LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Springtime in San Antonio means two significant events, Fiesta and Easter. Our furry friends join with us in these celebrations. For the first time “El Rey Fido”, is an official Fiesta event. The King is to be crowned on April 5th. Details about El Rey Fido can be found in our article by Felicia Niño titled “The San Antonio Humane Society Kicks off Fiesta in Style”. Those who love bunnies and chicks, have their day on April 20th. Care and maintenance of bunnies are also covered by Randy Housley of Polly’s Pet Shop. For those looking to fill their Easter baskets for their fur kids, we have good ideas in our Easter Gift Giving section which highlights local pet retailers. If you are looking for places to take your furry friend during this joyous holiday season, please check our calendar of events in this issue. Look for our first anniversary celebration magazine arriving on the newsstands in early May. Sincerely,
Dana Raimondi

dogs for ptsd T
BY DR. COURTNEY H. BRIDGEMAN, CHIEF VETERINARIAN, SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY
his month we have the privilege of discussing a collaborative research study that the South Texas Veterans Health Care System and the San Antonio Humane Society are conducting to explore whether adopting a dog from the SAHS might benefit Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This project is funded by the Rehabilitation Research and Development Office of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The adopted animals are companion dogs rather than service dogs. How does it work? Interested Veterans with PTSD contact the VA study team. To be eligible, they need to have had a dog previously, but not to have had a pet in the last 12 months. There are also other requirements, which the study team is glad to discuss with potential participants. If Veterans meet all the qualifications for this 6-month study, they are randomly assigned (like the flipping of a coin) either to adopt a dog from the SAHS right away or to receive their pet after 3 months. When it is time to select their dog, Veterans have the opportunity to meet with the SAHS staff and myself to discuss their hopes and desires in finding a dog. There are many different dogs and many different personalities. Everyone has an expectation of what they are hoping to achieve and the type of companion they are hoping to take home. They then come
to the SAHS with a member of the VA study team on selection day, where they meet with an adoption counselor to discuss the profiles of 5 dogs that I have chosen as potentially a good match for them. Then it’s off to the kennels! A Veteran may meet with all 5 dogs OR perhaps fall in love with the first one. At that point, it is all about the connection. If after meeting with all 5 dogs, the Veteran still does not find the one he or she clicks with, a second group of dogs will be selected and tested. The SAHS has a large volume of intakes and adoptions. New dogs come through the facility every week and it is only a matter of time before the right one is found. The adoption fee for the selected dog is waived. The week after adoption Veterans return to the SAHS with their pet for the first of 8 weekly obedience training classes, which are designed to help the

pair form a close-knit team. The classes are provided free of charge. The VA team and SAHS staff continue to support the Veteran and their new partner as they get to know each other. Veterans are followed closely by the VA study team throughout the study to evaluate how they are affected by the presence of a dog in their life, while also continuing with regular care for their PTSD. Veterans are responsible for the costs of caring for their pet, except for veterinary care, which is provided free of charge during the study. They will receive compensation for their time.
the pros and cons of the breeds or breed-mixes they are thinking of adopting. Next, I will go through the kennels with a fine-toothed comb, looking for 5 individual dogs that meet the study criteria of weighing at least 30 pounds and being at least one year old. The dogs can be male or female and of any temperament as long as they show NO signs of aggression. I then give each dog a full temperament test to assess their personality and trainability as well as ball-drive. We also look for any hidden idiosyncrasies that could prove to be an issue later. During the obedience sessions, which I conduct, we work on the communication and behaviors that establish a good bond between the Veteran and the dog, as well as discussing any questions that Veterans may have. Are you interested or do you know someone who might be interested in participating in this study? Contact Dr. Ana Allegretti at (210) 617-5300 ext. 16079 or visit SAhumane.org/PTSD.
