President’s Message
“
I
am writing this message on the cusp of April with Easter this week. This is quite a watershed time for Dogs Queensland on a number of fronts. It is great to see us returning to a “new normal” with the number of conformation shows and dog sports events starting to ramp up as evidenced in our Dog World magazine schedules and online. COVID restrictions have relaxed to an extent, but it is a dynamic situation. For this reason, it is so important that any club officials direct any enquiries about COVID event requirements to the office and not liaise directly with government agencies. This results in efficiencies and a consistent approach with the office keeping a finger on the pulse with developments on this front. Our Easter week brings a great array of shows in both Bundaberg and Ingham and down south as well. A big thank you to the organisers who have had an extra layer of organising and related stresses to deal with. It is also a watershed week for the governance of Dogs Queensland. On Monday, 12 April 2021, we will have the last board meeting of the current Board. I once again thank the departing directors for the voluntary service they have provided over so many years. We look forward to seeing them make a continuing contribution to our dog world as I have no doubt they will. When in 2012 we drafted the constitution of the Canine Control Council (Qld) Ltd, a Company limited by Guarantee, I was looking at 2 options with the construct of the 12 director board and the election of directors. The first option would have provided for 4 year terms with the entire board coming up for reelection every 4 years. The second and recommended option was to have 4 year terms but through transitional arrangements, to achieve an election cycle with 6 director positions coming up for election every 2 years. And that was the option taken. A key benefit of that approach has been governance continuity with half the board remaining at each election.
2021) is followed immediately by the first meeting of the new Board when the Board elects the President and the Senior and Junior Vice Presidents. We are always looking to improve our processes and this time we invited the new directors to meet with the continuing directors and Rob Harrison at a “Meet and Greet” session. This was also an opportunity to distribute a folder containing helpful resources to all present . In my view was a positive thing to do. It was a great opportunity to go around the table and learn more about each individual. What became clear was that we all have very substantive backgrounds in our dog world in a wide range of disciplines and dog breeds. We share a great love of our dog world that goes back many, many decades. And I suppose that is what the good governance of our dog world is all about. Bringing a range of experiences and different backgrounds to the board table in the interest of reaching considered and well-founded decisions for Dogs Queensland. I have no doubt that there will be continued challenges for our dog world over the next few years but I am optimistic that we are well positioned to effectively meet these challenges. The last 2 years held the most amazing array of challenges both State wise and Federally and for our dog world too. We have had bushfires, a pandemic and most recently floods to contend with. And in biblical terms, even a locust plague occurred recently in Western Queensland. I thank the office and the Board for dealing with the unfolding of the challenges over this period and also thank you, the members, for your patience in dealing with the cancellation of events and the general impacts on our daily lives. The current rollout of COVID vaccines is such a welcome development.
On my calculation, we have had 5 election cycles since 2012. What happens is that the successful director candidates are announced after polling closes in February and those directors “remain on ice” until the AGM at the end of March with a changeover of the Board at that time.
I am confident the 2021 Board will similarly work effectively in the best interests of our dog world over the next few years.
Under the Constitution, the AGM (happening on 14 April
Ulla Greenwood, President
”
I wish you all a very Happy Easter in the company of your families and dogs.

Life Membership may be granted to any member of Dogs Queensland who has rendered outstanding or special services to Dogs Queensland. That person shall retain membership of Dogs Queensland for their life unless otherwise determined by virtue of any exercise of disciplinary proceedings under the CCC(Q) Ltd Rules.
• Limited Register Form Errors
Any Affiliated Kennel Club or Financial Member may nominate any member for Life Membership. That person will have a minimum of fifteen (15) years continuous full membership of Dogs Queensland and must have been a member of a Club or Clubs during that time. Such nominations are to include a citation, which provides the justification for the nomination. Citations for those Life Memberships awarded will be published in the Dog World magazine, and, where possible, presentations will be made at an appropriate function or event. The CCC(Q) Ltd Board of Directors will consider all nominations on their merit and with strict confidentiality. The Board sees the grant of Life Membership as honouring a member who has been truly outstanding in his or her support of Canine Affairs, particularly beyond that of a single Club. All nominations for 2021 Dogs Queensland Life Memberships should be received in the Dogs Queensland Office no later than Wednesday 12th May.
APPROVAL OF NATIONAL/RESTRICTED TRIALS APPLICATION: DALMATIAN CLUB OF ACT The ANKC is pleased to advise the approval of the 2022 National Show/Restricted Obedience and Restricted Agility Trial application received from the Dalmatian Club of ACT via Dogs ACT to be held on 12 and 13 March, 2022 at Dogs ACT EPIC Exhibition Park, Federal Highway, Mitchell, ACT.
SEND BACK FEE Members will have seen the weekly Transaction Time Index that is provided in Paw Prints. As an overview for 2020, we received 3302 Litters in the Office, of these Litters 57% were submitted incomplete or incorrectly requiring written contact with the breeder from the Office. Examples include but are not limited to the following;

DOG WORLD April 2021
• Membership and Ownership issues • Missing Forms, ie Colour Verification, Certificate of Fitness, AI Forms • Signatures of Breeders or Stud Dog Owners • Missing or Incorrect Microchip Numbers • Missing or incomplete DNA Parentage Certification Of the 57% of sendbacks, approximately half of these were due to incomplete or missing DNA information. The Board acted earlier in the year to extend the cheaper registration deadline form 3 months to 4 months and this will be kept in place to allow breeders more time to complete the DNA Parentage Verification prior to submission. The Board has taken note of these send back rates and noted the extra workload placed on the Office and has agreed that from 1st March, that any litter received in the Office that requires further written contact with the breeder will incur a $10 handling fee.
MAIL REDIRECTION FROM FORTITUDE VALLEY TO MT OMMANEY Members are advised to send all correspondence to Dogs Queensland, PO Box 1136, Mt Ommaney Qld 4074 to avoid non-delivery or a ‘return to sender’. Mail redirection from our Fortitude Valley post box will cease on 1 May 2021.

