preventing&recognizing Heat Stress
H
igh temperatures and sunny days are here. This means pet owners should be making a few changes to their daily routines to keep their pets safe. Due to their different anatomy, cats and dogs react to hotter temperatures differently than their handlers. Owners of pets with short, stubby noses must take extra care to keep their pets safe and cool as they are most at risk for overheating.
Unfortunately, our pets are unable to tell us when they are overheated and not feeling well, so education is key to keep our pets as cool as cucumbers.

Why do dogs pant? Our pets are covered in fur, which limits their ability to sweat. Dogs and cats have sweat glands on the bottom of their feet. Their paw pads are one of the fur-less areas on their body that allows for the release of trapped heat. Dogs are also able to release heat from their bodies by panting. Panting cools the body from the inside out. Unlike dogs, cats usually do not pant. A cat that is panting is usually considered to be in respiratory distress and should be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Tips for Keeping Cool Temperatures in south central Texas can creep very high and it’s important to keep your pet inside or in a shaded area during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Dog walks are encouraged early in the morning and late in the evening to prevent your pup from getting too hot. Additionally, it’s always recommended to test the pavement prior to taking your dog for a walk. To test the heat of the pavement, simply place your palm on the pavement and hold for approximately five to ten seconds. If the pavement is too hot for you to keep your palm flat against the surface, then it’s too hot to take your pup for a stroll. After each walk, check your dog’s paw pads for signs of redness or ulceration. If these signs are present, schedule an appointment with your primary care veterinarian. Severe heat damage to your pet’s paw pads may require serious treatments such as cleaning and medication for pain or infection. Providing proper shelter for pets that live outside is required by law and is a necessity in the hot days of summer. Pets should always have access to fresh, clean water. A shaded enclosure should be available to dogs and cats to prevent sunburn. Sunburn can affect any color coated animal, but especially short-haired or lightly colored animals. Sunburn typically occurs on thinly haired areas particularly along ear margins and the thin skin on

top of noses. Because certain cancers can develop from sun exposure, pet owners should consult with their veterinarian if they have a light-colored animal or an animal that is exposed to the sun for extended periods of time. Petspecific sunscreens are available on the market that can help keep your animal shielded against harmful sun rays. Cooling your dog off in your backyard can be cheap, easy, and convenient. A kiddie pool is a great way to do this on a hot summer day. These plastic pools are cheap, easy to fill in your backyard, and don’t take up a ton of space. Once playtime if over, be sure to remember to dump the water daily in order to prevent a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which are vectors for deadly heartworms. Signs of Heat Stress Emergencies happen to even the most prepared pet owner, so it’s important to know what signs to watch for when discussing heat stress. Excessive panting or difficulty breathing is a very noticeable sign that your pet is suffering from heat stress. Another key clue is the color of their gums or mucous membranes, usually a normal bubble gum pink, will be a bright brick red, gray, purple, or blue. Other signs can include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, incoordination, and dehydration. If you are concerned that your pet is exhibiting any of these signs or may be experiencing heat stress, it’s imperative that you seek veterinary care immediately: don’t wait! Seeking veterinary care as early as any of the abovelisted signs are noted could be the difference in saving your pet’s life. Treatment of heat stress/exhaustion by a veterinary hospital will likely include the administration of intravenous fluids, antibiotics, gastrointestinal protects, and active cooling methods in order to bring the internal body temperature down. Bloodwork values are commonly run to assess damage to the kidneys and liver and urine output is monitored closely. The hospital may want to keep your pet overnight or for several days for monitoring. Whether your pet is a fan of the great outdoors or would prefer to surf indoors in the cool A/C, remember: if it’s too hot for you, it’s likely too hot for your pet.

Sara & Isaac Crawford and Henry & Raina Q1: When and where did you get married? Isaac and I got married on October 28, 2017 in a small ceremony in my parent’s backyard in Helotes, TX.

Q2: Why did you choose to have your dogs to be a part of your wedding day? We chose to have our dogs be a part of our wedding day because they are our family and mean so much to us. We rescued them six years ago from San Antonio Pets Alive and they’ve brought so much love and happiness into our lives. We honestly couldn’t have imagined doing our greatest adventure without them by our side! Q3: How accommodating was everyone in letting your dogs be a part of your wedding and did you get resistance from anyone? We are lucky to be surrounded by friends and family who love our dogs just as much as we do and they all understood how important it was to have our dogs be a part of our wedding. Everyone was on board with the idea and helped us ensure everything went smoothly on the day of.

