board writing surfaces, students can easily collaborate, display and explain their work to their peers,” explains Koulbanis. As classrooms need to be able to easily flex into differing group configurations, this type of environment requires mobility, at

times technological and at times physical, says Ash. “The products that support such modalities can be as simple as movable tables that can be reconfigured, caster chairs paired with wider tables that allow students to turn to the row behind them for breakout teaming, or mobile tablet-arm chairs that incorporate personal storage and a wider tablet and can quickly move from lecture configuration to huddled groups.”

A final trend involves even further hands-on education in the form of active learning models. Several universities, in fact, have developed specific platforms to facilitate the process,

Sign of the Times Whether it’s for active learning, science-ondisplay or café-type settings, the game has changed and today’s architects are specifying an evolving array of product and material selections to meet the needs of today’s higher education student.

MODERN MODALITY As active classrooms, such as this one at Augustana University’s Froiland Science Complex in Sioux Falls, N.D., continue to gain traction, flexible furniture and technologyenabled workstations are in need.

‘Youth-ing’ the Design Process, Or How Hip-Hop Entered the Design Vernacular While architects strive to stay relevant, listening and improvisation has become part of ‘Looking Up.’ It’s a challenge to maintain a needsbased practice in a demands-based society, comments Katherine Darnstadt, this month’s Architectural Leader. This is especially the case as related professionals get more design savvy. “Who will be designing

A new dawn of collaborative architecture—one involving more external voices—is upon us. architecture in the future? Will it be a marketing analyst at a developer’s office?” posits Darnstadt, referencing a Swedish developer who designed the “Perfect Swedish Home,” based on synthesized real-estate data. One way she keeps her firm, Latent Design, relevant is by honing analytic skills; it is currently helping the city of Chicago analyze the distribution of its public spaces to form a plan that increases residents’ accessibility to parks. On the West Coast, AIACC’s Mallory Scott Cusenbery shares an example of how’s she’s keeping architects relevant: When the firm met with the steering committee of the Ashland Youth Center in Alameda County, for a design directive that would “guide and inspire,” it was met with silence until someone suggested ‘free-styling’ it—a term for improvisational rap. Cusenbery went with it, referring to it later as “youth-ing” the design process. This begs the question, who will strive to bring equity to the design process? I think this is signaling the dawn of collaborative architecture, and smart designers will find ways to work in other voices—emerging voices that can aid in agilely and cleverly improvising the best strategies to match a client’s priorities and values throughout the design process. In other words, such voices are giving the design process a needed refresh to stay relevant, in part, by reinventing and adapting products to solve applications that align themselves with client challenges and budgets. From Specifier’s Solutions to Product Developments, AP subscribes to this vision, providing firms a monthly “product refresh.” So enjoy the following attempt at free-stylin’.

The softening of interiors is even coming to hard surfaces. The advantage to this textile look comes in the form of cleanability and durability in high-traffic environments.

CRYSTALLIZED TEXTILES 3form’s new Textiles interlayers blur the lines between translucent hard surfaces, textiles and light filtering screens. Deconstructed fabrics are stretched to reveal the unique nature of the fibers composing them in Varia or Glass. Circle 413

The first rule of college: go to class ounder’s Way on the campus of East Carolina University gets students to class on time— by foot or bike—with colorful clay pavers that replace an unsightly asphalt street, alleys and parking lots. It’s all done with one versatile product—authentic clay pavers—in five colors. English Edge Full Range and Pathway Full Range pavers make up the pedestrian right-of-way, while Georgian Edge Buff pavers comprise the cycling lanes, with English Edge Autumn directional arrows and English Edge Dark Accent dividing lines. Fired at 2000°, the colors are permanent and will hold up for generations of traffic while complementing the school’s historic brick buildings nearby. Our colors inspire designers and architects to make any hardscape more creative and functional. Read more project details at: PineHallBrick.com/AP

When it was time for the Yale School of Medicine, Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH) to renovate its pediatric MRI suite, the hospital kept young patients and their families in mind. In addition to the emotional toil associated with illness, institutional-looking walls and cold, stainless steel finishes of testing equipment can contribute to a young patient’s fear and anxiety. To reduce negative feelings and create a comfortable, healing space, the hospital sought a kid-friendly environment for its MRI suite that would evoke fun. With patients, staff and equipment continually moving throughout the suite each day, the use of highly durable materials was also paramount. The renovation customized YNHCH’s pediatric MRI suite by giving it a full-immersion beach theme. With a life-size sand castle positioned over the MRI scanner, flooring that mimics the coastline, and full wall murals, children can imagine a fun-filled day at the shore while undergoing medical testing. By using Acrovyn Doors by Design, playful images now flow from the walls onto the doors, creating a nonstop scene. The decked out doors provide the pantone-matched colors from the walls and withstand continuous impact.

