Q: We live in the back of a greenbelt and sometimes my dogs come back with ticks. What is the safest way to remove them?
A: When dogs start to run into things, are easily startled or act disoriented, they may be suffering from loss of vision. There is a test that is used to detect retina function called an Electroretinogram (ERG). The test is performed by a veterinary ophthalmologist specialist. A visit to your veterinarian for a thorough physical exam may help determine if there is an underlying cause and/or extent of vision loss. here isn’t much that pulls at my heartstrings more than reunion videos. From military homecomings to long-lost loved ones, there’s something about the sudden look of familiarity and the overwhelming pressure of forgotten joy sudden and visible on a person’s face that evokes an overflow of sniffles and watery eyes.
BY VERONICA PEREZ, COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATE, SAHS
This feeling goes doubly so for the reunion of lost pets, but with the overwhelming number of stray and homeless dogs and cats wandering the streets of San Antonio, it’s possible many LOST and FOUND pets in our community will never get a reunion with their anxious pet owners. The San Antonio Humane Society encourages cat and dog owners to exercise responsible pet ownership practices to keep your pets safe! COLLARS & ID TAGS External ID tags are your pet’s first defense if they ever become lost and, in the city of San Antonio, dogs MUST wear a tag with a registered microchip number at all times while outdoors. Anyone can see and read an ID tag! Microchips, your pet’s second line of defense, will only help identification once your pet is at a shelter or vet clinic where they can be scanned for the chip. ID tags will help neighbors and Good Samaritans easily identify a lost dog or cat and a phone number where you can be reached. This is true for both indoor and outdoor pets! Accidents and disasters can happen anytime: whether it’s a broken gate, open front door, or inclement weather. Sure, some pets may not be too fond of their collars (especially cats). Your best option is to start them young! Make sure collars are fitted properly, and your pets should get used to them in a few days or weeks. If your problem is breakaway collars (cats), do your research and opt for a stretch collar instead.
MICROCHIPPING If your pet ever becomes lost, their chance of returning to you safely increases exponentially if they have a registered microchip. In fact, in the city of San Antonio, a registered microchip is the primary means of pet identification within city limits. This city ordinance replaced the city’s previous annual licensing program in 2015. Does it hurt? Fear not pet parents! Microchip implantation is as painless as the vaccines your pets receive annually. The biggest difference? Your pet will only have to receive his microchip once, and all you’ll have to do is make sure it’s registered and updated with your current address and phone number. Although they have their own set of strengths, collars and ID tags can become snagged on plant limbs, fence posts, or removed physically by pet thieves. Microchips may be your pet’s only unseen hope of reuniting with you if this sort of tragedy strikes. There’s nothing quite as sweet as watching a long lost pup jumping into the arms of their pet parent or a missing cat purring and chirping at first sight of their food providers. But I also recognize a few less reunion videos means a few more pets safe and sound in their forever homes where they belong. The San Antonio Humane Society microchips all shelter animals and offers microchipping to the public onsite at wellness clinics or on a walk-in basis and at certain events for $25. s your dog or cat drinking water excessively or urinating more frequently? These could be early signs of diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is an accumulation of glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream due to lack of or resistance to a hormone called insulin. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas and is necessary for the body to utilize the glucose from the foods we ingest. In the absence of insulin the glucose in the bloodstream accumulates but cannot go inside the cells where it is needed to be used as energy for the body. In this state, the body feels like it is “starving” even if the pet is still eating.
BY: AHMIRA TORRES, DVM, DACVIM (INTERNAL MEDICINE)
When left untreated, diabetes mellitus can cause weight loss, dehydration, weakness, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, electrolyte imbalances and in severe cases eventually death. Dogs and cats can develop diabetes mellitus. To diagnose this condition, your veterinarian will perform blood work to determine the blood glucose concentration as well as other electrolyte abnormalities. A urine analysis could also be performed to evaluate for glucose in the urine. Increased blood glucose and glucose in the urine are the hallmarks of diabetes mellitus. Once the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus has been made, depending on the condition of the pet (i.e. are they eating, with normal electrolytes versus sick and dehydrated) treatment with insulin can be started. In severe cases the pet might need to be hospitalized to receive intravenous fluids and other supportive care until able to go home. Insulin is administered by injections under the skin once or twice a day. Once a pet is started on insulin supplementation they will require monitoring of blood glucoses at home or with your veterinarian. One of the risks of insulin supplementation is causing low blood glucose. Signs of low blood glucose include, disorientation, lethargy, stumbling and in some cases seizures. If 14
you suspect your pet’s blood sugar to be low try to feed them and take them to your nearest veterinary clinic immediately. Most pets with diabetes can have a normal life as long as they continue to receive insulin supplementation and regular checkups. During these check-ups your veterinarian will monitor the pet’s weight and make sure the dose of insulin is adequate. Prepare your House: Shut all doors and windows and draw curtains to block flashes and reduce noise levels. But, keep the lights on so your dog won’t be scared in a dark room. Drown the noise out: Play music, vacuum, turn on a fan or something that emits white noise to minimize the sounds from outside. Create a ‘Safe Place’: Choose an inner room that is least impacted by outside noise. Make it cozy with familiar bedding somewhere pleasant under a table or behind a chair. Allow the dog to hide when they’re scared and give them a special treat or a toy to divert their attention from the noise. Lavender scented items can be calming too. Prepare: Make sure dog tags are up to date in case he flees. Give your dog plenty of exercise earlier in the day. Place them in their ‘Safe Place’ ½ an hour to an hour before the fireworks start.
