President’s Message A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens (1859)

I

t was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, … it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. I love this opening line referring to the aftermath of the French Revolution and believe in some ways it does describe the challenges of the last year with COVID-19 and the global hope that comes with the rollout of the vaccines. I know that finances are not everything, but to turn around the $104k loss of 2019 to a credit of $623k in a pandemic year puts Dogs Queensland in a good position to face the continuing challenges with the pandemic in 2021. Dogs Queensland’s current financial position with our wonderful grounds may well be the envy of our colleague bodies in other States. Dogs Queensland has had some seismic shifts with the composition of the Board over the last two elections. In 2019 Mrs Barb Murfet was the only sitting director returned. In this 2021 election Mr David Weil was similarly the only re-nominating director who was voted in. The 2019 election followed some unhappiness over a Board proposal to buy a former Masters property at Parkinson and sell our Durack property. I felt the need to take steps to make sure that any such proposal could only occur with a favourable vote of the members. As one of the newly elected 2019 directors I was elected President at the first Board meeting, no doubt with a view to helping heal some of the earlier unhappiness. Although it has been a challenging couple of years on a number of fronts, I can say that your Board has actively worked in the best interests of our wider dog world. Although we don’t always agree (which is a good thing), we have each brought our own experience, dog world background and independent views to the table in all our Board discussions. In a spirit of cooperation, the directors have discharged their serious responsibilities under the

Corporations Law and looked to achieving the best outcomes possible for our dog world and members. This has been especially so in these troubling COVID times and I take this opportunity to thank the current Board for working effectively together. Being a director of the Canine Control Council (Qld) Ltd is a totally voluntary and unpaid commitment for 4 years. It is a special way to give back to the dog world. I thank all 20 members who nominated at this last election and decided it was something they were prepared to do. May we continue to attract members with a wide range of skills and backgrounds to director positions. As a director you don’t just represent your chosen canine discipline/s in your zone. You have responsibility for all our disciplines and the good functioning of Dogs Queensland right across Queensland, so it is a great opportunity to increase your knowledge of our dog world and the challenges we face. On behalf of all our members and the Board I would like to thank the outgoing five directors for the substantial contribution they have made over the last number of years. It is hoped that they will continue their valued involvement in our dog world. Mr Shane Thomas A former President of Dogs Queensland, Shane brought his professional accountancy skills to the Board table. His contributions were always soundly based with a good common sense approach. Behind the scenes too, Shane has always been a very generous supporter of our wider dog world. Mr Bill Smith The current Senior Vice President of Dogs Queensland and Director of the ANKC Ltd, Bill is the Chair of the Conformation Judges Committee and has successfully caused conformation judge training and assessment to continue during 2020 despite the

challenges of limited events with the pandemic. Ms Ainslie Carius Another former President of Dogs Queensland, Ainslie has served on various iterations of the Board for more than 13 Years. Ainslie has consistently brought her legal and HR skills to the Boardroom table with valuable input. Ainslie has also been the key person in the staging of many conformation show events. Ainslie works tirelessly up front on numerous committees and also behind the scenes. I sincerely hope that she will continue her valuable dog world involvement. Mr Duncan McAllister A very practical man, Duncan has brought his wealth of dog world experience and work skills to the table. He is outcome orientated and has been extremely valuable as the director responsible for grounds liaison. He has helped oversee the progress of many projects, ranging from the revitalisation of the rings and lure coursing field to the correction of structural faults with our clubhouse. More recently, I have found him invaluable in attending meetings with me with the Queensland government over our concerns with the Breeder Identification Number scheme and breeder related issues. Mr Lawrie Knauth Lawrie has an extensive past and current background in the very many dog sports disciplines and brings his common sense approach to the Boardroom table. He has also had a director involvement with grounds liaison. In addition, Lawrie has played an integral role in organising the All Dogs Sports Spectacular, judge training and effectively chairing the Retrieving and Field Trial Committee. The New Directors I would like to extend congratulations to the following five new members of the Board whose appointments will be confirmed at the Annual General Meeting of the Canine Control Council (Qld) Ltd on Wednesday 31 March, 2021-: Ms Carolyn Ryan Ms Carolyn Pearen Ms Mandy Schelbach Ms Netta Bainbridge Mrs Vicki Schneider