FIRE AND SMOKE PREVENTION Two new tape products—Fire and Water Barrier Tape and Smoke and Sound Tape—bring a new option to stopping the spread of smoke and fire. The first is intended for sealing perimeter and other construction joints, providing fire protection and a watertight seal. The second seals against the spread of hot and cold smoke and reduces sound transmission for construction joints and through-penetration applications. Circle 386

TECHNICAL GLASS PRODUCTS Fireframes TimberLine Series www.fireglass.com

LINEAR ACOUSTICS WOOD FRAME LOOK TGP Fireframes TimberLine Series enables the look of wood frames in interior glazing applications with stringent fire and life safety performance criteria. The system pairs a high-strength steel subframe with a real wood-veneered metal cover cap resulting in slender fire-rated frames that enable tall spans while serving as a barrier to heat and conductive heat transfer. The series is combined with Pilkington Pyrostop fire-rated glass to allow for unrestricted glazing in locations where the total gazing area exceeds 25% of the wall. The frames are available in white maple, cherry, fir or oak. Circle 383

Boston Public Library, Central Branch Boston, Mass. Entering the Boston Public Library’s flagship Central Branch, it is hard to decipher if you’re in a trendy bookstore or a free-lending public institution. Grab coffee for sale at the News Feed Café, sit along the window bar and read, all while Boston’s PBS-affiliate WGBH (also housed in the library), broadcasts a live interview with the mayor of Boston. There’s no circulation desk in sight. Originally constructed in 1895, with a second building addition in 1972, the Boston Public Library’s Central Branch was a hodgepodge of renovations and additions for decades, lacking a main connection. That’s when local architects William Rawn Associates, Architects were charged with creating a master plan. Going well beyond their mission, the team created a LEED Silver-targeted modern bibliothèque that beckons the 21st-century Bostonian inside.

Clifford V. Gayley, FAIA, LEED AP, is a Principal at Boston-based William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc., leading many of the firm’s higher education buildings, civic and cultural projects.

Glass

The library’s back walls that meets glass are the building’s original limestone walls.

The project’s lighting designers took a very different tack with the Lumio Book Lamp fixtures that adorn the front of the library—the product was actually created as a portable light source for reading, but LAM custom hung the “books” from a thin cable for power, creating an absolutely perfect accent.

Rather than using aluminum mullions, the team employed ½-in. fully tempered glass fins to maintain ultimate transparency. “The goal was to make the building warm and inviting and to do that we made the glass as transparent as possible, using low-iron glass set deep between the granite piers,” says Gayley.

Solar Control Neighboring tall buildings cast shadows on the library, but also provide sun control on non northfacing walls. The architects swapped dark-tinted glass and stone walls for floor-to-ceiling custom transparent, low-iron glass that reveals the new light wood and limestone interiors. “Suddenly the library had an opportunity to become part of the pedestrian experience on Boylston St.,” says Gayley.

Authenticity, Reliability and Strength.

YOUR VISION. OUR EXPERIENCE.

Steel windows from the early 20th century were big, with true divided lites and single pane glass. Accurately reproducing them means incorporating modern materials and insulating glass to create a contemporary version of this classic design. Graham’s innovative SR6700 meets the challenge. This authentic look is achieved with large openings, minimal sightlines, applied grids and even a floating vent. So authentic that we have helped numerous projects attain National Park Service historic approval. Bring your vision to life. Call Graham.

Along the 200-ft. long façade that faces Boston’s famous Boylston Street, patrons come to read books and just unwind. “We’ve lined all the windows with continuous ‘bar-height’ seating like in a café so reading is on display. You’ve got the newest collections and interactive displays right near the front door,” says Gayley. “Libraries are learning from retail.” Column Covers and Displays The original rectangular concrete columns were covered with custom wood column covers, giving them a curved shape and creating a warmth that coordinates with the ceiling and the limestone flooring. “Display pieces were custom-built on casters so they’re moveable and reconfigurable. This way, over time, the library can move them around and re-organize them in a way that will suit some other future need.”

An alternative to traditional veneer products, Miro uses the durability of mitered steel with the performance of modern laminate technology for conference tables used in the café area.

