BEST PRACTICES IN HEATING ›› CONVECTIVE SOLUTION

Like Peas and Carrots: Glass and Hydronic Heating Whether for daylighting or to provide views, large expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass are a reality in most buildings today. However, this architectural trend poses challenges, including condensation and an envelope that results in fluctuating energy loads.

Condensation When warm, moist air comes into contact with cooler surfaces, droplets and fog can form on windows. In colder climates especially, buildings may struggle with frost buildup on the outside of windows if perimeter heating is not installed. Also, glass does not provide insulation as effectively as walls do. Because cool air is denser than warm air, it sinks and creates cold drafts near windows. Discomfort also occurs when a person sits near a cold window because their body temperature is higher than the temperature of the window. This will cause the individual to lose heat in the direction of the window.

Fluctuating Energy Loads Buildings experience changes in energy loads as doors and windows are opened and closed, and as more people enter or leave a space. Time of day and weather conditions also lead to significant fluctuations. For instance, when the sun is out in cloudless skies, interior temperatures can rise by nearly 40°F. To cool down, occupants may open windows, which causes direct energy loss. Without the ability to offset the temperature, occupants must either relocate or suffer in the heat, ultimately reducing productivity and satisfaction. In the opposite scenario, when the sun is not present, occupants can be left too cold. To achieve sustainability and occupant comfort more designers are exploring HVAC solutions to offset these issues. One option is low-temperature hydronic heating and cooling systems, which, ideally, could be powered by renewable energy sources, such as geothermal or solar.

Why Low-Temperature Hydronic Heating? Some hydronic systems rely on water to heat the surrounding area through a process called convection. With convection, air flows from below and is forced up or naturally rises across a coil when hot water is passed through. This hot air is then expelled above the coil and dispersed throughout the room. This circular airflow has multiple benefits in mainly glass buildings. These systems can be placed discretely along floor-to-ceiling windows, solving condensation and cold zone issues

12

1512APONS.indd 12

VIEW FRIENDLY Low-profile radiant heating systems, like the Clima Canal, deal with condensation issues by employing convection.

CIRCULAR FLOW With convection, air flows from below and is forced up when hot water passes over the coil; it then disperses into the room.

because they use convection to create a curtain of warm air throughout an entire room, providing a barrier between a cold window and nearby occupants. A sleek, thin unit also ensures views are not obstructed. The same effect can’t be achieved solely through in-floor radiant heating systems and radiant panels, which rely on radiation rather than convection to warm a surrounding area from the floor upwards. Heat from radiation is concentrated on both sides of a traditional radiator’s panels, but the effect causes significant energy losses on the window side. The heating effect from the room-facing side of a radiator decreases as a person gets further away from the unit.

of the radiator needs to be as low as possible. The lower the water content and weight of the heat emitter, the lower the inertia and the more controllable it becomes. Compared to in-floor radiant solutions, radiators equipped with optimized heat exchange technology are better heat conductors and have a lower overall mass. Technology that incorporates low-H20 solutions typically contain only 10% of the water content compared to traditional radiators, allowing them to react almost immediately as external factors change. Because the units contain a lower water content, they also remain at a lower exterior temperature, increasing safety for occupants. Low-H20 solutions are also a safer choice compared to hot panel radiators near windows, because during a cold winter day, traditional radiators generate a lot of thermal stress on the glazing.

Improved Comfort and Safety Hydronic systems can also solve the issue of fluctuating energy loads, which can become a larger issue within expansive spaces that attract many visitors, such as museums. However, in order for a unit to respond rapidly to the temperature changes due to internal and external energy loads, the mass

AAMA Addresses Condensation 72°F, and experiences a downturn with temperatures above 73°F to 75°F. As building owners look to renovate older buildings with more advanced technology or build new structures, old coal and oil-fired boiler systems are being phased out and hydronic solutions are being incorporated. Using them, developers and engineers have found energy savings of up to 30% to 40% above what ASHRAE finds acceptable, as stated in Standard 90.1. They are also seeing a return on investment of less than five years with low-temperature systems.

Cooling Made Easy Similar to the dynamic heating systems, hydronic cooling options also improve occupant comfort by accommodating quick and efficient cooling. With systems that can be equipped with individual climate control units, building occupants can set the unit to their preferred temperature rather than

HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE Hydronic systems require no duct work, saving space and avoiding the dust and bacteria that can collect without maintenance.

heating system provides output within minutes, generating enough energy to quickly heat the space. This is much more cost-effective and sustainable than the traditional method of starting up the heating system several hours before building occupants arrive. Conversely, on a warm day, the system can quickly reduce output during times when the building can take advantage of the natural solar and internal loads. Studies show that sunlight that suddenly enters a building through double glazing can add more than 3400 BTU/hr. per 11 sq. ft. of glass to a room. A system that is slow to adjust will cause occupants to overheat. Plus, each second that a radiator emits heat after switching off the system is a waste of energy.

Improved Productivity For businesses, proper heating can actually translate to a better bottom line. Studies have shown that improved comfort can positively impact employee productivity. According to David Pogue, national director of sustainability at CB Richard Ellis, worker performance improves with temperatures up to

12 . 2015

1512APONS.indd 13

Hydronic systems—ideally, powered by renewable energy sources—can solve the issue of fluctuating energy loads. having a single thermostat control the temperature for every unit on a floor. This gives occupants more personalized control of temperature within a space, and is especially ideal for residential units on the same floor. Additional features of new energy-efficient hydronic cooling technology include extra space, better indoor air quality and a lower total cost of ownership. Forced air systems require extensive ductwork throughout the building, which takes up a lot of valuable space. With new hydronic systems, ductwork is eliminated and extra ceiling space is freed—up to one additional foot per floor. This gives architects and engineers the opportunity to add additional floors or penthouse suites in high-rise constructions compared to buildings using conventional forced air systems. A solution that delivers the “triple bottom line” of people, planet and profit, hydronic heating and cooling systems are a sustainable option that maximize energy efficiency in glass buildings and make sense for both today and tomorrow’s indoor climate needs—and for the health, comfort and morale of building occupants.