Breed Feature

THE SCHNAUZER

All Schnauzers need consistent training, boundaries, exercise and most take a lifetime to grow up, but put in the work and you will have the most amazing companion. All Schnauzers had their origin in the neighbouring kingdoms of Wuttemburg & Bavaria, Germany from the 14th to 16th centuries, the term Schnauze comes from the German word for “snout” and means colloquially “moustache” or “whiskered snout”, because of the dogs distinctively bearded snout. Initially it was called Wire-Haired Pinscher, while

8

DOG WORLD March 2021

Schnauzer was adopted in 1879. There are three sizes, the Schnauzer (use to be known as the Standard Schnauzer), Giant Schnauzer and Miniature Schnauzer. The Schnauzer being the original, a medium sized dog. It is not a terrier and was not developed to go to ground. They performed household and farm

duties, drove the livestock, guarded family and carts when they travelled to market and were also excellent ratters. During WW1,they were used to carry dispatches and aid Red Cross workers. They were first exhibited in Hanover in 1879, the breed standard was written in 1880 and the first Speciality Show was held at Stuttgart in 1890. Characterized by a robust, square, athletic build, with a wiry harsh coat being either Salt & Pepper or Black in colour, they should be alert, sociable, affectionate and protective in nature. They are very intelligent, strong willed and owners must be prepared to train their new puppy from the beginning but they will make outstanding, devoted companions for the whole family. The Giant Schnauzer, known throughout history as the Russian Bear Schnauzer, Munich Schnauzer and Reisenschnauzer, is thought to have come from crosses between dogs such as the black Great Dane, Bouvier des Flandres and the Schnauzer. The Bavarian cattlemen came across the Schnauzer in Stuttgart, although impressed by this dog they needed a larger specimen for cattle, hence the Giant evolved. It was not only used on the land but later as a guard dog and by the military police. Giants in Europe are used for police work. In the USA and` Canada they are used for rescue work and at airports for drug detection. The Giant was practically unknown outside Bavaria until the end of the first decade of this century. Some were found guarding butchers and stockyards. Just before WW1, when their numbers were greatly decreased during the fighting did the Giant began to get attention in Germany as a suitable dog to receive police training. The breed proved such an intelligent pupil that police work has been its main occupation. Their progress in the USA has been very slow as it made its appearance there at the time the German Shepherd was reaching its peak. The Bavarian dog had little chance to make headway against such a wellestablished breed as the German Shepherd. The Giant is not the breed for everyone, they are a powerful, dominant dog that in the wrong hands could easily go haywire but treated the correct way, you will have an oversized clown who will protect, play with and adore you. To achieve the scaling down of the Schnauzer to the Miniature Schnauzer, it is speculated that the Affenpinscher, Miniature Pinscher and perhaps the Miniature Poodle were used. They were originally bred to be rat catchers and guard dogs. They have four colours: Salt and Pepper, Black, Black and Silver and more recently White. The first record of a mini is in 1888, which was a black female called Findel. They were first imported into America in 1924, reached the UK in 1928 and introduced to Australia in 1962.

10

DOG WORLD March 2021

The Mini Schnauzer is intelligent, energetic, affectionate and loyal. The breed is capable of ratting and general farm work but is more likely to be a companion dog however given the opportunity they will certainly eradicate any vermin in your yard or house. They are smart and stylish with a harsh, easily workable coat which will appeal to the show fanciers who enjoy the grooming challenge and the satisfaction from a job well done. They can be vocal but not aggressive and has a personality that

is much larger than the dog himself. All three sizes require regular grooming, if being shown a Schnauzer must be hand stripped, with scissored furnishings and face, while pets can be clipped. They all must have their furnishings and beard brushed around twice a week, the Miniatures are notorious for knots and matting so it is important to maintain them. Today Schnauzers are still not only doing police, Army and drug work, they make great Therapy dogs for the elderly as well as children. There

was also a Schnauzer that could detect cancer. Schnauzers are very capable of and excel at Obedience, Agility, Lure Coursing and Scent work. They just love to work and be with you, not stuck in a backyard with nothing to do, because you will probably come home to a renovated yard, Schnauzer style! All Schnauzers need consistent training, boundaries, exercise and most take a lifetime to grow up, but put in the work and you will have the most amazing companion.

