LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER This is our 4th annual June wedding spectacular issue! In terms of popularity, this issue is one of our most anticipated magazines of the year. Who among us doesn’t love the romance of a wedding, especially when our beloved furry children are involved in the ceremony? According to many wedding planners, more of us are involving our pets in the big day more than ever before. Our featured brides and grooms can attest to this growing popular trend. The new San Antonio Humane Society Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Sanders, expounds on this topic in her first article for us. Frank Haegeland, of Pet Galaxy, explains pet etiquette for dogs in weddings. Other topics this month include, treating dental fractures by Dr. M.J. Redman of Mission Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Riva Heron, of Mission Pet Emergency, provides us with basic emergency guidelines for your pets. Here’s hoping that you and your pet enjoy this lovely June wedding season! Sincerely,
Dana Raimondi Tell our advertisers you heard about them in Texas Dogs & CatsSan Antonio! FEATURED DOGGIE
about our
covermodels LUDO
BY OWNERS; KELLI COFFEY (DAX) & CARRIE KING (LUDO)
Ludo was adopted from Austin Pets Alive! last year after he was found wandering as a stray. He is now three years old, enjoys nothing in life more than a tennis ball (except maybe a frisbee), and spends his days riding along all over the city with his owner/mom - demonstrating off leash obedience and just generally clowning around. As a progressive Labrador-Staffordshire Terrier mix, Ludo didn't mind wearing the bridal outfit; rather he says it made him feel pretty and why not dress up for a good cause? Dax was also adopted from Austin Pets Alive! when he was just a tiny puppy. His photo on their website was just his litter of puppies in a bucket which clearly sparked Kelli’s interest to go see them at the shelter. Kelli is not sure exactly what his mix is but he obviously has Golden
DAX
Retriever in there somewhere. As he grew up, she realized that he was going to be much bigger than they anticipated and his energy level was higher than they were used to with their previous dogs. Luckily with working for Sit Means Sit, Kelli is able to take Dax to work with her every day and his energy is always wonderful to have around the other dogs that are there for training. Dax is always making Kelli laugh with his goofy personality and clumsiness. He is so easy going and loves to play with other dogs and meet new people. His favorite game is fetch and he will run and play forever if his owners would keep throwing the ball for him. Dax is always eager to please and never seems to have a bad day. He came into Kelli’s life at the perfect time and shes so happy she decided to go down to the shelter to check out the puppies in the bucket!
The Photo shoot took place at Gary Pools headquarters. Gary Pools has been building swimming pools in and around San Antonio and South Texas since 1954. We are one of the largest family owned and operated pool builders in Central and South Texas. From residential and community pools, to pools and water features for hotels and commercial water parks, Gary Pools has earned a reputation for providing an enviable investment that will bring you pleasure for years to come. Under Leif Zars’ management, Gary Pools has built thousands of residential pools in Texas, and is the number one builder of pools for communities, institutions, hotels and motels throughout the state. Leif Zars continues to boldly lead Gary Pools and the pool industry into the future with innovations and improvements in pool design and safety. Gary Pools also continues to rank as one of the country’s foremost innovators in the highly specialized pool design and construction field. He pioneered a monolithic wall to-wall cantilever structure to solve problems created by Texas’ expansive soil, and was responsible for developing a low-energy consumption swimming pool. – Gabe Medina

A Furry Wedding Story Justin & Cheri Booth with Pudgy
J
Justin & Cheri Booth tied the knot on August 6th, 2015 in downtown San Antonio at the courthouse (after months of debating, they decided to elope!) Justin needed a best man and felt his beloved Pug Pudgy was his most fitting option. Justin answered questions about his big day in the following manner: Q1: Why did you choose to have your dog a part of your wedding day? A: Our wonderful little Pug is part of our family, so it only made sense to us that he be a part of our special day. Also, with my breathtaking wife and the Ryan Reynolds of the dog world, I had to try a little harder to not look quite so out of my league! We want him to be a part of our memories for as long as we are blessed to have him in our lives. I also needed a best-man, and nothing says “classy” like a pug in a tux. Q2: How accommodating was everyone in letting your dog be a part of your wedding and did you get resistance from anyone? A: Everyone was extremely supportive! Naturally, his profound cuteness and goofy demeanor has the ability to quickly erode any feelings of negativity towards him, and it’s an unofficial societal standard that Pugs are exempt from any dog-barring rules. After all, who can look at a Pug face and stay mad? {June 2016}
