Breaking Down 5.1 Quads of Savings DOE: FIVE QUADS OF ENERGY COULD BE TRIMMED ANNUALLY IF LED EMBRACED

Turning Down Lighting Energy Use No-LED Scenario

5.1 QUADS IF DOE TARGETS ARE MET

Energy savings from LED lighting will top 5 quads annually by 2035. So says DOE in the seventh edition of the biennial report, Energy Savings Forecast of Solid-State Lighting in General Illumination Applications. The latest report uses an updated 2016 U.S. lighting market model and extends the forecast period to 2035 vs. the 2030

DOE Goals Scenario

limit used in past reports. That huge energy savings, is of course, if everyone adopted LED across the board. While that’s somewhat outlandish, DOE says what more inconceivable is that if this happens,

ABOVE: From 2015 to 2035, a total cumulative energy savings of 62 quads is possible if the DOE SSL Program Goal for LED efficacy and connected lighting are achieved—equivalent to nearly $630 billion in avoided energy costs.

solid-state lighting will not simply slow the rate of growth in energy consumption for lighting, it will in fact, turn the consumption curve down. That curve, DOE notes, will keep going down through the extended forecast period. Annual savings by 2030 previously had been estimated at 4.5 quadrillion BTUs (quads), meaning maximum adoption would have cut lighting

energy use in half compared to where it would have been if SSL had not entered the market. The newest projection steps up that estimated savings to 5.1 quads by 2035, representing a 75%

lighting will have tremendous growth over the remainder of this decade, reaching anywhere from 25% to upwards of 80% of lighting sales by 2020. DOE estimates that LEDs, conservatively, will constitute about 30% of U.S. lighting installations by 2020, which is on the conservative side

nual energy savings in 2020 estimated by DOE is substantial, topping 1.5 quads if DOE targets are met. LED products, DOE believes, will dominate every general lighting niche. By 2035, LED lamps and luminaires are anticipated to hold the majority of lighting installations in each of the niches examined, comprising 86% of installed stock across all categories. In 2015, LEDs represented only 6% of installed stock. By far the biggest energy savings will come from four product categories plus connected lighting technology. As shown in the figure, most of the 5.1 quads of projected energy savings by 2035 will be attributable to two commercial lighting applications (linear and low/high-bay); one residential application (A-types); and one that crosses both residential and commercial (directional). Connected lighting and other control technologies will be essential in achieving these savings, accounting for almost 2.3 quads of the total.

Updated Model The lighting market model used in this year’s report is more finely calibrated

NEW LIGHTING PLAYER: DYSON

Engineering Customer Crossover

Dyson—certainly known for its revolutionary vacuum cleaners on the residential side, is making a big push to more things commercial, starting with lighting. Last year, through Jake Dyson Products, a separate operation, the company forayed into task lighting with the CSYS (pictured

long, and less than 2 in. deep), but powerful suspended direct/indirect fixture with a fairly novel heat sink, copper—thus the science guy stuff reference as the elemental notation of copper is Cu. The heat pipe heat sink technology employed in the wings of the industrial-feeling fixture uses water in three sintered-copper tubes on each side of the fixture to cool the luminaire. Light-wise, a single, chip-on board array, in a two-binning process, is optically engineered via a custom-designed lens for glare control and to maximize output so that a single Cu-Beam can illuminate an area formally done so by two more traditional luminaires. A dimmable DALI driver is also included.•

SCHOOLS: FLIEDNER H.S. DUESSELDORF, GERMANY

T8 Abatement Classrooms in Theodor Fliedner High School in Duesseldorf, Germany, were in need of a major renovation. Traditional T8 fluorescent troffers were replaced with “three lines of light” in the ceiling that provide a bright and even illumination of the horizontal and vertical surfaces. The new light lines are the XOOMINAIRE 4262 luminaires with a luminous flux of 2,200 lumens per meter at 4000K. The installed luminaires are flush with the ceiling beam and run elegantly between the white ceiling panels, giving the impression of a modern ceiling grid. The white ceiling panels reflect additional light and make the room appear brighter. Through this interaction between architecture and lighting design, the classrooms are enhanced, and there is a welcoming and open atmosphere.•

The dimming advantage The Philips Bodine 250W ELI-S-250 emergency lighting inverter adjusts the emergency light output of connected luminaires during a power outage by means of an industry standard 0-10V dimming control interface. This auto-sensing feature allows multiple luminaires to be driven in emergency mode at a combined 250W maximum input power. The ELI-S-250 is programmed to automatically calculate the appropriate output and maintain a 250W output power level throughout its 90-minute emergency runtime. Sinusoidal output. UL Listed.

