ur models are sisters, Star and Spirit, which are crème colored Golden Retrievers. They are 4 years old and owned by Curtis & Penni Scheh. Curtis & Penni own Reliable Delivery and Moving, which has been in business for 23 years. You may have seen their trucks around town with Golden Retriever pictures on the sides.

BY CURTIS SCHEH AND GABBY FRANCIS

Reliable Delivery and Moving have been animal activists for many years and have adopted and cared for 9 strays (Happy, Bear, Rocky, Pumpkin, June, Millie, Salt, Pepper, and Blue) over the past 23 years. If a stray dog wanders up to their offices, it has immediately found a loving home for life. Curtis brings his pets to see Dr. Anne James of Blanco Crossing Animal Hospital. Our human model, is Desiree Rodriguez, an employee of the Aloft San Antonio Airport Hotel. Just because you have to be away from home doesn't mean you have to leave anyone behind. Aloft San Antonio Airport Hotel knows that traveling can be stressful, and having a friendly face along with you always makes the journey more fun. So bring Fido, Rover, or Spot along. Our Arfsm (animals are fun) program provides your pet with a dog bed, bowl, woof-alicious treats, and toys, so you don't have to worry about extra luggage. We take care of our human guests during their travels too. Our hotel offers fast & free WiFi, a free airport shuttle, and free parking. After a long day of shopping or working come down from your loft inspired room to enjoy the energizing public spaces to socialize, or just enjoy the hum of activity as you do your own thing. Sip a drink, read the paper, or work on

your laptop in Re:mixsm lounge or W XYZÂŽ bar, where lighting and music change throughout the day to set the perfect mood. Stay active on the road with a trip to the 24/7 Re:chargesm gym or take a dip in the splash outdoor pool. We look forward to welcoming you and your VIP (very important pet) on your next trip to San Antonio. If your dog weighs more than 40 pounds, please contact the hotel directly to discuss a waiver. F

BY LYNDA MELENDEZ, DVM, MS, DACVIM (INTERNAL MEDICINE)

or many pets, there comes a time in their lives when they need to have their regular food changed to a therapeutic food that will help manage chronic diseases. Proper nutrition is imperative for extending the lives of dogs and cats with kidney disease, liver disease, and other medical conditions. The task of transitioning from a tried and true food to a new one, however, can be challenging. Not only can sudden changes cause gastrointestinal upset, but it can result in food aversion.

14

The traditional way to transition from one food to another works best if the pet has a good appetite and is not very finicky. At each meal, add a little of the new food to the old food and continue to increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of the old food until the pet has been completely switched over. (see detailed illustration) This works great for many animals, but there are those who do not like change –in flavor, texture, shape, or aroma. They need different strategies and more time to transition, so you need to be patient. In addition, they need to have a good appetite and feel secure. Here are some suggestions: First, many animals, especially cats, do not like to have their food “adulterated” with something new. Some flavors, textures, and aromas don’t mix. Instead of using the traditional approach by mixing the foods together, offer the two foods side by side in similar bowls. Use the same percentages as illustrated, but take more time. It may take 3-4 weeks to get the final transition done. For each meal, place the appropriate amount of each food in individual bowls. When they’ve finished the old food, they will investigate the new food if they are still hungry. Make sure each time you feed a meal, you fill the bowls with a fresh offering of both the

old and the new food. Secondly, never try to transition an animal to a new food if it is nauseous due to a disease process. This often creates a food aversion that lasts a lifetime. It is important to first get the disease process and nausea under control and then start the transition to the new food. Thirdly, never try to transition while the pet is in the hospital. The stress of being away from home amongst strangers often makes a pet associate the new food with that stress and they develop a food aversion. Start the transition to the new food once they are at home and settled. Utilizing these strategies will help make the challenge of transitioning to a beneficial therapeutic food much easier and help ensure success. Dr. Melendez received her DVM from Texas A&M University in 1993 and completed a three year residency at Colorado State University. After her residency, Dr. Melendez held positions in academia, private practice and industry before joining Mission Veterinary Specialists as one of two board-certif ied internal medicine specialists.

getting the most out of

BY IRMA BICE

yourtrainingclass

16

FIRST THING’S FIRST Successful training begins before you sign up for the class! In order to build a solid foundation for learning, choose a trainer you like and trust. If you aren’t on board with your trainer’s approach and philosophies, you aren’t going to be as motivated. Look for someone with experience and credentials; having a positive approach to both you and your dog’s learning process is key. Don’t be afraid to interview a prospective trainer – important words to listen for are “positive reinforcement,” “science-based” and “force-free.”