“We used an off-the-shelf product, standard Armstrong slatted WoodWorks Grille, that we could actually shape. We used this standard product in a nonstandard way to create a scalloped effect,” says Gayley.

“This was a very big floorplate, and by giving it color, variation and modulation, the space feels energized, and is visually interesting to move through—it doesn’t feel endless,” says Gayley.

By building a “stage” three steps up in this space, Gayley made the room a little smaller and warmer (hence the wood-look LVT tile), while shortening the staircase to create a more accessible mezzanine. “The space has a grain to it; everything is going in the same direction. You’re either going across the grain, or with the grain. This created a subtle wayfinding.”

Converging Architectural + Performance Goals

Museum on the Square, Santa Rosa, Calif. Museum on the Square transforms an abandoned, nuclear blast-resistant telephone switching building in the heart of downtown Santa Rosa into a mixed-use project that will play a key role in the revitalization of the area and will be an outstanding example of urban green development.

Built windowless in the 1970s with 18-in. exterior concrete walls, the five-story, 99,000-sq.ft. reinforced building, now called Museum on the Square or 520 Third Street, needed to transition from its bunker-style construction to a distinctive structure that complements Santa Rosa’s Courthouse Square. Redevelopment of the vacant building, completed in Feb. 2016, had

82

been on the city’s radar for economic development for years. “It was seen as a high-visibility and symbolic project because of the activity it brings to the south side of the square,” says Don Tomasi, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, and Principal with TLCD Architecture, which makes the second floor of the building home. “The redevelopment fits nicely into the urban fabric of downtown Santa Rosa.”

The original 75-ft. tall concrete monolith located on Santa Rosa’s main “Old Courthouse Square,” was an eyesore that presented a solid façade along the southern side of the city’s most important public space. “It was widely believed that it could not be successfully renovated, and that the building would need to be demolished,” says Tomasi. “Reusing the structure to add windows was particularly

daunting because the exterior walls are structural shear walls, which limited the amount of concrete that could be removed,” he says. According to Tomasi, the initial discussion was if this hulk could be successfully renovated, or it if needed to be demolished. “Our firm believed that it could be successfully renovated, and produced quick early sketches to demonstrate how this might

be done.” The idea, he adds, always was to express the industrial character of the building as a unique amenity, while transforming it with new windows and a new skin that would make the building a “good citizen” among its neighbors. There were also myriad design issues trying to work with the unforgiving nature of the building and its many eccentricities. For instance,

removing enough of the concrete walls to allow adequate windows for daylighting the building interior presented a challenge. Tomasi says the design team had to find an economically feasible means of offsetting the shear force resistance lost by the elimination of said walls, without resorting to a new and expensive bracing system. In the end, 17 windows were cut in and perforated metal panels added.

PAST TO PRESENT 

BEFORE

AT&T built a switching station four decades ago to handle Transpacific calls into the United States. Built windowless in the ’70s with 18-in. exterior concrete walls, the building needed to transition from its bunker-style construction. When the company moved next door, planners wanted to modernize the old facility for re-use.

Photos: David Wakely

A complete update of the interior and exterior was required, including adding openings in the thick walls. The plan called for designing and constructing an expansive cladding system, which the team decided to create from an off-white colored material by McNichols’ Perforated Metal. To create interest, the designer added origami-style vertical fins for character and to shade the openings. Original plans called for an all-glass façade for the 83-ft. × 126-ft. building front. Considered too expensive for the $16-million project budget, the team opted for the combination of glazed glass, balconies and approximately 6000 sq. ft. of perforated aluminum panels.

SOLID TO OPEN With the help of 5-ft. diamond saw blades, large portions of the fortified wall on the north side facing the city’s Courthouse Square were demolished, creating 17 openings. The openings, averaging 250 sq. ft. each in size, would become glass panels and balconies. Substantial portions of the south exterior wall also needed removal for additional glass panels to bring extra light to the interior. The old AT&T switching gear had to be eliminated, along with miles of obsolete wiring throughout the building.

AFTER

WINDOWS This project was more about removing items, rather than adding new ones. Nevertheless, the key products for the shell building are a US Aluminum Storefront window system.

