The Ibizan Hound is an active, athletic breed with an engaging personality.
20 SPOTLIGHT
The Ibizan Hound is a fast dog that can hunt on all types of terrain, working by scent, sound and sight. Traders brought these dogs to the Balearic Islands where the breed excelled as a rabbit hunting companion. Their slight build and long legs made Ibizan Hounds adept at traversing the hilly terrain in search of small game.

Dear Members,
Chairman's REPORT
The 2024 DOGS NSW Royal Canin International Spring Fair was again a great success, with the inclusion of the A20 and the FCI shows, adding to an already intricate program, including the Crufts Qualifier Show. The added classes of New Exhibitor Sweepstakes/Neuter Champion Sweepstakes and the Champion Discipline and Title Sweepstakes events are sure to encourage participation in shows at all levels. Congratulations to the Chair of the Spring Fair Dog Show Committee and all the hard-working members of the Spring Fair Dog Show Committee for putting on such a wonderful event.
Throughout August and September DOGS NSW has ramped up our profile significantly with the promotion of our purebred dogs and sporting activities being taken to the public by the hard work of the Public Relations Committee and the Grounds Development Committee.
The Dog Lovers Festival on 24 & 25 August at Sydney Olympic Park showcased many of our Breed Clubs having stands, with hands-on dogs and specific breed information available to assist the public with knowledge about the different breeds’ characteristics and how they may fit into many families’ lifestyles.
The DOGS NSW area was set up with all facets of DOGS NSW Sports, Obedience, Lure Coursing, Dancing With Dogs, Trick Dogs, Scent Work, with our volunteers giving the public overviews on how to become involved with their dogs in our sporting activities.
DOGS NSW member, Kate Parry-Rice, was the most wonderful host on the Paws and Talks Stage over the weekend, with a program that was set out each day for the seven groups of dogs. Members of DOGS NSW with their dogs were interviewed with the public engaged, asking questions and obtaining both verbal and written information on their preferred breeds.
I must acknowledge the hard work that went into the setting up of our DOGS NSW stands and the volunteers from our membership; the Chair of the Public Relations Committee, Angus McIlrath, and his hard-working Committee; to Kerry Christofi and Abby Davis from our DOGS NSW Office as well as Kate Davidson for her interviews and social posts.
Following on from August into September, the Grounds Development Committee, along with members and volunteers of the Public Relations Committee have been active each weekend with the Stores for Paws days at Bunnings, taking our DOGS NSW dogs to Bunnings Castle Hill, Northmead and Penrith. A major audience thriller has been the show put on by Loretta Rabbitt and her amazing Dancing With Dogs and Trick Dog Miniature Poodles.
The grooming seminar held on 3 August, presented by the DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee and long-time member and exhibitor Mrs Debbie Le Brun was very well received by those wanting to learn the art of hand stripping terriers. It was encouraging to see two new exhibitors in attendance with West Highand White Terrier puppies.
Further areas of promotion for this month are the Pet Tech CPR and First Aid Course being held on 19 and 20 October, and the DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee Double Shows on the 27 October.
This month’s edition covers the spectacular Dog Lovers Festival, which was held at Sydney Olympic Park on 24 -25 August. This year’s event proved to be a wonderful success for DOGS NSW due to the involvement of the Public Relations Committee and the commitment and enthusiasm of their volunteers. DOGS NSW’s three stands were increased in size, and this, together with new signage and an overall fresh makeover for all of the stands, significantly helped promote DOGS NSW’s message to the general public, generating lots of interest. Coverage of the entire event plus DOGS NSW’s involvement commences on page 11.
Promotions have continued with the public over the last few months, with both the Public Relations and the Grounds Development Committees attending ‘Stores for Paws’ days at Bunnings Northmead, Penrith and Castle Hill. Bunnings stores nationwide have been running these events to help support and raise funds for local animal welfare groups and both committees and their volunteers have had a wonderful time interacting with the public about purebred dogs, our sporting activities and generally raising our profile amongst the community. Trick Dog and Dances With Dogs demonstrations from Loretta Rabbitt and her clever Poodles have been a big drawcard for crowds at the locations and a cake stall was also set up as a fundraiser. For coverage and images please turn to page 8.
Congratulations to all those Juniors who took part in the DOGS 2024 State Junior Handler Final, which was hosted this year by Campbelltown & District All Breeds Kennel Club on Saturday, 4 August, with both events sponsored by Royal Canin. There is coverage of each event: State Junior Finals on page 24 and Campbelltown’s Show on page 32.
August was certainly a big month, as the 2024 Endurance Test was held on the 11th August at our Orchard Hills grounds (coverage on page 28) along with the 2024 State Retrieving Championships, which were held in the Hunter Valley at Tocal Agricultural College on 31st August and 1st September. Coverage of this event commences on page 30.
The breed spotlight this month is the Ibizan Hound, an unusual, agile and highly active breed with a quirky temperament and an aptitude for climbing and escaping. This breed needs a lot of daily exercise and therefore makes an ideal jogging buddy. Ibizan Hounds are sweet, but can be stubborn and independent. Read more about the breed on page 20.
Winners of the August FOMO Pet Tags were Kathy Drew and Kym Hogan.

