Wile E.Coyote & Blanche Deveraux – Available at HHS

W

BY JANICE MACROSSIN

Swagg ile E.Coyote (aka Joey) was found in a box on the side of the road with 6 other puppies. Luckily someone spotted them and they were brought into foster care with Helotes Humane Society. Wile has made great progress with his foster Mom in overcoming his fear of people and places. He is a funny and wonderful dog and we at are working hard to find the right fit for him in a forever family. Blanche Deveraux the bulldog was brought to us from Helotes Animal Control as a stray. She had a horrible ear infection. It has been treated and Blanche is waiting to go to her forever home in a few weeks. We'd like to remind people that want to own bulldogs that they need to expect to encounter veterinary bills for things such as we saw in Blanche like skin and ear issues.

Kitten Season at the Shelter Although affectionately termed “kitten season,” the influx of neonatal kittens and pregnant cat mothers during the warmer seasons of the year can cause major strains on animal shelters who regularly operate at or near full capacity. Unfortunately for South Central Texas, “warmer seasons” typically apply to four out of four seasons in the year. In other words, here at the San Antonio Humane Society, kitten season never ends completely and the need for foster homes and supplies is ongoing. A neonate is defined as a newborn that is less than four weeks old, and neonate kittens may or may not arrive at the shelter with their mother. However, animal shelters are not often the best place to raise and wean neonate kittens. Shelters attempting to find placement for cat moms and their litters are often forced to house them in the same areas as other older kittens and adult cats. This can be stressful for mom as she must be on constant alert due to all of the sounds, sights and smells. In addition to environmental stressors, neonates are extremely susceptible to disease and the risk of exposure while being housed in a shelter is very high. Neonates that arrive at a shelter with their mother are suspected to have consumed the nutrient-rich colostrum, or first milk, that is full of antibodies and is important for immunity. When neonates arrive at a shelter without their mother, it cannot be assumed that they received this important colostrum and they are considered the highest risk. The best option for a mom and her kittens or neonatal kittens is to remove them from the shelter setting and place them into a trained foster home until they are weaned. Foster homes are able to provide one-on-one care not typically available in shelters, and trained foster parents are able to quickly identify problems that may develop within a litter. It is important that fosters are trained in the proper care of neonates prior to receiving them as fosters. If mom is with her kittens, fostering neonates is a smoother experience for foster parents as mom will do the majority of the work including feeding, bathing and socializing. Neonate Kitten Care 101 Neonatal kittens have very little body fat and are therefore unable to maintain body heat. A heat source such as a heating blanket, a rice sock that is warmed in the microwave, or a heating disk that is warmed in the microwave and maintains heat for approximately 8-10 hours can be used to provide the kittens with external heat. It is important to note that these heat sources should be 12

covered with blankets to prevent direct contact with the kittens that could result in thermal burns. If kittens do not arrive at the shelter with their mother, the amount of care required to raise them increases drastically as orphaned neonates require feedings every 2-4 hours depending on their age. KMR (kitten milk replacer) is the most commonly used formula for neonatal kittens. Cow’s milk should not be used to feed neonatal kittens. Foster parents are trained to hold the kittens in a position that is similar to the natural nursing position with their heads elevated. Feeding neonates improperly or too quickly can result in them swallowing milk into their lungs, also known as aspirating, and can result in aspiration pneumonia which can be deadly. Neonatal kittens require stimulation from their mother or their foster in order to urinate and defecate. Fosters should be trained to stimulate each kitten to urinate and defecate after each feeding. A simple trick is to use a moist cotton ball and gently dab or rub the cotton ball on the genitals of the kitten in order to stimulate the process. This cotton ball action simulates the mother’s tongue. Grooming by mom is incredibly important and orphaned kittens require this action as well. A toothbrush can be used to gently brush each kitten in short strokes all throughout their coats in order to mom’s tongue and how she would groom them if she were present. Most kittens love this and come to enjoy their time being groomed. Depending on the age of the kittens and the shelter, a deworming and vaccination schedule will be put into place for the litter. Deworming and vaccinating is an important part of raising healthy kittens as they are one of the most disease susceptible populations that arrive at a shelter. At the San Antonio Humane Society, foster kittens are typically housed in their foster homes until they are at least two pounds and eight weeks old. A Rewarding Short-Term Experience Fostering a litter of kittens with or without their mother during kitten season is a huge help to local shelters! Not only does it provide the safest place for the kittens to grow, it also keeps kennel space available for cats or kittens of age who are ready to be placed for adoption. Fostering can be difficult but it is always a rewarding experience! The San Antonio Humane Society provides foster families with all necessary supplies to care for your foster pet, including food, bowls, bedding, litter, and toys. Medical care is also provided at no charge. The great thing about fostering neonatal kittens is that it is a short time period commitment and tons of fun! For more info on fostering, please visit SAhumane.org/foster.

