he month of February is filled with sweets and treats with both Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras to keep you happy. In recent years, February has become notable in the veterinary community for being the month where we celebrate the benefits of good dental health in our patients. Regular dental cleanings and checkups are important for human oral health and they are also important for our four-legged friends. Surprisingly, the American Veterinary Dental College states that, “by three years of age, most dogs and cats have some evidence of periodontal disease.”

BY LESLIE HOPES, ASSOCIATE VETERINARIAN AT THE SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY

So what exactly is periodontal disease? Periodontal disease is the term that is applied to the combined conditions of gingivitis and periodontitis. The term gingivitis, which is defined as the inflammation of the gums, is probably familiar to those of us who fib somewhat to their dentist about their flossing frequency. The term periodontitis may be less familiar to many and describes the loss of bone and soft tissue around the teeth. In the cartoon world, you could equate periodontitis with teeth that flap in the wind on the face of a cute little cartoon animal. While funny in a cartoon, periodontitis in our pets is no laughing matter! I bet you’re reading this article and thinking, “Three years? My dog is five and his breath isn’t bad so he must be one of the lucky ones!” This common assumption by pet owners leads them to delay having their pet’s oral health evaluated, but I’m going to share some free veterinary advice with you: have your pet’s oral health regularly evaluated by your veterinarian! Yearly examinations to assess oral health and address problems quickly will save you and your pet from unnecessary discomfort and suffering. Let’s get into the nitty gritty of periodontal disease. Plaque, the sticky substance on the surface of teeth, mixes with enzymes in saliva and hardens into calculus (tartar). Take a peek into your pet’s mouth, particularly around the back molars, and I bet you’ll find calculus. It’s just

that common! Now consider this: the calculus you see is only the tip of the iceberg and is not the main concern regarding periodontal disease. The most damage actually occurs below the gum line and in the bone. How is it possible to evaluate this space beneath the gum? We utilize dental x-rays to evaluate bone and the ligaments around the teeth and special probes to search for pockets beneath the gums. These procedures require pets to be still, so anesthesia is required for a complete veterinary dental oral health evaluation. Periodontitis can be classified into four stages depending on the amount of tooth support/bone that has been lost. Stage 1 means that only inflammation is present and no bone loss has occurred. The stages progress in increments of 25% until Stage 4 where more than 50% of tooth support has been lost. Once a patient has developed periodontitis, it is important for the veterinary team and the owner to work together to prevent progression of the disease. A common plan that is utilized incorporates annual or semi-annual dental cleanings and daily tooth brushing with supplemental dental treats. Numerous dental treats are available on today’s market and it is important to consult with your veterinarian to find the type that they recommend and believe will be most beneficial for your pet. One of the most common dental issues that occurs in the mouths of our feline friends is a phenomenon referred to as tooth resorption. Tooth resorption is unique

to cats and occurs when the dentin in the tooth erodes resulting in damage that cannot be repaired. While many causes for this condition have been suggested, the exact cause has not been determined. Cornell University reports that tooth resorption affects an estimated 20 percent to 60 percent of all cats. Resorptive lesions can occur in any tooth and lesions in different teeth can progress at different speeds. Resorptive lesions are painful and your cat may show signs of oral discomfort such as chewing on only one side or “chattering” their teeth when the lesion is touched. If you suspect your cat has resorptive lesion, it is important to have it evaluated by a veterinarian as the only treatment for a resorptive tooth lesion is complete extraction of the tooth. Broken or chipped teeth are very common in our canine patients. Chewing on rough or hard objects often results in chipped or broken molars or premolars while trauma (rough play, automobile collisions, etc.) usually re-

sults in damage to the canine teeth. There are many ways in which a tooth can break and it is important to remember that a broken tooth is painful. Incredible advancements in the veterinary dental field have been made allowing for many treatments to be offered to our pets that were formerly only available to humans. Extraction, while still common, is not the only treatment available to our dogs and cats with broken teeth. Root canals, performed by specialized veterinarians, have become more readily available and offer a chance to salvage a broken tooth. Hopefully I’ve provided you with a glimpse into the vast field of veterinary dentistry and given you a new perspective on your pet’s chompers. While we do celebrate veterinary oral health during the month of February, it is so important to your pet’s health and happiness to monitor oral health throughout the whole year.