The American Architectural Manufacturers Assn. has created and released a new document laying out comparisons among three different rating systems for condensation on interior surfaces of fenestration products. While root causes vary with climate and occupancy, the formation of condensation on these surfaces in winter months is deemed problematic in almost all modern buildings. This document addresses some of the common causes and the technical issues related to condensation. It also offers a comparison of the tools available for rating fenestration systems for condensation resistance. “This new AAMA document was developed to provide a single reference source on the three common condensation rating systems for the U.S. and Canada,” says Doug Holmberg of Apogee Enterprises, co-chair of the Condensation Ratings Comparison Task Group. “It also provides information on how each rating is calculated for comparing the condensation resistance of products and the differences in the rating systems.” Steve Strawn of JELD-WEN, co-chair of the Condensation Ratings Comparison Task Group, adds that window condensation ratings can be difficult to understand; the question has been further complicated by the use of different methods to rate condensation resistance. “We have attempted to summarize through this document how each of the ratings are calculated and will remind the reader that the results are not directly comparable,” says Strawn. “When comparing products side by side, specifiers should ensure that they are comparing products that have used the same condensation rating method.” More information about AAMA and its activities can be found via the AAMA Media Relations page or on the AAMA website. Total cost of ownership Total cost of ownership (TCO): human centric vs. common LED lighting (in € K)

LED lighting can be a big energy saver over traditional fluorescent technology; often, that savings alone can justify a lighting upgrade. Yet LEDs offer value beyond their more-efficient operation, with controllability beyond anything fluorescent or incandescent light sources can provide. With that control comes new possibilities for lighting that can boost Operating 42 productivity through its ability to reinforce costs humans’ natural circadian rhythms—all while it cuts a facility’s energy bills. In the last 12 to 18 months, a number of new LED fixtures and lamps have hit the market offering “tunable” control of lighting color temperatures, Purchase 77 price measured in degrees Kelvin, or “K.” In some cases, this is a dimming-related function that produces warmer illumination as light levels are reduced. In other cases, users are able to independently adjust output levels—measured in lumens—and color temperature. Almost across the board, though, these features are being marketed for the added design freedom they provide to create various lighting scenes. A relatively recent field of study looking at “human-centric” lighting (HCL) is highlighting the actual economic value tunable LEDs can create.

Understanding Color’s Impact For some time, scientists and lighting specialists have understood the impact lighting’s color temperature can have on human alertness. Higher color temperatures—those producing what is often confusingly called “cooler” illumination—are known to suppress human production of melatonin, the hormone that helps us sleep. Similarly, lowertemperature, or “warmer,” lighting can encourage melatonin production. Interestingly, these reactions occur separately from our sense of sight; even

those who are blind will experience the impact of varying lighting color temperatures. These reactions are both important in regulating 8 our sleeping and waking cycles—otherwise known 19 as our circadian rhythms. HCL experts see great opportunity in new tunable products that can shift color temperatures with high accuracy. This capability could help boost occupants’ productivity and 122 times of the day attentiveness, especially during when both might naturally lag.

Biology 101 Lighting helps us set our daily rhythms of sleeping and wakefulness through the pathway of our intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). These cells work independently25 of the rods and cones our eyes use to transmit visual images to our brain—which is why the effect can be equally strong in those who are otherwise blind. The ipRGCs feature a light-sensitive pigment called melanopsin, and when it senses light, production of the sleepiness-inducing hormone melatonin is suppressed. Light at a wavelength of 460 nanometers (nm) to 490 nm, in the blue portion of the visible-light spectrum, is especially effective at suppressing melatonin. That bluer light generally becomes a more prominent component of total illumination as coordinated color temperatures (CCTs) rise and, as a result, room occupants can become more alert when exposed to such light. It is this effect that is behind the recommendation that we limit our exposure to computers and tablets before heading to bed, because these devices’ screens produce light in this portion of the spectrum, which can make falling asleep more difficult soon after exposure.

Look Up, For Health Few healthcare environments are as stressful as an intensive care unit (ICU), where patients and their families can be at their most vulnerable— and such stress can work against recovery. Recently, a German hospital explored ways that room design might help reduce this anxiety, with advanced, tunable lighting playing a large role in the effort.

A NEW HUE Building on the popularity of the Hue app-controlled A19-style light bulb, Philips’ new offering brings similar functionality to flexible strip lighting. Like the bulb, this new product also can interact with home-security apps. It is available in 2-m strips.

