hat’s yellow-green, soft, sometimes powdery, and can often be found covering our pets? TREE POLLEN. Beginning in mid-March and lasting through mid-May, pollen from San Antonio’s abundant oak trees blankets our vehicle windshields, patio furniture, sidewalks, and, yes, our beloved pets. It is often much easier, however, to spot tree pollen on a window than on Fido.

BY DR. PATRICIA DINGER

Oak and other spring pollens cling to our pets’ fur and often go unseen, stealthily being carried into our homes via our pets. If a pet likes to snuggle on the couch, bed, or worse, pillow - chances are, he’s depositing some of that pollen smack dab where those allergic want it least. Pollen can trigger allergy symptoms such as red, swollen, and sometimes sore eyes, sneezing, a runny nose, itchy throat or skin, and a light rash, among other symptoms. People take medication to reduce these symptoms. However, additional exposure to pollen counter acts the use of medications and will result in increased symptoms. That’s why I suggest to my patients that during peak tree pollen periods, such as spring, they take steps to minimize pets from bringing pollen into the home, and especially, into the bedroom. The bedroom is the one room that tends to harbor the most allergens. I recommend the following tips involving pets to minimize pollen expsoure: • Bathe pets more frequently, especially if they tend to spend a lot of time outdoors. • Use a damp towel or wet wipes to collect pollen from your pet after he or she is outside. Many stores and shops sell various pet and paw cleaning wipes, including those that are all-natural and alcohol-free. • For those highly allergic to tree pollen, consider banishing pets from the bedroom all-together. • Since pets love to hang out on furniture, carpets, and rugs, items that can also harbor pollen, it is important to use a vacuum with a HEPA filter on carpets and upholstered furniture regularly. One thing interesting to note about the 2016 allergy season is that San Antonio saw a cross-over of two of the most prominent pollens – mountain cedar and oak. Mountain cedar season, which typically shows up in mid-November and lasts through mid-February, 8

presented itself about two weeks behind schedule last fall. As a result, mountain cedar ran a longer season than usual, overlapping with oak. Both pollens registered simultaneously on the pollen count for several weeks. Typically, those who suffer from both cedar and oak get a two week respite between the two. This year, they did not. With allergens, there is a threshhold level. To illustrate, imagine the allergen threshhold as an empty cup. If a patient is allergic to dust mites, that may fill his cup by a quarter. Add exposure to oak and the cup may increase to the three-fourths fill line. If there is mountain cedar present as well, and that’s another of his allergens, the cup is likely to overflow. There is a culmative effect of allergens on our bodies which can result in increased symptoms. In the end, the key to treating one’s allergies, is to first know exactly what allergens trigger symptoms. I recommend allergy testing with a board certified Allergist. Once allergens are confirmed, an Allergist can determine the most effective plan of treatment. The right medicine, coupled with proactive steps to minimize pollen exposure, will allow a person with allergies to feel good and live productively, even among peak allergy seasons. Long walks outdoors with a pet can be enjoyed year round in San Antonio. Just make sure to take the right precautions and treatment. S

pring may bring butterflies but not always in the ways that you think. Spring air does indeed bring beautiful flowers, butterflies, and new life, but it also brings wicked temperature changes, pollen, and chocolate; all of which can be potentially damaging to your pet’s delicate constitution. This month, we are going to discuss what happens when spring strikes and what you can do to help.

BY DR. COURTNEY H. BRIDGEMAN, CHIEF VETERINARIAN, SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY

How does temperature change affect my pet? Well aside from the obvious discomfort of wearing a winter coat when its 80 degrees outside or conversely having put away your winter coat and found it’s dropped back down below freezing, several other factors of temperature change can affect your pet. Have you ever noticed that your pet’s stomach can seem upset during or right after winter storms? Diarrhea or vomiting can be quite common in adult animals when the weather plays crazy games with their comfort level. How do you know if it’s something worth worrying about and how can you help? Well, if your pet is under 6 months of age, any vomiting or diarrhea that lasts more than 12 hours should be considered a case for a veterinarian. Not only are younger animals more susceptible to dehydration (just like kids), but they can also go downhill very quickly. This is because their calorie needs are far higher than an adult animal of a similar size. Deadly viruses are also known to strike the young and can first present themselves as vomiting and diarrhea. Always better to be safe and seek a professional. If, however, your pet is over 6 months of age and (aside from the vomit or diarrhea) appears otherwise normal and in good spirits, it may be acceptable to give it a day or two to pass. This doesn’t mean, of course, to sit and do nothing. We all know that digestional upset can definitely be anything but pleasant

