LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER WOW! -Has it really been two years since we started? It seems like only yesterday that we were in the San Antonio Humane Society offices planning out this new venture. Our goals were threefold; to provide responsible information to pet owners in the San Antonio metro area, to provide awareness of the efforts of various groups that were striving to make San Antonio a no-kill city, and third, to have fun and touching stories about local people’s pets. The only missing piece of the puzzle was support from businesses, and support came through pet sitters, dog walkers, boarders, trainers, groomers, vets, pet boutiques, and just regular businesses that loved their pets. Fortunately, all came through to make our vision a reality. Numerous times we heard business owners tell us their policy was not to advertise, but they would make an exception for our magazine, which made me feel like everyone’s hard work was validated. Now, that we are firmly entrenched in the San Antonio pet community, we will not rest on our laurels , but strive to make our third year even more exciting for you-the readers. Thank You, for helping us celebrate two years in San Antonio! Sincerely, Dana Raimondi Tell our advertisers you heard about them in Texas Dogs & CatsSan Antonio! SELLING

yourpetfriendlyhome

A

s the housing market heats up, many homeowners are considering what can make their home sell as quickly as possible, for as much as possible. As pet owners, we have an additional hoop to jump through in readying our homes for the selling process – finding a way to ensure our pets are safe, comfortable and not a hindrance to the perusing buyers during showings. So, what are a few quick tips to ensure your pet friendly home is ready for buyers? TIP #1 If you don’t have a separate dog run or fenced off part of the yard for your dog, consider kenneling your dog for the showing or if possible, taking them with you while buyers are looking at the home. No matter how friendly your baby Fido is with you, there are still strangers coming in and out of your home, which can be very stressful and unsettling for your dogs, creating the potential for a fear based reaction from them. Kenneling or putting your dogs in a dog run for showings also allows buyers the freedom to walk around your home without worrying about loose pets. Same rule applies to cats. Some cats run and hide from strangers coming into the home anyway, however if they are temporarily in a kennel then you won’t worry about them getting out of the home. This should provide you some relief knowing a buyer or agent won’t accidentally let your fur-babies out of the house or worse.

BY MARIE CRABB, GRI

TIP #2 Provide your agent/the company that schedules the showings with instructions regarding your pets. It’s always helpful to know if there are pets in a house, even if they are kenneled, so that we know what to expect when showing buyers. Some people are fearful of or allergic to pets, so if we are able to give buyers a heads up about pets in the home, it will make for a better experience. Additionally, if you are unable to kennel a kitty for showings, please note in the showing instructions whether or not the cat must stay inside or may go out. 8

TIP #3 If you’ve got cat litter boxes inside the home, try to scoop before showings. The last thing you want buyers walking into is a stinky house, which can be an immediate turn off for some buyers. So, try to scoop as often as you can, especially if you are getting a lot of showings. TIP #4 Steam clean your carpets and make sure your air filters are clean before listing your home for sale. Buyers that have pet allergy sensitivities will immediately notice pet odors and dander upon walking into a home, and this could very well be a reason for them to pass on your home. The fresher and cleaner your home presents, the better. Although this is certainly not an exhaustive list, these are certainly some important things you can do as a pet-owning seller to present your home in the best way possible. Happy selling! Marie Crabb is a San Antonio native and animal rescue advocate with 8 furkids of her own, plus numerous rescue fosters. She is a Realtor with Exquisite Properties, has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from St. Mary’s University and is a trained Mediator.

{askthetrainer} BY FRANK HAEGELAND 12

dogtraining does

O

come with a warranty?

ccasionally I have had people ask me whether we guarantee our training, and how long our warranty is. My response is usually something like “We do excellent work, and our pride and objective is to make you feel that having us train your dog was one of the best gifts you could ever have given to your furry best friend, this we absolutely guarantee.”