The Charité Campus Virchow Clinic in Berlin has developed two prototype ICU rooms, working closely with GRAFT architects and the ART+COM design studio, as well as experts from Philips Lighting. A central element in these rooms is a luminous ceiling developed by the lighting manufacturer incorporating a range of LEDs, including colored, warm-white and coldwhite units. Using input from a patient’s physician, a custom-designed lighting-control system uses that information (along with live weather data from the German meteorological office) to create appropriate lighting scenes. Philips has begun commercializing this system under the HealWell label, debuting the approach at this year’s Lightfair. System testing also was conducted at the cardiology department of the Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands. Researchers measured sleep patterns, mood and other variables for patients in rooms equipped with HealWell fixtures and compared them to those in rooms with conventional lighting. Patients in rooms with the advanced lighting fell asleep faster, stayed asleep longer and enjoyed better moods (as rated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale). —Chuck Ross, contributing writer

One could even think of high-CCT light as similar to caffeine. In fact, humans exposed to illumination at a relatively high intensity and CCT over a period of 30-45 minutes can gain almost the same alertness benefits garnered from a cup of coffee. Recognizing this impact, NASA has updated the International Space Station’s lighting with LED fixtures featuring light output that can be tuned up to 6500K during astronauts’ work hours and down to 3000K before they head to sleep. Research conducted by lighting manufacturer Osram also backs up the effectiveness of high-CCT lighting in boosting alertness. The company sponsored a study at two different schools in Germany in which student performance was evaluated in two different classrooms: one using traditional illumina-

12 . 2015

1512APTRL2.indd 21

tion and the second using high-CCT lighting meant to simulate daylight. Students in the high-CCT classroom made up to a third fewer errors on concentration tests than when completing the same tests in the traditionally lit room. Identifying benefits like these that go beyond simple energy savings is important for facility owners and managers considering a lighting upgrade— especially in schools and other settings where high efficiency T8 fluorescent fixtures already might be in use. Though LEDs may offer a significant reduction in energy use, the resulting bottom-line savings still might not be enough to justify a paybackdriven decision process. By adding HCL benefits to the savings calculations, designers can swing the decision pendulum strongly in favor of LEDs.

Stay ‘tuned’ for more… In other words, a single-minded approach to payback neglects the performance benefits a human-centric lighting plan can provide. Consider refiguring payback calculations by adding dollar values to represent potential performance boosts. One example would be to incorporate a $50 annual performance benefit into each tunable fixture’s payback calculations. Granted, CCT-tunable LED lamps and fixtures are still a bit of a novelty—especially those that reach up to daylight-appearing higher temperatures—but the technology has a bright future. With the technology becoming both more available and less expensive, this is a great time for designers and other specifiers to become more familiar with the concept of human-centric lighting. Tunable LEDs could provide productivity and comfort benefits that far outweigh the dollars-andcents saved in standard lighting-efficiency upgrades.

Study Time Human-centric lighting (HCL) is based on the theory that illumination at high correlated color temperatures (CCTs), incorporating wavelengths in the range of 460 nanometers (nm) to 490 nm, can help a room’s occupants stay more focused and engaged. This theory was put to the test last year in a fourth-grade California classroom, and both the students and their teacher found that high-CCT lighting improved their attentiveness and performance. Existing fl uorescent troffers were replaced with tunable fixtures from PlanLED that allow color temperature to be adjusted in a range from 2700K to 6500K. In two-week increments, the fixtures were preset to run at specifi ed temperature and dimming levels so the teacher and students could compare the settings:

ATTENTION, STUDENTS Quadrature 2 LED fixtures from Osram’s Siteco division were custom-fitted with blue and coldwhite LEDs to produce illumination similar to the color temperature of natural daylight to study the impact of such lighting on student performance at a German high school. Following these two-week testing periods, the teacher and students were informed about the theory behind the lighting and allowed to adjust color temperature and dimming as they wished. They also were given control of additional LED lighting set to an even higher 10,000K. These higher-temperature fixtures were separately controlled with a 30-minute timer, for use at the school day’s start, just after lunch and at other times when attentiveness was lagging. The results were defi nitive. Once they were able to adjust lighting levels as they wished, the teacher and students opted to maintain the tunable troffers at 6500K, with no dimming, for the entire day. The fixed 10,000K units became popular not just at the day’s start, but also especially during math lessons—in fact, the students will often remind the teacher to turn on these fixtures if she forgets to do so.

BRAND NAME HEALTHCARE

New digital media, increased competition and greater retail influences are all driving a surge of rebranding strategies among healthcare providers.

By Barbara Horwitz-Bennett, contributing writer

In the past, healthcare providers may have been able to get away with slapping a logo in their facility entranceway and lobby. This type of cursory branding strategy is no longer cutting it. “In a time where arguably more transparency exists than ever before regarding the quality of healthcare at a given institution, true brand integrity is easier to spot or dispel than ever,” observes Randy Guillot, AIA LEED AP, design principal, formerly of CannonDesign, Chicago. Driven by fierce competition, many healthcare organizations have come to realize the importance of establishing a branded interior design master plan. Such a plan creates the branding message that the organization desires to broadcast to its community, and provides both guiding principles

and overarching design concepts, which can be described as a sort of “toolkit.” “The toolkit goes well beyond furniture standards and color/finish palettes—which, over time, are inevitably discontinued and/or dated—and embraces interior architecture, forms, textures and lighting,” says Diana Kissil, AIA, principal, SmithGroupJJR, San Francisco. Looking at the bigger picture, Heather Flannery, CID, IIDA, EDAC, ASID, an associate with Hord Caplan Macht (HCM), Baltimore, explains that branding serves as the fi rst impression when patients walk through the door, aids patients along their journey through the facility and, most importantly, stays with patients once they exit the building.

MAKING AN IMPACT To help end-users navigate this process, Ana PintoAlexander, RID, IIDA, EDAC, principal and director of health group interiors at HKS, Dallas, instructs her designers to carefully listen to—and understand— the organization’s mission, vision and goals. Once accomplished, the architects and interior designers then integrate these principles into the design elements to help the healthcare providers tell their own story. For instance, if the hospital client is a religious organization, and a feeling of spirituality is important, Alexander says designers can employ lighting and calming effects. On the other hand, if the client is more scientific and research based, the team will go with a more simplistic and timeless design with clean lines.

