Last month’s Endurance Test, hosted by the DOGS NSW Obedience, Tracking & Performance Disciplines Committee at our grounds at Orchard Hills, was once again a success, attracting more entries each year. Well done to those who participated, as it was a huge and tiring day for both dogs and their owners. Many thanks also to the Vetting Officer, Dr Jennifer Green BVSc, and the team of Veterinary Students from Camden who assisted with vet checks throughout the day.
This edition includes details of the 2024 RNSWCC Board Elections, which commences on page 6. This year’s Elections will be conducted by Vero Voting on behalf of DOGS NSW. This means that the majority of the voting will be conducted by email, due its ease of voting and cost efficiency. Other State bodies have used this previously and it has been very successful. As this is the first time DOGS NSW have used this method, please take your time reading the information on pages 6 and 7. Only members residing in the eligible five regions will be eligible to vote. These regions are Metropolitan, Hunter, Illawarra & South East, Northern and Southern.
Please ensure that you read the nominees’ resumes for each of your prospective regions. The resumes commence from page 8: Metropolitan Region through to the Southern Region on page 17.

The DOGS NSW Scent Work Working Party held their Ultimate Scent Work Trial on 4 July at Orchard Hills grounds. This new Ultimate Class became effective on Monday 1 July 2024 when revised rules were implemented and to be eligible to enter competitors must have qualified for the Scent Work Master Class title or two Element titles. As this was the first of this class to be trialled, coverage of the event was highly anticipated and can be viewed on page 28.

Voting for the 2024 Elections will be conducted by Vero Voting, providing additional voting methods including electronic, postal votes and phone voting. To ensure a smooth process, there are a few things you need to consider, these are outlined below.
1. Contact Details
Ensure DOGS NSW has your latest address, phone and email in the members’ database. Are you receiving your Weekly Woof e-Newsletters? If you are, you are ok. Most votes will be distributed via email. If you do not have an email address on the members’ database, Vero Voting will send you a paper postal vote.
2. Paper ballots
Paper ballots are by request only. These are sent to the printers and mailed out with a tight deadline. All requests for a paper ballot must be received before Friday, 13 September 2024.
3. Sharing information with Vero Voting
Your personal information is managed in accordance with the DOGS NSW privacy policy. Information shared with Vero Voting is for the specific purpose of providing you with the means to participate in the voting process.

Who is Vero Voting?
Vero Voting is an independent Australian company that specialises in planning, management and delivery of independent enterprise agreement votes, ballots, elections, and AGMs. They have worked with small and large companies such as Reserve Bank of Australia, Bendigo Bank and KPMG. Dogs West, Dogs Victoria and Dogs Queensland, have all used this service and process successfully.
How will Vero Voting get my details?
Vero Voting asks for a voters list from DOGS NSW. This voters list will contain details of each eligible voter, whose membership was financial at 1 August 2024. They use the voters list to manage access to their voting system, and to contact you with voting information.
Will Vero Voting contact me in the future?
Once a ballot, or election is over all personal details are deleted in line with their internal security policy. The only way you will be contacted from Vero Voting is if you are on the voters list for a ballot or election in the future, in which case your details would be provided to them at that time.
Does anyone know how I voted?
No. Vero Voting only conduct secret ballots, elections, and AGMs. Every ballot, election, or AGM vote entered into their system is anonymous. Your personal information enables authentication and is not associated with your vote preference.
What if we have a Joint Membership. Do we receive two votes?
Vero Voting will send you a vote for each person on the joint membership. If you share an email address, both votes will be sent to the same email address.
I can’t find my login details to access the vote

The future for purebred dogs is threatened on many fronts. Government legislation is trying to limit the breeding of dogs, and we must, as a group and individually fight this process.
Falling numbers of members, registrations and entries to shows threatens the very existence of DOGS NSW. This must also be addressed. So far this year there have been about 13 weekends with All Breed Shows in the Sydney Metropolitan area, which means DOGS NSW is losing a major revenue source via both hire of our showgrounds and show levies. It also means many metropolitan members are getting out of the habit of going to shows.
We must find ways to increase current revenue sources and find new revenue sources if DOGS NSW is to survive. This may include streamlining current show formats, so exhlbitors are not required to commit to a full day of showing. We need to attract new people to our sport, especially younger people, that may not have the time to dedicate whole days to showing dogs. DOGS NSW may need to create shows on the days previously occupied by clubs that no longer exist.
We need to utilise the skills of our membership base, to better achieve positive outcomes for DOGS NSW, for instance, we should find members with social media skills to raise our profile and create new opportunities.
The show calendar must also be revised; a weekend where there are three sets of shows in the central west is untenable - how can these clubs survive.
As a director, my focus would be on these major issues, and I would be attempting to unite the board to focus on these major items.

