WIRELESS LIGHTING CONTROL FIT FOR A CONTENDER When the Chicago Cubs embarked on the $500 million restoration and expansion of historic Wrigley Field, they looked to Audacy® to help bring the iconic venue into the modern age.
“The Clubhouse itself had some very unique features that we wanted to make sure lighting control could handle,” says Carl Rice, VP of Wrigley Field Restoration and Expansion, “and we found that the Audacy product was a perfect match.”
Starting with the Clubhouse, Audacy developed a customized, app-driven wireless lighting control system that allows the Cubs to create custom lightscapes which can easily shift between day, night and celebration settings.
While superior player comfort and performance was the organization’s goal, an intuitive system that was easy to install, configure and maintain was the engineers’ goal. Thanks to Audacy, both have been achieved.

“The system has been terrific” said Crane Kenney, President, Chicago Cubs Business Operations. Having chosen a 100+ year-old company to take their 100+ year-old ballpark into the future, the Cubs now trust Audacy to light their new office building and guest suites. If you’re looking for the simple, easy way to take your lighting control into the future, look to Audacy.

New forms and collaborations with fixture manufacturers are becoming the new norm when it comes to delivering the right look and feel in today’s hot interior spaces.
Exiting the office and other everyday spaces are boring, overhead general illumination sources. In their place are discreet yet powerful sources that don’t distract from a space, but deliver light levels needed.

When it comes to illuminating buildings and structures at night, the movement toward architectural definition sensitive to the dark sky, but functional to viewers and passers by.
Tasteful, controlled color schemes now dominate many edifices attempting to make night-time statements. Rich in saturated color, successful RGB illuminations require a plan.
LED’s growing capabilities are being paired with artists who are becoming true masters of this digital light medium.
50 Unsung Heroes Often buried in the glitz of great illumination schemes, controls technologies make LED standout from its lighting ancestors—even more so, when the community experiments with light in tandem with health and productivity.

Hilton Cleveland Downtown Hotel, Cleveland Architect: Cooper Carry Interior Design: Anderson/Miller Ltd. Lighting Design: Yarnell Assocs. LLC Architectural Lighting Design At 32 stories and 600 guest rooms, the Hilton Cleveland Downtown has assumed the role of the city’s largest hotel. On the exterior, lighting designer Bruce Yarnell’s slender, angled, fullheight illuminated shaft marks the building’s place on the skyline. Inside, materials and artworks follow angular geometric interpretations. The lobby’s terrazzo floor triangles and other freeform patterns are in shades of gray, from pale to charcoal with silver-tone accents. Overhead, an interplay of LED linear fixtures introduces applied lighting art to become a focal point clearly visible from all angles. In the lobby, a free-standing cylindrical screen fabricated from two-inch-wide black steel in a lattice-work pattern defines the space. Anchored on a black stone-filled base, the screen is slightly canted to contrast with the strong surrounding horizontal and vertical angles. Additional dimension to the screen was achieved by light beams aimed through its lower section, casting shaped shadows on the floor surface. Yarnell adapted the angled ceiling fixtures from the lobby to the main ballroom. Crystal-clad extended LED rods splay out from the ceiling, covered overall with triangles in shades of gray. In between are recessed black slots containing downlights for the room’s ambient illumination. The sound and the sprinkler system are also