and at the very least can lead to some embarrassing accidents—even for our pets! It’s important not to blame them or punish them for accidents during this time. After all, haven’t we all had those moments when getting to the restroom was a challenge? What might have happened if a bathroom was not an option? Exactly! So be patient and sympathetic to your poor family pet. If you’re concerned, always consult a vet! If your pup or kitty refuses food, acts lethargic, can’t seem to get comfortable, or in any other way makes your instincts scream that something is wrong, seek assistance. It’s never a bad idea to call the doctor. What if Fido is running around chasing the stick, has eaten all his breakfast, but his stool is still just watery and gross? Something to try is NPO, or in laymen terms “nothing by mouth.” That’s right: hit the reset button on the belly. Remove the things that can further unbalance the system. No food. No treats. No water. For 24 hours. In a healthy adult animal, indoors, and with no environmental threats (e.g. sun, heat, or cold) this won’t cause any damage and can actually help your pet’s stomach have a chance to calm down and heal. When 24 hours have passed (make sure to avoid their baleful stare till then—be strong!), start them back with some boiled chicken strips and salt-less white rice. Maybe even add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin to the mix. Kitties won’t like the rice, but

heartwormdisease in dogs and cats A

heartworm is a deadly parasite that lives in the heart and lungs of infected pets. It can measure up to 12 inches long, survive for seven years, and produce hundreds of offspring during its lifetime. Heartworms damage the lungs and heart, eventually causing heart failure. Fortunately, there are many safe and effective preventives available to save our pets from this serious disease. How infection occurs Heartworms are transmitted from pet to pet by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes carry baby heartworms, called “microfilaria”, and infect dogs, cats, ferrets, or certain wild animals when they bite. The microfilaria then enter a pet’s bloodstream through the mosquito bite and make their way to the heart and lungs, where they will mature over six to seven months. Once they have matured, they will begin to reproduce. The offspring can then infect other mosquitoes that feed from your pet and spread the disease to neighboring dogs and cats. Diagnosis Your veterinarian can collect a small blood sample to perform a simple test for heartworms. Because the test checks specifically for adult worms, it takes six to seven months for your pet to test positive after he or she has been infected. It is much easier to treat heartworm disease when it is caught early, so it is recommended that your pet be checked every year, even if he or she is given a monthly heartworm pill.

BY DR. JENNI RIZZO

Signs Early on, your pet may show no sign of infection. However, as the infection progresses, your pet will start to cough, have less energy to exercise, and may lose weight and develop a swollen belly. Cats may appear to have asthma attacks or suddenly collapse. Prevention Preventing heartworms is simple! There are numerous safe and effective products available by prescription through your veterinarian to save your pet from contracting this terrible disease. Most preventives come in the form of a monthly pill, which kills any immature heartworms that 16

may have infected your pet during the past four weeks. It is important to remember to give the pill every 30 days in order to prevent baby worms from growing to the next stage. Once they have begun to mature, heartworm prevention is no longer effective against those worms, and your pet can develop heartworm disease. Treatment There is no approved treatment for heartworms in cats, so prevention is extremely important. Treatment is available for dogs. The process involves a course of antibiotics, steroids, and a series of injections to kill the worms themselves. It is safer and more successful if performed early. Some dogs with severe disease may not be able to be cured, but can be made more comfortable with medication. Your veterinarian can tell you whether or not treatment is safe for your dog. Please visit the American Heartworm Society’s website, www.heartwormsociety.org, for detailed information about heartworms and speak to your veterinarian about heartworm prevention today! Dr. Jenni Rizzo received her DVM from Kansas State University in 2012. She has practiced emergency and exotic pet medicine for the past 4 years in Corpus Christi and San Antonio. She joined Mission Pet Emergency in 2015 and has been nominated to serve on the Executive Board of the American Heartworm Society this year.

Although each case is different, we have several different medications available to help manage seizures safely. Because there are several options available for treatment, most veterinary neurologists recommend treating early in the course of the seizure disorder rather than waiting until the seizures are happening frequently. ourseniorpets assessing quality of life in

O

ver the years I have noticed that as our pets age they begin to experience many of the same ailments and conditions we experience such as arthritis, hearing and vision loss, incontinence and even dementia. Many of these issues can be managed with medications and by modifying your home to accommodate their physical limitations, however eventually their aging bodies will reach a point where all the medical technology can no longer help and you may have to make the heartbreaking decision to help them cross over to the Rainbow Bridge.

BY VALERIE LACAYO, R.N.

