Commercial/Industrial LED Sales SSL WORKSHOP OUTLINES CURRENT CHALLENGES AND FUTURE PROMISE

Commercial/Industrial Sector—LED Sales

Linear Fixtures Hi/Low Bay Downlight Track GSL

One of the primary lessons learned from DOE’s November 2014 Solid-State Lighting Market Development Workshop is a basic one: when talking about the transition to LED, we’re talking about a whole lot more than just a better light bulb. Researchers, designers, utility program managers and market-research analysts offered attendees a vision of connected, intelligent lighting that could actually boost our health, along with an understanding of the challenges that must be addressed if that vision is to become a reality. Market analysts, such as Mary Yamada from Navigant’s Energy Practice, are bullish on sales

and what that rapid evolution can mean for designers. At the Burden Museum in Troy, N.Y., DOE researchers conducted one of their GATEWAY LED research projects. The effort was delayed by 14 months between the design and bid phases, during which time:  Specified LED PAR38 lamps were discontinued

or were noted to experience reliability problems. Original PAR38 track heads were discontinued, necessitating a switch to dedicated LEDs.  Selected LED strip lights were no longer available in the needed output level, requiring a switch to a different brand with a different driver.  Most dimming circuits had to be reevaluated for compatibility and load; these factors all con-

work is underway to understand how higher lighting color temperatures can help those doing overnight shiftwork stay more alert. For Partha Dutta and the Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center, broadening the scope of SSL’s impact requires a shift in how we think about “smart” lighting. “What most people call smart lighting is ‘smart thinking about lighting systems,’” he says, “while what the ERC is looking to do is create ‘smart lighting systems that think.’” Osram Sylvania’s Lori Brock agrees that the industry needs to reconsider its long-held focus on components and turn, instead, toward users and their lighting requirements. Maximizing the potential of SSL’s addressability and controllability, she says, will require the industry to “spend a lot less time thinking about bulbs and more time thinking about people.” •

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE: OLED

OLED Making Its Way to Market If commercial availability is a sign of market viability, then organic LED (OLED) fixtures have made a major breakthrough. This fall, Home Depot began selling two OLED luminaires manufactured by Acuity Brands, the largest lighting manufacturer in the U.S., at prices ranging from $199 to $299. Acuity, among several other makers, has had high-end, mostly commercial products available for several years. Now the Chalina surface-mount and Aedan sconce/pendant are among the first mass-market offerings of the rapidly developing technology. These product introductions come as manufacturers here and abroad are scrambling to improve OLED performance and lower its cost. As part of its larger SSL efforts, the U.S. Department of Energy is tracking and promoting OLED development. In its most recent Manufacturing Roadmap, the DOE notes that lighting manufacturers are breaking away from previous efforts to ride the coattails of OLED display makers to develop lighting-specific fabrication processes. The roadmap targeted three specific areas for increased research investment:  Integrated OLED substrates  Organic layer deposition  Assembly operations. In the meantime, though, several market-research firms remain bullish on the prospects of OLED lighting. IDTechEx forecasts the annual U.S. market for related products reaching $1.9 billion by 2025—with the caveat that this market won’t begin rapid expansion until 2019. NanoMarkets sees the market hitting $1.4 billion by 2019, citing recent investments by Philips, Osram and Konica Minolta in production facilities as reasons for their optimism.•

PERFORMANCE VENUE LIGHTING: MANN CENTER

New LED Lighting Rocks Philly Mainstay The Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park has hosted musical performances for nearly 40 summers. A recent facility improvements program included upgrades to the visual and lighting systems. “The new lighting was critical to the overall renovation work that was undertaken to enhance the evening outdoor musical experience for the patrons,” says Kirsten Kent Carangi, RA, principal of BEAM, the project’s lighting designer. BEAM’s program encompassed illumination for the entire exterior of the site outside of the shed. BEAM designed the space with indirect lighting wherever possible, placing concealed egress lighting using a continuous product from LEDLinear under a meticulously detailed curb design along the pathways. High-output illuminated LED handrails from ETI, Inc. provide lighting along the stairs and have smooth continuous dimming for use during performances, egress, or clean-up. “Contemporary, sleek pole fixtures along the

STATE OF SOLID STATE 2015 In this the United Nations Year of Lighting, many good things are happening; in fact, in many instances, the cost of LEDs are nearing parity with conventional lighting. Still, obstacles exist, primarily the learning curve involved in shifting from traditional lighting sources.

