Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.

• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.

• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.

• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.

• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.

• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.

• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in-person contact with you.

• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

BRIEF HISTORY

The Bullmastiff was originally bred to accompany the English Gamekeepers at night to protect their forests from poachers. Early 20th century laws in England were so harsh that poachers would go to great lengths to escape. The “Gamekeepers Nightdog” was bred to catch a desperate man, take him down and hold him. They were developed to be a silent, agile, unstoppable deterrent to those who trespassed on the estates.

Bullmastiffs were developed by blending the original British Bulldog and the English Mastiff (the agreed blend was approximately 60% Mastiff for size and substance and 40% Bulldog for agility and tenacity).

Today the Bullmastiff is much more widely known as an excellent companion.

GENERAL BREED DESCRIPTION

The Bullmastiff is a large, powerfully built breed with a distinctive head and expression, being large with a square skull and muzzle, compact and muscular in body, capable of a medium level of activity. They come in any shade of fawn, red or brindle, along with a black mask and darker coloured ears, with slight white marking on the chest allowable.

The breed requires limited and controlled exercise in their first year of growth due to softer, developing bones, with special care made if spending time indoors on slippery surfaces or stairs.

As a large breed they need consistent, firm training from the time you bring your puppy home. The Bullmastiff puppy should also be widely socialised with both people and dogs to ensure you raise a sensible, well balanced and valued member of the household.

Be aware, they do drool, not excessively, but especially after drinking when they like nothing more than to share it with you and also whilst you are eating.

TEMPERAMENT

The Bullmastiff is generally described as high

spirited, alert, intelligent, sometimes stubborn, and faithful. They’re courageous, discerning and protective of their family and make great guardians. They do however need love, affection and inclusion as a family member and do best when they live with the family.

AVERAGE LIFE SPAN

When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime. The average life span of the Bullmastiff is approximately 9 to 10 years.

COAT AND CARE REQUIREMENTS

The Bullmastiff coat is short and dense needing minimal grooming, typically a weekly brush. The coat has a major change at the end of puppy and towards each summer and more consistent grooming is desired at these times of shedding. Nails should always be kept short and trimmed for the best foot/toe health. In high humidity they can be prone to hotspots, so regular checking of the coat, especially around the neck, cheeks and under the ears is recommended.

Their diet needs to be nutritious and balanced, providing a suitable amount of protein without too much fat. In most parts of this country they

21 DOG WORLD April 2023

can live either indoors or out but typically they prefer to be inside with their family. If living outdoors, they should have a warm kennel and adequate shelter from the varying elements of our climate.

SIZE

Height: Males 64 to 69cms (25 to 27ins), Females 61 to 66cms (24 to 26ins).

Weight: Males 50 to 59kgs, Females 41 to 50kgs.

HEALTH

All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders it is recommended you enquire about the breed’s health and what health testing the breeder does. The Bullmastiff is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur. These may include Hip Dysplasia (HD), Elbow Dysplasia (breeders are required to X-ray and score all breeding stock), Entropion (where the eyelid rolls inward causing irritation), Lymphoma and other cancers.

SUITABILITY

Bullmastiffs are known to be very tolerant of children. Due to their size alone, they should always be supervised when around children, as a wag of the tail or raised paw to shake hands, or an over enthusiastic puppy can unintentionally cause harm.

A dog of this breed can be a much-loved family member in any type of household. The Bullmastiff must be kept in a fully secure yard and should always be walked on a lead. They are typically territorial of their yard and once mature, do not always accept other older, unfamiliar dogs on their property.

Although the Bullmastiff is a wonderful breed, it is not the breed for everyone. If you cannot or will not take the time to properly train, socialise and control a large, powerful dog you should not own a Bullmastiff. An individual or family willing to spend the time to love and discipline a

Bullmastiff will find the dog will become one of the greatest pleasures in the owners’ lifetime.

