ver the last 10 years, Fiesta has been increasingly going to the dogs! During Fiesta, you can now find several different events to attend with your pet from the grand, royal scale of the El Rey Fido Coronation, to the intimate, but quirky Southside’s Fiesta 4 Paws Pet Pageant. There are so many things to do, that even the die-hard Fiesta pet fashionista will need a siesta or two!

BY DR. OLGA JAIMEZ

For your fur-challenged pet, you can use colorful wigs or hair barrette extensions, to create that rocking Doogie-do. To design hairstyles that would make any beauty queen jealous, use a ponytail or a bun hair extension with glue applied to a ribbon or soft elastic to tie around your pet’s head. Attach a small crown, and now your pet is the Royal King or Queen of their court! Viva Fiesta! Viva Perritos! Viva Gatitos! And Viva to the wonderful organizations who put on these unique events for our pets to attend! To find more information on Fiesta pet events that are available for your pet, check out the events page on page 34 of this magazine. Dr. Olga Jaimez graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. She has over 21 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery. Dr. Jaimez opened 4 Paws Animal Hospital in 2005. She enjoys giving back to the community by sponsoring family fun events like the 4 Paws Howl-o-ween Costume Contest and the Fiesta 4 Paws Pet Pageant.

iesta® has gone to the dogs! Therapy Animals of San Antonio’s Annual Fiesta® Pooch Parade celebrates its 20th year of family and fur friendly fun with a 2.6 mile pups and their people parade through the beautiful tree lined streets of Alamo Heights. The parade is scheduled to begin at 9:15 Saturday morning, April 28th at the Alamo Heights Pool House. Beset in Show parade sponsor Subaru will lead the parade with our pooch dignitary King Anbarkio along for the ride.

Come early so you have time to register and then enjoy the Fiesta® costume contest beginning at 8:15 (or dress up your pup and join in the fun), see the agility and retrieving dog demonstrations, and visit the many vendors offering various animal related goodies for those who have registered. On site Individual registrations are $30 and family registrations are $35, or pre-register and save. All registrations include the always unique conversation starting Fiesta® Pooch Parade t-shirt (one for an individual registration and two for a family registration). More information may be found at http://therapyanimalssa.org/about/fiesta-pooch-parade/parade-2018.html. Therapy Animals of San Antonio is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) that brings humans and animals together for healing. The Fiesta® Pooch Parade is its primary annual fund raising event which supports community services within Bexar County and the 9 surrounding counties. Registered human-animal teams visit hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, mental health facilities, military support centers, work with persons in hospice, support Children’s Bereavement, Ronald McDonald Homes, juveniles in detention, the women and children’s shelter, as well as many special events. Therapy Animal of San Antonio teams provide de-stress time for college students during finals week {April 2018}

and offer a multitude of community presentations and educational programs. Their teams also provide weekly 1:1 support for children in their StoryTails literacy program across the academic year in partnership with area grade schools. Therapy team work requires humans who understand how to navigate many types of facilities and work with their animals in support of the vulnerable persons they visit; so members attend classes and receive updates as evidence and services change. It also requires animals who demonstrate consistent basic obedience skills as well as the temperament to move reliably through various environments calmly and interact positively with individuals and crowds in diverse situations. Routine health screening, vaccinations and pre-visit grooming are also requirements. Teams are registered, or re-registered, every two years through a formal evaluation using national standards to ensure ongoing appropriateness for the work they are involved with. The Fiesta® Pooch Parade provides the financial support needed for team training, evaluation and work, as well as, community education programs and materials. Where else can you and your pup have this much fun and support the healing that animals provide your community at the same time? Viva Fiesta®, viva Fiesta® Pooch Parade!

BY KATHI FRANCE

When did all the doggie fashion trend start?? In 2001, Bruiser, a Chihuahua dressed in a designer outfit was seen on the big screen, carried in the arms of the fictional character Elle Woods. In the blockbuster movie “Legally Blonde”, Bruiser became the initiator for the pet fashion trend. But the most notable doggie fashionista of current times— has to be Tinkerbell. In 2002, Paris Hilton’s trendy little Chihuahua was always seen wearing the latest in doggie couture. Tinkerbell, made every designers A-list, and every pet owner wanted to have a matching a purse w/ small dog, wearing a matching attire…I know, I did. Even though, Tinkerbell was possibly the first to start the doggie wear explosion, our fabulous Fiesta wearing pets can out sparkle any designer doggie model! So what should your pet wear to their upcoming Fiesta Pawty? The rule is anything goes during Fiesta. The bigger the better and the more confetti and glitter, the brighter. In order to have those pupparrazi cameras flickering, your pet’s outfit should have a theme or represent a Royal Court of an outrageous make believe doggie treat, toy, drink or whatever you think of. The ideas are endless and the theme of your pet’s Fiesta wear is unlimited! Here are a few ideas— The Royal Court of Fiesta Chili Dogs, El Chihuahua de Cascarone, Viva El Gato en los Zapatos, and Las Pug-a-ritas. Don’t forget the accessories! Flowers, Fiesta medals, and sombreros are a must for every Fiesta outfit. A colorfully decorated cart or wagon is the perfect accessory for the smaller or older dog that cannot walk the long distances required for some of the Fiesta events. Your pet will love being pulled around like royalty in their own personally decorated Fiesta float!