Stores forPaws
Bunnings stores nationwide have been running ‘Stores for Paws’ events to help support and raise funds for local animal welfare groups. Over the weekend of the 10th and 11th August, the DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee was invited by several Bunnings Stores to partake in the ‘Stores for Paws’ Campaign. It was a perfect opportunity for the committee and volunteer members to showcase their purebred dogs, educate the public on responsible dog ownership and promote membership, along with the many activities that DOGS NSW offer to the community. Our DOGS NSW stand with banners, information brochures and colouring activity sheets for the children looked very professional thanks to the hard work of the Public Relations Committee Chair, Angus McIlrath and DOGS NSW Marketing Manager Kerry Christofi.
People in attendance at Northmead Bunnings had the pleasure of meeting Liz Wells and her Bedlington Terrier ‘Lugh’ (pictured right). The public was intrigued by Lugh’s coat texture and trim, which led Liz to explain what they were bred for and why they were trimmed in that way. Sue McFadden was also there with her Cocker Spaniels ‘Albert’ and ‘Dolly’
At Castle Hill Bunnings Lyn Brand’s Bernese Mountain Dog ‘Tanner’ was a huge hit keeping the crowds amused with his
antics and Sharon Hannigan’s Border Collies ‘Harvey’ and ‘Gianni’ received lots of attention as the children received grooming lessons, taking it in turns to give them a brush. See pictured on page 9 (top left).
Sunday, we ventured out to Penrith Bunnings with John McLean and ‘Brady’, who was instantly recognised as the famous Dulux Old English Sheepdog. Also in attendance was Angus McIlrath with Miniature Schnauzers ‘Stella’ and ‘Oriana’ (pictured left) and Sue McFadden with Cocker Spaniels ‘Lucy’ and ‘Albert’ (pictured at the bottom of page 9 with Bunnings Penrith Activities Organiser and DOGS NSW member Lesley Galea). The public were also treated to a Dancing with Dogs and Trick Work demonstration by Loretta Rabbitt and her stunning Poodles, ‘Swayze,’ ‘Fosse’ and ‘Hugh’. Loretta invited the children to get involved, showing them how to teach their dogs tricks, and they loved it. See Loretta in action with her Poodles on page 9 (top right and below).
Following the success of this weekend, the Public Relations Committee were welcomed back to Bunnings Castle Hill for the Spring Fiesta on the 7 September, and so many members put their hands up to attend. In addition to the breeds that attended the Stores for Paws Campaign, we had Jeanie Montford and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Sue McFadden with her Cocker Spaniels, Lyn Brand and Bernese Mountain Dog Tanner, Louise Patterson with her Golden Retriever, Michelle Raymond with Miniature Schnauzer Stella, Jenni Foster with a Boston Terrier and Lyn Mansfield. Loretta Rabbitt and her Dancing Poodles stole the show and were again a crowd favourite.
The DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee also had a cake stall with many delicious cakes, slices and biscuits for sale with all proceeds going back to improve member facilities. Many thanks to Anne Jeanes, Liz Wells, Sue McFadden, Lyn Mansfield for your bakes and Barbara Killworth for your assistance. Photo below by Cabal Canine Candids.
These weekends are the first of many public appearances for the Public Relations Committee and volunteers and we thank those members and Directors who are committed to promoting DOGS NSW to the public.
DOGS NSW GROUNDS DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE GROOMING SEMINAR
The newly formed DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee held their first Grooming Seminar on the 3rd August 2024, sponsored by Shear Magic Professional.
It was attended by members interested in learning the art of hand stripping West Highland White Terriers and Scottish Terriers as well as mastering the head piece and furnishings.
Thank you to long-time DOGS NSW member Debbie Le Brun who offered her services and shared her fast knowledge on the hand stripping, coat preparation, tools and tips and tricks to get the best finish. Thank you also to Shear Magic Professional for providing a gift bags for each attendee. We really do appreciate your support.
It was also pleasing to see two new exhibitors there with puppies.
Everyone seemed to have a great time and loved our delicious lunch prepared by myself and our committee members Liz Wells and Angus Mcilrath.

