biteprevention&you A ccording to the American Veterinary Medical Association, an estimated population of 70 million dogs are living in U.S. households, and millions of people—mostly children—are bitten by dogs every year. That’s millions of injuries, happening coast to coast, which could have been prevented.

BY SAHS ASSOCIATE VETERINARIAN, LESLIE HOPES

These numbers may be shocking to some, but for others these numbers reaffirm those negative experiences with dogs or cats that likely occurred during childhood. I’ve been there too. A neighbor’s dog deciding my arm was a chew toy, a terrifying bike ride with a small terrier biting at my ankles, but I recognize the importance of examining the situation: when the neighbor dog bit me, was I doing something I maybe shouldn’t have been doing? And why or how was the small terrier able to escape his yard? What could have been done to prevent these pet bites? Dog and Cat Bite Prevention: The most important actions parents need to take in order to prevent a bite from a pet is to practice responsible pet ownership, learn some basic animal behavior, and help children understand when and how to approach animals. Children, especially young children, should never be left unsupervised with an animal. This includes family pets too; it’s important to understand that any animal has the potential to bite. Responsible Pet Ownership A possible source of a pet’s negative behaviors, including biting, is negligence from a pet owner. Being a responsible pet owner involves properly socializing your pet and providing positive reinforcements to encourage positive behaviors. Pets who are not socialized with other people or pets, whether through exercise or social visits, may react with fear when forced into social interactions. This could potentially lead to an animal bite. Responsible pet ownership includes setting boundaries for pets who may have already developed certain problem behaviors. Many pets, such as those from rescues, have already developed anxious behaviors as a result of abuse or neglect. One of my own dogs does not interact well with strangers, so I take precautions not to place him in situations where he may feel uncomfortable or overly

stressed. However, keeping your pet confined to your yard or on a leash is not the answer. Not allowing your pet to properly exercise, play, or roam is another major factor resulting in unwanted animal behaviors. Some animals may simply bite from overstimulation. This is true for many cats who respond lovingly to initial affection but then with sudden disdain when a certain part of their body is touched or from prolonged touch. When it comes to our own pets, parents would do well to learn their pet’s body language and to share these observations with their children. Children should avoid pets who are growling, barking, hissing, have raised hackles, pricked ears, raised lips and exposed teeth. Don’t forget your veterinarian is a wealth of information and will often have recommendations for socializing your pet and understanding their behavior. Children and Pets When children are meeting a new dog, it’s important to ask permission to approach a dog from pet owners prior to petting the animal. Despite the friendliness of any dog, behavior is always unpredictable. This is applicable to cats as well. Children (and adults) should allow any animal to sniff or examine your hand, palm down, prior to interaction. Parents should not allow their children to approach a pet that is sleeping, eating, or playing with a toy. Some pets may exhibit possessive behaviors towards these items. Each of these tips exemplify the importance of respecting an animal’s space. A child’s overexcitement when approaching a pet can startle a dog or cat into a biting out of fright or defense. Education is Key! It’s important for all members of the family to practice bite prevention. The goal is to keep your family happy and safe—and this includes the family pet too! Whether it’s the cute dog just begging to be petted or the grumpy cat who prefers to avoid house guests, every animal has the potential to bite—and every person has the potential to prevent that bite!

felineinjection sitesarcomas

F

eline injection site sarcomas (FISS) are rare cancerous tumors found in cats associated primarily with previous vaccine administration, but may be associated with any type of injection, microchip or potentially even a suture reaction. These are tumors of connective tissue under the skin that are thought to arise as a result of a local inflammatory process associated with injections.