A MEMBER’S STORY

A GREAT HOLIDAY

WITH YOUR DOG

– Ann Shannon (DWD Club Member/Judge)

I just spent a terrific four-day holiday on the Gold Coast with my red and white Border Collie ‘Indianajones’. The Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park is located opposite Movie World – only a 15-minute drive down the M1 from where we live at Eagleby. They have 20 cabins and cottages that are pet friendly. The entire park is on 32 acres and has almost 300 caravan/camping sites including on-site accommodation as well. Our accommodation was a two-bedroom cottage with an open plan layout - two bunks in one bedroom as well as a master bedroom. All the accommodation is beautifully buried in tropical jungle foliage.

TWO-BEDROOM COTTAGE

The huge off-lead dog park was terrific – there were also long walks beside the river and country trails to explore. Best of all was that dogs are allowed at two tables right next to the pool allowing us to have lunch together. The cafe is licenced and opened daily from 7am.

HUGE OFF-LEAD DOG PARK

We compete in Tricks, Dances With Dogs (DWD) and also train in Scent Work so we had lots of time for training and trying new things. If you want a good holiday with your dog, this is the place. Each pet friendly accommodation holds two pets and six people. Imagine this place for a workshop or seminar – even a dog show!!

Social Media Update Well we’ve crept through two months of 2021 already and while Covid still stalks our plans we are faring just about better than anyone on the planet, even the weather has been relatively kind with the promises of many days in the mid to high thirties yet to appear. As many of you now know our past financial year has seen a five star performance, with a recorded profit of over $500,000. This is a sharp factual riposte to the small number of negative voices on social media who have made all sorts of fanciful, fact less claims about the financial health and management of Dogs Queensland.

And you can help by simply hitting the, LIKE button. What may seem like a fairly simple and basic feature is actually one the most powerful online tools ever created. I won’t bore you with the algorithms of this revolution in communication but just hitting the LIKE button keeps our community fresh and alive. • They help reinvigorate a dead fan base. • Your responses encourage others to respond and spread our brand. • New followers are potentially new members. People don’t use social networks for a one-way experience. They’re seeking connections — with people and with us. Even the U.S. State Department spent $630,000 from 2011 to 2013 to garner Facebook likes.

Looking ahead into the mysteries of 2021 it’s important to remember, one thing, you our members are our most powerful weapon, it is you who will drive our success, our excellence and our reputation.

LIKES on social media platforms such as Facebook increase our credibility. If someone LIKES a page on Facebook or a witty post on Twitter, that person’s followers are more likely to both see and be interested in what the person or Dogs Queensland has to say.

In that spirit, there are two simple things you can do or do more of.

We don’t have to spend a cent – all you need is a little pressure from the index finger!!

One is put your hand up and volunteer with your local kennel club.

Have a great month!

There are many ways you can help, just your presence sometimes can make a world of difference to our hard working members attending to all the tasks associated with running our associations. According to all the studies Australians are very good at putting their hand up and those studies also clearly show that volunteering is very good for your health. We are a community and communities that help each other and work together are not only more successful but much happier places. The second simple thing you can do as a member of Dogs Queensland is support our social media platforms. With Marylu Lloyd at the helm providing great content our social media platforms have come alive and we are steadily growing the numbers who follow Dogs Queensland.

Canine Ehrlichiosis: Advice for dog owners

A small number of dogs brought into Queensland from the Northern Territory have tested positive for Ehrlichia canis. Biosecurity Queensland is working with the dogs’ owners to ensure the dogs receive appropriate care and treatment and do not pose a risk to other dogs. Dogs become infected when bitten by an infected brown dog tick. Infection causes the disease ehrlichiosis, which can be fatal if not treated quickly and properly. Since May 2020, infected dogs have been found throughout the Northern Territory and in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of northern Western Australia. Infected ticks have also been found in APY lands (Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara) in northern South Australia. Even though E. canis has not been found in dogs of Queensland origin, to protect your dog you should:

• maintain your dog on an effective external tick control therapy that kills ticks on contact and stops them attaching to the dog – seek advice from your veterinarian on effective tick

prevention and control options.