“It was widely believed that it could not be successfully renovated, and that the building would need to be demolished. Reusing the structure to add windows was particularly daunting because the exterior walls are structural shear walls, which limited the amount of concrete that could be removed.” —Don Tomasi, TLCD Architecture

THICK CUTS

METAL PANELS AND FINS The team selected Metal panels made from McNichols Perforated Metal, Round Hole, Aluminum Type 3003-H14, 0.25-in. thick, 5/8 Round on 7/8 Staggered Centers, 1.5-in. Solid Margins—All Sides, 46.3% Open Area. Approximately 150 of the white, resin-coated panels, measuring 4-ft. wide × 10-ft. long, were applied as cladding over a section of the original cement façade and glazed glass. The decorative portion that resembles origami, an ancient form of Japanese paper art, comprises approximately 24 ft. × 42 ft. of the cladding.

09 . 2017

1709APFXN.indd 83

Fabricator and installer B.T. Mancini Co. followed TLCD Architecture’s design specs, which specified the cladding and sculpture-like feature to be coated with a white, resinbased finish. This adds to the modern transformation and provides an unusual contrast with the industrial nature of the concrete exterior, some of which was left exposed. Because of the thickness of the cuts, numerous passes of the saw blades had to be made. The saw was mounted to aluminum rails that were bolted to the inside of the building. Because of flying debris, the saw was operated by remote control. Blades were as large as 5 ft. in diameter, and had to be cooled with water. The removed panels were so heavy, some more than 33,000 pounds, that the crane had to remain close to the wall.

Downtown Santa Rosa The juxtaposition of the existing industrial loft structure with its new, sophisticated façade will assure that Museum on the Square is a bold and unique addition to Santa Rosa’s downtown. TLCD Architecture’s new office makes full use of the open, industrial loft space. “This project began as a search for new office space in downtown Santa Rosa, because of the open loft-like spaces that accommodates our open, collaborative work style. Because the space is easily reconfigured, it is ideally suited to modifications to meet our future needs,” says Tomasi.

RESISTING LATERAL FORCES

Unique Challenges The Museum on the Square project experienced several setbacks as the economic and civic landscape underwent changes. The passage of California State Assembly Bill AB 126 called for the demise of Santa Rosa’s Redevelopment Agency, which owned the building. This caused difficulties with transferring ownership of the property, at one point putting the project in jeopardy. Project investors became wary, which exacerbated delays. The development/design team remained steadfast through numerous starts and stops, and remained optimistic that some form of their vision would breathe vitality into the downtown square. The Redevelopment Agency was the city entity that owned the building. During escrow the governor eliminated the agency. When the redevelopment agencies were eliminated, the agency could no longer transfer title to the property to the developer—the agencies no longer existed. The state department of finance needed to approve the transaction. Otherwise title insurance could not be issued. But the process for state approval had to be established. The local “successor agency” that was the custodian of local agency assets had to be created as well. It was many months before the process itself was created—and many months after that to complete the process, and obtain state approvals for close of escrow. The professional concrete demolition team on the project was amazed by the scope of the concrete removal. Bringing light into the building was transformative, and lowering huge concrete panels to the ground was dramatic.

84

ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS

1709APFXN.indd 84

The design team found that by increasing the thickness of the remaining walls, and modifying other structural members it was possible to provide a balance between daylighting needs and an economical means of resisting lateral forces.

“The redevelopment fits nicely into the urban fabric of downtown Santa Rosa.” —Don Tomasi, TLCD Architecture

INTERIOR DESIGN Acoustical concerns are addressed with carpeted areas, felt panel screens along the circulation path and tackable acoustical panels. A simple black and white color palette complements the sandblasted and polished concrete. Warm natural MDF and restrained use of blue accents renders a very creative and urban environment.

“Living walls, also known as green walls, are structural systems that attach to existing exterior or interior walls to transform unadorned wall surfaces into vertical gardens,” said Dave MacKenzie, president,of the Spring Lake, Mich.-based manufacturer LiveWall. “When installed indoors, they make interior spaces more appealing and inviting and they improve indoor air quality.” INFLUENCE: “Think about the typical car show-

room. They are sterile, stressful. Our living wall is an organic, green element that creates a more relaxed, welcoming environment,” said James Hartzberg, general manager, Subaru Pacific. “As a symbol of our commitment to sustainability, it connects with the values of Subaru car buyers.” Love of the outdoors and concern for the environment are hallmarks of the Subaru brand. For example, Subaru has built all its cars in zero-landfill

