LEGEND KIA /MAZDA'S RESCUE Rescue Effort and Service Charity Unity Event on July 17th, 11am-4pm
Legend KIA/Mazda Joins Hands With Local Animal Rescue and Service Efforts. General Manager Mike Trivigno to Host Charity Cook Out Open to the Public What more can we achieve as a collective for the lives of our pets both owned and orphaned? Rescue Shelters seek out loving families for our stray communities; various clinics and specialty programs provide medical and sterilization services; talented groups and individuals specialize in training service animals for the purpose of enriching our lives. Those who provide our community with these services deserve much more credit and recognition. Mike Trivigno, General Manager of Legend Mazda KIA, has initiated a new program: Legend KIA/Mazda's RESCUE (Rescue andLogo Service HorizontalEfforts Kia Motors 4/C Charity - Large Union Event). The event will be an indoor/outdoor charity cook out and adoption event on Sunday July 17 from 11AM to 4PM. Bexar, Mike Trivigno's rescue bulldog as seen on the Legend KIA commercials, will be there as well as a multitude of rescue and service organizations. All peoples and pets are invited to arrive at 11AM and to stay through for the event's conclusion at 4PM. All guests are encouraged to bring their families and friends as we celebrate participating organizations. There will be door prizes, live music, comfortable seating, hamburgers and hot dogs, and entertainment. The Legend KIA/Mazda's RESCUE aims to promulgate the importance of utilizing and empowering local animal rescue and service organizations. This is an invaluable opportunity for professional networking, public awareness, and for animals to find the homes and treatment they need. We ask that all people take advantage of the festivities. Your attendance would exponentially benefit our local four-legged population.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Whoa! This issue is our 4th annual salute to Texas’s other important petthe horse. In addition to the “Horsing Around San Antonio” pictorial, we present a Texas A&M article about horses and thunderstorms. Due to our very rainy Spring, this is a very timely article. Our spotlight this year is the Bexar County 4-H Club. It’s also time to bring the heat, as it’s July in S.A.! We feature expert advice on how your pets can handle this temperature challenge. Dr. James Peterson dispenses tips on how your pet can overcome heat related problems. Dr. Teresa Sanders, the new Chief Veterinarian of the San Antonio Humane Society, discusses the impact of fleas, ticks and mosquitos on your furry children. During these trying temperature times, July also means fireworks, so Marlene Ring, owner of Pawsitive Solutions, writes about calming your pets during stressful celebrations. Hope you and your pet enjoy a happy & safe 4th! Sincerely,
Dana Raimondi Tell our advertisers you heard about them in Texas Dogs & CatsSan Antonio! apply gentle, constant pressure that has a dramatic calming effect. Stay Calm: Your dog will pick up on any odd behavior. Finally, for extreme cases of phobia, contact your vet to discuss a prescription medication. Prepare your House: Shut all doors and windows and draw curtains to block flashes and reduce noise levels. But, keep the lights on so your dog won’t be scared in a dark room. Drown the noise out: Play music, vacuum, turn on a fan or something that emits white noise to minimize the sounds from outside. Create a ‘Safe Place’: Choose an inner room that is least impacted by outside noise. Make it cozy with familiar bedding somewhere pleasant under a table or behind a chair. Allow the dog to hide when they’re scared and give them a special treat or a toy to divert their attention from the noise. Lavender scented items can be calming too. Prepare: Make sure dog tags are up to date in case he flees. Give your dog plenty of exercise earlier in the day. Place them in their ‘Safe Place’ ½ an hour to an hour before the fireworks start. Purchase a “Thunder Shirt” ahead of time. These garments

