Key Considerations: Integrated Illuminated Railing Systems Demand for LED-illuminated handrails has increased exponentially as architects, specifiers and building owners strive to meet green building requirements without sacrificing design. For architects, performance, appearance and safety are critical to product selection in the design phase, while a specifier must take into account numerous technical aspects associated with the system. Following are key considerations for specifying the right illuminated railing systems from the right supplier, to make every installation a long-term success.

Serviceability and Replaceability Railings, like any product, contain a number of components with varying life cycles. It is critical to have a clear understanding of predicted life cycles and how to effectively maintain them for optimal performance. This proactive approach will minimize maintenance while driving a strong return on product investment. To optimize your client’s investment, specify railing systems that have replaceable components as well as wiring and parts that can be easily accessed.

Overall System Configuration Power supply is critical for railing systems with integrated lighting, and is a factor that can easily be overlooked during specification. It is important to specify a railing system from a supplier that provides customizable options for the individual needs of your installation. Two options that optimize design integrity, functionality and system flexibility are remote and integrated enclosures. Remote enclosures are designed to hold multiple supporting components or accessories, such as power supplies, emergency battery backups, fusing or other communication controls. It is typically a NEMA-rated enclosure in which to mount and access equipment critical to optimizing system performance. Conversely, an integrated enclosure is built directly into the railing system to provide a seamless design esthetic while also maximizing functionality. The key is to find a supplier who can provide either option, allowing for a result customized to your application.

Vandal Resistant By nature, railings are located in high-traffic and high-abuse environments, making them vulnerable to potential vandalism and misuse, which poses a real concern for maintenance, appearance and system longevity. Engage with a manufacturer that provides code compliant structures and lighting

Take a deeper look at the factors that lie beneath the surface to meet both form and function. It takes a planning on the front end. specifically designed to withstand vandalism, such as impact and tamper resistance. A linear light source should be designed with high strength cast mounting components and tamper resistant fasteners that prevent malicious removal. Point source lighting should be specified with a mounting system that resists both pull out or push in. A dedicated tool to remove the light fixtures for service should be provided by the manufacturer and not readily available to the public. The fixtures for either linear or point source lighting should have a high IK (impact) rating that will resist direct blows or severe contact by vandals.

Light Quality and Distribution Options While there’s not a single answer that satisfies every project need, you want to find a partner that provides a full line of options and allows you to specify the system characteristics for your application. These are output performance considerations: Correlated color temperature (CCT), an LED source that has a higher color temperature (5000K)

Symmetric or asymmetric output—Directional output of the fixture’s beam spread from the handrail can illuminate specific areas to add aesthetic emphasis, uniformity or an increase in the visible area for safety. Codes and Recommended Practice Illuminated railing crosses into two separate sections of codes, both as handrail—which is listed in the miscellaneous metals section, and as lighting—which is listed in the electrical section. When it comes to codes that impact the structural and illumination aspects of a system, it is critical to have a partner who is bilingual in those codes. An experienced supplier for both will help meet code requirements in almost any application and assist with creating a solution that enhances the site.

On any given day in the U.S., about one in 25 hospital patients has at least one HAI. In 2011, an estimated 75,000 U.S. patients died after contracting an HAI. Research shows that floors often get contaminated by pathogens that can cause HAIs. Ease of cleaning and the ability to prevent growth and transmission of molds, bacteria and other pathogens are important factors when choosing surface options for healthcare facilities.

When judging the capital efficiency of a floor, wall or ceiling surface, it’s important to consider hard costs such as the initial costs (including purchase price, delivery and installation) and the costs to maintain the surface over its lifetime and the building’s lifetime. Over the life of the facility, the costs of surface maintenance can easily be 10 times higher than the original installation costs.

Quality When selecting the interior floor, wall or ceiling solution: find out if the supplier uses a quality management system such as ISO 9001, which assures uniformity in manufacturing and adherence to a product’s published specs. Verify the installation crew has been trained to install the selected product. Look for labels indicating the product has been independently certified to internationally recognized quality standards. Ask about options to extend the supplier’s quality commitment and assure quality performance over a longer period of time.

Maintenance To help minimize and prevent the spread of infection from spills, it is important to select finishes for floors, walls and ceilings that enable effective cleaning. Incompatibility between a cleaning agent and a finish may have an adverse effect on the physical properties of the finish, resulting in unwanted surface changes such as softening or hardening, reduced flexibility, cracking, flaking and discoloring.

Comfort Floors, wall and ceilings can have a big impact on patient and staff comfort. Absorption. Flooring that reduces noise contributes to a quieter environment, which has been linked to improved patient satisfaction. Resiliency refers to a floor covering’s ability to spring back after being compressed. Floors with higher resiliency feel soft and comfortable underfoot and help prevent body fatigue but can be more difficult for staff to push hospital beds and other heavy rolling loads over. Architects Flex [Artistic] Muscle With a boost from the maker-movement, craft has become an essential component of the design vernacular. Overcoming anemic budgets, the revived place-maker movement boosts buildings, cities, neighborhoods and mega projects to icon status. Once orphaned by architecture, art has been newly embraced by the practice as an invaluable component of design. Recent developments illustrate that art can be used strategically to express place, beautify and activate spaces. After many years of austerity, architects with art budgets seeking new methods of planning art in the built environment attended “Art in Architecture,” an AIA accredited CEU by Napa Valley-based Gordon Huether at NeoCon. He targeted methods of best practices for integrating art into interior design and architectural spaces. Huether argues that thoughtful, well-integrated art makes for emotive, and therefore, memorable experiences. His latest commission is a series of structurally integrated art installations at the Salt Lake City International Airport. The terminal, currently one of the largest construction projects in the United States, is scheduled for completion in 2020. In addition to his art installations, Huether is guiding the development of a comprehensive art master plan for the airport.