heartdiseaseanddiet

W

e all love our pets and want them to eat the best diet. The pet food industry is large and can be overwhelming when trying to decide what food is best. Addin the trends of the pet food industry following human food trends and it can be downright daunting.

BY JEANNIE L CLARK, DVM – HEAD OF EMERGENCY & CRITICAL CARE

Approximately one year ago, I diagnosed a 1-yearold golden retriever with dilated cardiomyopathy or DCM. During this disease process, the heart weakens and enlarges resulting in heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms and can cause acute collapse. After digging through this pet’s history, it was discovered that he had been fed a grain-free diet since he was purchased. There was some recent chatter about young golden retrievers that were fed a grainfree diet and developed DCM; we decided to dig deeper and perform a few tests. We tested an amino acid called taurine that in cats, has been shown LENNON MEDINA to cause DCM as a result of the deficiency of that specific amino acid in cat food. His test results showed very low taurine levels. His heart disease was treated with heart medication and he was placed on taurine supplements. His food was changed to a non-grainfree diet and slowly the changes to his heart that had occurred resolved over the next 3-4 months. There have been enough cases of DCM in dogs that have been fed a grain-free diet that the FDA announced it was investigating the link between the grain-free diets and the development of DCM. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? At this time, it is not known what exactly in the diet is causing this. There is discussion that it may be due to an issue with bioavailability of the amino acids or that there is an interaction with another ingredient in the diet that is not allowing the taurine to be absorbed. It may not even be directly related to taurine and may be a direct toxicity to the heart muscle. For these

14

reasons, active research is being done. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? If your pet is currently on a grain-free diet, I would consider changing the diet and speaking with your family veterinarian. Pets currently fed a grain-free diet should be monitored for signs of weakness, decreased ability to exercise, coughing, labored breathing and breathing faster when sleeping. If you see any of these signs, have your pet evaluated by a veterinarian. Choosing the right food for your pet is important and if you have questions you should speak with your family veterinarian. We are here to help you take the best care of your pets. The most important aspect of a diet is that it is wellbalanced and provides the adequate nutrition for your pet. Dr. Jeannie Clark is the Head of Emergency and Critical Care at MissionVet Specialty & Emergency. She joins MissionVet after recently completing her three-year ECC residency at Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Clark is passionate about teaching and mentoring colleagues, providing excellent patient care and helping to build cohesive team environments. Her special interests include mechanical ventilation, envenomation, anesthesia, shock, wound management, immune mediated disease, and pain management.

Q: Is it dangerous for my elderly cat to have a lot of catnip?

Q: What measures can you do to protect your dog’s paws from the hot concrete when walking?

A: Catnip is very safe for all cats. As with all things, moderation is best. Catnip is a perennial herb of the mint family, if ingested it could lead to vomiting and diarrhea, but that is unlikely. Cats tend to rub against catnip, not eat it. So let your older cat enjoy.

A: The best thing to do is to walk when it’s cool and try to keep on the grass. If you are going to be on hard surfaces outside you can try using boots, such as Ruffwear. PET GALAXY'S NEW BUSES