What is my role in the study? As Chief Veterinarian at the San Antonio Humane Society, I take a very active part in this study. I developed questions for the Veterans to answer with the goal of determining what they are looking for in a pet. Do they want an activity companion or a couch buddy? Do they need a dog who will be attentive and calm or one who is playful and exuberant? I like to follow up on these questions with a 15-minute meet and greet before selection day. This allows me to hone in on any needs Veterans might have that were not included in their answer to the questions, as well as any expectations for behaviors, size, etc. that might not have been previously communicated. It happens frequently that the picture people have in their mind is not in line with the reality of the breed or the size. People may want a lab because they visualize the older, calmer, placid dog and not the 3-year-old bounce-offthe-wall, ball-obsessed dog that DR. COURTNEY H. BRIDGEMAN, CHIEF most labs are at that age. It’s very VETERINARIAN FOR SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY, AND FRIEND important for everyone to research {April 2014}

an Antonio Pets Alive!(SAPA!) and PAWsitively Sweet Bakery teamed up to launch the first monthly pet market in city history. PAWsitively Sweet Bakery created the SA Urban Pet Market to offer pet owners a unique shopping experience and raise funds to support the No Kill movement in San Antonio.
ARTICLE WRITTEN BY: LENA SCALERCIO & ESTHER FOSTER
The San Antonio Urban Pet Market occurs every second Saturday and is located at the Paul Jolly Adoption Center Petco Pavilion at 210 Tuleta Dr. across from the SA Zoo. All vendors offer pet friendly products and services including gourmet treats, grooming, doggy daycare, dog attire, and photographers along with food fare. Each vendor donates a portion of their proceeds to benefit San Antonio Pets Alive! Located in San Antonio, PAWsitively Sweet Bakery offers all-natural, nutrient-rich dog treats using herbal ingredients like flaxseed, peppermint, and chamomile that provide nutritional benefits for their canine consumers. Other flavors include beer treats made with Ranger Creek Brewery grains and Extra Cheesy Turkey made with Arugula Catering pesto sauce and Salud de Paloma extra virgin olive oil. Alexis Quiroga, founder of PAWsitively Sweet Bakery says, “The objective of the market is to partner with a non-profit in San Antonio that supports the No Kill city effort. We chose San Antonio Pets Alive! because they help save thousands of pets every year and have the same goal in mind. The event also allows us to support small, local businesses.” The market offers a different take on the traditional market days and provides an opportunity for pet owners to come together to support SAPA! and shop the exclusive vendor lineup. Each market day also includes adopt-
able dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from the SAPA! foster program with half price adoption fees. SAPA! is a non-profit animal rescue focused on saving companion animals in immediate danger of euthanasia at the city shelter. “Having saved over 13,000 lives in just two years, the funds raised from the monthly market will help us continue our mission of making San Antonio the largest No Kill city in the nation,” says Natalie Reyes, Fundraising Events Coordinator for SAPA! The Paul Jolly Adoption Center opened in October 2013 as the third adoption center for SAPA! The Petco Pavilion is used to host a variety of public and private events throughout the month in addition to the SA Urban Pet Market. The first market day launched on March 8th with over 15 vendors. “The Urban Pet Market is a great opportunity where local businesses can display a wide variety of wonderful products. The sense of community and helping pets in need makes this event very special,” says Nikki Scott of Collar Expressions, one of the market vendors. While the vendor list will vary each month, shoppers can plan to find exclusive petfriendly products and services as well as a good time for humans and animals alike. For more information or to sign up as a vendor, please visit www.sa-urbanpetmarket.com.

WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC Q: My Golden Retriever is 8 years old and my vet wants her to go on a special diet. However, she is very healthy and I don’t believe I need to spend the extra money on the special food. What are your thoughts? —Thank You, Roberta. A: There are special diets for special reasons, i.e. skin issues, kidney disease, weight management, etc. It would be important for me to know your pet’s present diet and history in order to give a more complete answer.