THE WELSH CORGI – Pembroke AND CARDIGAN
Stories are legion about their prowess ... not only as cattle dogs, but rabbit-catchers, hunters, gundogs, obedience champions – the Corgi appears to have every talent known to dogs. Every Corgi owner knows the intelligence and determination, love of life and spirit of this little dog!!! 8
DOG WORLD April 2021
Content sourced from the Extended ANKC Breed Standards with additional information by J. McCann and the Welsh Corgi Club of Qld.
There are two breeds of Welsh Corgi – the Cardigan and the Pembroke. They are not varieties of the one breed. They are independent breeds, each with an independent origin and purpose.
WELSH CORGI (PEMBROKE) The Pembroke Corgi is the physically smaller member of the Working Group, but despite its size, he has a very big heart and big appeal and is still a very popular dog in the United Kingdom, United States of America, New Zealand and, of course, here in Australia. His popularity is attributed by many to the British Royalty, who have been associated with the breed since 1934, but there is a large band of loyal supporters of the breed in the way of breeders and fanciers throughout the world who care very much for the breed’s welfare and future. PURPOSE FOR WHICH THE BREED WAS USED The farmers in the Pembrokeshire area of Wales developed the Welsh Corgi Pembroke as a cattle dog and companion dog. The Corgi was an indispensable helper to the farmers, where the famous herding instincts would aid in everything from bringing in the dairy beast for milking, to gathering in the sheep, to guarding the hens, to the long drover’s treks.
higher off the ground than our present day dogs. So it was that, late in 1925, a notice appeared in a Pembrokeshire newspaper inviting all interested in the Corgi to attend a meeting at the Castle Hotel in Haverfordwest on Tuesday, December 15th at 4.30pm. This advertisement was signed by J. H. Howell, M.F.H., otherwise know as “Captain Jack” Howell, of Solva, Pembrokeshire, whose papers and diaries in the County Records Office in Haverfordwest have provided much valuable and authentic information. Captain Jack became Chairman of the new club at that first meeting, which he described as “very good”, noting in his diary that “40 to 50 were present”. The little membership/rule book, published that month gives us the names of the founders and also states “That this Club be called “The Corgi Club”. The Welsh Corgi Pembroke, having spent hundreds of years as a farm and companion dog, finally found his way into small agricultural shows in Wales during the 1800’s, but it was not until 1925 that classes were provided for them. At that stage, the Cardigans and Pembrokes were shown together. In 1928 they were officially recognised by the Kennel Club in the UK, and the first Challenge Certificates were awarded. The two breeds were separated on the Kennel Club register in 1935. And in the early days of the Welsh Corgi Club the spelling of the word “Corgi” could vary somewhat – “Corgie”, “Curgi”, “Curgie”.
He is an energetic worker who controls the herd from behind by barking and nipping the heels of the cattle and then going down to ground to avoid the kicking hooves. His short sturdy legs give him the ability to stop, start, twist and turn, and his low centre of gravity gives him great balance. The Welsh Corgi is not built for great speed and he was not required to work in large open spaces as the Welsh farms were only small.
A number of Pembrokes came to Australia prior to 1930, but the first registered imports were brought into Melbourne by Mr J Nish in 1934. These first arrivals were Aust Ch Rozavel Ranger (Imp UK) and Aust Ch Rozavel Pipkin (Imp UK). In 1935 Pembrokes were exhibited for the first time at the Melbourne Royal Show. Aust Ch Rozavel Ranger (Imp UK) was the dog Challenge Certificate winner, and Aust Ch Titania of Sealy (Imp UK) won the bitch Challenge Certificate.
HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE BREED Any records of the origin of the breed have been lost in time (if indeed any ever existed), but it is generally thought that the Welsh Corgi Pembroke was developed by the breeding of local dogs with spitz types bought into Wales by the invading Vikings and the Flemish weavers in about 1100AD. These early dogs were much lighter in bone and
The General Appearance of the Pembroke states “Low set, strong, sturdily built, alert and active, giving impression of substance and stamina in a small space. This clause in the breed standard gives a sort of bird’s eye view of the Pembroke Corgi as a whole, which should instantly appeal as a herding dog, alert and active, low set, strong and sturdily built.”