Isabella and Charlotte

BY MELADEE GOMEZ

irst came Isabella (Bella), in 2010! I originally got her for my mom as a gift, but after awhile she couldn’t care for her so I inherited her. Her favorite hobby is to do what dachshunds are bred to do, hunt small vermin! She could do that all day! But the rest of her time is spent lounging and coming to work with me at Sit Means Sit! She’s chalk full of tricks and a great smuggler! Next came Charlotte! One of the best pit bulls I’ve ever had. I went with a friend to look at puppies for her that someone was giving away. I had it set in my mind that I wasn’t going to get one because puppies are a lot of work! But as soon as I saw Charlotte, I fell in love! Very mellow at heart, but loves to please! She doesn’t take her eyes off of me unless she’s asleep. She likes to help with dogs in training at Sit Means Sit by being a distraction so the other dogs have to ignore her and focus on us. She’s great at it too! She used to be terrified of a lot of things like loud sounds and going around people/dogs. After almost a year of hard work and training with Sit Means Sit, I’ve seen drastic changes. She’s definitely a happier, more confident dog!

ON LOCATION AT THE PUP STOP

he Pup Stop was established in 2014. We were a very small salon with only one groomer. Very quickly we realize there was a great demand for quality grooming in the area when our client base grew beyond our current resources. We soon added another groomer and a full-time bather. It was at this point we made the decision to focus on quality rather than quantity. By the end of 2016, the pressure of the growing demand for our services required us to expand again. Adding yet another groomer, we were able to grow the business, but realized to keep the level of quality high, we would have to limit our client base or find another solution. Due to the space limitations, we

BY CURTIS HASTINGS

were not comfortable doing any type of boarding and were out of space for more grooming. By 2017 it was clear a new facility was necessary to keep up. Many of our current client were asking for overnight boarding and daycare. So, plans for expansion were developed and we started to look for a new location. We found a spot just a couple of doors down and started the planning and construction for a new salon. By November 2017 we had completed the construction were completely moved into the new space. The new location was almost 3 times the size of the old location. This allowed us to grow the grooming business and offer daycare and overnight boarding with plenty of space for the dogs to play.

dentalradiographs beyond the tip of the iceberg

D

ental radiographs (also known as dental x-rays) are available for pets just as they are for humans. The film or digital sensor is placed in the mouth and requires the pet to be perfectly still without anyone holding them. For this reason, dental radiographs are generally taken when a pet is under anesthesia and are an essential part of the oral exam.

This dog has severe periodontal disease. This tooth should be extracted but it should be done very carefully to avoid fracturing the jaw.

These cat teeth looked normal, but dental radiographs show that one of them is reabsorbing and should be removed.

BY MJ REDMAN, DVM, DAVDC

Many veterinary hospitals perform dental radiographs on every patient who is getting their teeth cleaned. In dogs and cats, the roots of the teeth are as big as and often bigger than the crowns (the part of the tooth above the gum line), a significant area that can only be seen with dental radiographs. One study showed that 30-40% of dental problems in dogs and cats are missed unless dental radiographs are taken. Dental radiographs are essential for the diagnosis of problems such as abscessed teeth, tooth resorption, periodontal disease and impacted teeth. Early diagnosis of problems like these can prevent your pet from suffering from pain and infection. Dental radiographs can help prevent accidental jaw fractures during tooth extractions by showing abnormally shaped roots and areas of bone loss around teeth. They can also be used to verify that teeth have been completely extracted. Another study showed that tooth roots were left behind in over 80% of cases when dental radiographs were not used during routine tooth extractions. If you think that your pet has a dental problem, or even if they are just getting a cleaning, ask your veterinarian for dental radiographs. 14

