LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER This Christmas issue is the "Cat’s Meow." Our cover model is the adorable Sinatra, the house cat for The Ark Pet Hospital. We also have a fun article about the newest concept-kitty cafes. Another new pet concept that we welcome to San Antonio is the Pooch House on Wheels. The first mobile pet boutique to hit the streets of SA. Be on the lookout for that truck of Fido’s couture. The one aspect of the Holiday season that many of us dread is the infamous cedar allergy season that starts this month. Dr. Patricia Dinger’s article explains how to determine if your sneezing is pet related or cedar related. Take a glance at our Pupparazi section for highlights of this Fall’s pet events around town. Hope you and your furry loved ones have a wonderful “howl”iday season and a “purr”fect 2015!
Sincerely,
Dana Raimondi

DOGGIE STYLEZ
about our
covermodel Sinatra
BY DARREN HUBENAK, D.V.M.
I arrived at my office one morning to the wide-eyed look of my staff at The Ark Pet Hospital off of Blanco Road in San Antonio. You see, my employees know my strong opinion for people that abandon pets, and they didn’t want to start my day with bad news. Someone had left a small, sickly kitten in a box by our front door. My reaction was typical as I started pondering the different avenues I could take to remedy the situation and ranting about personal responsibility, inconveniencing other people, how I’m not a 501c3, etc. Still, I opened the box to see a tiny white ball of fluff staring up at me with big blue eyes and a weak attempt of a meow. I could tell immediately that something was wrong. This kitten had a terrible tremor when it tried to move. The epidemiologist in me screamed, “He’s got rabies!” I looked around the room at my staff…. I was getting “the” look. They knew what I wanted to do, and “the” look I was getting told me that I’d be quarantining this little kitten for two weeks instead. I’d have to wait for my answer. Well, after 2 weeks and on further inspection, it was determined that the cause of this kitten’s shaky head was not from rabies, but from a polyp growing in his ear that lead to a severe infection. A minor surgery and some antibiotics later, and this little kitty was doing much better! With his blue eyes, his whitish hair and his bobbing head, the name “Sinatra” was suggested, and it stuck. Now, my 3 young daughters visit the office often and have a tendency to fall in love with pets they see more than once. (We have a guinea pig at home named Midnight because we have guinea pig named Midnight that stays with us often at the clinic.) The same was true for Sinatra, and he quickly was brought into the fold of the Hubenak household. Our family has a history of giving pets long names. My wife’s cat was “Baby Midnight Pepper Kit-Kat Doodles Ann”. Yes, all those names for one cat. Plain old “Sinatra” wouldn’t be enough. He was dubbed “Sinatra Meringue Kiss” by my girls, and he is truly one of the coolest cats I’ve known. He seems to know how to interact differently with every member of our family, literally mirroring each person’s personality. He went from being abandoned in a box to having 5 beds to choose from and on to the December cover of Texas Dogs and Cats Magazine. That little cardboard box left at my office in June was truly an early Christmas gift for my family. Whoever gave him up really missed out!

Are You
allergictoyourpet? BY DR. PATRICIA DINGER
I
am writing this article because I have a special interest in managing pet allergies. I was visiting with our family pet’s veterinarian recently and he mentioned to me that he has pet owners that bring their pet in to be “put to sleep” because of a family member’s reported allergy symptoms. This was shocking to me. I have heard of people giving their pet away, taking them to shelters, or even letting them go on the street to fend for themselves….but death? Really? Hopefully this article can save some lives. Approximately 62% of U.S. households have pets. Contrary to popular belief, there are no truly “hypoallergenic breeds” of dogs or cats. It is also a misconception that people with allergies are reacting to the pet’s hair and that a pet that does not shed will not cause a reaction. In truth, it is the major proteins found in a pet’s dander, saliva, and urine that can cause a flare in allergies or can aggravate asthma symptoms. The symptoms of allergies and allergic asthma can vary from sniffling, itching, and sneezing to feeling short of breath and even wheezing. Many people who think they have an allergy to their pet may actually be reacting to the pollen on their pet’s fur. Giving up a pet in order to prevent allergy symptoms is not usually necessary. A Board Certified Allergist has specialized training and experience to help you accurately diagnose your symptoms and develop a treatment plan to help you or your child manage allergy symptoms and help you to keep your furry family. The first step is making an appointment for allergy skin testing. It is imperative that this is done in an Allergy specialist office where they are board certified to conduct and interpret this test correctly. Yes, there might
be a slightly higher co-pay to see a specialist, but the old adage is true “you get what you pay for”! It is important that you avoid antihistamines for a week prior to your visit so that skin testing can be accurately performed on the day of your visit. If it does turn out that you test positive for cat or dog, then the first step is trying to decrease the amount of exposure to the dander. Your pet should be kept out of the bedroom, try to bathe the pet once a week, remove carpeting and upholstered furniture, place allergy encasings on mattress and pillows, and use a HEPA air purifier in your room and living room. In addition to environmental controls, a regular regimen of prescription medicine would be implemented. If environmental controls and medication do not fully solve the problem or you are looking for a better longterm solution, allergy shots have a proven track record as an effective form of long term treatment if done in an Allergist office. A newer alternative to allergy shots are allergy sublingual drops that allow the convenience of being dosed at home. (Not all allergy shots or drops dispensed in medical offices are made with the same concentration and must be strong enough to have an effect).

