adoptadogorcat The following pets are available from the Helotes Humane Society: Diego was found as a stray and picked up by good Samaritans. He had what appeared to be a large wound on his side. Upon further examination it was determined to be a skin cancer lesion. It was successfully removed and Diego recovered at the Helotes Humane Society. He is now completely healed and ready for adoption. Diego likes to be the leader of the pack. He would do best as the only dog.
Mimi was brought to us as a stray. She was very thin and her hair was balding due to fleas. She has been well cared for and is making a great recovery. She appears to be a border collie mix. We think she is young, maybe a year old. Mimi is a sweet girl and would love a new home where she can feel safe and loved. If you'd like to meet Mimi, please contact us at 210.422.6242. or info@hhsanimals.org
Briar Rose (a.k.a. Bree) is as sweet and friendly, playful and affectionate as can be. Once she gets to know you she is your best friend! But she came with apparently very scary experiences in her history and she has a very fearful nature. More fearful of men, a single woman may be her best adopter. We don't have experience with her with children, but we suspect she will get along with calm and respectful kids as well.
Adam is a sweet little Chihuahua who was found as a stray. No owner has ever come forward to claim him. He is about two years old and weighs 6 lbs. He has an "apple" head and long "deer" legs. Adam wants nothing more than to be the king of your castle becoming your forever companion. If you'd like to meet Adam, please contact us at info@hhsanimals.org or call 210.422.6242.
Bree is crate trained, house trained and playful with other friendly dogs. She is spayed, heart worm negative, fully vaccinated and current on all preventatives. She is about 1 year old and around 65 lbs. As she fills out she may be about 75 lbs at a healthy weight.
Dolly was found with her sister Ruby as a stray. Both girls were extremely thin and starving. Ruby has found her forever home and Dolly has recovered wonderfully! Dolly is a tall and strong girl. She is about 4 years old. She will need a large secure fenced yard and a confident owner. Dolly is very sweet natured, loves petting, treats and attention. She gets along well with dogs her own size. No cats.

t’s not difficult to recognize aggressive body language in a dog. At the San Antonio Humane Society, we believe pet education is key to making our community a more humane environment, and recognizing body language, whether it’s friendly or not, is a part of our curriculum.
BY SAHS COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATE; VERONICA ARAIZA, PHOTOS COURTESY OF SAMANTHA DELICATI
When should interaction with a dog be avoided? Snarling, growling, and hunched over dogs with a furrowed brow or muzzle should never be approached. This type of behavior may result from fear or anxiety, which can lead to aggression. It’s especially apparent if the dog is baring its upper and lower teeth. It can be confusing then when you get a dog like 5-year-old affectionately named Booger, whose favorite way of greeting everyone is hopping up on his hind legs and displaying all his pearly whites. Many canine behaviorists call this behavior a “submissive” or “mimic” grin. These “submissive” dogs may avoid eye contact, have squinty eyes, a low-hanging tail, laid back ears, or display fast-paced and over-exaggerated movements. It’s believed to be an inherited trait from the dog’s wild ancestors. Booger belongs to our Specialty Case Manager, Samantha Delicati. He’s a very friendly pooch with a head-turning grin. Although Booger’s behavior may have started as inherited passive submission, Samantha doesn’t believe his “smile” has anything to do with submission anymore. “I typically call it a smile,” she says, “His is such an extreme version of it… I just tell people he’s smiling because when they first meet him, they are so freaked out by what he’s doing.” 14
Although it can be a pretty alarming way to first meet a dog, it certainly was for the author of this article, visitors will soon find that Booger’s “smile” has little to do with either submission or aggression. After receiving so much positive attention (and affection) from staff, family, and friends for his characteristically unique smile, Booger has learned to don the grin quite often. Submissive grinning is not considered very common behavior. It’s important for individuals to recognize the differences between a dog displaying signs of aggression and a dog passively (or actively in Booger’s case) displaying harmless signs of submission or excitement. The takeaway here? Do your research. Sometimes dogs and cats with a “resting bully face” aren’t all that they seem, and when visiting a shelter or rescue, don’t always immediately judge a “grinning” dog by its cover. Veronica Araiza is the Communication Associate for the San Antonio Humane Society. She’s a UTSA graduate and is a native to San Antonio. She currently shares her home with her husband, her Belgian Malinois, Darwin, her Shiba Inu mix, Emma, and her 4-month-old kitten, Chewie.

