ave you ever noticed your pet staring off into one corner of a room where there is nothing to see? Do you wake up in the middle of the night to your dog growling at what seems like nothing? Have you ever noticed that your pet doesn’t like a person they’ve just met, for no apparent reason?
BY MARIE CRABB
People of all cultures have speculated for centuries that animals can sense spirits or otherworldly occurrences. For many of us this begs the question: Do our pets have “extra sensory” perceptions that allow them to sense what we cannot, or are their primary senses so sharp that they are simply better at identifying noises, sights, smells that humans cannot perceive? According to a scientific journal published in London, The Royal Society, researchers studying the sight of animals speculate that cats and dogs alike have the ability to see Ultraviolet light which humans cannot perceive. The ability to see Ultraviolet light can serve a number of different survival purposes for animals, however for our pets, it just may explain why they stare at inanimate objects for extended periods of time. This means that our pets can literally see things humans cannot. So we know they see something, the question is what? Cats have an ability to hear up to 5 times the distance a human can hear as well as the ability to hear much higher frequencies than humans can. Dogs have the ability to isolate the sound they are focusing on by closing their inner ears. Dogs can rotate their ears so as to locate the direction from which the sound is emanating. This may also be why most dogs are not fans of thunderstorms (think of someone banging cymbals right next to your ears over and over). So naturally, when we are fast asleep, our animals are more adept at hearing things that go “bump” in the night. Dogs are known for their phenomenal super8
human sense of smell, which is their primary sense. Dogs have 220 million smell receptors available to identify their world (as opposed to our 5 million). It’s how they greet each other and how they send social messages. Dogs have been trained to sniff out all types of amazing things. Smell is so important to a dog that it is their primary evolutionary tactic for survival. So, it’s not difficult to see why this enhanced sense allows them to “sniff ” out things we cannot. A cat’s sense of smell, while keen, is comparatively less acute than a dog’s nose (but still better than a human’s). We live in a science driven society. Through research we now know that animals can “sense” a world completely outside of what we humans can see, hear and smell (thank goodness for that one). Whether or not our pets can sense the paranormal this question relies heavily on belief and is one best left to the reader’s determination. Good Luck Looking For The Great Pumpkin! t’s fall, and as cooler weather approaches, our four-legged friends are ready to hit the pavement—so you should be too! Daily walks are beneficial for you and your pet’s health, and while you’re hitting that cool concrete, be sure to zombie walk over to the San Antonio Humane Society’s annual Paws on the Patio event later this month, for costume contests, doggie dinners, and people-pleasing meals.
BY VERONICA ARAIZA
Before that awesome HowlO-Ween themed event takes place, make sure to celebrate National Walk Your Dog Week during the first week of October, as it was created to bring awareness to canine behavioral issues and obesity. Dogs crave exercise and activity, and satisfying these needs—even with just a 30-min walk—will benefit their physical and mental health. Although each breed may need a specific schedule or limit on their physical activity, walking your dog daily has numerous benefits for you and your furry family members: • Promotes Weight Management: According to the American Veterinary Medical Association about 17 million dogs in the United States are overweight. • Lessens Destructive Behavior and Hyperactivity: Behavioral issues such as aggression, destruction, or anxiety can create the misconception that some dogs are disobedient, when actually these pooches are just bored with energy to burn. • Reinforces Bond Between Pet & Owner: Spending quality time with your dog will increase trust and contentment within the relationship. • Encourages Socialization: Shy dogs will benefit from the exposure to neighbors and a change in scenery. • Benefits for Your Health: It’s a no-brainer: exercising your dog means exercise for you too. Dog owners are usually healthier than their dog-less counterparts—the catch? They walk! And when you’re done burning those calories doing what’s sure to become a daily habit, don’t feel any guilt for indulging in a little treat—it is October, after all. No tricks here, The San Antonio Humane Society’s annual Paws on the Patio event will be held Monday, October 26th at the Alamo Quarry Market. The event will take place at Canyon Café (255 E Basse Rd, 78209) from 4pm to 8pm. Costumes are highly encouraged for both you 10
and your dog, and while you’re dressed to impress, be sure to let your pup show off all their costumed glory in our “Howl-O-Ween” pet costume contest. With all those daily walks behind you both, your pooch will have no problem strutting down the runway to stardom. Contest entries are $5, and all proceeds benefit the care and shelter of our SAHS pets. The event will also feature three-course doggie dinners for only $10! And because we’re not spooky ghouls—at least not until the 31st—this three-course meal includes a scrumptious dessert. What’s Halloween without a little sweet treat? Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about our doggie owners. While your pets are chowing down, you’ll have the option of choosing between four delicious dishes priced at $14-$18. And remember, all proceeds from the doggie dinners will benefit the pets at your local San Antonio Humane Society. After those daily trots, you both deserve this! So, whether you’re watching the costumed runway or walking it, be sure to sit back, relax, and have a family meal with your furry member. Break out the wands, wigs, wings, and Velcro and join us! Visit SAhumane.org for more info and past event photos! Veronica Araiza is currently interning at the San Antonio Humane Society while she attends the University of Texas at San Antonio. what is up
withthatcat?!
