untie May had a few scraps on her plate left over from her Christmas dinner. Spot, the family pet, sat up looking oh so cute and begged for those scraps. Auntie May's soft heart took over and she took the turkey skin scraps and gave a small handful to Spot. Later that night, Spot's owner found him groaning in his bed, not able to get comfortable and by the next morning, he had vomited 3 times. Spot's owner took him to see his Veterinarian that afternoon, but by that time he was dehydrated from all the vomiting and the diarrhea that had started. Spot spent 2 days in the hospital on IV's and pain medicine before able to go home. The Veterinarian said that Spot had pancreatitis, but no one really knew how it happened.

s an Allergist, it is not uncommon for me to entertain interesting medical requests. I’ve been asked to diagnose or comment on someone's symptoms in the middle of a party. I’ve also been asked, more than once, to skin-test pets for allergies and consider treating them with immunotherapy. This last request is actually not all that unusual considering how much we love and care for our pets. We suffer from allergies, and not surprisingly, so can they.
12
I have found that some animal hospitals and Veterinarians do offer allergy testing, diagnosis, and treatment. Most often you will find a Vet will test a dog or cat for allergy through issuing a blood test or skin test, which would be conducted much like we skin test a human for a reaction to a specific allergen.While I find the correlation between human and pet seasonal allergy to be interesting and something worth looking into or speaking to your veterinarian about, I would also suggest taking some of the same steps we take as humans to minimize our contact with a suspected allergen, as something that can benefit our furry friends, just as it helps us. One of the most common seasonal allergens present in South Texas is mountain cedar. Mountain cedar typically appears around the end of November and can be present through mid-February. You might often hear friends, during this time, complaining of so-called mountain cedar “fever". Mountain cedar fever is not a true diagnosis. It is a term, that instead, refers to some of the common symptoms of mountain cedar allergy that can include lethargy, sore throat, itching of the eyes and ears, sneezing, congestion and runny nose. Nasal drainage, if left untreated, can sometimes lead to a sinus infection which can present itself with a fever. Hence, cedar fever. It is important to first note that when talking about mountain cedar, it is crucial to understand that, when tested, a positive is a positive. When we test for mountain cedar we typically record the result on a number based system. Interestingly enough, it really does not matter whether your skin test shows a low or high positive result. A higher positive means that a person is more likely to react to mountain cedar in some way, shape, or form of symptoms. His or her symptoms could be mild or severe. Equally important to consider when being tested for a potential allergy is that testing is conducted by a Board Certified Allergist. As a Specialist, an Allergist will have proven education and experience with testing, diagnosis, and treatment in the field of allergy, asthma, and immunology. Second, when treating mountain cedar, it is important to be consistent. Allergy medication, including shots,
immunotherapy drops, and/or over-the-counter allergy medication are most effective when taken everyday, prior to the peak of the mountain cedar season, typically mid-December. The goal is to have the medication well in your system by the season’s peak. Finally, there are steps we can take, especially as pet owners, to minimize coming into contact with mountain cedar pollen. Pollen can cling to our pets’ fur and be carried into our homes. Whether it is mountain cedar in the fall/winter or oak in the spring, I recommend the following to pet owners who suffer from tree allergy : • Bathe pet once weekly • Don’t leave pet outdoors during peak pollen times, especially on windy days • Use gentle pet or baby wipes to clean pet each time he or she returns inside • Refrain from bringing pet into bedroom • Refrain from allowing pet to share couch or pillows with allergic human • Keep pet isolated to non-carpeted areas of home • Purchase a HEPA air purifier Any combination of the above recommendations can help those allergic to mountain cedar feel stronger, healthier, and more productive during the mountain cedar season. After all, can you think of any other region where residents have coined a season after its fall and winter pollen? Happy mountain cedar season, y’all! WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC Q: Last year my Pit Bull was sneezing a lot during Cedar Oak Season. Is there anything preventative I can give him this year with the start of the Cedar season coming? A: Sneezing due to an allergic reaction is common; pet’s can also have contact allergies that affect the skin. If sneezing is the only issue, no treatment is necessary. The sneezing will resolve once Cedar season is over. Your veterinarian must make sure that your pet’s sneezing is due to Cedar because sneezing can be attributed to other medical issues. Dr. Kirby graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1979 and earned his DVM in 1984. Dr. Kirby has been the owner and director of Alamo Heights Pet Clinic since 1997. His veterinary interests are surgery, internal medicine, ultrasonography, and rehabilitation therapy. He uses both a conventional and a holistic approach to medicine. Dr. Kirby treats dogs, cats, birds and exotics. Alamo Heights Pet Clinic: (210) 821-5544. Please email all questions for Dr. Kirby to Dana.texasdogsandcats@gmail.com.

