o matter what non-profit animal shelter you visit across the United States of America, there is one common struggle, “Do we have enough money to continue the mission of saving lives?” You run into those moments where the need is great, yet the available funds will not allow you to acquire the best option. The Animal Defense League of Texas (ADL) was at that moment when a community partner stepped up to offer the dream solution.

adoptablepets at the Animal Defense League of Texas Hi, I’m Huckleberry, the cover dog! If you think I’m “interestinglooking” now, you should have seen me before! I lived with a cleft palate for two years. That means there was no division between the roof of my mouth and my nose – it was kind of all one part, so my tongue stuck out my nose on one side and I had just one nostril. Luckily I was able to eat and breathe all right, but it wasn’t pretty. Then the vet here did amazSHEPHERD MIX | Male | 2 years 4 months ing surgery, and now I have two nostrils and my tongue is in the right place. I’m as happy as I can be, spreading joy to everyone, practicing my kisses constantly and ready to start my new life as a normal dog. Wouldn’t you like to be part of that? Huckleberry is neutered, micro-chipped, and current on his vaccinations, so stop by to meet him or visit his pet profile on ADL’s website at www.adltexas.org. HUCKLEBERRY

I’m such a happy girl, just look at my beautiful smile! I have lots to be happy about, thanks to the ADL hospital staff, I am a cancer survivor! Now I can playfully romp around, play with my toys, and be my energetic self. Now I just need to find my forever home! I’m the type of gal that will greet you with lots of hugs. If you think you can handle 68 pounds of my happy self-giving you hugs and attention, then I think you should visit me! I like children, but DOBERMAN PINSCHER | FEMALE | 5 yrs 8 mo's I may be a bit strong and energetic for the small kiddos. For this reason, it’s preferable that I live with children that are 12 years old or older. Have a dog friend for me? I’d love to meet them before we move in together. Please bring them by the shelter so that we can see how well we get along. Overall, I’d make a loyal companion to my forever person, and I hope that person can be you. AVA

BY BRADLY WRIGHT

Our donated 1990-something GMC van, used to transport animals from the City of San Antonio’s Animal Care Services had seen its better days. There were times that ADL couldn’t transfer animals into our shelter because our van would not start. Also, the cost of maintaining the van and the lingering risk of a break-down, on a typically hot San Antonio summer day, started to mount. Realizing we needed to start looking for a replacement vehicle, before the old van finally stopped working for good, we put together a budget and asked our friends at North Park Subaru if they could help us find an affordable replacement van. North Park Subaru had already proven themselves to be a great partner. The Animal Defense League was fortunate to have been selected as North Park Subaru’s “Hometown Charity” during Subaru’s national Share the Love event. When a customer bought or leased a new vehicle they would have the option to donate $250 to a national charity or the selected “Hometown Charity.” North Park Subaru decided to make an impact all year long, and agreed to sponsor, feature, and pay the

adoption fee for one dog each week. Fifty two of the 53 pets selected as the North Park Subaru's Pet Star of the Week have been adopted. In 2014, North Park Subaru provided the vital components of bowls and beds for the newly constructed community kennels, accommodating up to 126 dogs. Understanding ADL’s need for a large, safe and reliable van, North Park Subaru offered to partner with ADL. North Park Subaru helped pay for more than half the cost for a 2015 Ford Transit van now named the “Rescue Ride.” The Rescue Ride offers a very reliable way to transport dogs and cats from the City of San Antonio’s Animal Care Service facility to ADL’s main campus. Since the van is larger, it allows us to save more animals with each trip. The impact of this donation and partnership with North Park Subaru will continue to save the lives of unwanted, abandoned, neglected, and abused animals for many years. The Animal Defense League of Texas would like to thank general manager, Chad Lyons, and his staff at North Park Subaru for the years of their support and partnership to make a real and sustained difference in our community.

* Huckleberry is available for adoption. Please see opposite page for more details.