More than 1000 years before Alexander the Great conquered most of the known world, Lusitano horses were carrying soldiers into the great battles of Europe. The movements coveted by mounted soldiers ENCANTO for centuries still live on in modern dressage and the Lusitanos of today. Since the 1800’s, the Lusitano breed has existed to produce mounts for the premier bullfighters of Portugal, Spain and Mexico. The bravery, brilliance, amazing temperament and athletic ability of this breed is highly desired by modern day riders in various equestrian sports, especially dressage. If you want to see a piece of this living equesXUSTO trian history, take a 40-minute drive northwest of San Antonio into the beautiful Texas Hill Country. There you will find, on 600 acres of scenic ranch land, RCS Stables and its purebred Lusitano horses. RCS Iberian Sport Horses located in Boerne, Texas houses up to 16 Lusitanos. The strict requirements of the Portuguese registry
maintain the purity of these Lusitanos that evolved from the lines of Manuel Veiga. The Veiga line is one of 4 recognized pure Lusitano bloodlines. The Veiga facility, still in active operation, is located in Quinta da Broa, Ribatejo Portugal. They have been breeding these pure lines for more than 180 years. The horses at RCS Stables are bred at Yeguada Picachos in Northern Mexico. Specially selected stallions and geldings are imported to the United States where they are trained and offered for sale. Head trainer Ashley Hammill, a USDF Certified Trainer and Parelli expert Juan Gonzales of Costa Rica work with these horses in all levels of training making them ready to be presented to the U.S. market. S
ummertime! Finally, your chance to relax and unwind! With your sunblock, sunglasses and a good book, you plan to enjoy the day at the pool! Suddenly, you remember your dog is in the yard – unsupervised …surely he will be okay for a couple hours. Or will he?
Summer temperatures might be great for tan lines and boating trips, but the excessive heat and increased outdoor activities could spell disaster for your pets. As the mercury rises, take just a few moments to insure that your pets are safe and prevent an urgent trip to the animal ER with a summertime emergency! The most common heat related problem for pets is heat stroke. Also known as heat stress or hyperpyrexia, heat stroke is a real emergency for dogs. Even on moderately warm days, an excited dog might show a body temperature increase of 2-5 degrees Fahrenheit. Since dogs don’t sweat like we do, they are unable to dissipate the excess heat and heat stroke may soon follow. Any outdoor pet can overheat on a warm summer day, but short faced breeds, such as Pugs and Bulldogs, are at a higher risk. In addition, every year thousands of pets succumb to heat stroke because they were left in cars while their owners ran “just a few” errands. When the sun goes down and the temperatures start to cool, your pets still face many summer challenges. The patriotic holidays during the summer months are often preceded by and celebrated with fireworks. The bright flashes and loud bangs are terrifying to some pets and can cause anxiety, stress and even escape. It is possible to enjoy the summer with your pets by taking just a few precautions. First and foremost, always be aware of the weather forecast. Knowing the high temperature can help guide your plans for the day. Don’t leave your pet unattended outside or plan
heavy exercise on hot, humid days. If your pet is left outdoors, he must have access to adequate shade and fresh water. When it’s time to run errands, leave your pet at home. Even a few minutes in a hot car is enough to increase your pet’s body temperature dramatically. If you find your pet disoriented, panting excessively or collapsed in the yard, move him immediately to a cooler environment. Use cool wet towels over his back, armpits and groin to help bring his temperature down. Fans are often helpful too. DO NOT USE ICE! Then, get him to your veterinarian immediately so that they can assess his status and begin life saving treatments. Summertime should be a time for relaxation and fun…don’t let a pet emergency spoil your good time. To learn more, visit www.missionpetemergency.com www.thepalmspetresort.com. Patellar luxation occurs when the patella (knee cap) luxates (dislocates) out of its position in the femoral groove. Patellar luxations are most typically seen in small breeds like Yorkies, Malteses, Chihuahuas, and Pomeranians, but can be diagnosed in any breed of dog or even cat.