A: If you are considering a live tree this year, here are a few safety ideas: • Place lights and cords as high as possible to prevent burns and electrocution. • Be careful with small ornaments and tinsel placed low on the tree, if they are ingested it could cause an intestinal obstruction. • Cover the water around the base of the tree, the water can contain resins and possible pesticides that can be toxic to your pet(s). • Keep the area around the tree free of needles since these can be a source of irritation to skin and the intestines if ingested. • Edible decorations should be up high on the tree if possible and make sure they are non-toxic • Try to make the tree unapproachable. If you can, place some sort of barrier around the tree so that your pets can’t knock over the tree. • Be careful of plants or food items normally around at Christmas like mistletoe, chocolate, poinsettias, cook-
ies, etc. These things can cause gastrointestinal upset or they can be toxic to your pet.

craftingandgiving T
is the season for giving, and who better to receive than your favorite fluffy friend? Holiday giving can be made into a fun project that the whole family can enjoy! And don’t worry if you don’t have a furry companion of your own to bestow with your do-it-yourself artistic prowess, our shelter animals are in need of your love and generosity too!
Here are some fun and easy craft projects for you and your family:
1. CRAZY CATNIP STUFFERS: If you want your cats to join in on the merriment--without the eggnog! Materials: polyfill, catnip, one pair athletic socks (simple method) OR 2-by-4 inches of felt/fabric with needle and thread (complex method). How To: You can make these as simple or as complex as you want. For the simple method, stuff the socks with polyfill, sprinkle in some catnip, tie the sock opening in a knot, and voila! For the more creative types, place polyfill stuffing in between fabric/felt, sprinkle in the cat nip, and stitch all edges closed. Our shelter kitties love these toys! 2. DRESS TO IMPRESS: The easy way to spiff your animals up in time for holiday parties and cards! Materials: Used collared dress shirt with buttons, fabric tape measure, and scissors. How To: To find the right-sized collared dress shirt for this project, use your fabric measurement tape to measure around your pet’s neck. Take these measurements and your measuring tape and hit up your nearest thrift store! For small dogs and cats, be sure to first look in the kids section. Once you’ve found and purchased a measurement match, carefully cut the collar off the shirt. Slip the collar around your pet’s neck, button in front, and create an instant black tie affair. Decorate with fabric paint for a more festive look!
BY KRISTINE HAWKINS, DVM
3. BRAIDING BONANZA: Super easy (and washable) toy for dogs and cats! Materials: Felt fabric or old t-shirts, jingle ball cat toys, scissors. How To: The size and species of your gift recipient will determine how much material you need. For cats, felt fabric can be cut into 1-inch strips and braided into different lengths. Our shelter cats love small twists (3 to 4 inches in length) to chase and pounce. Sprinkle catnip in the braids for an extra kick! Cats also love longer lengths (up to 12 inches) with jingle bell toys attached that can hang anywhere from door knobs to cat condos or kennel doors. For dogs, wider strips (4 to 6 inches) can be braided into 1 or 2 foot lengths to make colorful and 14
easy tug toys. Remember, all tug playtime should be supervised!
4. PAWSOME MEMORIES: A gift for you or family members - because your babies are wonderful! Materials: Blank art canvas, non-toxic acrylic paint, paper plate, cheap paint brush, soap, and water. How To: You’ll probably want to do this outside--things could get messy! First, wipe clean the paw(s) you plan to use and make sure nails are trimmed. Place a small amount of paint on the paper plate and brush paint liberally onto the paw of choice. Get comfortable with your technique by helping your pet make a few practice prints on a sheet of paper before going forward. Finally, when you two are ready, place your pet’s paw prints on the canvas! The design on canvas may depend on the temperament of your pet--some are more inclined to just walk all over your art. When you’ve achieved the design of your liking, wash your pet’s paws with soap and water before the paint dries. For a more professional look, leave room on the canvas to add a photograph. It could become a family masterpiece to hang on the wall! Interested in donating some of your D.I.Y toys to our pets? We are open every day, except most major holidays, from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm and our staff would be glad to deliver any generous creations and donations to our pets. Please visit SAhumane.org/wishlist for other items our pets are in need of. Happy Howl-idays! Dr. Kristine Hawkins joined the San Antonio Humane Society in April of 2016. A Louisiana native, she grew up in the capitol of Baton Rouge. She attained her undergraduate degree in neurobiology at the University of Texas in Austin. She then returned home to complete her schooling at Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2009. She started life as a veterinarian in private practice, but soon found her calling in shelter medicine and high volume spay/neuter clinics.

