LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER The Holiday season is upon us and we need to establish guidelines for what our furry family members will experience this season. To that end, we have three articles that will come in handy. The first, by SAHS intern, Veronica Araiza, informs us of potentially dangerous foods that may be harmful to your pets. The second article provided by the Texas A&M Veterinary school, reminds us of possible problems that your pet could accidentally cause to Holiday guests and how to avoid them. Finally, the third article, by Deanna Luke, of The Palms Pet Resort & Spa, gives us tips on how to prepare your pet for boarding stays while you travel for the Holiday season. Our calendar of events can provide you with local opportunities for you and your pet to share. This issue also highlights the winners of last month’s Halloween costume contest which voting was conducted on our Facebook page. For those of you who are taking an outdoor vacation with your dog, Dr. Youssef, of North Star Animal Hospital, informs us how to treat and hopefully prevent a snake biting your dog. We hope you and your pets have a very enjoyable Holiday season. Yappy Thanksgiving! Sincerely,

actoring out family and football, Thanksgiving is generally all about what’s being served on the dinner table. Don’t get me wrong, family is a pretty big highlight of the holiday too, but nothing brings the family together quite like the Thanksgiving feast—and that includes your four-legged family members. Consequently, pet owners must be extra vigilant of their pets, and keep these tips in mind as the holiday’s race their way around the corner.

BY SAHS COMMUNICATION INTERN, VERONICA ARAIZA

BEFORE DINNER Keep your pet’s temperament in mind. Before family and friends arrive, be sure to designate a special area for your pet that is quiet and away from any rambunctious guests. Your pet may not be feeling as social as you during the holiday season. Keep in mind, many items used in meal preparation are dangerous to your cat or dog: • Undercooked Meats & Raw Eggs: Turkey, ham, and eggs that are not well-cooked can contain salmonella bacteria, which is poisonous to your pets. • Bread Dough: According to the ASPCA, your pet’s body heat has the potential to cause dough to rise in their stomachs. This can lead to bloating, vomiting, and severe abdominal pain. • Cooking Ingredients: Onions, garlic, scallions, chives, and leeks can cause anemia in your pets, whether they are cooked or uncooked. Grapes and raisins used in stuffing and other thanksgiving dishes are toxic to your pet and can cause kidney damage. Chocolate, especially unsweetened baker’s chocolate, is fatal for pets if ingested. Pets are not able to metabolize theobromine, a component of chocolate, as easily as humans. This poisoning can lead to severe illness with complications such as dehydration, slow heart rate, and death. DURING DINNER While it may be tempting to include your pet in the festivities, please keep these guidelines in mind when deciding what should and should not be shared with your pet. • Turkey: Turkey served to your pet should be well-cooked, boneless, and in small portions. Bones can become lodged in your pet’s esophagus or gastrointestinal tract causing an emergency situation. • Stuffing: Sage and other herbs used in stuffing may contain essential oils that are harmful to your pets,

especially those with kidney disease. • Ham, Gravy, Pies, and other fatty foods: Foods high in sodium or fat are not generally recommended for your pet, even on special occasions. Too much fatty, rich, or unfamiliar foods can give your pet pancreatitis or gastroenteritis and can cause upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting. AFTER DINNER As the Thanksgiving dishes leave the table and pile into the trash can, make sure you’re keeping an eye on any wandering paws mistaking the garbage for their own holiday feast. Your garbage may contain not only harmful foods and ingredients, but wrappings and packaging too. Food wrapping, such as aluminum foil and wax paper used for left overs, should be kept away from pets as they can cause intestinal obstruction if confused for a Thanksgiving treat. We all enjoy spoiling our pets, but there are plenty of ways to treat them without the possibility of an emergency veterinary visit. Satisfy their Thanksgiving appetites with treats or pet-appropriate holiday recipes found online or in bookstores. ‘Tis the season to over-indulge, just do yourself and your pets a favor—do it responsibly! Veronica Araiza is currently interning at the San Antonio Humane Society while she attends the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is a native to San Antonio and currently shares her home with her Belgian Malinois, Darwin, and Shiba Inu mix, Emma.