Leveraging charging stations as an opportunity for thoughtful art, SDA’s (Synthesis Design and Architecture) charging station design for Volvo, Pure Tension, is winner of an AIA Small Projects Award 2014. After analyzing the greatest areas of solar incidence, SDA’s flamboyant design embodies as a space-age carport. “We wanted to challenge the notion of solar power as something that is an additive piece of engineering infrastructure, says Synthesis founder and principal, Alvin Huang, “The solar panels became a design feature and design driver, rather than something applied after the fact. The goal was to balance utility with beauty.” The firm’s solar panel design calculated and analyzed what orientations of its 252 flexible solar panels would capture the greatest average amount of sunlight annually. The unique form’s solar panel configuration may be calculated on a specific location, making these EV charging stations a unique opportunity to create an iconic image for a Living Campus, a 2030 District or a forward-thinking Silicon-Valley city.

A Walk in the Park

A modern take on the conventional sculpture garden is Marc Fornes’ and theverymany’s Chrysalis Amphitheater in Merriweather Park, Columbia, Md. The pavilion represents functional art, as it is empty 95% of the time, but activates the space and creates wonder for joggers and strollers. At the same time it offers a viable entertainment venue for performers with ample gathering space for the public. The design reflects a computational design on the concept of pleated inflation to provide a lightweight structural metal pavilion with generous spans that remain robust enough to support heavy-duty concert accouterments, such as amplification equipment and lights. Chrysalis’ bright green coloration at once stands out and is camouflaged in a forest of green, depending on the viewer, says Fornes. “The narrative of coloration starts by considering the surrounding palette, and pushing colors to a certain point of artificiality… This play of Signal vs. Camouflage can make a project stand out in its environment while at once blending in appropriately—depending on one’s perception.”

Project: The Canyon, Salt Lake City Airport, Utah Artist: Gordon Huether The artist’s largest art installation, “The Canyon,” will be integrated on both walls—east and west—of the new central airport terminal. It evokes the city landscape and spans 362 ft., and is constructed of composite fabric and aluminum tubing. The work consists of 412 individual tensile membrane fins.

Janet Echelman’s Impatient Optimist weaves Complex layers into the urban landscape. The sculptural form is derived from visualizing the shape of a day; she took photos of the Seattle sky every five minutes for a full day. Her studio analyzed the color data and graphed the results radially to generate the basis for the form.

Engineering/Theatrical/Lighting: ARUP Specialty Fabrication: Zahner The Chrysalis project creates an emblematic and experiential design while satisfying the standard box dimensions required by a theater typology. The answer was developed as a collection of cascading arches that vary in size, function, and also provide a structural system. The largest arch is structured for official events, including musical performances and the requirements of heavy stage equipment and theatrical lighting rigs.

The colorful expression of Chrysalis is part of an evolution from mostly black and white projects, to some of the boldest color signatures in art and design; “Coloration” has been a developing aspect of the firm’s computational design over many years, says Fornes, “Color is subjective, submitting to fashion and trends. To choose a color and then stand by it for years can take a toll on an architect. Hence, a lot of white, black, and sometimes primary colors.” With projects now expressing such vibrant coloration, theverymany is constantly researching and testing to push boundaries, devising some of the industry’s most indestructible coating technologies. Some of its projects are cured up to three times during the process, as the result of having to address so many different parameters, including resistance to corrosion, resistance of the colors in time, possibility of touch up, warranty, speed of production, constant application across larger surfaces or sets of parts, says Fornes. In the case of the amphitheater for example, one of the drivers was how to optimize and industrialize the cost of families of colors across so many parts. “By now we could certainly publish an entire PhD on colors as finishes type and processes.”

Tactical Art Art can be leveraged in an emerging development, making residents take note of a space previously undeveloped or a space that is being

re-allocated to another zoning purpose, for instance, Chicagobased 555 International is painting new façades on abandoned warehouses, alley-ways or parking lots of the industrial North Branch, a 3.7-mile stretch along the Chicago River, to signal its transformation into a hip, dense mixeduse enclave. Working with several local artists, 555 International’s founder, James Geier, has curated an “urban art collection” that provides the North Branch neighborhood with its own brand identity and infuses the area with the energy and excitement of anticipation. The artists—Hebru Brantley, Sick Fisher, Max Sansing, Ruben Aguirre and ROA—have been establishing their largescale murals throughout the neighborhood, attracting attention from locals, tourists and street-art enthusiasts. When buildings do not present themselves as canvas, art may find an opportunity to activate airspace space between them. Art by Janet Echelman literally weaves buildings together. Echelman’s gigantic woven installation dubbed “Impatient Activists,” knits building, sky and landscape together over a central plaza designed by landscape architecture firm Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN) at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As it hangs from the buildings, the color-changing catenary art creates a colorful apparition hovering in the sky.

Design Meets Time designjunction—a curated show of interior design for the industry by the industry set in challenging industrial spaces— showcased a competition entered by emerging designers from around the world during the annual London Design Festival. This year, the first edition of the inaugural Rado Star Prize, a design competition sponsored by the Swiss timepiece brand, in conjunction with designjunction at the London Design Festival attracted many world-class entries in a variety of manifestations such as art, furniture and technology. Announced this spring, the short-list consists of 10 finalists of which the 0.6 Chair was declared the winner of the Rado Star Prize by the jury panel. This year’s theme: design meets time, was expressed by the following entries.

