President’s Message
“
I
t is always important not to wish your life away but I think many of us are happy to say goodbye to 2020 and say hello to 2021. It was a year that set new boundaries and changed domestic and international perspectives about how quickly things can change. I think it encouraged a personal rethink of priorities and brought forward some key initiatives such as working from home and teleconferencing with Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Home schooling has been a new experience with special challenges for many Australian families. Of course our Australian governments have had pandemic response plans in place but I was interested in one report that said that this planning had anticipated the closure of our national border to overseas but not the closure of State and Territory borders. We felt for our Melbourne cousins with the nearly 100 day lockdown and of course there is an ongoing uncertainty about travel south of our border with more closures possibly happening. The heightened focus on staying close to home has added to family demand for dogs. Many of our breeder members have risen to this challenge with a Dogs Queensland record number of litters registered in the months of September, October and November 2020. The increased demand means that our breeders can be even more selective with applicants for their puppies and ensure that they are placed in the very best homes. This is our ethical responsibility and aligns with our Breeders’ Code of Conduct (www.dogsqueensland.org.au/media/2029/code-ofpractice-breeder-final.pdf). If you are a newer breeder of dogs, remember that we have a wealth of breeder experience in our dog world. If you have difficulty sourcing a mentor in your chosen breed please contact the office for a referral. Experienced breeders happy to mentor newer breeders should contact Ian Rasmussen in the office about going on this list. There has been a welcome return to more events and shows over the last few months. Great to see these conformation show weekends happening with the Cairns City Kennel Club, “Easter in December” with the Bundaberg Canine Club Inc, and a number of shows at our Durack facility culminating in the recent well supported 3 night Festive Fiesta and the New Year Shows held by the Atherton Tableland
Kennel Club Inc. A big thank you to all those clubs and their volunteers for making these events and also the supportive puppy training events happen. It has been a joy to many of our members and is most appreciated. On the dog sports front there have been lots of field days and training events happening too. I would like to acknowledge those who have done the hard work behind the scenes and on the day to make these events and shows such a success. COVID has added an additional layer of requirements for clubs and their cooperation and the support of the office and Mrs Sharron Taylor is appreciated. Our directors have been very “hands on” in making these events happen. As members know, the ballot for 6 director positions on the board of our governing body will open on line later this month. Sure, voting is not compulsory, but your right to vote as a member is a precious and important entitlement. It only happens once every two years. Please read the information about each of the 20 nominations carefully and vote for up to 6 directors responsibly. And finally, some special awards happened at 6pm on the middle night of the Festive Fiesta on 30 December. Life memberships of Dogs Queensland were awarded to two All Breeds Judges and long term special contributors to our Dog World, Ms Shaneen Bendixen and Mrs Valerie Spence and to Mrs Christine Gross, who has made a special contribution to fund raising activities for many clubs (page 7). Becoming an all breeds conformation judge is the culmination of many years study and hands on experience and commitment. This wonderful milestone was formally recognised at this event for Mr Lance Wright and Mr Jason Attridge. Congratulations to both these gentlemen on this wonderful achievement (page 7).

GETTING OUT THE VOTE
ACN 160 285 192
Voting commences on Wednesday 20 January 2021, and closes at 5:00pm AEST on Friday 19 February 2021. Voting is so important to the quality of your organisation! Plan to vote and encourage every member you know to do the same. This is YOUR organisation, it’s of YOU and for YOU. It is YOUR money that is being spent – running an election costs thousands of dollars, so why not use it? Of 6,297 members listed as eligible to vote in our last board election in February 2019 only 1349 did – that’s just 21.42% of our membership. We have an enormous pool of talent and knowledge in our membership. YOU can and will make a difference for the better by getting involved and getting out the vote. Like many similar organisations we face a number of issues and we’re not just talking about the pandemic. Our membership is ageing and falling, so we need to grow our brand and reputation. There is so much more we can achieve.

