any pet owners seek natural, chemical free cleaning options as they worry about how the chemicals used in everyday cleaning products may be negatively affecting their pets. Here are three pet friendly alternative cleaning solutions that could help you reduce the chemical exposure to you and your pets at home. White Vinegar White vinegar is a cornerstone for many other natural cleaning products and it seems like vinegar is useful for just about everything around the home. Think of white vinegar as the “goddess” of natural cleaning products. A prime reason being that it has very high acidity so it can dissolve many types of other organic substances. Vinegar is effective in killing bacteria and excellent in neutralizing the alkaline found in pet urine. Pre-mixing water and white vinegar for cleaning around your pet areas can be a good idea, so that it’s easily accessible in case of an accident. It’s safe for pets as it does not contain any chemicals and it’s inexpensive. A tip to help make white vinegar smell a little less “vinegar-ish”: Squeeze some fresh orange or fresh lemon juice to your mixture. Some added benefits of lemon juice are that the enzymes it contains naturally break down organic substances.
BY MARIE CRABB
Baking Soda Baking soda can be used in conjunction with vinegar when you are cleaning a pet “affected” area; although vinegar is great at breaking down the bacteria & neutralizing the smell – it has a smell of its own. Sprinkling some baking soda around the area you’ve treated with the white vinegar & water mixture and letting it sit for a couple of hours prior to vacuuming should lighten the vinegar smell. Baking soda is also a very mild abrasive, which helps when scrubbing pet stains off hard surfaces. Additionally, mixing baking soda with a little water, vinegar or salt can make a pet safe paste that you can clean your dog or cat dishes with. 8
Hydrogen Peroxide This “oxygen water” compound has no toxic byproducts after use and is well known as a disinfectant, a bleaching agent and an oxidizer which is a great trifecta for a non-toxic cleaning solution for pets. Because it is a mild bleach, exercise caution if you apply it to any type of carpeted area. It can be added in to wash your pet beds and blankets along with some white vinegar. You can also use hydrogen peroxide to clean out the stale odor from your kitty litter boxes. Empty the litter, pour some hydrogen peroxide in the box & let it sit for a while (in an area where your pets can’t mess with it), then scrub the box and rinse thoroughly. One important thing to note about this solution is that some veterinarians recommend it as a vomit inducing agent if your pet has ingested something toxic (this should only be done at the advice of your veterinarian). Happy Cleaning! Marie Crabb is a San Antonio native and animal rescue advocate with 8 furkids of her own, plus numerous rescue fosters. She is a Realtor with Exquisite Properties, has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from St. Mary’s University and is a trained Mediator.

ringringring goes the school bell
D
o you hear ringing in your ears? No, it’s not the sound of the water you’ve spent the entire summer in, but the sound of the summer rolling to a close and school starting up again. For many, school is already in session, but for some, it’s just about to start. For human families with children, this change initiates hustle and bustle, busy coming and going of the entire family. For the family pets, this change means quiet. It means alone time. And generally lots of it.
BY DR. COURTNEY H. BRIDGEMAN, CHIEF VETERINARIAN, SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY
Back to school can be quite stressful for family pets that may have gotten quite used to a summer of “pack togetherness” while the kids or whole family were together for large parts of the day. Recognizing the changes from your pet’s perspective and how they can affect his or her behavior might head off some pretty poor behaviors. First, let’s look at the change from your pet’s perspective. Summer means lots of time for the kids at home, or in the backyard playing. Lots of downtime on the living room floor watching TV or playing video games, or curled on TINKERBELL the couch with a good book. If your pet is an active part of your family, they probably played a huge part in these activities, running and playing or curling up with the kids. Now the kids are back in school. They often leave early in the morning and are gone until the afternoon, unless, like many, extracurricular activities keep them out late. Fido is now home, alone, for a huge portion of his day. A grown up might think, “Phew! Some time to myself! I can get back to those hobbies or chores I wanted to get done but couldn’t while the kids were
here….” But your pet thinks “What did I do wrong? Why did they leave me alone?” Dogs are pack animals. They are designed for and NEED companionship. This sudden apparent rejection or casting out of the pack (the whole pack leaves and they are made to stay behind) can be very confusing. This is especially true for a dog or puppy that may have been acquired as part of the summer festivities. An older dog may have become used to the rhythm of the seasons, but for those new this change sends them for a loop. Dogs encountering the back to school phenomenon for the first time may lash out in a variety of different ways including: • regression in potty training • destructive chewing to home and property • digging or escape activity • barking or howling • excessive energy and regression of obedience training The best way to prevent these problems is to think ahead. If your dog has been through the

oes your dog drink excessive amounts of water and urinate more than usual, even if it’s not hot outside? There are many reasons why this may be happening, but the most common in dogs are diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and hyperadrenocorticism (in dogs), or hyperthyroidism (in cats). In this article, we will discuss hyperadrenocorticism in dogs primarily, as it is extremely rare in cats.