If you live in Stone Oak, Encino or any of the adjacent communities, Pet Galaxy’s new coach bus pickup and delivery service may soon be coming to a bus stop near you, or for an additional fee, directly to your home. The new offering is a subscription service customized for each individual family and canine. The company will pick up your dogs every morning and drop off your happy and satisfied best friend every evening. During the day, the dogs will be provided plenty of play time for exercise with all their canine friends, access to playing various fun enrichment games such as “Use Your Nose to Find the Treat” and retriever games such as having a staff member throw a stick, tennis ball or frisbee. If desired, dogs may even participate in formal obedience training instructed by one of the company’s professional dog trainers. Even all-important nap-time is scheduled for each dog at strategic times during the day. Each bus can safely transport over 50 dogs (and cats), which means this is a limited offering on a first come, first serve basis, especially targeting families in the Stone Oak and Encino areas. Pet Galaxy is located about 20 minutes’ drive north of Stone Oak on Hwy 281, and has been offering daycare, lodging, grooming and training services for almost 10 years running. The facility occupies almost 6 acres in the city of Spring Branch, and is arguably best known for their huge outdoor doggie play yards, and as Lynn Haegeland, Director of Operations, adds “Please don’t forget our fantastic staff, and our service that we work so hard to ensure is second to none.” Most facilities located in and around the city of San Antonio offer either tiny indoor-only play areas, or in a few cases, a small outdoor play area. However, common for most of these, is that they are usually much too undersized for any real doggie play to materialize. If you have seen one of these facilities, you may have noticed how the dogs mostly stand around looking at each other, and the only break in the monotony is whenever a staff member decides to take a walk around the area. In the latter case, most of the dogs will simply follow the human to see if he or she has any fun ideas.

Pet Galaxy, in contrast, is located in the beautiful Hill Country north of San Antonio. The facility covers almost 6 acres, and provides large outdoor play yards featuring natural ground cover and plenty of oak trees with squirrels and other fun wildlife. The largest of the yards even includes a palm-tree encircled in-ground doggie swimming pool with a 7-foot water fall and a giant oyster with a pearl that spits water. Your furry friends can run, play, swim and just be a dog to their hearts’ desire. A visit would quickly convince you that these are the happiest dogs in San Antonio and beyond, bar none. But don’t simply take our word for it, take a look at some of the videos and many photos on the company’s Facebook page (http://facebook.com/PetGalaxyUSA). “Many of these canines’ families initially told us that their dogs did not like other dogs, or did not like to play at all.”, Lynn points out. “The reason was that they had previously taken their furry friends to some other facility with much smaller, or virtually non-existent, play yards. They could not believe their own eyes when we showed them video of their best friends running, swimming and playing uninhibited.”, Lynn affirms with a proud smile. As all informed dog owners know, it is absolutely essential for canines large and small to get plenty of exercise. Dogs have a vast surplus of energy, referred to by experts as “predatory energy”. This is the energy store originally utilized by the animal in pre-historic times, when dogs had to hunt for their own food just like other predators. The energy is still there, creating a very strong craving in the animal for running and serious exercise, in most cases much more than a human, even an Olympic runner, can offer. Dogs need other dogs both for socialization and friendship, and for serious play. Otherwise they take out their frustration in some other way; for example, your flowerbeds, your underwear, shoes or furniture. For more information and to subscribe to the service, call Pet Galaxy at 830-885-5335 or 210-526-9680, check out their website at http://PetGalaxyUSA.com or their Facebook page at http://facebook.com/PetGalaxyUSA.

TIPS TO HELP YOUR DOG

duringbacktoschool

B

ack to school is upon us as summer comes to a close. We spend much time preparing our children (and ourselves), yet this transition also affects our pets. The freedom and attention received during summer vacation abruptly ends at the first day of school. Without warning, schedules shift and playmates of summer suddenly have new interests and friends. All of this can create a great amount of stress and fear in our pets which can affect them in many ways causing behavioral problems such as chewing, soiling in the house and excessive barking. More serious health problems can also occur with your pet such as vomiting, diarrhea, skin problems or eating problems ranging from not eating at all to eating strange objects such as gravel, dirt, plants, toys, etc. Here is what you can do to help these important members of your family? Take It Slow Where possible, make changes and adjustments slowly, over a period of time. If Fido will be in the crate when the kids go back to school, start putting him in the crate slowly for shorter periods of time before the big day.

BY MARLENE RING

Keep Them Busy Make sure to provide toys or chew sticks to help occupy his time alone. Keep Their Routine Avoid abrupt changes especially in eating and diet habits. The first week of school is not the time to change either the time of feeding or type of food.

28

Why not Take a Dog Class? This is a great time to brush up on obedience. This time together will also offer mental stimulation and provide some bonding time while adjusting to the new routine. Put Them on the Schedule Soccer practice, cook dinner, do homework…. ……..do a stimulating activity with your dog. Let Them Join In Let your dog spend time with your kids while they do homework, practice the piano or read a book for school. Not only will it help your dog, but your kids may enjoy homework time more since they have a friend to share it with. Give Them Lots of Love Finally, give your pet the most love and attention you can. Reassurance through regular walks, exercise, playtime and grooming will help your companion make a much smoother “back to school” transition.