Q: We adopted our SAPA! foster who came from the mean streets of San Antonio. He is super sweet to humans, but is having a hard time adjusting to life around other animals. He now has 2 doggie siblings and they finally get along without fighting after 6 months. But, he will growl and chase other animals like he wants to attack them, even barks at our pet lizard! We need help with how to safely
socialize our newest family member to the rest of the world. —Thank you for all you do! A: Many foster animals and adoptees are not socialized well before going to a new home. Often they compete for attention the only way they know how, by fighting or growling. I usually recommend having control of all the pets with the family and slowly work things out, they typically do. Be careful with food and when fighting for your attention, this can be a dangerous situation. Consider a product called Orchex by Standard Process for calming dogs, especially male dogs. Please write or call with any additional questions, this is an important subject.

BY RANDALL HOUSLEY, GENERAL MANAGER OF POLLYS PET SHOP
down the rabbit hole...of
bunnycare “Mom, can I have a bunny?” If you’re a parent chances are your child has asked this question. Rabbits have been and continue to be one of the most popular and best first pets for families. Even so, there are several requirements that need to be met in order to provide a healthy and happy habitat for these hopping companions. One of the most important things to consider when purchasing a rabbit is the size of its habitat. While most pet bunnies are dwarf species, it is still possible for these “dwarf ” rabbits to grow to seven or eight pounds. As a result, any rabbit should have a habitat that gives it plenty of surface area to stretch out and hop
around. When selecting a cage, area is more important than height. Multiple level cages should be avoided unless they are tailored specifically to rabbits. Diet and treats are also very important. Up to 75% of a rabbits diet should be hay based. A quality hay based pellet food is great, but it should always be supplemented with fresh alfalfa or timothy hay. This satisfies the rabbits urge to graze as well as providing it the necessary hay. Wood chews are also essential for a healthy bunny. These chews are not consumed for food, but rather are used to help file down your rabbits ever growing front teeth! As always your local pet store can answer any questions you may have on rabbit care. They are truly fantastic first pets for kids and adults alike.

WITH TROY PFEIFER OF SIT MEANS SIT
Q: We just brought home a brand new puppy and we also have another dog who is seven years old. Our older dog seems very jealous and, therefore, is acting very aggressive and territorial to our new puppy. What training techniques do you recommend for us to use with our seven year old dog in order to check and put a stop to his unacceptable behavior towards our new dog? In addition, is there anything else that you would recommend we do? Thank You. —Louella. A: Unfortunately, this is a complicated question for the limited space we have here. First things first, you must keep your
dogs safe! They should not be left alone together and may need to be kenneled. When you are home, if there are two of you, then each dog should be leashed and each person is responsible for “their” dog. This way they can learn to be near each other without actually being able to get to each other. They don’t need to interact for now. Also, both dogs should be spayed or neutered if not already. Finally, I would work on a strong “place”/”bed” command and basic obedience with both dogs but especially your older dog. He needs to understand you are in charge - strong obedience, consistent structure, rules and boundaries are a great way to show him you are in charge in a productive way. Finally, I always say if things are not getting better, they are probably getting worse. So contact a trainer in your area that has experience working with aggression. They should offer a free consultation and show you how they plan to work with you and your dog to help you. Troy Pfeifer is the owner and head trainer of Sit Means Sit Austin and San Antonio. He has had a hand in training over 2000 dogs and loves the one on one personal interaction with clients to get their dogs well trained!