THE PAW-TY RETURNED TO SYDNEY: DOG LOVERS FESTIVAL
Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 August 2024
The Dog Lovers Festival bounded back to Sydney Showground bigger and better than ever this August. Featuring a new line up of pup-inspired entertainment, insightful education zones and renowned animal experts, plus returning crowdfavourites, the two-day celebration inspired and delighted dog owners.
Festival Founder, Jason Humphris says the team expanded the festival offering to meet the evolving needs and interests of pet owners. New highlights included a Dog Friendly Travel Hub, the Optimum™ DOGWALK, Australia’s Best Doggleganger competition and more.
“After the success of last year’s debut co-located festivals (Dog & Cat Lovers Festivals), we were thrilled to be returning to Sydney with an even bigger and better line up of talent and attractions, for both pet parents, claw or paw inclined. The weekend was about uniting pet parents for a weekend of furry fun, where we could celebrate our wonderful companions while getting trusted insights on how to be the best pet parent we can be, and, of course sniffing out all the latest and greatest stuff to spoil our pets. Plus, who can say no to seeing 800+ dogs and 200+ cats in one weekend?” said Festival Founder, Jason Humphris.
The Dog Lovers Festival saw the launch of the new OPTIMUM™ DOGWALK, where the awe-inspiring runway provided visitors up close and paw-sonal viewing of some of Australia’s top four-legged models. The paw-fect runway featured a wide range of impeccably styled dogs (and their two-legged human friends) dressed by leading Australian brands, Bared Footwear and The Upside, in the DogWalk Fur-ashion Parade. Further shows included Australia’s ‘Top Dogs Downunder’ with TV Host Lara Shannon, rescue dogs, famous Insta-Pooches, fan-favourites The Wonderdogs with Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill, and the winners of the first-ever Doggelganger competition. You could get answers to all your canine centred questions in a personal one-on-one session with one of Australia’s leading veterinary hospital network.
SYDNEY DOG LOVERS FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
• One of the most popular attractions at this year’s festival, was the OPTIMUM™ DOGWALK which hosted Australia’s most talented, hard-working, insta-famous and stylish dogs, pawing their way down the runway to the tunes of ‘Ministry of Hound’, Dan Rowntree, and styled by Jeff Lack.
• The VitaPet Arena also wowed visitors with new attractions including Mini Dog Races and Dog Parkour, plus Farmer Dave Graham’s K9 Superwall and tricks and tips from Dr Katrina, Kelly Gill and the Wonderdogs.
• Kurgo® DockDogs showcased impressive canines going head-to-head in Big Air, Extreme Vertical and Speed Retrieval competitions, launching themselves into an indoor 100,000-litre pool!
• You could travel well with your pup at the new Dog Friendly Travel Hub and discover the best products, experiences and destinations to share with your furry friend along the journey.
• Adoption Zone – you could speak with adoption experts about responsible dog ownership and the joy of helping a dog in need find a fur-ever home.
• Festivalgoers could get their ‘feel good’ hormones at the newly revamped Lyka Pat-A-Pooch Zone by getting up close and personal with an array of dogs.
• Also new this year was the Advance® Paws and Talks Stage where groups of purebred dogs were introduced to the public in a relaxed atmosphere by presenter Kate Parry-Rice. Kate also talked about the different sports in which you and your dog can get involved.
• Advance® TM Breed Showcase – presented by DOGS NSW, the expanded zone gave visitors their fur-fix by meeting an A-Z of dog breeds with 800+ dogs.
• SASH Ask-A-Vet – you could get answers to all your canine-centred questions in a personal one-onone session with one of Australia’s leading veterinary hospital network.
“As one of the largest dog-dedicated festivals in the world, we were delighted to launch our reinvigorated festival program in Sydney. We’re constantly listening to the needs and wants of dog parents and understand Sydneysiders raise their beloved companions in diverse environments, surrounded by beaches, waterways and beautiful parks. They are always looking for new ways to spoil their pups and bring them on new adventures, so our festival provides the perfect place to connect with experts and celebrate their love of dogs with fellow fanatics. It’s also a great place to shop with all the latest products and services to ensure their four-legged friends lead the most fulfilling lives,” says Festival Founder Jason Humphris.