BY MEGAN SUTTON HOWARD, DVM (HEAD OF ONCOLOGY)

The risk of these tumors associated with vaccination is low, with reports showing that prevalence is estimated at about 1 case per 10,000 to 30,000 vaccinations. These tumors can occur 2 months to 10 years after injections. These tumors are rare, but they behave aggressively, so early recognition and treatment are A feline injection site sarcoma. important for a good outcome for these cats. As these tumors became more widely recognized in the 1990s, a task force (the Vaccine-Associated Feline Sarcoma Task Force) was created to study the tumors as well as identify criteria to use to address the development and early recognition of the tumors so that they could be more effectively treated. The task force recommended that vaccines be administered in specific limbs, as far down the limb as possible to help identify which injection caused the problem and to facilitate removal, should a tumor arise. The task force also recommended that veterinarians and owners monitor the vaccine sites for the formation of any lumps under the skin after vaccination. Usually, most masses that form after vaccines are self-resolving vaccine reactions, but if a lump does meet any one of the criteria of the 3-2-1 rule, it should be investigated further. • Lesion is still present 3 months post-injection • Lesion is larger than 2 cm at any time • The lesion increases in size any time after 1 month from injection FISS are difficult to treat because they are very invasive into surrounding tissue, necessitating an aggressive surgery to remove the tumor and surrounding normal tissue to prevent regrowth. These tumors can also spread to other organs, primarily the lungs, up to 25% of the time. Therefore, prior 14

to surgery, chest x-rays should be completed, and advanced imaging, such as a CT, is usually recommended. This can help to determine how invasive the tumor is and plan for surgery. Because these tumors are often so difficult to remove, surgery by a boardcertified surgeon is often recommended and has been shown to result in improved survival times. In some cases, surgery alone may not result in complete removal of the tumor, and radiation therapy may be considered as an adjunctive treatment. For the vast majority of cat patients, vaccines are safe and low risk. Therefore, we do recommend responsible vaccination for our cat patients, taking into account local laws, lifestyle, and risk for infection. The goal is to adequately protect our pets from dangerous diseases while minimizing less needed vaccines. At home, careful monitoring for any new lumps and bumps on your cat and getting them checked out quickly is always important, especially after injections. Dr. Howard graduated from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. She completed her internship at Auburn University then returned to Texas A&M for her residency in medical oncology. Her interests include improving quality of life for patients undergoing cancer treatment and diagnostic cytology.

V

acation season is here! For most people this usually involves long car rides or transportation via airplane. However, not everyone can part with their beloved pets and would rather bring them along.

in the truck bed then make sure they are in a carrier. I have seen too many injuries and fatalities in emergency hospitals that were related to a dog being in the back of a truck bed tied up or with no security at all," said Stickney. Dogs can easily suffer burns from hot truck bed surfaces either on the bottom of their paws or belly. Chaining your dog up in the back of a truck bed can lead to them accidentally hanging themselves as well. Also, as cute as it is and as much as they might enjoy it, letting a dog hang out of a window can lead to severe injuries or death. "It would be a good idea leading up to a trip to do a few short test drives with your pet if he is not used to riding in a vehicle. Get him excited about riding along, then eventually make the rides longer and longer to help wean the pet into the idea of a long drive," recommends Stickney. This can help minimize fear and anxiety in the dog for the big trip, especially if the dog is prone to getting nauseous. There are sedatives that you can give dogs or cats if the animal has anxiety. Consult with your veterinarian for a prescription for your dog or cat, then on the big day administer the medicine around one hour before your departure on an empty stomach. "If the pet is prone to car sickness or vomiting and the owner would like to use medication, we prescribe Dimenhydrinate which is the same drug that is used for people," said Stickney. Always consult with your veterinarian for correct dosing and safety of any drug for your pet. Along with running some test drives with your animal before the big trip, it is a good idea to test out the medication beforehand to make sure that you will get the expected result. "Every dog reacts differently to medication and some are not affected by sedatives," said Stickney. Stickney explains that many sedatives decrease a dog's ability to regulate their own body temperature; therefore it is important to keep them in a temperature controlled environment when traveling. Working air-conditioning in the car is essential. The important thing when traveling with your pet is not to just throw them in the car and go. Some pets are more high maintenance than others but as long as you are sensitive to your particular pet's needs when traveling; you can insure a much more enjoyable vacation.