Correct breed type must be a combination of; • a correctly proportioned and balanced head • foxy in shape and appearance, together with a body capable of endurance • not so low and heavily bones as to appear coarse or overdone, nor so lightly boned as to appear racy. The Pembroke’s coat is of medium length, straight with dense undercoat, never soft, wavy or wiry. “Fluffy” coats can occur and are not allowable in the show ring. They make attractive pets but do require additional grooming of course. Pembroke Corgis can be a variety of colours - self colours in red, sable, fawn, black and tan, with or without white markings on legs, brisket and neck. Some white on head and foreface permissible. Good dogs come in any colour, providing that the colour is correct to the standard. Approx. 25.4 to 30.5 cms (10 to 12 ins) at shoulder

ROYAL CONNECTIONS The Western Mail of February 12, 1935 carried the following: “London Takes to the Dogs – All London Went to the Dogs Last Week. A tail or not a tail – that is the question where the Welsh Corgi is concerned. It seems a vital question inasmuch as separate classification is now given to the two varieties of the breed, Pembroke and Cardigan. They are both most attractive, funny little dogs. Since the Duke of York bought one they have become very popular. The Duke bought a Pembroke Corgi and the other day I saw Princess Elizabeth in a little tweed coat and a beret, walking him on a lead in the park”. Which brings us to the “Royal” Connection. One of the famous attributes of the Welsh Corgi is his connection with the Royal Family. Since King George VI, as Duke of York, purchased the first Royal Corgi in 1933 they have been known as Royal Dogs. That first one, from Thelma Gray’s Rozavel Kennels in Surrey, was known as “Dookie”. He was followed, three years later, by Jane, who had a litter on Christmas Eve, from which Cracker and Carol were kept. Princess Elizabeth, for her eighteenth birthday, was given “Susan”, who had been born on February 20,
1944, and lived until January 26, 1959. She was buried at Sandringham, together with Sugar and Heather. The Queen’s dogs are usually buried in the grounds of the house in which Her Majesty is living at the time. The Queen now has her tenth generation directly descended from her first dog, Susan. There was some correspondence between Buckingham Palace and Capt. Howell in 1947, the result of which was that Princess Elizabeth received a real (i.e. born in) Pembrokeshire Corgi as a wedding present. This lucky young lady was known as Solva Biscuit. Unfortunately, recalls Miss Nancy Bayly, she had problems finding her way out of Buckingham Palace “in time”, and eventually was given to a lady in waiting with a more accessible garden.
WELSH CORGI (CARDIGAN) HISTORY The Cardigan Welsh Corgi has been recorded by historians as being extraordinarily old in form dating the breed to Neolithic Man in the postglacial age. Ancient tombs do seem to depict a dog very much of similar type and shape as that of the Cardigan. However the origin is lost in the mists of time and it is better to admit we really know nothing of the breed as and if it existed a thousand years or so ago. Historians have recorded that the Cardigan appears to be the older of the two breeds of Welsh Corgi.
Cheryl Neal
What has become generally accepted is that the Cardigan is descended from the short-legged TECKEL group of dogs, which roamed central and Eastern Europe and which were, brought to Wales by the ancient Celts. Photographs of the Corgis were by now very firmly established as first known Cardigans show a heavy deep chested a popular breed. Stories are legion about their working dog with drop ears, very typical of their prowess, not only as cattle dogs, but rabbitTECKEL ancestry. No doubt the fact that in those catchers, hunters, gundogs, obedience champions early years the two breeds of Corgi were not only – the Corgi appears to have every talent known to exhibited together but also interbred, resulted in dogs. Every Corgi owner knows the intelligence the prick eared Cardigan, which we know today. and determination, love of life and spirit of this little dog!!! Developed in the Cardiganshire area of Wales,
DOG WORLD April 2021

the Cardigan was originally used to drive cattle and control their movement by nipping at their heels. The Cardigan was also used as a guard and companion dog. In the late 1880’s many Welsh farmers gave up breeding cattle and took to sheep for which their favourite “heeler” was not suitable due to the trait of nipping the heels of the cattle. This action was rated a fault when applied to sheep with whom a biting dog is undesirable, so in the case of the Cardigan it is thought that some farmers crossed their Corgi with the old Welsh Collie to produce a dual purpose herder. It is also thought that such crossing may have been responsible for the emergence of the blue merle colour in the breed. In the mountainous area where the Cardigan was developed grass grew short so it was not necessary to have a dog with long legs, but it was necessary to have a dog with a good turn of speed, plenty of spring to get over the rocky terrain, deep chest to accommodate good lungs, slightly turned out feet to enable it to move freely over marshy areas and short thick legs so that he
12
DOG WORLD April 2021
could duck out of the way of the flying hooves which went over his head and left him unscathed. Due to the all too frequent poor weather conditions, it was also necessary for the dog to have a good double coat to protect him from the cold and wet. Near the turn of the century, classes were held at some livestock shows for “heelers” or “curs” but it was not until the 1920’s that the term “Corgi” was used regularly and any appreciable breed history can be documented. It is known that Cardigans were exhibited as far back as 1892, however classes under the jurisdiction of the English Kennel Club were not provided until 1925, both types being regarded as one breed, divided into two types. Challenge Certificates were first offered to Corgis at Cardiff in 1928, both types being exhibited together. The two types were recognised as two breeds in 1934 and from that time Challenge Certificates were issued for each breed. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is overall a slightly larger dog that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. It is
not as numerically strong as the Pembroke and its breeders are fewer in number. However its attractive appearance, calm temperament and kindly expression have endeared the breed to the general public with whom it is popular as a companion dog. The breed has loyal devotees in England, throughout the Scandinavian Countries, the United States of America, New Zealand and Australia. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was first brought to Australia in 1953 by an English migrating couple Mr. and Mrs. W Lewis. They were already wellestablished breeders under the LEWDUX prefix in England when they emigrated to live in Western Australia. They brought with them five Cardigans, two males and three females. The 1954 Perth Royal Show was the first Royal Show at which Cardigans were exhibited. English Ch. Hannaford Rudie was awarded first in both the Limit and Open Dog classes and was also awarded the Dog CC and Best Non Sporting Dog in Show. English Ch Morfudd of Lewdux was awarded first in Limit and Open Bitch classes and was also awarded the Bitch CC and Limit Bitch in Show.
In the general appearance of the breed, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is described as “sturdy, tough, mobile, capable of endurance. Long in proportion to height, terminating in fox-like brush, set in line with body.” The Cardigan was bred to work over extremely rough and marshy terrain. He was therefore developed as a sturdy dog with strong bone, able to work tirelessly. It should be noted that the body is required to be long in proportion to height. It is this length of body that permits added spring, giving the dog plenty of mobility. The impression of a Cardigan is that of a wellbalanced, low-slung, long bodied dog of quality with strong bone, keen of expression and free from any coarseness. The finishing touch being the low set tail with its fox like brush. The breed is alert, active, intelligent, steady, not shy or aggressive. The Cardigan has a natural steady temperament. With strangers he does not give of himself lightly and is often quite reserved. However, shyness must be penalised and any viciousness