Dr. MJ Redman is the board certified veterinarydental specialist at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency and is the only one in the San Antonio area. Prior to joining MissionVet in 2014, Dr. Redman owned Pacific Animal Dentistry, a mobile veterinary dentistry practice where she provided advanced dental services on a referral basis to local small animal hospitals. She then spent three years working in a practice limited to dentistry and oral surgery at a busy 3-doctor practice focusing solely on dental procedures including complex oral surgery. Dr. Redman has extensive experience treating a variety of oral pathologies including periodontal disease, fractured teeth and jaws, malocclusions, stomatitis, masticatory myositis, gingival hyperplasia, cleft palates and oral neoplasia.

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA

W

hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. 16

I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.

Q: How long can keep out pets outside during very cold weather? A: This is a broad question. Generally all pets should be inside protective shelter under 5.0 degrees farhenheit. Of course, being_in the house is best but if not possible then an enclosed area protected from wind, a heat source and water that is not frozen. My concern is older pets that require warmth for their aging bodies and arthritis. They cannot afford to be stressed and cold. Common sense is best in taking_care of your pets and you can always put yourself in their place to decide what is best for them.

Q: My dog sometimes gets into garbage and eats human food. Is there a acid relief medicine I can give her? A: The question of what type of antacids actually leads me to a much more important subject related to this. Foods in the trash or table foods can be deadly to your pets (rich meats, ham, old seafood, moldy foods, etc.) We just reated a lab for mycotoxin toxicity from eating old moldy food in trash (very serious}. So to answer your question, you will not need antacids. If your pets are in the trash call your veterinarian for the best treatment.

If you live in Stone Oak, Encino or any of the adjacent communities, Pet Galaxy’s new coach bus pickup and delivery service may soon be coming to a bus stop near you, or for an additional fee, directly to your home. The new offering is a subscription service customized for each individual family and canine. The company will pick up your dogs every morning and drop off your happy and satisfied best friend every evening. During the day, the dogs will be provided plenty of play time for exercise with all their canine friends, access to playing various fun enrichment games such as “Use Your Nose to Find the Treat” and retriever games such as having a staff member throw a stick, tennis ball or frisbee. If desired, dogs may even participate in formal obedience training instructed by one of the company’s professional dog trainers. Even all-important nap-time is scheduled for each dog at strategic times during the day. Each bus can safely transport over 50 dogs (and cats), which means this is a limited offering on a first come, first serve basis, especially targeting families in the Stone Oak and Encino areas. Pet Galaxy is located about 20 minutes’ drive north of Stone Oak on Hwy 281, and has been offering daycare, lodging, grooming and training services for almost 10 years running. The facility occupies almost 6 acres in the city of Spring Branch, and is arguably best known for their huge outdoor doggie play yards, and as Lynn Haegeland, Director of Operations, adds “Please don’t forget our fantastic staff, and our service that we work so hard to ensure is second to none.” Most facilities located in and around the city of San Antonio offer either tiny indoor-only play areas, or in a few cases, a small outdoor play area. However, common for most of these, is that they are usually much too undersized for any real doggie play to materialize. If you have seen one of these facilities, you may have noticed how the dogs mostly stand around looking at each other, and the only break in the monotony is whenever a staff member decides to take a walk around the area. In the latter case, most of the dogs will simply follow the hu{February man to see if2018} he or she has any fun ideas.