ORIGIN As always when delving into breed history, one can but guess the probable events of early times leading to our present day breeds of dog. In the case of the Weimaraner, it is perhaps a bit easier, for the fact that the forebears of these fine dogs are the Red Schweisshunden is generally agreed upon, just as it is considered to be a fact that the latter trace back to the St. Hubert Hound. The presence of the Red Schweisshund in the Weimaraner’s past also accounts for the colour indigenous to the breed, since a genetic recessive in red and tan dogs can produce a silver-taupe colour (sometimes even appearing almost lavender). It is also an accepted belief that some Pointer stock was very likely introduced into the establishment of the breed, adding to the already present trailing tendencies for pointing and retrieving. Does that not seem logical when one considers how outstanding the modern Weimaraner is in all three roles? The great early sponsor of the forerunner of the modern Weimaraner was the Grand Duke Karl August, head of the Court at Weimar, who was born late in the 18th century. Weimar is the capital city of Thuringia, an area in which several popular breeds had their beginnings. The Weimar Pointer, as the breed at that time was known, had been used originally in big game hunting. With the progress of civilisation, however, a gradual scarcity of this type of game took place, the transition being from wild boar, wolves, bear and so forth, to birds and small game. The strength, tracking skills, speed and courage of the Weimaraner fit in well with the new hunting scheme of things. These dogs, with their natural hunting tendencies, were a joy to work with in the field, ideal hunting companions on land and in water. The Court of Weimar followed the Grand Duke, Karl August, in attempting to perfect the hunting talents of their dogs. As time passed, a group of amateur sportsmen formed a club, the purpose of which was to guard the future of the breed, breeding for the sport of it only. It was necessary to become a member of the club in order to be permitted to purchase a Weimaraner and

to agree to abide by and uphold its rules and policies at all times. The Weimaraner Club of Germany was organised at Erfurt on 20th June 1897. Incredible as it may seem as we regard the present and continuously growing interest in the Weimaraner, there were, at one time, fewer than one thousand of these wonderful dogs in existence. Now popularity is far more likely to become a problem than the threat of extinction! Weimaraners received official recognition from the governing body in Germany in 1896, which included their entry into the German Stud Book. The earliest Standard of the breed was drawn up jointly by the German and Austrian clubs and adopted in 1935. These two clubs worked closely together for the benefit of the breed, assisting each other in every way. The first breeding Weimaraners were imported into Australia in 1955 by Drs. Roma and Chris Kristenson, and later bred under the “Passau” prefix. Many dogs have been brought into the country since then, some having a major
influence on the direction that the breed has taken. To those breeders we can credit today’s Australian Weimaraner. Initially the Weimaraner Longhair could not be exhibited under the original standard, it was not until the mid 1970’s that the Longhair was accepted and was able to be exhibited in the same class as the Weimaraner. Following the adoption of the FCI Standard by the ANKC in 1994, the Longhair became a separate variety and was able to be awarded its own Best of Breed and challenge certificates. Both Weimaraner and Weimaraner Longhair make up the breed in Australia and the continued foresight and dedication of our breeders must maintain and improve the standard of our beloved dogs.
APPEARANCE A medium to large grey hunting dog, the Weimaraner is a functional working type, pleasing in shape, sinewy and very muscular without cumbersome – balance and moderation being the key. They should present a picture

of great driving power, stamina, alertness and balance. Above all, the dog should indicate the ability to work hard in the field. The coat of the short-haired Weimaraner is a strong, very dense smooth lying topcoat without or only with sparse undercoat. The long-haired dog has a soft long topcoat with or without undercoat. It is smooth or slightly wavy with hair at the base of the ear long and flowing. Dogs can be silver, row or mouse grey, as well as shades of these colours with the head and leathers being generally paler. Only small white markings on the chest or toes are permitted and sometimes a more or less defined trace occurs along the back. Eyes are amber in colour, dark to pale (sky-blue in puppies) with an intelligent expression. Round in shape, they are set barely slanting with lids well fitting.
CHARACTERISTICS They are a versatile, easily trained, steady and passionate hunting dog with a remarkable
ability to pick up scent. Ready to seize game and other prey they are good watchdogs without aggressiveness. They are a reliable pointing dog and worker in water with a remarkable inclination to work after the shot. The Weimaraner distinguishes himself in particular by his close attachment to his owner and other persons well known to him. They are a friendly, fearless, protective and obedient dog. The inherent urge in the Weimaraner to protect can also be seen as the result of this close relationship with persons, their family, house and possessions. Aggressive, shy or timid behaviour should not be tolerated. Kindly reproduced from the Australian National Kennel Council Extended Breed Standard