4 Paws Animal Hospital

L

BY DR. OLGA JAIMEZ

ast month 4 Paws Animal Hospital celebrated its 10 year anniversary. The hospital was established in Oct. 2005 and has been serving the South San Antonio area with quality veterinary care. Dr. Olga Jaimez opened 4 Paws Animal Hospital to provide affordable veterinary medicine including medical, surgical, and dental care for our community’s pets.

10

Dr. Jaimez was raised on the Southside of San Antonio, and returned to practice to the area after graduation from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. “I love the Southside and I’m glad to be part of the new revitalization that is going on in our area,” says Dr. Jaimez 4 Paws Animal Hospital has grown over the last 10 years, from only 2 staff members to 11 valuable staff members, including 5 licensed veterinary technicians (LVT’s) and a receptionist that has been with the hospital since the beginning. In addition to staff growth, the practice has added new equipment for improved patient care. We have a digital dental x-ray machine and a high speed drill unit to help with diagnosis and treatment of painful dental problems. The hospital also offers the latest in-house diagnostic equipment, with new laboratory machines that can quickly perform blood work while the client waits. 4 Paws enjoys giving back to the community by sponsoring several events for the community. The Fiesta 4 Paws is a pet pageant/costume contest held the 1st week of Fiesta. Participants have been featured in the King William Parade each year, for the past 10 years. Another big event the hospital holds is the 4 Paws Howl-o-ween Pet Costume Contest. 4 Paws Animal Hospital is pleased to be part of the veterinary community. Come visit us today, we are conveniently located off of IH-37 South. You can also find us on Facebook and www.4paws-vet.com

Congratulations to all the participants in the

2015 Halloween "Spook"tacular Contest

ll the contestants were absolutely adorable. After a week long of voting on our Texas Dogs and Cats San Antonio facebook page, our winner was decided to be Avery, dressed as Beetlejuice, owned by Ana. Ana used 4 Paws Animal Hospital as the advertiser she wanted to represent. You can see a full profile about 4 Paws on the opposite page. Ana won a $125 Gift Certificate to Maid Affordable.

Avery BY ANA VALDEZ Avery is pound for pound a spunky, little, yorkie tomboy who loves to be the center of attention and can become very vocal to achieve that goal. My friends and family are amazed that such a little dog can have such a big personality. She is 6 years old but still acts like a puppy when it comes to toys and thunderstorms. One of her favorite past times is to sit on the balcony and bark at the neighbors and their dogs. As soon as she sees her harness, she’s ready to go out and about. Avery has competed in several Halloween pet events for several years now. She has won different prizes dressed as a

Bonzai BY LAUREN TAYLOR 2nd Place was awarded to Bonzai, dressed as a Sailor. Bonzai is owned by Lauren and she used Paws in Heaven as the advertiser she wanted to represent. Paws in Heaven is a family owned pet crematory open to the public in South Texas. They are located at 2106 Sattler Rd. New Braunfels, Texas 78132 and you can contact

them at 830-9642210. Lauren won a customized charm from Silver Pet Prints Texas. Bonzai is a very active little Eskie guy who loves playing with his toys and swimming in grandma's pool. He especially loves his Sundaymorning Starbucks trips with mom, usually with his head peeking out of the window while enjoying the scenery.

mailbox, Beetlejuice, iPhone, and most recently as a chicken. I have taken her to events such as the Urban Pet Market, Barktoberfest, 4 Paws Animal Hospital’s annual Halloween contest, Dia de los Perros, and most recently to Thomas J. Henry’s Bark in the Park. Avery also has her own Tokipoki pet trading card. She was also the 1st Halloween cover for Texas Dogs and Cats magazine-San Antonio. She is quite a character and is always camera ready especially when she hears the magic word “treat”. She can sit and give you her paw on command and when she chooses can do some other simple tricks. I find it very amusing and gratifying that people know who Avery is before they remember my name. And I think that’s the way Avery likes it too.