However, it sometimes seems that people who ask about a warranty often picture the trainer flipping some magical switch in their dog’s head that suddenly transforms their out of control, mouthy or perhaps even dangerous dog into a forever loving and obedient Lassie or Benji. Unfortunately, just like Harvard University is unable to warrant that you will forever remember everything they teach you in law school – especially if you choose to never practice law after graduation, we cannot warrant that your dog will forever remember everything we teach him or her because it depends on how well the owners follow through and practice obedience with the dog. What we can do, however, is to teach you – the dog’s family – how to keep practicing the training with your dog on a daily basis so neither you nor the dog will ever forget. Taking on the responsibility of owning a dog is very similar to taking on the responsibility of raising children. You’re stuck with the good and the bad of it for the duration of your dog’s life. Like children, dogs need to learn proper behavior for living in a human family and they need to be taught where the limits are. All this parental guidance and training needs to continue throughout the dog’s life. Just like children, dogs will test their parents and the established rules and limits every day: “I know I am not allowed to sleep on the furniture, but maybe I can sneak up in the sofa when no one is watching”,

“I know everyone gets upset if I chew on mommy’s shoes, but they smell and taste so good”. So if this lifelong guiding and parenting is the responsibility of the dog’s owners, then how can a professional trainer help? Well, first of all it is important to understand that there is much more to dog training than so called “Obedience Training”. For example, teaching a dog a list of commands such as sit, come, down and stay does not do much unless the dog is also taught that the humans of the family are in charge and that the dogs are not. Other crucial issues that tend to be ignored by most people, and quite frankly even by many professional trainers, are cases where the dog has developed phobias and other psychological complications that need treatment such as for example behavior modification training. It is also important to understand that in a household with one or more dogs, training is happening 100% of the time whether you like it or not; either you are training your dogs, or your dogs are training you. This is very similar to any household with children; either you are teaching and parenting your children – or they are training you when you allow them to get away with things they shouldn’t have. If your house rule is “no TV until the homework is done”, but the parents don’t enforce their own rules, then the children will learn that the rules don’t mean anything, and they will do what they feel like. Same thing with your dogs; if you tell your dog to sit, but when he doesn’t sit properly you tell him “oh, ok

&

d gs cats Texas

good enough”, then you just taught your dog that when you say “sit”, you don’t really mean it. What we at Pet Galaxy have found to be the best way our professional trainers can help you and your dog, can be summarized in the three bullet points below: 1. First treat or train your dog as required so that no matter the dog’s condition when he arrives, he will be fully trained in obedience plus even in the worst scenarios of psychological trauma – he will be well on his way to recovery. 2. Secondly train you, the dog’s parents and household members, in what to do and what not to do when you get the dog home. This training includes all foundational information so you can understand why certain things are more important than others, plus everything you need in order to keep your dog healthy and well trained going forward. 3. Third, the trainer will be available to answer questions and to help guide you and your family as you implement everything you and your dog have learned into your daily routine.

    

From there, however, it is up to you, the dog’s family, to take over and make sure you follow through and utilize everything you have learned. If you don’t – well then you just proved why we are unable to warrant that your dog will forever be wonderful after he or she graduates from our training. Frank Haegeland has trained dogs since he was 12 years old. He is currently the chief trainer at Pet Galaxy where he trains both dogs and their owners. Frank also treats dogs suffering from various psychological issues such as depressions, phobias, behavioral problems, etc. Frank never turns down trying to help a dog with behavioral issues, even dangerous dogs, so long as the causes are psychological in nature. Behavior problems stemming from medical issues such as a brain injury or hormone imbalances, are always referred to a veterinarian.

Happy Mother's Day! to some of SA's best Fur-Moms

W

e did a contest on Facebook in early April to see who are the best Fur mom(s) in San Antonio. Winning with the most likes were Barbara Maldonado and Monica Sauceda with their spoiled pooch Osito. However, we know all our readers are Paw-some fur moms and dads :-)

BY BARBARA MALDONADO

From the night we brought Osito home we knew we had a special little guy. He was playful, energetic, and loved to be around people. If they say each dog should have a purpose we had just discovered that his natural gift was to bring comfort and happiness to those he came in contact with. My partner and I then made it our purpose to bring as much or more comfort and happiness to Osito as he was giving us. We started off by dedicating a room in our home just for him. The room was to be a place where he could watch Dogtv, play with his box full of toys, or just relax in his own bed. Not sure when or how, but he then slowly took over our

ANNELIESE 14

living room, office, and even our bed. He also now takes over what we do on weekends, where we vacation, and even where we eat. It’s crazy how many great places we would have never discovered if we had not brought Osito along for the ride. He’s seen aliens and UFO’s in Roswell, been center court at a Silver Stars game, and has frequented a Starbucks from time to time for a cold puppaccino. These days our trips and plans are mainly to nursing homes and hospitals were Osito provides therapy. It’s great to see how such a small little dog can spread so much love and joy to those he meets. Here’s to many more years to come…

B

arkley the Labrador loves squirrels! One day, he snuck around his mom and ran out the front door. She watched as he ran joyously into the street, focused on the squirrel in the neighbor’s yard…and was hit by a car! Luckily the car was moving slowly and Barkley’s injuries weren’t life-threatening. When his mom got to him, however, she noticed that his rear leg was dangling at a very awkward angle. After a trip to the vet and then a consultation with a board-certified surgeon, Barkley’s rear leg fracture was diagnosed (Image 1) and surgically repaired (Image 2). Eight weeks later, he was back to normal!