Q3: What advice would you offer any future couples thinking of having their pets in their wedding? A: A pet is part of the family, so don’t ever be afraid to try and make accommodations to get your pets involved. It is only natural to love your creatures as much as any member of your family, and most people understand this and feel the same way. Personally, if someone were giving me a hard time about trying to involve my pet on such a monumental day, I wouldn’t do business with them. Q4: What was the best part of having your dog be a part of your wedding? A: Knowing that we will always have this memory of him is priceless. There will come a day when he can’t do all the things he was once capable of, that’s just the way life is, and I will just be grateful that we included him in as many things as we could and made his life as rich as possible. You can never take the memories away, so, in that sense, he will live forever. 13 PHOTOGRAPHER: COURTNEY BOOTH

thencomesthepets! I t’s wedding season! And with new beginnings comes new experiences for both new and old pets. These experiences can be both frightening and exciting for couples and pets alike. Let’s cover some basic scenarios I’ve doled veterinary advice out on over the years to young couples just starting out.
BY DR.TERESA SANDERS , BS, DVM
MR & MRS TINY TIM & MISS VICKI
Q: We’re concerned about our pets getting along once we all begin sharing a house full time.
only the human/animal bond, but human/human/animal bond as well!
A: There are several different methods to help with this situation. Pheromone products for dogs and cats, such as Feliway® or Comfort Zone®, can be very helpful during introductions to a new pet, a new home, or a new baby. There are different forms of these products (diffusers, collars, sprays) and they can be used together, in addition to training methods, as needed to help create calm and relieve stress or stress-related behaviors (marking, scratching, etc.). Ideally, these products work best when placed prior to the stressful event, sometimes 1-2 weeks prior, in order to ensure effectiveness. Another thing to keep in mind is that a gradual introduction of any new pets into any situation is often recommended and has the greatest chance of success. Taking family-pets-to-be to a training class together may help strengthen not
Q: We adopted a pet over the summer, but we’re returning back to work/school regularly/ full-time now and are worried about how our pet will react to our sudden “disappearance.” A: First, kudos to you for being proactive about spending time with your new puppy in those first few critical months of socialization! Just like any young member of your new family (fuzzy or not), routines can be a very important tool when making delicate transitions. Separation anxiety is probably the most common side effect observed in canines that aren’t adjusting to changes in their human’s schedule. Anxiety can manifest in many ways, such as destructive chewing, excessive barking, or urinating and/ or defecating in unusual places. As with any new transition, I recommend using a pheromone product,

1-2 weeks prior to the transition day (e.g. first day on the job). I would also recommend gradually “weaning” your pet from you. If your pooch is used to spending all day, every day with you, it’s no wonder why they might become stressed if you’re suddenly gone for 8 to 10 hours at a time. Crate training is an easy way to potty-train your new puppy, but it can also provide a sense of security to your pet while you’re gone. Gradually leaving the house for longer time periods until you’re sure your puppy can hold his bladder—and anxiety—in check will help you and your partner reach success. Depending on life stage and activity level, having an exercise routine (walking, running, ball-throwing) can be a great anxiety reliever and activity reducer, encouraging a calmer mind-set after you’ve left home. However, do note that puppies have small bladders and may not be able to hold them for a very long time. The bladder is a muscle and has to be strengthened gradually and consistently. You may need to stick to 3-4 hours at a time until your puppy is ready. Many behaviors of separation-anxiety are triggered as soon as a sound, such as jingling keys, is heard. A consistent routine will put your pet’s mind at ease and tell them that while these sounds signify that you’ll be gone, they are also reassurance that you’ll be back.
