f you’ve ever been to Jennings Anderson Ford in Boerne you may have noticed two yellow labs roaming around. Their names are Boone and Gus. They belong to Scott Wilson and have been coming to work with him since they were just puppies. The dogs are a favorite with the kids that come by. They are always looking for the dogs and the dogs love seeing them. In fact, Gus likes to steal water bottles and kids toys--he just loves toys. Both Boone and Gus have been featured in television commercials and other advertising for the dealership. They’re real hams in front of a camera. They especially enjoyed their festive cake. The next time you’re in the area, stop in and say hello to Boone and Gus. You can find them in Scott’s office or hanging out with Robin, his assistant. Chances are they will be sleeping, but they won’t mind if you wake them up – that’s assuming you bring along a little something.

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER WOW! -Has it really been a year since we started? It seems like only yesterday that we were in the San Antonio Humane Society offices planning out this new venture. Our goals were threefold; to provide responsible information to pet owners in the San Antonio metro area, to provide awareness of the efforts of various groups that were striving to make San Antonio a no-kill city, and third, to have fun and touching stories about local people’s pets. The only missing piece of the puzzle was support from businesses, and support came through pet sitters, dog walkers, boarders, trainers, groomers, vets, pet boutiques, and just regular businesses that loved their pets. Fortunately, all came through to make our vision a reality. Numerous times we heard business owners tell us their policy was not to advertise, but they would make an exception for our magazine, which made me feel like everyone’s hard work was validated. Now, that we are firmly entrenched in the San Antonio pet community, we will not rest on our laurels , but strive to make our second year even more exciting for you-the readers. Thank You, for helping us celebrate one year! Sincerely, Dana Raimondi Tell our advertisers you heard about them in Texas Dogs & Cats-San Antonio! he San Antonio Humane Society and The Humane Society of the United States are commonly mistaken as the same organization that share funding; however the SAHS is not affiliated with the HSUS. Although the names are similar and both organizations strive to help animals in need, the SAHS and HSUS have different missions and goals.
BY SAHS COMMUNICATION INTERN: SARAH STOCKMAN
Our mission is to protect and improve the lives of dogs and cats by providing shelter, care, adoption, rescue, spay and neuter programs, and community education. In order to achieve this mission donations are very important. Especially as a non-profit, no-kill organization that does not receive support from state or federal agencies and relies on donations, grants and self-generate revenue to operate, every dollar raised helps dogs and cats directly at the SAHS. Many people donate towards the HSUS thinking that their donation will be used locally at the SAHS and while donating towards HSUS is a great contribution, none of those funds are given to the SAHS. If you want to help locally, then you have to give locally! Go online to SAhumane.org/ donate to find out how you can contribute towards our mission at the SAHS. The HSUS is a national animal protection organization, whereas the SAHS serves Bexar County and surrounding areas in San Antonio. The SAHS cares for homeless dogs and cats and the HSUS works to pass and improve humane laws. Once more, while the SAHS and the HSUS are organizations that share a similar name, they do very different jobs. The SAHS shelters, medically treats, and rehabilitates approximately 5,000 dogs, cats, puppies, and kitties each year! With numbers like these it is vital for the SAHS to receive any help that anyone is willing to give. Visit SAhumane.org to learn ways you can volunteer, foster, become an Ambassador and/or donate. There are so many options to help the SAHS achieve their mission, and you can be a part of it! With the goal of making San Antonio a no-kill
city, it is also essential to recognize that by contributing directly towards the SAHS you can have an impact within your own community. Because the HSUS is a national organization their work does not necessarily impact Bexar Country and its surrounding areas, whereas every effort at the SAHS is ultimately for the benefit of dogs, cats, puppies, and kitties in our community. For example, a major way that the SAHS contributes to the community is by offering low cost spay/neuter opportunities throughout the year, as well as multiple spay/neuter specials. You might be wondering, so what does that have to do with my community? Spaying and neutering provides many benefits and helps in limiting animal overpopulation. For more information about spaying and neutering and the benefits they have within the community, check out SAhumane. org/spayneuter! It’s easy to read “San Antonio Humane Society” and “Humane Society of the United States” and assume that the two organizations must be linked in some way, shape, or form. However, it’s important to realize the differences between the two and learn that the SAHS and HSUS are not affiliated. If you want to help locally, then you have to give locally to your one and only San Antonio Humane Society! Sarah Stockman is the Communication Intern for the San Antonio Humane Society. She is a student at the University of the Incarnate Word and has loved interning at the SAHS. She loves spending time with her 2 dogs, Copper and Princess, and 3 cats, Miss. Wyskars, Little Cat, and Theodore.