0.6 CHAIR BY JOACHIM FROMENT Star prize winner: the 0.6 Chair is a robust, and long-lasting dining or café chair with an efficient and simple production process. Using a new process of laminating wood, a sandwich of wood veneer and carbon fiber reduces the thickness of the chair to 0.6 cm. By using a mold in two parts, the manufacturing time and the amount of material are reduced, minimizing the environmental impact of the chair and its production.

Dubbed Skywater-X, the new drinking water technology is an entrant to the Water Abundance XPrize, a competition launched by the UN to alleviate water scarcity and help communities around the globe access safe drinking water easily. Of the 98 teams from 25 countries vying for the XPrize, Sywater-X is at an advantage, as its technology has already been field tested in humanitarian aid and disaster situations. “We believe that water is a fundamental human right and to capture water from the atmosphere is a great step toward the democratization of water. We are very excited about participating in the XPrize Water Abundance Challenge,” says Hertz, who has been working for more than two years with the co-inventor of Skywater, Richard Groden from Island Sky Corp. Hertz’ ability to coordinate efforts among Groden, who holds some of the earliest patents on Atmospheric Water Generation, and a multi-national, interdisciplinary group from academia and industry enabled them to make to make rapid advancements on a unique technology called Adiabatic Distillation.

Process. The process begins with a fan forcing air through an enclosed air passage duct, which is formed to allow for a continuous circulation pattern. This warm, humid air is filtered and sent to the first cooling element for condensation. A cooling element held at a temperature below the dew point causes a portion of the vapor in the air to convert into liquid water, allowing the air to reach 100% relative humidity. Next, the air stream passes across the surface of the second cooling element, operated at a temperature below the freezing point of water. This ensures the collection of a very substantial percentage of the remaining water within the air stream. Before reaching the heating element, the air retains 100% relative humidity, though at a much cooler temperature. The heating element then drastically increases the temperature of the air, in turn, decreasing the relative humidity. Water formed between the cooled surfaces is collected and treated with ozone for sanitization. Finally, it is filtered through activated carbon to produce potable water.

Q: How many people can one unit provide daily water to in a public-use setting?

DAVID HERTZ: We have a machine that can make 30 gallons per day; another that makes 75 gallons per day; another that makes 150 gallons per day and another that makes 300 gallons per day. So whatever the public use setting would require, we have a machine for that.

Q: Is it a technology that governments will subsidize in order to provide it to their citizens? Or, is it actually a cost effective and affordable water source for off-grid homes and communities?

DAVID HERTZ: Skywater is an economical solution for areas of water scarcity or water quality concerns especially when combined with alternative energy solutions like solar or biogasification. It’s a technology that governments and nonprofits will be able to subsidize and has been used world wide for disaster relief in India, Africa, South America and elsewhere. Skywater is available to everyone from governments, emergency relief organizations, large and small businesses, hospitals, schools and residential areas or individuals who want to be water self-reliant.

Greene Science Center, designed by Renzo Building Workshop, is located at the Manhattanville Campus, the new urban campus of Columbia University. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute and will provide a platform for neuroscience researchers to engage in research and collaboration and interaction. CLT Answers the Call Efficient to erect, and offering seismic, thermal and acoustic benefits, CLT, believes a major developer will become the “sweet spot” for 6-to-12-story structures. International developer and builder Lendlease has a partnership with the U.S. Army to develop guest hotels for military personnel. For the past seven years, it has been renovating or constructing such facilities, but took a completely different tack on one of their most recent projects for a Candlewood Suites hotel in Redstone Arsenal/Huntsville, Ala. There, because they were facing significant labor shortages, the developer turned to CLT—crosslaminated timber—as a means to construct the facilities quickly. According to Jeff Morrow, program manager, Timber and Innovation Group for Lendlease, the company’s Australian branch had already successfully experimented with the material as a structural system, constructing a 10-story project, so Morrow said they decided to try it in the U.S. on this 92-room project. Typically, to do a hotel of this size, Morrow said it takes 26 carpenters and roughly 16 to 18 weeks using metal studs. “We did it in 11 weeks with 11 laborers,” said Morrow. Created from Nordic Engineered wood, in panels, typically 8 ft. × 50 ft. in dimension, the CLT panels, beyond labor savings, provided other benefits. First, in met both ATF standards for anti-terrorism and seismic activity; it also proved extremely effective as an acoustic damper. There were also thermal benefits, as Morrow said they found significant reduction in air infiltration using the 4-in. to 5-in.-thick CLT walls, which were augmented with rigid foam board. Despite these benefits, Morrow admits the use of CLT remains a challenge in getting approval from local fire marshals still suspicious of wood’s susceptibility to fire.

THE SWEET LIFE The hotel, ultimately, was clad in brick, and finished with drywall inside, but Morrow says virtually any cladding material can be used. In his opinion, in the near future, 6-to12-story structures will become the “sweet spot” for CLT as a structural system.

PARKING STRUCTURE, HOLLAND Adjacent to the Zutphen Rail Station in Holland, the park-and-ride facility accommodates 375 cars and 600 bikes in a structure that combines galvanized columns with wooden slats. MoederscheimMoonen Architects mounted the slats at different angles. The longer slats are fitted with red steel strips. In the evening, they are accented with vertical LED strips, creating a sculptural effect.

and myriad forms of technology. Stakeholders in assigning a façade’s role in the life of a structure are numerous: owners, architects, engineers, planners, municipal representatives, consultants and the users, those that observe the façade from the

outside, and those that live, work and perform roles of all modes inside. Because the outer surface of a building literally affects the urban environment along its entire perimeter, it assumes a more active role in addition to its already self-centered purpose of encapsulating the

building. Elements, forces and materials acting and influencing the enclosure design are many. Opaque, framed masonry, architectural concrete, natural stone, transparent curtainwall, metals and wood have inherent strengths and weaknesses,

depending on the behavior of the building’s structural system. A multi-technology approach has the role as a prime driver of function, visual aesthetics, performance requirements and response to climate conditions. Designers are incorporating virtual

Crystal Palace (1851) is an early example of a mass-produced, pre-fabricated building with thin enclosures that were separate from the structure. In 1884, Chicago’s Home Life Insurance Building by William LeBaron Jenney had no loadbearing walls; all materials hung on the metal

skeleton. In 1891, the Monadnock Building in Chicago became the tallest loadbearing building with a height of 17 stories. Supporting stone slabs at the bottom of the building are 6-ft. deep, tapering to 18 in. at the top with cast wroughtiron bracing.