I am surprised at how quickly the past three years has gone by. I believe we have accomplished a lot already however there is still a long road ahead to enable us to grow and enhance our world of dog activities. Prior to my appointment to the Board of Directors I had a general knowledge of the many and varied sporting activities undertaken by our membership.
I can now say I’m much more attuned to those sporting activities and am excited to continue to grow these activities with your ongoing support. I want DOGS NSW to be proactive in sending positive feedback to the general public so that they can learn more about the numerous activities they can undertake with their much-loved canine family member. It’s certainly not all about showing and conformation, it’s about enjoying life and the range of canine sports. There are many members of the general public that would embrace becoming active members within our sporting disciplines, if they knew of their existence.
I have submitted my nomination to renew my tenure as a Board member again in the upcoming DOGS NSW elections. I seek the support of all members to assist me achieve this goal, so that we can continue to make a difference. I am always happy to meet and talk with people in relation to their dog within the conformation and sports activities.
I wish to continue to learn and grow recognition and support for the varied and different dog sports and all activities that are available to our members. I want DOGS NSW to embrace, grow and support their membership across all dog disciplines and trust that with your support we can together, make a difference.
I feel we are facing many challenges as an organisation and with strategic planning, we are in the early stages of rolling out ways to increase awareness in the community of who DOGS NSW is, along with the activities we can offer to them to enjoy with their dogs. This will increase revenue growth We are increasing exposure amongst the community as we undertake both planned and extra participation at public events, where we are focusing on giving the public a central focus for all their dog needs, as well as information and assistance. This exposure includes such events as Dog Lovers Festival, The Pet Show, The Great Cattle Dog Muster, Bunnings Community Days, Breed Family days, Council Dogs Day Out.
We are generating a lot of enthusiasm within the organisation in these activities and I would see myself as continuing on this journey, supporting and growing our great hobby; promoting DOGS NSW, targeting public awareness and in turn increasing participation in our sports and membership growth.

An electrician by trade. I worked in the heavy manufacturing industry for many years including 12 years as an Underground Coal Miner. In 1993, I hung up the tools and pursued a sales career in the electrical wholesale industry. Over 14 years I held many positions including Sales Representative, Branch Manager and Regional Sales Manager.
In 2007, I moved back to manufacturing but this time in management. I started with Eaton Electrical Australia as National Mining Manager. (At that time the company was called Cooper Electrical, Crouse Hinds.)
Over the last 17 years I have managed to grow the turnover of the Mining segment at Eaton (Crouse Hinds) by approximately one thousand percent (in other words 10 fold.) Over the last few years I have taken on several other positions within Eaton, including National Manager for MTL Limited and B-Llne. Eaton Electrlcal Australia is the Australian arm of Eaton Industries, an American Fortune 500 company with a turnover of approximately 25 bllllon USD per year. My experience working in such a fast-paced, demanding, international company has given me a great understanding of management requirements. Cost versus value propositions, Company and Director Legal obligations. I have been directly involved in company acquisition negotiations both in Australia and Europe.
I currently review and advise on company tenders and nondlsclosure agreements, seeking legal advice where required. As part of the Senior Leadership team at Eaton Electrical Australia I have direct responsibility for an Engineering team and Sales team totalling around 15 people. A major part of my role is new product development.This requires an open mind and the ability to listen to others, something we seem to be losing today.

My motivation for seeking your support comes from a review of the landscape in which we find ourselves at the present time.
Across the country, we are again being threatened by the legislative process, with law and regulation being developed in each state that will ultimately threaten our activities. Most recently, NSW has witnessed an assault from the Animal Justice Party that has sought to label us as ‘puppy farmers’ and attempted to impose draconian measures that would have made it impossible to continue as breeders. We are still not out of the woods yet with QLD poised to implement another round of legislation aimed at dog owners, but some progress has been made. The outcome of the Victorian legislation leaves us in no doubt as to the objectives of minority political groups with a single agenda.
Going forward, l argue that strong leadership and constant vigilance is the only option for us and I would make this a priority of my service. I strongly support animal welfare. What I do not support is ill informed, emotive campaigns that threaten us, whether they are in NSW or anywhere else across the country. We have rights that need to be defended.