POST GRADUATE WORK After graduation, strive to incorporate training into your daily routine. The techniques you use should be consistent with the ones you learned in class. For example; if you used treats and praise in class, you should continue using them to ensure continued improvements in behavior. Don’t hesitate to keep in touch with your trainer – they can be a source of ongoing support for you and your dog. Training is a lifelong process and every new situation encountered is an opportunity to learn and grow together.

BE PATIENT You might hope for immediate results, but training is a process. Try to commit to two short sessions a day, no more than ten to fifteen minutes per session. Your trainer has designed the class and homework to ensure that you have the best opportunity to produce results. Stick to the plan and be patient. Remember, this is all new to your dog! Work gradually with the goal of setting your dog up for success. Jumping ahead, losing emotional control while working with your dog and/ or giving them too much freedom can hinder progress. You may have invested in the very best training program, but it is useless without your trust in the plan.

ALTERNATIVES TO GROUP CLASSES If scheduling conflicts, or an overwhelmed dog, are keeping you out of class, DON’T GIVE UP ON TRAINING! Consider alternative options such as a board and train program or private sessions.

CAPITALIZE ON CLASS TIME You have an expert in their field at your disposal – take advantage of the opportunity! While we communicate verbally, our dogs communicate with us through their body language and behavior. A good trainer will act as an interpreter to bridge the communication gap between you and your dog. Come prepared to class with any questions you might have and don’t be afraid to share your experiences. Your dog’s behavior might embarrass you, but an experienced trainer has seen it all! The trainer needs to see the full picture of what you’re struggling with, and other people in the class will benefit from hearing your concerns addressed.

Irma Bice is the Training and Playcare Director for the Palms Pet Resort & Spa. She has over twenty years of experience working with dogs as a trainer, obedience competitor, conformation exhibitor, and breeder. In her nine years of teaching obedience and behavioral classes, Irma has worked with all breeds and temperaments, including fearful, timid, and high-energy dogs. Irma is a certif ied professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA), an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator, a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, a member of the National Association of Treibball Enthusiasts, and a founding member of San Antonio Pet Trainers Alliance.

irthdays, anniversaries, and farewells—there’s plenty of reasons to throw a party, and as with any other aspect of our lives, we want to include our pets too! Treats, games, cake, and a house full of animals—including the four-legged kind. It’s bound to be a stress-free, no-worries, no-danger kind of day, right?

BY DR. COURTNEY H. BRIDGEMAN, CHIEF VETERINARIAN, SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY

I didn’t think so either. The usual party foodstuff isn’t always pet-friendly and as we’ve discussed on multiple occasions, introducing animals of the same or different species can be both challenging and, if done incorrectly, dangerous. But let’s discuss how we can make this pet party run as smoothly (or smoother!) than a people-party. For the sake of word-count and time, we will be assuming that all pet-invitees are of the canine variety, as feline introductions tend to take much longer than a single afternoon. Finding a recipe for dog-friendly treats is as easy as “googling” your search. For homemade dog treats, be sure to check the ingredients. Rule out any treat containing chocolate, raisins, or grapes. Peanut butter works great, but be sure to check the label! Anything containing xylitol, an artificial sweetener, can be deadly to pets. Minimize sugar, dairy products, and fat when baking for pets. They’re not poisonous, but the wrong amount is likely to cause digestional upset. Hot dogs are fine faire as long as they are ingested in moderation. For the sugary finale, a white cake can usually be tolerated by the pooches as long as icing is sparse and not sugar free. When playing games during a pet-friendly party, plan to play games where owner and pet play on teams or where well behaved dogs can play in confined areas off leash. Play games such as “Simon says” using obedience commands, follow the leader, memory, or “four-legged races” are often great fun.

18

Frisbee, fetch, agility obstacles are also socially beneficial and great diversions for the well-behaved pet. Don’t forget weather can play a big part too! Before hosting the soirée, check the weather for the day of the event. Temperatures over 90 degrees should be avoided! I would also strongly suggest avoiding raining days—not that the dogs would mind, but the dog-owners might! If your party goers don’t mind a wet dog or the smell they bring with them, a pond or swimming pool is tons of fun. But before we can put on this pet-friendly party, we’ll have to be sure the pets can be friendly towards one another! On to the pet-introductions. If possible, introduce all dogs to be invited slowly and one at a time, preferably before the shindig. It’s not always possible, but it’s worth the effort if you can manage it. Try to invite only polite “social butterflies” to the party, i.e. well-socialized pooches who frequent dog parks and know to do the ol’ “meet and greet” in a civilized fashion. In general, a neutral location that a single pup does not “own” is preferable to someone’s backyard when brining in a group of unknown dogs. That is, unless the doggie host has a habit of being very friendly with all newcomers. With these kinds of dogs, walk in the door and drop the leash or unclip as soon as possible. Dogs do much better when they aren’t feeling your tension on the other end of a tight leash. When creating your guests list, avoid dogs with any history of aggression or prey drive and,

if possible, try to stick to pups of a similar size.