• avoid taking your dog into tick-infested areas, such as the bush, as much as possible

• regularly inspect your dog for ticks.

Even if you are taking these steps, if you are moving your dog from an area where E. canis is known to be active you should also assess your dog’s health before entering Queensland. If your dog has not been on a tick prevention program, is unwell, or you are unsure seek veterinary advice. Testing dogs prior to movement into Queensland will help ensure only healthy dogs are moved and E. canis is not introduced. People moving or bringing dogs from interstate or adopting rescue dogs should always ask questions about where the animals came from, their health status and what tick prevention they have been on prior to bringing them to Queensland. Speak to your veterinarian about protecting your dog from ticks. Click here to read more.

Should you shave your pet for summer? – Petcover Group As summer is now in full swing and the days are longer and hotter, we tend to shed clothes until we are down to shorts or swimsuits. As a responsible pet owner, we want what is best for our furry friends. However, is it a good idea to shave your pet to reduce the effects of the heat? Does it really keep them cool and protected? FURRY INSULATION A pet’s coat is designed by nature, similar to the insulation for your house. It keeps them cool in summer and warm in the winter months. If you shave your pet, you’re interfering with their inbuilt temperature system which can lead to discomfort and overheating. Not only does your pet’s hair control their body temperature, it also prevents sunburn and helps protect them from skin cancer. Cats receive no benefit from being shaved as they are extremely good at controlling their body temperature and usually have more freedom to seek shade and cool spots on hotter days. Dogs, on the other hand, tend to be more mobile and some breeds have thicker coats than most. There is no need to shave your dog, however, if they do have a thick coat, it can be a good idea to cut their coat short while still leaving about an inch of hair to protect their skin from the sun. If you prefer to not cut your thick coated dog’s hair, remember to brush them regularly as they tend to shed more in summer to make their coats lighter. Brushing your dog’s hair along with bathing them allows for better air circulation for your pet and keeps them happier and healthier in summer! PET HAIRCUTS If you do plan on shaving or cutting your pet’s hair short for summer, here are some simple tips to remember: •

Get it cut professionally – for your pet’s safety and to ensure a proper summer haircut, it is wise to use a professional groomer as they know how much hair to leave to protect your pet during the warmer months.

• Keep the clipper cool – if you do decide to cut your

pet’s hair yourself, it is important to take regular breaks to keep your clippers from overheating and burning your pet.

• Leave an inch of hair – at the very least, leave an inch of hair to protect your pet from sunburn and cold summer nights. • Never shave close to the skin – this will not only raise the risk of sunburn, it can also lead to irregular hair growth and skin problems. LEAVING YOUR PETS FURRY COAT For some pet owners, cutting your pet’s coat short may be a problem. If this is the case, here are some everyday tips to keep your pet cool during summer: •

Never leave your pet in a parked car – it gets extremely hot very fast inside a car in summer. Do not leave your pet in a car no matter how quick you think you will be, it can potentially be deadly.

Never ending water – always make sure your pet has ample water. You can buy automatic refilling water bowls if your pet tends to drink a lot or even bowls that can’t be tipped over for those clumsy pets. Keep their bowls in a shady area so they’re not drinking hot water.

• Shelter – pets love to be cool and can only do so properly with shade and shelter from the sun. •

Keep pets inside during extreme temperatures – really hot days can be hard for pets to cool themselves, therefore if possible, it is best to bring them inside with you.

• Brush your pet – by doing this regularly, it removes dead undercoat and allows their coat to lighten up, keeping them cooler. A pet’s coat is there for protection and temperature control, so talk to a vet or a groomer before you decide to do anything drastic with their hair. If you are starting to see signs of your pet overheating it is important to act quickly and get them to the Vets as soon as possible.

