Q: Is it advisable to do cateratic eye surgery on a 13 year old dog? A: I preface answering this question with making sure you have a conversation with your opthamologist always. If your pet is in good shape, bloodwork, exam, urinalysis, radiographs are all within normal limits surgery could then be an option. We must always remember that surgery carries risk, loss of life or increased visual loss. There are many dogs that live with blindness and do quite well. Post operative complications are more prevalent in dogs than people. The medicine used post operatively requires time and effort for a long period of time. Again, look very closely at pros and cons, collaborate with your veterinarian and ophthalmologist. Q: We are looking to get a swimming pool in our backyard. How do we know if our dog will be able to swim?

A: Most dogs can swim though some like bulldogs cannot. Aging dogs must be watched closely around

pools, never to be alone. A shallow area of the pool should always be available for your dog to escape if needed. Teaching a dog to swim is easy. Some dogs will watch others and catch on quickly while others require help and support from their owners in shallow water to allow the typical dog paddle till the pet is comfortable. For bulldogs, life jackets are great and protect them. Always remember there are dogs that do not like water and may never swim. Have fun swimming with your dogs and be safe always.

ou hear it more and more frequently nowadays. Whether it’s people having children later in life or not having children at all, it’s becoming more socially acceptable to just admit it: kids aren’t for everyone. And you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that goes for our pets too.

BY VERONICA ARAIZA, COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATE, SAHS

Whether we’re talking about people or animals, there is no such thing as a one-sizefits-all personality. It’s just as foolish to say “all Labradors love kids” as it is to say “all women love poodles.” It’s just not true. Preferences vary and, especially for dogs and cats, they’re largely based on needs and past experiences. At the San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS), as with most shelters, we try our best to tailor the outcome of every adoption to ensure each pet goes to the right home. This includes setting some restrictions. “No Children Under 12” What does it mean? Basically, due to relevant history or behavior, we believe the pet would do better in a home without young children. It can be a scary phrase, but it can mean a variety of things! Some cats like to confuse fingers for toys. Some dogs like to jump, push, and play roughly. Some cats really don’t appreciate being cuddled. And some dogs don’t forget who it was that pulled their tail and ears when they didn’t know any better. We get it. Interacting with dogs and cats is a learning experience. Heck, we have a whole summer/spring camp dedicated to just that! Some children (and adults for that matter) don’t know how to properly approach or connect with dogs and cats, and this can sometimes result in dogs and cats who do not know how to properly approach or connect with children. It’s fine: kids 12

aren’t for everyone. If you’re ever curious about an adoptable pet with an age restriction, don’t immediately count them out. It’s always beneficial to do your research and learn more about each pet’s history. Staff members and volunteers always hold a wealth of information on the pets they care for! Age restrictions can be due to a pet’s reactivity towards other pets, high activity level, health reasons, or other observed behavior shared with us by previous owners, rescues, or staff. Don’t let a pet’s restrictions scare you away and never be afraid to ask: it’s an opportunity to receive a little education! Kids aren’t for everyone, and some dogs and cats aren’t for everyone too. But they may just be the one for you. See pets available for adoption at the SAHS at SAhumane.org/adopt. Veronica Araiza is the Communication Associate for the San Antonio Humane Society. She is a recent graduate from UTSA and is a native to San Antonio. She currently shares her home with her Belgian Malinois, Darwin, and Shiba Inu mix, Emma.

braceyourself! your pet may need an orthodontist! W

hy would anyone put braces on a dog or cat? Is that even a thing? First, let’s be clear that this is not a service provided solely for cosmetic purposes. Some cats and dogs have genetic or acquired malocclusions (upper and lower teeth in an incorrect relationship) that make it painful for them to even close their mouths. If we can move some of their teeth rather than extract them, it may be better for the animal in the long term. 1.

The right lower canine tooth is contacting and penetrating the palate when the mouth is closed

3.

The incline plane is attached to the upper teeth in order to move the lower canine.

BY MJ REDMAN, DVM, DAVDC

This dog was born with what is called a “base narrow canine”. That means that the lower canine is positioned vertically so that it contacts the upper jaw. In some dogs, this can occur on both sides at the same time. Because dogs have such long, pointed canine teeth, base narrow canines can put a lot of pressure on the palate. If left untreated, this malocclusion can result in pain, infection, oronasal fistula (holes through the roof of the mouth into the nose) and sometimes loss of upper teeth. Ideally, every puppy and kitten should have their occlusion evaluated when they are young. If problems like this are addressed at an early age, before the adult teeth erupt, they can sometimes be cured with minimal effort and expense. If the adult teeth are affected, a simple orthodontic device called an “incline plane” can be affixed to the upper teeth. When the dog closes their mouth, the incline plane tips the lower canines out into the correct position. Once the teeth have moved, the incline plane is removed. In this dog’s case, the orthodontic movement was accomplished in about two months. 14

2.

This has resulted in a hole in the roof of the mouth. Fortunately it does not communicate with the nose

4.

Two months later, the right lower canine is no longer contacting the palate.