Q4: What advice would you give any future couples thinking of having their pets be a part of their special day? Invest in obedience training! Our dogs went through obedience training several years ago and it is still something we work on every day. Training has given us the ability to communicate with our dogs and manage their behavior, even around distractions. It has also strengthened our bond and allowed them to be happier and more confident. We were able to have our dogs sit and relax even with the photographer taking pictures and guests mingling nearby. Knowing that my dogs would behave on our wedding day took the stress out of everything and made it much more enjoyable!
Q5: What was the best part of having your dog be a part of your wedding celebration? The best part of having our dogs be a part of our celebration is knowing they were included in a very important milestone in our lives. We love being able to think back on our special day and have the memories of our dogs being there with us. It was also fun to take some great family pictures with them that we will cherish forever.

caninemastcelltumors M ast cell tumors are the most common cancer found on the skin of dogs. These tumors arise from mast cells. Normal mast cells are found in all tissues of the body but are concentrated in the skin, respiratory tract and digestive tract. They are part of the immune system and particularly important in allergic reactions, but also important in tissue remodeling, wound healing, and non-allergic skin diseases. They contain granules with a number of substances including histamine, heparin, and other inflammatory substances. When mast cells become cancerous, they form tumors—usually in the skin.
MAST CELL TUMORS ARE MOST COMMONLY FOUND ON THE SKIN. THEIR APPEARANCE CAN VARY; SOME TUMORS HAVE THE APPEARANCE OF SKIN TAGS, OTHERS ARE RED AND HAIRLESS, AND OTHERS MAY ULCERATE AND BLEED. SOME DOGS HAVE MULTIPLE MAST CELL TUMORS AT ONE TIME.

Typically, mast cell tumors are seen in middle-aged and older dogs, but they can be seen in young dogs as well. Some breeds, like Boxers, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Pitbulls and Labrador retrievers are more susceptible than others. Because of the inflammatory substances they release, local swelling, redness and sometimes ulceration can be seen associated the tumor. The tumor itself can wax and wane in size because of associated inflammation. Owners may also notice that their dogs are itchier than usual or vomiting or diarrhea may be noted due to the effect of histamine on the GI tract. However, many times the tumor is just a swelling or lump in the skin that has no associated inflammation or GI signs. Because various malignant skin tumors are common in dogs, it is important to get any new or changing masses checked out by your vet. Mast cell tumors and most other skin tumors can be diagnosed with either a needle aspirate or a biopsy. Mast cell tumors vary widely in their behavior. Depending on the behavior of the mast cell tumor, your vet may recommend additional diagnostics such as blood work, lymph node aspirates, and abdominal ultrasound prior to or after surgery, though these tests are not needed in all cases. Fortunately, many tumors can be cured with surgical excision, but some tumors are very aggressive and quickly metastasize (spread) to other organs and cannot be cured.

In tumors that can be removed, the tumor is removed with 2-3cm of “normal” skin all the way around the tumor, resulting in a proportionally large incision. The reason for these large incisions is that mast cell tumors can be microscopically very invasive into the surrounding skin, so to adequately remove all of the tumor cells and prevent regrowth, large incisions are needed. In tumors that cannot be removed or have spread, radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be recommended. Smaller tumors have a higher chance of being cured, so early detection is key and usually results in a better outcome. Dr. Sutton Howard is the head of oncology at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency. A Furry Wedding Story Justin & Lauren Long and Miley
Q1: When and where did you get married? Destination Wedding in Estes Park, CO on December 29, 2018.
Q2: Why did you choose to have your dogs to be a part of your wedding day? We consider Miley to be one of our close family members. Not having her there would be like missing a part of us. We were in Colorado for a week and were able to spend a lot of time exploring with Miley; from downtown walks, to snowy hikes. Having this experience would not have been the same without her. Q3: How accommodating was everyone in letting your dogs be a part of your wedding and did you get resistance from anyone? The wedding coordinators, and venue staff loved Miley and were thrilled she was involved.

Q5: What was the best part of having your dog be a part of your wedding celebration? It's hard to pick the best part, but a few are; the road trip from Texas to Colorado ... she was a trooper, being able to look back at our wedding pictures and see her joy, and definitely having her in the presence of so much love. Once we were pronounced husband and wife Miley walked beside us down the aisle.... she was so happy. As soon as Justin and I returned from our honeymoon we found out that Miley had a very aggressive cancer. She has since then passed. We are absolutely devastated from the loss, but are so happy we have the memories and photographs of Miley from this special day.