manufacturing facilities since 2004. “The green wall brings to life what LAcarGUY and Subaru stand for,” said Alisha Auringer, manager of the environment, LAcarGUY. “It visually expresses our commitment to caring for the environment.” CRITERIA: Subaru Pacific earned distinction as an Eco-Friendly Certified Dealer—joining the ranks of Subaru dealers that meet stringent environmental standards. In addition to the green wall, Subaru Pacific has a 100-ft.-long stormwater retention planter that captures all the runoff from its building, and daylighting solar tubes reduce electricity consumption in the service area. SOLUTION: Created with the LiveWall Green Wall System and installed in Jan. 2016, the Subaru Pacific green wall is 13 ft., 7 in.-high and 8-ft. wide. Totaling 110 sq. ft., it has 10 rows, each with six LiveWall modular wall-planters lined with plant container inserts that have a mix of six different indoor plants. Florasource, an independent horticulture supply company and Southern California LiveWall representative, advised LAcarGUY on green wall design and plant selection and provided 120 pre-grown nursery plants in the containers.

Opening Doors for Children’s Hospital At the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, designers were challenged to create a space that blended the friendly, caring nature of the hospital with the unity and enthusiasm of Hawkeyes’ football, so that every child could enjoy the essence of game days.

COMPLETE COMFORT All of the doors contribute to the comfortable, clean feel of the hospital, helping participants enjoy the game-day spirit of Hawkeyes’ football.

CHALLENGE: Completed in early 2017, the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital provides a friendly, comfortable environment for children and their families. The hospital is conveniently located across the street from Kinnick Stadium, home of the Iowa Hawkeyes. In 2009, the hospital and the Iowa Hawkeyes teamed up to create Kid Captain, a program that honors pediatric patients and celebrates their inspirational stories. The embodiment of the teamwork in the hospital is the Press Box, which is located on one of the hospital’s highest floors and has a direct view looking into the stadium to allow patients to experience the excitement of game days without leaving the hospital.

Design team members were challenged to create a space that blended the friendly, caring nature of the hospital with the unity and enthusiasm of the Hawkeyes, so that every child could enjoy the fun essence of game days. The doors would need to play a key role in expressing the press box feel while allowing for privacy and giving the care team a clear line of sight for patient monitoring.

The “Press Box” has a direct view of the field, looking into the stadium to allow patients to experience the excitement of game days without leaving the hospital.

SOLUTION: VT provided 1168 doors for the 14-floor hospital. Unequal pairs at the entrance of each room allow easy access for doctors and nurses, and make moving equipment in and out of rooms quick and easy. All of the doors contribute to the comfortable, clean feel of the hospital, helping Kid Captain participants enjoy the spirit of Hawkeyes’ football.

Wholesale Food Facility Blends Modern and Industrial Wholesale foods distributor Sirna & Sons Produce was looking for modern and industrial— all while being functional and maintaining a budget. CHALLENGE: The family-owned company provides fresh fruits and vegetables direct from growers to restaurants, healthcare facilities, hotels, country clubs and institutions across five states. Placing a high priority on quality, freshness and timely deliveries, the family-owned company targeted a multifaceted expansion of its headquarters and distribution facility in Ravenna, Ohio in the summer of 2016. The project provides more than 43,000 additional square feet of refrigerated warehouse and over 12,000 sq. ft. of office space.

Project manager and designer Nik Sirna, Peninsula Architects, was challenged to create a budgetfriendly plan that blurred the line between the modern and industrial aesthetic, while implementing innovative, sustainable building elements to meet the demanding performance requirements essential for cold storage facilities.

“The owners asked for their facility to look cutting-edge, modern and industrial, all while maintaining a budget.” MODERN AND UTILITARIAN DESIGN

SOLUTION: The design team relied on Metl-Span’s insulated metal wall panels for the building envelope. Available in multiple thicknesses, the product’s factory foamed-in-place polyurethane core achieves the high R-values necessary in cold storage construction, an industry where temperature objectives can range from 50°F to -30°F.

Project: Sirna & Sons Produce Location: Ravenna, Ohio Architect: Peninsula Architects

PRODUCT SPECS: Product: CF Mesa & CF Light Mesa Insulated Metal Panels FOCAL POINT AESTHETICS Sirna targeted the street-front façade as the project’s aesthetic focal point and the ideal location to drive home the owner’s goal of modern and utilitarian design. He accomplished this task by blending multiple panel profiles and colors. Metl-Span’s CF Mesa and CF Light Mesa panels provide a lightly corrugated profile with a flat appearance—complemented by the ribbed CF Flute panels and their distinctive bold, vertical lines.

CRITERIA: Conventional, multi-component building envelopes address the critical weather barriers with multiple product sources and installation steps, leading to an overly complex wall assembly and lengthy construction schedules. IMPs provide the same performance elements in a single, easy-toinstall component. The end result is a more efficient building envelope that impacts everything from interior trade coordination to the bottom line.