SASSY

DOMESTIC SHORTHAIR | Female | 2 years

So they call me Sassy, I try not to be too sassy but sometimes I can’t help it. I’m still young, only 1 years old, so I have a lot of energy. I’m not usually interested in play time but I’m still an active feline! Please visit me in the cattery, and let’s find out if you’re the one who can provide me with a forever home and love me for the sassy girl that I am.

I’ve had a pretty rough start in life. All I know is I was left at a boarding kennel and when my parents didn’t come to get me, the kennel called them and they said they didn’t want me any more. The kennel said I was friendly and playful when they brought me here to find a new family, but now I don’t know who to trust. I’ll eventually start to warm up to people that RETRIEVER / SHEPHERD Mix | FEMALE | 1 yr 6 mo's I know and see often. I’m good with the people who have been taking care of me, and I’m even learning commands. I know that if I’m given time to learn to trust, I’ll be a loving, loyal dog. HARLEY

WENDY

DOMESTIC SHORTHAIR | Female | 4 years 3 months

I like to spend most of my time in my cat bed sleeping and minding my own business around the cattery. I’m a shy gal, but that’s ok, because that doesn’t mean I can’t love you! Just give me some quiet time, food, a cozy bed, and I’ll be content. Why not give a kitty like me a chance? Plus, I have this unique grey marking on top of my head that makes me look cool. Come by and visit me!

I’m a friendly pretty girl who likes the high places around in the cattery. You can find me near the ceiling hanging out with my cat friends. I’ve been at ADL since January of last year searching for my perfect home, but I’m having a little trouble finding that special person to take me home. I need a special person who will be willing to provide me with the love and care that I need. What kind of care? Well, I need to DOMESTIC SHORTHAIR | Female | 8 yrs 4 mo's be on a special diet for my kidneys. If you’d be willing to give me a chance at a forever home, please visit me. I may be hanging up high looking down at you, or you may find me on the ground looking up at you for love. Spend some time with me to see how big my heart is when I am around the right person. GINGER-SPICE

THE ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: Spay/neuter surgery, age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, internal and external parasite treatment, heartworm prevention, 30 days of 24PetWatch Pet Insurance, a starter bag of Heritage Ranch by H-E-B pet food and more! Fees may be different during adoption specials.

Q: I have 2 large male, neutered, American shorthair cats. I recently noticed a brown speck in the right eye of my eldest cat who is 8 years old. I’ve not noticed any type of additional tearing or any discomfort he seems to have from it. I just didn’t want to have it go unchecked if there may be a medical concern or if this is a sign the body is trying to tell me about. —Thank You, Rick A: Black growths like the one you describe can be representative of iridial cyst or a benign accumulation of melanin, or a melanoma. When possible, your cat should be examined by your veterinarian. Q: How often does my dog have to have his teeth cleaned and is it necessary to have blood work drawn before having his teeth cleaned? —Thank You, Jennifer V.

A: Most dogs need dentals around five years of age, but there are a few that need dentals earlier in life. Small breeds have a propensity for dental tartar and periodontal disease. Recently, an article in a veterinary journal about schnauzers addresses this problem. Blood work before dentals is recommended. There are times when finances do not allow this but as a general rule; blood work is a good thing to do. Results of pre-surgical blood tests will reveal the liver and kidney function and their ability to process the anesthetic drug. Dental prophylaxis for dogs and cats is very important in the prevention of further disease in other organs, i.e. heart and kidneys.

jawfractures

FEBRUARY IS PET DENTAL HEALTH MONTH Giving hope for a happier, longer life!

N

o matter how careful we are with our dogs and cats, accidents can happen. When a pet’s jaw is broken or dislocated, it can be a stressful experience for both the owner and the pet. Common causes include being hit by a car, being bitten by a larger animal, or falling from a height.

This 13-year-old Chihuahua had never received any dental care. He has severe periodontal disease that has caused generalized bone loss around the teeth. Many teeth have been lost and as a result the lower jaws are fractured on both sides. Extracting the remaining teeth can prevent further bone loss and allow the jaws to heal.