DOGS NSW AT SYDNEY DOG LOVERS FESTIVAL
DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee represented DOGS NSW at the Sydney Dog Lovers Festival on Saturday and Sunday 24 -25 August, a relationship with the organisers that commenced back in 2014 and that has lasted 10 years, with a change in venue from Moore Park to Sydney Olympic Park, along with many changes and developments over the years.
At this year’s event we had three stands: a large DOGS NSW Information Stand, a Sports stand as well as the Advance® Paws and Talks Stage, which replaced the Ask the Breeder stand from previous years.
We made the most of the large DOGS NSW stand with new updated signage and for the first time a new Media wall, where members of the public could take photos with our beautiful purebred dogs. The public loved this idea and many photos were taken alongside several of our members’ dogs with the photos then published on social media. We had plenty of information available on all breeds as well as sporting activities and affiliated clubs. Our DOGS NSW volunteers and/or advisors at the stands directed the public to our website for further information, as well as taking the quiz to determine ‘What breed suits me?’ through the QR codes on signage and cards.
Dog Sports was another huge part of our display in a separate newly-signed area (next to the DOGS NSW Information Stand) with modern, bright colours, reflecting our new sports. Information sheets were available on all sports, our affiliated Kennel and Obedience Clubs, with direction to our website for any further information required.
At the suggestion of the organisers, a new and improved Ask the Breeder stand was developed and renamed the Advance® Paws and Talks Stage. The new format and layout were a great improvement, as they introduced our purebred dogs as a group with their owners in a more relaxed atmosphere.
DOGS NSW member, Kate Parry-Rice, was our compere for the talks, and it was presented as a combination of exciting dialogue and information, which the public lapped up and the dog owners enjoyed. These group interviews and/or talks took the pressure off the owners presenting to the public singularly and the experience was fun as well as educational.
Kate also discussed sporting activities offered by DOGS NSW which resulted in lots of visits to our stands by the public, who were eager for more information, keeping our volunteers very busy throughout the weekend.
Our President, Lyn Brand, also did interviews with Kate on both days, covering a wide spectrum of topics including how to select a puppy, finding a reputable breeder, questions to ask a breeder along with DOGS NSW sporting activities on offer. See photo taken on bottom left on page 12.
DOGS NSW Affiliated Breed Clubs and members were also in attendance with their own specific breed stands. Many representatives from the clubs also came along to support the Information and Sports stands.