encountered must be eliminated altogether as it is not naturally found in the temperament of the Cardigan. Their coat is short or medium and of hard texture. Weatherproof, with good undercoat. Preferably straight. The colours of the Cardigan Corgi differ from that of the Pembroke Corgi.
Jessica Stawell
Any colour, with or without white markings, but white should not predominate. The Cardigan comes in many beautiful colours and shadings. The colours found in the show ring today are red/white, tricolour, brindle of various shadings, sable, black/white and the lovely blue merle with the marbled mixture of blue, grey and black hairs. White markings on chest, feet, tip of tail and sometimes a collar, add to the beauty of such colours. SIZE Ideal Height: 30 cms (12 ins) at shoulders. Both the Pembroke and the Cardigan Corgi have been highly successful in the show ring. Additionally, they have proven their suitability in other dog sports such as Agility, Obedience and Herding.
THE WELSH CORGI CLUB OF QUEENSLAND
The Club was established around 1963. Our Breeds Championship and Open Shows are held annually in July. National Breed Shows are organised on a rotational basis by the states. The next Welsh Corgi National in Australia is to be held in Melbourne. (Date to be confirmed.) Bobtails
in the Pembroke Welsh Corgi When the first standard was written, it was only natural that it said “tail short, preferably natural” as a greater percentage of all pems at the time were born with natural short tails. Just look at the photos of the first greats, tail length varied from terrier tails to normal, short bobs, like you can see in Ch Rozavel Red Dragon, whose tail is very much the undocked bobs we normally see here today. In her book, “The Welsh Corgi” Thelma Gray writes, “Many Pembrokes are born tailless or with a very short stump, though half, three-quarter and full length tails are usual.” (Third Edition, page 41)
Typical bobtail: Ch Rozavel Red Dragon whelped 1932 Where did this trait get lost, then? An old English breeder I spoke to about this, told me that when she got a bobtail in a litter, she stopped breeding from that bitch, as the bobs were so difficult to dock, and she found the docked behind so much neater. The same applied to all her friends in corgis. And we all know how easy it is to lose a dominant gene. This maens that mostly the gene “survived” where appearance was not the main thing – that is where the pem was kept as a working dog or merely a pet – although the occasional bob slipped through the breeding program in the bigger kennels as well. Stormerbanks used to get some, and in later years Peggy Gamble of the Blands Pembroke took a great interest in them and made sure the gene was preserved. When the docking ban was enforced in Scandinavia in the late 80’s, the corgi clubs in the Nordic countries all had a different approach to the problem. In Norway, we
16
DOG WORLD April 2021
opted for the natural short tail that is preferred in the standard. As we do not have the big kennels with large breeding stock, it was important that all breeders in the club pulled together and used our resources to the best of the breed. We turned to Peggy Gamble for help and several stud dogs and brood bitches with natural bobs were imported. These dogs were not of the quality our dogs then had, but we knew we had to sacrifice some generations in order to get what we wanted – the saucy little behind we were used to. We realised that by breeding only from those few imports, our gene pool would be drastically depleted, so the long tails were looked upon as a gene bank for future generations, while the bob were bred to our best dogs and bitches, later on breeding the resulting bobs to dogs with full tails again, but still getting over 50% of the pups with short tails. Nothing much was known about the gene at the time we started. It was assumed it was a dominant gene with incomplete penetrance, and we also assumed that the Welsh farmers of old would certainly not have opted for a dog with a natural bobtail unless this meant it was sound and functional, which was the main thing for a working farm dog. But rumours were aplenty; the bobtail lead to the lacking angulation in knee and hock, the bobtail caused kinky tails, the bobtail was related to defects in the spinal vertebrae, the bobtail lead to puppies being born without anus, but worst of all; the bobtail gene was lethal, causing litter sizes to go down,
Four present day bobtails: (Top left) A mature bitch, (Bottom left) 8 weeks pup, (Top right) 9 months male, (Bottom right) a mature male.
dogs to die an early death or if they survived, they were sickly, poor doers. Of course the first generation of bobs were lacking in angulation behind, but that was not because of the bob, it was because our first imports were not show specimens, but solely brought into the breeding program for one reason and never line bred to. Bred to well-constructed dogs or bitches, some of the pups with short tails would inherit the construction of the sire, some of the dam, as in all breeding. Some of the allegations were too far fetched to take seriously, others we decided to fight back not with opinions, but with facts. In this we enlisted the help of the Norwegian Kennel Club, Norwegian Veterinary Institute and the Norwegian University’s Department of Agriculture, the Corgi Club and the Kennel Club contributing the money, the others their time and knowledge. First, both pems with natural short tails and also those with long tails from all lines in a number considered enough for the study to be relevant, were x-rayed and their vertebrae studied. The studies were conducted by Dr Astrid Indreboe at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute and have been published in veterinary journals as well as in our own newsletter. Her findings were conclusive; there are no signs whatsoever that the gene for a natural short tail leads to any defects in the spinal vertebrae, nor is it connected with the kinky tail that can be found in both short and long tails. Dog Sports – Track and Search FIRST TRACK AND SEARCH TRIAL FOR DURACK
Of the 19 entries, and the additional 8 ‘track ons’ that were offered, there were a total of 20 qualifications awarded including:
The versatile Yuggera Canine Club, offering both Conformation and Dog Sports, is establishing a bright future for itself at Durack Showgrounds with its highly successful Inaugural Track and Search Trial.
•
Durack proved to be an ideal venue for the Trial as many of the Stewards and volunteers took advantage of the camping and shower facilities to avoid extensive travel times. The trial attendees were particularly grateful for the catering facilities, especially with Wagz Café opening at 4:30am to give people their coffee fix before heading out to lay the early tracks. The trial was conducted over three days, with Durack the muster point for tracks laid across the surrounding suburbs from Chelmer to Jindalee, from the early morning and into the evening. The efforts of the Yuggera members and the numerous volunteers and competitors resulted in a very successful first sporting event for the Club and first Track and Search trial for Durack.