BY MJ REDMAN, DVM, DAVDC

Even cats who don’t go outside can fall and injure their faces. Fortunately jaw bones can heal very quickly after repair. The goal of fixing jaw fractures is to restore normal function to the mouth, meaning that the mouth can open and close without any discomfort. Non-invasive repair techniques such as intraoral splints and temporarily bonding the canine teeth together can have excellent results while avoiding further damage to the teeth and jaws. If you think your pet has a broken jaw, you should have them examined on an emergency basis and have surgery as soon as they are stable. An anesthetized oral exam with dental radiographs and/or a CT scan will be necessary to diagnose and determine the best treatment. Your pet may need a soft diet, pain medication and a loose muzzle to support the jaw while preparing for surgery. Young growing animals require special consideration when a jaw fracture occurs because the injury to the bone may affect its growth as well as the development of the adult tooth buds. Cats sometimes need to have a temporary feeding tube for nutritional support. Small breed dogs are prone to severe periodontal disease that may weaken the jaw, predisposing it to break. This type of fracture can be difficult to heal due to the poor quality of the bone but there are almost always methods of repair that can restore function to the mouth. The images above are two of the many jaw fracture cases that I saw in 2016. 14

This 7-month-old English Bulldog fractured her right lower jaw when she was hit by a car.

A combination of interfragmentary wiring and an intraoral splint were used to stabilize the fracture. Eight weeks later, the fracture has healed with excellent alignment.

Dr. MJ Redman is the boardcertified veterinary dental specialist at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency and is the only in the San Antonio area. Prior to joining MissionVet in 2014, Dr. Redman owned Pacific Animal Dentistry, a mobile veterinary dentistry practice based near Seattle where she provided advanced dental services on a referral basis to local small animal hospitals. She then spent three years working in a practice limited to dentistry and oral surgery at the Animal Dental Center located in Maryland, a busy 3-doctor practice focusing solely on dental procedures including complex oral surgery. Dr. Redman has extensive experience treating a variety of oral pathologies including periodontal disease, fractured teeth and jaws, malocclusions, stomatitis, masticatory myositis, gingival hyperplasia, cleft palates and oral neoplasia.

dogtraining

D

at Your Local San Antonio Humane Society

og training isn’t only beneficial for you, it’s beneficial for your dog too! Owning a dog is a commitment unto itself, and the role of pet owner can be made more difficult when the family dog is exemplifying unwanted or disobedient behaviors. This includes behaviors such as jumping, eliminating, or leash pulling. These behaviors can also make it difficult for shelter pets to find their forever homes. It’s the belief of the San Antonio Humane Society and our Dog Trainer, Jenna Reber, that when adopted dogs return to the shelter for unwanted behavior, it’s often behavior that can be easily corrected with a few dedicated dog training sessions.

BY VERONICA ARAIZA

It’s not uncommon to find Jenna or our dog training volunteers walking or working with some of our shelter pets—especially those incredibly active or overeager dogs who just enjoy pulling our staff along by their leash. We do just about everything we can to make our pets more adoptable in the eyes of visitors, and that includes dog training! So if you leave with a pooch who has an affinity for treats and who has the “sit,” “shake,” or “watch me” command down to a tee, be sure to thank our hard working dog trainer and dog training volunteers. Jenna Reber has been with us since the fall of 2016 and she has roughly 15 years of experience working with dogs and other animals, including service animals. Jenna received her ABCDT certification in 2010. She offers public one-on-one or group classes certified by the American Kennel Club, basic levels of obedience classes, behavior modification classes, puppy programs, and puppy play times (gotta start them young!). And because we want our adopters to take advantage of every resource available to keep their forever pooch in their

forever home, we offer a discounted rate for dogs adopted from the San Antonio Humane Society! At our shelter, we focus on positive reinforcement to make training fun for both dog owner and dog. Positive training techniques create a great bonding experience between pets and their owners and will teach dogs skills they will use the rest of their life. For more information on our dog training services, please visit SAhumane.org/dogtraining. For additional questions or to reserve your spot in our next upcoming class, please e-mail training@sahumane. org or call (210) 226-7461. Veronica Araiza is the Communication Associate for the San Antonio Humane Society. She is a recent graduate from UTSA and is a native to San Antonio. She currently shares her home with her Belgian Malinois, Darwin, and Shiba Inu mix, Emma.