Dogs Australia Activities

Whilst the Bullmastiff is a versatile dog, he is often suited to:

• Conformation Shows

• Obedience

• Rally

IN CONCLUSION

Now you know a little more about this breed. With any breed of dog, it is important to research and determine suitability for your lifestyle before committing to a puppy which will be a part of your family for many years to come.

If you have decided this is the dog for you and wish to investigate further, please contact the Breed Club or Dogs Queensland. They will be able to give you information about available puppies and also suggest dog events where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. In this

FLOODED DOGS

Our brothers and sisters over the ditch have had a rough time of late – the All-Blacks falling from their best, dissension in their ranks, earthquake, flood and finally, Cyclone Gabrielle.

When Auckland was inundated Dogs Queensland President, Ulla Greenwood, rang the President of Dogs New Zealand, David Harris, to see if there was anything we could do to help Kiwi breeders. Harris said that it was all okay and breeders in the Auckland region hadn’t been affected.

Gabrielle changed all that as the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne regions of the north island’s east coast were smashed. Cyclones are rare in the land of the long white cloud, perhaps once a year an ex tropical cyclone will wander past. In 1988, Cyclone Bola, again just passed by, but created some of the largest rainfall totals for a single storm in the history of New Zealand, with some locations receiving more than half of their

annual rainfall totals from the storm.

Unfortunately for Dogs NZ Hawkes Bay and Gisborne were home to some of the nation’s best breeding establishments, Dogs New Zealand President, Brian Harris said this, “Some of the best not just in NZ but the world.”

Oscarbi Samoyeds – flooded for three days.
26 DOG WORLD April 2023
Lusanne St Bernhards

At least eight have lost everything, including breeders perhaps known to many in Australia such as, Oscarbi Kennels – home of exceptional Champion Best in Show winning Samoyeds, Lusanne St Bernhards and Sandbrook Mastiffs. Another, is Dianne O’Neills of Chesterhope Kennels Hawkes Bay, internationally known for world class Pointers.

“14 February started like any normal day after the eye of Gabrielle had ravaged Hawke’s Bay overnight. Getting up to just a few puddles and no damage, little did I know that in 2 hours our lives would change forever !”

Dianne’s husband had gone off to get his morning coffee but he didn’t return, rapidly rising water made the local bridges suddenly impassable.

Dianne and some neighbours began to move farm livestock to higher ground, soon they were belly deep in fast rising brown water.

“It was happening so fast we all just acted on what needed to be done to save the animals and get trailers on and get the dogs safe.”

The highest ground was the small local primary school and so they packed up all their 60 dogs including those boarding into crates and trailers and made for the school where the group now numbering twelve had to smash a window to gain entry and call the alarm people to silence the racket.

In the sudden quiet they heard all the rivers breaking their banks. Despite the growing danger they returned to get the cats they had locked in their house, their road had now become a raging river.

“It took us twenty-five minutes to go the last twenty metres to the school, the water was up to our armpits, the cats were silent but petrified and I thought at any moment I was going to lose my footing, I didn’t think I was going to make it”.

As the waters continued to rise and the air was filled with the noise of helicopters, the sounds of emergency, of panic, they moved tables putting the dog cages atop.

Dianne was the last to be rescued from the

school at 7.50 that evening clutching her five and three week old puppies, but the others had to stay, “Leaving the dogs behind was the hardest thing I’ve ever done but the police wouldn’t let me stay at the school. I was the last resident to leave Pakowhai and was told they had saved over 190 residents that day. “

As the helicopter flew in the gloom, she realised that everything had disappeared under water, her home, her kennels, her job and her life.

The next day a convoy of vehicles were able to get in and get all the dogs out safe and sound and get all our boarders back to their owners safely.