19

REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM TEXAS A&M

"Most airlines require a rabies certificate so you will want to make sure that your pet is up to date with all of their vaccines," explains Dr. Mark Stickney clinical assistant professor at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. "Depending on where you are flying you may also need to get a health certificate which typically needs to be completed within 10 days before the day of travel." Stickney advises for this to be planned in advanced because not every veterinarian is accredited for this service. Airlines have become more proactive with tending to the needs of animals such as the temperature in the area they are stored in or making sure they have access to water. Even so, it would be wise to be more cautious when flying if your pet is older or has health issues. Also, remember to bring any and all medications they might need. You do not want to be half way across the country trying to locate a veterinarian or prescription. "Make sure that the dog or cat always has a collar and tags on them, but also be careful that there is not anything hanging loosely from the collar that could get caught in their crate," said Stickney. "A microchip is an excellent way to permanently identify your pet." If you are bringing your dog or cat along for the ride make sure they have had their yearly exam and are healthy enough to handle the trip. If you are traveling to a different climate it would be wise to educate yourself on any diseases or problems that the animals in that area can experience. "For instance, when traveling from a Northern climate to a Southern climate your dog might need to be put on a heart worm and flea preventative for the trip," said Stickney. Along those same lines, if your pet is used to being in a cooler area and the place you are traveling is hotter or more humid this can be particularly rough on them. Extra efforts should be made to make sure that they have plenty of rest and water and do not over exert themselves. Stickney recommends when traveling with a dog or cat that you always have a carrier or leash on hand in case of unforeseen circumstances like car trouble. It is best to keep cats in a carrier when you are in the car so that they are not able to hop around and possibly cause any dangerous situations for the driver. "Riding in the cab is always best for the pet, but if a dog must ride

Q: What can I do for my dogs, they get itchy and start scratching during allergy season? —Thank You, Sue A: During allergy season (this varies in Texas, can be summer, spring or fall), our pets will itch and scratch, rub and roll to soothe their itchy bodies. Allergies can be due to airborne pollens, mildew, grass, trees, dust mites, fleas, contact allergens and many more. Your veterinarian must narrow down the cause to use the appropriate therapy. Bathing is number one for dogs and cats with allergies. Number 2 would be an option of giving

antihistamines which work in about 20 percent of pets. Number 3. Fatty acids are helpful but I don’t believe they are as helpful as once believed. Number 4. Cytopoint a monoclonal antibody injection that only stops the scratch but not any redness or swelling. Number 5. Apoquel which I do not recommend in my clinic but is used a lot by many veterinarians. Number 6. Steroids when appropriate are effective. Number 7. Cold laser therapy along with baths.

If you live in Stone Oak, Encino or any of the adjacent communities, Pet Galaxy’s new coach bus pickup and delivery service may soon be coming to a bus stop near you, or for an additional fee, directly to your home.The new offering is a subscription service customized for each individual family and canine. The company will pick up your dogs every morning and drop off your happy and satisfied best friend every evening. During the day, the dogs will be provided plenty of play time for exercise with all their canine friends, access to playing various fun enrichment games such as “Use Your Nose to Find the Treat” and retriever games such as having a staff member throw a stick, tennis ball or frisbee. If desired, dogs may even participate in formal obedience training instructed by one of the company’s professional dog trainers. Even all-important nap-time is scheduled for each dog at strategic times during the day. Each bus can safely transport over 50 dogs (and cats), which means this is a limited offering on a first come, first serve basis, especially targeting families in the Stone Oak and Encino areas. Pet Galaxy is located about 20 minutes’ drive north of Stone Oak on Hwy 281, and has been offering daycare, lodging, grooming and training services for almost 10 years running. The facility occupies almost 6 acres in the city of Spring Branch, and is arguably best known for their huge outdoor doggie play yards, and as Lynn Haegeland, Director of Operations, adds “Please don’t forget our fantastic staff, and our service that we work so hard to ensure is second to none.” Most facilities located in and around the city of San Antonio offer either tiny indoor-only play areas, or in a few cases, a small outdoor play area. However, common for most of these, is that they are usually much too undersized for any real doggie play to materialize. If you have seen one of these facilities, you may have noticed how the dogs mostly stand around looking at each other, and the only break in the monotony is whenever a staff member decides to take a walk around the area. In the latter case, most of the dogs will simply follow the human to see if he or she has any fun ideas. {May 2018}