Whether you adopted an adult dog or cat, the milestones will be similar. Your pet should have become accustomed to the ebb and flow of your household. They should feel settled into a routine and be a part of the daily life of your family. You should have begun to feel like they have always been there. Potty training, if you had any initial issues, should be well under control and you should feel as at ease with your pet as they do with you.

I
remember the day when my daughter came to me tearful after watching the ASPCA commercial and vowed that she would do something to help animals. Since that day she has followed through and came up with a plan
BY: DR. PATRICIA GOMEZ DINGER
She had a toy that she had been playing with that looms bracelets and she decided she would make bracelets to sell and collect money to donate to “save animals lives”. She got together with her siblings, neighbors, and friends to start an organization that they have since named, Looming for Pets. The group has gathered together making bracelets, necklaces, rings, charms and sold them with 100% of proceeds intended for an animal charity. After considering many options, the group decided on donating to San Antonio Pets Alive (SAPA). This organization is dedicated to the exact cause that began Mykenna’s efforts. SAPA’s focus is saving the animals that have no other hope. They review the euthanasia list from the City of San Antonio Animal Shelter daily and save as many as they can. Often these animals are saved within minutes of their death. Did you know that 2000 neonatal kittens are killed each year because they are difficult to bottle feed? Our family chose to adopt one of these kittens in July before she was scheduled to be put down, and my children experienced the responsibility of bottle feeding a newborn kitten. It was hard work but truly enriched our lives. Only one month later, Looming for Pets had a donation of $244.50 to SAPA which was enough money to save one animal from euthanasia. If a handful of children can raise this much money in a short time, imagine what more helping hands can do! 12
So many children in San Antonio have looms, we invite you to join Looming for Pets and be a part of this worthy cause. If you would like to become a member of Looming for Pets and make bracelets to raise money for animal charities, email looming4pets@yahoo.com or like us on Facebook. You can check Facebook with updates on our next event. We plan on having an event soon where everyone can bring their loom and make bracelets to donate. Or you can start selling your loomed jewelery and bring any money you have collected to donate to Looming for Pets. If you would like to buy a bracelet to support Looming for Pets, they can be purchased through Advanced Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology Center in the Stone Oak Medical Building at 540 Madison Oak Suite 210. If you own a business and are willing to sell Looming for Pet Bracelets at your establishment, please call, 499ITCH or email looming4pets@yahoo.com. I am so supportive of my children’s enthusiasm for this worthy cause, that I am offering free dog and cat allergy testing and free pet allergy education to anyone who thinks they might have pet allergies who has adopted a pet from a shelter or has donated to Looming for Pets! think we can all agree that no one looks forward to seeing the dentist. Even with the best of terms we dread making that call let alone when we have a toothache. Most people will then complain about a toothache for days, even weeks, before making an appointment. This is taking into consideration that we brush our teeth twice a day, floss, rinse, etc. and see our dentist every 6-12 months! Our pets, on the other hand, typically don’t have that luxury.