doggieplaycare a trainer’s tips on
BY IRMA BICE
W

hen I first began training 20 years ago, doggie playcare wasn’t a popular service in this part of the country. Now, we understand the significance of properly socializing our dogs.
As owners, we have complete control over what we expose our pets to. How can we expect them to know how to interact in situations they are unfamiliar with? Dogs are very capable of adapting their behaviors when given the right guidance in the right environment – which is just what doggie playcare offers. It’s not uncommon to hear, “My dog doesn’t know how to play with other dogs.” Social behaviors are learned behaviors. When puppies play together they let each other know when a playful bite turns into: “Hey, that doesn’t feel good!” In that social situation, something useful has been learned – Bite inhibition. Supervised group play is also useful in teaching things like impulse control and how to regulate emotions (much like children acquire these skills in daycare or play groups). For wary dogs, a controlled environment is a great place for confidence building. It provides the opportunity to feel secure in their surroundings and encourages them to step out of their comfort zone. Playcare is practical too. It’s a great place for a dog to get exercise and burn off excess energy! We realize that every dog has a different personality. Some dogs are highly social and active. Others, would rather spend their day lounging with a human pal (which is perfectly acceptable). To create the most constructive playcare environment, dogs should be separated by both size and play style. Playcare personnel should be able to read body language and
know how to interrupt and redirect undesirable behaviors. To promote a safe setting, they should provide an appropriate dog to person ratio – this also encourages more one-on-one human interaction. The staff should work on basic obedience commands and reinforce good behaviors in a variety of circumstances. Personally, the most gratifying part of the doggie playcare experience is ending up with dogs that are calm and tired and owners who are happy to go home with their dogs. Irma Bice is the Training and Playcare Director for the Palms Pet Resort & Spa. She has over 20 years of experience working with dogs as: a breeder, an obedience competitor, conformation exhibitor and trainer. Throughout her eight years of teaching obedience and behavioral classes she has worked with all breeds and temperaments including aggression. Irma is a CPDT-KA, an AKC CGC evaluator, a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, a member of the American Treibball Association and a founding member of San Antonio Pet Trainers Alliance.

knew from a very young age working with animals was what I was meant to do, but I had no idea my love for them would lead me on such an amazing journey. I worked my way through college as a vet technician and received a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from the University of West Florida. After college, I continued my passion for working with animals as a Store Director for a major Pet Store chain up and down the East Coast. From there, my family relocated to Texas and I began to focus on my life dream of opening a pet boutique and bakery, a store BEDS COLLARS AND LEASHES that carried unique and quality pet items and freshly baked treats for four legged friends. My dream came true on December 15, 2011, as Fetch & Friskers opened in Leon Springs and again,
two years later, as the second store opened its doors on Main Street in Boerne. Shortly after, Fetching Fur-ever Families, our non-profit animal rescue, opened and began welcoming furry friends in need of a home from Kendall County. Not only do I have the blessing of improving the lives of pets and the people who love them, I also have the opportunity to help find “furever” homes and families for animals who need just that. Dreams do come true!

A: Yes, Actually Lyme disease in dogs has been diagnosed in all states. Lyme disease is caused by a spirochete (bacteria like organism) and spread by deer ticks. A dog or person can be infected by the bite of the nymph or mature tick, especially if attached for 48 hours. Symptoms in dogs include fever, increased lymph node size, lameness or joint swelling, and sometimes a decrease in appetite. Your veterinarian can test for tick diseases with appropriate bloodwork, and then he/she will discuss treatment with doxycycline for 30 or more days. Most resolve without issue while there can be a few that become chronic in nature. In some cases of Lyme disease there
Q. Do you recommend giving pigs ears to your dogs? A: I’m not fond of pig ears though they can be given in moderation. There is a concern about salmonella contamination with them. Also, make sure the pig ears are processed in the USA. They are not good for overweight dogs and dogs with history of pancreatitis. Remember to always supervise so your dog does not swallow too much or choke. Dr. Kirby graduated Cum Laude from Texas A&M with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1979 and earned his DVM in 1984. ast August we introduced the Texas Dogs & Cats Magazine readers to Sugar, a young Terrier mix who came into the San Antonio Humane Society with wounds on her mouth and front paw. Our Chief Veterinarian, Dr. Bridgeman, took a unique holistic approach to treating Sugar’s wounds using honey. According to a study in New Zealand, honey acts as an antibacterial agent producing hydrogen peroxide when mixed with the body’s response. This form of treatment was very successful and once Sugar was available for adoption, she soon found an incredible family to call her own.
BY FELICIA NIÑO
When the Dougherty family came to the San Antonio Humane Society they were drawn to her calm demeanor and sweet personality. After a nice walk in our courtyard and a visit with our adoption staff, Sugar was on her way to her new home. Her family says, “She is the light of our morning, and afternoon, and night. We couldn’t imagine our lives without her precious face.” She is now known as Lucy Belle and has a 14 year old Jack Russell sister named Trixie Belle. They are the best of friends and enjoy going on their daily walks together. Two guinea pig siblings, Ramon and Violet, are also in the mix and Lucy gets a kick out of watching and listening to them in their habitat. Lucy is blessed to have so many friends!

way to the water bowl, hesitantly. She slowly started to drink, and as soon as the water bottle gurgled, she ran off like a shot! She just got spooked by the gurgling noises. Since then we have removed the 5 gallon jug from the top, but she still refuses to drink from it.” After receiving the wonderful photos and updates, our SAHS staff were thrilled to know that Lucy is enjoying her life and is so happy with her forever family. We encourage those who have adopted a pet from the SAHS to send their Success Story to successstories@sahumane.org. Not only do we love to read them, but many of our followers on Facebook and Twitter (@sahumane) enjoy them as well. Your story may touch someone’s life, the way Lucy’s touched ours!
Here’s a cute story her family shared with us: “She loves to prance and leap, but the funniest is that we got our pooches an auto refill watering station. We noticed early on that she would go outside and drink water, but never inside. We couldn’t figure out why she wouldn’t drink from the inside bowl for anything. One afternoon it was raining and we had been playing inside with her, she was thirsty but refused to go outside, because more than not wanting to drink from the bowl, she really doesn’t like the rain. Eventually she made her