They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA
W
hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to {December 2014}
Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. If these events sound familiar, and you would like to stop the worries and stress over your pets, you may receive free information on the type of pet door that I installed. You may contact us directly at 210-464-8953 or by email at john@alamodogdoors.com. Some of your neighbors may alreadybe satisfied customers and I am sure that they would speak highly of their pet door and our installation services.

coffee&cats A
re you a coffee or tea lover? What about a cat lover? Can you imagine combining those loves into a business venture? Well, someone is way ahead of you. Welcome to the latest in feline friendly movements, the cat café.
RIVA HERON, DVM, EMERGENCY SERVICES DIRECTOR, MISSION PET EMERGENCY
Cat cafés have been around since 1998 when the first one opened in Taiwan. A cat café is a coffee shop with the added benefit of having friendly felines available for an hourly rental price. Patrons pay the fee and are allowed to mingle and relax with the resident cats. The cafés became particularly popular in Japan, where owning a pet is much more difficult than here in the USA. However, cat cafés can be found in many countries, including Australia, Korea, Canada, Austria, Italy and more. It seems everyone recognizes the benefit of spending time with this enigmatic species. Well run cat cafés take excellent care of their cats and some are even advocates for feline welfare issues. There are cat cafés that work with local shelters to provide a safe place to help shy shelter cats acclimate to people to facilitate their adoption. If you worry about the stress for these café cats, there are often strict rules to ensure that the cats are not disturbed by excessive and unwanted attention or when they are sleeping. Common rules often include: • No picking up the cats • Shoes must be taken off before entering the cat café • Hands must be washed before coming into the café room • No flash photography The cats often work in shifts and when they are off shift, they are away from patrons so that they can have some well-deserved rest. Most countries also have very strict guidelines to 16
separate the cats from the human food preparation. Some of the cafés even separate food consumption from feline interaction. In fact, opening a cat café in the U.S. can be a challenge navigating the plethora of laws and regulations addressing the intermingling of human food and pets. To check out this latest cat craze, just do a quick google search. You will quickly learn that the first cat cafés in the United States opened in the San Francisco Bay area this year and others are rapidly opening across the country. Detractors complain that the cats are being exploited for money, but as another way to help solve the cat overpopulation problem, it seems to me to be a win-win situation. Maybe San Antonio will soon join the list of cities that have cat cafes and I will see you there! Dr. Riva Heron attended the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (’95) and is also a retired Naval Intelligence Off icer. She has practiced Small Animal Medicine in Virginia, Minnesota and Florida and Emergency medicine in San Antonio at I-10 Pet Emergency. She is currently the Director of Medical Services for Mission Pet Emergency in San Antonio.

toothresorption
COMMON AND PAINF UL
T
ooth resorption occurs when the body’s own cells start to attack and dissolve an animal’s teeth. This process can be very painful as it exposes the sensitive pulp inside the tooth. Tooth resorption is a common problem in cats, especially as they get older. It affects anywhere from 27-72% of all cats during their lifetime. Researchers have found evidence of tooth resorption in wild cats as well as the remains of domestic cats from archaeological digs. Dogs can get tooth resorption as well but it is much less common.