ecently, a good friend (that has worked in the veterinary field for years) brought her family’s sick cat into the ER. The diagnosis was diabetes mellitus. As we went through the diagnosing and initial treatment, it made both of us realize that when it comes to our own pets, we are no different than any of our clients. So, if you have ever been the recipient of not-so-happy news from a veterinarian, maybe you have experienced the following:
RIVA HERON, DVM, EMERGENCY SERVICES DIRECTOR, MISSION PET EMERGENCY
DISBELIEF I reassured my friend at least ten different times that the diagnosis was correct. She kept saying that surely, surely there must be some mistake. Perhaps I had another cat’s bloodwork (nope……it was definitely her cat.) She knows me. She knows I’m a competent, caring veterinarian and that I wouldn’t tell her this unless I was convinced it was the right diagnosis. Neither of us can imagine the stress clients that have to hear this kind of information from me after only knowing me for about 15 minutes go through. So, when you tell me you want your veterinarian to review the lab work results, I understand. It’s a normal reaction and if we can reasonably wait to start treating your pet, I’ll tell you that. However, many ER cases cannot wait. That’s where a heavy dose of trust comes in. Talking with your family veterinarian about her recommendation for emergency care before you need it may help ease some of your fears. COST We have the advantage of knowing ER prices because see them every day. However, we too can have sticker shock when it is our own pet. My friend was stunned to find that the best insulin for her cat cost $275 a vial – and that was AFTER shopping around for the best price. Most of us are employees at the practices we work in, which means we are charged for services and medications (although many times there is an employee discount). Sometimes we have to choose between the care we want and the care we can afford, just as you do. Making that decision is difficult, so we understand if you have to make those decisions too. Know that we want to help you do the best you can for your pet when you face those financial challenges. Most of us have been there too. 16
WHAT You want me to do what????? My friend is an insulin-dependent diabetic. She understands better than most of us what diabetes is and how intensive treatment can be. However, facing up to what a commitment treatment is for her cat and getting her family on board was difficult. Giving injections every 12 hours to a feisty cat and changing to meal feeding instead of free feeding is a challenge. Especially when the other cats in the household also might not appreciate the feeding changes. I had to swear that this was the only plan that was likely to work and even then it took some time for the family to decide they could do this. This is where the ER staff and your family veterinarian can help you by giving guidance and support. We do not ask you to do anything that we have not seen other pet owners do. So, should you find yourself in the veterinary ER – remember that the people helping you and your pet really may have walked in your shoes! Dr. Riva Heron attended the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (’95) and is also a retired Naval Intelligence Off icer. She has practiced Small Animal Medicine in Virginia, Minnesota and Florida and Emergency medicine in San Antonio at I-10 Pet Emergency. halloweenpetsafety T hough many people get a thrill from the frightening masks and costumes on Halloween night, our pets are less likely to appreciate the spooky tradition. To ensure your pet’s safety this holiday weekend, follow these simple guidelines.
REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM TEXAS A&M
Collecting candy is one of the most well-known traditions of Halloween. We might appreciate the array of tastes in our assortment of candy, but is it safe to offer Fido a few bites? Dr. Stacy Eckman, clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, explained how candy can be harmful for pets. “For individual ingredients, chocolate is the biggest offender,” she said. “Dark chocolate is the most dangerous candy, followed by milk chocolate and white chocolate. Chocolate can cause vomiting and diarrhea, a rapid heart rate, tremors, seizures, and death. Other ingredients in candy can also be of concern, such as certain nuts and raisins.” Eckman added that most general candies primarily cause an upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting. In some cases, consuming candy like those containing the artificial sweetener xylitol, can lead to more significant diseases and even death in dogs and cats. To prevent your furry friends from consuming harmful candy, try storing the treats on a high shelf out of your pet’s reach. Other items that should be kept away from your pet include pumpkins, pumpkin seeds, corn, and electrical cords. These objects are a hazard if consumed or chewed on by your pet. If you suspect your pet has ingested harmful candy or other dangerous items, Eckman recommends contacting your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center (APCC). The APCC can be reached at (888) 426-4435. Halloween is most often defined by the famous tradition of wearing costumes. Your pet may look absolutely adorable wearing a princess gown or a Superman suit, but that does not mean they are enjoying the experience as much as you are. To determine if it is appropriate to dress your pet for Halloween night, Eckman recommended these helpful tips. “Make sure the costume is not covering the animal’s face (mainly their mouth and nose), so they can breathe properly,”
20
she said. “It is also important that the costume does not fit too tight around the neck. The costume should not make the animal too hot if it is warm out, and it should not trip them while running or walking. Lastly, costumes with lights and batteries are a safety hazard.” If you are planning on dressing your pet for Halloween, Eckman suggested dressing your pet in their outfit several times before the big party or event so they become accustomed to the fit. Animal cruelty is never acceptable, but Halloween is unfortunately a time when pranksters may steal, tease, injure, and even kill beloved pets. To protect your pets from cruel behavior, keep them inside or in a secure fenced in area or backyard. Black cats are especially at risk during Halloween, which is why they should be kept inside several days prior and after the holiday. You should also keep in mind that trick-or-treaters will be knocking on your door throughout the night, which may startle your pets. Dogs can be especially territorial, so it is important to keep them in another room so they do not bark or growl at guests. Proper identification is one of the most important factors in keeping your pet safe this Halloween. Human and vehicular traffic may frighten animals and cause them to run off from the safety of your home. If you are going to take your pet trick-or-treating with you, walk them on a leash and provide them with a reflective collar or tape so they are more visible at night. All pets need a collar with identification tags, and it is also recommended by Eckman to invest in a form of identification that cannot come off, such as a microchip. Halloween is a fun night for people of all ages, but it is important to remember that your pet may have a different perspective on the holiday. Keeping your pet’s safety in mind when planning parties and handing out candy is important, because nobody wants to spend Halloween night searching for a lost family member.

I want some tips on how to get my Sophie to stop jumping on visitors & peeing at the same time? Sophie's 5 months old. - Tina Ramirez When it comes to our dogs it’s important that we’re always their advocate! Whenever possible, you should politely ask your guests to wait until Sophie is sitting before they greet her. Since she’s a puppy, she’s learning how to socialize. More importantly, what’s appropriate and what isn’t! To help her learn to remain calm when greeting your visitors, you can also ask your guests to also stay cool and collected. (I know, it’s so hard not to squeal with excitement when you see an adorable dachshund pup in a dress!) Sophie will pick up on these social cues but she will still need your help to learn to follow them. I recommend having a leash on her so you can stand on it. If she does try to jump, the leash will prevent her from making contact. To help with her excitement urination, start limiting her water intake an hour before your guests arrive! If you continue to have problems even after you’ve tried this, I would consult a professional trainer! My 2 year old Great Dane all of a sudden has started eating out of the garbage and chewing on furniture, shoes, etc. Why would this behavior all of a sudden be happening? There has been no dramatic changes in our house or his life? Thank You so much. There are many reasons why a dog might suddenly start this type of behavior. Sometimes these changes can even be internal and specific to your dog. Since you’ve ruled out a major change, it could be a series of minor changes that are imperceptible to you such as slight decrease in his
{October 2016}
ability exercise due to the weather. In either case, the best thing you can do to remedy these destructive behaviors is to incorporate some structure into his life. Make sure you monitor him when you’re home, remove his access to the objects he’s chewing or eating, and make sure you’re setting clear and consistent boundaries. The best way to do all three of these things this is to introduce him to a kennel! There are many great resources online on how to do this. Just make sure it’s steady process with lots of rewarding. Never make the crate a punishment. If you continue to have problems even after he’s properly acclimated, I would consult a professional trainer.