By 1904, Daniel Burnham’s Reliance Building in Chicago contained elevators, curtainwalls and a wind-braced frame. The 21-story Lever House of 1952 and United Nations Building, also 1952, featured heat absorbing double-pane curtainwall glazing, and

Façade Materials Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) is a lightweight pre-cast material that references a record of high-performance. GFRC that is 0.75-in. thick and weighs eight pounds. Bottom line benefits include savings in steel support structure and fewer installers needed. 

Neolith was demonstrated as resistant to scratching, fire, ice and freezing, weighing 3 lb/sq. ft., it is available in slabs cut to size at the site. 

Larger-sized glass panels, up to 12 ft. and over, are noted as especially applicable to mixed-use buildings. An analysis was presented of the 54-story 181 Fremont Street building, San Francisco. Designed by Heller Manus Architects, it will be the tallest such structure west of the Mississippi. One Vanderbilt in New York City will be a 1000-ft.-tall glass tower, across from Grand Central Station. Architects are Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF). 

Low-tech strategies provide shade and promote breeze in adjacent areas while filtering air through the structure. Principles from these studies can contribute to the development of building façades in which the surface forms and promotes 

CORNELL RESIDENTIAL TOWER, NEW YORK CITY The 26-story tower on Roosevelt Island, in Manhattan, is the largest and tallest building in the U.S. that meets Passive House standards. Constructed with a prefabricated metal panel system, the facade features a coating of a light-changing paint that shifts from white to champagne depending on the angle of reflection off the surrounding East River. It is part of the first phase of the campus that to encourage a national hub for technology. The building’s Passive House certification met the six key factors with its south-facing siting, compact shape, proper enclosure, a low-energy HVAC system, energyefficient appliances and lighting, and user friendliness.

FAENA FORUM GARAGE, MIAMI Spanning two city blocks between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Creek Waterway in Miami, Faena Forum is comprised of a cylindrical arts and performance hall, cuboid hotel, and parking structure. The renovation of the c. 1939 Atlantic Beach Hotel, carried out by the architectural firm of OMA, makes an artistic statement with irregularly shaped windows set into a white concrete façade.

Israel Berger, chairman of Vidaris, consultants, focused his comments on the need to bring codes up-to-date for glass façades. “California and New York codes are the most advanced in the country,” he said. “There is an urgent need to re-examine the relationship of glass to today’s building industry practices,” Berger stated. He cited that assurance against fogging be increased from 10 years to 30 or more years.

Where They Are Going Dynamic façades are a current phenomenon aimed at minimizing energy consumption. Double skins have given way to usable interstitial spaces. Nanotechnology is predicted to make skins more environmentally responsive. New materials will reduce the weight of façades while improving their performance. Building envelope and façade design, currently a hot topic in Europe, will inevitably be influenced by the use of smart and low-energy systems. Thomas Auer of Transsolar Klima

Engineering, an international climate engineering firm, believes that, on a material level and in addition to selfventilation, the skin of a building can perform much like a dehumidifier, drawing moisture out the air and even generating water for various uses. “Simple material combinations such as silica coatings can enhance the behavior of some materials to have a local effect on an integrated intelligent façade system,” he says. He gives as an example a product by Alcoa Architectural Products called “EcoClean,”

which he describes as “almost smog-eating. With a coating of titanium dioxide on an aluminum surface, the hydrophilic surfaces allow water to cascade off rather than bead up, self-washing the surface of particulate matter and other types of smog.” A collection of selfhealing concrete technologies is undergoing testing. One example is Materials for Life (M4L) involving researchers from the School of Engineering at the University of Cardiff, Wales, where a team of specialists is

investigating three types of self-healing concrete: one with shape-memory polymers activated by electrical current; one with healing agents made from organic and inorganic compounds; and another with capsules containing bacteria and healing agents. The goal is autonomous infrastructure for roads, tunnels, bridges and buildings that can repair

themselves without human intervention. Sunbreak, a shading option recently devised by NBBJ, offers users the possibility of total environment control thanks to a mobile app for Android and iPhone. It folds or unfolds a series of sunshades depending on the time of day. Through sensors, it can react to the presence of people in the room or the proximity of clouds.