Dr. MJ Redman is the board-certified veterinary dental specialist at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency and is the only in the San Antonio area. Prior to joining MissionVet in 2014, Dr. Redman owned Pacific Animal Dentistry, a mobile veterinary dentistry practice based near Seattle where she provided advanced dental services on a referral basis to local small animal hospitals. She then spent three years working in a practice limited to dentistry and oral surgery at the Animal Dental Center located in Maryland, a busy 3-doctor practice focusing solely on dental procedures including complex oral surgery. Dr. Redman has extensive experience treating a variety of oral pathologies including periodontal disease, fractured teeth and jaws, malocclusions, stomatitis, masticatory myositis, gingival hyperplasia, cleft palates and oral neoplasia.

Q: I'm about to have a baby. What is the best way to introuduce him to my fur baby?

A: Congratulations on the new addition to the family! The best way to introduce a new family member to your dog is going to first be with his smell. Bring home baby blankets for your dog to smell and get used to. Let your dog sleep with the blankets so they can get constant exposure to the new smell they will be encountering when your baby comes home. Another way to help get your dog get used to your baby's smell is to run his hands or even his feet through your dog's kibble before meal time. Once your baby is home, start the introduction process by taking a walk as a family. Walking together as a family helps show your dog that your baby is now a part of the pack and it is just a normal part of their routine. Be sure that when you are not able to directly supervise your dog and baby together, you use baby gates or a crate for your dog to keep everyone safe. Also, start setting clear boundaries now to teach your dog to be respectful of your baby's space by making it a rule that your dog is not allowed to interact with the baby unless they are invited. Remember to always watch your dog when they are interacting with your baby. If you see your dog becoming uncomfortable with the situation at any time, help them take a time out away from the baby. These tips will help you have a smooth transition and help your dog adjust to this big change! Congratulations again and good luck!

A: Great question! It is very important for our senior dogs to still exercise to help keep their hearts, joints, and muscles strong and healthy! And, just like humans, exercise can boost your dog's mood! Every dog is different and you will want to consider your dog's age, breed, and any specific health is-

When I was growing up, my family never had dogs so when I got older, I didn't waste any time getting a dog of my own. Having my own dog sparked my passion for dogs and I have since expanded my dog family. When I realized the kind of relationship I have with my dog by building trust and respect through training, I knew I had to become a trainer so I could help others experience the same bond. Now, I get to help people communicate with their dogs effectively and they get to enjoy their dogs more!

Q: My dog just turned 13 and I want to keep her young. What is the best type of exercise and recommended frequency for an older dog?

sues to determine the right exercise level for them. Daily strolls through your neighborhood are a great way to give your dog physical exercise and let them use their nose to smell the world around them! Depending on your dog, you may even be able to play a game of fetch by keeping the ball low and not throwing it too far. Swimming is also a great way to give your dog a full-body workout but with low impact to their joints. It's also a great way to fit in exercise in the hotter months! While physical exercise is important, don't forget to give your dog mental stimulation too! Giving your dog toys where they have to work to get their food out or even hiding their food around your house and letting them hunt for it works out their brain! Mentally challenging our dogs is important to keep their minds sharp and, balanced with adequate physical exercise, will help your dog stay happy and healthy!

dogtraining the gift that keeps on giving

W

hether you plan on getting a new puppy for Christmas or just want Fido to finally nail the “sit” command in time for your relatives to arrive, it is never too late to begin training your dog. Here are some tips for having a wellbehaved pooch just in time for the holiday season.

REPRINTED WITH PERMISION FROM TEXAS A&M

“The first few commands are usually basic obedience commands such as sit, down, stay, walking on leash, and most importantly, to come when called,” said Elizabeth Bachle, a technician at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences pharmacy and an agility instructor at Puppy Love training. “These are a great foundation to training more complex behaviors and can keep your pet out of harm’s way.” New puppy owners often get caught up in the excitement of having a four-legged friend to play with and forget that training them early on is most effective. However, don’t believe the saying that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Even your loyal, more seasoned companions can improve on current techniques or learn new skills. “Training your dog not only rewards good behaviors, but can also prevent unwanted behaviors before they begin,” said Bachle. “I would highly encourage new puppy owners to attend a group class to socialize and create a strong foundation of learning, but dogs of all ages benefit from a new challenge.” During training, it is important to use positive reinforcements when they’re showing progress. Rather than punishing Fido for all the things you don’t want him to do, concentrate on teaching him what you do want him to do. When your dog does something good, convince him to do it again by rewarding him with a treat or a nice, long tummy scratch. 18

“One of the most important decisions you can make for your dog is the training method you decide to use at home or in group classes. There are many methods out there but I highly encourage the use of positive reinforcement techniques, such as clicker training, and discourage the use of punishment when training any dog,” said Bachle. “Punishment can have a lot of negative effects, including fear, aggression, or distrust, while reinforcement is effective, builds confidence, and makes training fun for you and your dog!” If you’ve tried training them one-on-one at home but seem to be getting nowhere, training classes can be a great alternative. Providing them with the opportunity to interact with other dogs and their owners in group classes can be a great way to socialize and expose your dog to new situations and distractions in a safe environment. “The foremost benefit of group classes is the guidance and knowledge of an experienced instructor to help troubleshoot, advise, and assist you to accomplish your training goals,” said Bachle. “Many trainers offer private lessons and behavior solutions in the case that you need more individualized help.” Most importantly, remember to be patient. Like children, dogs have short attention spans and learn at all different paces. If done with patience and persistence, training your new puppy or faithful Fido can be an enjoyable bonding experience for you both. Having a well-behaved dog will be a gift that keeps on giving this holiday season. The great escape.