TOOTH RESORPTION - LOWER RIGHT JAW IN SAME 7 YEAR OLD CAT
No one knows why this disease occurs or how to prevent it. Once a tooth starts resorbing, nothing can be done to reverse the process and inevitably the tooth will be lost. Tooth resorption is a slow process that may cause the cat to suffer for months or years. Some cats will have difficulty eating dry food and will drop it out of their mouths around the bowl. Others will gulp their food to avoid chewing it and then may vomit undigested food. Many cats don’t have any obvious symptoms but will act more social and “happy” after being treated. Just because a cat does not have dental tartar or bad breath doesn’t mean that there aren’t any problems in the mouth. Resorbing teeth should be removed so that they do not cause any more pain. Some resorbing teeth can be seen during a routine physical exam, as the gum tissue may be inflamed or start to grow over the tooth. The upper canine (“fang”) teeth may start to look longer and/or have bulging gum tissue. Dental radiographs are the best way to detect and characterize tooth resorption. To ensure that this common and important disease is not missed,
be sure that dental radiographs are available for your cat when you are having their teeth cleaned! mobilebusiness HAS GONE TO THE DOGS! BY LESLIE COX
T
he Pooch House is proud to present the first mobile pet boutique in San Antonio. What started as a small business offering some of the finest hand tailored pet couture, is now a fully mobile pet boutique. You’ve seen mobile pet groomers and veterinarians, so owner Leslie Cox thought “Why stop there?” The mobile boutique is not a new concept. Across the nation, mobile retailers have surged in popularity. There are fashion trucks, mobile art galleries, florists, and now, a pet boutique. "Being first isn’t always easy”, Leslie shared. “We’re making our own way and have hit a few road blocks, but it’s all part of the adventure.” When Leslie set out to create the first mobile boutique in San Antonio, she set her sights high. “Investing so much in a truck, inventory, and outfitting it to be comfortable in all seasons was of the utmost importance,” Leslie said. “I wanted my customers to feel as comfortable as possible, that’s why we invested in full climate control, great lighting, and a rocking sound system”. Leslie’s not the only one you meet when you shop. One of her three adorable dogs will greet you with a smile and a friendly sniff. “Riley really surprised us

by how excited he gets when he sees the truck,” Leslie admits. “He hates riding in cars, but once he’s strapped in his stroller, he’s ready to go!” So you may be asking yourself, where can I find The Pooch House? That’s easy! TPH travels to many different markets and venues each week/weekend. Follow their facebook page and website to see the most current listing of events they will be attending each week. “We’re also available for corporate events, private parties, and fundraisers.” Leslie says. The Pooch House is very active in the pet community as well, supporting San Antonio’s no-kill effort. “From the beginning, TPH wasn’t just about making adorable clothes” Leslie said.
ADVERTORIAL
“Partnering with rescues has really opened our eyes and hearts to San Antonio’s overcrowded shelters.” Leslie explains, “We all can make a difference.” “When you shop The Pooch House Mobile Pet Boutique you’ll find: TPH Couture, official NBA and NFL apparel, toys, treats, and accessories.” The Pooch House invites you out to visit San Antonio’s first Mobile Pet Boutique. Give them a like on their Facebook page, facebook.com/thepoochhouse, to see where they’ll be next, or visit their website, www.thepoochhouse.com. All the items that are available on their truck can also be purchased from them via their online store.

Q: My dog runs funny and pops her front 'elbows' out to the sides. She doesn't seem to be in any pain. Can dogs have front leg dysplasia? Thanks, —Mindy
A: Allergy Meds such as Benadryl, Hydroxyzine, Chlorpheniramine maleate are all for humans. They are at best 20% effective probably because they cause the dog to be relaxed and drowsy. It would be a good idea to discuss with your veterinarian about using fatty acids, allergy testing and food trials. A: This is a good question and you are very observant. Your puppy or older dog could have orthopedic issues or cardiac issues. Some of the orthopedic issues include elbow dysplasia, medial coronoid process disease and ununited anconeal process disease. Heart and lung disease can also cause dogs to wing out elbows to expand the chest to get more air. Your veterinarian can take x-rays (radiographs) to better determine what the issue is.
Q: My Great Dane has been sneezing and shaking his ears and seems to have bad allergies. Can I give him human allergy medication like Benadryl and what dosage? Thanks, —Tiffany M.