Q: Please give me advice on my dog who chews up everything. It is a one year old mini schnauzer. Thank You. —Valerie A: Don’t fret, this is a common problem usually caused by boredom for dogs over 1 year. Usually a robust daily obedience program, tricks, and consistent exercise will remove such behaviors. Also, giving the dog a mentally challenging task during the day while you are at work can help. A common suggestion is to freeze a Kong with some food and natural peanut butter or cottage cheese or buy a mind toy from your local pet store. If it is a significant problem, I would suggest teaching the dog to be comfortable in a crate and crating him during the day. If it happens while you are supervising him, you should replace what he is chewing with what you want him to chew.
fleaseason Spring is in the air! The breeze is blowing, the birds are chirping and the fleas are stirring… Know Your Enemy A flea is a small wingless insect. Their main diet is blood and they thrive in warm moist conditions. Reproduction is fast, a female flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day! Flea eggs are generally laid on your pet, but fall off onto your furniture, carpets and yards. Depending on the environment eggs can wait here for weeks to hatch. Once hatched, adult fleas will seek out the nearest warm blooded animal for their first meal. Fleas can jump great distances and will launch themselves onto anyone that passes by. Know the Risks Fleas can be uncomfortable and cause skin irritations, but they don’t stop there. A severe infestation can cause anemia. This can be especially harmful to small puppies and kittens. Fleas can also carry tapeworms which are not only harmful to your pet but can also be contracted by you and your family members! In addition because fleas can travel from rodent to rodent and pet to pet they are capable of carrying and spreading numerous diseases. Yuck!
BY MICHELLE POPILEK
The Best Offense is a Good Defense A flea infestation is easier to prevent than it is to treat. One of the most important things you can do is provide your pet with a monthly preventative. These come in oral and topical form. There are many different options that you can discuss with your veterinarian. Some monthly preventative medications also protect your pet from heartworms, hookworms and roundworms! Many of these parasites are a risk to people as well. It is important to keep all of your pets on a strict prevention schedule. Even if you cat 20
stays indoors, fleas can hitch on ride into your home on your dog or even yourself ! Have a Plan B If you find that regardless of regular monthly prevention your pet is still scratching, it may be time to treat the yard. There are local companies that offer this service and there are even organic options! In addition, avoid over watering your grass and plants. Fleas love moisture! Keeping your grass short and your plants well-trimmed will give the uninvited guests less places to hide. If you are noticing that you or your family members are getting bites at home, it may be time to treat the house. Fleas and their eggs can be hiding anywhere. Vacuum all carpets and furniture; wash all linens and do a thorough sweep and mop of the entire home. You may consider purchasing products to assist you in their removal, ranging from powders to sprays and foggers to bombs. Don’t Give Up Fleas can seem relentless. It can sometimes take multiple cycles of these treatments to rid them from your home and yard. The most important thing you can do is keep up on monthly preventatives for all of your pets. It saves money in the long run to keep these pests at bay instead of treating a full blown infestation. discolored or broken
teeth
D
ogs and cats are very curious. They explore their surroundings by putting objects in their mouth and chewing on them. Often times the object may be stronger than the tooth and if the pet bites down aggressively to explore the object, the tooth will be broken. Other causes of broken or discolored teeth may be trauma by an automobile, playing rough with other dogs or hard balls, etc.
We know that trauma to our teeth causes intense pain. The nerve fibers in the dog’s mouth and teeth are the same anatomically as in a person’s mouth. The dog being a pack animal is less likely to show pain since they don’t want to be perceived as weak. However, you may see subtle signs of hiding or less interest in food or a favorite chew toy, or food falling from the mouth when trying to chew. What needs to be done when you recognize a discolored tooth or a fractured tooth? Contact a veterinary dentist. An oral exam can be conducted to see if the fracture is simply a superficial chip of the enamel or if the break is deeper and the pulp canal is exposed. Sometimes the tooth will not break but blood can be seen inside the tooth discoloring it to a pink hue which later changes to purple then gray. Studies have shown that 94% of the time discolored teeth are undergoing irreversible pulpitis, a very painful condition. The options for treatment of a broken (with pulp exposed) or discolored tooth is root canal therapy to save the tooth or if the fracture is so involved that little of the original tooth structure remains, surgical removal must be done. If the fracture is superficial and the pulp canal is not visible, the exposed dentin should be sealed with a filling material to prevent pulp contamination as soon as possible. Once the pulp is 22
in the pet... what should be done?
contaminated, changes in the bone at the tip of the root can be visualized on a dental x-ray and root canal therapy or surgical extraction must be considered. Boarding Facility Choosing the
that is right for you and your pet
Y
our vacation is almost here! The hotel is booked and bags are packed. What about the dog? There are options out there to ensure your pet has a great vacation too! Read on to find out what you should look for in a boarding facility for your pet.