First Aid:
Joanne Bibby – Fursafe® What if your dog was seriously injured and you needed to transport them to the Vet urgently? How would you go about transporting your dog, so that you: • don’t exacerbate the injury getting in or out of the vehicle? • avoid adding pain to their already painful situation? • can help them if they stop breathing or their heart stops beating whilst on the way to the Vet? and • ultimately get your dog safely into the hands of the Vet? The following steps will make the above possible. 1. Stabilise all injuries – this includes severe bleeding, open wounds, fractures and spinal injuries 2. Manage shock 3. Secure and / or physically support the dog to the car and into the car 4. Ensure the dog is positioned appropriately in the car 5. Remain calm and focus on the task at hand
safety precautions 1. Well before an emergency, ask yourself how you will transport your dog – will it be on a stretcher if it is a large dog; will you need to carry your dog in a crate and if so, could you lift it?
44
DOG WORLD April 2021

Transporting an injured dog 2. Know in advance how you will secure your dog onto the stretcher or make-shift board 3. Ensure the stretcher or crate fits easily through the door of the vehicle 4. Make sure the stretcher or crate fits on the seat and can be secured in place
5. Know the best way to your Vet or if you are travelling where the nearest one is; do a practice run 6. If at all possible, pre-arrange a backup driver, that you can access at a moment’s notice, so you can sit with your dog on the back seat. 7. Limit their movement. 8. Put a muzzle on injured dogs to protect yourself, from being bitten out of fear or pain; however, never put a muzzle on a dog who is having difficulty breathing, has a facial injury or is unconscious. Always make sure the board fits in car before tying dog to it. When securing dog onto stretcher make sure you don’t tie over injured areas. 9. Always call the Vet and inform them you have an emergency and are on the way and advise your estimated time of arrival.
preparing for transport Before you begin moving your dog to the car, ask yourself if your dog is medically stable? • have you checked your dog’s Airway; Breathing; and Circulation?
• have you controlled severe bleeding? • are wounds dressed to reduce the risk of infection? • are fractures stabilised?
unconscious or unable to walk If your dog is unable to walk, whether because of injury or because the dog is unresponsive, you will need to carry them to the vehicle. • • • • • • •
To achieve this, you may need to secure them onto a stretcher or make shift board. A make shift board could be an ironing board, a piece of wood or some other hard surface. Where spinal injuries are suspected, slide dog sideways by pulling dog by scruff and lower back fur, onto hard-surface stretcher keeping head and neck on board (don’t allow it to hang off the end). Secure dog in place – tie dog to board using strips of material, e.g., towels, to ensure stability when moving, to avoid dog slipping, restrict sudden movements or unbalanced lifting. If necessary, use a blanket as a makeshift stretcher and have another person or people help keep stable. Make sure unconscious dogs are placed on their side, opposite to injured side, and their face, facing forward, not towards the back seat rest. Alternatively, for a small dog, wrap them in a blanket, you can then lift them by cradling them in your arms, keeping their body still and straight, ensure the injury is facing outwards and not pressing up against your body or under your arms; then place them in a box or crate secured in the vehicle. You could lay your small to medium size dog on their soft mattress bed and wrap the bed around them, tying it in place. If you cannot lift your dog on your own get some help – just make sure you secure using a seat belt so the dog does not slip off the seat.
conscious and able to walk • •
It may be less traumatic for large dogs to walk to the car, if they are able, and allow them to get comfortable on the seat, if possible. Assist your dog to walk by using a sling or towel under the hips (if not injured in that location
or under their shoulders if injured in the rear) and support their weight so they can walk. • If you have a big dog consider getting a ramp to get into the back of the vehicle. Otherwise get help to move large dogs. • Always cover dog with blanket. • Secure in the car using anchor points or seat belts. • Carry small dogs, wrapped in blanket, to the vehicle and place in a secured crate or box. • Where possible, sit beside your dog and speaking in a soothing tone, stroking gently. Do not hold them or hug them. • Never place your face close to theirs when injured. Make sure the car door is open and seat is prepared before lifting dog.
driving to the vet • If you are the driver slow your breathing and focus only on driving. • Don’t keep looking away from the road and toward the dog. • Keep your voice calm and reassuring. • Take the road you are familiar with; do not attempt to take short cuts unless you know them well. • If possible, whilst someone else drives, sit in the back with the dog, monitoring and soothing during trip to vet. • If you have a driver: •
If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration on the way to the vet surgery.
•
If your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR on the way to the vet surgery.
on arrival at the vet If you have a severely injured or unconscious dog let staff know you have arrived so they can remove dog appropriately from car and take immediately into the examination or resuscitation area. References: Fursafe Emergency Dog First Aid Guide and ANKC PROCEDURE