On a daily basis I deal with all types of people seeking medical advice and assistance on sensitive and confidential issues. I lead a staff of 10 and oversee the daily running of The Pharmacy, all the time strictly complying with government regulations and reporting.

This year I have taken on the education of Trainee Judges in The Utility Group, which has been rewarding to pass on my long-time knowledge of Utility breeds.
There are many challenges facing our Pure-Bred Dog World. Our canine world is under threat from many areas with antidog lobbies, indiscriminate cross breeding and restrictions being imposed on our membership leading to the erosion of our sport.
I would bring to the role of a Director of DOGS NSW my business practice knowledge, communication skills and ability to work with others. I would like to offer my capabilities to working towards a better future.

I will continue to be both highly visible and accessible to members residing within my Region so that I can provide quality representation on their behalf to DOGS NSW.

What an honour it has been to serve the wonderful people of the Northern Region. What we have achieved together: two defibrillators for Coastal and Inland, regional grants for over 10 clubs to get new and often innovative equipment to run events. And dare I say, a voice in Sydney.
I have a very long family history in the sport that few can match: my grandfather, who judged at Sydney Royal in 1938 and a family association in Fox Terriers, Scottish Terriers, Great Danes and Dachshunds.
As a grass-roots member of the Dog world, I understand the “small” problems that members face daily, but I’m up for the challenge of the big issues too. It is hard work settling into the job of Director, but I bring my scientific analysis to all problems. I’m growing a thick hide to the negativity because my commonsense approach annoys some. We face huge issues with legislation into the future and I hope I can continue the fight, with the enormous support and encouragement you already give me.

DOGS NSW and its members need to be seen as the premier place from which the public can purchase a puppy.

The Annual General Meeting of the Royal New South Wales Canine Council Limited will be held on Wednesday 1 November 2024 in the Amenities Building of The Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs, 44 Luddenham Road, Orchard Hills, commencing at 7.30pm.