Karl Sandbrook of Sandbrook Kennels, breeder of NZ Champion mastiffs, was another who had what he described as, “surreal crazy stuff”; “We had a torrid time and swam out of our flooded home (as it became a death trap) at 5.30am in the morning. I almost lost all of the dogs (but saved all 4) but had to smash windows and swim them from car roofs, to trees, ultimately leaving them on top of a tractor cab roof once the flooding started to subside.

I have two champion mastiffs that both swam and hung in a treetop for 3 and a half hours on Valentine’s Day. My two little sons aged eight and twelve also held onto a pug each up the top of the small tree. Ultimately not sure if we saved the pugs or they saved my boys from hyperthermia! Either way we all made it.”

Below: Karl Sandbrook sons pictured with the two Pugs they helped save.

27 DOG WORLD April 2023

It was a similar tale for Helen and family from Oscarbi Samoyeds; “We have lost almost all our records. Our property was under 6m of water for 3 days. We were extremely lucky to get out with all our 10 Samoyeds and ourselves with the clothes on our backs.”

Brian Harris President of Dogs New Zealand said;

“Like all good dog people they save the dogs first.”

While that may have been the most important thing it was the only good thing.

In New Zealand they don’t have to worry about flood insurance they have a National Earthquake and War Commission that was started one hundred years ago and paid out $20 billion following the Christchurch earthquake for the rebuild – now somehow the money will also come for the flood rebuild but the only sign of the process so far is the dreaded fluttering yellow tape of destruction that encircles everything that is unsalvageable.

That included Dianne’s home and her kennels and her neighbours who shared this ordeal also lost everything.

“And my 82 year old parents were taken out of their bus in Awatoto in head high water with just their clothing they had on and have had their home and belongings all graded as contaminated and unsalvageable, the sense of loss is just beyond words.”

But Dianne and her business will rise from the waters such is her love for what she does and the community in which she lives; “We cannot begin to thank all the help from the people around us that have turned up to help with the clean-up, friends, clients, the dog world family and the amazing people who randomly turn up with food and well wishes.”

In fact people from all over the international dog world have sent moral support and donations and Dogs Queensland is giving a donation of $5000 and the profits from our upcoming Anzac day show.

Brian Harris has been chuffed by the number of well wishers and donors from all over the global dog world who have been in touch; “These are well known show people who love their dogs and anything we can do to help them in their hour of need would be great.”

The Pawfect Running Partner

Arya, my Tri–Rough Collie, let out a soft bark as I tied the laces of my shoes. We had for the past three months been training for our first half marathon and she had accompanied me each Saturday morning on every park run, many trails, and relished the time spent with me.

It was late afternoon, and the twenty six kilometre trail was to begin in an hour’s time. I had packed my trail bag with water for both of us, a first aid kit and some energy bars. Arya loved the trails, and being of a working breed, she loved to be out running. After I stashed my bag and phone in the car, I went to put Arya in the back seat. She was oozing with excitement.

The trail event was at the Wildhorse Mountain State Forest. We pulled into the car park, which was brimming with people and their dogs. Arya began to whimper and whine. She knew something was going to happen. My Mum waved to us from across the road – she had parked close to us. She also loved the trails, and Arya had grown fond of her. Whenever she struggled with the hills, Arya would give her a nudge and stay with her. It was her way of encouraging her – typical of a Rough Collie.

The three of us made our way to the starting line, and I felt both nervous and thrilled to be doing my first half marathon. The organiser ran through the rules before he fired the starting gun, and we were off. Arya let out a series of barks as she pulled on her harness. I gave her the command for slow, knowing we had a long night ahead. She resisted for a moment before reluctantly slowing to stay by my side. The three of us fell into our rhythm of being slow and steady.

The sun began to dip and cast long, shadowy fingers across the sky. An afternoon breeze blew, drying the sweat that beaded my forehead. I loved the feeling of being on the trail. It was exhilarating.

Arya looked up, pleading for me to let her off the harness so she could run ahead. I smiled and shook my head. Tonight, she would have to stay on the lead. I am sure if she could have rolled her eyes, she would have.