From Curtainwall to Curtains I’ll admit I rave about NeoCon every year being my favorite work-related activity, but a close second is assembling our annual Product Innovations Awards. Just like an obsessed material librarian, I become giddy at the prospect of product discovery—and am eternally grateful for the opportunity to do it every day for my job. That said, in the past I typically investigated products in a vacuum. That was the case, until my first excursion with Tile of Spain to examine products at Cevisama, the Iberian Peninsula’s ceramic tile convention. Exploring the country made a cultural and anthropological impact on my product perspectives, but it was observing the reactions of the architects I was traveling with that made the investigation exponentially interesting. This brings me full circle to the PIA competition and my gratitude to the talented architects and designers who served on the PIA jury. They truly show us fellowship by providing professional perspectives on product entries; in fact, a couple of the architects and designers on that fateful trip to Spain serve on the PIA jury today. I also must give a special shout out to HDR Architecture, which resoundingly answered our call for jurors. Furthermore, I feel obligated to

fete another new judge, who in fact, issued the best juror comment: “An aesthetic upgrade to an already awesome product ... this is what I have been waiting for Toyota to do with the Prius since its first introduction!” You will have to guess which judge below earned the unoffi cial ‘LOL’ trophy; you will also need to read on to uncover what innovative product inspired that colorful praise. But back to our competition—the winning entries never cease to amaze me with their thoughtful designs and aesthetics, and of course, their ability to solve challenges in specific product categories. This year’s winning innovations not only address pain points in specification, installation and user interface, but enhance architectural details. It’s my hope, in the following pages, that you’ll find solutions to daily design dilemmas, along with some entertaining insights from fellow architects. Renovation Preserves Character The Troubadour is a 184-room luxury boutique hotel in the heart of New Orleans. Located in the Central Business District, the 1960-era Troubadour was formerly a 17-story office building. It changed hands Feb. 2015 and was renovated and reopened as a hotel in Dec. 2016. Like most 1960s buildings, the Troubadour is made of concrete and steel. Initially, a curtainwall was to be installed in large single punch openings using standard T or F anchors. However, in test openings, rebar was hit in each attempt to drill into the concrete; all supporting structure for the windows had deteriorated. Given the historical significance of the building, and weather-related conditions unique to New Orleans, the goal was to maintain historical aesthetics while providing protection against extreme weather conditions. To honor the building’s history, architect John Campo and Rob Haidler, with DeGeorge Glass, reconstructed a mock-up from original deteriorated window parts and selected

YHC 300 OG with applied wide horizontal muntins to match the original sightlines of the building. The high-performance curtainwall is specifically designed and tested to provide hurricane impact solutions for design pressures from 45 PSF to 130 PSF and higher. It is tested and qualified to standard test protocols ASTM E 1886/1996 for small missile, large missile and Missile Level E for Essential Facilities. The solution was to fill the large, rectangular openings in the concrete structure with a structural metal stud wall. This allowed anchoring the curtainwall into the new stud wall rather than into the rebar-laden concrete. This was accomplished with custom modified F anchors. The punched opening curtainwall allowed for prefabrication, assembly, glazing and the installation of the preglazed curtain wall units into the 484 punched openings rapidly, with up to 57 units set in a day. www.ykkap.com or Circle 407

Ceiling Exudes Modern Elegance When designing the interior of the observation deck that circles the 70th floor, the architect desired a space that celebrated the romance, glamour, thrill and optimism of Los Angeles. “The overriding design principle is based on the Los Angeles’ Golden Hour, the ‘magic hour’ of cinematography, fractured light, Hollywood glamour and Art Deco opulence,” says Gensler project architect, Audrey Wu. To reflect this theme, the design team envisioned eight golden chevron ceiling clouds installed in the lobby. With a gold art deco-style bangle bracelet as inspiration, Gensler developed a design featuring louver-like planks canted at an angle to create a layered look and painted gold to reflect the sun. Gensler turned to the “You Inspire Solutions Center” at Armstrong Ceilings to make this concept a reality. Working with Gensler and ceiling contractor Martin Integrated, the design team realized the design vision using MetalWorks’ custom ceiling panels attached and angled upward to create a louvered look. “They almost look like Venetian blinds in appearance,” says design engineer Dan Holdridge. Ranging in size from 20-ft. to 34-ft. wide × 13-ft. to 15-ft. deep, the clouds each have unique dimensions, depending on where in the lobby they

are installed. The ceiling panels are made from rectangular-shaped, 0.125-in. thick extruded aluminum tubes that vary in length, depending on the size of the cloud. To make sure the louvered panels fit together at the correct angles with the framing panels, the tubes were CNC-milled and water-jetted to create the exact shapes needed to secure each panel. “We drew each part in 3D to make sure the shapes were all going to work together when the ceilings were assembled,” says Holdridge. The team from Armstrong Ceilings worked with Gensler to develop the custom metallic gold finish the architect desired for the ceiling panels and recommended that the exposed ceiling and mechanical elements be painted black and a black drywall grid be used. “It’s amazing how close to the original design vision they turned out,” says Wu. “The chevron ceilings evoke the magic of the Los Angeles ‘Golden Hour’—that time of day when the light takes on a golden tone—and they reference the Hollywood glamour and art deco style of an earlier era.” Wu was also impressed with how quickly the ceilings became a reality, enabling Gensler to meet its deadline and have the Skyspace open on time. www.armstrongceilings.com or Circle 406

Stunning Façade a Gateway to Learning The Museum at Prairiefire in Overland Park, Kan. tells a story of geology, culture and the practice of prairie landscape management. The 41,000-sq.-ft. masonry building, with stone-clad backdrop representing the undulating hillside, comes alive with fiery sparks of color. A unique film material represents the fire of controlled burns rolling along the hills, and the stones represent a vast range of colors found throughout a Midwestern prairie. The vision of Jonathan Kharfen, AIA, LEED, senior associate at Verner Johnson, Boston, was to mix regionally sourced natural limestone with manufactured stone veneer from Oldcastle’s Echelon product line. Because Mother Nature doesn’t always have the colors you want in stock and at the right price, he went with manufactured stone veneer for the darker spectrum to achieve the desired “charred” gradient. “We incorporated four standard Echelon Cordova veneer colors and then worked closely with Oldcastle to create two custom colors,” said Kharfen. “The museum folks had so much faith in the design and loved what we did,” said Kharfen. “I love talking about the project because we took on some big challenges and succeeded to create something so special.” www.echelonmasonry.com or Circle 405