O
ctober is Feral Cat Month, or more affectionately termed “Community Cat Awareness Month”. Community cats, as we have discussed in the past, is ANY freeroaming cat either tame or wild that does not have a singular door step that they call home and an owner that claims them as theirs. Community cats can therefore be the ones that come from nowhere and appear in your living room unannounced (don’t believe me? Check Facebook for the “not my cat” memes) OR the yowling fence-serenade at 2am who beats feet as soon as they see your silhouette.
BY DR. COURTNEY H. BRIDGEMAN, CHIEF VETERINARIAN, SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY
Although many community cats make a good living and are healthy and well, there are definitely infections and illnesses that can pop up from time to time. When you see a feral cat that doesn’t look “just right” walking down your street or you decide to help the city and felines by becoming an educated Trap-Neuter-Release participant, it’s important to know what you might be looking at. 1. Viruses: Viruses come in all shapes and forms and there are many that affect cats. While we OATS could focus an entire book on these viruses, we are just going to touch on it briefly here. a. The most important virus to mention in regards to animals without a “history” is RABIES. Rabies can affect all mammals, including humans of course, and is frequently fatal even with treatment. Luckily, it is not the easiest to transmit from animal to human. ANY animal that is “not quite right” should be handled with care. Rabies does not always appear like it does in the movies with foaming at the mouth and aggressive lunging, snapping, and snarling. Rabies can appear lethargic, drunk, etc. It is safest to assume that any animal that is behaving 12
oddly, without explanation, could have Rabies and therefore should be trapped without touching or picked up with gloves/towel and taken to a veterinarian. b. The major kitty viruses of note are Feline Leukemia, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), and Feline Herpes. It is important to note that all of these viruses are significant to the cats that they infect and can cause minimal to severe symptoms. A colony or neighborhood affected by outbreaks of these viruses can see dramatic illness. 2. Skin Issues: Another great infector of kitties is skin pathogens. A pathogen is anything that causes disease and in the case of skin, it can be bacteria, fungus, or parasites. a. Parasites are the most common skin ailment in street cats. We are all familiar with fleas. But most people who live with kitties in their home have never seen how bad a true flea infestation can get. Fleas cause intense itchiness, hair loss, and in some severe cases anemia. Many products exist to treat flea infestations. Some last a month. Others only as long as there are fleas on the animal. In some instances wounds on the neck, chest, and ears are mistaken for fight wounds, but are in fact self-inflicted wounds from scratching. Texas

Another dreadful parasite that affects the skin is mange. “Mange” in cats is generally caused by the mite sarcoptes and cheyletiella. Both cause excessive itching and hair loss. Sarcoptes is scabies and Cheyletiella is walking dandruff or lice. Both can be treated with Ivermectin, but to cure it completely can take multiple treatments and weeks.