Posh BY JULIE SERRATO Posh Serrato rounded out the contest with third place. Posh is owned by Julie who works and represents Mission Pet Emergency. Mission Pet Emergency provides overnight emergency services 7-days a week and 24 hour care weekends and holidays. Mission Pet Emergency is located at 8202

N Loop 16043 W and you can contact them at 210-691-0900. Posh is a 7yr old maltese that enjoys dressing up and participating in dog costume events. She loves dog walking groups and jogging at Hartberger Park. Posh is also the face and model of Posh Peticure...a very fashionable "posh" pet boutique. 11

falling for the holidays

accidentproofingyourhome

A

s family members of all ages come into town for the holidays, safety is always something to be kept in mind. Although you’re probably already making sure that children aren’t running through the kitchen or touching the hot stove, you should also be sure that animals are kept under control and cleared from the walking path, especially for the safety of your elderly relatives.

REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM TEXAS A&M

A study published in the Journal of Safety Research reports that more than 87,000 people are treated in emergency rooms each year due to falls associated with their pet dogs and cats, and the highest percentage is among those 75 years of age and older. “Elderly people should be very cautious around young and poorly trained pets,” said Dr. James Barr, assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “Injuries can result from jumping up on the elderly owner and knocking them over, which can be pure accident.” Tripping over pet toys and getting tangled in leashes are other common causes of accidental injury. Some pets also have a habit of lying in frequently travelled hallways or doorways, causing someone to trip if the animal is unseen. However, if you consider your pets to be part of the family, you’ll want to include them in your holiday celebrations. Fido and Fluffy can still join in on the family fun, as long as you take a few precautionary measures to ensure the safety of those around them. Prior to the arrival of any guests, be sure to clear the 12

floors andstairs of miscellaneous pet toys or objects, and place any food and water bowls out of the direct path. Your pet will likely be happy to give up their favorite chew toy if it means being able to interact with all of the new people. “Also, biting and scratching behavior can be a potential problem for those with compromised immune systems and fragile skin,” said Dr. Barr. Be sure that your pet is comfortable around visitors to reduce the likelihood of lashing out or even jumping on them out of excitement. Although pets want to be around us constantly, especially when we’re cooking in the kitchen, this can often be very dangerous. If possible, keepthem out of the kitchen while you’re cooking and at meal times to avoid accidental injury. This may mean letting them out into the backyard or putting them in their kennel temporarily. Even if Fido is trained and well behaved, the excitements of havingvisitors may cause him to jump or run excessively, posing as a potential hazard to children or elderly family members. You should use your best judgment indeciding whether it is safe to have your pet around family members and certain holiday traditions.

Meet Foxy

hird time’s a charm… Cover model Foxy was adopted from the San Antonio Humane Society in 2006 by Mike and Kim into her forever home after she had been adopted and returned not once, but twice before. Little did she know what lay in store for her as a founding member of Pawderosa Ranch Doggie Play and Stay. Foxy quickly adapted to her role on “The Ranch” as head Cowpup. She would eagerly greet her friends at the door, take them back for a fun day of play, and send them home

tired from playing chase all day. Her favorite activities have always been playing tug, lounging in pools, riding in cars, and eating treats. She will proudly tell you that she is spoiled. Foxy recently celebrated her 10th birthday and shows no signs of slowing down. Now she runs a different type of Ranch with her brothers Panzer Faust (cover model November 2014) and Wonton. This Ranch is home to Belted Galloway Cattle (“Oreo cows”), horses, a donkey and some chickens… A charmed life indeed!

intervertebraldisk diseaseindogs W hat is intervertebral disk disease (IVDD)? IVDD is one of the most common neurologic diseases in dogs. The intervertebral disks are natural shock absorbers for the spine and lie between the vertebrae. The normal disk consists of an outer fibrous ring surrounding a jelly-like center. IVDD occurs when there is degeneration of that center and it becomes dehydrated and mineralized.

This degeneration changes the way the spine handles everyday stresses from jumping, running and walking. Over time the outer fibrous layer can rupture and the inside material can herniate and compress the spinal cord leading to clinical signs. The most common area for disk herniation to occur in dogs is in the middle of the back, but herniations can also occur in the neck.