PET GALAXY'S NEW BUSES

Pet Galaxy, in contrast, is located in the beautiful Hill Country north of San Antonio. The facility covers almost 6 acres, and provides large outdoor play yards featuring natural ground cover and plenty of oak trees with squirrels and other fun wildlife. The largest of the yards even includes a palm-tree encircled in-ground doggie swimming pool with a 7-foot water fall and a giant oyster with a pearl that spits water. Your furry friends can run, play, swim and just be a dog to their hearts’ desire. A visit would quickly convince you that these are the happiest dogs in San Antonio and beyond, bar none. But don’t simply take our word for it, take a look at some of the videos and many photos on the company’s Facebook page (http://facebook.com/PetGalaxyUSA). “Many of these canines’ families initially told us that their dogs did not like other dogs, or did not like to play at all.”, Lynn points out. “The reason was that they had previously taken their furry friends to some other facility with much smaller, or virtually non-existent, play yards. They could not believe their own eyes when we showed them video of their best friends running, swimming and playing uninhibited.”, Lynn affirms with a proud smile. As all informed dog owners know, it is absolutely essential for canines large and small to get plenty of exercise. Dogs have a vast surplus of energy, referred to by experts as “predatory energy”. This is the energy store originally utilized by the animal in pre-historic times, when dogs had to hunt for their own food just like other predators. The energy is still there, creating a very strong craving in the animal for running and serious exercise, in most cases much more than a human, even an Olympic runner, can offer. Dogs need other dogs both for socialization and friendship, and for serious play. Otherwise they take out their frustration in some other way; for example, your flowerbeds, your underwear, shoes or furniture. For more information and to subscribe to the service, call Pet Galaxy at 830-885-5335 or 210-526-9680, check out their website at http://PetGalaxyUSA.com or their Facebook page at http://facebook. 25 com/PetGalaxyUSA.

what you didn’t know about

socializingyourpuppy

S

o you have a new puppy and you know that socializing your puppy can be an overwhelming and exciting task. But what does socialization mean? A quick search online will give you countless articles advising that owners expose their pup to as many dogs, people, and children in order to foster a well-balanced and fearless dog. However, did you know that socialization should include things such as sensations, sounds, textures, and more? What about the fact that letting your dog say hello to everyone they meet might actually be detrimental to their growth?

BY MISIA BIELICKI, TRAINER; SIT MEANS SIT

An aspect of training that is often skipped by both experienced and first-time owners is exposing your dog to specific sounds such as alarms, horns, and fans. The sounds of the human world can be very jarring to a sheltered dog, but a puppy will be curious and quickly comfortable. How about floor textures such as wood, linoleum, carpet, grass, tile, concrete, asphalt, or gravel? Perhaps you’ve seen someone attempting to walk their dog up some stairs for the first time and the dog flattens to the ground, refusing to move. These situations might be avoided if you expose your puppy early on, but presenting something to your dog is only half the battle. So how can we ensure that it’s a positive and beneficial experience? An important part of training is tailoring your responses to your dog’s personality. For example, if your pup seems fearful of something, you shouldn’t simply expose them and give them a treat. You may end up rewarding their fear and reinforcing the wrong behavior. Instead, turn it into a game where you reward your pup for mastering their fear. This will encourage your puppy to look to you for leadership while also helping them build trust in difficult situations. Let’s flip the situation around. You have a fearless puppy who loves making new friends. In this case, it may actually be detrimental to let them say hi to everyone. Puppies are learning what to expect of the real world and those experiences carry into their adult lives. When you go to the grocery store, do you stop and shake every person’s hand you see? No, of 26

course not! If we teach our dogs to greet everyone and then suddenly change the rules on them, they may become frustrated and reactive. Try this quick trick: every other time someone wants to let their dog meet yours or pet your adorable puppy, politely decline. If you have trouble saying no, explain that your puppy is in training and most people will be very understanding! This will show your puppy a balanced view of the world - “sometimes I get to meet that new person or dog and sometimes I don’t!” As with all things regarding our furry family members, there are many nuances to their personalities which will require a personal touch. If you’re not quite sure how to get started or you’ve encountered something you don’t know how to handle, consult a canine professional. Misia Bielicki is a dog trainer who originally began her professional career in Accounting. After living la vida cubicle for 3 years, she found herself unfulfilled and began searching for a new career path. Along the way, she began working at Austin Pets Alive! and realized she’d found her calling: connecting families with their canine companions and teaching dogs the skills needed to live harmoniously