Unfortunately, this is a more common scenario than many pet owners realize. Fractured bones can occur in a variety of situations – from a run-in with a car to a fall off of a deck. If you suspect that your pet has fractured a bone, a veterinarian should evaluate your pet and take radiographs (x-rays) as soon as IMAGE 1: PRE-OP possible. Fractures are considered an emergency situation, particularly if your pet is a puppy or kitten. Young animals tend to heal much more quickly than adults, and a fracture that has begun healing is much more difficult to repair than a fresh break. Every fracture is unique and requires individual evaluation to determine the best treatment. For the majority of cases, surgical intervention is required to ensure the patient’s recovery and return of function to the affected limb. Occasionally minor fractures can be set and casted without incident, as similarly done for people. Unfortunately, unlike humans, many times animals with fractures that are splinted can have complications such as a fracture that will not heal together or bandage sores from prolonged cast usage. When a fracture is repaired surgically, veterinary surgeons now have a wide variety of tools at their disposal. Many of the same companies that produce human orthopedic implants, such as plates, screws, pins, and wire, are also producing the highest quality veterinary

orthopedic implants. Minimally invasive fracture repair has now moved from human to veterinary medicine, and involves smaller incisions and less pain for patients post-operatively. This type of fracture repair attempts to leave the blood supply and soft tissues around the site of the trauma intact to accelerate healing and improve your pet’s long-term prognosis. Luckily, many pet IMAGE 2: POST-OP owners don’t ever have to deal with the trauma of a fracture. However, if your pet is ever faced with a broken bone, talk to your veterinarian about all of your options, and consider a consultation with a board-certified surgeon. Barkley’s mom did, and he has never felt better! Dr. Witsberger is boardcertif ied in small animal surgery. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois with a DVM in 2006. After graduation, Dr. Witsberger completed a small animal rotating internship at the University of Missouri. He then completed his surgical residency at Texas A&M University in 2010. Dr. Witsberger was a small animal surgery faculty member at Texas A&M for two years before he moved to San Antonio in 2012 to open Mission Veterinary Specialists.

P

et owners know what a pet medical emergency is. Whether it is a pet that is struck by a vehicle, attacked by a dog, bitten by a rattlesnake, accidentally given the wrong medication, or having seizures… all of these situations make people seek emergency care for their pets.

While an emergency is usually obvious, what you may not know is that veterinary emergency clinics provide urgent care services for pets too. Often seeking care early in the course of a disease or injury can prevent a lengthy hospitalization and can sometimes prevent the need to hospitalize at all. Here are some general guidelines about when urgent care is needed (and there are many more situations – when in doubt, visit the ER!): VOMITING Repeated vomiting can lead to dehydration. If your pet vomits more than 3 times in a 24 hour period, has both vomiting and diarrhea or becomes lethargic have your pet examined by a veterinarian. Please seek veterinary care immediately if large amounts of blood are present or if you see flaky, black appearing material resembling coffee grounds in the vomitus. STOOL Mild diarrhea alone may not need urgent veterinary care. You should seek veterinary care, however, if your pet’s stool is very watery, appears dark black or contains a large amount of red blood, or occurs much more frequently than his usual bowel movements. If your pet also becomes lethargic or the diarrhea lasts for more than 24 hours – seek veterinary care right away! ATTITUDE If your pet is extremely lethargic, you have difficulty waking your pet, or your pet seems extremely depressed or non-responsive, please seek veterinary care immediately. DEHYDRATION Signs of dehydration include dry, sticky mucous membranes (gums), depression, and skin tenting (skin stands up when you pull on it). Any dehydrated pet needs to be seen as soon as possible by a veterinarian.