A number of recent projects illustrate this process. Indiana University Health, for example, acquired Clarian Health; they then rebranded to become IU Health, and its first new facility—the IU Health Neuroscience Center of Excellence in Indianapolis—became an opportunity to better define this new entity and specifically determine how the architecture could reinforce the new identity and establish the kind of experience that IU wanted to reflect. Ultimately, CannonDesign was brought in to imagine the facility. Client goals included ease of access and parking; a high-tech, high-touch environment that put patients first; a visible connection to neurological research; and a fresh, exuberant exterior image. The architects did so with a dramatic

curve to front the building, inspired by the shape of neurons, while erratic lines, worked into a metal screen on the buildings’ side elevation, are bent to resemble electroencephalograms (EEG). Interiors also incorporate geometry, color and imagery from neuroscience research, including patterns mimicking cellular forms, and blocks of color, inspired by the vibrancy of PET and fMRI scans. The firm was challenged similarly in Minneapolis,

where another project, the Academic Care Center, also involved the merger of two organizations—the University of Minnesota Physicians Group and Fairview Hospital—into a new brand: “M Health.” As a result, the new entity’s facility was designed to reflect a more corporate image with amenity-rich staff spaces, fully networked touchdown spaces, and clinical collaboration zones. “This job allowed a complete redefinition of the care experience—from a near fortress of intimidation—to an open and inviting branded environment that has much more in common with an airport lounge than a healthcare setting,” reports Guillot. For example, “waiting rooms have been replaced with technology-rich lounge environments flooded with natural light.” Beyond mergers and acquisitions, healthcare designers are also busy helping larger companies

12 . 2015

1512APMOC2.indd 29

establish a consistent brand across multiple locations. This means creating spaces with a relatable identity and a distinguishable look so that a patient can easily recognize that they’ve entered the provider’s space, regardless of the neighborhood or city that they’re walking into. Case in point is Kaiser Permanente. HDR is currently working with the national operator to refine their outpatient delivery model. According to Abbie Clary, AIA, ACHA, regional director, healthcare with HDR Architecture, Chicago, by developing key platforms to shape the delivery system, the same concept of care delivery can be used to start the process, but can then be customized to the specific community. “This approach creates consistency across all Kaiser facilities around the country while still allowing them to connect more closely to the communities they serve,” says Clary.

RIDING THE EEG WAVE The building, and notably the north façade, was conceived using aesthetic metaphors. Bent to resemble electroencephalograms, or brain waves, the northern elevation is adorned with architectural fi ns, broadcasting a striking presence to a nearby highway while providing privacy. The west façade presents a sculptural form inspired by the shape of neurons.

Another noteworthy example, but on a smaller scale, involved Stantec’s design of three satellite outpatient primary care clinics for the Santa Clara County’s Valley Health Centers in California. Looking to create a branded experience through the standardization of a number of physical environmental features, the buildings are organized around the concept of a modular chassis with operationally identical features.“Incorporating the modular clinic, ancillary services—including pharmacy, lab, imaging, support services and the lobby—each building uses the same ‘kit of parts’ for both exterior design and interior fi nishes and aesthetic language,” explains Annie Coull, vice president, buildings, Stantec, San Francisco. “The resulting buildings express a strong branded identity with a common patient experience and a standardized operational model for caregiver effi ciency.”

TAKING A PAGE OUT OF RETAIL In working to better home in on their brands, healthcare organizations are taking a closer look at the retail and hospitality industries’ highly successful strategies for defining and executing effective branded strategies. Just like the retail industry has become a master at knowing consumers, particularly their demographics and spending habits, healthcare providers are starting to tap into that same data to offer improved accessibility and convenience, and to better tailor their facilities to their patrons. “Many retail corporations and product development corporations use ethnography, or social science, to observe those they are trying to sell to, and then create an approach that is tailored to

meet the needs and fill the gaps for the market they desire to serve,” relates Clary. “We are taking this approach with many of our clients.” Also observing this trend, SmithGroupJJR’s Dana Kissil is seeing a growing recognition of the importance of service, a reliance on technology to provide information and an emphasis on presenting organized, well-composed spaces. Meanwhile, Stantec’s Coull is seeing the retail infl uence express itself in the form of a more sophisticated, wide distribution of advertising in both print magazines, billboards and transit graphics, as well as TV with messages focusing on personal touch/top-notch care with better outcomes and leading edge medicine.

THE NEW DIGITAL MEDIUM In this world of mobile devices and social media, branding is simultaneously being guided into a whole new realm, meaning tried-and-true strategies must migrate toward alternative styles and approaches. For example, with branding messages migrating into mobile environments, this is forcing brand and logo expressions to become simpler and more concise. Typography and brand names are taking secondary importance to stronger colors and clarity—and the simplicity of a well-executed mark, which creates less confusion, according to Clary. As a result, many designers are rather excited about the way in which electronic branding is spilling back into the built environment. For instance, one newer digitally influenced interiors strategy Clary is using is to work with a family of materials that lend themselves to a variety of planes where shadow and light can do much of the visual work. “The miniaturization of electronics is also opening avenues in lighting and illumination that give the designer options to create impact that can be manipulated like never before,” says Clary. Relying less on logos and brand marks, designers are turning more to finishes, lighting, written words, sculpture and artwork, and executing these ideas through a more digital approach—which, according to Clary, brings the brand to life through a sophisticated and active use of storytelling. As for the verbal message itself, healthcare providers are simplifying this into one or two taglines, sometimes referred to as the “elevator pitch.” However, these taglines or slogan must be memorable and focused; this will also make it easier to interpret the message both graphically and architectural, instructs Kissil.