When darkness descended, we switched on our headlamps. The forest was cold, dark, and unwelcoming. I shivered as Mum drew to a stop. She had concerns we had taken a wrong turn, and that there were no other runners on the trail. I looked around. We were all familiar with the trail during the day, but everything was different in the dark of night. There was no moon to help light our

Member’s Tale 30 DOG WORLD April 2023

way. All we had were the headlamps.

I searched for the reflective strip that was used to mark the trail, but could not find one. We continued in our direction, knowing if we did not come across a strip within the next two kilometres, we had gone too far. I glanced at my watch. We had done ten kilometres, and it had been five kilometres since we had seen our last reflective strip. We doubled back until we found the last strip and the turn we were supposed to take.

Groaning, we increased our effort to make up for the time lost. The trail became sandy with fallen branches. We clambered over them until we came to a large tree that was blocking the path. I crawled over the rough bark, calling Arya to come with me. She balked and refused to go over. I made my way back to her before picking her up and carrying her over the fallen tree. My Mum burst into a fit of hilarity as she watched me struggle with my dog. I told Arya she owed me for making me carry her.

We continued past two checkpoints. Rain fell, cooling the sweat and soaking our shoes. We had done twenty kilometres and were tiring. We crossed muddy puddles, went through tall grass hoping that the snakes had cleared out before our arrival. The night was eerie and quiet.

We wondered where all the other runners had gone, as it had been some time since we had seen anyone. I swept my gaze behind us and noticed wavering lights and pointed them to Mum. She commented that thankfully we were not coming last. The lights were closing in on us at a fast pace, prompting us to increase our pace.

The last kilometre was the hardest and even Arya was tiring. Mud, grass, and dirt clung to our clothes and shoes. My legs ached and my socks squished

and squelched inside my shoes. I longed for a hot shower and a soft bed. It was not long before the finish line loomed in the distance, a beacon that offered relief and the end of our run.

As we drew closer, we noticed there were a minimal amount of people. Only the photographer who burst through a thick wedge of shrubbery snapping a pic as we raced over the line and a handful of organisers still lingered where we had first started. Suddenly, the answer to the lack of people came to mind. We had come last. The people we had seen behind us were runners sent to make sure that we got to the finish line.

As we received our beanies and medal for participating, I voiced my revelation to mum. She scanned the people who were packing up. The knowledge that people had given up waiting for us to finish made us burst into laughter. Arya looked up, wondering what had brought on the sudden fit of amusement. I bent down and ruffled her coat before planting a kiss on her head. She licked my face, and I am sure she smiled. We had finished our first half marathon even though we had come last.

Since the marathon, Arya and I have completed more trail runs, regularly attend advanced classes in Obedience and now aim to try Agility. Everything is better with your best friend by your side.

Small Clubs, Big Dreams: Atherton Clubs Are Stronger Together

Over the last few weeks the Atherton Tableland Kennel Club (ATKC) and Atherton Tablelands Dog Obedience Club (TDOC) members voted to come together to support each other to achieve our common goals. Both clubs have dedicated members in all disciplines and in some cases there are crossovers in memberships. While we may have some differences in our purpose, both clubs are absolutely in agreement that we do what we do for the love of our dogs. The health and well-being of our canine companions is at the forefront of both clubs.

Members are keen to support each other by sharing grounds and resources to keep our small clubs viable now and into the future. We are determined to work together for a common cause. We acknowledge that together our voice is stronger.

Each club run shows and events that, on average, attract over 200 entries with exhibitors who travel to our community to camp, shop and tour, when not competing. A little known boost to our local community, especially in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

The TDOC have an average of 60 people attend Obedience training each Wednesday night at their beautiful grounds and the ATKC look forward to being able to hold Conformation show handling classes at the TDOC grounds very soon.

