Q: As we are into the Spring season, is there a way, you can help avoid your dog from getting fleas? Is there any spray or anything you can put on them? —Thank You, Julie A: Flea control is very important in the springtime. Applying flea prevention to your pet is only one step in controlling a flea problem.

1st – Treat your yard with beneficial nematodes. Nematodes can be purchased at any good garden center. Springtime is also the best time to apply them to your yard. 2nd – Apply or give a topical/oral flea prevention to your dog or cat as recommended by your veterinarian.
3rd - Treating the inside of your home is important as well. Consider a reputable pest control service that uses insecticides that are pet safe. There are sprays that can be purchased at your veterinarian’s office. Ovitrol® and Frontline Spray® can be applied directly to your pet. Ultracide® is a spray you can use in the home that is also pet safe. I typically do not recommend over the counter flea collars, however Bayer® makes a collar called Seresto®. It is prescription only, and it is effective preventing fleas and ticks for 8 months. Seresto® has worked well on pets that live in rural areas where flea control is difficult.

WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC
the
fiestapetfashionista O
ver the last 10 years, Fiesta has been increasingly going to the dogs! During Fiesta, you can now find several different events to attend with your pet from the grand, royal scale of the El Rey Fido Coronation, to the intimate, but quirky Southside’s Fiesta 4 Paws Pet Pageant. There are so many things to do, that even the die-hard Fiesta pet fashionista will need a siesta or two!
BY DR. OLGA JAIMEZ
When did all the doggie fashion trend start?? In 2001, Bruiser, a Chihuahua dressed in a designer outfit was seen on the big screen, carried in the arms of the fictional character Elle Woods. In the blockbuster movie “Legally Blonde”, Bruiser became the initiator for the pet fashion trend. But the most notable doggie fashionista of current times— has to be Tinkerbell. In 2002, Paris Hilton’s trendy little Chihuahua was always seen wearing the latest in doggie couture. Tinkerbell, made every designers A-list, and every pet owner wanted to have a matching a purse w/ small dog, wearing a matching attire…I know, I did. Even though, Tinkerbell was possibly the first to start the doggie wear explosion, our fabulous Fiesta wearing pets can out sparkle any designer doggie model! So what should your pet wear to their upcoming Fiesta Pawty? The rule is anything goes during Fiesta. The bigger the better and the more confetti and glitter, the brighter. In order to have those pupparrazi cameras flickering, your pet’s outfit should have a theme or represent a Royal Court of an outrageous make believe doggie treat, toy, drink or whatever you think of. The ideas are endless and the theme of your pet’s Fiesta wear is unlimited! Here are a few ideas— The Royal Court of Fiesta Chili Dogs, El Chihuahua de Cascarone, Viva El Gato en los Zapatos, and Las Pug-a-ritas. Don’t forget the accessories! Flowers, Fiesta medals, and sombreros are a must for every Fiesta outfit. A colorfully decorated cart or wagon is the perfect accessory for the smaller or older dog that cannot walk the long distances required for some of the Fiesta events. Your pet will love being pulled around like royalty in their own personally decorated Fiesta float!
For your fur-challenged pet, you can use colorful wigs or hair barrette extensions, to create that rocking Doogie-do. To design hairstyles that would make any beauty queen jealous, use a ponytail or a bun hair extension with glue applied to a ribbon or soft elastic to tie around your pet’s head. Attach a small crown, and now your pet is the Royal King or Queen of their court! Viva Fiesta! Viva Perritos! Viva Gatitos! And Viva to the wonderful organizations who put on these unique events for our pets to attend! To find more information on Fiesta pet events that are available for your pet, check out the events page on page 34 of this magazine. Dr. Olga Jaimez graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. She has over 20 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery. Dr. Jaimez opened 4 Paws Animal Hospital in 2005. She enjoys giving back to the community by sponsoring family fun events like the 4 Paws Howl-o-ween Costume Contest and the Fiesta 4 Paws Pet Pageant.