As our pet ages there are certain symptoms to look for that will signal their bodies begin to shut down. You will see their appetite begin to decrease they will loose weigh, get tired quicker and sleep more. Pain from various conditions like arthritis may become a concern as well. Signs that they are in pain include getting up slowly, their back legs give out on them, groaning when getting up, reluctance to go up stairs or jump up on the furniture or they will stop playing. When the pain becomes sever you may see things like panting, restlessness exhibited by getting up and down repeatedly, acting like they don’t want to lay down or not getting up at all and they may even stop eating. Senior pets may also lose their eyesight and hearing. You will then notice them bumping into things or not waking up or coming when you call. You may also notice that they wander aimlessly or get lost or stuck in corners. These are classic signs of dementia in animals. When their time is getting very near they will often start to withdraw, meaning they will no longer engage in activities they once enjoyed, they do not seek your attention, they hide in strange places or they no longer greet you when you come home. The question then is how do you know when it is time to make “the decision”? As a human and pet hospice care provider I have learned that quality of life is the most important consideration. Everyone, animals included, have their own definition of quality of life, but there are some basic needs that are important to all living creatures one is to be free from pain, another is to be able to participate in 24

activities that we find enjoyable. You can make a “living will” for your pet. List 5 things your pet enjoys doing, when they reach the point that they cannot do at least 3 of the 5 activities then you know your pet is losing their quality of life. If medications are no longer controlling symptoms such as pain or seizures then your pet is no longer having quality of life. This is when you should begin to consider alleviating their suffering through euthanasia. While it is a difficult decision to make no one wants to see their beloved pet suffer and relieving their pain and suffering through euthanasia is truly the final act of love. Valerie Lacayo, R.N., has a bachelors degree in Science and Nursing with 14 years experience as a hospice nurse and is the owner of Pawsitive Memories Pet Hospice and Memorial Services. The death of her own canine companion,Marty, convinced Valerie of the need for hospice care for animals as well as grief support for their human family members. Pawsitive Memories is a realization of nearly two decades of health care experience, specific understanding of comfort care and a desire to help others through the grieving process of a pet with dignity, empathy and understanding.

fiestapetfashionista O

ver the last 10 years, Fiesta has been increasingly going to the dogs! During Fiesta, you can now find several different events to attend with your pet from the grand, royal scale of the El Rey Fido Coronation, to the intimate, but quirky Southside’s Fiesta 4 Paws Pet Pageant. There are so many things to do, that even the die-hard Fiesta pet fashionista will need a siesta or two!

BY DR. OLGA JAIMEZ

When did all the doggie fashion trend start?? In 2001, Bruiser, a Chihuahua dressed in a designer outfit was seen on the big screen, carried in the arms of the fictional character Elle Woods. In the blockbuster movie “Legally Blonde”, Bruiser became the initiator for the pet fashion trend. But the most notable doggie fashionista of current times— has to be Tinkerbell. In 2002, Paris Hilton’s trendy little Chihuahua was always seen wearing the latest in doggie couture. Tinkerbell, made every designers A-list, and every pet owner wanted to have a matching a purse w/ small dog, wearing a matching attire…I know, I did. Even though, Tinkerbell was possibly the first to start the doggie wear explosion, our fabulous Fiesta wearing pets can out sparkle any designer doggie model! So what should your pet wear to their upcoming Fiesta Pawty? The rule is anything goes during Fiesta. The bigger the better and the more confetti and glitter, the brighter. In order to have those pupparrazi cameras flickering, your pet’s outfit should have a theme or represent a Royal Court of an outrageous make believe doggie treat, toy, drink or whatever you think of. The ideas are endless and the theme of your pet’s Fiesta wear is unlimited! Here are a few ideas—The Royal Court of Fiesta Chili Dogs, El Chihuahua de Cascarone, Viva El Gato en los Zapatos, and Las Pug-a-ritas. Don’t forget the accessories! Flowers, Fiesta medals, and sombreros are a must for every Fiesta outfit. A colorfully decorated cart or wagon is the perfect accessory for the smaller or older dog that cannot walk the long distances required for some of the Fiesta events. Your pet will love being pulled around like royalty in their own personally decorated Fiesta float! For your fur-challenged pet, you can use colorful

wigs or hair barrette extensions, to create that rocking Doogie-do. To design hairstyles that would make any beauty queen jealous, use a ponytail or a bun hair extension with glue applied to a ribbon or soft elastic to tie around your pet’s head. Attach a small crown, and now your pet is the Royal King or Queen of their court! Viva Fiesta! Viva Perritos! Viva Gatitos! And Viva to the wonderful organizations who put on these unique events for our pets to attend! To find more information on Fiesta pet events that are available for your pet, check out the events page on page 9 of this magazine. They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA

W

hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. {April 2016}

I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.