Pregnant individuals are at greater risk for becoming sick if they are exposed to this parasite because their immune system is “functioning for two”, and thus a little more susceptible than normal. Non-pregnant persons with normal immune systems may not be aware that they have been exposed to this parasite. Most pregnant women rejoice when I tell them that their non-pregnant life partner is going to have exclusive litter box duty for the next 9 months! In all seriousness, here are some tips from the CDC’s website to prevent contracting Toxoplasmosis, especially if you’re pregnant or plan to become pregnant:
Q: I am pregnant, and I have heard that cats can carry a disease that is dangerous to my fetus. Should I get rid of my cat?
Remember, your veterinarian is a great source of information and support through any drastic transitions. New beginnings of any kind can be full of wonder and excitement, but they can also create stress in the humans and animals involved. Having a long-term and supportive relationship within your new family and with your primary care veterinarian is an important part of keeping your pet healthy.
A: The disease you’re concerned about is called Toxoplasmosis. This disease is caused by a single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. This single-celled organism can be present in fresh cat feces, undercooked or raw meat (especially pork, lamb, and venison), gardening soil contaminated from outdoor/stray cat’s feces, knives/ cutting boards/utensils that have come into contact with contaminated, raw meats, and contaminated drinking water. The Center for Disease Control recommends fully cooking all meat to appropriate cooking temperatures, avoiding the ingestion of raw meat, especially from unknown sources, and practicing safe food handling and hand washing routines. A mother who has become infected with Toxoplasma during pregnancy can pass it to her unborn child. Symptoms can vary depending on what part of the body is affected.
{June 2016}
• Ensure the cat litter box is changed daily. The Toxoplasma parasite does not become infectious until 1 to 5 days after it is shed in a cat's feces. • If you’re pregnant or have a compromised immune system, don’t adopt a stray cat, don’t handle stray cats (especially kittens), keep owned-cats indoors, and avoid changing the litter box whenever possible. If impossible to avoid, wear disposable gloves during and wash hands thoroughly after handling the dirty litter. • Feed cats only canned/dried commercial food or wellcooked table food. Raw or undercooked meats are off the menu. • Keep any outdoor sandboxes covered.

H
ow do you decide it’s time to take your dog or cat to the ER? Or what should you do before coming to the ER with your pet? Here are just a few guidelines to help you make that decision and help your furry loved one get the best care!
RIVA HERON, DVM, EMERGENCY SERVICES DIRECTOR, MISSION PET EMERGENCY
SAFETY FIRST Avoid being bitten by a scared, painful pet. Even the sweetest, most mellow dog or cat may bite their loving companions after a traumatic or unexpected event or when in pain. You may need to use a temporary muzzle or use a soft rope to tie closed a dog’s mouth when lifting into and out of a vehicle. The muzzle should be removed once the pet is safely in the transport vehicle. Wrapping a cat in a thick towel can help protect you from teeth and claws when your cat is unhappy, and a sturdy pet carrier is always a great way to transport small dogs and cats. CPR Yes, CPR can be done on dogs and cats in a manner similar to doing so for a person, although most of the time dogs and cats are placed on their side for CPR. CPR should only be done if you are SURE the heart is not beating. Doing compressions on a pet that is not in cardiac arrest can cause fatal arrhythmias. A good indication that CPR is needed (when you do not have a stethoscope to check for a heartbeat) is when a pet does not respond to stimulus, has eyes that do not blink when touched and does not swallow or move when the tongue is gently pulled. HEAT STROKE If you suspect heat stroke, place cool water soaked towels over your pet’s torso and paws and head to the nearest veterinary care facility as quickly as you can. In South Texas, think heat stroke for a pet that is found collapsed, minimally responsive or weak and has been out in the heat, or even worse, in a car! TRAUMA (being hit by a car, falling a long way, gunshot) If the patient is bleeding, apply pressure over the wound with a clean cloth. REMEMBER that this may be painful, so go slowly and use a temporary muzzle to avoid being bitten. Place the 16
patient on a stiff board to keep the patient as stable as possible when moving and try to keep the head, neck and torso straight when lifting. SEIZURES Any seizure that lasts for more than 5 minutes should be brought to a veterinary facility for assessment. You cannot stop a seizure at home (it may stop on its own, but unless you have medications to be given rectally or nasally, you cannot stop the seizure). What you can do is place your pet on the floor and away from stairs so that during or after the seizure, your pet does not become injured from a fall. VOMITING AND DIARRHEA Repeated vomiting and/or diarrhea can lead to dehydration. If your pet vomits more than 3 times in a 24 hour period, has both vomiting and diarrhea, has large amounts of blood in either the vomit or diarrhea, or becomes very lethargic, it is time to have your pet seen by a veterinarian. Remember, when in doubt, it is safer to bring your pet to be assessed by a veterinarian. Dr. Riva Heron attended the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (’95) and is also a retired Naval Intelligence Off icer. She has practiced Small Animal Medicine in Virginia, Minnesota and Florida and Emergency medicine in San Antonio at I-10 Pet Emergency. dentalfractures D
BY MJ REDMAN, DVM, DAVDC
ogs frequently break their teeth chewing on hard objects or playing with other dogs. Sometimes dogs chew on their crates when left alone or get in a fight with another dog. Cats can break a tooth, as well, and usually it is one of their canine (fang) teeth. We may not know how a tooth was broken, but we know it can be painful and should be treated sooner rather than later.