{May 2014}
us they have oral pain so it’s our responsibility to ensure there is no oral pain. As our pets age their teeth progressively become more diseased at a faster rate than our allowing for painful conditions to develop. This is why it’s crucial to slow that progression with proper home care. IT is also beneficial to address any oral disease when our pets are younger and less likely to have concurrent health concerns. Dental disease is very common in our furry friends. It can serve as a chronic source of pain and promote systemic diseases if left untreated. Teeth do not improve by themselves over time so it’s important to prevent such painful conditions by addressing them early on. This will be less costly in the long run and more importantly keep your pet comfortable. Do your best friend a favor and ask your veterinarian what you can do for your pet’s dental care at home or if a professional dental cleaning is in order. Dr. Marshall Beggs graduated from Ross University of Veterinary Medicine in 2010 and has over 10 years of veterinary experience to offer. His veterinary interests include surgery, emergency medicine, internal medicine, dentistry, and geriatric care. With a passion for teaching Dr. Beggs strives to develop a personal relationship with the owner while providing a strong understanding of the treatment offered. In his spare time Dr. Beggs enjoys spending time with his family and staying active. Dr. Beggs practices at Towne North Animal Hospital, 13335 San Pedro Ave, SA, TX. (210) 494-1903.
BY DR. MARSHALL BEGGS
Would it be so far fetched to think our pets don’t have those same toothaches, bleeding gums, and secondary headaches? Considering they chew on bones, toys, rocks, recliners, and your favorite shoes, it is no surprise many of our pets suffer from dental disease. Up to 80% of our pets suffer from untreated dental disease simply because they will seldom show any outward sign of oral pain. Our pets do an incredibly good job at hiding their discomfort and for good reason. Ancestrally speaking if a pet was to stop eating, they would likely starve or be ousted from the pack which are not very good options. Most pet owners report foul smelling breath as the main reason for discussing dental care and not the diseased painful teeth that we find. We often notice older dogs and cats with untreated dental disease prefer canned food to dry. Also some of our older dogs can be more irritable which most people attribute to “being old”. Owners will likewise report that their older dogs and cats are “picky” eaters when they really have a painful mouth and choose not to eat until their hunger overwhelms them. After safely removing any chronic source of pain those pets often return to their normal routines. Naturally the best way to slow the progression of dental disease would be to brush our pet’s teeth daily after each meal, which is not a realistic option for most families. There are several strategies that will help slow down the progression of dental disease. However, your pets will still need a professional cleaning to assess all those teeth to look for fractures, infections, etc. Even with the best home care some teeth will need to be extracted or restored depending on the amount of dental disease present so please don’t be discouraged. Remember our pets will not readily tell

Q: I have a five year old mixed Shepherd that has been constantly scratching his body and his skin under his fur seems to be very red. Is there some sort of topical cream I can put on him or do I need to bring him in for allergy testing? —Thank You, Jack A: When your five year old dog scratches like that you need your veterinarian to examine him. Your veterinarian will discuss diet, causes of allergies to include food, fleas, airborne pollens, molds, etc. Treatment options are: • Baths • Antihistamines • Fatty acids • Allergy testing • Antibiotics, if needed You may want to discuss with your veterinarian the pros and cons of a new product on the market called Apoquel. Q: Can you please ask the Dr, why my cat is constantly licking himself. He has been doing this
much more the last couple weeks. Do you know what could be the cause? —Thank you, Amy A: Many cats that seem to “over” groom with excessive licking, etc., tend to lick more on their sides or abdomen. Causes include: • Allergy to food, fleas or airborne pollen • Psychogenic alopecia • Metabolic causes An appointment with your veterinarian for an examination, bloodwork and possible skin scraping will give the best diagnosis and treatment options. He/she will want to discuss non allergic food, fatty acids and possible steroid if needed. Q: I have a 7 month old (large) German Shepherd puppy. When he is ready to come back inside he jumps all over the French doors and has even figured out how to open the door. The doors have levered door handles. I am afraid as he gets bigger he will ruin the door. How can I stop it now? — Rhonda, A: Hello Rhonda, I know how frustrating this issue can be. Some of what’s going on is the fact he has figured out how to open the doors. This makes him jump more and he is determined to make the doors open again because it has worked before. What I would recommend doing is showing him what he needs do before the door can open. A few options are having him sit or have a bell on the door for him to use. Once he understands what will open the door jumping will subside. Most important part is being consistent and making sure not to open the door when he is jumping on them. Q: How can I train my dogs to stay off our sofa/beds when we’re not home? — Venus, A: Hello Venus, This is difficult. It is easy for us to reinforce staying off the sofa/beds when we are at home, but at this point they understand when you will not reinforce it. Here are some options that can help. I would be very consistent and never let them on the sofa/bed when are
you home at anytime. Second you may consider utilizing a kennel or crate when you leave the home. I would also recommend teaching a “place” command, somewhere designated they can go when you are home or sitting down. This gives them an understanding of where to be and shows an acceptable area to lay on. Training dogs is a passion of mine. I started out doing obedience training with one of my shepherds and really fell in love with it. After a few years of training on my own I starting training with Sit Means Sit. It feels really great to help owners achieve goals and build a bond with their dog. On top of doing obedience I also do advanced dog sports. It really caught my eye when came into dog training. I now run a protection club in Austin, Tx where I currently live and work.