Like so many, Dan is in dire need of a kidney donor. Without one, there is no hope. Dan has spent his entire life taking care of his family and friends. His warmth and generosity touches the lives of everyone he meets. There is nothing he would not give to help better the lives of the people around him, but now it is Dan who needs our help. It is a terrible thing to sit and watch your family try to go about their lives knowing that soon they could be without your love, your guidance, your wisdom. To have your children, fur children and grandchildren cry in your arms,

not wanting to let you go, is a burden that over 100,000 families who are in desperate need of an organ transplant face every single day. The waiting list for a deceased organ donor is so long (approximately 8 years) that most families are left to fend for themselves in their search for finding a living donor; for finding a hero. While it is no small thing, the donation of a kidney is much scarier in thought than reality. There are thousands of successful living donor kidney transplants performed every single year. Giving the gift of life is the greatest gift any person can give or receive. Q: My husband wants us to adopt a parrot. Can you tell me what medical issues to expect and if they need similar vaccinations to a dog or cat?

A: You didn’t state what type of parrot you were thinking about adopting, birds tend to live longer than dogs and cats and they do not need annual vaccines. As far as diet, you can give seeds, fruits and vegetables but the majority of the diet should be a high quality pelleted food. Birds are also very sensitive to temperature changes, you don’t want your bird to be near an A/C vent or wherever there is a cold draft. The parrot should be in a cage large enough for a perch and for the parrot to move around. Find a veterinarian that treats birds and enjoys working with them. They will be able to give you additional information about specific bird species..

is healthy enough for swimming, if your pet has a heart issue or is overweight, limit swim time. If your dog has been diagnosed with exercise intolerance collapse, it is best if they do not swim at all. Always check the swimming area for any runoff or stagnant water. Know the depth of the swimming area and never allow your dogs to swim after eating. There are life jackets made for dogs and they work well for those breeds who are not natural swimmers, like bulldogs. After swimming, always wash your dog off, this helps prevent itching or hot spots from developing. Also, place a small amount of isopropyl alcohol in your dog’s ears after swimming. This will help dry out the canals and help prevent an ear infection from forming.

Q: We are moving near a lake. My dog likes to swim. Is there any precautions I need to take before I allow him in the water?

chewing A

tips to stop your dog from

question I am often asked by my clients is "How do I stop my dog from chewing?" It is a problem lots of dogs have, but keep in mind that Chewing is a normal behavior. For a lot of dogs chewing is like therapy or a pacifier. It's also a tool for them to stay healthy by cleaning their teeth and gums. Best of all, chewing on 'appropriate' objects will keep your dog occupied and happy. WHERE TO START? Dogs can't distinguish between old and new. So, don't confuse them. Never give your dog personal items like old shoes unless you are willing to have new shoes destroyed. Make sure your children's toys are kept separate from your dog's and are not too similar. Don't leave your children's toys lying around. Having lots of dog toys and a large variety is important. Hard chew bones, softer toys and interactive toys like "kongs" that are stuffed with treats work well. Unfortunately, providing the right things to chew may not be enough to deter our dogs from chewing on other things. We usually divide chewing into 3 different groups.

BY MARLENE RING

1. CHEWING ON LARGE OBJECTS THAT CAN'T BE MOVED SUCH AS FURNITURE OR WALLS Do not allow the dog near the object or room without supervision. Puppy gates may be needed to block off certain areas of your home. Accompany your pup and keep them busy with lots of attention. I like to keep them on a leash, at first. If they give any indication of chewing, I can immediately redirect their attention. Dogs learn that they can be in the same room and behave appropriately. Once you are able to trust your dog won’t chew on these things he can earn a little more freedom such as laying in the living room while you are within sight in another room. However, until you are completely confident that the behavior has stopped, you will need to continue with supervision or confine your dog to his crate. 2. CHEWING ON THINGS THAT CAN BE MOVED Dogs like chewing on things that are laying around. In this case, the very WORST thing you can do is to chase after them since this will turn into a super fun game for them. Instead, try some of these other techniques. 30

Ignore the dog completely A lot of dogs tend to grab inappropriate objects as a way of getting attention. If ignored, they tend to lose interest and drop their prize. Redirect the behavior Try grabbing one of your dog’s toys and playing with it yourself. Start throwing it in the air and pretend it is a very special, fun game. When your dog comes over, continue to play and ignore the dog until you see him release whatever is in his mouth. Then allow him to play with the toy while you get rid of the inappropriate object. Trade for something better This method should only be used when the object in the dog’s mouth is either very special to you or harmful to the dog. Let's say your $500 designer shoes or a box of rat poison. A juicy piece of ham trumps your Prada shoes every time. 3. CHEWING ON HUMANS (go to my web site to read this blog at: www.pawsitivesolutionssite.com) Remember, Chewing is normal for your dog. Whether he is anxious or just bored, you can guide him to the behavior you desire. Try these tips, but all dogs are different. If these techniques are not working for you then please give me a call to get a personalized analysis of your situation.