M
y name is Dan Greenhouse. I am a husband, father, grandfather of 2, and a devoted fur daddy. I am also in need of a type O kidney. Every day, I am genuinely grateful for my time I have with family and friends. Unfortunately, my kidneys are failing me and I will need to start dialysis very shortly. The statistics on the length of survival for dialysis patients are sadly quite bleak. My only real hope to watch my grandchildren grow, is to receive a kidney transplant.
WHY A LIVING DONOR? Several reasons: The wait for a cadaver kidney in San Antonio is 8-10 years. ( I sadly don’t have that much time to wait) - Dialysis is less than half as effective as a replacement kidney. I will spend 3-4 days a week at the dialysis center to remove waste and fluids from my body and require meds to boost my red blood cells, iron, etc., that a kidney would typically make. - The transplant of a cadaver kidney is unplanned and on an emergency basis. A living donor makes a
kidney available and allows for a planned transplant. The kidney has been tested, is known to the transplant team and is usually healthier. - A kidney donated by a living donor is twice as effective as one harvested from a cadaver. Most people have two kidneys. One kidney will sustain a healthy person. I am looking for someone who will share their spare kidney with me. If you are willing to help, I would love to find out if you would be a good donor. You can contact Lauren at (210) 575-8484. She is a Transplant Nurse Coordinator at Methodist Transplant Specialty Hospital. She can answer any questions you have about the process and do a preliminary screening for anyone potentially interested. Please make sure to mention you are calling about Dan Greenhouse. Please also view my Facebook page Kidney for Dan. Any shares are very much appreciated as there may be a family member or friend that is looking to become a hero.
IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING DONATING TO DAN GREENHOUSE, CONTACT LAUREN AT 210-575-8484. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO MENTION DAN'S NAME. YOU CAN ALSO VISIT HIS FACEBOOK PAGE AT KIDNEY FOR DAN.

ummer is under way, and as per usual, when the weather gets warm, the bugs start flourishing. The most common pests in our area and on our pets are fleas, ticks, and mosquitos. For many of us in the veterinary profession who deal with these creepy crawlies every day, just the thought or sight of fleas and ticks on your (or our) pets provokes a bad case of the “itchies”. In light of the summer season, I thought I’d pass on some interesting info “bites” about the life cycles of these creepy crawlies. This will give you something to chew on while the bugs are chewing on you and your pet this season.

FLEAS Fleas are everywhere: in bushes and grass, on your dog or cat, and in your carpet or furniture. The cat flea is the most common species we find on our pets. Fleas have four life stages: egg, larvae, pupa, and adult. An adult female flea lays up to 40 eggs daily. These eggs are laid on the host and eventually fall off into the environment where they hatch. Our humid South Texas weather is an unfortunately supportive environment for incubating flea eggs. And a wet spring season has exacerbated the problem! Over half of any live fleas in the environment or your home are in the larval stage. Since larvae are vulnerable and can die at a temperature of 95 degrees, larvae protect themselves by residing in the shady areas of your yard or the air-conditioned rooms of your home. By the time they reach the pupal stage, most young fleas have died off from environmental extremes. Only a very strong and extremely hardy percentage make it to this stage. As fleas develop, they lie in wait for just the right time to emerge. This can take as long as one year! When the pupa feels the time is just right (e.g. when it feels the vibrations of an approaching victim) they burst out famished and desperate for their first meal. When blood is first drawn from the host, it produces permanent metabolic changes in the flea. This “fed flea” will die shortly if separated or deprived of 28
vital host blood. The adult female flea starts to produce eggs almost immediately after her first feeding, and lays continuously until her death three weeks later. Let’s see: 40 eggs a day for 21 days—that’s almost 900 eggs! TICKS Ticks thrive on their host’s warm body temperature, motion, vibration, and carbon dioxide: characteristics shared by all mammals (including us). Tick bites are not painful but can transmit diseases, including zoonotic diseases. Vigilance with tick removal is key, as ticks need to be attached to their host for several hours for diseases to be transmitted. Most tick species require at least 3 hosts during their lifespan of 2 years, and need a blood meal from each host to progress to the next stage. Hard ticks, the most common ticks found on dogs and cats, have four life stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. This is similar to the flea life cycle. Female hard ticks feed once, lays one large batch of eggs, and expire. Depending upon temperature, humidity and other environmental factors, eggs hatch in a few weeks to several months. The larvae stage, sometimes called "seed ticks," have only six legs, and it is almost impossible to tell a male from a female. Attaching to a host is extremely difficult at this stage, and frequently results in hungry larva. A very high percentage of larvae will die. Desper-