Hancher Auditorium, Univ. of Iowa, Iowa City Architect: Pelli Clarke Pelli Lighting: Cline Bettridge Bernstein Lighting Winner of a 2017 IALD Award of Excellence, the university in its brief asked the design team to “Give us something we’ve never seen before.” Cline Bettridge Bernstein’s design highlights the pastoral setting reflected in the architecture while creating a breathtaking experience for patrons. A custom light fixture with a dropped lens lights the wood ceiling and describes the form of the building inside and out, dissolving barriers between interior and exterior. IALD notes it achieves notable purposes: its form and layout recalls a modern marquee, announcing the building’s purpose as a theater; it creates rivulets of light relating to the river below.
“THIS IS A SPACE THAT CELEBRATES ANTICIPATION. NICE TWIST ON AN OLD RECESSED DOWNLIGHT IDEA,” PRONOUCED IALD JUDGES. The lighting in the soaring atrium accentuates the space’s height and gives it scale. The core wall is outlined with grazers in shielded, solite-lensed slots. This detail, repeated twice more, according to IALD, breaks up the massive surface. The elevator core is lit top-to-bottom with the same detail. Within the theater itself, monumental custom fixtures create an awe-inspiring ceiling, while ingenious front-of-balcony lights make the house sparkle and glow. Giant custom rings of light, varying from 8-ft. to 55-ft. in diameter, create the ceiling plane against a dark blue Photos: Courtesy, Jeff Goldberg/Esto, Bill Adams
painted slab. Partial arcs of these fixtures adjacent to the perimeter walls create the illusion that the lighting extends beyond the theater— again, notes IALD, dissolving boundaries and barriers between spaces and creating a dynamic, engaging experience. The rings feature glowing lenses and decorative illuminated points that can be programmed to sparkle and chase.

Back by popular demand, the special focus pavilions on the show floor for 2018 are the Design, Exterior/Roadway Pavilions, accompanying the New Exhibitor Pavilion, the Global Light + Design Pavilion, Intelligent Lighting Pavilion and the IOT Pavilion. A Forum vs. Seminar Conflict
PRODUCTS
The conference program presents a significant challenge. The two forums, Light & Health, and Smart Cities, require all-day commitments. Yet, there are numerous presentations running at the same time. This will likely create some consternation, but the decision between forum participation and the regular program is less troubling. Manufacturers, marketers, sales channel members, and product developers will likely find that the topics in the regular conference are most attractive. For example, courses L18S08 – Building a Smarter Marketing Strategy, L18SM07 – the Value of 3D printing in Manufacturing, L18SM09 – Does your product

Duty-Free Shop Area, Pierre Elliott Trudeau Intl. Airport, Montreal Architect and Lighting Design: Provencher_Roy Architects Provencher_Roy were brought in by the airport as part of a large renovation, which included creating “The Loop”—the location of the terminal’s collection of Duty-Free boutiques. The firm also created the lighting, which was specific to each shop. To capture attention, highlight the merchandise, and bring down the visual sightline, they established an overhead grid with fixtures positioned like runways: long and straight and intersecting. Runner Camp, Shanghai Architect and Lighting Design: Prism Design, with Office Coastline Expressing one’s personal style for all activities is a popular form of visual communication in Shanghai. For the 6,700-sq.-ft. Runner Camp in the Infinite Plaza Shopping Center, Prism Design created a bilevel shopping environment for the display of apparel and equipment that encourages a healthy active lifestyle. The store’s merchandising approach is a colorful integration of an industrial design background, with orange color-infused apparel and accessories using strategically placed illumination. For the urban, industrial look, Prism Design selected metal grids, acoustic fiber board, and concrete for walls and stairs. To partner with and enhance the sport-oriented clothing selection, the choice was orange acrylic, stainless steel wire drawings and frosted metal boards. The store’s two levels are connected by a broad stair outlined in LEDs. The first floor is dedicated to Runner Camp’s sales-stimulating product arrangements, while the second level is multifunctional. Exercise classes are held here along with a sport training area which is equipped with an LED screen

599 Lexington Avenue New York City Lighting: Tillotson Design Assocs. A modernist 47-story building originally completed in 1986, the client felt the lobbies needed an update to attract new tenants, but the architect preferred the original architecture to be respected, turning this 2017 IALD Award of Excellence winner into a lighting intervention. Tillotson conceived a series of suspended vertical fins with appropriate luminosity, blending with the architecture, and providing a connection to the existing façade fin. Edge-lit with linear dimmable LED fixtures at top, the fin glass has a translucent frit providing a diaphanous appearance, allowing visibility while adding ingenuity to the concept of a luminous ceiling.