Peninsula Architects specified approximately 52,000 sq. ft. of Metl-Span 4-in., 26-gauge insulated metal panels (IMPs). The product provides thermal efficiency and all-weather control in a single component. The highly efficient insulation delivers an added advantage by minimizing building energy usage and construction costs. The product’s unique foam core even allows the performance of the insulation’s R-value to increase as the core temperature of the panel decreases. Metl-Span’s highperformance insulating core is sandwiched between impermeable steel exterior and interior faces.

Windows, Entrances, Curtainwall

Mixed-Use, Transit-Oriented Development Earns Gold

Photos: Joshua Jay Elliott, courtesy of Works Progress Architecture

The city of Portland, Oregon’s new 10-story, mixed use, transit-oriented development known as Slate earned LEED Gold. Formerly Block 75, the high-efficiency building features window, entrance and unitized curtainwall systems.

LOOKING EAST Slate’s design features floor-to-ceiling curtainwall, which aids in the success of the space by fostering a visually seamless relationship between the building’s interior and exterior environment.

CHALLENGE: A cornerstone in the city’s efforts to

revitalize the Burnside Bridgehead area, Slate rises on a previously vacant lot. Opened in Sept. 2016, the project spans 147,000 sq. ft. and offers 75 marketrate apartment units on the upper six floors; 35,000 sq. ft. of creative co-working office workspace on the second and fourth floors; and 7800 sq. ft. of retail space at street level.

control, low-E, insulating glass achieves the specified performance for low solar heat gain coefficient, low U-Factor, high condensation resistance factor and high visible light transmittance. Seasonal opportunities for natural ventilation also help reduce the demand on HVAC systems and associated energy use. Weather permitting, the operable windows on Slate allow tenants to enjoy fresh air, natural light and views.

Designed by Works Progress Architecture for codevelopers Urban Development Partners and Beam Development, the property conveys a “push and pull” theme exemplifying the location’s vibrancy. The glass, metal and concrete façade consists of articulated, modulated, rectangular shapes, including some that are setback and some that project over the sidewalks below.

“The building adheres to a carefully considered, cohesive, unified design concept that promotes the building as a bold, permanent fixture of the Burnside Bridgehead, the larger Central Eastside Subdistrict, and the larger Central City Plan District,” concluded Portland’s Design Commission.

“It creates the illusion of a shifting stack,” describes Works Progress Architecture’s Ian Roll. “On the North and South sides, the curtainwall has a flat, clean, crisp look that transitions to a sculpted, figural texture on the East and West elevations. The curtainwall is crucial in registering the intentional lines and visual elements.” CRITERIA: To match Portland’s climate and the

project’s goals for energy efficiency and occupant comfort, the aluminum-framed products have been thermally improved by Linetec using a polyamide barrier. Combining the thermal barrier with solar-

SOLUTION: The high energy-efficiency building features window, entrance and unitized curtainwall systems by Wausau Window and Wall Systems. Roll notes that the firm worked closely with Wausau Window and Wall Systems from the project’s earliest stages.

Wausau Window and Wall Systems provided more than 40,000 sq. ft. of INvision 7250i-HRX SSG Series unitized curtainwall and 7250 Series SuperWall; 240 project-out awning 4250Z zero sightline windows; and 4250i-TD Series terrace doors and D5100 Series sliding patio doors.

“With digital modeling, we were able to get inside the units to balance where the glass and metal panels should be placed for the right performance and look.”

QUITE A PAIR Opened in Sept. 2016, the library’s prominent glazing, supplemented with SEFAR’s Vision fabric interlayer, contributed to credits for BREEAM, the UK’s sustainability assessment method for masterplanning projects, infrastructure and buildings.

Library Doubles Down on Daylight Innovative fabric interlayer allowed extensive glazing without a need for exterior or interior shading.