So, what kinds of presents are both fun and safe for our pet friends? Veterinary experts recommend the use of interactive toys that encourage exercise and activity. This has the dual benefit of burning calories from overweight pets and also providing a needed outlet for highly active dogs, like the working breeds. After all, a tired dog is a good dog! To help meet this need for entertaining toys, companies like Kong (www.kongcompany.com) and Pet Qwerks (www. petqwerks.com) have developed innovative new ways to keep our pets active. Many of the Kong toys, like the Bounzer or the Wobbler, will bounce in random directions when tossed and are made of very durable rubber. One of the best and least expensive toys to keep indoor kitties moving is any one of the wide variety of Kitty Teaser products. Aikiou (pronounced “I-Q”) (www.aikiou.com) has created a line of interactive feeding stations that simulate hunting and foraging activities. Likewise, Premier Pet Products (www.premier.com) uses their Busy Buddy line of toys to reward dogs for playful, constructive behavior. It’s also very easy to find an amazing array of designer clothing, leashes, collars and even special feeding bowls for your unique friend. But, beyond all of these material things, what other gifts can help make sure that your pet is healthy and well protected? One of the simplest and best ways to keep your pets safe is to make sure that they have permanent identification. Far too many pets are lost or stolen every year and the vast majority of these animals never make it back home to their owners. Have your veterinarian implant a microchip and be sure to keep the registration information current.
16
Another helpful gift idea is a pet health insurance policy. Although Fluffy and Fido may not fully appreciate it, having a policy can really lessen the impact of a traumatic accident, serious injury or substantial illness. When it comes right down to it, all of the special toys, interactive puzzles or unique pet sweaters won’t take the place of the most important thing you can give your pet… your time! Spend some time every day with your pet by engaging them in play or some quiet grooming. It’s the very best thing you can give and your pet will love you all the more. Your veterinarian or professional trainer is also a great source of advice for finding the right activities for your pet’s abilities. He or she can suggest other safe toys that will help keep your pet physically and mentally healthy. Dr. James Peterson is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. oes your pet scratch, lick, bite or chew his/her skin? If so, he /she may have allergies. Environmental allergies (also called atopic dermatitis) affect dogs, cats and many other species. These animals can be allergic to dust, pollens and molds found both inside and outside. Unlike people, who wheeze and sneeze from environmental allergies, pets with atopic dermatitis most often have itchy skin and ears.
18
It’s quite common for these episodes of itchiness to lead to hair loss and even skin or ear infections. Some pets with atopic dermatitis are itchy year round, but others’ itchiness will vary depending upon the time of year (and what’s blooming). Many dogs with atopic dermatitis will lick their paws, scratch their ears, rub their face and scratch at other parts of their body. Cats with atopic dermatitis can be itchy anywhere they want; from their face all the way to their tail. The only true way to diagnose atopic dermatitis is to rule out all other causes of hair loss or itchiness first: flea allergies, food allergies, ringworm, mange etc. This is very important because there is no test that tells us with certainty that a pet has environmental allergies. Once your veterinarian has ruled out all other reasonable causes of itchiness, it is time to consider allergy testing. Allergy testing can be performed in two ways: a blood test and a skin test. A blood test involves sending a blood sample to a laboratory where it is mixed with allergens such as pollens and molds and the laboratory measures any reactions that take place. A skin test involves shaving an area of hair and injecting allergens under the skin to see if the skin reacts. These tests are used to determine what to put into the pet’s allergy serum. The serum is a combination of allergens that is either injected under the skin or given by mouth on a regular basis. The idea behind
this therapy is that by frequently exposing the immune system to small amounts of allergens, the pet won’t react as strongly when he/she comes in contact with that allergen in the environment. In essence, we are trying to “retrain” the immune system to ignore those allergens. This therapy benefits about 70% of pets and is usually quite safe as a long term treatment. Other treatment options include antihistamines, medications designed to dampen the immune system, and medicated baths. If your pet is itchy or keeps getting skin or ear infections, ask your veterinarian about allergies. It may take some time to determine if your pet has atopic dermatitis, but once that diagnosis is made you can work together to improve your pet’s quality of life. Dr. Caitlin Contreary is a board-certif ied veterinary dermatologist who works part-time at Mission Veterinary Specialists. She received her doctorate of veterinary medicine at Louisiana State University and completed her residency at the University of California, Davis. She enjoys reading and spending time with her pets.