WHAT IS BARN HUNT? The ANKC National Committee is investigating and researching opportunities to bring Barn Hunt, a new dog sport, to Australia. Regular training days are already being held at Dog Queensland, Durack. If introduced, Barn Hunt will lie within the discipline of Earth Dog. Only specified small breeds, including Terriers and Dachshunds, can compete in Earth Dog whereas in Barn Hunt any dog can compete. The activity remains the same as in Earth Dog, where a dog’s natural instinct is tested to locate and quarry vermin or similar in a simulated environment. Open to all breeds and abilities Barn Hunt welcomes canines of all sizes and impairments. It is particularly suited to earth dog breeds who do not meet the size criteria, other terriers and breeds who display the required instincts, including older dogs who are not agile enough for the more active form of the sport. To register your interest or would like additional information, contact Kim Dawson at kimmaree1@hotmail.co.uk

Earth Dog Update The Earth Dog Sub Committee have enjoyed a number of get-togethers at Durack in the hope of instigating renewed interest in the sport. There are moves underway to revive the Earth Dog area including a general clean-up and re-fence so that competitions can resume as soon as possible. A progress update will be shared with members in due course.

LEY JAMES – RETIRING CCKC PRESIDENT

ABOVE (L-R): GORDON MAYNE, LEY JAMES, AMY EDEN, IAN ALLEN WITH THE LEY JAMES CANINE ARENA SIGN SOON TO BE MOUNTED AT THE CLUB.

– Gordon Mayne

At the Cairns City Kennel Club Inc’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday, 30 January 2021, Ley James hung up the President’s dog lead after 35 years as in role. The club members and invited guests celebrated Ley’s incredible contribution to the club and the canine community at a special ceremony after the meeting. The club moved to its current location in the Cairns Show Grounds over 40 years ago. Ley was instrumental in leading the construction and development of the club’s facilities including the club house, grounds and shade shelters. Ley was known for utilising his community connections to get the job done with the minimal of fuss and was always ready to roll up his sleeves when the going got tough. In a letter from Ulla Greenwood, President of Dogs Queensland said “Ley’s contribution to the “Dog World” in Far North Queensland and Queensland as a whole has been nothing short of extraordinary.” Ley’s community involvement doesn’t stop at the Cairns City Kennel Club. He is an all-breeds dog show judge and has judged at dog shows across Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Taiwan. Ley has held positions on the Dog Queensland and the Conformation Judges Sub-Committee leading the training development of new dog show judges.

Incoming President, Gordon Mayne, is looking forward to working with club members; “Ley has laid some incredible foundations for the club’s future. It’s a great club with an amazing team of dedicated members. We can only go from strength to strength.” You will also see Ley at the Cairns Show Association where he has the role of VicePresident and Chair of the Livestock Committee. He has been a member of the association since 1980. OVER 60 MEMBERS AND GUESTS ATTENDED THE CCKC ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND SPECIAL PRESENTATION.

Ley is a Life Membership of the Cairns City Kennel Club, and Mareeba and District Kennel Club, Canine Control Council of Queensland (Dogs Queensland), Cairns Show Association and the Norwich Terrier Club of the United Kingdom. In recognition of Ley’s outstanding contribution, Councillor Amy Eden formally named the club grounds the Ley James Canine Arena in the presence of over 60 members. Ian Allen, President of the Cairns Show Association, acknowledged Ley’s long time dedication and support to the Cairns community and said “it was only fitting that the grounds he established be named in his honour.” BELOW: THE CCKC KITCHEN CREW ALWAYS PUT ON A FANTASTIC SPREAD AT CLUB EVENTS.

identification

Most dog owners have heard about Pancreatitis, however, for those who are new to owning a dog, or the term, Pancreatitis is defined as an inflamed pancreas.

Identifying pancreatitis can be a little tricky at first because the signs and symptoms may appear closer to a less than serious condition.

definition The Pancreas: is a vital organ in the dog’s body which secretes digestive enzymes. These enzymes break down the food your dog eats so that the body can absorb crucial nutrients. The pancreas is located near the dog’s stomach. itis: is a term that denotes inflammation of an organ and in this case, the pancreas. Pancreatitis, if left untreated, or allowed to go unchecked for a long period, can cause damage to the pancreas and other organs such as the Liver and / or Kidneys.