CHALLENGE: Officials at the University of Birmingham Library in Birmingham, England, wanted a lot of daylight for their new library, but wanted alternative options for dealing with the accompanying solar heat gain. The new library is one of the key features of the university’s £300 million campus regeneration. SOLUTION: Birmingham-based Associated Architects, in turn, specified SEFAR’s PR 260/55B Gold SEFAR VISION fabric for glass vertical fins to provide a modern take on functionality. Visually, the interlayer gives a contemporary aesthetic to the library. The high level of laminated glazing maximizes views both into and out of the building

94

ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS

while achieving optimum day-lighting and creating a quiet perimeter study area. Functionally, the fabric interlayers improve thermal performance by reducing heat load, and will save expenses on HVAC. The laminated fabric mesh will also reduce glare by mitigating visual light transmission, eliminating the need for exterior louvers and interior shading systems. SEFAR VISION utilizes the three-dimensional effects of the fabric, to provide a unique depth to the glass façade, which is typically seen as a two dimensional system. The interlayers can also be printed with UV-stabilized inks to produce any Pantone or RAL color, customizable patterns, and other visual effects without the exterior facing design reading through to the interior.

“We are recommending the system on other projects because of its performance and cost advantages.”

RAIN RESISTANT Crews were less dependent on weather conditions, which was fortunate, since the Tacoma, Wash. area received twice its average rainfall during Oct. 2016. Quality control was also straightforward, as the workers did not have to apply building wraps, thin or thick fluid-applied membranes, peel-and-stick membranes or other additional WRB-AB layers.

No ‘Sog’ Story Fiberlgass Mat Gypsum insulation system proves its worth as a valueengineered alternative to the project’s original sheathing specification.

CHALLENGE: In contemplating insulation solutions for a U.S. Army Logistics Facility at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM}, near Tacoma, Wash., the region’s humid climate, particularly during the rainy season, became prohibitive for many options, including traditional gypsum panels and a fluidapplied air barrier membrane. SOLUTION: Design-builder RQ Construction and its subcontractor Sessler, opted for Georgia-Pacific’s DensElement Barrier System. “It’s much less weather sensitive than traditional strategies, and it lets you waterproof and dry-in, in one step,” says Glenn Fisher, Georgia-Pacific building envelope manager.

The system has an improved fiberglass mat gypsum sheathing panel with an integrated layer of waterresistive and air-barrier material. Unlike other systems, workers only have to seal interfaces, fasteners, openings and penetrations. All sealing is done with PROSOCO R-Guard FastFlash liquid flashing,

96

ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS

1709APSPS.indd 96

which can be applied even when surfaces are damp. “The DensElement Barrier System made a huge difference on this project. We are recommending the system on other projects because of its performance,” says Max Tooley, Sessler project manager. Sessler started drying-in the building at the end of Aug. 2016. The project required 80,000 sq, ft. of DensElement sheathing and 540 tubes (45 cases) of FastFlash liquid flashing. Tooley observed that his installers mastered the new system with ease. “Being able to install in less time with half as many employees creates substantial savings.” Learning to apply the liquid flashing requires less than an hour of practice. It bonds to damp substrates and doesn’t need a layer of fiberglass mesh tape. Dry-in work can continue during inclement weather, and contractors can begin interior work even while a building’s cladding is being installed.

Theater Achieves Open and Unique Aesthetic The new Writers Theater, located in Glencoe, Ill., designed by Studio Gang Architects, creates a space that brings energy to the town while maintaining an essence of transparency and fluidity. EX TERIOR SOLUTIONS

CHALLENGE: In 2016, Writers Theater packed up and moved to a new location in Glencoe, Ill., in order to perform in a larger space and attract additional followers. Decked with floor-length windows and open social spaces, collaboration is encouraged with the hope of better uniting people through theater. INFLUENCE: Located in the downtown area, the building reflects the theater company’s objective to maintain intimacy and audience involvement. The main theater seats 250 patrons with a second performance venue, a black box, seating 99. Amenities also include several rehearsal rooms, a public gathering space and a formal event venue on the second floor. One of Chicago’s most reputable architecture firms, Studio Gang Architects—led by Jeanne Gang, FAIA—designed the new Writers Theater with the intention of creating a space to bring energy to Glencoe while maintaining an essence of transparency and fluidity. SOLUTION: Materials for the project included metal products finished in Valspar’s Fluropon exterior

architectural coating donated by Petersen Aluminum (PAC-CLAD). The donation consisted of more than 6200 sq. ft. of PAC-CLAD materials, including 0.040 aluminum sheets in Midnight Bronze and 24 gauge steel sheets finished in Stone White. Additionally, 230 liner feet of PAC-TITE 0.040 Angular Fascia and 180 sq. ft. of PAC-750 Soffit Panels were also installed to complete the exterior. The metal material coincides with a strategic mix of wood and concrete, adding to the building’s façade. While not an orthodox blend of materials, this design mirrors the Writers Theater mission of pushing the envelope and challenging the norm. In addition to the pleasing aesthetic, the incorporation of metal wall panels provides the building with lasting protection and sustainability. Complementing the benefits of the metal wall panels, Fluropon equips Writers Theater with color retention and consistency. More than beauty, Fluropon boasts flexibility and formability, as well as resistance against the elements.