The Obedience Tracking Endurance and Rally Judges Committee will be conducting a Judges Training Scheme in 2025
Closing date for applications will be COB Friday 6th December, 2024. The Theory Night – Introduction to the Course will be held on Thursday 20th February 2025 at 7.30pm. (Please note all metropolitan candidates are required to attend this session. Zoom will be available for country candidates.)
The Theory Examination will be held on Thursday, 3rd April and Friday 4th April, 2025.
Successful metropolitan candidates will be required to attend regular training sessions held by The Obedience Tracking Endurance & Rally Judges Committee on the second Thursday of each month.
The Practical Examination will be held on Friday 7th November 2024.
Courses to be held are CCD, CCD/Novice (run concurrently) Novice, Open, UD, UDX, Rally, Tracking, Track and Search and Endurance.
Regional applicants will be given all possible support by the Obedience Tracking Endurance and Rally Committee.
Application forms can be obtained from DOGS NSW Office. Applicants are advised they will not be permitted to apply for both Obedience and Rally in the Judges Training Scheme in any one calendar year.
CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE OBEDIENCE AND TRACKING JUDGES TRAINING SCHEME.
APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED UNLESS ALL REQUIREMENTS AS LISTED HEREUNDER ARE MET.
APPLICATIONS MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY THE $90.00 THEORY EXAMINATION FEE.
PRACTICAL EXAMINATION FEE OF $110 TO BE FORWARDED ON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THEORY AND BEFORE PRACTICAL COMMENCES.
CCD
(a) A candidate for Community Companion Obedience Examination must:
1 be a member of DOGS NSW for at least three (3) years prior to the application and be a current financial member (not associate) of DOGS NSW.
2 be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
3 be a resident of NSW.
4 apply in writing and submit to the Board of Directors with the application, a written certificate that he/she has been a Ring Steward/ Trial Official at not less than three (3) official trials in the past twelve months.
5 have personally trained and trialled a dog to Community Companion Dog title and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors
6 has been an active member of an affiliated club for not less than three (3) years
7 has been an active instructor for three (3) years
NOVICE
(b) A candidate for Novice Obedience Examination must:
1 have been a Ring Steward/Trial Official at not less than three (3) official trials in the past twelve months and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
2 have judged at least six (6) recognised Community Companion Dog All Breeds Obedience Club Trials, which in the opinion of the Obedience & Tracking Judges Committee, were of sufficiently high standard and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
3 have personally trained and trialled a dog to Companion Dog title and applied for and been granted the dog’s title and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors with their application.
4 be listed on the current DOGS NSW List of Approved Judges for Community Companion Dog Obedience.
OPEN
(c) A candidate for Open Obedience Examination must:
1. have been a Ring Steward/Trial Official at not less than three (3) official trials in the past twelve months and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
2. have judged at least six (6) recognised Novice All Breeds Obedience Club Trials, which in the opinion of the Obedience & Tracking Judges Committee, were of sufficiently high standard and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
3. have personally trained and trialled a dog to CDX title and applied and been granted the dog’s title and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors with their application.
4 be listed on the current DOGS NSW List of Approved Judges for Novice Obedience.
UTILITY
(c) A candidate for Utility Obedience Examination must:
1 have been a Ring Steward/Trial Official at not less than three (3) official trials in the past twelve months and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
2 have judged at least six (6) recognised Open All Breeds Obedience Club Trials, which in the opinion of the Obedience & Tracking Judges Committee, were of sufficiently high standard and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
3. (a) have personally trained and trialled a dog to Utility Title standard and gained at least one qualification in Utility Class and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors with their application. OR (b) have held an Open Licence for a minimum of 3 years; have judged a minimum of 15 Open Trials at All Breed Obedience Trials; have stewarded for 15 UD classes at All Breeds Obedience Trials in the preceding two years; have attended one judge’s seminar in the past three years and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors with their application.
4. be listed on the current DOGS NSW List of Approved Judges for Open Obedience
(d) A candidate for Utility Excellent Obedience examination must:
1 have been a Ring Steward/Trial Official at not less than three (3) official trials in the past twelve months and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
2 have judged at least six (6) recognised Utility All Breeds Obedience Club Trials, which in the opinion of the Obedience & Tracking Judges Committee, were of sufficiently high standard and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors prior to the date of the practical examination.
3. (a) have personally trained and trialled a dog to Utility Title standard and gained at least one qualification in Utility Class and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors with their application. OR
(b) have held a Utility Licence for a minimum of 3 years; have judged a minimum of 15 Utility Trials at All Breed Obedience Trials; have stewarded for 15 UDX classes at All Breeds Obedience Trials in the preceding two years; have attended one judge’s seminar in the past three years and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors with their application
4. be listed on the current DOGS NSW List of Approved Judges for Utility Obedience.
TRACKING
(f) A candidate for Tracking Trial examination must:-
1. be a member of DOGS NSW for at least three (3) years prior to the application and be a current financial member (not associate) of DOGS NSW
2. be at least eighteen (18) years of age
3. be a resident of NSW
4. apply in writing and submit to DOGS NSW with the application, a written certificate from an Affiliate conducting Tracking Trials that he/she:
a) has been an active member of that Club for not less than three (3) years.
b) has been an active Instructor at a Club that conducts Tracking training.
c) has been an Official Chief Steward at two (2) and have been a Tracklayer for the Tracking Dog Section and Tracking Dog Excellent Section at least three (3) recognised Tracking Trials. d) have personally trained and trialled a dog to Tracking Dog Excellent and applied and been granted the dog’s title.
TRACK & SEARCH
(g) A candidate for Track and Search Dog Judges Examination must: (As per ANKC Track & Search Trial Judges Training Scheme –effective Jan 2019)
1. be a member of DOGS NSW for at least three (3) years prior to the application and be a current financial member (not associate) of DOGS NSW
2. be over eighteen (18) years of age
3. be a resident of NSW
4. have an active and ongoing participation in the sport of Track & Search or conducting Track & Search Trials.
5. have personally trained and trialled a dog to a Track & Search Dog title and stewarded at a minimum of two sanctioned Track & Search Dog trials.
ENDURANCE
(h) A candidate for Endurance Test Judges Examination must:
1 be a member of DOGS NSW for at least three (3) years prior to the application and be a current financial member (not associate) of DOGS NSW
2 be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
3 be a resident of NSW.
4 apply in writing (on such form as may be required) to the Obedience & Tracking Judges and Judges Training Scheme Committee.
5 submit with the application a written statement from an affiliated Dog Obedience Club that the Candidate has been an active member of that Club for not less than three (3) years.
6 submit a statement providing full details of the Candidate’s involvement with Endurance Tests.
7 have personally trained a dog to Endurance Test applied and been granted the dog’s title and supply full details to the Board of Directors, and
8 if accepted as a Candidate, sign a release of DOGS NSW in respect of any liability arising out of the Examination, in such form as DOGS NSW may require
RALLY
(i) A candidate for Rally Judges Examination must:
1 be a member of DOGS NSW for at least three (3) years prior to the application and be a current financial member (not associate) of DOGS NSW.
2 be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
3 be a resident of NSW.
4 apply in writing and submit to the Board of Directors with the application, a written certificate that he/she has been a Ring Steward/ Trial Official at not less than three (3) official trials in the past twelve months prior to the date of the practical examination.
5 have personally trained a dog to Rally Master Title, applied and been granted the dog’s title and supply full details thereof to the Board of Directors.