Miss Gabrielle (Gay) Westmore
– Life Membership Dogs Queensland It is with great pleasure that the Dances With Dogs Club Qld Inc proposes Miss Gabrielle Westmore (Dogs Qld Membership Number 4004240270) be considered as a recipient of the award of Life Membership of Dogs Queensland. Gay Westmore has been a member of Dogs Queensland for over forty years. From 1980 to 1993 Gay went from being the Foundation Secretary of Lockyer Valley Dog Obedience Club to either Secretary or VicePresident continuously until the early 1990’s. Gay then moved to Brisbane and became a member of the Pine Rivers Dog Training Club Inc. In the years since then Gay’s been an active member and trainer with the Pine Rivers Dog Training Club. In 2011 and from 2013 to 2018 Gay was Secretary; from 2019 she was on the Committee, and from 2016 to 2020 the Trial Secretary. These many and varied roles, which Gay has fulfilled successfully, were all done in conjunction with competing in Obedience, Rally Obedience, Agility and, as they were introduced, Dances With Dogs and Trick Dogs. Gay sat as the Chair for the inaugural meeting of interested persons to form

a Dances With Dogs Club on 28 March 2009 and in the 10 years since the affiliation of the Dances With Dogs Club Qld with Dogs Queensland. From 1 Jan 2010, Gay has been President for 7 years and Secretary for 3. In collaboration with other Club members Gay has organised many workshops/seminars with international presenters, training workshops with both local trainers and as a trainer herself. Gay has always been a part of DWDCQ DWD competitions. In those 10 years Gay was the author of a Dances With Dogs Training Manual, an Obedience Training Manual and, recently, a Trick Dog Training Manual with accompanying visual aids all

of which has raised in the region of $20,000 for the DWDCQ. These have gone all over Australia and internationally. As part of the development of both Dances With Dogs and Trick Dogs, Gay was originally a participant on the ANKC Dances With Dogs Working Party and since its inception has been the minute secretary for the National Dances With Dogs Committee and the ANKC National Trick Dog Working Party. This began with development of DWD from 2008 and then the 2 year and 5 yearly reviews of DWD Rules and the Trick Dog Working Party from 2018. The number of hours which Gay has dedicated to compiling and finessing the ANKC Rule Book and associated documentations for both Dances With Dogs and Trick Dogs has been considerable. From the commencement of the sports Gay has been a Foundation judge in DWD and a Foundation judge in Trick Dog. Since 2009 Gay has also been a member of Dogs Queensland’s Dances With Dogs Subcommittee responsible for the continuing growth of DWD and now Trick Dog in Queensland. During this time Gay has been involved with the conduct of 3 State DWD competitions and 2 National DWD competitions – the only Nationals so far conducted in Australia.