Ventilation Even in warmer or colder climates, natural ventilation is still a viable option for at least 20% of the year, which from a 2030 perspective, means shutting down a building’s HVAC system for two months. That said, geography and climate do play significant roles in a more comprehensive natural ventilation strategy, adds Mike Toohey, director of architectural sales and marketing with Bilco, as do site lope and elevation, in context of airflow paths. Furthermore, Toohey advises designers gather historical temperature data to better determine if the mix of natural ventilation with mechanical HVAC.

Natural ventilation can help bring IAQ and temperature to acceptable levels in many spaces, while also aiding daylighting goals.

last detail: architectural leader

FRESH MOVES 1.0 In 2012, Katherine Darnstadt turned a decommissioned Chicago Transit Authority bus into a mobile produce market, bringing fresh vegetables to food deserts to Chicago neighborhoods six days a week. Growing Power, a national non-profit urban farming initiative, adopted the Fresh Moves program in 2015 and worked with architect Benjamin Hammersley to deploy Fresh Moves 2.0 from a former bookmobile.

“How do we, together, as a profession or by ourselves, start to lead with equity and diversity? We need to make democratic spaces and we’re doing it with a process that’s inherently not democratic at all. Do we have equitable processes to create the built environment equitably? That means taking very strong stances as how we as professional organizations can bridge divides instead of build walls.”

Seriously Bad Ass Katherine Darnstadt was AIA’s Young Architect of 2013 and one of Crain’s 2014 “40 under 40.” Since then, her firm, Latent Design, has continued to be a catalyst for equity in design in both the communities where her projects are built and in the profession of architecture.

Leader of the invisible-sounding fi rm, Latent Design’s Katherine Darnstadt is more recently known for coining the viral hashtag #notmyAIA, and has been called a “serious bad ass woman” for leading a thriving practice with a foundation of social architecture and design. “Practice is something that you do to get good, not because you are good,” says Northwestern-educated Darnstadt; her firm practices leveraging policy to create projects that have a legacy of social impact. Original social interventions with no prototype on a shoestring budget is a challenge, but the firm works intentionally for all its projects to be scalable and repeatable in other cities across the United States. “We’re not just making the object, we’re making something that manifests a legacy and that’s what we do inherently, when you think about it, you take the equity of one and leverage it into the next. For instance, the firm’s Boombox project supports local entrepreneurs with temporary pop-up storefronts. First deployed in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, the next Boombox will pop up in Austin, Texas.

116

ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS

1709APLSD.indd 116

Latent Design’s “Define.Design.Deploy.” model of practice actually doesn’t stop at Deploy. The projects are continuously dissected for their effectiveness. “It’s frightening to go back,” admits Darnstadt. But, she says, “Social washing is just as rampant as green washing and we need to know, are we being effective or are we making a veneer?” The projects are evaluated based on their benefits and effects on the project sites, which helps connect the dots to define design priorities from this list: Engagement, Education, Economics, Culture, Policy, Health and Wellness, Walkability and Transit. Darnstadt sees young architects coming out of school with the technical abilities and know-how to affect change. “We’re seeing a radical shift within this social impact field; more and more designers coming out of school who really believe in that and don’t want to work to far away from it.” With savvy and determination to stretch resources to run its original projects and establish a general contractor arm of the business, Latent Design serves not only as a role model to young graduates, but Darnstadt

Katherine Darnstadt is an architect, educator and founder of Latent Design, a practice at the intersection of architecture and community.

has shifted the dialogue at the National Level. During AIA’s National Leadership Institute, Darnstadt shared the Mobile Market design to illustrate the idea of “Tactical Leverage,” and subsequently was asked to present “Fresh Moves Mobile Market” at the AIA National Convention this past spring. It’s just one example of the narrative forming around the firm’s successes. “Small [interventions] can lead to large ones, and that can lead to systematic change.” Darnstadt is beating the odds designing needs-based projects in a demand-based society, and despite Illinois’ governor Bruce Rauner’s suspension of grant money to many of the firm’s clients, Darnstadt is not deflated. “I am seeing a shift of where those [needs-based and demandsbased projects] are meeting and advancing each other with multi-year commitments that take deeper, shallow dives to advance a goal forward.” —Megan Mazzocco, Senior Editor