To meet the emerging and growing demand for effective horticultural lighting, there are no fewer than 26 manufacturers bringing their wares to the show to discuss and explore. While most of those listed do not actually provide products for horticultural application specifically, there are a few worth visiting that do. These include Croen International (5802), with its offering of products focused on Agricultural sectors, including Dairy Farms, Poultry Farms. AXP Technology (3190, 2294) will present its line of horticultural lighting products that utilize as many as seven colors to deliver the spectral energy required to meet the needs of growing facilities over a wide range of end products. Horner Lighting Group (4948) will also present its offering of horticultural products.
The Emerging Horticultural Lighting Business The advancement of LED technology has finally reached the point at which it can not only exceed the illuminance targets of traditional HID horticultural lighting, it can bring to bear significant advances in the form of SPD manipulation. This is leading to a revolution in the approach to horticultural lighting that brings to bear a two-fold advantage of optimized biological effect and reduced energy consumption. On Wednesday, seminar L18S10 (10:30AM) – Beyond Blue and Red: Key Challenges, Considerations and Benefits of Tunable Lighting Systems in Horticulture, by Rodrigo Pereyra, Dr. Erik Rundkle and David Hamby, will provide a foundation for thinking about this emerging technology. Later that day, LS18S13 (2:00PM) – Horticultural Lighting: A Growing Market by Doug Oppedal, Damon Bosetti, Philip Smallwood and

Marriott, North Charleston, South Carolina Lighting Design: Hubbell Lighting Just a short ride outside of historic downtown Charleston, S.C., sits the 14 story, 289-room North Charleston Marriott hotel. The facility, originally built in 1983, features more than 12,000-sq.-ft. of flexible indoor and outdoor spaces and more than 14,000-sq.-ft. of conference space. Renovated guest rooms feature sleek décor and LED lighting. Working with Hubbell, the hotel’s design team selected Prescolite’s LB6LEDA downlights, to establish a cohesive, glare-free color throughout the facility. The LB6 meets today’s most stringent energy codes, including California’s Title 24. More than 300 units were installed throughout the property. Also installed throughout are Prescolite’s specification-grade D2LED, an awardwinning downlight that combines superior brightness control with energy savings and low maintenance costs. The 2-in. fixture comes standard with 0–10V dimming capability, making it an ideal candidate for applications that call for both function and ambiance. “Establishing mutually beneficial relationships with suppliers is a key component to our success,” says Darwin Brumley, director of design & construction, JHM Hotels, which owns the Marriott. “We trust Hubbell Lighting as our lighting partner to identify the best products at the best price for each project’s purpose. This relationship is important as technology continues to evolve. Any major renovation, conversion or groundup project at JHM will start out with LED conversions or new LED products.”

Galata Tower, Istanbul, Turkey Lighting Design: Lightstyle A towering icon for citizens and visitors, the tower is one of Istanbul’s most well-known landmarks. Lighting designers Nergiz Arifoglu Lightstyle aimed to create an impressive design to emphasize the tower’s architectural features. The new colorful LED lighting also enables the tower to project itself as an urban icon in the heart of the cultural and artistic Beyoglu district. The renovation was undertaken without affecting access to public areas inside and around the tower. The tower’s upper section and spire were equipped with Philips Color Kinetics PowerCore fixtures, which present the opportunity to apply millions of colors and stunning light effects. The designers succeeded in creating a design that suits and respects both the tower and Istanbul’s night skyline, and is a source of pride for its citizens.