BY JOCELYN COOPER, DVM, DACVIM (NEUROLOGY)

Who is at risk for IVDD? Dogs of any age and breed can develop IVDD. Dachshunds have a particularly high risk of disk herniation compared with other breeds and often have their first event between the ages of 2-6 years old. Other breeds that may suffer a disk herniation as a younger adult include the Cocker Spaniel, Shih tzu, Beagle, Chihuahua, and miniature Poodle. What signs might my dog show? Clinical signs may include back pain (yelping, hiding, decreased activity or appetite), difficulty walking, or paralysis. It is important to see your veterinarian in the early stages so that they can identify the source of pain and direct treatment. How do I know if I need to see my veterinarian urgently? If your pet is showing mild signs of discomfort but can still walk normally, still schedule an appointment but you do not necessarily need to rush them in emergently. The next best thing to do is to confine your pet in order to avoid more injury with continued activity. If your pet is suddenly struggling to walk or cannot move one or both limbs then it is an emergency that he or she be seen even afterhours or on the weekend. 16

Does my pet need surgery? What are the treatment options for disk herniation? Dogs that have mild signs can often do well if treated conservatively with strict cage rest, antiinflammatory and pain medications. Dogs that can barely walk or that are paralyzed are considered surgical candidates. This may mean that the dog needs emergency surgery that night or the following morning depending on the neurosurgeon’s assessment. MRI and spinal surgery are usually performed at specialty hospitals by board-certified veterinary neurologists or surgeons. What is my pet’s prognosis for recovery after surgery? The prognosis is determined by the neurologic status before surgery. As long as the pet has sensation in the limbs they typically have an excellent (90-95%) chance of recovery, even if paralyzed. However, the prognosis drops to about 50% if they lose the ability to feel the limbs, which is another reason to seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Dr. Cooper is the boardcertified small animal neurologist at Mission Veterinary Specialists. She graduated with her DVM from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine & then completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at the University of Missouri. Dr. Cooper completed a three-year Neurology/Neurosurgery residency at Texas A&M in 2012 and was awarded the neurosurgery certificate in 2013. She completed certification for Cervical Disc Arthroplasty in 2014.

ou’ve chosen the facility that’s the best fit for you and your pet. What’s next? If you have the dates you’ll be needing to board, book your reservation well in advance, especially during popular travel times. If possible, introduce your pet to the facility prior to their stay. By scheduling a day boarding visit, overnight stay, grooming or day care you will be familiarizing your pet with the sights, sounds, and smells of the facility as well as the staff.

WITH KRYSTAL MORRIS OF SIT MEANS SIT Q. My dog is constantly jumping on guests as he greets them. How can I prevent that? Any tips? A: Great question that so many people have trouble with! First off, having tools to help you when that big distraction happens will go a long way. Any time your dog is greeted by someone outside on a walk or in the home or is getting a treat or food, have them sit and only be fed or pet when their butt is touching the ground. Stop petting and get them back into a sit if needed. This will continuously teach them that they get a reward when they are sitting. When the big distraction of people coming to the door and greeting them happens, they will have a foundation to start with by sitting. Make sure they are on a leash, step on the leash so he/she can not jump up fully. This will help you correct them from jumping and get them sitting again while managing that excitement of guests. Q: My 3yr old Boxer Stella has started jumping against our glass backdoor every time she wants in. She never did this before but now she does it every time she wants in. What can I do to break her of this bad habit? A: Unfortunately, when you let your dog in after she jumps on the door to stop her, she thinks that is what is needed now! A couple things you can do is wait till she stops jumping for a few minutes and then let her

in only then. Not the most ideal but sometimes waiting out the dog will show them that action doesnt work though that will hurt your door in the mean time! You can practice door boundaries at every door to help her understand there is room she needs to respect. When she tries to come inside or is going outside every time, walk in front of her, pushing her back to give room between her and the door, about the distance of the door itself when its open. Have her sit as well and then ONLY when you tell her she can, use a command like 'Outside' or 'Inside.' to let her understand you will give her permission to come in and out. Krystal Morris is a trainer at Sit Means Sit. Krystal has always loved having dogs as a part of her life and feels that being a dog trainer has only strengthened her love for them as companions. She is honored to help individuals have a harmonious relationship with their canine family members. Krystal also dedicates her time to work with rescues in helping place down on their luck dogs. Krystal encourages more people to consider whether they can offer loving arms or a warm home for the night to a canine in need as her philosophy is, "Canines rule!!!"