DOGS NSW AT SYDNEY DOG LOVERS FESTIVAL
We had our own Kate Davidson, DOGS NSW Marketing & Communications Manager, attend the event this year. Kate spent some time getting to know many of our volunteers, finding out why they enjoyed working at these events as well as taking photos for DOGS NSW social media posts. She also encouraged the public to use our media wall and tag us. Please see below some of the interesting quotes from our volunteer members.
What do you like about volunteering for DOGS NSW?
“I have been around dogs for about 40 years, having done obedience, showing and scent work. I love to impart knowledge about dogs and promote suitable sports for different dogs. People think they need to be full members to do sports so I like to be here to give them the right information about different clubs and sports.” - Lyn Mansfield
“The different shows allows us to help the public choose the right dog. I came to the DOGS NSW stand two years ago and the breed quiz recommended a Lagotto Romagnolo. I had never heard of that breed so I found out more and got one soon after that. I then took Bruno to obedience training and that is how I got involved as an instructor.” - Heather Buxton
“My grandmother was tricked by a backyard breeder and I saw the impact of a badly bred dog on the health and wellbeing of the dog. I like to be a part of a community that protects the breeds and to share information about the health, temperament and breed standards of each breed.” - Annabelle @kaysaspaniels
Why would you come and meet the DOGS NSW team?
“It is a great way for you to come and meet the breeders and find out more about the different dog breeds. It is also a great way to find out about participating in dog sports and meet some of the lovely dogs.” - DOGS NSW President Lyn Brand

The 2024 Sydney Dog Lovers Festival has been one of the largest displays and presentations DOGS NSW have brought to the public and manning these stands could not be achieved without the support and help of our dedicated members: Sue Bolyson, Rebecca Bolyson, Heather Buxton, Tracie Donnelly, Liz Gallagher, Claire Jones, Melanie Kenny, Ann Leonard, Sue McFadden, Cathie Macken, Lyn Mansfield, Tom Mangan, Annabelle Myers, Louise Patterson, Michelle Raymond and Guy Spagnolo. Thank you to all the participants for your time, effort and passion towards the event. Special thanks to John Maclean whose unwavering assistance before, during and after the event is unmatched. Thank you so much John!
Events like these add exposure to our organisation and growth in activities and membership. We hope that’s next year’s event will be built on this year. Let’s hope more Breed and Sporting Clubs can see the benefits of attendance and will consider next year’s event.
On a personal note, I would like to especially thank our staff, Kerry Christofi, Abby Davis and Kate Davidson for your dedication, hard work and personal support in all our activities, as we try so hard to showcase DOGS NSW, our purebred dogs and our sporting activities. Many thanks also to our ground staff, Chris Gedzyk, Matthew Tyne and Dave Hayes, who so willingly help with the delivery and collection of all our equipment for these events.
Finally, many thanks to photographer Holli Hollitzer, who captured many amazing moments throughout the weekend.

