Swing and a Miss There are a few areas where the choice between solid-state and other conventional sources is obvious. For example, LEDs do not function well in high-temperature environments, so their use in ovens, or spaces regularly exposed to high temperatures is limited. Solidstate electronics are also not well suited to installations where lighting equipment is subjected to high levels of electro-magnetic radiation, line voltage spikes, or other issues that fry fragile circuits. Base Hits There are many application areas where SSL offers a small improvement over other

Homeruns There are many homeruns attributed to solid-state lighting. This is not always founded on energy savings, or objective measures. In applications where realizing a desired lighting effect, increasing lighting qualities, reduced fixture presence, and optimizing operational impact, solid-state attains both in-field and out-of-the park success. The first home run in solid-state came early in the technology’s introduction: color. RGB and single color LED systems put everyone on their feet. Even when systems cost many times that of a conventional lamp and filter approach, decisionmakers found that end results in both quality of light—saturation, color choice, vibrancy and intensity—delivered by LEDs were a real into-thebleachers hit. The market has always had a desire to utilize color in washes and effects. Before LED, Triples

is municipal street lighting and commercial area lighting. The combination of energy efficiency coupled with low maintenance cost and environmental survivability creates a strong case against conventional HID sources. The choice of white light to suit any number of desired end results, and optical efficiency further strengthen the case for solid-state over incumbent sources. Even when the solid-state product is several times the cost of a conventional product, analysis of operational costs (ROI) produces a solid case for solid-state lighting in large area outdoor lighting applications. Another significant homerun for solid-state is refrigeration case lighting. This is an application where incandescent has long since been abandoned, but fluorescent is not particularly well suited. LEDs work exceptionally well in the cool environment, offering significant improvement in energy efficiency, thus reduction in heat to be removed by the refrigeration equipment, creat-

Text: Vilma Barr Photos: Christian Richters The Challenge: Present-day Birmingham has a population of over one million, 25% under the age of 25, and a student population of 50,000 —the second highest in England. In 2008, the Birmingham City Council began to plan for the fourth library in the city’s history. The existing Central Library building was considered unfit for the masterplan. The Solution: Architect Francine Houben of Mecanoo Architects was influenced by the circle as a motif, derived from the vintage industrial gasometers used in Birmingham’s jewelry manufacturing industry. At 377,000 sq.ft., it is Europe’s largest civic library. LEDs are utilized for ambient, accent, decorative, and wayfinding throughout the building.
Opened in September 2012, the Library of Birmingham is described as Europe’s largest library housing both resources for academic research and a lending library. Its façade is wrapped in a filigree skin of metal loops, and a circular patio carved out of Centenary Square in front of the main entrance creates a protected outdoor space, directing daylight deep into the building.

“DOME RUN” REVIVING THE ARCHITECTURE OF MIT’S LIBRARY Massachusetts Institute of Technology Library, Cambridge, Mass.
Located in the heart of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology stands the Barker Engineering Library, whose reading room is capped by a great dome—one of the university’s signature architectural structures. At 64-ft. in diameter, the dome with a 25-ft. oculus was made with similar dimensions as the dome of Rome’s Pantheon. The single large round glass window over the oculus serves as the only difference between the two architectural classics. During World War II, the oculus, however, was covered with blackout shades. With the exception of a brief uncovering in 1946, the dome remained covered until 2012. When MIT began investigating renovation opportunities, Gary Tondorf-Dick, manager of special projects for the university’s Dept. of Facilities, was the first to notice the true potential of the dome. “It was such a unique and beautiful space—it was clear we were not adequately emphasizing it,” said Tondorf-Dick. The team had been conducting a restoration project on the exterior of the library and decided it was the opportune time to open the oculus. Additionally, MIT knew the skylight would provide adequate light while the sun was out, but wanted to investigate options for round-theclock illumination in the 24-hour per day facility. The 70-ft. library ceiling required a fixture that could provide quality direct light to reach down to the reading area while simultaneously using the same fixture type to accent the architecture. Furthermore, MIT needed a long-lasting source that would minimize maintenance. “We were looking for a fixture that would distribute

THE CHALLENGE: Find an appropriate lighting solution to re-illuminate the shuttered great dome and oculus of MIT’s Barker Engineering Library. The university wanted lighting that would seamlessly integrate into the overall architecture, as well as a solution that would provide the appropriate light levels for library use despite the high ceilings. THE SOLUTION: To achieve color boards balanced with natural daylighting and incandescent lights, an adjustable LED downlight solution from Gotham allowed the lighting designers to change the beam pattern and intensity of the fixtures around the rotunda, allowing the team to distribute light evenly across the library to give students enough light to work and make the architecture the focal point of the space. THE RIGHT LINES OF ILLUMINATION BRING OUT BEST IN FASHION FINERY Hugo Boss Retail Stores Los Angeles & New York
Hugo Boss commissioned LA-based lighting designers Visual Terrain to bring to life the many different levels of lighting required for their chic retail settings. This particular commission involved lighting work for a pair of stores in the Los Angeles area and one in New York. The team was led by Michael Mahlum, director of design & production at the firm’s Chicago office, as well as Kate Furst, a designer at the firm’s LA office, who directed the storefront designs for the New York store, as well as for the South Coast Plaza store, one of the LA locations. The Entrance Tasked with providing the proper illumination for the store front locations, the designers wished to illuminate the critical window display with a soft frame of light that would accent and showcase the window design, but not detract from the display itself. Visual Terrain experimented with a number of solutions, but none provided the output or effect desired. The designers ultimately discovered an LED linear fixture—Tivoli’s Illumiline. A 1-watt fixture that distributed a 120° beam spread for an even glow for illumination effects within 3 in. of the light source, the fixture also could throw light up to a 2-ft. from the source. Its small rectangular profile—1/2 in. x 9/16 in.—enabled it to fit into profiles of less than 1 in. for discrete or visible illumination. The narrow profile and the even light distribution was just the right combination to cast a continuous glow of light along the top
ABOVE: The soft light cast by the small-profile, linear Illumiline LED fixture from Tivoli used in the storefronts (top) reflected onto the brushed metal mesh inside each window, creating a stunning 3D effect that was achieved without having to use optics—an unexpected result that saved the project’s lighting designers, Visual Terrain, extra work and expense. Hugo Boss Retail Stores, Los Angeles & New York
THE CHALLENGE: Strongly, but subtly, use LEDs to illuminate store entrances and merchandise displays in Hugo Boss’ chic LA and New York stores while still maintaining a balance with the existing fluorescent lighting. Careful consideration to placement, color temperature and fixture aesthetic had to be observed to ensure a visually pleasing lighting scheme. THE SOLUTION: Thanks to low profile and flexible cove lighting fixtures that also offered a custom color, designers from Visual Terrain were able to deliver accent lighting that completely matched the stores’ existing fluorescent lighting, preserving the original lighting scheme. WHAT’S THE MOST OUTDATED TECHNOLOGY YOU USE EVERY DAY?
Answer: Thomas Edison’s light bulb – the technological innovation of the 1890s.
At Lighting Science, we think about lighting a little differently than most companies. We understand that light is much more than illumination. It affects sleep and health. And plants. Even wildlife.
At Lighting Science, we have engineered a way to make lighting better. Our LED lights not only save energy, last longer and cost less. But, they also can help you sleep, help you focus, and impact your life in surprising ways. Every day.