what to do if a

snakebitesyourdog

T

here are many things to love about living in Texas. We have a great culture, beautiful rolling scenery, and a nice warm climate. Just as with anything else, however, we have to take the bad with the good. One of the downsides of life in the Lone Star State is that we have our fair share of snakes. Fortunately, most of our snake population is non-venomous, but we do have several poisonous varieties, including Copperheads, Cottonmouths, Harlequin Coral Snakes, and several rattlesnakes. While snakes do generally keep to themselves, they will strike if they feel threatened. This can be very dangerous for dogs, as curious pups and wary snakes do not make a good combination! In this article, your local San Antonio veterinarian offers some tips on what to do if your dog is ever bitten by a snake. SYMPTOMS The first thing to check for is puncture wounds. Usually you will see two, with some bleeding, bruising and swelling nearby. With non-venomous snakes, this may be the extent of the damage. Extreme swelling and tissue necrosis are symptomatic of venomous snakebites. As the poison spreads, Fido may vomit, become lethargic, show tremors, and have difficulty breathing.

BY DR. MINA YOUSSEF

WHAT TO DO If you aren’t sure whether the snake is poisonous, try to identify it. Take a picture if you can, but don’t put yourself at risk! Restrict your dog’s movement to slow the spread of the venom. If Fido was bitten on one of his legs, immobilize that leg. Do not incise the wound or apply a tourniquet. Ice is also a no-no. Instead, immediately take your canine pal to the nearest emergency animal hospital. Call ahead so the staff can prepare for your arrival. Luckily, with immediate care, Fido’s chances are good! 24

PREVENTION As with anything animal-related, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Keep your property free of debris piles, as dead branches and overgrown brush can make inviting habitats for snakes. When hiking with your dog, keep a close eye on him. Making sure Fido knows the commands to Stay and Come are crucial, and can actually save your pup’s life, as they allow you to keep your pooch safely away from snakes and potential snake hideouts. Do you have any questions about your dog’s care or behavior? Contact us, your San Antonio veterinary clinic, anytime! Dr. Mina Youssef, is the owner and the chief veterinarian at North Star Animal Hospital. He gradated from the University of Missouri in 2007; his dream to become a veterinarian was the most fulfilling achievement of his life. North Star Animal Hospital opened on 02/14/2014 and our mission is excellent service with passionate care to every pet as a family member. Educate pet owners on the health of their pets as well as their own and apply extraordinary care in a professional, affordable and timely manner.

WITH DR. KIRBY OF ALAMO HEIGHTS PET CLINIC

A: Weight gain can be a problem for many dogs, especially at middle age. First, a full exam and lab work (to include thyroid) by your veterinarian will rule out any underlying diseases. If okay, your veterinarian will discuss exercise and an appropriate diet (consider Metabolic Diet by Science Diet). You didn’t mention if there are any orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia that could limit more exercise and _____ weight loss. You should be able to work down the weight in a normal dog over 3.5 months safely.

A: Allergies are very common in our pets; you referenced cedar as one of them. Without testing we don’t know for sure what allergens the pet is susceptible to. Sometimes symptoms are associated with a certain period or season or symptoms can be food related. Antihistamines are generally ineffective, though we have had some luck with Zyrtec. Fatty acids are important, using them would be wise. Changing our environment or where we live is unlikely, bathing the pet weekly can help control allergens on the skin. Dr. Kirby graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1979 and earned his DVM in 1984. Dr. Kirby has been the owner and director of Alamo Heights Pet Clinic since 1997. His veterinary interests are surgery, internal medicine, ultrasonography, and rehabilitation therapy. He uses both a conventional and a holistic approach to medicine.