Our shared goal is that through our unity we can secure stability for both of our clubs and make a difference for our dog community in our local community.

ATKC are excited to announce that our shows featuring a wonderful line-up of judges on 15 and 16 July 2023 will be held back on our home ground, the beautiful Atherton Tablelands, thanks to the generosity and support of our friends at the TDOC.

We have hit the ground running!

We have had successful raffles selling out quickly. Thank you to everyone that has purchased a ticket! We now have our club incorporation and ABN and have completed our first round of grant applications.

We have completed our first highly successful Baby Puppy Pre-School class and are starting our second round with a waiting list for further classes!

Baby Puppy Pre-School is a 5 week program for puppies aged 3 months – 6 months, where we teach owners and puppies a variety of skills from walking on a lead, focusing and listening to their owner, basic Obedience, Tricks and Agility. Our Instructors are Sara F. and Donna M.

We have enjoyed watching these puppies grow from unruly babies with new owners to a beautiful team with respect and enjoyment.

We had a very anti-social, highly reactive puppy join us for week 1 – she ended up being head of her class and winning best puppy at graduation!

Her owner was amazed at her transformation!

The Burdekin region does not have any dog related classes or group training sessions, so the community has embraced the Burdekin Canine Club with each set of classes booking out very quickly!

It’s a family affair at Baby Puppy Pre-School – everyone arrives at the classes with family that live in the household, so it’s a team effort with training their pups. Each family member gets the opportunity to ask questions and troubleshoot any issues they are having with the pup at home.

We take this opportunity to educate the community about being responsible dog owners, the positives associated with pedigree dogs, Dogs Queensland and DQ events.

At graduation every participant received a personalised graduation certificate and Dogs Queensland show bag, which they all loved!

Going forward this year we are hoping to add more classes for older dogs from 6 months of age. We are also looking at bringing Lure Coursing, Sprint and Conformation Showing to the Burdekin in the next 12 months.

A Tale from the TROPICAL North

Michelle Ginn and daughter, Emily, have to travel for one and half hours each way to compete, many times at night in the pouring rain navigating the dangerous Gillies Range outside of Cairns in North Queensland.

But such is her love of our dog world, the science of breeding and the success of daughter and star Junior Handler, Emily, she does it again and again.

To say Michelle is enthusiastic would be an understatement she bubbles over with an evanescent energy. The more bitter and taciturn may not like that but great things happen with passion.

“I come from Pioneer stock on the Atherton Tablelands. My grandmother was a very little girl and she cut the ribbon on the first train track to open up here. My family once had the biggest dairy farm on the Tablelands. My grandfather was known to be the ‘Man that knew his stuff about Cattle Dogs’, he also bred them. I think that’s where I get the love of dogs from actually.”

But Michelle’s engagement with the serious world of breeding is relatively recent, she began that arduous process in 2014 but her love for animals and dogs started way before that.

“Growing up on a farm I just loved animals and their breeding, the chooks, turkeys, ducks and cows, all of it.”

Her passion for dogs and especially Labradors began with a neighbours runaway when she was just eight years of age.

Golden Labrador, ‘Bam Bam’, lived five kilometres away on a neighbouring farm but was constantly escaping and coming to Michelle’s place so his frustrated owners said, “You can have him!”

Decades later, a single mum with two kids in tow she bought a pure bred Labrador but sadly shortly after, it died suddenly from the ravages of a paralysis tick. Her kids were so upset and missed him so, that Michelle just had to get a replacement.

But that was far more difficult than she imagined, there were no Labrador/Retriever breeders in North Queensland and what was she looking for any way,

35 DOG WORLD April 2023

she had a lot to learn.

At the same time, she thought she could become the only Labrador breeder in the deep north. “Hey, hang on, maybe this is something I could do.”

Then she heard about dogs Dogzonline, “I spent hours and hours researching, calling people and asking questions, it was very, very hard I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing and back then there was no social media where you can connect easily with others.”