Eligibility for Admission to Dances with Dogs Judges Training Scheme:-
(a) Be a financial member of DOGS NSW
(b) Be a resident of New South Wales
(c) Be a minimum of 18 years of age
(d) Have been a member of DOGS NSW for a minimum of three (3) years
(e) Have personally trained, competed with and achieved a minimum of two qualifying cerfificates, for a dog in NOVICE class in either Freestyle or Heelwork to Music and supply full details thereof to DOGS NSW Board of Directors
(f) Have been an acfive member of an affiliated club for not less than 3 years
(g) Apply in wrifing, providing evidence of Ring Steward/ Trial Official or other involvement in the organisafion and conducting of at least three official DWD compefifions in the preceding 12 months.
The OT&PD Judges Commiftee has the right to approve other people who do not fit these criteria.
Trick Dog - Judges Training Scheme
The Obedience Tracking and Performance Disciplines Judges Committee will be conducting a Judges Training Scheme in 2025.
The closing date for applications will be COB Friday, 6th December, 2024.

(b) Be a resident of New South Wales
(c) Be a minimum of 18 years of age
(d) Have been a member of DOGS NSW for a minimum of three (3) years
(e) Have personally trained, competed with and achieved a minimum of two qualifying cerfificates, for a dog in NOVICE Trick Dog class and supply full details thereof to DOGS NSW Board of Directors
(f) Have been an active member of an affiliated club for not less than 3 years
(g) Apply in writing including experience of Ring Steward/Trial Official at a Trick Dog compefifion at not less than three (3) official competitions in the preceding 12 months.
The OT&PD Judges Committee has the right to approve other people who do not fit these criteria.
NOTE: Applicants are advised they will not be permitted to apply for both Dances with Dogs and Trick Dog in the Judges Training Scheme in any one calendar year.