A MEMBER’S STORY – Gaille Perry
I received my first purebred dog, a Border Collie pup from my parents for Christmas in 1962. This was very exciting as he was my first dog and the family’s first purebred. He was a typical active pup, so, in the New Year, we looked around for someone to help me to train him. Someone told me there were classes at Hanlon Park, Stones Corner run by the Obedience Dog Club of Brisbane, so off we went! I have to admit our first experience was not successful – in those days training was correction based using check chains and was on Sunday during the day so there were usually people playing football on the other side of the creek. As you can imagine, my pup’s attention was not on me and I became quite disheartened. We had also started showing, so I dropped out of training for a while to concentrate on that. In 1965 we had achieved our champion title and I decided to have another go at training. This time we were more successful, and, after a lot of encouragement from other trialling members, I entered my first trial under the late Norah Gilbert. Much to my surprise we came third and qualified and I was hooked! Present competitors would find it very hard to believe that my Rab was only the second Border Collie to compete in obedience competitions and the first to attain a CDX title. Most competitors had German Shepherds and the others mostly Gundogs, Labradors and Ivan’s Curly coated Retrievers and a few Dobermanns. The club was always short of instructors (a common problem for dog clubs still I think) so I became the youngest instructor at 18 – chief instructor was the club president Ivan Lock, and other instructors were the secretary Bert Halton and the treasurer Don (Gilbert I think) who had a lovely bicolour German Shepherd bitch. There was great excitement when the club obtained council permission and gathered together the funds to obtain overhead lighting and were able to start Wednesday night training and membership and numbers attending

Gaille Perry with the first Old English Sheepdog litter in Queensland from the first Old English Sheepdog in Queensland with an Obedience title Ch Kersbrook Christobel CD. training increased dramatically. And even more when a piece of land with a large gully through the middle was acquired at Oxley. Being young, I never considered the implications of taking on this level of debt as a small club but it must have caused some sleepless nights for the more senior members of the executive! The land had a little hut on it and Bert moved in there with his enormous male Shepherd Tiki. In those days there were only 3 clubs – ours, the German Shepherd Club (which became Metropolitan and whose president was Norm Claridge) and Ipswich. Everyone knew each other and there was a great sense of camaraderie at trials. As numbers were small, there was only one ring at trials initially, so everyone was at ringside cheering each other on. My Border Collie’s nemesis was Drop

on Recall (he either executed it perfectly or bombed out completely) and I know everyone at ringside was holding their collective breaths hoping he would do it. During the time I was actively involved, the Gold Coast and Toowoomba clubs were established and we all travelled to their initial trials to support them – it seemed a long way on those roads before the advent of highways! The first Toowoomba trial was very hot and, when I came back from one of the out of sight exercises, I found my boy had removed himself from the lineup and had camped under the table – can’t say I blamed him! The obedience fraternity was very excited when we were invited to participate in a demonstration at the Brisbane Royal Show. Rab provided comic relief for the audience when he decided to run under the jump rather than his usual impeccable jump! When I graduated as a veterinarian, I had less time to instruct and compete and my OES Christobel was my last trialling dog – she did
get her CD (the first OES in Queensland to do so) despite a less than serious attitude to the whole thing! I don’t know whether any of the original members are still around – I know a young Bob Bruce and his Lab were in top class with me. And I remember Dave Gillespie in a class I took with his first dog, a Lab X. It was certainly my involvement with Obedience that really sparked my interest in animal behaviour and led to my further studies and work in that area after completing my veterinary degree. So I guess I owe a lot to the Obedience world! As always we are happy to receive your dog tales and stories for possible inclusion in upcoming issues of the Dog World magazine. 1.2 A dog can only be entered in the class and height it would normally be entitled to compete in.
1.3 There will be no separate class, course or Judge for NFC entries.
1.4 NFC will not be available for games i.e., snooker, gamblers and strategic pairs or for open and elite classes in jumpers or agility.
1.5 NFC will not be available for major competitions such as State Titles and/or Nationals.
1.6 NFC entry fee will be the full entry fee for that trial.
2.
TRIAL PROCEDURES
2.2 The Judge will inform the scribe that this is an NFC run and no results will be recorded.
2.1 The competitor must clearly inform the steward that they are competing as NFC. The competitor must also clearly inform the Judge, before the run starts, that they are running NFC. 2.3 The Judge and ring stewards shall still perform their normal duties; however, no scoring shall be recorded for an NFC entry. 2.4 The Judge shall ensure that the conduct of the handler and dog is appropriate and that the course is attempted safely within the rules of agility and the capabilities of the dog. 2.5 At the Judge’s discretion, a dog not under control or obviously not capable of executing any piece of equipment may be asked to leave the ring. 2.6