Q: I recently saw a poisonous snake in my backyard (Copperhead). I am afraid to let my dog out in the backyard now. Is there any sort of preventative shot to give them against venomous snake bites? A: There is a rattlesnake vaccine available for dogs. It was developed to provide protection from the Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes and is most effective against that snake’s venom. Venom from other snakes such as Copperheads, Sidewinders, and Timber Rattlesnakes are similar to the Western Diamondback so they are covered by the vaccine also. The vaccine does not provide protection against Water Moccasins or Coral snakes. I recommend the vaccine for those dogs that will potentially have exposure to snakes. The first year your pet will receive an initial vaccine and a booster 4 weeks later. Afterwards, your pet will receive a yearly booster. Having your pet vaccinated with the rattlesnake vaccine does not mean that you do not have to seek medical attention if they do get bit. Being vaccinated just lessens the impact of the snakebite and reduces or eliminates the need for anti-venom.
Q: With the Zika scare, is there any harm to dogs and cats contracting the virus? A: At this time, there is no evidence that animals can contract the Zika virus. Currently there haven’t been any studies conducted on the matter. Taking steps to control the mosquito population in an around your home is always a good idea. There are pet safe yard sprays that kill/repel mosquitos and removing any standing/stagnant water around your home will prevent mosquito breeding. SAferalcatcoalition
National Feral Cat Day is October 16th Alley Cat Allies’ theme this year is All Cats, All Communities.
Due to our warm climate, kittens are born year-round here. San Antonio also has a high abandonment rate, so these two issues give us the dubious distinction of having one of the largest outside cat populations in the country. The San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition receives hundreds of calls from frustrated residents wanting us to come pick up kittens born in their yards, under their decks, sheds, and bushes. We encourage the callers to feed the mom so the kittens will be healthy and the mom will be easier to trap and spay once the kittens are weaned, at 5-6 weeks. Then there are two options: 1) bring the kittens inside once weaned and socialize them so they can be adopted, or 2) leave them outside to trap and fix once they are 3 months old, and continue to feed them. The 3rd option, of course, is to do nothing. Females can go into heat when they are only 4 months old, having their first litter at 6 months. Kittens having kittens. The cycle continues and quickly overwhelms the person, and then the entire neighborhood. (not a good option) Our mission is to help people get outside cats spayed and neutered so they don’t reproduce. We also run a small rescue/adoption program that 34
takes in young kittens and friendly strays. We are foster-based so the more fosters we have, the more cats and kittens we can pull from the streets. How can you help? Foster and Adopt! Kittens must be brought inside and handled by 8 weeks of age in order to become tame enough to get into an adoption program. Many more people are needed to do this! There is a small "window of opportunity" from when they are weaned at 6 weeks to being caught and brought inside to socialize at 8 weeks. As cats are adopted, fosters are able to back-fill from their homes, creating more space for us to go out and rescue more kittens. When no one adopts, we have gridlock and nothing moves. The kittens stay on the streets to reproduce - unless trapped and fixed. Are you feeding outside cats? Call us and we can help you get them fixed for free or low cost! Animal Care Services has a free voucher program now for outside cats. Our program has a class that provides instruction on how to trap cats, free trap loans, and for $20 the cats are sterilized and vaccinated against rabies. All cats are ear-tipped, the universal sign of a fixed outside cat. Call our Helpline to get info on both programs: 210-877-9067. Information is also on our website: www.sanantonioferalcats.org. We are your local, grassroots organization, dedicated to humanely reducing the outside cat population in San Antonio.