COORDINATED COLORS At Medstar Franklin Square Hospital Angelos Center for Lung Diseases and Digestive Diseases, Baltimore, Creating facility-wide design guidelines for materials, building palettes, furniture, and key design elements reinforce a healthcare system’s identity and create a familiar environment for patients and visitors.

Also related to the new digital medium is the way in which healthcare consumers are more actively using their personal devices for a range of features such as scheduling appointments, accessing patient records and health information, refilling prescriptions, and referencing facility maps and wayfi nding tools. As a result, “the design of websites and interfaces are critical to reinforce the provider’s brand. This includes strong graphics, ease of navigation, and access—all of which speak to familiarity and association for the customer with the brand’s quality, service and availability,” explains Coull.

THROWING A CURVE In defining Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s new brand for its outpatient care pavilion in downtown Chicago Cannon juxtaposed an organized geometry against curving forms to create an experience that reinforces the prestigious reputation of Northwestern Medicine, while emphasizing a bright, airy and inviting environment.

ECONOMIC AND ATTRACTIVE A healthy use of glazing combined with architectural precast helped the new facility match the colors and textures of other buildings on campus while creating a lighter aesthetic.

INSPIRATION: VERTICALITY OF EXPRESSION

GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICE One last thought on branding trends: According to HCM’s Flannery, the bottom line is that strong, brand-consistent spaces, as well as tailored amenity spaces, are helping healthcare providers better address the ongoing struggle to successfully recruit and retain quality staff.

32

1512APMOC2.indd 32

In the end, there are many reasons why healthcare organizations should be motivated to refine and upgrade their branding strategies. Ultimately, it all boils down to the fact that it makes for good business.

BRANDED IN HISTORY Branding at Northwestern, according to Guillot, follows the architectural language of academic Gothic architecture, such as the institution’s School of Medicine pictured above. “This is all about verticality of expression,” says the architect.

Precast Provides Thermally Efcient Envelope for Healthcare The University of Kentucky’s new Albert B. Chandler Hospital Pavilion had to have a high performance envelope that would improve energy efciency while harmonizing with the campus and shaving a year off the construction schedule. High performance precast concrete combined a continuous air and vapor barrier with continuous insulation into one efcient system. This provided a calculated performance R-value of R-26 and saved time, materials, and money. Precast also provided the aesthetic versatility to offer several nishes. High performance precast concrete provides the efciency you need.

THE 12TH ANNUAL

READERS’ CHOICE

Loop bike rack is a simple, sweeping circle

Pedestrian Architecture? If these bike racks, bollards and streetlights are any indication, I have to declare 2015 the Year of the Pedestrian. In analyzing this year’s AP50—the products that garnered the most attention among our readers in 2015—I’ve deduced that inquiries for perforated metals, site furnishings, pavers and windows/doors the likes of Nanawall, indicate an architectural trend that supports the use of passive technologies and views to nature. Certainly, the bike rack and exterior lighting products to the right support being outside.

“‘Pedestrian’ architecture may sound as ordinary as a walk in the park, but the benefits are quite extraordinary.” For further evidence of architecture connecting to nature, look no further than the winner of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats’ annual Urban Habitat Award: the plant-laden ParkRoyal hotel in Singapore. Other vegetative towers are making news: Singapore’s CapitaGreen and Italy’s Bosco Verticale—each which feature foliage on each floor. These projects certainly reflect a scientifically savvy method of effectively creating sanctuaries in urban habitats. Recent research by the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago suggests that our bodies biologically respond to natural features; specifically, to algorithms found in the jagged lines created by foliage, trees, stones or shorelines. In fact, according to the research, it only takes a 10-minute connection to nature, 2-3 times per week to reduce stress. That said, vegetative towers delivering natural filtered light, views and fresh air to its occupants simultaneously provide restorative health benefits—even on the 37th floor. So while “pedestrian architecture” may sound as ordinary as a walk in the park, the benefits are actually quite extraordinary—the same goes for the AP50; however, in this case, you may let your fingers do the walking.

MAKE A STATEMENT Recognizing the client’s desire for not yet another brick building, designers from William Rawn Associates and ACI-Boland Architects opted for a Dri-Design Wall Panel system in their plans for the new Bicknell Family Center for the Arts on the campus of Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. Panels are installed in a rain-screen system and can be specified from a broad palette of metal materials, colors, finishes and textures. For this project, designers chose four colors installed in a random, nonrepeating pattern. Circle 502

1512APDEC2.indd 60

The company recently consolidated corporate and R&D functions into a single 280,000-sq.-ft. facility. The chief goal was to enhance a unified corporate culture through architecture. “They really wanted to foster collaboration between the different groups and business entities while having all the business’ functions—headquarters, R&D and marketing—together,” says interior designer Ingrid Christensen, associate principal, IIDA, tvsdesign, Chicago. “There’s a certain synergy that makes this ideal for business.” In order to do this for Zebra , maker of the first barcode printer, the design team created café-style spaces on every floor where employees can gather, eat or collaborate. Conference rooms, break rooms and areas for spontaneous idea exchange are everywhere, and clad with writable surfaces, including Idea Paint. Employee wellness was another goal; beyond a fitness center, tvsdesign refreshed staircases with graphics to make them more appealing, while coffee stations were located in less convenient areas to encourage movement. Daylight also streams into the building, and no enclosed spaces along the perimeter allow natural light to reach just about every pocket of the five-story office building. In the end, by transforming their workplace to meet goals and growth, Christensen believes the tvsdesign team has created a real “workplace of the future” for the company.