annual exam the importance of an
W
hy bring your pet to the veterinarian each year for an annual exam? That is a very good question, and my clients have a lot of very good questions. Pet owners debate the necessity of an exam when their beloved pet seems healthy.
Most veterinarians recommend at least yearly exams and for good reason. Your pets age more rapidly than we do. The first year is equivalent to about 17 human years, the 2nd is equivalent to 7 years and each year thereafter to 4 years. A 2 year old pet is equal to a 24 year old person, and a 3 year old pet is equivalent to a 28 year old person. In the first 6 months of a puppy and kitten’s life, their body is undergoing tremendous growth and change. Your veterinarian needs to be monitoring this growth to make sure they are on track to be happy and healthy adult pets. Once your pet reaches adulthood it is important to be sure they aren’t developing health issues. Since each year after 2 years old is equal to 4 of our years a lot of change can occur from year to year. An estimated 40% of apparently healthy animals receiving an exam have some conditions needing medical attention. One example is dental tarter; it continuously develops in cats and dogs . Most pets need to have their teeth cleaned at least once a year after age 3. When your veterinarian is examining your pet they check the teeth and gums and may make a recommendation for cleaning or brushing, whichever is appropriate for your pet’s dental health. Gum erosion and chipped , broken or missing teeth may be found during the exam and these findings need immediate attention. Poor dental hygiene can lead to other health problems particularly with the liver, bad breath, kidneys and even the heart. Other problems often found in pets showing no symptoms are ear infections, skin tumors, internal tumors and heart murmurs. The sooner these are addressed the better, before they become major health problems resulting in life threatening and more costly
treatment. Some of these findings may lead your veterinarian to run further tests to rule out certain conditions such as thyroid disease, adrenal problems, or digestive disorders. Once your pet has reached 7 years, annual blood work is often recommended to detect underlying conditions which a physical exam alone can’t reveal. These tests are very similar to what our family physicians order for us. These tests give a more complete picture of our pet’s health. Again, since your pet is now aging about 4 years to 1 of our human years, many physical conditions will change from year to year particularly in these older pets. Annual exams are an important component to ensure the best possible health of your pet. Your veterinarian wants to help you keep your pet a vital member of your family for as long as possible. These exams along with appropriate vaccines, flea and heartworm prevention help to give you many happy years to share with your pet. hipdysplasia
H
ip dysplasia is one of the most common orthopedic problems faced by our pets. But if your animal is diagnosed with hip dysplasia, what exactly does that mean? Hip dysplasia is defined as an “abnormal development of the hip joint”. Pets with dysplasia have a “loose” hip and instability, which causes damage to the hip joint and leads to progressive, painful arthritis.