20

PAIN There are many signs of pain. If your pet is painful and you do not have medication from your regular veterinarian to help alleviate his pain, please see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Signs of pain can include vocalizing, being reluctant to move, having a decreased appetite, changes in expression or movement patterns, and/or an unwillingness to move. No pet should have to suffer without relief. Please see a veterinarian right away! APPETITE A sudden change in your pet’s appetite can be an indicator of pain, disease or both. While any pet with an appetite change should be evaluated promptly by a veterinarian, cats should never go more than three days without eating. Cats that are not eating require immediate veterinary attention! Veterinary Emergency Clinics work as an extension of your regular veterinary clinic. Much as everyone would rather see their family veterinarian, these hard working doctors need time away from their busy clinics to rest and recharge so they can continue to provide your pet with stellar veterinary care. Rest assured that detailed records of your pet’s urgent care (or emergency) visit are always sent to your regular (aka primary care) veterinarian. ER veterinarians and primary care veterinarians are a team that together offer you the best care for your cherished family member! Dr. Riva Heron attended the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (’95) and is also a retired Naval Intelligence Officer. She has practiced Small Animal Medicine in Virginia, Minnesota and Florida and Emergency medicine in San Antonio at I-10 Pet Emergency. She is currently the Director of Medical Services for Mission Pet Emergency in San Antonio.

omes For Pets (Schertz Humane Society) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that is dedicated to educating the community about responsible and humane treatment of companion animals while working to rescue, foster, and find adoptive homes for unwanted and abused dogs and cats. We are a group of very friendly animal folks who would welcome the opportunity to meet and get to know more like minded people!

BY LISA CONNOLLY

Our largest fundraiser is the Doggie Dash, a 5 K Walk/Run held each May. We can use any and all 2 legged assistance for our 4 legged furry friends that day! The 14th Annual Doggie Dash 5 K Run/ Walk is May 16, 2015, at Pickrell Park in Schertz. There is a Superhero theme this year, since after all, aren't all dogs our super heroes? Feel free to run with this idea (pun intended) and wear your fav superhero cape, shirt, mask - match your furry friend. (Keeping in mind that you both are running or walking a 5 K. :)) This fun family event begins at 8:00 am, and you can walk or run with your dog, or with no canine companion at all. Teams welcome! There are vendor and food booths, a bake sale, lively DJ music. For the first time, we are having an After Party! From 5-8 pm, that evening, at the Bluebonnet Palace in Selma, we will have food, a silent auction, and more enjoyable music (After the humane society party, the popular 80's band Spazmat22

ics will be playing at the Bluebonnet, and they are amazing all by themselves!) All proceeds benefit homeless, abused and neglected animals. More info at our site: homesforpets.org We would love to see you there! Our volunteers change, because of life changing situations (military family moves, and so on), so we are always in need of good responsible animal lovers who like to work with dogs, cats, with web sites, helping foster parents or the public with their pets, or in an office environment. There are endless opportunities, weekdays, weekends, day and night! We hold adoption days on varying weekends at the Forum Petsmart, the New Braunfels Petsmart, Petco near Ingram, Petco Unleashed on Nacogdoches, and at Raising Cane's in Schertz the first Saturday of each month. Don't forget to check out our home page (www. homesforpets.org) on May 5, 2015 if you would like to donate to our group. If you donate through the Big Give SA fund, they will match your donation to us on May 5 online only!

S

o summer is just around the corner, you are starting to feel it, that itch. Call it what you want, senioritis, stir crazy, death by cubicle, rainy day blues. This is a short list of the millions of names people give the stress caused by being locked indoors.

BY DR. COURTNEY H. BRIDGEMAN, CHIEF VETERINARIAN, SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY

But humans are not the only ones who suffer from this disorder. Compulsion behaviors and mental deterioration caused by looking at the same four walls day in and day out can affect our four-legged friends as well. And while our buddies living in a shelter are the most at risk, those living in your home can be just as affected without the proper care. Take a look at the symptoms and breeds below to see if your pet might be due for some R and R out in the open skies and what you can do to help. 1. Breed predilection. While all dogs, all animals for that matter, can suffer from anxiety caused by confinement the ones that are notorious for high energy and high intelligence are the ones that suffer most. Breeds like the Border Collie, Jack Russell Terrier, and Heelers are predisposed to turning the internal engines up and burning out the pilot if given little outlet to burn off the heat. These breeds need not only space to run and exercise to keep them fit, but mental stimulation like a good thinking job to keep their mind from stressing and turning normal behaviors into pathologic ones. This isn’t saying that your border collie is going to turn into a serial killer, but it may be that your once loving and easy going dog develops obsessive compulsive behaviors as seen below. 2. Energy demands set to low. Dogs that are chronically underexposed to the outside world are most prone to this disorder. True, shelter dogs fall victim