FIESTA STYLE

hese five steps are all you need to achieve dog T-shirt success. T-shirts for dogs are all the rage, but how can you make your dog look unique? If your dog is willing to cooperate, you can follow these basic tips to make your dog their own T-shirt.

Step 1. Measuring.

With your dog standing still and upright, measure the length of your dog’s neck where the collar sits, the length from the collar to the base of the tail and the chest size at its thickest point just behind the front legs. If you want to make sleeves, you will also have to measure the length of your dog’s legs. The shirt shouldn’t be too tight, so add a few inches to these measurements for comfort.

Step 2. Pattern and sewing.

You can download or buy a sewing pattern instead of making your own. There aren’t many places that offer free patterns for dog T-shirts, but there are a couple: Dogs Clothes Patterns and The Charlotte Letters. A variety of patterns to make dog shirts are also available on Amazon, Ebay and Etsy. Try the pattern by pinning it around the dog’s body and make modifications as needed. Cut the fabric following your pattern’s shape, and then carefully sew the pieces together. Remember to add the hem for the bottom of the shirt and the sleeves.

Step 3. Designing.

Open your photo or sketch in a graphics editor like Photoshop (best for photos) or Illustrator (best for logos and stylized artwork). If you are working with a sketch, trace it with the help

of the Pen tool, adjusting stroke thickness and color. If it’s a photo, adjust saturation, brightness and contrast to make it pop. For more fun, match the design to your dog’s personality and the occasion. Save the file as a printer-friendly format, like JPEG or PDF.

Step 4. Home printing.

The quickest way to add a design to your dog T-shirt is to buy iron-on transfer paper. Transfer sheets are very easy to work with and are available in most office supply stores. After printing, apply firm pressure while ironing the fabric. Let it cool before peeling. Remember to wash the shirt gently in cold water.

Step 5. Online printing.

If you aren’t the crafty type and all you want is to have your doggie’s tee ready now, you can take advantage of sites like Zazzle and UberPrint. These online printing services have customizable pet apparel for the dog lovers out there. You just have to choose the item’s model, color and size and upload your artwork. They’ll take care of the rest.

Stylish doggie threads.

While not every dog likes to wear clothes, those that don’t mind will be looking stylish in original threads designed by you. Remember, make sure your dog will feel comfortable, take the time to choose the right materials and size it carefully.

five reasons to join the

elreyfidocelebration! T

hey came as common pooches, but they will leave as Fiesta canine royalty! The San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) is coming together again this Fiesta to celebrate the city’s most festive fundraising pooches during the annual El Rey Fido Coronation— and you and your dog are invited! The event is the culmination of months of vigorous fundraising by local dogs and their human companions. Each year’s top fundraising dog is crowned El Rey Fido with four runner-ups joining the Royal Court. This year’s participants raised over $50,000 for the pets at the San Antonio Humane Society and if that’s not reason enough to join us for the celebration, here’s five more:

Everypawdy is Invited!

This festive event is family and (of course) dog friendly! Where would El Rey Fido XVI and his Royal Court be without the support and contributions of their local pet community? Bring your pooch dressed to impress to the doggie-event of the season! The El Rey Fido Coronation will be happening this year at the historic and dog-friendly Sheraton Gunter Hotel (205 E. Houston Street, 78205).

What separates El Rey Fido XVI and the 2018 Royal Court apart from the other pooches in the crowd (besides their dedication to the SAHS mission and thousands of fundraising dollars)? Their Festively Royal Grr-robes! Watch these top fundraising dogs walk the stage in their perfectly tailored doggie robes adorned with jewels and sequins handmade by Mistress of the Grr-Robes, Cheryl Trevor.

“Our mission is to provide dog training programs that result in a super happy, confident, and obedient dog, as well as a happy, confident and satisfied owner.”

A: Flea control is very important in the springtime. Applying flea prevention to your pet is only one step in controlling a flea problem. 1st – Treat your yard with beneficial nematodes. Nematodes can be purchased at any good garden center. Springtime is also the best time to apply them to your yard. 2nd – Apply or give a topical/oral flea prevention to your dog or cat as recommended by your veterinarian.

3rd - Treating the inside of your home is important as well. Consider a reputable pest control service that uses insecticides that are pet safe. There are sprays that can be purchased at your veterinarian’s office. Ovitrol® and Frontline Spray® can be applied directly to your pet. Ultracide® is a spray you can use in the home that is also pet safe. I typically do not recommend over the counter flea collars, however Bayer® makes a collar called Seresto®. It is prescription only, and it is effective preventing fleas and ticks for 8 months. Seresto® has worked well on pets that live in rural areas where flea control is difficult.