Successful Silicon Valley Facelift Tasked with completely modernizing a nondescript, circa 1980s office building, Modulus Architects was met with strict design constraints: building owners required the renovation cause minimal disruption to occupants, while being delivered on time and on budget. After assessing the project, Modulus decided to preserve as much of the existing structure as possible and to envelope the exterior with Bendheim’s decorative glass rainscreens. The selected system features the company’s Wall-F compression fittings and approximately 5000 sq. ft. of translucent laminated safety glass. The rainscreen creates a dynamic, modern look changing its appearance as daylight travels across the façade. According to architect David Fenster of Modulus, “The system proved to be a perfect match unachievable through any other avenue. Both its cost and ease of installation resulted in a newly transformed building garnering great attention and accolades throughout the technology driven Silicon Valley, with a façade and image unlike any other in the area. It was without question a huge success.” The ventilated glass system was part of a $4M renovation of the aging $13.5M property. A year later, the building sold for $36M, realizing 105.7% return on investment. Hancher University of Iowa, Iowa City As the premier presenter of performing arts statewide, the University of Iowa’s Hancher has been dubbed “the largest classroom on campus.” With sweeping horizontal forms that echo the nearby Iowa River, the building’s design draws from its natural surroundings. Forms cantilever at the south end of the building to create ribbon overhangs for the lobby and second-level terrace’s floor-to-ceiling glass walls, offering shaded sunlight during the day and views of the campus and river. “The shape of the building was very much influenced by the site and the river. We felt it needed to be a panoramic building with the main focus addressing the university at large, especially the arts campus. In this way, Hancher serves as a gateway to the arts campus,” said architect Mitchell A. Hirsch AIA, LEED AP, Design Principal, New Haven, Conn.-based Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. Designed with an efficient envelope and incorporating sustainable design strategies related to the site and to building systems and controls, the building’s LEED objective is Gold. As a replacement for the original Hancher, damaged by Iowa River flooding in 2008, the new building is designed to 500-year flood criteria. The building features an 1800-seat auditorium, rehearsal studio, teaching rooms, offices, a scene shop and costume shop.

MOTO (Middle-of-Town) Apartments, Denver Capturing the character of the area with its earthy color palette and livable communal spaces, Gensler’s design on the mixed-use development was an expression of neighborhood desires.

The Denver area is booming; the design of emerging workforce housing by most standards has been quick and dirty thus far, resulting in anonymous-looking stickframe buildings “that could really be placed anywhere,” says Nick Seglie, Gensler Denver. Elevation Development Group decided to up the local design quotient when they asked Gensler’s Denver office to design MOTO

(Middle of Town) apartments. “So what we wanted to do as much as possible is express what the neighborhood and demographic who would live here would want,” says Seglie. The mixed-use development captures the character of the area with its inviting wood trim, earthy color palette and livable communal spaces. A concrete podium reveals itself on the sloped site, “It’s

a textural material that changes over time,” says Seglie. Metal panels and cedar soffits wrap the horizontal massings in a simple palette; but rather than looking austere, the effect is an elegantly masculine aesthetic. “They are simple materials used in creative ways.”

CHARMING CEDAR Soffits and Trellis/Pergola (sealed in knotty cedar clear coat epoxy). The design uses a cedar overhang on the residents’ building entrance, and tongue-and-groove soffits add visual texture and interest, softening the industrial look from the pedestrian’s perspective. “When you’re standing on the sidewalk below and look up, you see the cedar soffits,” says Seglie. “The metal panels and natural cedar make a nice contrast.”

WOOD ALTERNATIVES Although the abbreviated construction time frame seems like a necessity in the Colorado climate and a win-win; it did have one drawback in terms of constricting the specs. Seglie says the team discussed using an alternative wood product such as Kebony or Accoya—treated wood products with the appearance and durability of exotic hardwood—for the exterior soffits and trellis. “We talked about it quite a bit,” says Seglie. “But ultimately, the contractor wasn’t confident he could get it there in time.”

Wood framing was completed in about a month; the entire project in about a year. JOISTS, TRUSSES AND FRAMING Boise-Cascade’s BCI Joists (2.3125 in. × 11.875 in. × 32 ft., pre-stamped knockouts and eased edges) are specially constructed I-joists with flanges made from VERSA-LAM laminated veneer lumber and a flange profile for strength and durability; they are lighter and stronger than traditional lumber, saving on logistics. Along with the I-Joists, the prefabricated framing and truss system was built locally by Foxworth Galbrath Construction Services and Supplied by MiTek Industries’ engineered products and systems, allowing the project to speed to completion. This model unit exudes a chic sophistication, and some instances the spartan apartments are being marketed as student housing by real estate websites.

CHANGING LANDSCAPE The project included 7,833 sq. ft. of Morin’s F-16 wall panels, in 18-gauge Galvalume in Silversmith color.

Rooted in the landscape and history of the Varina District, the 43,000-sq.-ft. library features materials that are reminiscent of the agrarian structures that once populated the area. CHALLENGE: The Varina Area Library is a new facility on 22 acres of land in the rural, eastern section of Henrico County. It replaces a 6,000-sq.-ft. building that served the area for more than 40 years.