Finally, she settled on a chocolate and a golden Labrador from noted NSW Breeder, Helen Roche and Phenwick Labradors and with all her breeding purchases she always travels to the breeding kennel to check everything out first.

“I still didn’t know what I was doing, I had so much to learn but I knew what I wanted, I wanted to be good at it and breed the best but God it was a struggle.”

But then something changed everything she met Wilhelm Chang, President of Labrador Retriever Club of Qld Inc

“He loved helping new, genuine breeders, with the right look, the right pedigree, he taught me, he helped me, amazing. I can’t thank him enough, he’s

always been there on the phone 24/7.”

“Michelle was put on the waiting lists for a potential puppy, however, it was a good 3 years later that I have something good enough to send her. Her patience did impressed me and her passion and keenness towards the breed was also evident.” Said Wilhelm Chang.

In 2022 at the major Cairns Kennel Club show Michelle and Emily Ginn won the Gundog Trophy and Michelle has lost count of the ribbons her and her progeny have won.

Five dogs are registered as national Champions with another five waiting in the wings, an upstart had killed it.

But equally satisfying has been the work and success of 12 year old daughter Emily.

“What I love about dogs is their loyalty and companionship with myself and my family. I like spending time with my dogs, working together with my dogs and getting them to trust me and I love their willingness to work.”

Emily went to a show with her Mum and was hooked; “I noticed lots of junior handlers in the ring, it looked like a fun experience so I became a dogs Queensland junior member and started handling in early 2021.”

It was Wilhelm Chang who again made the difference suggesting he send up a dog for Emily to show and so two years ago the work began, given the distance from classes it was just practice, practice in the paddock; “Learning tips and tricks was quite difficult due to not being able to attend classes.”

Mum, Michelle; “Again, we didn’t have a clue what we were doing but I’d video her efforts in practice and in the ring and send them to Wilhelm and he’d make suggestions, slow down, speed up, use a longer or shorter lead and at each show we’d pick up tips. Given all that it’s just amazing how well she’s done.”

Wilhelm Chang agrees, “Little Emily was amazing,

36 DOG WORLD April 2023

all my suggestion were followed, she just took it in her stride. Very commendable for a 10 years old!”

Emily was now in the thick of it, “Going to the 11th Labrador National in Durack was an amazing experience as well as spending time with the one and only Mr Wilhelm Chang, President of the Labrador Retriever Club of Queensland.”

But in the end, according to Michelle, it was simply pure hard work and determination. “Given all that she has had to contend with its just amazing how well she’s done.”

The highpoint so far would have been last year’s Ekka show.

They had just completed the Nationals so the Ekka was an afterthought, perhaps an opportunity to relax and have a bit of fun when suddenly Emily was offered the chance to show a dog.

“Thanks to Mr Neal Macrossan entering his lovely yellow bitch, ‘Justice’, I got the opportunity to handle her in the ring.”

But it wasn’t as simple as that, “We panicked, all her show ring outfit was stuffed in a bag in our car that was some distance away so off we ran, pulled the creased and crumbled outfit out of the bag and ran all the way back.”

Then they got getting lost in the massive Showgrounds as their Group 3 gathered in the marshalling area but they made it, just, “And she won! It was just the best!”

Emily; “The Brisbane Royal (Ekka) was an experience I’ll never forget.”

What did her mentor, Wilhelm think?

“It was great to see Emily having such fun in the ring. Everyone love to win, especially to a young Emily such exposure are precious.”

And Emily’s favourite dog, “Out of all the dogs I’ve ever handled my favourite dog would’ve been ‘Rumpy’, he was a big golden coated Labrador. I loved how Rumpy always wanted to have a go in the ring, no matter the time or place ‘Rumpy’ wanted to show off his stuff we did Junior Handlers together giving me very good practice throughout my journey. I hope in the near future ‘Rumpy’ can come back home for his retirement.”