BY DR. HULSE, DACVS, DECVS
One of the most common symptoms of hip dysplasia is a “bunnyhopping” gait, which means the hind legs of the affected dog move in unison, coming forward and moving back together, similar to the way a rabbit runs. Other clinical symptoms include reluctance to jump, difficulty rising, muscle wasting of the hip area, and pain when the hips are extended behind the dog. While we most commonly see hip dysplasia diagnosed in larger breed dogs, any breed can be affected. Young dogs, puppies, and adult dogs can be diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Steps can be taken to save the hip if the condition is caught before arthritis develops. A simple and quick procedure called juvenile pelvic symphysiodesis ( JPS) may be indicated if hip dysplasia is diagnosed between 3-4 months of age. This minimally invasive surgical procedure is associated with little pain and modifies the growth pattern of the hip, leading to a deeper, tighter hip joint. If hip dysplasia is diagnosed between 5-10 months of age, the puppy may be eligible for a double pelvic osteotomy (DPO). DPO’s shift the position of the socket, making it deeper and increasing the coverage of the hip. JPS and DPO procedures are designed to save the normal hip and prevent arthritis. In cases where arthritis is already advanced, many patients will require a total hip replacement (THR). THR’s use a specially-made artificial ball and socket joint to recreate the hip, and is the best option for most patients facing severe hip problems. Unlike many other treatments, THR’s have 22
a high probability for return to normal function, with an excellent long-term prognosis. Another option for other patients with advanced hip dysplasia is a femoral head ostectomy, or FHO. With FHO’s, the ball portion of the hip joint is removed, and a “false joint” of muscles and ligaments is created. This procedure is generally only recommended for smaller animals, and wherever possible a THR is preferred for the best result for the patient. If your pet is diagnosed with hip dysplasia there is hope! Talk to your family veterinarian to learn more about hip dysplasia, and if a referral to Mission Veterinary Specialists is right for you and your pet. Dr. Hulse, DACVS, DECVS graduated from Texas A&M in 1970 & completed his surgical training at Kansas State University in 1973. Commencing in 1970 and continuing until his appointment as a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Texas A&M in 1984, Dr. Hulse served as a clinician in general practice and as a Staff Surgeon at Louisiana State University and Oklahoma State University. He has developed techniques commonly used for treatment of bone and joint disorders in dogs and is a coauthor of Small Animal Arthroscopy.

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA
W
hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not
agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.

{petsafety} BY DR. JAMES PETERSON
giftideasforpets from a vet’s perspective A
s members of the family, our cats and dogs enjoy a great deal of affection, a warm home and the best foods to eat. A large number of these four legged family members will also receive some sort of gift to commemorate the holidays, a birthday or other special occasion. So, what kinds of presents are both fun and safe for our pet friends? Veterinary experts recommend the use of interactive toys that encourage exercise and activity. This has the dual benefit of burning calories from overweight pets and also providing a needed outlet for highly active dogs, like the working breeds. After all, a tired dog is a good dog! To help meet this need for entertaining toys, companies like Kong (www. kongcompany.com) and Pet Qwerks (www.petqwerks.com) have developed innovative new ways to keep our pets active. Many of the Kong toys, like the Bounzer or the Wobbler, will bounce in random directions when tossed and are made of very durable rubber. One of the best and least expensive toys to keep indoor kitties moving is any one of the wide variety of Kitty Teaser products. Aikiou (pronounced “I-Q”) (www.aikiou.com) has created a line of interactive feeding stations that simulate hunting and foraging activities. Likewise, Premier Pet Products (www.premier.com) uses their Busy Buddy line of toys to reward dogs for playful, constructive behavior. It’s also very easy to find an amazing array of designer clothing, leashes, collars and even special feeding bowls for your unique friend. But, beyond all of these material things, what other gifts can help make sure that your pet is healthy and well protected? One of the simplest and best ways to keep your pets safe is to make sure that they have permanent identification. Far too many pets are lost or stolen every year and the vast majority of these animals never make it back home to their owners. Have your veterinarian implant a microchip and be sure to keep the registration information current. Another helpful gift idea is a pet health insurance
30
policy. Although Fluffy and Fido may not fully appreciate it, having a policy can really lessen the impact of a traumatic accident, serious injury or substantial illness. When it comes right down to it, all of the special toys, interactive puzzles or unique pet sweaters won’t take the place of the most important thing you can give your pet…your time! Spend some time every day with your pet by engaging them in play or some quiet grooming. It’s the very best thing you can give and your pet will love you all the more. Your veterinarian or professional trainer is also a great source of advice for finding the right activities for your pet’s abilities. He or she can suggest other safe toys that will help keep your pet physically and mentally healthy. Dr. James Peterson is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He began his career in Emergency Veterinary Medicine in San Antonio, and has practiced both Emergency and Small Animal Medicine in San Antonio for over 20 years. He is currently a director of Mission Pet Emergency in Northwest San Antonio and owns Hill Country Animal Hospital & The Palms Pet Resort in Helotes, TX.