MUTTS
AMONG US
T
BY DR. COURTNEY H. BRIDGEMAN, CHIEF VETERINARIAN, SAN ANTONIO HUMANE SOCIETY
hey are everywhere. On the street. On TV. In the movies. In cars and homes all over America. You may even have one living in your own home! Mutts, or more professionally known as “the mixed breed”. A mutt, or mixed breed is often viewed as inferior or substandard to a “purebred” dog. In certain circles, a dog’s pedigree and knowing that its lineage is wholly of one breed is the only acceptable pet. Certainly, there are reasons for which a purebred dog may be preferable. Conformation shows, AKC recognized competition, or even certain working circumstances will find that a purebred may still hold a slight edge to those of mixed or unknown heritage. However, the Mutt still has a few cards up its sleeve which might make you think twice about shelling out the dough for a purebred puppy. Since Dec 2nd is the Biannual National Mutt Day, let’s celebrate the variety! First, let’s discuss what makes a mutt. “Mutt” is an affectionate term used in America to represent dogs of unknown or mixed heritage that were not intentionally bred. Mutts physical characteristics are often hard to replicate since the original breedings were often not tracked, with no records kept. A mutt can have heritage from many different individual breeds, their originations so diluted as to become impossible to trace. Mixed breed dogs can be between two purebred parents or so convoluted as to only be classified as “mixed”. This is not to be confused with “cross-bred” dogs, a category of dog that has lately been labeled “designer breed” as people
purposefully cross breeds with the intention of creating a new and repeatable physical appearance and mixture. Again, the main difference here is human involvement. A mutt is strictly nature’s design! So what can you expect from a mutt? Mutts are unique dogs, both physically and behaviorally. You may never meet another dog that even remarkably resembles your dog. In fact, dogs in the same litter can look startlingly different even from puppyhood and especially as they age. The size, hair color and length and temperament all are based on what breeds went into their making or more appropriately what breeds are
represented in the area in which the litter was born. San Antonio, for instance, has a high number of Chihuahuas, Pit Bull Terriers, German Shepherds, and Labradors. Therefore, our mutt population takes on characteristics of these breeds most frequently. We end up with an average sized dog, around 45 pounds (unless a Chihuahua or Chihuahua mix dog was the parent then smaller), black or tan with a squarish head. But that’s just an average! You also end up with all different points in between! Funny shapes, sizes, colors, hair length, coat type and more! And with that comes all sorts of personalities! The hunting

Chihuahua-Terrier. The herding Labrador-Collie. The racing Mastiff-Hound. You just never know which of those instincts is going to show up in a mutt! It’s an adventure! What makes them desirable? 1. The uniqueness. As we discussed, very few mutts are ever the same. There is too much variability! That means you can without any uncertain terms make the claim that there is no dog in the world exactly like yours! You can come up with your own breed-name if you so choose as a shelter in South America did for all of their mutts. Fire-tail Shebaua for instance maybe a fine name for a bushy tailed pup resembling a Shiba Inu but pint sized. 2. No one can argue with what you call it. In truth, a veterinarian will take the most pronounced characteristics present in your pooch and give you a “best guess” for the two most dominant breeds. But as we know, a great majority of breeds that exist today are combinations of other breeds that also exist. So it is possible to have a dog look like a Rottweiler for instance, and have no Rottweiler within it, but instead be a Doberman, Lab, Manchester Terrier. As long as you don’t get carried away and claim to have a mastiff when in fact you have a 30 pound long haired Spaniel cross. But as long as you stay in a reasonable reference, no one knows for sure the heritage of your dog. Even the DNA tests can only take a “reasonable guess” as well. 3. Hybrid vigor. The livestock community has an arguable quality called hybrid vigor in which the first generation of offspring between two purebreds is mightier than the parents before it. They typically show a higher level of growth and {December 2014}
health. Whether this occurs in dogs or not has not been studied, but the case has been made that due to the lack of inbreeding inherent in purebred lines of dogs, exposure to recessive genetic conditions and some cancers has been decreased in mutts. So the argument can be made that mutts lead generally healthier lives than some purebred dogs! The one drawback with mutts is that, unless you are adopting an adult, you never truly know what you are going to get, both in temperament and in looks. A mutt puppy with unknown heritage is just that, a puppy. Even an experienced veterinarian will be hard pressed to give you much more than a generalization about the size and breed characteristics that may be dominant as the puppy reaches adulthood. So go in with the understanding that, in the words of Forest Gump, if life is like a box of chocolates the same can be said of mutts, you never know what you are going to get! And that’s half the fun! If certain things are important to you, size for instance, perhaps look for a slightly older puppy (4-6 months of age or more) when the adult characteristics are starting to shine through. As always, remember to Enjoy!