One of her “favorite” products—here in black in the square wall cut-out in the center of photo—the Xorel Straie covering is virtually indestructable, according to Christensen. “I love to use this in high traffic areas.”

Green chair in the forefront. “A lot of the design is simple with punches of color, based on the contrast of the light and dark colors,” says Christensen. “Contrast, simplicity of form and punches of color create energy.”

The flooring in this more public area has the look and texture of a flat carpet, but the performance of a hard flooring. “Because it is a textured product it also helps with sound,” says Christensen.

Each floor is designated a different color. “Because the building has both east and south wings, we tried to facilitate wayfinding by keeping the east wings to blueish tints and the south wings in reddish colors, with the top floor being the darkest and the bottom floor being the lightest,” says the architect, known for her problem solving in dealing with corporate headquarters projects of all sizes and schedules.

The walls in the office lobby weren’t painted white or left untouched. Instead, they’re also clad in the Xorel Straie wall covering to create the fine sheen and depth of texture she was looking for. “It comes in so many colorways and textures and even looks good in white!” says Christensen.

The wood veneer backing of the Zebra corporate logo is made by “the process of fuming Eucalyptus, which makes it darker and creates a really cool depth with more of a linear graining,” says Christensen. “Part of why we chose this one is the idea of sustainability—Eucalyptus is a fast growing grass.”

26 Sustainable Sites (SS)

Collaborative Life Sciences Building Portland, Ore.

Possible Points 110 Possible Points 26

Sustainable design strategies include transformation of an existing brownfield site, stormwater management, atrium heat recovery and low-ventilation fume hoods. 8

Water Efficiency (WE)

Possible Points 10

Greater than 60% water savings is anticipated through a dual strategy of incorporating water-conserving plumbing fixtures with a rainwater reuse system. 20 Energy

Possible Points 35

CLSB is estimated to achieve a 45% energy use reduction compared to the LEED baseline. The building’s enhanced mechanical systems also play a big role in energy savings. 7

Materials (ME)

Possible Points 14

The team selected materials that are low-maintenance, durable and low in VOCs. In many cases, the team was also able to choose products containing a high recycled content, and products sourced regionally. Innovative material re-use includes salvaging oil drilling pipes for foundation piles. 9

Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Possible Points 15

Attention to indoor air quality is demonstrated through increased ventilation, pollutant source control and use of low-E materials. 6

Innovation and Design (ID)

Possible Points 6

Joining the resources of three major universities to share a single facility–versus each university creating its own—was possibly the project team’s greenest decision. 4

Regional Priority Credits

Possible Points 4

Located halfway between OHSU’s and PSU’s main campuses, the site is well-served by a streetcar line, bus lines, bike and pedestrian paths, and the aerial tram to OHSU’s main campus.

COLLABORATION IS KEY Located on a post-industrial, remediated riverfront brownfield site, the CLSB is an innovative model of interdisciplinary health sciences education, research, and education. SERA and CO Architects collaborated on this fast-track, multi-phase project; CO Architects provided programming and design leadership and SERA was the executive architect, providing leadership in project management, BIM integration and sustainability design. The design, construction and owner teams focused on delivering a LEED Platinum project on a tight timeline with high design goals. The team relied heavily on elec-

tronic documents during design, and also used all-electronic documentation during construction; they estimate that this saved the project more than $1.5 million dollars in printing costs alone. The use of BIM by all design and construction team members allowed for careful coordination of the building systems prior to construction. Early in the design process, the team decided to join the resources of three major universities to create a single building. Since each institution’s individually proposed spaces would not have been continuously occupied, the decision to share a single facility was possibly the greenest decision the project team made.

FOSTERING CONNECTION As part of a 20-year Facilities Master Plan, the CLSB is the first project on OHSU’s Schnitzer Campus at Portland’s South Waterfront. The adjoining Skourtes Tower houses OHSU’s School of Dentistry clinical, training, and research spaces. The two buildings together comprise approximately 650,000-sq.-ft. of new construction in twelve stories. Interior glass walls foster “research and teaching on display,” allowing occupants and pedestrians to view the activity in labs and classrooms. The atrium offers dynamic connections between program elements through connecting bridges and informal study areas for students. CLSB has a number of site design features that contribute to urban ecology, as well as to improved air

68

1512APALD.indd 68

and water quality. These features include 24,540 sq. ft. of green roofs with additional integrated flow-through planters that absorb and treat rainfall run-off. A rainwater harvesting strategy using a 44,505gallon underground tank lets CLSB capture 700,000 gallons of rain annually, which is reused to flush toilets in the north tower and central atrium. The south tower, which is primarily used for medical simulation, had water quality restrictions and instead was developed to minimize storm water runoff via a green roof. This reduces the need to transport stormwater to wastewater treatment plants, saving offsite pumping energy. The project diverted 85% of its construction waste away from landfills—more than 1000 tons of material was recycled or reused instead of being landfilled.

ACCENT ON EFFICIENCY The team specified KS Shadowline panels in 2-in. thickness with a Driftwood finish for the building envelope; the insulated metal panels (IMPs) provide continuous insulation for energy efficiency. To accent the panels, designers used Fin panels with a Charcoal finish throughout the Sunwapta Centre.