Response To Award Of –– Response Award – RESPONSE TOTo AWARD OFOf LIFE Life Membership Membership, DogsQUEENSLAND Queensland Life Dogs Queensland MEMBERSHIP OF DOGS I was in shock when Barbara Murfet rang me to tell me that I had been awarded the Dogs Queensland Honorary Life Member award, but I am very grateful to Dogs Queensland for this award and to the Dances with Dogs Club Qld for nominating me. But nothing that I have done or achieved could have happened without the encouragement and support of a lot of other people. We have probably all seen the Optus ad, “It all starts with a ‘yes’.” I would like to talk briefly about the course of events which led to my receiving this award, including some of the key people who asked a question, to which I said “yes”. First of all I can blame Pat Kingham, from Lockyer Valley Obedience Club (though it was a social club branch of Ipswich Dog Obedience Club back then). In 1980 I had my first German Shepherd and took her to the club as a puppy. I’d only been attending for about 6 weeks when Pat asked me if I could instruct. My response was more “who me?” than “yes”, but she convinced me that I could do it. Mind you, in those days it was pretty much a matter of shouting “forward, left turn, about turn, correct your dog”!! Pat then asked me to be Secretary and then added Trial Secretary when Lockyer Valley became a fully affiliated club, and I undertook those roles for about 10 years; I learnt heaps and made lots of friends in the process. My involvement in the dog world could, in fact, have started in the 1970s, when I took my Labrador to an obedience club in Brisbane. Tara was a very good dog and we did well. But she was unregistered, so they weren’t interested in us. My first German Shepherd, Heidi, was also unregistered, and yet Pat and the other folk at Lockyer Valley nevertheless encouraged and supported us. The previous club’s unspoken response, “no we’re not interested in you” had its own consequences and lost them not just me but no doubt lots of other potential contributors to the club. The years rolled on to 2003 (I was back living in
48
DOG WORLD April 2021
Brisbane by then). The next person who asked me a pivotal question was Jackie Duffy, who strolled up to me at a trial at Oxley (we were passing acquaintances at the time), and asked if I’d like to learn abou t a different method of dog training. I said “yes”. That led me to attend a workshop at Pine Rivers Dog Obedience Club with Sue Hogben; that experience turned my dog training world upside down. Sue and her Golden Retriever Spinner were amazing! She introduced us to the core training tool – a “yes” or marker to let the dog know she’s done what we want (as opposed to a correction when the dog does the ‘wrong’ thing) – and so many other aspects of positive reinforcement based dog training. Over the years since 2003, I have had the privilege of attending workshops with many fabulous local, interstate and international trainers from whom I have learnt so much. Saying “yes” to new and different ideas can lead us on exciting new adventures. One of those was when Dances with Dogs came along and I said “yes” to the opportunity to become involved in this discipline. Then people said “yes” to my suggestion that we form the Dances with Dogs Club, which has now celebrated its 11 year anniversary. In the meantime, back in 2003, I had joined Pine Rivers Dog Training Club and in due course took classes in Obedience trialling and Dances with Dogs, as well as becoming Secretary and Trial Secretary of the Club. I used to write copious notes for my class followup, and after a couple of years thought it would be sensible to compile them into manuals – and so today the DWD Club has three manuals – Obedience Trialling, DWD and Trick Dogs – which together have generated considerable income for the Club. This has been supplemented as a result of the club saying “yes” when I offered to develop a series of training videos to illustrate methods of training DWD – but that morphed into training tricks when the new Trick Dog discipline came onto the horizon in 2019.
Then there’s Barbara Murfet and Coral Pethers who also asked questions to which I also answered “yes”. “Could you act as secretary to the ANKC National Dances with Dogs Committee?” That was back in 2008, prior to the inauguration of DWD, and has continued through two 5-year rule reviews and the development of the Trick Dog discipline. More recently, in 2018, Judy Wright, chair of the National Scent Work Committee, asked “Could you assist with writing the rules for Scent Work?”, to which again I said “yes”.
time”; “no, I’ve got to train my own dog” etc. But some people will say “no” because they don’t think they’re capable of what is asked of them or worry about what others may think. Others on the receiving end of a proposal or suggestion may respond “no” because the proposal has some flaws, because it’s not the right time or for other number of reasons specific to the circumstances. It’s up to each of us how we respond to “no” answers – whether we take our ball home and refuse to play, or bounce back for another day.
I actually think that “it all starts with a ‘yes” is putting the cart before the horse. Often it needs to start with a personal invitation to someone to participate and contribute. A large percentage of people won’t put themselves forward, thinking they are ‘not good enough’, but they may well say “yes” if asked. At the other end of the scale, there are those people who are open to change and who say “yes” when someone comes up with an initiative which may be unconventional or sound wacky. We need to nurture people at both ends of the scale and to encourage participation, contribution, initiative and innovation. We also need to help contributors put on the brakes at times, so that they don’t suffer burn out.
I’d encourage members to think whether they can say “yes” when asked to contribute in some way. If you do join an club, think of Stephen Covey‘s “7 Habits”. It will be more productive to work within the system and try to influence change than to come in like a bull in a china shop and try to overturn existing systems and structures. That is a hard one, and one at which I have at times failed!
There are also people who say “no” – “no, I don’t have
Finally, say “yes” to our dogs. Remember that we’re all in this because of and for them. Value them; value what they give us and what they teach us. Remember: “Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen” (Orhan Pamuk) – something I’m still learning how to do. And I hope that makes more sense to readers than the Optus ad does to me!!

A healthy weight starts with healthy habits A healthy weight is key to your dog’s general health and wellbeing. Over this and the next two editions of the magazine Dogs Queensland will publish simple ways to maintain that healthy weight and keep your dog in good shape, courtesy of Royal Canin. We continue with Weight Management – Healthy Shape (April) followed with Activity (May) and Growth (June).
Weight Management – Healthy Shape HEALTHY WEIGHT ISN’T ONLY MEASURED ON A SCALE Weighing your dog is not the only way to check if they’re overweight. You can find out if your dog is a healthy weight by asking your vet how to use the Body Conditioning Score.
WHAT’S A BODY CONDITION SCORE FOR DOGS? The body conditioning score is used by vets to help you check whether your dog is overweight or underweight. It focuses on the look and feel of your dog because checking their weight alone doesn’t give an indication of a healthy shape.
HOW TO TELL IF MY DOG IS OVERWEIGHT? It’s crucial to identify if your dog is carrying too much weight and take action, as an overweight dog has a higher risk of serious and life-changing conditions. This can include diabetes, cancer, osteoarthritis and more. A dog is classed as overweight when it is 15% to 20% over its ideal weight and is classed as obese when it is more than 30% over. It’s easy to underestimate how heavy your dog is though, so the best way to check if they’re gaining too much weight is a 3-step look-feel-weigh approach. 1.
Look at their behaviour and shape. Are they somewhat lethargic or get tired easily? Does their stomach sag or can you see their waist and the tuck of their abdomen behind their ribs?
2. Feel their ribs – can you only feel them with heavy pressure?
Your vet can show you how to use the dog body condition score chart. It’s also important to visit them regularly so they can help you monitor your dog’s shape over the long-term.
50
DOG WORLD April 2021