etiquette for Dogs in Weddings
ADVICE FROM A TRAINER
A
BY FRANK HAEGELAND
lthough the custom had been practiced for many years mostly in upper class circles, it was former Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson that first caused weddings between dogs to enter the headlines and the national spotlight when she arranged a wedding for her Golden Retriever, Star, and her Chihuahua, Luca, on the beach in Malibu, California in 2005. The tradition has since taken off, making dog weddings a new trend for animal lovers that these days have evolved into a hot commodity for all. If you love your dog like a child why not throw them a festive party with all their friends and parents?
And while we are on the subject of festive parties, why not include your pooches in your own wedding to make an extra fun and memorable day. More and more people these days plan for their pets, usually dogs, to take part in their weddings together with friends and family. Once the decision has been made to have a wed20
ding that includes the family’s best friend, for most people the next several questions usually follow in lockstep; “How do we make this furry beast who can never sit still stop jumping up and down on family members and guests alike?”. “How do we ensure that the human guests will have access to their food without first having to play a game of catch the canine
&

who stole the steak?” And although it was envisioned to work like a dream when the idea was first concocted, “How do we make this cutest of all puppies behave properly so the human bride and groom can retrieve their wedding rings without first having to wait until the next day to see if they are passed out through the rear of the furry ring bearer?” There are several ways to incorporate the family’s favorite canine into the ceremony; a popular choice is for the dog to bring the wedding bands down the aisle to the awaiting groom or to walk the wedding rings down on a pillow. You can for example have the dog wear the pillow on his back or hold a basket in his mouth. Yet if you don’t feel competent to take on a potentially major training project, an easier way out might be to have the dog simply perform certain tricks that he already knows. Whenever a furry charmer is to be included in a wedding ceremony, whether it is for a fun and festive wedding of two loving canines or for a human wedding, there are two considerations that cannot be left to chance, these issues must be planned for well in advance: (a) You must train the dog to behave properly in the chaos of fun and commotions that a wedding ceremony and party are to man’s best friend. Let me repeat that: You must train, practice, practice and train the dog for all contingencies and distractions associated with a wedding, especially if the pooch has been assigned tasks to perform during the ceremony. Keep in mind that the larger the event, the bigger the distractions. (b) You should seriously consider appointing one or more dog wranglers to be in charge of the animals. The wranglers would for example be in charge of otherwise easily neglected tasks such as canine bathroom duty. While some dogs may do fine off leash at least during parts of the event, others may need to be on leash during the entire event. Make sure you judge your dog correctly. While he may be calm and attentive to your every need during normal circumstances, a wedding with potentially hundreds of guests is far from “normal circumstances” and can be overwhelming for even the best trained canine. If you choose to train the dog yourself, most professional trainers agree that positive reinforcement of desired behavior works much better than punishing undesired behavior. As every owner knows, dogs are highly intelligent. Your job as a trainer is therefore to
{June 2016}
get your best friend interested in and focused on what you are teaching, and then to make the training fun – like playing a fun game. We all learn faster when the subject matter is exciting, pooches are no different. Assume you are training complex behaviors such as: (a) Walk down the aisle. (b) Carry a basket in your mouth. (c) Give the basket to the best man when you reach him. (d) Confidently ignore all guests, animals, birds and other distractions around you while performing these tasks. In order to perfect such complex behaviors, you must think “baby-steps” by training each behavior separately at first, and then combining them into what will appear as a seamless single behavior. Finally, once