Q4: What advice would you give any future couples thinking of having their pets be a part of their special day? If you consider your pet as a family member, like we do, definitely involve them. We learned through the wedding planning process that lots of people do and most of the venues we visited were more than happy to have her a part of our big day.

Q: I’ve seen several scorpions in my backyard recently. How do I know if my dog gets bitten, and is there anything I need to do if he does? He’s a Yorkie Poo so he’s pretty small. —Thank you, Jennifer A: Scorpion stings are painful but usually benign. Occasionally dogs have an allergic reaction that may require steroids and Benadryl to alleviate the effects of the sting. You may want to seek advice from your local certified pest control company as to how to control the scorpion population in and around your house. They All Said I was Crazy for Getting a Pet Door, but Now I Have No Worries! BY JOHN MOYA

hen I first started talking about getting a pet door, friends and family all said I was crazy. “Think of the animals you will be letting in! Think of the thieves that will have easy access to your home. You will not be able to sleep at night knowing that someone could crawl in and do very bad things to you or your family!” Between 3:30 AM and 5:00 AM, I could count on being licked in the face with the sound of whimpering in the background. Sebastian, my Golden, was telling me something…. he needed to go out! Being woken up from a good dream like this was not the way I wanted to spend the rest of Sebastian’s life. Sebastian was left inside in the nice comforts of my home while I was away at work. At that time, I worked at the airport and the daily commute was 35 minutes to my doorstep. This was before all the traffic lights and development on US 281. Upon arrival from work, he would run me over on his way to relieve himself. At times, I would find out that something did not agree with his stomach. An expensive call to Stanley Steamers usually occurred afterwards. 16
I received a phone call at work, “Sebastian ate the carpet—the whole carpet!” I can’t believe that I lived like this for years. I replaced door jambs from him scratching at the door wanting out. I replaced carpet due to his destruction. I have caught him in Kitty’s litter box (Yuck!). I have tried crating him only to give in to his whimpering. The loss of sleep was the last straw! Something had to be done! installed one of the best (if not the best) pet doors on the market that had dual security features and the maximum energy efficiency of any pet door on the market. Sleeping until I had to wake up for work was the biggest satisfaction that I got from it. Even Kitty got a pet door. Her litter box was moved to an empty closet and the poop eating contest was over for Sebastian. I never got an animal in the house that wasn’t supposed to be there. I didn’t have to rush home from work to see if there was a gift waiting for me to clean up. A would be thief would also have to think twice prior to entering. Judging from the pet door size, a German Shepard, Pit Bull, or a Rottweiler could be waiting. My friend’s and family’s concerns never occurred. Etiquette for Dogs in Weddings
ADVICE FROM A TRAINER

Although the custom had been practiced for many years mostly in upper class circles, it was former Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson that first caused weddings between dogs to enter the headlines and the national spotlight when she arranged a wedding for her Golden Retriever, Star, and her Chihuahua, Luca, on the beach in Malibu, California in 2005. The tradition has since taken off, making dog weddings a new trend for animal lovers that these days have evolved into a hot commodity for all. If you love your dog like a child why not throw them a festive party with all their friends and parents? And while we are on the subject of festive parties, why not include your pooches in your own wedding to make an extra fun and memorable day. More and more people these days plan for their pets, usually dogs, to take part in their weddings together with friends and family. Once the decision has been made to have a wedding that includes the family’s best friend, for most people the next several questions usually follow in lockstep; “How do we make this furry beast who can never sit still stop jumping up and down on family members and guests alike?”. “How do we ensure that the human guests will have access to their food without first having to play a game of catch the canine who stole the steak?” And although it was envisioned to work like a dream when the idea was first concocted, “How do we make this cutest of all puppies behave properly so the human bride and groom can retrieve their wedding rings without first having to wait until the next day to see if they are passed out through the rear of the furry ring bearer?” There are several ways to incorporate the family’s favorite canine into the ceremony; a popular choice is for the dog to bring the wedding bands down the aisle to the awaiting groom or to walk the wedding rings down on a pillow. You can for example have the dog wear the pillow on his back or hold a basket in his mouth. Yet if you don’t feel competent to take on a potentially major training project, an easier way out might be to have the dog simply perform certain tricks that he already knows. Whenever a furry charmer is to be included in a wedding ceremony, whether it is for a fun and festive wedding of two loving canines or for a human wedding, there are two considerations that cannot be left to chance, these issues must be planned for well in advance: (a) You must train the dog to behave properly in the chaos of fun and commotions that a wedding ceremony and party are to man’s best friend. Let me repeat that: You must train, practice, practice and train the dog for all contingencies and distractions associated with a wedding, especially if the pooch has been assigned tasks to perform