If you live in Stone Oak, Encino or any of the adjacent communities, Pet Galaxy’s new coach bus pickup and delivery service may soon be coming to a bus stop near you, or for an additional fee, directly to your home. The new offering is a subscription service customized for each individual family and canine. The company will pick up your dogs every morning and drop off your happy and satisfied best friend every evening. During the day, the dogs will be provided plenty of play time for exercise with all their canine friends, access to playing various fun enrichment games such as “Use Your Nose to Find the Treat” and retriever games such as having a staff member throw a stick, tennis ball or frisbee. If desired, dogs may even participate in formal obedience training instructed by one of the company’s professional dog trainers. Even all-important nap-time is scheduled for each dog at strategic times during the day. Each bus can safely transport over 50 dogs (and cats), which means this is a limited offering on a first come, first serve basis, especially targeting families in the Stone Oak and Encino areas. Pet Galaxy is located about 20 minutes’ drive north of Stone Oak on Hwy 281, and has been offering daycare, lodging, grooming and training services for almost 10 years running. The facility occupies almost 6 acres in the city of Spring Branch, and is arguably best known for their huge outdoor doggie play yards, and as Lynn Haegeland, Director of Operations, adds “Please don’t forget our fantastic staff, and our service that we work so hard to ensure is second to none.” Most facilities located in and around the city of San Antonio offer either tiny indoor-only play areas, or in a few cases, a small outdoor play area. However, common for most of these, is that they are usually much too undersized for any real doggie play to materialize. If you have seen one of these facilities, you may have noticed how the dogs mostly stand around looking at each other, and the only break in the monotony is whenever a staff member decides to take a walk around the area. In the latter case, most of the dogs will simply follow the hu{April 2018} man to see if he or she has any fun ideas.

PET GALAXY'S NEW BUSES

Pet Galaxy, in contrast, is located in the beautiful Hill Country north of San Antonio. The facility covers almost 6 acres, and provides large outdoor play yards featuring natural ground cover and plenty of oak trees with squirrels and other fun wildlife. The largest of the yards even includes a palm-tree encircled in-ground doggie swimming pool with a 7-foot water fall and a giant oyster with a pearl that spits water. Your furry friends can run, play, swim and just be a dog to their hearts’ desire. A visit would quickly convince you that these are the happiest dogs in San Antonio and beyond, bar none. But don’t simply take our word for it, take a look at some of the videos and many photos on the company’s Facebook page (http://facebook.com/PetGalaxyUSA). “Many of these canines’ families initially told us that their dogs did not like other dogs, or did not like to play at all.”, Lynn points out. “The reason was that they had previously taken their furry friends to some other facility with much smaller, or virtually non-existent, play yards. They could not believe their own eyes when we showed them video of their best friends running, swimming and playing uninhibited.”, Lynn affirms with a proud smile. As all informed dog owners know, it is absolutely essential for canines large and small to get plenty of exercise. Dogs have a vast surplus of energy, referred to by experts as “predatory energy”. This is the energy store originally utilized by the animal in pre-historic times, when dogs had to hunt for their own food just like other predators. The energy is still there, creating a very strong craving in the animal for running and serious exercise, in most cases much more than a human, even an Olympic runner, can offer. Dogs need other dogs both for socialization and friendship, and for serious play. Otherwise they take out their frustration in some other way; for example, your flowerbeds, your underwear, shoes or furniture. For more information and to subscribe to the service, call Pet Galaxy at 830-885-5335 or 210-526-9680, check out their website at http://PetGalaxyUSA.com or their Facebook page at http://facebook. 25 com/PetGalaxyUSA.

So back to March 19th. As with so many of our beloved little mutts, there was no birth certificate that formally captured the exact date she was born. And, to this day, I have no idea how I picked March 19th. But, alas, that's the date I picked that would forever be HER day! It's the day I celebrate her "birthday" and the day I believe God said to the universe "there's a special mommy out there for you, little one. And, when you become a part of her world, you will totally impact her and her life journey. You, my little scruffy mutt who will soon be named Mico, will become your Mommy's "why” in the work which will drive her total being and become her legacy!” Quite the tall order for a little thing who never topped 10 pounds throughout her whole life! Oh my. While it seems like I lifetime ago I grabbed her out of that shelter, many times it feels like yesterday. It was actually 29 years ago, but I still remember the details like they were yesterday. So for today, I celebrate her and her being. I celebrate she was in my world, and that she rocked it in life and is guiding me in her death. I look at her pictures and smile when I see those ears, those eyes, that "smile." She loved the world 28 10

around her, but she was in love with me, her Mommy. Others could hold her, but only for a moment until she started scrambling to get back in my arms. I was her world, and she certainly was mine! Again, I celebrate her. Occasionally a tear makes its way to my eyes for her, as I think she would love to be a part of my travels and work as it is now. But, for today, I celebrate her, and I cherish the memories when I remember it was all so real. As surreal as it seems, it was all incredibly real! So for today, I will be kind to myself and allow myself the permission to cry, as I remember her love. I will also give myself permission to laugh, as I remember her spirit. For today, I will give myself permission to... just remember and be, for her. Thanks for letting me share a bit of my heart with you today, on her day. Mommy will love you forever, Baby Girl. RIP, my precious Mico.