Pixel-Perfect The debut installation of NanoLumens’ Outdoor Gallery Series at the American Airlines Arena in Miami takes advantage of the solution’s durability, curvability and extremely small pixel pitch, which enables clear displays even in up-close viewing in daylight conditions. “The vast majority of outdoor display products are intended for long distance viewing,” says Robert Cross, director of research and development for Nanolumens. “By reducing our pixel pitch from 4mm to 9mm, we’re able to bring the display closer to the viewer. The project also had to address extreme environmental concerns, including corrosion, high temperatures and hurricane-force winds. • ABOVE: The Outdoor Gallery Series can be tailored in any size, shape or curvature.

systems further expand the need for sophisticated controls integration. The interest in controls has created a veritable flood of products, protocols and components into the market. This has stressed existing standards to their breaking point. Further, a lack of robust universal protocols has resulted in a confusing mess of proprietary solutions, patched and adaptive interfaces, and conflicting approaches. Wireless technology presents a very attractive alternative to wired controls connectivity. Recent improvements in hardware and software have improved wireless reliability, making it a viable approach. However, PoE (Power over Ethernet), which combines power distribution with controls integration, makes wireless control of hard wired products unnecessary. Powerless controls (energized by kinetic or light energy coupled with wireless interfaces), and light wave communication (where lights flicker to send and transmit information and control data) are also

FOCUS SHIFTING TO PEOPLE

03_HUMAN FACTORS AND WHITE LIGHT

There is an expanding demand for products that support the underlying concepts of human-focused lighting response and enhancement, including use of color tuning and quality rendering and color temperatures. Pictured is the Museum of World Cultures in Barcelona who artifacts are set off with ERCO’s Optec and Pollux fixtures.

The inclusion of human factors and the effect light has on individual health and well-being has grown in interest to the point it now attracts the attention of researchers and practitioners alike. Unfortunately, there are conflicts in interpreting research, inclusion of anecdotal “study” results, conflicting objective research and questions of applicability of investigations completed using obsolete technologies. In spite of the confusion, there is an expanding demand for products that support the underlying concepts of human focused lighting response and enhancement. Demand is growing for white light tunable products, ranging from 2700K to 6500K CCTs, blue light enhancement, simple-to-program software and local individual control. This has created a chicken-egg dilemma. Manufacturer investment required to deliver the desired effects and interfaces are significant. Yet, current market demand is comparatively small. For this reason, very few offer the additional dimension of color tuning, other than using redundant dimming functions to control color, which is imprecise. Yet, without available effective controls and supporting white-tunable products to connect to them, there is little opportunity for these concepts to balloon into a significant demand. Over the next five years, there will be an increase in available products to fill the demand for white tuning. However, without a uniform standard as to how this is to be accomplished, it is unlikely there will be widespread availability of products to apply this technique across more than a few targeted applications, such as open offices, classrooms or healthcare facilities. Manufacturing, retail, and small-tenant spaces will likely never see this applied beyond a few special task lights or other easy to apply products. On a far simpler level, application of lighting qualities (CRI and CCT) to improve visual performance, adjustments to lighting to improve visual comfort, and enhancements in task/ambient light relationships can be applied immediately. These can be deployed with new or retrofit lamps, small changes in light fixture placement and other methods scaled to customer budgets and end user needs. Addition of local controls using simple wireless modules installed in fixtures can also be deployed incrementally.

The concept of a universal light source footprint, that can be replaced at some point in the future, makes a great deal of sense, and “feels” right. The Zhaga Consortium has invested a great deal of time creating just such standardization. However, experience has shown that there are two other factors, beyond mechanical, at work.

Learn more about our brands

As new LEDs are introduced, it is common for drive current and voltage differences require the driver for that LED also be replaced. This reduces the value of a modular footprint, as LED replacement now requires rebuilding the entire fixture, which involves the complex problem of sourcing a new driver that fits the mounting location (for which there is no standard), delivering the new

current and voltage range required to suit the new LED, and finding suitable expertise to apply the repair at a reasonable cost. Further, the life of current LEDs is so long, that the failure point will likely be the driver, making the standard light module irrelevant.

SMART SHOPS Purveyors of consumer food products are commissioning new structures and interiors that flaunt the “wow” factor in an increasingly competitive market. By once relentlessly adhering to predictable store design policies, it was hard for customers to discern the interior of one chain from another. To build sales volume across new platforms, enhanced in-store customer experiences, both visual and electronic, have been widely adapted with success by apparel, shoe and accessories retailers.

Zehrs, Barrie, Ontario, Canada Zehrs in Canada supports the philosophy that there’s a new and improved place in the food retailing firmament for the familiar layout and merchandise presentation techniques that have characterized supermarkets for decades. Upgrades in lighting, display fixtures and signage are evident yet subtle. Architect Mark Landini of Landini Associates, describes it as “unashamedly mainstream.” The target market for Zehrs is suburban and affluent. Designed in a “Neighbour” format, the interior brightness visible through the glass façade welcomes shoppers and communicates a positive shopping experience inside. Landini exchanged a previous palette of primary colors for neutrals and natural materials such as wood barrels and exposed brick walls. Concealed lighting behind the header that identifies product groups creates a mid-layer of light to balance the overhead illumination. According to Landini, “Dwell times and basket sizes have increased.”