evere weather can be a troubling event, especially when there are animals whose welfare and comfort is of concern as well. Small pets can usually take cover with their owners, but what precautions can an owner take for larger animals such as horses?
"The first step in protecting your horses and other livestock from severe weather is to realize what the severe weather risks are in your area," says Dr. Brandon Dominguez, clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM)& Biomedical Sciences and member of the CVM Veterinary Emergency Team. "For many areas, springtime brings threats of severe thunderstorms, lightning, flash floods, and tornadoes." Often owners like to keep horses stalled in a barn to protect them from lightning during a storm, but giving them the ability to travel could keep them safer. "Generally, if horses are in a pasture with trees or near a lightning rod, the risk of the horse being struck is greatly diminished. A three-sided shelter can help to keep them warm and dry during a storm in addition to shielding them from lightning strikes," says Dominguez. Dominguez believes that when storms become more severe, to possibly include tornadoes or high gusts of winds, horses are even safer outside of their stalls. "It is wise to keep barnyards and pastures clear of debris before storms are due to strike. If a tornado were to hit a barn with horses secured in stalls, the likelihood and severity of being hit by debris would be considerably increased," says Dominguez. True, horses in pasture may not escape completely unscathed, but the cuts and contusions are usually less significant. With torrential rainfall, flooding, and particularly
flash flooding, if horses are given the opportunity to move to higher ground away from danger, they will follow their natural instinct for survival. Flash flooding, if injury or obstacles prevent horses from escaping, can lead to a horse being swept downstream and potentially drowning. "Less harsh, but just as serious, are the consequences of standing in perpetually flooded pastures. The chronic exposure to moisture could lead to softening of the hoof and sole leaving a horse susceptible to stone bruises, sole abscesses, white line disease, and infection such as thrush," says Dominguez. Dominguez explains that rapid drying may cause hooves to crack and become brittle, but keeping feet cleaned and picked out and applying hoof conditioners will help minimize the harm from flood waters. Additionally, flooding may cause toxins to spread from storage areas to pastures where horses are gathered exposing them to contaminants that they would not ordinarily contact. "The most ideal confinement during severe weather would be a large pasture with a three-sided shelter to protect animals from the elements, but that also allows them to escape from danger. Not being in the lowest portion of the field, but in the vicinity of trees or a lightning rod is also advantageous," says Dominguez. With the variety of horse-owners, horse-properties, and horses, planning before severe weather occurs should take into consideration the ability to keep everybody safe.

Q: In this summer heat, how long is it safe to allow my dog (Lab mix) to be outside in the backyard during the day?
A: It always varies with the amount of shade available, age, breed of dog, weight of dog and water available. It is common sense, but people would be surprised at how easily a heatstroke occurs. Any temperature above 80 degrees is questionable and all animals should be monitored and not out longer than 30 minutes. (That can be shorter if aged dog, puppy or dog in poor health).

Q: My 3 year old Poodle scratches himself a lot. How can I tell if it is a skin issue or possibly a flea issue?
A: It is easy to differentiate between flea allergies and other types of allergies just by the fact that fleas are seen on your dog, even one can cause serious itching and inflammation of the skin. There are allergies to fleas, food and airbourne pollens. This year there appears to be more fleas than usual. Your veterinarian can go over flea control to include control in your house, on your pet, and in your yard. If your allergy testing your pet, you will be testing for a multitude of allergens to include fleas.