caused by bite wounds from other cats. These things can be HUGE and very painful. They are difficult to treat if still intact and can make the kitty very ill. A sick cat should definitely been seen by a veterinarian. An abscess that has burst can be treated as an open infection, but only if it’s mild. 3. Respiratory Infection: There are several respiratory issues. The easiest to see is the upper respiratory infection (URI). A URI in cats is often caused by the Herpes virus. It’s dangerous in kittens but can be a big deal in adult cats that are immune BERLOIZ compromised. This looks like the common cold and can include weepy or crusty eyes or nose, nasal discharge, congestion, sneezing, etc. A lower respiratory tract infection is much more serious and much more insidious. Cats are excellent at hiding disease and none more so than life threatening pneumonia. If you find a cat that seems a little weak or thin, a vet visit is needed immediately as it indicates a much more serious condition.
b. Fungus is the next most common skin ailment in cats. Unlike in people or in dogs, Ringworm or Mycoplasma Canis does not take on a round standard appearance. Nor does it always begin with a spot of hair loss. So in cats, it can almost appear by magic overnight! The fungus, if spotted, often appears at the base of the hair as a tan crusty debris with a roughly round shape. noticed in Genesis the other day that God created the beasts before he created man. Perhaps that is why so many hold their pets so dearly in their hearts. October 4th marks the Blessing of Pets feast this year; and while I’m not of the Catholic faith, I firmly believe saints and angels watch over all God’s creatures.
Probably the most well-known of the Saints is St Francis of Assisi who considered these fellow creatures his brothers and sisters. One story recounts him giving up his very meager living quarters to a donkey; another to moving flocks of birds. Here in San Antonio, The St Francis of Assisi church holds their Feast/ Blessing of Pets on the 1st Sunday of October each year at 3:00 p.m. They welcome everyone to bring their loved ones (2 and 4-legged) to take part and enjoy the blessing and festival. Learn more at http://sfasat.org/ St. Kevin, of Ireland’s Glendalough, was a hermit priest from the 6th century who lived and prayed in a remote bee-hive hut until passing at the ripe old age of 120. Legend claims that a blackbird once laid an egg in his outstretched hand as he prayed. He carefully held it for days until it hatched. History is full of beautiful stories such as these. I was always a little hesitant to think that God had time to answer our prayers about the smallest among us but 2 months ago, my husband and I heard a mewling behind our rural home. We searched for hours, put out food but found nothing. For several days I was sick with fear about the coyotes as the crying became more desperate. Finally one evening we noticed a flash on our back porch. I opened the door and a tiny furball bolted across the lawn back into the trees. We immediately put food by the door but it was growing dark and she was making too much noise to be safe. It was a sleepless night. I finally fell to desperately
praying that she would find the food in order to keep quiet so nothing would harm her. Within 5 minutes she was back on the porch bobbing her little head around until she found the pile of food. Another day passed before Mark coaxed her close enough to catch. We named her Memphis Belle after siblings Mustang, Spitfire, and Piper. Mark and I were discussing my answered prayer weeks later because I still wasn’t sure who answered it when Mark pointed out that it could have been his mother, Neli. She led a full life of rescuing not just dogs and cats but bears, squirrels and even one time, a flock of baby Canadian geese that she taught to fly. Neli passed away in 2006 but when Mark reminded me that everyone called her Neli-Belle we realized, she was our little Belle’s angel. I’m sure we’ve all had an angel or two deliver a helpless animal into our hands. We’re here for many reasons and I am so grateful for the St. Francis’, St. Kevins and Nelis in our lives who give us a little nudge of comfort along this journey.

the modern
veterinarytechnician O
ver the last 15 years, the veterinary technician profession has changed from the person who just takes a temperature of your dog, to a highly skilled individual that is performing a wide range of procedures from administering and monitoring anesthesia to placing epidurals. This is a big change from what the veterinary technician was like in the past. The modern veterinary technician is now more trained in a variety of areas than ever before and is an extremely valuable team member for the veterinary profession.