2.7
A competitor running NFC will only be given time in the ring up to the Standard Course Time (SCT). Timing for NFC will start when the dog negotiates the first obstacle or if the handler triggers the electronic timing gate. In the case of manual timing, the time will start when the first part of the dog’s body crosses the plane of the first obstacle.
2.8
Competitors will be instructed, at judge’s brief, of the method used to indicate when SCT has been reached (e.g., whistle, buzzer etc.). At the end of the SCT, the competitor shall promptly remove their dog from the ring. Not leaving the ring immediately when directed may result, at the Judges’ discretion, in the competitor being disqualified for the remainder of the trial and/ or may be referred for further disciplinary action.
3. Review 3.1 Rules for NFC may be reviewed and modified by the Dogs Queensland Agility Sub Committee at any time as deemed necessary. Members and affiliates will be notified of any changes. SUMMARY

In the second semester of 2020, around 100 second-year students studying architecture at the University of Queensland re-imagined the headquarters and showgrounds for Dogs Queensland’s property in Durack.
DOG WORLD January 2021
The design process was underpinned by analogical consideration of theories of biological evolution versus human histories—of breed, pedigree, ancestry and adaptation versus type, style, precedents and context. Each student identified recurrent formal characteristics in the work of two of fourteen wellknown architects that were allocated to the class. They then had to devise a new architectural style based on the idea of ‘breeding’ from the style of the two architects they had studied. Traces of each project’s architectural parents—Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Aalto, Eisenman, Zaha Hadid, Selgas Cano, and more—can be detected in the student’s architecture. While exploring these conceptual ideas,

the students were also asked to explore the organization of buildings and activities on the site and to come up with pragmatic solutions to a quite complex brief. An additional ambition was to design spaces that were pleasurable for dogs and humans together, be that in an office or a swimming pool. That meant thinking about the size, sensory perception and behaviour of different dogs, as well of humans. While the students are too early in the degree to come up with fully resolved, affordable solutions, it is hoped that their projects might help Dogs Queensland imagine a new future for the Durack site—one in which an iconic clubhouse and selfcontained cabins might be a source of revenue
through tourism and hire. The course was devised and led by Professor Sandra Kaji-O’Grady and taught by a fantastic team of tutors including Jaydn Bowe, Bud Branigan, Lachlan Howe, Natalie Lis, Felix Macnamara, Kali Marnane, and Gail Pini. Briefing from Dogs Queensland was by Ulla Greenwood, President, and Rob Harrison, General Manager. Students Chantel Smith, Riley Pownall, Sheila Brandist and Priya Grimes presented their work to Ulla Greenwood, Duncan McAllister, Barbara Murfet, David Margan and Barbara Cumming. The following pages showcase the student’s design concepts for the Dog Queensland Show Grounds.

SELGASCANO AND BALKRISHNA DOSHI, PRIYA GRIMES s4581804
My design strategy merges the juxtaposing approaches of architects Selgas Cano and Balkrishna Doshi. From my exploration of Doshi’s work, I derived a method of functionality and sensibility; he puts the needs of the end user at the fore front of the design, in a pragmatic and rectilinear solution, with heavy materials organised by a grid. Selgas Cano spaces are vivid, inviting and social. They exploit light weight, bright red, polycarbonate plastic in serpentine pavilions, that play with the filtration of light to enhance interior space, indicate the location of social interaction, and stand as an exterior landmark. Whilst having an eye catching, grand façade, all of my hybrid buildings have been planned using a rectilinear grid to allow for functional movement. I chose to separate the requirements of the brief for the museum, clubhouse, admin building and storage area, into four separate buildings. Each explore variations on the same idea of using Doshi’s thick, modular forms, as a functional skeleton, which is interested by an organic social bubble over the top. Additionally, this site strategy was employed to ensure that interest was
30