TOPICS AT THE FRONT

Color Stability With lots of R&D invested in creating package and phosphor stability, Brian Terao, director, solid state lighting products, Osram Opto Semiconductors, Northville, Mich., sees module manufacturing processes, along with tighter color distribution on the part of LED package manufacturers, as ensuring better color stability. Lutron’s Biery adds that, with good design practices, and proper installation, quality LED products can match—even exceed—the color consistency of fluorescent loads. For example, Cree’s EasyWhite 2-step bins, according to Scheidt, deliver a high level of color consistency, on par with incandescents, and the company’s new SC5 Technology Platform supports longer product life at higher operating temperatures, while still delivering color stability. Utilizing dimming controls can also support color constancy, says Biery, as dimmed LEDs run at a cooler temperature, whereas excessive heat can lead to LED color shift. Meanwhile, Nakamura is all-in when it comes to violet-based, fullspectrum LED, as opposed to bluebased LED for white lighting. The latter, he says, is “fundamentally problematic because the white light is composed of two separate Although some claim that mid-

manufacturing with LED,” adds Scheidt. For example, Cree provides an LED chemical compatibility application note that includes lists of chemicals known to be incompatible with Cree XLamp LEDs, and has partnered with materials manufacturers to inform its customers with information on acceptable materials. In terms of testing, Biery reports that LED manufacturers are working with standards-setting bodies to make testing less burdensome. For instance, a UL TL program allows fixture manufacturers to more easily substitute drivers from multiple manufacturers with a minimum amount of additional testing. Similarly, some manufacturers, including Lutron, are providing “TL-rated” drivers so that fixture manufacturers can undergo less testing. Meanwhile, Terao suggests evaluating what the market actually needs to help reduce testing time. For example, he says if an LED

The narrow spot, crisp beam edge and low glare make the lamp suitable for retail, restaurant, museum and hospitality lighting applications.  Visit www.soraa.com Judges’ Comments: “Using a violet LED pump, the color rendering of these lamps challenges the entire industry to rethink color quality.”

The only dimming module of its kind in the market that takes a 0–10V dimming signal and a fixed line voltage input and converts it to an ELV dimmed output for flicker-free dimming, the LDCM-PL allows products that can only be dimmed with ELV dimmers to connect to building-wide 0–10V systems making it not only versatile, but also allows for designers to achieve flexibility to dim multiple long runs of products with only one 0-10V dimmer.  Visit www.ecosense.com Judges’ Comments: “Anything that helps designers use fewers dimmers for cost savings, needs to be recognized.”

APPLICATIONS  MOST INNOVATIVE USE OF SSL

MOST INNOVATIVE USE OF SSL Philips Color Kinetics BCP Affinity, Lima, Peru

In 2014, Banco del Credito de Peru (BCP) wanted to update its façade to celebrate a modern and progressive Peruvian society and to reflect their new brand identity of transparency. BCP commissioned designers Claudia Paz and Nicholas Cheung to translate these themes into a lighting design. The three dimensional façade consists of an LED canvas, an interactive LED outdoor podium with multi-touch sensors, and an interactive lighting control system. Paz used Philips Color Kinetics ArchiPoint iColor Powercore for the outermost layer, and the company’s iColor Flex MX gen2 to compose the remaining layers. The result is two distinct grids, one bright, bold, and sparse for dramatic moments; and the other concentrated and subtle for nuanced sculptural effects. Passersby can choose from eight interactive shows that use both light and sound, including effects such as constellations, fireworks, and rain. “We wanted to create a permanent installation on an urban scale instead of just a media façade,” says Paz. This canvas, she notes, forges a unique connection between the bank and community by engaging city dwellers. “Each show intuitively steers people to express themselves,” says Paz, creating a space for social participation for people of all ages. ”Our vision was to give people a new way of seeing, feeling and experiencing their perception of self and the freedom to explore new sensations,” she says. “Seeing this conversation between a person and light, in my mind, is magical!”

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

“Very cool. I like the interactive quality of the project, and that the designer sparingly but tactfully applied color to the building—a task not everyone handles well, as color can often be too much. Very tasteful—and fun.”