Q: My 10 year old dog has been coughing a lot lately. How do I know if this is allergies or possibly a heart issue?

A: The first question I must ask: is your dog is on heartworm prevention? When a dog has heartworms, they will develop a cough. I recommend that your veterinarian examine your dog to evaluate their heart function, lung sounds and overall health. Radiographs of the chest would be necessary to evaluate the heart and lungs, bloodwork would also be necessary in diagnosing a heart issue because there are certain blood markers for heart disease. I would also recommend and ECG if there are any problems with the heart. If the heart and lungs are normal, allergies can cause intermittent or chronic bronchiolar disease which would result in coughing. Q: Help! My 3 year old cat has been using the litter box for years and all of a sudden will not

eliminate inside the box? Could there be something medically going on why he is doing this all of a sudden? A: When an owner notices any change in their pet’s behavior, it is always important to have a veterinarian examine the pet. Cats that urinate outside the box can have a urinary tract infection (UTI). A UTI can be diagnosed with a urinalysis and urine culture. If your cat does not have a UTI, a change in the pet’s elimination can be attributed to a behavioral issue. A change in the household may have the cat upset. Dr. Kirby graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1979 and earned his DVM in 1984. aking off for the summer vacation? Who’s going to care for your family pet? Today, you have multiple options: Charlie goes with you, Molly vacations at the local pet resort, a pet sitter visits Max at home a couple of times a day, or Coco goes to a friend’s or relative’s house. When deciding which option is right for you, consider the following.

BY BETH TURNER JONES - OWNER: HILL COUNTRY PET RANCH

If you can take Charlie with you, great. But, that is not always practical or possible. When you leave town, what do you want for Charlie? A happy, comfortable, and safe environment, so you can enjoy your time away content that he is receiving the best care possible. A professional pet care facility (aka boarding kennel) is a business designed and operated specifically to care for pets. It can be the next best alternative to your loving care. Consider your dog’s personality. You may think Max will be more comfortable at home. We agree. He is most comfortable at home with you, but is he comfortable spending the night home alone? He is used to his routine at his house. Changing that routine can be more stressful than changing both his routine and location. New location plus new routine equals doggie vacation! The vast majority of dogs actually enjoy their stay at a boarding kennel. Dogs are social animals and like contact with people and other dogs. At a quality pet inn, professional, trained staff is around a minimum of 8 hours a day. Max will interact frequently during the day with people trained to recognize and evaluate dog behavior. A well-run facility is built and staffed to accommodate dogs and keep them safe and happy. Molly can have a comfy bed, piped-in music or even TV, and air-conditioned private quarters for rest and sleep. Many allow you to bring her favorite bed or toys for that touch of home. She will be fed a premium dog food, and lodging staff will make sure she eats well. If she needs meds, they will be 24

properly dispensed, on a timely basis. Molly can stretch her legs and talk to her doggie friends in her outside run, and enjoy playtimes in a fully fenced, secure play yard, with other doggie friends that have been specially selected based on breed, size and temperament, and/or with people whose sole job is to play with Molly. The building itself has proper ventilation, the staff utilizes cleaning and sanitation protocols, and the resort insists on current vaccinations, all to keep dogs healthy. At bedtime, you can take comfort knowing Molly has had an active, full day, and is tucked in, safe and sound. Professional pet care facilities are stable and dependable. They are staffed 365 days of the year. They won’t get sick or change vacation plans that prevent them from taking care of Coco. They have relationships with local veterinarians, including yours, so if something does happen, Coco gets the care she needs. Consider a professional pet care facility for your next trip. Your dog will thank you. Beth owns and operates the Hill Country Pet Ranch, a full service pet care facility outside of Boerne. Beth was a Labrador retriever owner and breeder, as well as a tax partner in a national accounting f irm when she decided to build the Hill Country Pet Ranch, which opened in August 2000.