BY DR. OLGA JAIMEZ
So what makes up the modern veterinary technician? There are different levels of technician positions that are available to one who wants to join this PALO ALTO STUDENTS: BRITTANY & KATIE IN community of SURGICAL LAB animal caregivers. These levels range from the LVT to the technician assistant. The licensed veterinary technician (LVT) is trained and educated through either a college or university. The technician and technician assistants are often individuals who are trained on the job. Online certification courses are available for the technicians to advance or add to their skills. How does one become an LVT? There is a 2-year program right here in San Antonio, at Palo Alto College. Students that enroll in the Veterinary Technology Program will earn an associate degree. These students have gone through rigorous courses to learn their craft and will take a national, as well as a state veterinary technician board exam to become licensed. The LVT is trained to perform a wide range of procedures from suturing, urinary catheter placement, CPR, dentistry to anesthetic procedures. After completing the program, the LVT has many options to pursue. For example, we have graduates that have obtained job positions in our area clinics and referral/emergency hospitals, have become instructors and tutors at Palo Alto College, have become hospital administrators, and some even work for several of our area labs and research facilities. Further options include large animal medicine, to becoming the new program director of the Palo Alto College Veterinary Technology program, as one local LVT accomplished this summer. LVTs may also choose to specialize and become boarded in a particular discipline 16
like dentistry, surgery, large animal or anesthesia. Veterinary technicians are the backbone of any clinic, shelter, lab/ research facility, or college. Technicians work hard to BENJAMIN MATHEW, LVT AND keep your pet KRISTIN HAGOPIAN, LVT happy, healthy, and cared for whether they are hospitalized or an outpatient. They often work long hours for less pay than their counter-part physician assistants and nurses on the human side. Despite the monetary discrepancy, the modern veterinary technician loves animals and uses their training and education to help our beloved pets. October is Veterinary Technician Month, so remember your technician during this month. Let your veterinary technician know that they are a greatly appreciated member of the veterinary community. Dr. Olga Jaimez graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1992. She has over 20 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery. Dr. Jaimez opened 4 Paws Animal Hospital in 2005. In addition, to her clinical practice, Dr. Jaimez is a full time instructor @ Palo Alto College, Veterinary Technology Program. She enjoys giving back to the community by sponsoring family fun events like the 4 Paws Howl-o-ween Costume Contest and the Fiesta 4 Paws Pet Pageant.

amputation: don't panic!
F
or any pet owner, getting the news that your dog or cat might need to have a limb amputated can be scary and overwhelming. When the owners of Champ, a 10-year-old Golden Retriever, discovered that their boy had bone cancer and needed an amputation as soon as possible, it was devastating. They went through a variety of emotions, but after discussing the pros and cons with a board-certified surgeon, ultimately decided to move forward with the amputation.

why are veterinarians
fascinatedwithpets’feces? W
hether your veterinarian calls it a “fecal sample” or “stool specimen”, pet owners often wonder why their animal doctors have such a fascination with something that should be left in the backyard or litter box. As it turns out, checking your pets’ feces just might keep the people in your family from getting seriously sick! It might be the look on the person’s face or maybe the way they are carrying the bag, but staff at a veterinary office can always tell when their clients arrive with a stool sample for testing. Dozens of specimens arrive each day, some in Ziploc baggies, others triple wrapped in aluminum foil and some are tucked neatly in plastic containers. The clients may not realize it, but that smelly sample brought in for testing may help prevent an illness in their pet…or in them! Why does your veterinarian have such an interest in your pet’s stool? The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) state that 3,000 to 4,000 human serum samples are sent to their labs every year with a presumptive diagnosis of toxocariasis, or, infection with roundworms or hookworms. The illnesses caused by these parasites are not reportable in the United States, so true numbers of human cases are not known. What is known is that 36% of dogs across the country and 52% in the southeastern states carry these zoonotic worms. Many pet owners are unaware that their furry family members are capable of harboring these parasites. Some clients don’t believe that their pet could have worms. But, pets can come into contact with these parasites in the yard, in potting soil, at the dog park or even on our hands or feet after we come inside from working in the garden or after taking a walk. The larva and eggs of these parasites are simply abundant in many places. In fact, a single female worm can shed more than 100,000 eggs per day and most puppies and kittens are infected with more than just one worm! That’s millions of eggs spreading through areas where dogs
and cats go to defecate. Pets infected with a protozoan parasite, like coccidia or giardia, can shed over a billion cysts each and every day! Most people understand that veterinarians are checking fecals as a means to find intestinal parasites, more commonly known as “worms”. What is less well known is that the veterinarian is not looking for whole adult parasites. They are looking for microscopic eggs and protozoans that may inhabit your pet. Any positive specimens are discussed with the veterinarian and an appropriate deworming medication can be prescribed. These tests are an important part of a veterinarian’s dedication to your pets, but also to public health as a whole. The CDC, the Companion Animal Parasite Council and the American Animal Hospital Association all recommend regular fecal testing for all pets. Dr. James Peterson is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He began his career in Emergency Veterinary Medicine in San Antonio, and has practiced both Emergency and Small Animal Medicine in San Antonio for over 20 years. He is currently a director of Mission Pet Emergency in Northwest San Antonio and owns Hill Country Animal Hospital & The Palms Pet Resort in Helotes, TX.