BY KIMBERLY SMITH
Determine whether you would like a traditional facility where your dog has his own run, or if you would prefer a social environment where your dog can play with others during the day. The traditional facility is a great option for unneutered/unspayed dogs or dogs that are sweet with people but not with other pets. These facilities can consist of indoor/outdoor runs or indoor only runs. Exercise time may not be included in the nightly rate, so be sure to ask when you call for more information. Traditional facilities may offer upgrades such as large suites with televisions, comfy beds, and personal webcams so you can watch your pup eat his dinner or catch that dream squirrel that he’s been chasing. Individual exercise or walk sessions are also widely available. Your vet may also offer boarding in a more traditional setting. So if your pup requires medical supervision or just happens to love your vet’s office, this is an option as well. The other alternative is a “daycare” environment where dogs interact in social playgroups during the day and then have their own kennel for feeding and sleeping. This option is for those dogs that get along well with others and are neutered/spayed after a certain age (typically 8
24
months). Dogs of any age can benefit from this type of socialization, but keep in mind there is usually a minimum age requirement of 4 months (or when your puppy has received all adult vaccinations). These “doggie daycares” typically have smaller runs than traditional kennels and may be indoor only due to the fact that the dogs are out of the runs for the majority of the day. Some daycares have play areas that are large outdoor spaces, indoor only play areas, or a mixture of both. Daycares also offer webcams, suites, and (usually) playtime inclusive rates. After you’ve determined which type of environment would work best for your pup, the fun begins! Call around and see what each facility has to offer and schedule a tour to see the place. Keep in mind that mornings are typically busy with cleaning and feeding so schedule your window shopping for the afternoon. Keep reading to see what you should look for… Cleanliness. The facility should look and, more importantly, smell clean. Even if the building is older, it should still smell fresh. It should be free of waste, odors, fleas and ticks. Ask how the facility is cleaned and disinfected.
&
d gs cats Texas
Wellness. Ask the employees what procedures are in place to ensure the health and well being of your pet. Checklists should be completed daily and any concerns noted. Find out what steps the facility would take if any issues were to arise. Water. Make sure that clean water is available at all times for the pets. Each and every dog in a run should have a full water container, and every play area should have plentiful water available. Food. Ask each facility about their feeding procedure. Some require you use their preferred food, others ask that you bring your dog’s own food so as not to upset their stomach during their stay. Don’t forget to ask if there are additional fees for special feeding requirements. Exercise. An active dog is a less anxious dog, and a tired dog is a happy dog. Be sure your pet will have enough activity to keep him from manifesting stress behavior such as constant licking, weight loss and other destructive activities. Medication. Discuss your pet’s medication requirements with the boarding facility to ensure that staff is able to provide the required medication on the prescribed schedule. Ask if there is an additional charge for medicating.