You need to air on the side of caution and assume it could be pancreatitis; especially if the external factors are present;

• what has your dog recently eaten, is it high in fat? or • is the bin knocked over and scraps are visible, what food was in there? Familiarise yourself with the signs and symptoms. Remember that symptoms can show up over a very short period of time. If you suspect Pancreatitis transport your dog to the Vet without delay.

Speak to your Vet if you would like to know how the pancreas works and the consequences of it not being treated.

causes of Pancreatitis

In short, it is imperative that dog owners become familiar with the signs and symptoms of Pancreatitis because it is a condition, which if not treated by a Veterinarian urgently, has the potential to be life-threatening.

• Your dog may be obese • Eat or have eaten fatty foods • Sustained trauma to the abdomen • Has a diagnosed medical condition which may

Your dog’s pancreas may become inflamed for the following reasons, but not limited to:

exacerbate the inflammation

• Your dog may have a predisposition to

Pancreatitis such as:

Miniature Schnauzers, Poodles, Cocker Spaniels Please note that any dog can experience Pancreatitis

signs & symptoms If you know what your dog looks like when they are well, you can tell when they don’t

• Loss of appetite, their food is untouched • Not drinking much or any water; if you

undertake a secondary assessment 1.

Undertake a dehydration test: Do the pinch test on their skin, does it spring back under 2 seconds? Or test their capillary refill – touch the gum above their teeth press and release, does it return to normal colour under 2 seconds?

2. Take your dog’s temperature to see if it is in normal range 3. Call your Vet if you are in anyway unsure If your dog shows typical signs and symptoms, before you start driving, as set out above: 1. Undertake Primary Assessment a.

Check the airway for blockages or foreign objects; remove if there is. If your dog has been vomiting finger swipe or use a tongue depressor to scoop out the vomit.

• Your dog may appear depressed when usually

b.

Check the breathing (respirations) e.g., count the rise and fall of the chest – start artificial respiration if not breathing. Is the breathing normal or shallow, fast or not breathing? Monitor all the way to the Vet!

• ever; they may be hot to touch or shivering;

c. Check circulation (pulse) – does your dog have a pulse? – start CPR if no pulse.

• Your dog may be vomiting and / or have

2. Treat for Shock; Wrap dog in blanket securely and place in create or box; raise their bottom by placing a blanket underneath them

are unsure if they have been drinking do a dehydration test (see action below). A good idea is to fill the water bowl to the very brim every morning; this way you can see if / how the water level changes.

• Weakness/lethargy with possible sounds of

discomfort like whimpering they are upbeat

take their temperature, if it is not normal then get to the Vet diarrhoea; make sure you inspect the fluids and take note what it looks like; take a sample to the Vet

• If your dog is bleeding (shows up in their

diarrhoea), their gums will also be discoloured and pale

• When they react to touch around the belly or

are hunched over, you can assume they have a stomach complaint

• You may notice your dog is having a hard time breathing

• Their heartbeat may be irregular • Your dog may go into shock, so treat for shock

regardless of signs, (see action below).

3. Speak soothingly and stroke to keep calm and quiet 4. Transport to Vet 5.

If you are on your own driving your dog to the Vet; you will likely be very distracted by your dog’s condition, however you must be vigilant on the road

If you have someone to drive you:

• Sit in the back with your dog • Monitor during transport to vet to make sure your dog is breathing

• If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial

respiration

action

• If your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR

If your dog is not showing typical signs and symptoms and appears relatively alert then

A healthy weight starts with healthy habits A healthy weight is key to your dog’s general health and wellbeing. Over this and the next three editions of the magazine Dogs Queensland will publish four simple ways to maintain that healthy weight and keep your dog in good shape, courtesy of Royal Canin. We begin with Healthy Portioning followed by Shape (April), Activity (May) and Growth (June).