The body conditioning score uses a 9-point system ranging from emaciated at 1 to severely obese at 9. The indicators used for scoring are your dog’s ribs, waist and abdomen, and a score of 5 is the ideal dog shape. This means a well-proportioned dog will have ribs that can be easily felt, a waist that can be seen from above and an abdomen that tucks up behind their rib cage when seen from the side.
3.
Weigh your dog – by weighing them regularly you can monitor any weight gain. Your vet can tell you their ideal weight based on their current weight and assessing their body conditioning score.
Eventide
HOW TO HELP YOUR OVERWEIGHT DOG LOSE WEIGHT? The great news is that both overweight and obese dogs can be treated. And getting your dog back to an optimal weight you will increase their quality of life. Dogs of a healthy weight have also been shown to live longer than those with obesity. Being overweight is caused by eating more calories than are being used. So the important areas to address are your dog’s food and exercise. Ask your vet about diets designed for overweight dogs. If you just decrease your dog’s meal sizes it may lead to nutritional deficiencies or begging. Make sure you stick to the portion size on the pack and avoid giving treats in addition to this – or save some of their dry daily food allowance to use as treats. Regular physical activity is essential for their overall wellbeing, as well as helping them lose weight and maintain a healthy shape. Ask your vet about the right level and type of exercise for your dog, and only increase it gradually with your vet’s guidance.
SPEAK WITH YOUR VET If you have any concerns or questions about your dog’s weight or shape, it’s always best to speak to your vet. They’ll be happy to help and can identify how overweight your dog is, if at all, and what actions you should take to help it lose weight or to advise you on how to prevent weight gain. Likewise, it’s important to speak to your vet before making any changes to your dog’s diet, exercise patterns or lifestyle. Or before making any other decisions that could impact their health. As no two dogs are the same, your vet can give you advice tailored to your dog as an individual. This will be based not just on their breed, age and sex, but on factors such as any existing health conditions and whether or not they’ve been sterilised.
A medieval Saxon Baron was once sitting in his large hall having a feast with his friends, as Saxon Barons were wont to do, when a bird flew in from the dark, flitted briefly around the hall and disappeared again out into the inky night. Upon seeing this the Baron, who was usually considered a hard, insensitive person, reflected that the bird’s action was a picture of life. We come from who knows where? We appear briefly on the scene of life, and then disappear just who knows where? In the millenniums of life our brief appearance is no longer than the birds’ in the hall light. The life span of a Bullmastiff is but a short 10 years or less, a possible 15% of the average human being’s. When the time comes to fly back out into the night the way is not always clear; sometimes the exit is blocked by ignorance, insensitivity or, still worse, negligence. Bullmastiffs are dogs with pride, loyalty, bravery and fidelity. Sometimes they do not know they are hurting or that they did not always the way they do today because of physical disabilities. Sometimes they just do not want to find the way out of the light even when they know it is high time. This is when you as a considerate owner must make the decision that will be hard to live with for many years after, but which must be faced. One thing you must remember is to let your Bullmastiff retain his pride and dignity to the very last. Be gentle and kind, but show him the way out of the hall into the darkness beyond in a way that he will thank you for, so that you can be content in your mind that it was the right time. Social Media Update
Marylu has done a terrific job for us. When she started at the end of June 2020 our Facebook and Instagram presence was dead, moribund. Now we have over 8000 followers and our Instagram followers has doubled.
Well we’ve crept through two months of 2021 already and while COVID still stalks our plans we are faring just about better than anyone on the planet – even the weather has been relatively kind with the promises of many days in the mid to high thirties yet to appear.
Going Places
Seven months ago Dogs Queensland appointed a Social Media Officer to work part-time on a small stipend to manage our social media platforms. This was done because of the increasing importance of social media as a communication and branding tool. Organisations who chose to ignore it would do so at their peril. Often it’s the worst side of social media that attracts attention be it the trolls and or the fake news or baseless conspiracy theories. Some people seem to lose their manners in the relative anonymity of the post. But as a medium of communication and connection it is unsurpassed and its tsunami of popularity means it can’t be ignored but must be engaged enthusiastically and professionally. To underline the latter, we have employed the same social media protocols governing content that the state government uses. After a round of interviews we selected Marylu Lloyd to take care of business. An enthusiastic dog lover and media professional with the Queensland Government’s Office of Industrial Relations and before that with the Queensland department of Justice.

Achieving this takes work and involves creating and designing content, preparing the post, sourcing ideas, topics, video’s, sharing other organisations posts to DQ’s followers, monitoring posts, responses and other sites, promoting Dog World via social media to increase readership and responding to Dogs Queensland public page comments. It also takes the enthusiastic assistance of our membership and Barbara Cumming our Publications Coordinator and Ian Rasmussen our Show and Trials Coordinator for advice, directions and contributions to our social media outreach. Looking forward into 2021 we will be doing more to promote the Dogs Queensland website, our Dog Sports and COVID safe public participation in all our major dog shows across Queensland to grow both our positive brand and membership. We have a number of video stories about some of our wonderful members that will soon be uploaded on our website and social media platforms.