PET GALAXY'S NEW BUSES

Pet Galaxy, in contrast, is located in the beautiful Hill Country north of San Antonio. The facility covers almost 6 acres, and provides large outdoor play yards featuring natural ground cover and plenty of oak trees with squirrels and other fun wildlife. The largest of the yards even includes a palm-tree encircled in-ground doggie swimming pool with a 7-foot water fall and a giant oyster with a pearl that spits water. Your furry friends can run, play, swim and just be a dog to their hearts’ desire. A visit would quickly convince you that these are the happiest dogs in San Antonio and beyond, bar none. But don’t simply take our word for it, take a look at some of the videos and many photos on the company’s Facebook page (http://facebook.com/PetGalaxyUSA). “Many of these canines’ families initially told us that their dogs did not like other dogs, or did not like to play at all.”, Lynn points out. “The reason was that they had previously taken their furry friends to some other facility with much smaller, or virtually non-existent, play yards. They could not believe their own eyes when we showed them video of their best friends running, swimming and playing uninhibited.”, Lynn affirms with a proud smile. As all informed dog owners know, it is absolutely essential for canines large and small to get plenty of exercise. Dogs have a vast surplus of energy, referred to by experts as “predatory energy”. This is the energy store originally utilized by the animal in pre-historic times, when dogs had to hunt for their own food just like other predators. The energy is still there, creating a very strong craving in the animal for running and serious exercise, in most cases much more than a human, even an Olympic runner, can offer. Dogs need other dogs both for socialization and friendship, and for serious play. Otherwise they take out their frustration in some other way; for example, your flowerbeds, your underwear, shoes or furniture. For more information and to subscribe to the service, call Pet Galaxy at 830-885-5335 or 210-526-9680, check out their website at http://PetGalaxyUSA.com or their Facebook page at http://facebook. 25 com/PetGalaxyUSA.

and memories

lvis was like a lot of dogs, he absolutely loved to go for rides in the car! Of course there were many destinations that added to his love of it. In addition to the annual family vacations Elvis was always part of, there were the trips to the ice cream shop for special doggie treats, the Starbucks for his “Puppuccino”, and the bank where biscuits would magically appear in the drive-through teller’s drawer.

BY COLEEN ELLIS, PET LOSS CENTER

For Elvis, this must have been his version of a theme park ride at Disneyland! These rides were such treats that his loving pet Mommy and Daddy would sometimes just put him in the car and drive around the block. It warmed their heart to see how happy it made him to sit in the car, occasionally sticking his head out the window to take in the delicious smells that only a doggie nose could love. In fact, his Mommy and Daddy said they were like most “crazy pet lovers.” They got to a point with all of their own doctor visits and travel to and from the medical offices they had to spell words such as “car,” “go for…” and anything else that had to do with the vehicle moving or Elvis would make a move toward the door! As they said, Elvis was also the smartest dog they knew. In Elvis’ final days, his pet parents talked about how many miles they put on their car as they did what Elvis loved best. As his time was drawing near, they adjusted their seating in the vehicle as he could no longer hold himself up to put his nose out the window. They positioned him on a pillow nestled on one of their laps so he could be high enough to get his nose out the window. As with the countless other times throughout his life he’d cherished doing this, they made sure these last few days of his earthly existence were just the same. His Mommy said she swears she could see Elvis smiling as he could still take in the amazing smells. His last day was full of tears and memories for 28

Elvis’ family. They started the day with one more car ride for him. Friends and family members came by to deliver Elvis his favorite treats and one more kiss on the nose. Dr. Donna showed up at the selected time, and they did what they knew would make Elvis smile, they put him to peace in the back seat of the car. My heart broke for Elvis’ family. Their heart was shattered as they shared their stories and how empty their house was without the rambunctious Spaniel. We had completed their final arrangement request of cremation, and Elvis was ready to go home. We shared more stories, and I learned more about the huge spirit that rocked their world for 13 years. As they prepared to get into their car, I noticed suitcases and amenities for a trip. They confirmed they were taking a much-needed break as Elvis’ care had been a bit draining. And, of course before they left town, they wanted to pick up Elvis in his urn. It would only be natural that he would go with them. After all, that’s what he’d always done.