Varina’s citizens wanted an active library that provided a “next generation” of library services. According to the BCWH Architects, the library’s design “is rooted in the landscape and the history of the Varina district. The building and materials are reminiscent of the agrarian structures that one populated the area. Borrowing on the form of a tobacco barn, the main library functions are housed in three pavilions that sit seemingly independent on the site.” INFLUENCE: Choosing building materials reminiscent of the agricultural structures common to the region, the design of the library blended wood and stone, as well as metal roofing and wall panels. “It was an attempt to reflect the buildings of the area,” says Kylan Shirley, AIA, of BCWH Architects of Richmond, Va. “It’s an area with a lot of barns, once dependent on agriculture, but it’s changing fast.” SOLUTION: Approximately 32,500 sq. ft. of Morin’s SLR-16 roofing panels were installed on the Varina Library. The 22-gauge Galvalume panels were in the PVDF color Silversmith. The project included 7,833 sq. ft. of Morin’s F-16 wall panels, in 18-gauge Galvalume, also in Silversmith.

CRITERIA: HOK Architects mandated this facility meet or exceed all green and sustainable standards for the city, which included the construction of a 24,000-sq.-ft. green roof. SOLUTION: Plans called for an American Hydrotech Extensive Garden Roof Assembly to be placed on top of the building’s metal roof deck. Hydrotech worked with the designers to select roof components and plant material that were optimized for

both Chicago’s climate conditions and structural limitations. The Extensive Garden Roof Assembly was planted with InstaGreen Sedum Carpet, which contains nine to 15 different species of Sedum. Sedum is a succulent plant that is able to store water in its leaves and grows well under diverse conditions. The sedum carpet provides almost 95% coverage at the time of installation, which is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also reduces initial maintenance requirements. In addition to reducing the urban heat island effect, and purifying the air, the Extensive Garden Roof Assembly is able to capture more than 1.5-in. of water on the roof, which plays a major role in stormwater management.

Visual Arts Building Catches the Eye No stranger to the University of Iowa campus, architect Steven Holl and his new Visual Arts Building provide 126,000 sq. ft. of loft-like space within a beautifully crafted envelope. The building replaces an original arts building from 1936 that was damaged during a flood.

The goal was to minimize field fabrication and allow installers to complete the installation as efficiently as possible.

CHALLENGE: Steven Holl Architects’ first venture on campus was the Art Building West, completed in 2006 and located adjacent to the new Visual Arts Building. Although dramatically different in design and materials, the two buildings are complementary, according to Steven Holl.

Steven Holl and senior partner Chris McVoy led the design team. According to Holl, “We did over 30 design schemes. It was a very long process, but we were very dedicated to finding the right fit. I’m very, very proud of the results. It’s a very economical building, which was another big challenge.”

INFLUENCE: Now home to the departments of ceramics, sculpture, metals, photography, print making and 3D multimedia, the new Visual Arts Building presents an industrial aesthetic with clad, pouredin-place concrete walls.

“This type of large, custom job designed by a worldclass architect is really our strong suit,” according to Sam Arnold, project manager, Architectural Wall Systems, the installing contractor.

“The panels came to us prefabricated from Germany. Our goal was to minimize field fabrication and to allow our installers to have everything they needed on-site to complete the installation as effi ciently as possible.” The RHEINZINK panels, as well as the stainless steel panels, were custom designed, engineered and fabricated by POHL Group, headquartered in Cologne, Germany. Arnold reports there were 13,000 holes in a specific pattern in each of the stainless steel perforated panels that were continuous with punched windows across the south and west elevations. The panels have returns into all of the windows. POHL also fabricated curved panels that were utilized on the building’s vegetative roof to clad large skylights.

As shared by Marie Fechik-Kirk, director of Sustainability for Lafayette College, the reuse of the existing building posed many challenges including restoring the fire damaged wood structure, as well as understanding the impact of insulating and conditioning the interior of the building. The existing posts and beams were covered and the full extent of the fire damage was unknown. All existing timbers and structural decking was exposed and assessed for structural integrity. CRITERIA: Careful consideration was given to the impact of insulating and conditioning the building, as it was historically an open structure. The masonry façade was original reinforced units with minimal

tiebacks and no expansion joints. To maintain the ability for the masonry to dry from both sides, an interior rainscreen wall was created to allow for a continuous air space from foundation masonry vents up to the soffit line. Interior insulated wall panels were built, waterproofed with a breathable liquid membrane, and installed from the interior of the building. Existing window openings were detailed for flashing and maintaining the continuous airspace while allowing reinforcement of the masonry façade by tying to the interior wall system. The installed system maintains the cycle of the existing building while allowing for a comfortable interior workspace. SOLUTION: Isoleren insulated metal wall panels from ATAS International were incorporated into the building to help achieve sustainable design objectives. The panels were installed in the additions that are unconditioned spaces. The insulating properties assist in keeping the spaces comfortable when occupants and visitors access them to move between building levels.

Utah Theater Breathes Planners were especially challenged by the newly constructed, $80 million Hale Center Theatre. Acoustical smoke vents and double-leaf terrazzo doors were suggested, all of which proved essential to the project’s construction. CHALLENGE: Theater construction projects come with an inherent set of challenges. Besides audience safety, they also must meet the needs of performers, create space for set deployment, and account for directors and producers who demand precise timing and mechanical performance. Among the challenges for Layton Construction, the general contractor for the project, were roofing and flooring needs. Both are essential components to quality theater performance, and with a project of this magnitude, the contractor needed to have the equipment that would make the project come together. NOISE PREVENTION The smoke vents, commonly used in concert halls, theaters and other interior applications to restrict noise from the outside, feature an STC-46 acoustical sound rating.