what you need to know before
bringinghomeyourfirstpig
W
hen most people think of their ideal pet a certain breed of dog or cat instantly comes to mind. However, for those that love more exotic pets and are willing to put in a little more time and effort a pot-bellied pig can be an ideal choice.
REPRINTED WITH FROM TEXAS A&M
"Pot-bellied pigs, including mini and micro pigs, can make good indoor and outdoor pets," said Philippa Sprake, Clinical Assistant Professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM). "Pigs are social animals and each has their own personality." While pigs are unbelievably intelligent and undeniably adorable, as seen here, there are a few things petowners should know before bringing little Wilbur home to stay. The first thing future owners should do is check with their local homeowners association as well as their home's zoning regulations to ensure that pigs can be kept on the property. Pigs can be extremely noisy, especially when adapting to a new environment and the last thing any new pet owner wants is an angry neighbor or landlord trying to have the pet removed. "When it comes to deciding on a piglet, it is very important to choose one that is at least 8 weeks old, weaned, and comes from a reputable breeder to ensure that it is healthy," said Sprake. "Also, even though they are called miniature, micro pigs can still grow to around 40 pounds and full size or traditional pot belly pigs can reach 100 pounds or more so it is important to see the parents of the pig you are planning on taking home to evaluate your piglet's potential adult size." When it comes to training your new pot-bellied pig it is important to remember that pigs can be as intensive a pet as dogs, and as such they need exercise and social interaction or they may develop health and behavioral problems. Pigs can be trained very similarly to dogs using positive reinforcement techniques such as clicker training. They are also highly food motivated so it is important to make sure that their treats are low in
16
calories, such as fresh fruits or vegetables, in order to prevent obesity. "When it comes to feed, young pigs should be fed a youth mini-pig feed until they reach around two years of age," said Sprake. "After this they can be fed adult or senior foods which are high in fiber and relatively low calorie to help curb obesity. Pigs should also have access to fresh water at all times, and should never be fed human food as the high salt content can cause salt toxicity." When it comes to deciding where to place your pig's bedding, the first thing a pet-owner must decide is if they want to keep their new pet inside or out. Regardless, all pigs need access to the outside so they can root, which is an instinctive behavior where the pig digs in the ground with their snout searching for food and obtaining iron from the soil, which is vital to prevent anemia. "Pigs are sensitive to both hot and cold temperature extremes," said Sprake. "Therefore they need shelter from the sun, wind and rain. If kept outside in Texas, for example, they will need fans to compensate for the hot summer months as well as a kiddie pool or shallow pond to wallow in and cool off. Pigs can also be kept inside as they are easily housetrained or litter-box trained." Pet pigs, like their livestock counterparts, should be checked regularly by a veterinarian to ensure that they are healthy as possible. "Pet pigs initially need to be vaccinated to avoid several diseases, and should be spayed or neutered to prevent behavioral issues, unwanted litters, and other health problems," said Sprake. "Pigs should also be wormed several times a year and need their feet trimmed regularly. The biggest problems veterinarians see in pet pigs usually comes from owners providing an inappropriate diet."

he normal urinary tract in dogs consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys filter the blood and produce urine. n many days, Glenda Wall lives, moves, and thinks about pain. With a condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis, she suffers from neck, back, hip, and leg pain. So for over two years, Wall has been making regular visits to the pain management clinic of Dr. Stephen Dinger in Schertz, TX. Often, when she walks through his clinic doors, she says her pain is a screaming ten on a pain scale. It is sometimes so bad that Wall brings her daughter with her, with the hope that her daughter can help her focus on anything other than how she’s feeling at that moment.

e know spaying/neutering is important for maintaining a healthy pet population, but did you know that you expose your unaltered female cats and dogs to potential health risks if you choose to not spay them? In Cedar’s case, spaying her before her first heat cycle would have prevented her from becoming pregnant and suffering with a condition known as mastitis.
BY DR. LAUREN SEVERNS, DVM
The Merck Veterinary Manual defines mastitis as “inflammation of the mammary gland(s) associated with bacterial infection.” This can occur as a result of unsanitary conditions and/or allowing puppies with teeth and long nails to continue nursing. Puppies that are too old to still be nursing can easily traumatize the glands and introduce bacteria from their mouths and feces on their feet. The bacteria then grow rapidly with all the milk supplying nutrients for growth. Mastitis can only occur in animals that are lactating. An animal that is spayed cannot get mastitis. Cedar is a beautiful 1-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix and her story began when a Good Samaritan found her wandering the neighborhood alone and pregnant. They kindly took her in to let her have her puppies in a safe environment. Two weeks after the puppies were born, they noticed Cedar had stopped eating and nursing. They also discovered one of her mammary glands was abnormal, so they brought her to the San Antonio Humane Society for help. When I first met Cedar, she was depressed and one of her mammary glands was very swollen, firm, bright red, and hot to the touch. I
knew right away she had mastitis. This disease can affect one or multiple glands, but thankfully in Cedar’s case, only one gland was infected. She was immediately started on antibiotics and antiinflammatories, along with an age-old natural remedy of a cabbage leaf compress. Due to Cedar’s infection and necessary medications, her twoweek-old puppies now had to be bottle fed. Unfortunately, Cedar’s treatments were started too late. A few days into her stay, Cedar developed a fever and the infected gland had become necrotic and ruptured, draining a large amount of sour milk and leaving an open wound. As a result, the next step in her treatment was to place her under anesthesia and cut away all of the dead tissue. This would be difficult since all of her surrounding healthy mammary glands were full with milk from nursing her puppies. Mammary glands have many blood vessels to support milk production. This leaves the vessels vulnerable to cutting and damage during surgery leading to problems with blood loss when adjacent tissue needs to be cut away. There was a large amount of dead and dying tissue that needed to be removed, which left a very large open wound. Cedar had to battle through bleeding complications over the next couple days after her surgery.