even in the best of circumstances if they are in the category above just based on the nature of the beast (both shelter and dog breed), given enough time, a dog with a breed predilection and in a shelter will begin to show symptoms of the stress. Some sooner than others. But a dog that lives in a home environment can succumb as well. Dogs that never see the end of the leash for more than the 2 seconds it takes to go potty. Or dogs whose sole view of the outside world is through the slats in their privacy fence are those most at risk. Mental exercise and acuity is more than just doing some math or reading a good book, its working out problems and taking in new stimuli and interpreting it. Dogs that never have the opportunity to do that begin to take in stimuli that may be otherwise dismissed and dwell on it. Unhealthy behaviors can result. 3. Miscellaneous stressful events. Whether it’s a new baby, a new job, a new house, or a new pet. Perhaps there is discord in the home between people or even between the other pets. Maybe the home is near a fire station, police station, or a noisy bar. Maybe a new cat moved in the neighborhood. Most of these things may be somewhat stressful or uneventful to us, but our pets notice. And sometimes they notice with overly serious reactions. If your pet suddenly begins acting peculiar in what looks like out of the blue, take a look at this list and see if there are any

potential stressors on board you may have overlooked. BEHAVIORS THAT MIGHT SHOW YOUR DOG IS ON THE LIST OF ANXIETY SUFFERERS: 1. Inappropriate licking/biting/ chewing of himself or objects 2. Sudden inappropriate signs of fear/aggression 3. Seemingly repetitive compulsive behaviors like circling, jumping on and off or up and down, licking, air snapping, etc. 4. Missing hair or random injuries to his body not caused by trauma or contagion 5. Excessive focus on a task including escape to the point of bodily injury So if your pet meets one or more of the categories above and is suspect for performing any of the behaviors in list two, it may be time to intervene. Dogs, and cats to a lesser degree, rely on us to enrich them. For most dogs, simply living in the free moments that people have between work and sleep is not enough. They need quality time and behavior enrichment. This proves to be a great motivator to get people outdoors and enjoying nature or on the treadmill! (Yes, dogs can be taught to run on a treadmill, please speak with your veterinarian or local behaviorist for tips and to find out if your pet is healthy enough for this activity) What can you do to help? 1. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise. They crave it. They NEED it. At least 30 minutes a day, and preferably more if you can make it happen. A jog. A leash walk. Outside the confines of the backyard, not just tossing the ball around, although that might do in a pinch. 2. Mental games. Find it. Leave it. Obedience commands and {May 2015}

games. Agility games. Herding the pigeons. Whatever tasks you and your dog can find to enjoy, do it. And do it frequently. Learn a new game. Go hiking. Enter a competition. Give your dog a JOB. Something to make him feel accomplished. 3. Love. At the end of all that activity and mental support, praise him. Love him. And make him as much a part of the family as you can. This doesn’t mean all dogs have to belong inside by the fire. Some are just as happy living outside in the sunshine and under the stars, but it does mean they spend time with their people. They spend good time with their people. Let them know that just because they completed the task they won the Nobel Prize of the doggie world. For that moment, they are the king or queen. And if your pet gets all these things and is happy and healthy, then remember, there are shelter dogs near you that live behind 4 brightly colored yet familiar walls who would love to have some R and R today under the big sky. Walk a shelter dog today!

Q: I have a Corgi and we keep him short for the summer months. I worry about him getting sunburned. Is there anything I can put on him when he is outside to help prevent him from getting burned? Or if I notice him getting red, is there anything to apply? —Thank You, John A: Many of my clients shave their pups with no issues, be aware that some dog’s coats will not grow back or it grows back rough or a different color. Just be careful how much sun your dog is exposed to, avoiding the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when radiation levels are the highest. There are pet sunscreens on the market; I can’t speak to the effectiveness of them. Some people do put infant safe sunscreens on areas that have little to no hair such as the belly, armpits and noses.l.

A: Many cats that seem to “over” groom with excessive licking, etc., tend to lick more on their sides or abdomen. Causes include: • Allergy to food, fleas or airborne pollen • Psychogenic alopecia • Metabolic causes An appointment with your veterinarian for an examination, bloodwork and possible skin scraping will give the best diagnosis and treatment options.