SOLUTION: Zack Williams of Cannon Sales suggested BILCO acoustical smoke vents and double-leaf terrazzo doors, all of which proved essential to the project’s construction. BILCO provided 20 acoustical smoke vents with 24-volt electric thermolatches, which prevent inadvertent opening of the covers that can be caused by wind or building vibrations. The smoke vents feature an STC-46 acoustical sound rating, which guard against noise intrusion, a must-have for the Hale Center. The smoke vents are commonly used in concert halls, theaters and other interior applications that restrict noise from the outside. They also provide the security of automatic smoke venting. The vents include gas spring operators to open the covers in snow and wind, and have built-in dampers to assure smooth opening and eliminate the possibility of operational, roofing or structural damage.

Layton installed two double-leaf terrazzo doors, which are designed with a pan cover to accept a variety of flooring materials. Each door is spring balanced to ensure smooth, easy operation upon installation of the flooring material. The door includes an aluminum frame with built-in anchor flange around the perimeter.

However, the general contractor, Tiger Construction, had already specified DensGlass with a separate WRB. It wasn’t until the structural phase revealed an issue that the original specification was reconsidered. “There was an error made in budget preparation and it was realized early on that the customer had to save money over what was originally specified,” said Brenan Filippini, of Plastering Plus Northwest, the FastFlash installer on the project.

With the project falling behind schedule, a reduced budget, and terrible rainstorms native to the Pacific Northwest rolling through the build site, DensElement Barrier System became the best option for weatherproofing. Zervas Group wanted the nail sealability of a fluid applied approach while eliminating the weather issues related to the installation of a coating over the entire surface. DensElement Barrier System with PROSOCO FastFlash liquid flashing assured deadlines were met. The layered construction of the AquaKOR Technology, which is integrated within the gypsum core beneath the fiberglass mat, creates a consistent, performance-tested WRB-AB. . With its high permeability, the system helps mitigate the risk of damage from moisture build-up in the wall cavity and helps protect against mold growth.

CHALLENGE: Renovation of the former bank building involved multiple challenges. Not only did the space feature the original plaster ceiling, original brick walls and extremely tall windows, but it also included a large safe that the design team would have to somehow incorporate within the interior design approach. Another challenge, according to lead designer Erica Diskin, Assembly Design Studio, was that the interior space consisted of a massive amount of concrete slab flooring, a difficult flooring substrate to work with—especially considering concerns with budget. “It was a huge undertaking,” said Diskin.

Speaking Up About Specifications Anne Hicks Harney is adamant when it comes to the responsibility of the architect as it relates to the knowledge of transparency tools and the specification of healthy products. Committing to a specific objective becomes the starting point for implementing healthy materials.

LEED Fellow Anne Hicks Harney, FAIA, is serious about furthering the specification of healthy materials. Harney chairs AIA’s Materials Knowledge Working Group; she is also a member of the Materials & Resources Technical Working Group, and her firm, Long Green Specs provides sustainability focused construction specifications and building science expertise to firms across the country. “We’re just obsessed with materials,” says Harney. Despite the gravity of chemicals of concern, Harney manages to take a lighthearted approach when broaching the subject. Presenting at the Living Products Expo, Harney flashes a slide depicting how household building products adversely affect human health, saying that substances affecting sperm count have converted many a client to healthy materials. “I had a guy who rolled his eyes [at first] and then said, ‘Now, I can’t use dryer sheets, my daughter can’t be a goalie [because of rubber turf] and we don’t buy toothpaste with triclosan in it.” But to Harney this is evidence that making incremental changes in our daily habits is no different from making changes in our professional lives. Harney feels strongly that knowledge of transparency tools and specification of healthy products lies in the hands of the architect, “Architects own materials,” says Harney. “And they need to

start [specifying them] from ‘first-do-no-harm.’” She admits that on the outset, the task may seem daunting. “If you just start today with no more carcinogens, you’re going to be appalled and say, ‘wait how am I going to build without that?’” The upside is that the client will not tell you what kind of drywall, or carpeting or paint to use. Occasionally, says Harney, a facility’s operators may tell you the kind of roof they want, but only because it’s what the crew already knows how to maintain and repair. “So we can rate materials good, better, best, and then ask, ‘why?’ and answer that with what you care about most,” suggests Harney. For instance, in education settings, in schools, the interiors are for kids, so start with classrooms: everything that goes into them has to be red list free. Committing to a specific objective becomes the starting point for firms implementing healthy materials. “Before you know it, you’ll have a palette of materials and best products to use in every building,” says Harney; and adds that a yearly check-in is needed to make sure nothing substantial has changed. California’s Prop65 label is making it even easier for practitioners and for clients to begin incorporating healthy products—Harney says since Prop65 some of her clients are stunned to learn a product they have been using for years is unacceptable in

California. “We used to look to D.C. for policy, and California for entertainment. Now we look to California for policy and D.C. for entertainment,” says Harney half-jokingly. But colleagues on AIA’s lobby substantiate Harney’s quip, saying, “Don’t expect change at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.” Just accepting that and moving on is the way industry and private companies are moving ahead with healthy materials, but even then, that can become political. For instance, a Google grant to the USGBC resulted in Better Building Materials, a 215-page document on healthy, safe materials. “It was on the Internet for all of five minutes,” recalls Harney. When the American Chemistry Council (ACC) threatened to litigate, the USGBC repealed the document. SmithGroupJJR posted it on their website briefly, but took it down; and no one Harney has approached at Google will comment on it. Despite attempts to stifle the progress of healthy materials, Harney, the USGBC and the ILFI’s “Just-Do-It” attitude are incrementally prevailing. With 3000 Declare labels and counting, “transparency is moving really fast—but it’s not there, yet,” says Harney, who was instrumental in the MRTAG’s approval of a Declare label as a LEED V4 disclosure document. —Megan Mazzocco, Senior Editor