INSULATED METAL PANELS

Form, Function—and Fins A three-building Edmonton commercial property increases energy efficiency with IMPs. CHALLENGE: Sunwapta Centre is a versatile commercial property located in an active industrial and retail sector of Edmonton’s northwest region. The Centre is made up of three buildings on 22 acres totaling 407,000 sq. ft.. It was designed to accommodate a variety of commercial needs including retail, industrial, and service providers requiring flexible spaces ranging from 5,000 to 200,000 sq. ft. INFLUENCE: For year-round energy efficiency in Edmonton’s temperate climate, it was important to create a building envelope that provides continuous insulation for each structure at the Sunwapta Centre. Metal panels provide thermal performance and airtightness, with high R-value and low thermal bridging, resulting in energy cost savings of as much as 30% over traditional multi-part built-up systems. This not only saves on operational costs but also reduces the carbon footprint for the lifespan of the buildings. Project: Sunwapta Centre Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Architect: Thermo Design Insulation

SOLUTION: The Sunwapta Centre construction team chose Kingspan’s insulated metal panels (IMPs). The team specified KS Shadowline panels in 2-in. thickness with a Driftwood finish for the building envelope. The KS Shadowline panel system gives architects and builders the design flexibility and options to create the looks they want combined with the functionality they require.

KarrierPanels combine the thermal benefits of lightweight insulated metal panels with pleasing aesthetics.

KarrierFin, another Kingspan product line, was also used in the construction of the Centre. KarrierFin is a hidden fixed architectural accent system used to achieve flat faces, sharp corners, and a variety of other shapes. The KarrierFin system integrates seamlessly with all of Kingspan’s KS Series, MF Series, and Optimo Series panels in both horizontal and vertical applications. Designers used Fin panels with a Charcoal finish throughout the Sunwapta Centre; they add both contrast and functionality, as the KarrierFins are able to sit directly in panel joints, eliminating the need for through screws in the panels.

LIGHTING

A Better, Safer Light in the Night LED lighting lends security to hospital parking facility.

CHALLENGE: As an award-winning Level 1 trauma

center, Presence Saint Francis Hospital, Evanston, Ill., encourages family involvement in the patient healing process through an open visitation policy. With 24/7 visitation, the parking facility at Presence Saint Francis has a steady flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The garage is always open but has not always been well lit.

“When you go into a parking garage, yellow light does not give a sense of safety and security.” INFLUENCE: The inadequate lighting reduced visibility in many areas and did not convey the sense of a safe environment. CRITERIA: The parking garage originally had yel-

low high-pressure sodium fixtures, which did not provide adequate lighting for visitors. “When you

go into a parking garage, yellow light does not give a sense of safety and security,” says Joe Stark, regional director of support services for Presence Saint Francis and Saint Joseph Hospitals. Stark worked with Grainger Industrial Distributors to find the best lighting solution for the garage. SOLUTION: VG Series parking structure and Edge area LED luminaires, both from Cree, provided optimal light quality, instilling a greater sense of security to hospital staff and visitors, and delivered reduced maintenance and operations costs.

“Nothing looked good until we put in the sample VG Series pendant mount LED luminaire. The light output, the fixture itself, the different coloration of the lumens—it was completely different, from yellow to white,” notes Stark.

LOW LIGHTS Edge area LED luminaires automatically lower output after seven minutes of no occupancy, saving energy.

LOW MAINTENANCE Light maintenance in the garage has gone from ongoing to minimal, improving operational efficiency and freeing the maintenance staff for other projects.

The VG Series LED luminaires lower output from 100% to 25% after seven minutes of no occupancy detection, which qualified the Presence Saint Francis project for a large rebate from ConEdison.

CLADDING

Colorful, Cost-Effective Cladding Solution When URI opened three new residence halls, they didn’t need to sacrifice good looks for high performance and money-saving energy efficiency.

CHALLENGE: When the University of Rhode Island started the largest building project in its history, cost and aesthetics were important factors when choosing exterior cladding. Reinvestment of dollars saved by reduced energy costs is a practical, cost effective way to ensure a structure’s long-term efficacy.

Architect Rick Bouchard, S/L/A/M Collaborative, says “it was really a combination of aesthetics and economics—Dryvit Outsulation is much more cost efficient than traditional clay brick, and its light weight allowed us to save money on the structural elements of the buildings.”

INFLUENCE: Eddy, Garrahy and Wiley halls are the first new residence halls to open on the Kingston Campus since 1971. Giving them a fresh look was very important.

In addition, there are aesthetic benefits. “One of the main factors that lead us to select Dryvit was the color options,” says Chris Browning, general contractor for Gilbane Building Company. “The architect created numerous electronic renderings using different color combinations and also requested mockups of the finishes that we reviewed on site.”

CRITERIA: These three new buildings provide 800 new on-campus housing rooms, and represent a crucial factor in the growth of the university. It was only fitting to choose a sustainable, energy efficient and cost effective cladding for the new facilities. SOLUTION: The construction was completed in the

fall of 2006; builders used 45,000 sq. ft. of Dryvit Outsulation MD on the expansion. Dryvit Outsulation Systems can be up to 84% more energy efficient than other common claddings, including brick, glass, concrete, wood and masonry. This energy efficiency translates into annual savings that average between 20% and 30% for every year the building is occupied.

“We chose Outsulation MD for the residence halls for multiple reasons; it was really a combination of aesthetics and economics.”

The Outsulation MD system also provides three lines of defense against water intrusion: the combination of reinforced base coat and finish; the grooved expanded polystyrene (EPS) with drainage track and vent assembly; and Backstop NT, an air and waterresistive barrier. The dollars saved by using Dryvit products will compound over the typical 50-year life of the buildings and can be reinvested in technological upgrades, systematic maintenance, or in new projects.

LOOKIN’ GOOD Because Eddy, Garrahy, and Wiley Halls were the first new residence halls on the URI campus in decades, good looks were also important.