SPECIAL CITATIONS Beyond outright winners in each category,

MARKET LEADERSHIP

we also recognize a number of outstanding aspects of the general entries in our “Special Citations.” These awards reflect submissions that really jumped out at us, especially in regard to aspects such as initiating truly sustainable programs. That said, we’re honoring these companies and products in the following areas: Most unique product—Expands lighting design and applications beyond the conventional; Standout advancement in technology—Exhibits a specific and useful advance in SSL performance; Most sustainable product; Most effective new product—high efficiency coupled with high quality lighting features; Best retrofit product; Best replacement product; and best component-level product.

MARKET LEADERSHIP Beyond feting products, we also wanted to recognize manufacturers who are “good guys,” in the context of doing good things for the community, other than simply producing quality products. The honors have taken the form of our Market Leadership Awards. We asked companies to provide examples of their leadership through various efforts, be it research, involvement in standards development, education, creation of useful tools and websites, and the like.

Continually innovating with new products, services and tools, OSRAM Opto is a true leader in helping further the adoption and integration of LEDs in the SSL market. From participation in industry events and conferences, to offering free services and educational materials, the manufacturer is at the forefront of education and is enabling the market through its technical services. One of its offerings is PASS—Premium Application Support Services. This service helps luminaire manufacturers prototype LED systems, simulate/measure performance and provide reference testing. It’s also a hands-on program that gives designers access to application engineers, prototyping capabilities, simulation, LED data and much more. Complementing PASS is the company’s LED Light for you (LLFY) network, consisting of certified partners specializing in the disciplines of optical, thermal and electrical design and LED integration. Beyond technical expertise, OSRAM Opto is extremely visible in the community, whether it’s via speaking at industry events or regularly contributing articles to industry publications. The manufactuer is also heavily involved in implementing SSL standards. But it’s educational effort don’t stop there. It’s website, www.ledlight.osram-os.com, is the “Education Hub for everything SSL,” featuring technical papers and presentations; training slidecasts and the company’s LED Fundamental training video series. There are also free downloadable printed circuit board files which can help customers save valuable time and money in bringing their ideas to reality. It also offers free, downloadable gerber files for most of most of the company’s key SSL products. Finally, there’s the Optics Selector Tool which assists users in finding the right lens for their LED designs. Judges’ Comments: “Once again, OSRAM Opto is at the fore of the effort to make the transition to LED as easy as possible for specifiers, be it their PASS service, their various educational efforts and conferences and workshops, or its website dedicated to answering basic, but critical LED questions. Not to mention they produce great white LED sources. Bravo.”

Product Introductions

It’s Un-Can-y Mounting to a standard 4-in. junction box, new Faux Cans from MaxLite provide ceiling mounted downlighting without the can (though a separately sold mounting bracket allows existing recessed cans to be retrofitted with these new fixtures). The luminaires provide illumination equivalent to a 75W PAR 30 halogen lamp, with a color rendering index of 90-plus. The dimmable fixtures can be ordered in either 4- or 6-in. diameters.  Visit www.maxlite.com or Circle 303.

Improvements in optical design, thermal management and LED efficacy are pointing the way to LED technology taking over as the most desirable source for downlighting.

1 Designed for the Great Outdoors The Professional 14W 5/6-in. downlight from Civilight replaces units for 75W incandescents in new or existing recessed fixtures. The dimmable downlights are offered with color temperatures ranging from 2500K to 5000K.  Visit www.civilight-na.com or Circle 304.

2 Put It On Display The TX20 spot luminaire from Times Square is designed for use in museum and retail settings where low wattage high-output illumination is required. Fixtures come with three field-changeable reflectors in four color temperatures.  Visit www.tslight.com or Circle 305.

3 LED Update Designer Marc Sadler has updated his Foscarini Compasso d’Oro-winning Mite floor luminaire for the digital age with this LED version. Standing over 6 ft. high, it combines either Kevlar thread (for the yellow version) or carbon thread (for the black version) and a fiberglass fabric. Outward illumination is diffused through the resulting opaque surface.  Visit www.foscarini.com or Circle 306.

NEXT ISSUE: Architectural SSL’s next edition in April will also be a new venture, in that we’re creating a special Lightfair companion issue that will focus on projects, products and trends driving current lighting designs using SSL.

CORRECTION: In the October 2014 issue, the image and text of the Meteor REV downlight and the Times Square TX20 spotlight were mixed up with text running for the latter with the former’s image. Both corrected items appear in this issue, with the TX20 running on page 61 of the Advances section; the Meteor REV is actually a PIA winner and appears on page 38.