the dog has learned the entire series, you must start to introduce distractions, including having a crowd of people representing the guests at the real ceremony talking and laughing loudly while the dog is performing his tasks. If the real ceremony is to be held outdoors, you should ideally even introduce a few cats, squirrels and other animals in order to distraction-proof the dog. If possible, you should do at least the last third of your training in the actual venue of the event. Remember, anything you can do during training to perfect your four legged star’s performance, will pay off handsomely during the actual event. Finally, have fun with it – remember the worst that can happen is that your furry friend will cause the entire event to end in a much unplanned chaos. But what could possibly make the day more memorable than that? Frank Haegeland has trained dogs since he was 12 years old. He is currently the chief trainer at Pet Galaxy where he trains both dogs and their owners. Frank also treats dogs suffering from various psychological issues such as depressions, phobias, behavioral problems, etc. Frank never turns down trying to help a dog with behavioral issues, even dangerous dogs, so long as the causes are psychological in nature. Behavior problems stemming from medical issues such as a brain injury or hormone imbalances, are always referred to a veterinarian.

A Furry Wedding Story Ally & Jared Seago with Admiral
A
lly & Jared Seago tied the knot on June 20th, 2015 at the Lodge at Bridal Veil Falls in Spring Branch, TX. They chose to have their beloved Shih Tzu/Yorkie mix Admiral, as their Ring Bearer for their special day. Ally responded to these questions about their big day:
Q1: Why did you choose to have your dog a part of your wedding day? A: Admiral has always been involved in all of our biggest life moments. We couldn't have him miss out on the biggest day of our lives! My first question when looking for venues was: "Is my dog allowed to walk the aisle?" and if the venue said no, then it was no longer an option. Q2: How accommodating was everyone in letting your dog be a part of your wedding and did you get resistance from anyone? A: Everyone was extremely accepting of Admiral being in our wedding. My family and friends know that he is my baby, and I couldn't have him miss out on this special occasion. Some extended relatives were a little taken aback when I told them my plan, but that didn't matter to me: he was going to be there whether they liked it or not!
Q3: What advice would you offer any future couples thinking of having their pets in their wedding? A: If you are thinking of having your pet be a part of your special day, I would make sure that you have plans for them for the remainder of the event. Admiral had to be kenneled during the reception (though we did take him out for a few portrait shots), and when the limo came to pick us up, we had to get my brother to have him in the limo when we did our grand exit. It was also rainy during our day, so we had to be sure to have extra towels to dry him off, lots of treats, and plenty of water for when he was kenneled. Otherwise, go for it!! You only get married once! Q4: What was the best part of having your dog be a part of your wedding? A: The best part of having Admiral with us was having him in all of our photos. He is so special to us, and now whenever we look back at our most special day, he will be in all the photos and memories. He was the star of the show as a "Puppy Ringbearer" and got lots of giggles! :)

Q: I have two dogs that will bark at everything, excessively. What is the most effective ways to help control this?
A: Thank you for your question. Generally barking excessively is a sign of boredom and habit. I don't know how much exercise they get but I would recommend a 30-45 minute structured walk at least 4 times a week or more. When I say structured, I don't want the dogs pulling and barking at everything on the walk; they should be walking with you and paying attention to you. I would also recommend putting leashes on them in the house and when they start barking, grab the leash, call them to you, have
them sit, and reward them IF they are NOT barking. By doing this you are redirecting them to something other than barking and rewarding a good behavior. This is something that a good dog trainer can help you with, so I would also recommended you contact one in your area who comes out to the house and can help you with your pups.