• One exhibit per Dogs Australia approved entry form
• Photocopied or carbon entries are NOT acceptable
• Late or phone entries will NOT be accepted
• Payment by mail MUST be made by cheque or money order - DO NOT send cash in the mail
• Bitches in oestrum may be shown EXCEPT in obedience, or if specified on show schedule
• If a Club needs to contract a “replacement” judge they are advised to take note of DOGS NSW Regulation Part II - Show, Section 12.6 (c), which relates to an exhibitor requesting a refund
• In accordance with DOGS NSW Regulations Part II - Show, Section 20.1, “Limitation of Exhibits for Judging”, Clubs reserve the right to alter or amend judging arrangements and to substitute judges if deemed necessary under this Regulation. Chihuahua SPOTLIGHT
History
Ask just about anyone what the world’s smallest dog is and they will almost always respond ‘the Chihuahua’. This wonderful little dog is one of the best known of all our canine friends. However, as well known as it is, the breed’s history is unclear.
Some say it originated from (and was therefore named after) the largest state in Mexico – Chihuahua. Some say the breed came from Malta and a painting of a little dog resembling a Chihuahua appears in a Botticelli painting in the Sistine Chapel. This painting was finished ten years before Columbus returned from his discovery of the new world. Just another piece of the Chihuahua’s puzzle.
With archeology and folklore combined, it appears as though the breed goes right back to the central American states, and is therefore deserving of the name Chihuahua.
The Chihuahua was recognised as a show dog by the Australian National Kennel Council (now know as Dogs Australia) in 1904 and the first Australian imports arrived in the 1930s. However, it was not until the 1950s that the breed made an appearance in Sydney.
Appearance
The standard, though brief, captures all the attributes of the breed. The Chihuahua is a small, dainty and compact breed that moves swiftly with a brisk, forceful action.
The head is apple-domed and, although no longer in the breed standard, the extended standard explains that a Chihuahua may or may not have a molera – a ‘hole’ in the Chihuahua’s head similar to a fontanelle in human babies. In times past, the molera has been accepted as a mark of purity in the breed and occurs when the bones in the head are not firmly knitted together.
The standard describes the eyes as large, round, not protruding and can be dark, ruby or light in light coloured dogs. The ears help to make the Chihuahua the dog that it is – they are large, flaring and set at an angle of approximately 45 degrees giving breadth between the ears. They are carried erect and not tipped or broken down.
The mouth has full dentition and a normal scissor bite. The neck is slightly arched and medium in length. The shoulders are well laid, lean, sloping into slightly broadening support above straight forelegs set well under the chest. This provides freedom of movement without looseness. The back is level and from the point of shoulder to the rear point of croup is slightly longer than the height at withers.
The Chihuahua’s feet are small and dainty, turning neither in nor out, neither hare- nor cat-like. The tail is a unique feature of this wonderful dog: furry and flattish in appearance, it broadens slightly in the centre and tapers to a point. It is carried up and over the back, known as a sickle tail. When the Chihuahua is moving, the tail should never be carried tucked under the body nor curled below the topline.
A big plus for the Chihuahua is that it can be any colour or combination of colours except merle. The breed preferably weighs between 1.8 and 2.7 kilograms.
Coat (Smooth Coat): smooth, of soft texture, close and glossy, with undercoat and ruff permissible.
Coat (Long Coat): long, soft texture (never coarse or harsh to touch) either flat or slightly wavy. Never tight and curly. Feathering on ears, feet and legs, pants on hindquarters, large ruff on neck desirable. Tail long and full as a plume.
Temperament & Suitability
The Chihuahua may be small, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in personality.
The Chihuahua is a gay, spirited and intelligent dog that adores its family. It loves nothing more than spending time with its owners and loves a cuddle. Despite its size, the Chihuahua has definite watchdog qualities and will alert its family to anyone it is not familiar with
The Chihuahua enjoys a daily walk but does not require lots of exercise. With this in mind the breed would make a suitable pet for a time-poor family, singles or an older owner.
Due to its size, the Chihuahua also does not need a big backyard and can happily live in a small space as long as it gets plenty of love and attention. However, if left outside and ignored, this little dog is capable of wreaking havoc in the garden.
Some breeders are wary of selling puppies to families with young children, as the breed can be easily injured, again due to its size. With some help from early training and socialisation, the Chihuahua will get on with most people.
Health & Maintenance
The breed, while generally sound, is prone to loose kneecaps (subluxation of the patella). When it occurs, the kneecap on the rear legs slips out of its groove. At times, surgery may be required but a Chihuahua with a mild case can live a normal life. Buying from a reputable and registered breeder will reduce the possibility of buying a puppy with an inherited problem.

Health & Maintenance
Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar is a common problem in young Toy breed puppies, although most of them grow out of it before they are old enough to leave the breeder.
A weekly brush will keep the Chihuahua’s smooth, soft coat in order. Ensure both the eyes and ears are cleaned regularly and check if the toenails require clipping each month. If needed, a bath each month is sufficient – but take care not to get water in its ears as infection can occur.

The Charitys double Championship Shows combined with a very well-supported Silent Auction resulted in a financial success for the Charity. The quality of the dogs exhibited was reflected in the Best in Show Line Ups.
The General Specials judge for the AM show was Mrs Lynette Brown; her selection for Best in Show was Mr C & Mrs L Duval’s Wire Fox Terrier CH. BEAGELEE THE IRON THRONE (AI). Runner-up Best in Show was the Shetland Sheepdog SUP. CH. DEEROD AS IF BY MAGIC, owned by Miss D Crofts.