{April 2014}
Vaccinations/Parasite Control. All dogs allowed into the facility should have proof of (at minimum) rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and bordetella. Some places require parainfluenza, leptospirosis and hepatitis. Most facilities also require your dog to be on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Be sure to find out the exact requirements of your chosen facility because your dog may be denied entrance at the last minute! Evaluation Process. This is a step primarily reserved for social “daycare” facilities and is basically an interview for your dog. In this interview it will be determined if your dog is comfortable in a social setting, needs some time to get over a bit of social anxiety, or is not suitable for a daycare environment due to aggressive tendencies. The evaluation process can range from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the facility. Also, some charge for the process while others do not. Staff. Talk with the staff. Do they love their job and take pride in their work? Do they treat the dogs as if they were their own? These are your pet’s surrogate parents while you are away: Are they suitable? Dogs. Look around at the dogs being housed. They will be barking because you’re someone new, but do they otherwise look happy? Stressed? Hungry? Content? Clients: Talk to the facility’s existing clients for unbiased opinions on why they prefer their boarding facility over the others. The Extras. Are there webcams so you can keep an eye on your pup while you’re away? Are photos or videos emailed or posted online? Are calls to check on your pup welcomed? What interactive toys are available? Are there water features for your dog to splash around in? How much playtime do the dogs get each day? Choosing a boarding facility for your beloved pet can seem like a daunting task but don’t become homebound because of it! Peace of mind is the goal, so do your research, ask the right questions, and choose the place that makes you the most comfortable. Kimberly Smith started Pawderosa Ranch Doggie Play and Stay near the San Antonio Airport with her husband Mike Mitchell in 2006. Their second location opened in Schertz in 2008. When not taking care of your pup, Kim is entertaining her own 3 dogs, 2 horses, 1 donkey, 6 Belted Galloway cattle, and numerous chickens. doggieplaycare a trainer’s tips on
W
hen I first began training 20 years ago, doggie playcare wasn’t a popular service in this part of the country. Now, we understand the significance of properly socializing our dogs.
As owners, we have complete control over what we expose our pets to. How can we expect them to know how to interact in situations they are unfamiliar with? Dogs are very capable of adapting their behaviors when given the right guidance in the right environment – which is just what doggie playcare offers. It’s not uncommon to hear, “My dog doesn’t know how to play with other dogs.” Social behaviors are learned behaviors. When puppies play together they let each other know when a playful bite turns into: “Hey, that doesn’t feel good!” In that social situation, something useful has been learned – Bite inhibition. Supervised group play is also useful in teaching things like impulse control and how to regulate emotions (much like children acquire these skills in daycare or play groups). For wary dogs, a controlled environment is a great place for confidence building. It provides the opportunity to feel secure in their surroundings and encourages them to step out of their comfort zone. Playcare is practical too. It’s a great place for a dog to get exercise and burn off excess energy! We realize that every dog has a different personality. Some dogs are highly social and active. Others, would rather spend their day lounging with a human pal (which is perfectly acceptable). To create the most constructive playcare environment, dogs should be separated by both size and play style. Playcare personnel should be able to read body language and know 28
how to interrupt and redirect undesirable behaviors. To promote a safe setting, they should provide an appropriate dog to person ratio – this also encourages more one-on-one human interaction. The staff should work on basic obedience commands and reinforce good behaviors in a variety of circumstances. Personally, the most gratifying part of the doggie playcare experience is ending up with dogs that are calm and tired and owners who are happy to go home with their dogs. Irma Bice is the Training and Playcare Director for the Palms Pet Resort & Spa. She has over 20 years of experience working with dogs as: a breeder, an obedience competitor, conformation exhibitor and trainer. Throughout her eight years of teaching obedience and behavioral classes she has worked with all breeds and temperaments including aggression. Irma is a CPDT-KA, an AKC CGC evaluator, a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, a member of the American Treibball Association and a founding member of San Antonio Pet Trainers Alliance.

Leptospirosis
BY DR. OLGA JAIMEZ
A disease for the Urban dog
L
eptospirosis (lep-toh-sper-OH-sis) is caused by a bacterial organism called Leptospira. Leptospirosis was a disease that was rarely seen in the San Antonio area, but in the last several years there has been an increase in cases in and around the city. Leptospirosis is a contagious disease that may cause kidney and/or liver failure and may be potentially fatal. This disease is zoonotic which means it may affect your dog, as well as yourself.