Celebrating 15 Years! N estled at the foot of the Texas Hill Country, just a few miles north of San Antonio, is a country club; but not just any country club. This unique clubhouse and resort offers everything YOUR PET could ever want for training, playing, and boarding! Whether you and your pet are looking for fast paced agility classes or napping under one of the many oak trees surrounding this 13 acre oasis, you will find it all… at K9 Country Club and Training Academy.

BY CATHERINE LARIA

"I can't believe it’s been 15 years since we opened our doors! We are so blessed to have become part of such a wonderful neighborhood and community." says Catherine Laria, founder and owner of K9 Country Club. Her team of professional caretakers feel pet people are the best and they love having become a one-of-a-kind home away from home. In October 2002, K9 Country Club was born and opened their doors with just 18 kennels. The laundry room, kitchen, bathroom, office, and even the Cattery… were all housed in a 700sqft room. Fifteen years later they boast 63-runs and a beautiful clubhouse style facility with a separate laundry room, two kitchens, two bathrooms, offices, a full service grooming room…AND a separate Cat jungle for their furry purrers. They have an 8700sqft training yard and an amazing 1/2 acre fenced in Beach Club water park for Fido!! Each year K9CC expands or improves on something they can pass along to their customers. They've added more staff, nationally acclaimed trainers, and a full-service grooming department 7-days a week. They have a unique membership opportunity unike any other in Texas offering you and your pet access to the facility when it's closed as well as many savings in 20

all of their services. I mean what pet doesn't deserve to have it's very own country club membership? Plus they're the only facility in town to have a full-size K9 Health Gym and prefessional training in nearly every dog sport available. Agility, Herding, Rally, Obedience, even Scent work, they offer it all. Recently K9CC has been asked to partner with Veteran Assistance Dogs of Texas to train a number of dogs that will assist veterans with PTSD. "We are so incredibly proud and honored to be asked to help with such a worthy cause. I was blown away with the vast need for service dogs and the lengthy and expensive process it is to have one properly and officially trained." said Nicholas Wallace, Training Director at K9CC. If you haven't been out to visit this unique “country club” now is the time. K9 Country Club will be offering fun events and specials throughout 2017 in honor of their birthday! Plan to join them for puppy socials, agility fun matches, free puppcakes in October, and the biggest Beach Blanket Bow-Wow Luau, SATURDAY, JUNE 10th!! Like them on Facebook for the latest specials and events happening throughout the year at facebook.com/ k9countryclubtexas or on line at www.k9countryclub. net for a full schedule of classes and specials.

makeover BEFORE

AFTER

Meet “Caitlin”, Prior to her rescue, Caitlin was found in very poor conditions. Due to neglect and Lack of care Caitlin developed bilateral cataracts resulting in emergency surgery for the removal of her left eye along with majority of her teeth. After patiently waiting two months at the shelter Caitlin had still not been adopted. Unfortunately, because of the overall poor conditions she was left in, Caitlin was basically a diamond in the rough and was overlooked by many because of her poor appearance ...She was in desperate need of a Canine Couture Makeover. Canine Couture Is a third-generation full-service Pet Salon and Spa that works diligently with the Animal Defense League in making sure each pet gets a second chance at life, rather it be an all-over makeover or a simple a nail trim and file. Canine Couture has a way of finding the inner beauty in each individual pet and brings out the best in them, because let’s face it when we look better we feel better. Immediately after Caitlin’s Spa day the volunteers from ADL reported that Caitlin’s whole persona was bigger and brighter than ever! She had high spirits and a tail that never stopped wagging! It didn’t take long for others to take notice of Caitlin’s confidence and happy spirit, in fact, within 24 hours she had a list of potential new pet parents who wanted to adopt her. Caitlin now resides all the way in New Hampshire where she has a family she can now call her own with all the love and attention she once didn’t know she could have! Its situations like these that makes what we do on a daily basis not just a “job” but a true “passion” for us here at Canine Couture Pet Spa & Boarding.