"From my earliest memories to today, I have always loved dogs. They are apart of my everyday life. I was raised in a very close family. I have two brothers and one sister. My dogs have always been a part of my close knit family. My goal as a kid was to have my dogs pay enough attention to me and be trained well enough to go wherever I went. For years I trained and trained until my dogs were almost completely to that point. But I never was able to get them all the way there. Then I found Sit Means Sit. They had the same idea and methods of training that I did, but they had the tools to accomplish what I always wanted. I have worked with mini poodles to Mastiffs and Great Danes. Pure breeds and mutts. I love working with dogs and could not imagine a better life!"

A Furry Wedding Story
Kristen & Omar Gomez with Penelope
K
risten & Omar Gomez tied the knot on Saturday, April 16, 2016 in Dripping Springs, Texas. The couple felt it was extremely important to have their dog Penelope as part of their union. Kristen answered these questions about their big day:
Q1: Why did you choose to have your dog to be a part of your wedding day? A: We couldn't imagine our special day without her, she is a big part of our family, and our wedding was a reflection of that. She has always been a little light full of happiness and brings me and my husband so much joy! Q2: How accommodating was everyone in letting your dog be a part of your wedding and did you get resistance from anyone? A: Everyone was so accommodating to having her be a part of our special day. She was in the dressing room with me the whole time and wouldn't leave my side. I know she knew it was a special day. Our photographer, Svetlana Frolova, loved Penelope and did a very great job getting some sweet photos of her, really capturing her personality. Our florist, also made a custom fresh floral halo for her, she wore that halo proudly. We did our grand entrance as husband and wife with her ( she was carried
down the stairs by the groom) and she even hit the dance floor with us dancing to songs by Selena and George Strait! Q3: What advice would you give any future couples thinking of having their pets be a part of their special day? A: Advice: Anyone having hesitation about including their pet in their wedding needs to have a little faith in their pets behavior and go ahead and include them! I think they would be pleasantly surprised. Always appoint someone to be on "doggie duty" and make sure your best friend is being looked over and in a safe area! Q4: What was the best part of having your dogs be a part of your wedding celebration? A: Penelope brought so much extra sunshine to our wedding day, to me our day was complete with her celebrating with us and now I look back and have the biggest smile on my face. It was a completely perfect day!

Q: My young son fed our dog chocolate the other day. In the future if this ever happens again, what are the signs I should look for before I need to bring him to the vet or hospital?
A: When an owner notices any change in their pet’s behavior, it is always important to have a veterinarian examine the pet. Cats that urinate outside the box can have a urinary tract infection (UTI). A UTI can be diagnosed with a urinalysis and urine culture. If your cat does not have a UTI, a change in the pet’s elimination can be attributed to a behavioral issue. A change in the household may have the cat upset. Dr. Kirby graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1979 and earned his DVM in 1984. A: Exposure to chocolate can cause very mild illness or death depending on the amount ingested and the type of chocolate ingested. Baking chocolate is the worst of the types of chocolate because it has a high amount of methylxanthins (caffeine & theobromine). As an owner the first thing to do is call your veterinarian and let them know how much and what kind of chocolate your dog ate and what size dog you have. If the pet ingested a large amount of chocolate, time is of the essence when it comes to treatment. If it happens to be only a few minutes after ingestion, your veterinarian can induce vomiting with medication, a hydrogen peroxide/water mixture, or they can administer activated charcoal to block the absorption of the chocolate. If it has been several hours after ingestion, your pet will most likely be hospitalized. Some symptoms of chocolate toxicity are: vomiting, diarrhea, increased hyperactivity, muscle tremors, increased temperature, seizures, coma and death.
Q: Help! My 3 year old cat has been using the litter box for years and all of a sudden will not eliminate inside the box? Could there be something medically going on why he is doing this all of a sudden?

WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC
Including Your Pet in the
designofyourhome A
s a pet owner of two, one-year-old extremely hyper lab mixes, and, a sweet 20-year-old rescue cat, I know how wonderfully crazy, delightfully messy, and often unorganized a home with pets can be. Add kids to the mix - and it's easy to throw in the towel (and not clean with it)! However, as an interior decorator I want a beautiful and functional home for every space in it, including our pets'.