Weight Management – Healthy Portioning HEALTHY PORTIONS ARE SMALLER THAN YOU THINK Many pet owners think their dog needs more food than it really does. This means that many dogs are overfed which can cause weight gain and lead to other health issues.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT PORTION SIZE FOR MY DOG? A healthy weight is maintained by achieving the right balance between energy intake and energy output. So the correct portion size for your dog can be different from any other dog, even if it is the same breed. The starting point is to follow the feeding guide given by the most food you have selected which is most relevant to your dog. However, a number of factors may also need to be taken into consideration when determining the portion size, recommended feeding quantities for cats are often just guidelines. Firstly, consider the size of your dog. A small breed such as a Chihuahua will require a very different amount of calories from a Great Dane. Try to choose a product which is designed for your breed or size of dog. Next, think about their activity levels; are they a

46

DOG WORLD March 2021

working dog or do they spend most time indoors with short walks during the day? If you have any concerns about what quantities to feed your dog, please contact your local vet for specific advice.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY PORTIONING Your dog’s portion size plays a big part in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. No matter how much they exercise, if a dog’s portion is too large, they will still be prone to putting on weight. Keep in mind, recommended feeding quantities for dogs are often just guidelines. The amount of food your dog requires may change throughout their life. For example, if your dog gains weight, you may wish to alter their daily calorie intake to counter this. As your dog grows older and becomes less active, then their food

portions may shrink with their reduced energy requirements. It’s important to consult your vet if you are ever unsure about your dog’s portion size.

WHY IS MY DOG BEGGING? If your dog seems to be asking you for food all the time, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hungry. This apparent taste for tidbits may actually be a habit, a sign of boredom or attention seeking. Giving in to begging can reinforce this behaviour. That being said, if your dog continues to show food seeking behaviour, this could also be a sign of illness. They may not be absorbing the necessary nutrients from their food. Parasites such as worms can cause symptoms of increased appetite, constant hunger, sometimes combined with weight loss. If signs of begging or consistent hunger persist, it’s important to consult your vet to rule out any underlying issues.

TIPS TO MAINTAIN PORTION SIZES FOR YOUR DOG Maintaining healthy portion sizes for your dog may feel tricky, however there are a number of things you can consider to make sure you’re not overfeeding your dog. Once you’ve identified your dog’s correct portion size, use weighing scales for each meal to maintain accurate quantities every time. It’s easy to underestimate how much you’re actually feeding your dog. Don’t add human food to your dog’s ration as this may upset the nutritional balance and calorie intake they require. If you’re giving your dog treats, take note of the calories and subtract these from their daily portion to make sure they aren’t overeating. Treats should take up no more than 10% of a dog’s daily rations. Alternatively, taking kibbles from your dog’s rations to use as treats means you can be confident that your dog is getting the right balance of nutrients as well as maintaining the correct amount of calories.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP CITATION – ANN SHANNON

This award of Life Membership of the Dances with Dogs Club Queensland is made to recognise the exceptional contribution of Ann Shannon to the operation of the Club over the 10 plus years of its existence. Ann was a foundation member of the Club when it was established in 2009, and has actively contributed to the Club since that time. She has continuously served as a member of the Management Committee, and has undertaken the huge task of Competition Secretary/Manager, managing the organisation of all our DWD competitions. She has also been a DWD judge for those 10 years and has occasionally managed time to compete herself. For the three years 2016 to 2018, Ann was President of the Club. In addition to specific roles Ann has held, she has undertaken a myriad of other tasks to support the effective functioning of the Club and its events. Ann has also kindly made the private donation of title trophies annually. Although not strictly relevant to the criteria, since they were undertaken in a private/business capacity rather than on behalf of DWDCQ, it should be acknowledged that these activities all followed Ann’s initiativeof bringing first Mary Ray, then Richard Curtis and other international Heelwork to Music/ Canine Freestyle presenters, to Camp Tailwaggers, thereby introducing us all to DWD and enabling us to develop our training, choreography and performance skills in DWD. She also facilitated a group of DWD enthusiasts’ travel to Crufts, particularly to see Heelwork to Music in that fabulous arena. In a private capacity, Ann also produces a monthly DWD newsletter, which keeps readers informed of DWD activities not only in Queensland but across Australia.

Awarded at the Dances with Dogs Club Queensland Annual General Meeting, 7 February 2021