during the ceremony. Keep in mind that the larger the event, the bigger the distractions. (b) You should seriously consider appointing one or more dog wranglers to be in charge of the animals. The wranglers would for example be in charge of otherwise easily neglected tasks such as canine bathroom duty. While some dogs may do fine off leash at least during parts of the event, others may need to be on leash during the entire event. Make sure you judge your dog correctly. While he may be calm and attentive to your every need during normal circumstances, a wedding with potentially hundreds of guests is far from “normal circumstances” and can be overwhelming for even the best trained canine. If you choose to train the dog yourself, most professional trainers agree that positive reinforcement of desired behavior works much better than punishing undesired behavior. As every owner knows, dogs are highly intelligent. Your job as a trainer is therefore to get your best friend interested in and focused on what you are teaching, and then to make the training fun – like playing a fun game. We all learn faster when the subject matter is exciting, pooches are no different. Assume you are training complex behaviors such as: (a) Walk down the aisle. (b) Carry a basket in your mouth. (c) Give the basket to the best man when you reach him. (d) Confidently ignore all guests, animals, birds and other distractions around you while performing these tasks. In order to perfect such complex behaviors, you must think “baby-steps” by training each behavior separately at first, and then combining them into what will appear as a seamless single behavior. Finally, once the dog has learned the entire series, you must start to introduce distractions, including having a crowd of people representing the guests at the real ceremony talking and laughing loudly while the dog is performing his tasks. If the real ceremony is to be held outdoors, you should ideally even introduce a few cats, squirrels and other animals in order to distraction-proof the dog. If possible, you should do at least the last third of your training in the actual venue of the event. Remember, anything you can do during training to perfect your four legged star’s performance, will pay off handsomely during the actual event. Finally, have fun with it – remember the worst that can happen is that your furry friend will cause the entire event to end in a much unplanned chaos. But what could possibly make the day more memorable than that?

A Furry Encounter Wedding Story Eddie & Mandy

Friends of Dr. Jaimez, owner and veterinarian at 4 Paws Animal Hospital, were introduced by Lilly to each other about a year prior to their marriage. Eddie was walking around, holding Lilly when he met his future wife–Mandy. It was only suitable that Lilly was their “Flower Dog” for their Bike Wedding. They were married on Hay’s St Bridge last Sept, and then the whole wedding party did a bike ride around downtown.

Your dog needs exercise! •
All dogs need plenty of exercise. If they don’t get it, they will develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture, socks and shoes, or dig up flowerbeds. They may even get depressed, and become really mischievous and unreliable.

Spending 30 minutes to an hour walking to the park with a dog walker, although better than nothing, doesn’t provide much exercise for a pooch, and receiving a picture of where your baby pooped may make you feel better, but it doesn’t do much for your dog.
Introducing Pet Galaxy’s Doggieland® Daycare and Door to Door Service •
For roughly the same money you would spend on 30 minutes for a dog walker’s time, we will pick up your fur-babies from your home in the morning, transport them to Pet Galaxy’s large Doggieland® play park for the entire day, where they can enjoy the park and play with compatible, like-minded dogs. Once they have experienced enough play, they will come inside for an all-important nap before they go back out for more fun again. At the end of the day, we will bring your happy and satisfied babies back home.

Prices start at $24.75 for all day daycare plus $5.00 each way for the bus ticket — flat rate. Our initial target areas are primarily neighborhoods north of Loop 1604 along the Hwy 281 corridor, including Stone Oak, Encino, Canyon Springs, Timberwood Park, Johnson Ranch and Bulverde/Spring Branch.

On request — for an extra charge, we can even serve lunch and/or dinner, administer medications, provide Bath, Brush and Nails service and/or a full groom.

And, of course, if needed — your pet is always welcome to spend the night (or longer stays) with us.