Maxies 1st Birthday! Owner: Jennifer Thornhill
Odie’s 8th Birthday! Owners: Ashley & Scott Harmeyer
Maxie was adopted from the SA Humane Society. We went to visit my family in Charlottesville, Virginia. She turned one on April 24, 2010 and I threw my very first dog birthday party! We made a dog friendly cake out of peanut butter and carrots, while the humans enjoyed a vanilla cake with Maxie’s picture on it. We celebrated at the only dog park in town and invited Maxie’s brothers, sisters, cousins, and made new friends at the park! Maxie received gifts of all sorts, from treats to a pet first aid kit! The humans even helped the dogs sign birthday cards! It was very fun for everyone involved!
Odie’s had many enjoyable birthdays, but his 8th birthday was extra special. Odie spent the day with Jackie Bear, his best doggie friend. We went to my friend’s house and baked dog friendly birthday cakes. The cakes were made with peanut butter, carrots, and were very healthy. The pups thought they were super yummy! We sang Happy Birthday and they played for a while. Odie was dog gone tired when he got home!! {May 2014}

DOGS CELEBRA Libby Celebrating Her 1st Birthday! Owner: Molly Simmons
We had the party in our apartment and the guest list consisted of my boyfriend’s friends from school and their dogs. We ended up having five dogs, which was the perfect amount for the small space. To keep the party moving, we planned games everyone could play with their dogs: Musical chairs, Bobbing for Zuke’s treats, a trick contest, and we did a raffle too. We had a bunch of different prizes for the dogs. For our party favors, we bought those cute little mini buckets from Target’s dollar bins. Each bucket had a piece of leftover cake, a Kong tennis ball, and some extra treats in it for later. The menu was my favorite part! For the humans, we had a pretty intricate hot “dog” bar with a ton of top-
pings. We wanted to make sure whatever we ate was somewhat dog friendly in case they got ahold of it. We did lemon bars and cupcakes with dog sayings on them for dessert. For the pups, we kept it simple with boiled chicken, brown rice, baby carrots, and bacon crumbles. We lined up the plates on the floor and they all dug in. Our dog is part beagle so she was more than happy to clean up anything the others left behind. For dessert we ordered a bone-shaped cake from Woof Gang Bakery, which ended up being pretty adorable. We knew it was going to be the best day day of Libby’s life thus far. Nothing makes her more happy than good food, lots of attention, and dogs to run around with. They even brought presents!
THE BLUEBONNET BUNK’N BISCUIT is the realization of a decade long dream to provide quality, pet supportive boarding, exercise and interaction for the San Antonio community. We believe that the human-pet bond is one that should be nurtured to maximize the benefits to both human and pet.

We try to do something special for Vixxie on every birthday whether it’s a puppy cake or a new toy but last year, for her 5th birthday, we decided to celebrate her wonderful little life and throw her a princess puppy party! The party was held in our home with her closest friends and family. She was actually the only fur baby in attendance because Vixxie is pretty much a diva. Since it was princess theme, we had pink and blue tiaras, which even the boys were festive and wore. We also had puppy snouts for all of our guests! There were pink and purple balloons scattered throughout our home and all the decorations were princess puppy theme and they were so cute with little diamonds and puppies with tiaras. We also had a cute Happy Birthday banner in front of our table as well as pink and purple swirls hanging from the ceilings. On the table and along our bar, I put bone and tiara shaped confetti. I also had candy mints on tiara lollipops on the tables for
the humans. Her (human)nephews and nieces actually came over and ran around with her and also played pin the tiara on the pup. We had two cakes, one was an ice cream princess cake for the humans and a “Happy Birthday” cake just for Vixxie. Everyone gathered around the table and sang “Happy Birthday” and her dad cut the cake. She received a ton of toys and treats for her birthday, one of our friends in particular actually got her five or six toys and it was this birthday that she got her first Coach collar and a Chewy Vuitton toy! She was also dressed up in a tutu and a shirt that said, “It’s hard being a princess”. It may seem odd to some people but I am SO happy that we did this for her at least once. I’m sure she had no idea what was going on other than she was getting a lot of attention and yummy stuff but I really just wanted to celebrate her life here with us. I feel like her life is so short and she’s made such a wonderful impact on my life that she deserves everything!