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA
W
hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. {December 2016}
I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.

safe&happyholidays I love Christmas!! Every year my home is 'over the top' decorated for the Holidays!! The big QUESTION is: Is my house safe for my dogs? Dogs are fascinated by the smells and textures of all the new things that are now appearing all over the house. This is normal curiosity. Make sure your tree is in a sturdy stand and attach it to a window or wall with a clear string. Many years ago, I had an adolescent Golden Retriever, he pulled the Christmas Tree over onto himself. At this point I wasn't concerned about many broken ornaments...my concern was my wonderful dog being traumatized. He was fine, he moved very quickly and was only hit by part of the tree. It happens....so be prepared. Since then all my trees are secured: a screw on the side of my fireplace, a curtain rod, an air vent. No one knows except me. Look at the round ornaments on your tree. Do you think they look like a ball to your retriever? Yes, it does! The problem is the dog ingesting it, and ingesting things like ribbons, gift wrap, tree lights, or even chewing on those extra electrical cords we have everywhere during the holidays. Also, stay away from decorating with candy canes, pop corn or cranberry garlands on the tree. The smells are just too tempting to your dog. Leave the leftovers for the humans. Rich fatty foods can cause stomach problems for your dog.
{December 2016}
Caution guests about feeding your dog scraps from the table. Also, don't let Fido eat all his treats or gifts on the same day. Save some until later. Management. Use a baby gate to keep your dogs out of the Christmas room when not being supervised, or put your dog in a crate. Another idea is to put a play pen fence around the tree. Don’t let an emergency trip to the veterinarian ruin your Holiday Fun! Use these tips to prevent any unwanted doggie disasters. But, make sure you have your veterinary emergency room phone number handy to be prepared...just in case. Holidays are the best, but they can be hectic. Relax! Enjoy and don't forget to spend quality time with your dog.

petsittersconference
N
ecessity is the mother of invention and that’s no truer than for the Texas Pet Conference. In 2015 Michelle Romano of Waggs & Purrs and I were discussing pet sitting conferences and how we benefitted from getting together with other business owners, discussing industry issues, concerns, trends and bouncing ideas off each other. We valued learning from industry leaders, veterinarians, pet nutrition experts and business leaders from outside our industry too. Unfortunately so many conferences are very expensive to attend, involved travel and significant time away from our businesses.
The idea of the Texas Pet Sitters Conference was born from that conversation with 3 goals in mind:
BY CATHY VAUGHN
1. Make the conference very affordable (so new businesses could come and learn too without a huge investment!) 2. Have it close enough that attendees from Texas could drive if they wanted to 3. Condense the information and sessions into just a couple of days to keep the conference short and business owners would be away from their businesses as little as necessary Keeping these important key ideas in mind, Michelle and I put together a plan. Neither of us had ever put together a conference before, but by working together and learning as we went along, we were able to build an extraordinary event that was fun, informative and a great experience of networking and education for everyone! We also made the event pet friendly so business owners could bring their personal pets with them! Michelle and I both operate pet sitting businesses that service the same areas so it would seem to people that we are “competition.” Well, truthfully we are. But that’s the GREAT thing about pet people! We always put the pets (and those that care for them) first! Michelle and I have known each other a long time, have similar business minds and have often enjoyed meeting to discuss where our industry is headed. So, it was easy to set aside the ‘business competition’ aspect and focus on making a
stellar conference so others could connect and build those business relationships too. The conference became the perfect collaborative effort. There was an astounding 50 attendees to our first conference - far surpassing our expectations and making it apparent that a conference like this was much needed and everyone agreed a second conference was definitely in order. Surprising to us, we had attendees from other states too! We welcomed attendees from Georgia, Washington, Illinois, Louisiana and Oklahoma and made them all honorary Texans for the weekend! February 24-26, 2017 marks the second annual Texas Pet Sitters Conference. We are looking forward to doubling our attendance with an expected 100 in attendance! Are you a pet parent that hires a dog walker or pet sitter for your babies? Be sure to tell them about the conference! It will be held in Selma, TX at Bluebonnet Bunk’n Biscuit so they won’t be far from home! Continued education on the best business practices and industry standards always leads to a healthier, happier pet in the care of a true pet professional! If you’ve ever considered starting a professional pet sitting business, this is a great resource for you to learn what it really takes to be a success. Some attendees have been professionally pet sitting for more than 20 years! We have a special rate for Texas Dogs & Cats readers! Enter Coupon Code TXDogs to get $20 off the registration price! Come check us out at www. TXPetSitters.com for more information and to register!