 COMFORT FOOD SHOPPING Located in suburban Toronto, Zehrs bases its appeal as a casual grocery store that has expanded with a new upscaled environment that still maintains its casual neighborhood image. Improvements include LEDs used for high bay fixtures, track lights and recessed awning light.

Market Hall, Rotterdam Entering Market Hall in Rotterdam is comparable to the wonderland Alice found herself in at the bottom of the Rabbit Hole. Combining 100 food retailers, 200 living units, leisure activities and parking below, the $196 million, 137-yard-long arc/shed-like structure is sited in the heart of the city’s Laurens Quarter. Designed by the architectural firm MVRDV, the colorful mural-covered interior functions by day as a traditional covered central food market hall. In the evening, it is an illuminated public space with restaurants, clubs and meeting areas. On the upper levels of the arch, living areas of the apartments that require natural light are on the outside of the structure; kitchens, dining rooms, and storage spaces look onto the interior market vista. The 119,000-sq.-ft. mural was created by two Rotterdam-based artists, Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam.

A complete renovation of the Rokkeven Shopping Center in Zoetermeer, The Netherlands, located 10 miles north of Rotterdam, created a dynamic visual unity between a main corridor, called Vers (Fresh) Passage, and the individual shops. Architect Arjen Reas was challenged to change a dim, dead-end walkway into a cohesive path with its own architectural integrity extending to the vendor spaces. Reas created an overhead slat structure that unifies the space and encourages shopper exploration. LEDs, rated at 3000K, were installed throughout the project. Above the walkway are 40W strips, 45W panels, and 12W minis. In the 2,400-sq.-ft. Butchershop Reas, (operated by a member of the architect’s family) the overhead directional slats with integrated lighting continue the Center’s dominant design theme. This study was important to make a final decision on the gimbal size and to stay within standard off-the-shelf optics,” Voeten explains.

DUMMY HOUSINGS WERE MACHINED FOR THE CEILING PANEL MAKER TO VERIFY THE FIXTURES FIT. The fixtures have two spring clips, so they can clip into the ceiling boards. “We machined dummy housing for the company that made the ceiling panels to verify the fit of the fixtures. This was important since each pod has a different ceiling finish and/or material. The dummy models helped the fabricator to verify the holes, and in addition, they made a template for us as well, to keep checking tolerance during the manufacturing process,” says Voeten.”

ETHEREAL ILLUSION EXECUTED PRECISELY FADES SERPENT SHELL INTO THE NIGHT SKY SERPENTINE PAVILION London, England

The 2016 edition of London’s annual Serpentine Pavilion is a 14-meter-high sculptural structure designed by Copenhagen/NYC-based architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Since 2000, the grounds outside the Serpentine Galleries, the event’s host, have become an international site for architectural experimentation and has presented projects by some of the world’s greatest architects. BIG’s entry takes the form of a wall created from stacked, open-ended rectangular boxes. The wall appears “unzipped” to form two sinuous strands that bulge apart to form a central cavity. It is a fascinating, 3D environment, featuring many dichotomies that allow the space to be experienced in many ways. Fabricated from pale-green-toned translucent fiberglass, it appears linear and yet curvaceous, modular and yet sculptural, and substantial yet insubstantial, depending on the vantage point. As the sun tracks across the sky it creates dynamic shadow play, with the movement of people adding to the optical effects. As daylight fades, the pavilion is enhanced by lighting that tapers softly from the bottom up to reveal the undulating form. The structure’s nighttime appearance was very important to the architect. “It was important for us that the lighting at night would enhance the geometry of the structure and be coherent with the perception of the pavilion during day time,” says Maria Sole Bravo, senior designer at BIG. The firm worked with Zumtobel, an event sponsor, and more specifically their UK-based brand acdc Lighting, to execute the lighting. BIG

envisioned a glow from the base, with light grazing up the walls to emphasise the textural form; it would then gradually dissolve the structure into the dark sky. To preserve the purity of the lines, BIG requested all lighting equipment to be

THE CHALLENGE: Invisibly illuminate this translucent structure created by BIG Architects for the 2016 London Serpentine Pavilion. Preliminary modeling, however, revealed the structure could not be solely lighted with uplights alone. THE SOLUTION: BIG worked with Zumtobel to add minimally invasive spotlighting where appropriate—mainly behind seating areas. The wide selection of beam angles and distributions available with the selected fixture—acdc PLAZA 20—was essential to customizing the design to suit the complex geometry. The lockable bracket with marked angle increments was also invaluable for on-site focusing and adjustments, ensuring that once commissioned the lighting would remain fixed in place. PROJECT CREDITS:

it easier for lighting and access control systems to use BACnet as its primary protocol regardless if they are connecting to a BMS.

The “families” concept—actually not so new—adds special functionality in devices like gateways and routers. The original revision divided device profiles into two families: operator interfaces and controllers. A third family, “Miscellaneous,” was added to include routers, gateways and broadcast management devices. This families concept was so totally new—where a physical device could support multiple profiles— that it was soon realized such an application could be expanded to