34
&
d gs cats Texas
How do people and animals get Leptospirosis? Dogs may get this bacteria by coming in contact with infected urine contaminated water, soil or grass. Ingestion is the most common route of infection, but the bacteria can also enter the body through the skin, especially if there is a cut or scratch. Animals that can spread this disease include rats, squirrels, raccoons, deer, livestock, skunks, and opossums. These animals release the bacteria in their urine. Humans may become infected through contact of the dog’s infected urine or by exposure to urine contaminated water, for example, swimming in rivers/streams. Most cases of Leptospirosis occur during the spring and autumn months because the bacteria tends to thrive in moist soil conditions and moderate temperatures. Symptoms: Symptoms vary, but Common symptoms include: • Fever • Vomiting and/or diarrhea • Dehydration • Decreased appetite • Weakness and Depression • Stiffness, joint pain or muscle pain • Changes in urine color: (dark yellow color, to orange color, to very colorless urine) • Changes in urination amount The time between exposure and the signs of disease can range from 3-30 days. Can this disease be fatal to my dog? Yes, this disease is potentially fatal to both dogs and people. It can cause infections in the kidney, liver, brain, and other organs. These infections can progress to kidney and/ or liver failure if not diagnosed and treated early. How is the disease diagnosed? If exposure is suspected, your veterinarian will do a complete physical exam and perform diagnostic tests on the urine and blood from your dog. How is Leptospirosis treated? If diagnosed early, Leptospirosis is a treatable disease. Doxycycline is the antibiotic of choice. Some patients can be treated at home while others may require intense treatment in the hospital with intravenous fluids and medication. Vaccination and your dog: There are different types of Leptospirosis vaccines available. Some vaccines contain only 2 serovars or
{April 2014}
“strains” of Leptospirosis and some contain 4 serovars or “strains.” Using vaccines that contain 4 serovars is recommended because you will protect against more of the common serovars. Your dog will need 2 boosters of this vaccine at 3-4 weeks apart. After the initial vaccination, your pet will need to be vaccinated yearly. Some dogs may be sensitive to this vaccine and an allergic or adverse reaction may occur. Talk to your vet prior to administration of the vaccine about possible reactions. Is your dog at risk? (Your pet may be at risk if you answer yes to any of the questions below) • Do you see opossums, raccoons, skunks, or rats in your yards, neighborhoods, or parks? • Do you take your pet hunting, or take your pet swimming in lakes, ponds, or rivers? • Do you take your pet to dog parks or other walks where an infected dog or wildlife may have been? • Do you live in rural areas where wildlife are common? Leptospirosis used to be a “country” dog’s problem, but because urbanization is occurring at a fast rate in our city, increased wildlife are moving into our neighborhoods. Exposure to possible urine contaminated grass, puddles, or soil has become a greater risk than in the past. Talk to your veterinarian about vaccination and any other concerns you may have regarding Leptospirosis. Dr. Olga Jaimez graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. She has over 20 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery. Dr. Jaimez opened 4 Paws Animal Hospital in 2005. In addition, to her clinical practice, Dr. Jaimez is a full time instructor @ Palo Alto College, Veterinary Technology Program. She enjoys giving back to the community by sponsoring family fun events like the 4 Paws Howl-o-ween Costume Contest and the Fiesta 4 Paws Pet Pageant.

AFTER
Meet Ralphie. He was picked up a year ago by Animal Control Services who found him wandering in a field, dirty and hungry. SNIPSA heard that Ralphie had only 72 hours until he would be euthanized and went and rescued him. They neutered and vaccinated Ralphie and also treated him for heartworms. He was cared for at The Barking Lot until a foster became available. At last he was adopted by a wonderful family who thinks he is the PERFECT pet. He is much loved and a very LUCKY dog! This is Ralphie in his winter coat and one in his new summer do. The groomers, Trish and Aaron, at Designing Dogs helped to give him his new sporting look. He is now one cool dog. Trish and Aaron, (mother and son team) have been in the grooming business combined 55 years. They love their job, they feel it is the best! Designing Dogs-16302 San Pedro (210) 865-6750