She needed two more procedures under anesthesia to stop excessive bleeding, but she did well and was on her way to recovery. Cedar now needed to undergo multiple bandage changes each week to ensure her wound was kept clean and moist to promote healing. Some dogs will not tolerate so many bandage changes and need to be sedated. Not our Cedar! She thoroughly enjoyed every single bandage change because that meant she could lay back in someone’s lap and get all the attention she deserved. Her wound began healing beautifully! With each passing week, the once large wound became noticeably smaller until about three weeks after the surgery when a bandage was no longer needed. Cedar’s wound will continue to shrink and close until there is little trace left behind that there was ever a large, gaping wound. Cedar’s story is a prime example of why prevention is so important. Mastitis is only one possible complications of leaving your pet intact. Female cats and dogs should ideally

be spayed around six months of age before their first heat cycle, but talk with your veterinarian about when the best time will be for your pet. Besides the health benefits, it’s important to remember the cost of spay/neuter surgery is much less than the cost of emergency veterinary care. Not surprisingly, everyone involved with Cedar’s care fell in love with her—including her future mommy! She has since been adopted by one of our very own staff members. Dr. Lauren Severns has been an associate veterinarian for the San Antonio Humane Society since May 2016. She is a San Antonio native who attended Theodore Roosevelt High School (’05) and UTSA (B.S. Biology, ’09). Dr. Severns earned her D.V.M. degree from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine (’16). She loves the company of her cats, “Derby” and “Dotty” (pictured), her Chihuahua, “Dora,” and her Mustang, “Diego,” all rescues.

or me, Easter brings up fond memories of waking up and running outside to the front steps to see what the Easter Bunny had brought. My favorites were jelly beans, the big chocolate bunny and those delicious marshmallow peeps.
I would put on a colorful new dress for church and, then, it was off to Grandma’s. The whole family, dogs included, would race enthusiastically around the yard while the kids tried to scoop up as many eggs as they could during our annual Easter egg hunt. I’m not sure who had the most fun, the kids or the dogs. It was my Mom, though, who kept alert and watched to see that all of us stayed safe throughout the fun and games. She knew that, as with most holidays, changing the daily routine could pose dangers for her children including the four legged ones. As much fun as the Easter celebration is for the whole family, a little planning will ensure that your pets have a safe holiday. One peril that is easily overlooked are the beautiful Easter Lilies that decorate many homes at this time of year. They are extremely poisonous to pets and should be kept out of reach. Even the pollen can be very dangerous.
{April 2017}
Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and other candies, especially in large amounts, can make your dog very sick. These risks can be handled by simple management and supervision. Children might be responsible enough to secure their baskets, but if they forget, parents should put them up in a safe place. While enjoying the festivities, remember that dogs love to go overboard, especially when you’re not looking. Try and stay one step ahead of them and keep your eyes open for any unforeseen dangers of this colorful holiday. Have a wonderful Easter! Marlene Ring is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and Professional Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). Her Dog Training business “PAWSitive Solutions Dog & Puppy Training” has been offering positive training for 17 years. Marlene shares her life with two rescue dogs, Dakota and Bliss.

Unfortunately, the sparkling Easter basket and all that it contains can be a potential source of danger to your dog too. The basket, itself, as well as the Easter grass,
plastic eggs, candy wrappers and small toys can damage the intestines or cause choking if ingested.