distributed across the entirety of the site, so that it could act as one machine organising movement along a defined special choreography. The buildings have been placed along the main road entrance so they can serve as a landmark for Dogs Queensland from the street. In addition, they overlook a dog showground so they can serve a dual purpose as a viewing platform. The storage space has been designed as an adaptable area that can accommodate to the growing needs of Dogs Queensland. The museum has been separated into blocks along an intimate, processional journey under a serpentine, red pavilion, in order to invoke its interest as a prime destination on the site. The clubhouse has a service and public entry to separate the private and social functions of the building. It opts for a long and narrow dining and lounge space so that a greater breadth of the showground can be easily seen. The merging of Doshi and Selgas Cano’s architectural ideas, has produced an approach to the brief that separates functional and rational planning, from the organic nature of social spaces, whilst letting them cohabit and enhance one another in serviceable and experiential spaces.

Riley Pownall When I first visited Dogs Queensland, I was captivated by the beautiful, vast space, surrounded by untouched vegetation. Yet as I explored the site, the intense sun dampened the experience. This influenced one of my major decisions of my project for the new clubhouse/museum/admin building, to create a network of covered walkways which connect the site. The Australian climate is at the forefront of other design decisions too, notably the use of lightweight, natural materials, primarily a cross laminated timber frame which runs the lengths of the pathways. This repeated, trapezoid structure gives a sense of hierarchy, with the pathway growing as it leads towards the central point, where the main clubhouse, admin and museum seamlessly grows out of the path. The Arial isometric depicts the way the structure seamlessly flows with the contours of the site, connecting major regions towards the central clubhouse space. The original clubhouse is retained for use as a storage/workshop facility to retain Dogs Queensland heritage and to act as a more sustainable and affordable option. The collage render shows how Dogs Queensland members are encouraged to use their outdoor spaces, with a seamless border between the undercover courtyard of the clubhouse and the
showgrounds. Indigenous heritage of the area is referenced in the form of hand woven, upwards sliding doors, which can open to accommodate any size, from dachshunds to people.

Chantel Smith The Dogs Queensland site redevelopment project was an enjoyable challenge which really put my creative skills to the test. My goal was to design a site that would make the Dogs Queensland Durack establishment stand out not only in the urban built environment scene, but also as a key place of interest in South-East Queensland’s tourist-scape. I tried to take advantage of the ample space, spectacular surroundings, wonderful views and other unique assets that the Dogs Queensland site offers. The aesthetically pleasing combination of vibrant colours, lush vegetation and modern geometric forms would surely heighten Dogs Queensland’s visibility from the nearby roadways and, thus, entice passers-by to want to learn more about the club. Community, connection and character were among several key considerations in my site strategy. I drew my design inspiration from the works of architects Le Corbusier and Zaha Hadid. I fused ‘traits’ from works by both architects to create a site strategy that is reflective of the Dogs Queensland community’s interests.
Durack property as many things: a community hub, a glorified campsite, a holiday destination, an event venue, a giant pooch playground, and the home of Dogs Queensland. Ultimately, it is a place where community members can come together and create everlasting memories with their pooches. One very important thing that I noticed throughout the duration of this project is that the Dog’s Queensland community values camaraderie. I ensured that every aspect of the site was interconnected to promote social interaction between people and their loyal furry friends. I strived to create a design strategy that catered to – and, in some instances, went beyond - the needs and desires of Dogs Queensland. It was an absolute pleasure to have been given the opportunity to design a fictional site strategy for an organisation who play such a pivotal role in the wider Queensland community.
My site redevelopment proposal portrays the