West Riverfront Park and Amphitheatre, Nashville, Tenn. Landscape Planners and Architects: Hawkins Partners & Urban Design Assocs. Lighting Design: Domingo Gonzalez Assocs. (DGA) Along the 18.5-acre site in Nashville’s growing “South of Broadway” or “SoBro” neighborhood, the West Riverfront Park and Amphitheatre is adjacent to the Cumberland River. Comprised of a 12-acre park and 6.5-acre riverfront area, and adjacent to the iconic Shelby Street Bridge, it is being developed for visitor and resident enjoyment. DGA’s scope included creating sustainable lighting design guidelines and master plan documents for the waterfront esplanade, park walkways, 1,000-person amphitheater, and public restrooms and amenities. Formerly occupying the acreage was a waste-to-energy conversion facility. Riverfront Park and the open-air Amphitheater have now become a vibrant beacon in the downtown Nashville skyline. Carefully positioned RGBW color-changing luminaires emphasize the amphitheater’s curving outline and surface materials. Cowl lighting accentuates the structure’s form. Stage-wall lighting and uplighting are mounted above the trusswork that frames the view of downtown Nashville. RGBW luminaires occurring at the cowl, stage, and the outer shell of the structure are combined with an architectural dimming system for performances. At the start of evening shows, adjacent landscape feature and pathway lighting are dimmed. On non-show nights the roles reverse, as the amphitheater defaults to a muted white while park lighting is brought up to full intensity. At park curfew, the lighting dims to conserve energy and consideration of nearby residential communities. Concealed are 3000K luminaires in railings, in grade, and within overhangs in structures to lluminate pathways, signage, and to softly graze the Park’s limestone walls. Custom-designed curving light poles are elevated on pylons along the promenade to define the park perimeter and light the roadway and greenway. At night along the promenade, a color changing undulating ribbon sculpture creates meandering curves echoing the river’s profile.

A Walk Around Outdoor and Custom Lighting
PRODUCTS
Outdoor lighting has entered a new age, where qualities and impact are as much a part of design consideration as calculated uniformity and minimum illuminance levels. The course L18S01 (Tuesday May 8, 2:00PM) – A walk in the park: Light’s role in outdoor public space, by Randy Burkett promises to be a great place to start exploring this topic in 2018. Another interesting topic will be L18SM18 (Thursday May 10, 11:30AM) – The Sky Glow Comparison tool. Meanwhile, the product category “Custom” has become saturated with manufacturers checking the boxes

Jacques Cartier Bridge, Montréal Lighting Design: Moment Factory, with Ambiences Design Productions, ATOMIC3, Éclairage Public/Ombrages, LucionMédia, Rélisations, and UDO Design French 16th century explorer Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) first claimed for France the vast top half of what was to become the continent of North America. The designation of Canada was derived after “kanata,” the HuronIroquois word for settlement. During the second of his three voyages to the New World, Cartier discovered a native village at the base of a large mountain, which he named Mont Real. In 1930, to commemorate Cartier and the historic founding of the city, the 1.6-mile-long Jacques Cartier Bridge was constructed, a five-lane structure that connects Montréal to Longueuil. Long recognized as an icon on the cityscape, city administration budgeted $39.5 million for improvements and contemporary lighting to integrate the bridge with Montréal’s lively urban ambience. To celebrate the city’s 375th birthday and Canada’s 150th, completion date was May 17, 2017. Moment Factory led a team of six expert multi-disciplinary a/v firms. “Living Connections” was the name assigned to the design and implementation of the program’s lighting segment. Philips Lighting was the source for over 2,200 color-changing iColor Accent MX Powercore LED lights. The fixtures met the performance requirements to create long ribbons of color and displays of large-scale video, graphics, and other decorative settings. Lumenpulse was responsible for 95 Lumenpulse Lumenfaçade luminaires for the lighting of the bridge’s supporting pillars. The interior of the structure is illuminated by 480 Lumenbeam LBX luminaires,

University Hospital of Poitiers, Poitiers, France Lighting Design: Tridonic The new lighting installation supports the treatment of cancer patients in a special room thanks to human centric lighting. A natural environment is being simulated to create a greater feeling of well-being, thanks to modern tunable white LED technology, specifically QLE PREMIUM modules from Tridonic mounted on the ceiling. These square modules offer an adjustable CCT of 3000K to 6000K at constant luminous flux and a dimming range of 10% to 100% without changes to the selected color temperature. The ceiling luminaire is controlled with the aid of the company’s connecDIM light management system. The LED modules are integrated in the cloud via an internet-capable gateway, which enables decentralized control of the light. The Technical Services department at the hospital used this system to create 100 pre-defined schedules.