Can You Name these Christmas Movie Pets?
Did you know? 1. In North America reindeer are also called caribou. 2. Both the males and females grow antlers. 3. Their noses are specially designed to warm the air before it gets to their lungs. 4. Reindeer hooves expand in summer when the ground is soft and shrink in winter when the ground is hard. 5. Some subspecies have knees that make a clicking noise while walking so they can stay together in a blizzard. 6. Some North American caribou migrate over 3,000 miles in a year – more than any other mammals. 7. The name “reindeer” is of Norse origin (From old Norse word “hreinn” for deer) and has nothing to do the reins of a sled. The name “caribou” comes to us through the French, from the Mi’kmag “qalipu,” meaning “snow shoveler.” FIND ANSWERS ON OUR WEBSITE AT WWW.TEXASDOGSANDCATSSA.COM

n any given day in San Antonio the line at Animal Care Services (ACS) to surrender a family pet or drop off a stray animal is unrelenting. Princess, a 3 year old Rottweiler mix, was surrendered to ACS because her family was moving into an apartment with breed restrictions. Despite the movement towards becoming a no-kill City shelter, the reality is that pets surrendered by their owners are at immediate risk of euthanasia. Princess fell into this category - dropped off at 2pm and on the euthanasia list for 5pm.
BY MARIE CRABB, GRI
Per ACS, in fiscal year 2014, there were 1,907 owner surrendered pets to the City shelter. There is no system in place to measure how many were surrendered due to a move. Daily online appeals from San Antonio Pets Alive (SAPA), Positive Alternative to Shelter Surrender (PASS) and ACS illustrate that many of those pleas can be attributed to an owner moving. There are better alternatives than taking a pet directly to ACS. If there is an anticipated move and taking a pet is unlikely for whatever reason, the research that may save your pet’s life should be started now. Two other limited intake shelters in San Antonio are the Animal Defense League and the Humane Society. Intake is not guaranteed at either, however owner-surrendered pets that are accepted will not be at risk of euthanasia. Additionally, organizations like SAPA and PASS work diligently to assist owners in finding alternative placement for pets that would otherwise go to ACS. Their assistance can be initiated by contacting them through their website. Find out in advance whether or not the place you are moving to allows your pet’s specific breed. There are apartments available that welcome pets that are on most restricted breeds list. There are organizations that will lend assistance in rehoming a pet in danger of being left behind in a move. Google “animal rescue organizations in San Antonio” and a number of organizations come up that have extensive social networks. Research a potential adopter yourself. The best outcome is when a pet is rehomed directly from their current home straight to the 34
next, forgoing the stressful shelter environment. All of these options however require that an owner plan their pet’s future in advance. ACS should be the absolute last option because a live outcome for your pet cannot be guaranteed. Ultimately, our pets are not the City’s responsibility. Taking a pet directly to ACS relies on the chance that others will do the work to save your pet’s life. This is dangerous and sad for a pet who has no idea why they are suddenly in a foreign, cold environment and can cause their personality to change due to severe stress and confusion. In Princess’ case, she was saved by Protecting Animals Within San Antonio (P.A.W.S.). Having a pet is a lifetime commitment. We owe it to them to exhaust all possible options before surrendering them to the City shelter and relying on others to save their life. Marie Crabb is a San Antonio native and animal rescue advocate with 8 furkids of her own, plus numerous rescue fosters. She is a Realtor with Exquisite Properties, has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from St. Mary’s University and is a trained Mediator.