Sheila Brandist The new development aims to guide people to the showgrounds upon arrival and to accommodate visitors after the show, offering areas to help you relax, refresh and connect. It also aims to generate revenue from hosting functions like weddings and birthdays with accommodation for guests, or a weekend family getaway. The existing driveways and showgrounds are retained for Dogs Queensland to continue its operation during construction and save in development cost. The proposed new development is closer to the entrance. It is excellent for advertising purposes, also making it easier for guests to park and navigate through the building and to the showgrounds. The main building consists of three playful, eye-catching buildings that seem to resemble the form of dogs sitting, standing and stretching. An open deck then joins all three structures with courtyards unifying them, delivering an open and relaxed environment which can accommodate a sudden influx of guests during a major event. Also connecting the three buildings is a roof garden showcasing elevated views of the entire site. Looking from the right of the aerial view, building one is the admin and museum, building two (centre) is the lounge and bar. Lastly, building three holds the dining, stage and kitchen areas. Each building can separately host a function independently from another; this will allow phasing during construction. To attract guests to be involved and truly experience Dogs Queensland, the cabins, buffered by trees, are located right at the heart of the development. Everything is within reach, and guests can be part of the daily activities or
shows and relax during the night. The cabins are rectangular and sit on pilotis with roof gardens, treating stay-in guests to a view of the showgrounds. They are grouped into rows of fives to share walls, access ramps and stairs to build economically. By doing so, it also creates a larger communal area underneath for dog trailers to park and for group gatherings. The whole cabin block can also potentially be hired exclusively by club members when they have special meetings or overnight stays. A large dog park, divided for small and large dogs, is situated between the cabins and the main dining. At the centre of the park is a pool with splash pads for dogs and children to play and cool down during hot days, whilst mum and dad relax at the dining. On the right side of the development, a dog training park sits between the museum and the cabins. Between the showground and the new development are permanent market stalls that double as bleachers for the showgrounds. These can also act as storage areas if the stalls are empty or not rented. Whilst a larger storage area for large equipment is located at the top of the showgrounds together with the workshop with limited access to store personnel and people who are involved in the workshop. Zaha Hadid and Le Corbusier, two great architects, have significant influence over the shape, materials of the building and the overall site development. Zaha is well known for her defining curves, and Le Corbusier for his modern rectilinear form. Both styles have created a sophisticated cutting edge structure and site development for Dogs Queensland that turned out to be unique.

fall from heights Joanne Bibby – Fursafe® The term fall from heights conjures up a dog falling from a multi-storey building and so you probably think it has no relevance to you. However, did you know that a fall from a lounge suite can be classified as a fall from heights. A fall from height is where a dog falls from one level to another without control and in turn, sustains an injury. An injury which may be minor or so severe that it could be life-threatening. A fall can be as a consequence of something as simple as a

impact of a fall Only the other day Isabeau, my Silky Terrier, stood like a meercat on the edge of the bed trying to look out the window; lost her balance and toppled to the floor. Fortunately, the only thing she hurt was her pride! A fall may not impact your dog at all – some dogs are quite able to hop up and down off furniture or vehicles, some dogs are champions on the agility course but what if they fall the wrong way, slip or trip; or maybe they were unwell and you didn’t know it at the time. And then there are dogs who may immediately hurt themselves – they could be small, elderly, overweight and unfit or just at the awkward stage of being a puppy.