When she finally gets home, she spends her evening lounging on her soft, plush bed and relaxing with her family. Hades spends her days at work with Jonathan, who is the owner and head trainer at San Antonio Dog Training Co. Hades is a master of her craft and loves to show all of Jonathan's training dogs how sits, downs and heels should be done. Always pushing herself to learn more, she also has mastered jumping through hula hoops, opening mailboxes, bobbing-and-weaving through Jonathan's legs and retrieving objects from the floor. Hades favorite part of the day is puppy play-time, when she gets to frolic and play with all of her doggie friends who have come to "school" to learn better behavior.

ades is an intelligent and outgoing Giant Schnauzer who loves to show off all of her obedience skills at San Antonio Dog Training Co. Over 3 years ago, her owners Jonathan and Phoebe King, were searching for a dog who would be the perfect family dog, a life-long friend for their upcoming bundle of joy, as well as a dog who would excel in obedience training. Their search lead them to a breeder in Tennessee where they found a rambunctious puppy who would be the perfect addition to their family. Later that year, another family addition arrived and Hades has since been inseparable from her human brother. Hades favorite activity is playing fetch with her brother, who is an active toddler and has nearly as much energy as she does. She also enjoys going to parks throughout San Antonio to play frisbee with her owners; she certainly has never met a frisbee she won't chase to the ends of

Meet Rosebud. She came in for her grooming appointment to K9 Country Club & Training Academy matted and tangled. Her family had previously shaved her, and the little girl cried when she saw her; they did not want to shave her all the way down again, but understood it may be necessary. They wanted her shorter, all one length, but still slightly fuzzy. After spending a lot of time and effort, the groomer was able to remove and or loosen the matting enough to leave Rosebud's hair about 1/4 inch long, instead of shaving her to the skin. It was also possible to leave a small amount of fluff on her ears, and most of her tail was salvaged. While the cut was still a little shorter than desired, the family was ecstatic that Rosebud was not bald (and no tears were shed). Rosebud's family was given instructions on how to avoid matting in the future and what tools to use at home between grooming. Q: My chow mix was running outside and broke a nail. It bled for a while and then stopped. Do I need to bring him in to the vet? —Thanks, Jenny A: A broken nail usually is okay, it depends on where it is broken. If the nail is still present, have your vet remove it, (typically done with light sedation). If necessary, antibiotics may be prescribed. A nail broken at the base that is already gone and has stopped bleeding can be cleaned with water and checked daily until healed. If there is swelling of the toe have your veterinarian examine it.
A: I have yet to see intestinal inflammation cases associated with deer, elk or moose antlers. The concern for me with antlers, rawhides and hooves are choking and breaking teeth. I always tell owners to monitor their pets when giving a hard chew. Once the pet has chewed the item down to a piece that can be easily swallowed, take it away and throw it out. Before purchasing any antler or chew, do a little online research and find a brand that is highly rated and does not split or splinter.