Under One Roof Curved roof creates inviting health center in Alabama.

CHALLENGE: The Western Health Center in Midfield, Ala., provides comprehensive medical care for under-served populations in Jefferson County. The two-story, 78,000-sq.-ft. center needed to consolidate three older health clinics into an attractive, more centrally located facility. The expansive site has walking and biking trails available to staff and the public; the goal was to create an aesthetically pleasing, inviting facility for the public and employees. INFLUENCE: The design was driven by the Department of Health’s desire to provide fresh, inviting health centers that are patient-focused and employee-friendly, says Tom Kidwell, Senior Associate and Project Architect, Birchfield Penuel & Assocs., Birmingham, which created the design. CRITERIA: The building’s material palette included adhered masonry veneer and precast concrete, in addition to standing seam metal roofing panels and wall panels. “The materials play together in a fun way to make the project interesting and inviting,” Kidwell says.

Nearly 140 Tite-Loc panels were installed, with the majority of them being 80 ft. long and curved; the project also used 8000 sq. ft. of Reveal panels.

SOLUTION: Highlighting the design is a contemporary, barrel vault roof that uses 10,000 sq. ft. of Petersen Aluminum’s Tite-Loc panels finished in Cool Color Cardinal Red. The mechanically seamed, 2-in. standing seam panels were installed on a selfadhered under-laying membrane on 6-in. polyisocyanurate insulation on an exposed acoustical metal deck on sloped bowstring trusses.

Builders also used Tite-Loc panels to roof a gazebo in a pecan tree grove on the site that was spared during construction, as well as on a curved canopy at the main entrance. The design team even brought the standing seam panels and masonry veneer into the interior of the two-story reception area. In addition to the roof panels, 8000 sq. ft. of Reveal panels in Sierra Tan were used to clad exterior walls.

BUILT TO LAST

In transforming the former Sandpiper Restaurant in Naples, Fla., into the new Marker 36 dining establishment, designers with Dyehouse Comeriato (also of Naples) created a more permanent structure that still blends with the surrounding beach. Now, instead of a fabric awning, the roof is formed from aluminum Tite-Loc panels that meet local wind-load requirements. Finished in a cool Bone White color, the roof also will stand up to corrosive saltwater spray.

3 CHURCH SAYS ‘HAIL, YES’ TO COMPOSITE After their second copper roof was destroyed by hail in a 10-year period, leadership at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in San Angelo, Texas, decided a change in material was needed. Now the 128-year-old building features an equally traditional-looking roof fabricated from a slate-look polymer that can stand up to severe weather. The Aberdeen blend of five tile colors complements the church’s stone exterior walls.

last detail: architectural leader

Huang is popular with start-ups because of her innovative, outof-the-box thinking about using found materials in unique applications.

Dara Huang’s Innovative Thinking Clients with an entrepreneurial spirit line up for Huang’s ability to deliver designs that are an authentic reflection of her clients’ unique DNA, delivered on time, on budget and with a materials twist.

Dara Huang’s vibrant voice and inspiring energy resonate over the long-distance line from London. U.S. born, she headed overseas as part of graduate school, eventually earning an internship with Herzog and De Meuron. Later, she found herself in London gaining a number of experiences that pointed her back to architecture. But even though she had an extensive CV for a 20-something, she lacked confidence. “I felt really lost,” she says. Knowing she had to make a move, her baptism by fire—launching a company—an explosive success. “I learned what my strengths were very quickly and hired the people to cover my weakness.”

80

ARCHITECTURAL PRODUCTS

1512APLSD2.indd 80

Huang’s honesty is something that resonates with clients. She is particularly popular with start-ups because of her out-ofthe-box thinking in using found materials in unique applications. For example, at London start-up AnalogFolk, in the room that serves as the heart of the organization, Huang envisioned miniature Buddhas she stumbled upon at a yoga studio. She stuffed them into recycled jam jars and hung them from the ceiling, creating a unique alternative to ceiling treatment and luminaires. Why did it strike home? “Everything has an identity,” explains Huang. “In this case, they are helping people receive information in a new

way—digitally—and so they took a bunch of old things and transformed them to use them in a new way. The design expresses the juxtaposition of Analog and Folk.” This knack for the unexpected keeps Huang in demand and she was asked back to help AnalogFolk create a sense of arrival and connection to the rest of the office when the operation expanded. “The storefront space is like a window into their complex minds,” says Huang. The new entrance welcomes off-thestreet inquiries and went over so well, that they edited the design by frosting the glass to maintain the flow of business despite curious passersby.

Dara Huang’s wildly successful endeavor, Design Haus Liberty, has grown from Huang and one intern in 2013 to the 25 people it is today.

One of Huang’s top client is AnalogFolk, a digitally-oriented company that needed a connection to an analog world, namely people. Dara Huang’s unusual touch made that happen.

DESIGNED WITH

DISTINCTION

WHY DRI-DESIGN? Distinction isn’t just about standing apart from the crowd, but is more about elevating yourself above the crowd. Dri-Design’s nearly unlimited palette of design options, which includes materials, colors, finishes, textures, etc., make Dri-Design unique. What makes Dri-Design distinct, is that it provides this unique range of design options, in a system that installs and performs even better than it looks. A combination of form and function that is truly distinct. • No sealants, gaskets or butyl tape means no streaking and no maintenance for owners. • Not laminated or a composite material, so panels will never delaminate. • At Dri-Design, we have a strict policy of recycling and creating products that the world can live with. • Fully tested to exceed ASTM standards and the latest AAMA 508-07. • Available in a variety of materials, colors, finishes, dimensions and textures.