How to socialise a dog after a lockdown
– Royal Canin If you’ve been self-isolating or unable to leave the house as much as you’d like to during a lockdown, you may need to spend extra time re-socialising your dog or puppy as normal life begins to resume again. During the pandemic, people will have been staying at home for longer periods than usual. As a result, some people may have decided to purchase or adopt a puppy or dog. While all that extra time together can help strengthen the bond you share and make training simpler, it does mean there could be fewer opportunities for exploring and experiencing the world outside. Similarly, dogs that were previously socialised may find situations have changed during the lockdown – encountering more joggers and cyclists on their walks, for example. Dogs will also
36
DOG WORLD January 2021
likely be aware of people wearing a mask, which considerably changes the visual signs they often use to recognise expressed emotions. That’s why, as normal life begins to resume, you should try to familiarise or reintroduce them to different experiences through dog socialisation and familiarisation training.
Why is dog socialisation important? Socialisation is a process of learning in which your puppy is introduced to the world. Any new experience you share with them is part of this socialisation and contributes to their ability to master communication. It could be meeting a new person or another dog, getting in a car, hearing a hairdryer, or just going to a new location. “Appropriate socialisation helps them to relax and enjoy life, equips them with the resilience to cope well with the huge variety of experiences
DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!
and events they will encounter and enables them to become rewarding pets. ” (Author — Waltham Pet Care Science Institute) The main socialisation period occurs during the first few weeks of your puppy’s life, however, it’s important to continue socialisation and familiarisation even when they’re an adult dog. Without socialisation, a dog may become fearful or even aggressive in unfamiliar situations.
Each new interaction they have with a dog, a person, or within their environment, will act as a reference point in their later life. The more positive experiences they have as a puppy, the more comfortable they’ll be as an adult. But negative experiences will have a lasting impact too, so just like you would with an older dog, you should socialise them carefully by constantly watching their behaviour during an experience and managing their response.
When should I begin dog socialisation training? Dogs are at their most receptive when they’re puppies, aged between 3 and 14 weeks. During this period, they’re quick to form attachments with others and are particularly sensitive to their environment. Your veterinarian can provide the best advice regarding when your puppy is ready for socialisation (based on their age and vaccinations). While these early encounters play a huge role in a dog’s future emotional balance, dog socialisation doesn’t end at 14 weeks. They will keep learning throughout their life and their reactions to familiar situations may change – a young dog may be comfortable being in a car at first but a negative experience may make them anxious later on. Likewise, adult dogs who were under-socialised as puppies can learn new behaviours and become comfortable in previously stressful situations. However, it does require a different approach to socialising puppies.
If you’ve been unable to take your puppy outside as often as you’d like, due to the lockdown, you might begin by carrying them around outside, visiting a friend’s home (if allowed), or interacting with dogs you know are fully vaccinated and wellbehaved. Social distancing does make puppy and dog socialisation harder than before, but you can still observe the world together and interact with people and other dogs from a safe distance. Always try to pace your socialisation training to suit your puppy’s comfort level – some have innate behaviours that make them naturally anxious. Ask your vet for individual advice about your puppy.
Socialising adult dogs Unfortunately, not every dog will be properly socialised as a puppy. You may have adopted an older dog who was always kept inside, or perhaps your puppy was
How to socialise a puppy Your veterinarian can provide the best advice regarding when a puppy is ready for socialisation (based on their age and vaccinations status) and you can then build on the socialisation basics taught by the puppy’s mother. The aim is to expose your puppy to as many new sensations as possible while they’re still under 14 weeks; to let them see, hear, touch and smell the world around them.

separation anxiety in dogs.
How to socialise an older dog It’s important to be realistic when socialising adult dogs. If they missed out as a puppy, they’ll be starting from a disadvantage and it may not be possible to make them comfortable with everything they encounter. Depending on your dog’s background, your goal might just be to introduce enough stimuli so they can feel safe and secure in their immediate environment and not the entire world at large. The key thing to remember is not to rush an older dog. They won’t absorb new experiences like a puppy, so you must work at a pace that suits them. You also should consider if they’re in any pain (e.g. arthritis) or have a mental impairment that will make socialisation difficult for them. If you think this is the case, do not hesitate to talk to your vet who can provide some advice.
too ill to explore the world when they were young. You may even have been trapped indoors with your puppy during a lockdown. Whatever the reason, if your dog misses that early window, you’ll find introducing unfamiliar experiences to them more challenging once they’re older. But it’s certainly still possible for your dog to progress with some patience and a slow and steady approach.
Social anxiety in dogs If your dog becomes nervous or aggressive when other dogs or people are around, perhaps barking or looking for an opportunity to escape, it may be a sign that they need to be socialised. You may also find new behaviours develop over time or appear with a change in routine. A dog adopted during the pandemic will have grown used to you being around and may experience separation anxiety when they’re left alone. They may also have grown cautious of other dogs after so much time indoors. Learn more about

The best way to begin is to find an environment in which your dog is already comfortable, and slowly progress from there. For example, if you’re trying to introduce friends and family, have them approach your leashed dog slowly and one at a time, keeping their voices low and calm. Let them give your dog toys and if they show any anxiety, end the session and try another time. It’s important to finish a socialisation session positively, so remember to bring toys and treats. Encouragement, positivity, and patience will play a big role in your dog’s socialisation – as will rewards! Any time they make progress or try to conquer their fears, reward them with praise and their favourite toy or treat. Just remember to limit the number of treats you give and reduce the size of their main meals to balance their food intake. Socialising adult dogs can take a long time, and you may encounter setbacks along the way. Don’t be discouraged though, as the long term benefit to both you and your dog will be worth the time and effort. Please always consult with your veterinarian as they are the best resource to support you regarding socialising your puppy or dog.