Our pets are part of our family, and, as such, should be considered in the design of our homes. We want them to feel at home in our space, but we don’t want our home to look like even the most up-scale doggie day care. With some careful consideration, we can make our homes work well for every member of the family- both 2-legged and 4-legged! Here are 9 ideas to help you add design, function, and beauty to your pet-friendly spaces.
BY THERESA NARAMORE OF TWIN SISTERS INTERIORS
1. Make use of often under-utilized spaces in your home. Areas such as the dead space under the stairs can be dedicated refuges for our pets. Building the pet areas into these spaces keeps the clutter to a minimum. 2. Add a dog washing station in your laundry room. As soon as your fur baby comes in covered with dirt and mud, you can clean him up with ease in a dedicated dog washing station. All the necessities will be within reach and you save yourself the hassle of cleaning the muddy paw prints throughout your home. 3. Add custom art of your pooch. An artist can interpret a portrait of your pet in a one-of-a-kind painting. Or, for a more cost-effective method of displaying your four-legged friend’s beauty opt for a framed photograph instead. Your local drug store or office supply store can print photo enlargements relatively inexpensively. 4. Keep leashes in a designated spot. Keeping leashes in a designated spot makes taking your pet for a walk a breeze. No one says functional hooks have to be unattractive, though! Some hooks look like little modern art sculptures. A store such as Ikea offers them at a great price in a variety of colors. 5. Craft a pet gate out of reclaimed wood. Sometimes it’s necessary to restrict your pet to a certain area or room in your home. It is not, however, necessary to install an unattractive pet gate that detracts from your home’s style. In fact, you can turn a negative into a positive by installing a gorgeous reclaimed wood barn door to corral your pup. Customize the color and style to match your home’s décor. 30
6. Organize pet supplies in one location. To maintain order and tidiness in your home, organize pet supplies in one location. Toys, treats, food, and supplies are easily accessible in a well-planned pantry. 7. Incorporate feeding bowls into cabinetry. How many times have you or a guest been bustling about in the kitchen and tripped over the feeding bowls? There’s no avoiding a food and water bowl, but why not incorporate the bowls into your cabinetry? It’s a small detail with a big impact. You may already have dead-space in an island, ideal for installing a pet feeding station. 8. Use pet-friendly fabrics on furnishings. When you own pets, it’s nearly inevitable that they’ll end up on your furniture. Furnishing your home with pet-friendly furniture and fabrics is key. Many manufacturers offer stain-guard at the factory. When purchasing custom pieces, look for fabrics with the highest rub account available. The higher the rub count, the more durable the fabric. 9. Keep carpets in mind. In addition to furniture, keep carpets in mind. The best rugs and carpets for pet owners are low pile caprets which trap less fur and dirt. There are many pet-proof rugs on the market in a variety of stylish patterns and colors. A patterned rug shows fewer stains than a solid color. Theresa Naramore is onehalf of Twin Sisters Interiors. She and her twin sister, Cheryl, younger by three minutes, have been decorating and adding beautiful design solutions to homes and commercial businesses in the greater San Antonio area since 2016. A Furry Wedding Tail
With Cassy, Austin & Gus Sheen
C
assy Joy Garcia & Austin Sheen tied the knot on October 24, 2015 in San Angelo, TX at the Sheen’s family's "river ranch" property. Their ceremony was outdoors under a riverside pecan tree grove and the reception was held in a barn.
The wedding took place on the same weekend Texas experienced some major flooding, but they proceeded as planned. Their guests stayed up in the barn where it was safe (and dry) while the wedding party, plus Gus, went down to the river for a rainy and magical ceremony. Gus, their beloved dog, was their ring bearer on that special day and was the bell of the ball. People loved him! They gave him nibbles of food and he danced the night away on the dance floor. Cassy went on to explain, that, Gus was their constant! He was with her while she was getting ready,
waited at the end of the isle while she walked down, traveled back out through the pews when they were announced husband and wife, sat with them while they ate dinner, and stood by their sides during their first dance. Gus kept reminding her what the day was about: family and love. He kept her present and focused on enjoying the unpredictable wild ride of starting life as a new family. Cassy also has an upcoming book "Fed & Fit" which will be in all bookstores nationwide (Barnes & Noble, Costco, etc) on July 12th, but is available for pre-order on Amazon right now.