DOGS CELEBRA Penelope Celebrating Her 1st Birthday! Owner: Kristen Perez Penelope’s 1st Birthday Pawty was held at Phil Hardberger Dog Park ( in the small dog section). It was located in the off leash section so all the mini Dachshunds can run free. We invited all of her family, best friends from the neighborhood and all of her friends from the San Antonio Lowrider’s Group. The activities we had at the pawty was a pinata filled with assorted dog treats and toys for the dogs to play with in the park. We served her furry friends dog bagels, cinnamon dog treats and peanut butter and apple dog ice cream from the Groovy Dog Bakery in Austin,TX. Each of her pup friends also received a goodiebag
with bones, treats and toys in them. We also had a pupcake made for her by the Groovy Dog Bakery in the shape of a bone and she personally chose the flavor of her cake to be Apple and Rice, which was definitely a crowd pleaser. Overall, Penelope enjoyed playing and seeing all of her family and friends, eating yummy cake and treats and opening all of her birthday gifts. Her friends that couldnt make it to the fiesta even sent her their best wishes one way or another. Her first birthday was definitely one for the books.
TING BIRTHDAYS! Daisy celebrating her 1st Birthday! Owner: Linda Salazar
Daisy’s 1st Birthday was so much fun for all our friends and family members. The cake was from a home made dog friendly recipe. Each guest received a dog friendly goodie bag. All able doggies and human partners played Musical Chairs, Treat Treasure Hunt, and played with a galore of toys. Our forever friends/guests were treated to a fest of dog-licious treats. To add to the dog-tastic frenzy fun, there was a
Most Original Trick contest, a Most Fun Party Outfit Contest, and doggie friendly door prizes. There was a child size pool with water so the doggies could cool-off with some splash time water play fun. Before we knew it, many of our little guests settled down for a siesta. Many of the gifts were donated for less fortunate doggies looking for a forever home.

AFTER
Meet Storm. He is a Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie). He is a loving dog owned by wonderful people! He has no need for his thick mass of hair, so recently he came by for a haircut! As we are approaching the Spring and Summer months, more fleas and ticks are looking for new homes to live in. The more hair a doggie has, the easier it is for them to hide and reproduce. Storm will have less of a problem with that, since his human parents will be better able to detect any bloodsucking insects wanting to make a home out of their beloved pet. Storm is now also ready for the coming Texas heat. He is sporting his “Summer look, and feeling clean and fresh. Whether your looking to give your pooch a fancy cut or just a light trim, all dogs need some TLC, and at K9 Klub Dog Grooming, Martha and her staff enjoy giving all their love and expertise to all their customers! Pet Party Word Search! BALLOONS BIRTHDAY BONES COOKIES FRIENDS FURRY INVITATIONS PICTURES PRESENTS PUPCAKE PUPPARAZI
Pet Party Facts and Information According to an article in Psychology Today, of 1,000 people surveyed, 81% of dog parents know their pet’s birthday and 71% celebrate by buying them a present. Steps in Planning your Pet’s Party: 1. Set a Date 2. Choose a Location-Important to find a location where there is easy access for your furry friends to relieve themselves. 3. Make an Invite List-Decide how many and the best mix of people/furry guests your location can accommodate. Also, invite dogs/cats, thinking on how they will get along. If there will be children there, make certain they will be supervised at all times. 4. Send out invitations-This can be via email, hand written or by mail. Decide a theme and have fun! 5. Decorations-Again, decide based on your theme. 6. Plan on a Party Menu-Make certain you have food for both your furry guests and non-furry guests. It’s a good idea to keep all food that is safe for pets incase they get into the human food. 7. Plan fun dog/human games 8. Most importantly have a dogone fun time and take lots of pictures!