DOGS NSW Scent Work Working Party
Inaugural Ultimate Scent Work Trial
On Thursday 4 July, the DOGS NSW Scent Work Working Party hosted NSW’s very first Ultimate Scent Work Trial under Judge Dr Penny Mead near the Jack Russell Terrier area at the DOGS NSW Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs at Orchard Hills.
This new Class became effective on Monday 1 July 2024 when revised rules were implemented. To be eligible to enter this new and more complex Class, competitors must have qualified for the Scent Work Master Class title or two Element titles. In order to judge this more challenging Class, judges must also be accredited. Five judges have currently undergone this extra training and accreditation to judge Ultimate trials, under the leadership of Christine Stani, the DOGS NSW Scent Work Working Party Convenor.
Our eight competitors at this first Ultimate trial were testament to the hard work, training and commitment they’ve invested into their amazing dogs and this wonderful sport since the inception of Dogs Australia Scent Work trials in 2021. All teams were very excited to face this new challenge and displayed exceptional sportsmanship, supporting each other throughout the trial. Their skilful dogs searched beautifully and coped extremely well with the extra endurance required and the added complexity and uniqueness of this Ultimate Class.
Spectators are permitted to watch competitors search at this level, and many came to support our teams and witness this special milestone in this very popular dog sport. Thanks to a band of willing stewards and our DOGS NSW Representative Sam Ibbott-Cordi, this inaugural trial ran smoothly and created a great deal of enthusiasm for future trials.
These first eight teams to compete at this Ultimate level are to be congratulated, not only for their skills and achievements, but for the fantastic ambassadors they continue to be for this much loved sport.

Healing Solutions FOR PET LOSS

The loss of a pet adds yet another dimension to grief, since it seems to the griever that society cares even less about losing a pet than a human. Yet anyone who has lost an animal knows that the grief is just as intense; it just isn’t as widely understood by society as a whole. The workplace can be a particular problem: employers can seem very unsympathetic and uneducated about the depths of grieving the loss of a pet. Typically, there isn’t any compassionate leave when one loses a pet, so it means the griever using up vacation time (assuming they have some) or taking time off with a doctor’s note, even though they’re not ill, but grieving.
As we work through the grief, songs, a word spoken in haste— anything—can trigger an emotional response. No one should ever feel embarrassed, guilty, or remorseful when this happens; it’s all part and parcel of the grieving process, and each person’s grief is unique. During the early days and weeks of grief (the acute phase) you need to be gentle on yourself. Try your best to focus on the good times and try really hard to not allow your mind to take you back to reliving those final moments over and over again. It comes down to the best and most comforting way of dealing with the grief so as to heal yourself.
And cry whenever you need to—don’t hold back—let out all those deep-rooted emotions. It is said that one must cry a thousand tears before we begin to move through all the emotions that accompany grief. And it’s exactly what the doctor ordered: crying activates the body in a healthy way. When you cry for long periods it releases oxytocin and endorphins—our feel-good chemicals—and these chemicals can help to ease physical and emotional pain.1
When I asked members of my Facebook pet loss support group to describe to me what they thought grief was, these are just some of the answers they came up with. In their responses you can see many examples of what we have talked about above: Pain, longing, emptiness, hollowness, heartache, indescribable sorrow, uncontrollable crying that comes on like waves in the ocean.
The emptiness of waking up, knowing that the love that you shared with the one no longer there will never be there again. Deep hollow sadness that makes you sick to your stomach and an ache on your heart that will never be repaired.
Just came back from a beautiful walk in nature. The minute I was at my door, the ache in my heart returned. It is an emptiness inside, like all that keeps you alive has been torn from you. How can it be I will never hold, smell, or talk to him/her again?
Guilt
So whatever happened prior to the death—the new food you fed your pet; a the late night at work or an early bedtime that prevented you from being around when disaster struck; you name it—we often will connect it to the death and blame ourselves. And a lot of times these thoughts simply are just not true. We must remember that none of us have the power to stop death. If any of us did, we would be world famous and in great demand everywhere.
Once we realise that no one can stop death, it becomes clear that we must accept the fact that we are not in control. And let’s be honest, we control so much when it comes to the lives of our pets: the food they eat, the exercise they receive, the environment they live in, the vet who will look after their health…the food they eat, the exercise they receive, the environment they live in, the vet who will look after their health….
It’s important to remember that accepting grief does NOT have to mean that you are “okay” with it. You might never be okay with it. You simply acknowledge that the loss has happened and that life has permanently changed.
Start planning ahead, if possible, to locate resources such as support groups that can help you through those difficult first days after a loss.
When you lose the pet you love anf nothing anyone can says or does takes your sorrow away. Do not stop believing - there is a way out of the all consuming darkness.
The answer to moving through grief and finding peace again starts with YOU and understanding what is going on inside of you.