Markus Zusak is the international bestselling author of six novels, including The Messenger, Bridge of Clay and The Book Thief - one of the most loved books of the twenty-first century and a New York Times bestseller for more than a decade. His work has been translated into more than fifty languages, and has been awarded numerous honours around the world, ranging from literary prizes to bookseller and reader choice awards. His books have been adapted into film, television and theatre.
He was born in Sydney, and still lives there with his wife, two children, and the last dog standing in a once thriving household of animals.
Three Wild Dogs (and the truth) is his first book of nonfiction. There’s a madman dog beside me, and the hounds of memory ahead of us – all in our pages to come. It’s love and beasts and wild mistakes and regret, but never to change things.
What happens when the Zusak’s open their family home to three big, wild, pound-hardened dogs: Reuben, a wolf at your door with a hacksaw; Archer, blond, beautiful, deadly; and the rancorously-smiling Frosty, who walks like a rolling thunderstorm?
The answer can only be chaos: there are street fights, park fights, public shamings, property trashing, injuries, stomach pumping, purest comedy, shocking tragedy, and carnage that needs to be seen to be believed . . . not to mention the odd police visit at some ungodly hour of the morning. There is a reckoning of shortcomings and failure, a strengthening of will, but most important of all, an explosion of love and the joy and recognition of family.
From one of the world’s great storytellers comes a tender, motley and exquisitely written memoir; a love letter to the animals who bring hilarity and beauty, but also the visceral truth of the natural world, straight to our doors and into our lives, and change us forever.
“For the last fifteen years, my family and I have lived a chaotic, comedic, beautiful, shocking, heartbreaking and ultimately loving life.
We’ve brought animals into our home who’ve not only impacted our everyday, but shown us who we are. Writing it was a joy, even amongst the heartbreak. It reminded me why I became a writer in the first place: I do it because I love it. I can feel that in every page, and hope the readers will feel it too.”
- Markus Zusak

50. Decisions of the Board of Directors relating to:

shall only be effective and may only be acted on if confirmed at a subsequent meeting of the Board of Directors held no sooner than 14 days from the date of the earlier meeting.
RATIONALE

RNSWCC Ltd Annual General Meeting Agenda
8.2 C Rafton 2000121100 to move by Special Resolution
THAT the RNSWCC Articles of Association, Part I-Preliminary: Interpretation, Article 1(58)(ii), which reads as follows:-
(58) “specialist club” means a club or society or other association of persons (SGM 01/09) recognised as such by the RNSWCC which admits to membership breeders and supporters of a specified breed and varieties of that breed of dog and which conducts exhibitions:-
(i) not being trials, at which only dogs of that breed and varieties of that breed are eligible for exhibition and
(ii) being trials, where dogs from the same breed or breed group, as recognised by the ANKC Ltd from time to time, are eligible for exhibition.
Be amended to read:-
(58) “specialist club” means a club or society or other association of persons (SGM 01/09) recognised as such by the RNSWCC which admits to membership breeders and supporters of a specified breed and varieties of that breed of dog and which conducts exhibitions:-
(i) not being trials, at which only dogs of that breed and varieties of that breed are eligible for exhibition and
(ii) being trials and events, where dogs from the same breed or breed group, as recognised by the ANKC Ltd from time to time, are eligible for exhibition. Affiliated breed clubs are permitted to open their trials and events, other than Championship Shows, to any Groups and/or breeds at their discretion.
RATIONALE
This removes the restriction of accepting entries for all sporting activities and trials by breed clubs. The Board of Directors gave dispensation to a breed club to hold an event with more than simply their own breed in an effort to increase the opportunity of members to enter - and it was a huge success!
It is a known fact that some sporting activities are reaching entry capacity and closing within hours due to the interest from members.
Rationale submitted for that dispensation was “For breed clubs to continue to exist, the events they hold must have to be financially viable”.
It is more imperative that we assist not only our Affiliates, but these new sports activities to become a major part of our canine calendar.
9. MEETING CLOSED.
Please note that members attending the AGM should ensure that your membership is financial as this will be checked upon entry. platforms.

Though the Ibizan Hound has an ancient history, these athletic and elegant hounds are relatively rare. The breed as we know it today has origins in the Balearic islands—with one of the primary islands, Ibiza, inspiring the hound’s namesake.
However, ancient Egyptian art depicts slender hunting dogs with features similar to the Ibizan. This likely means that traders brought these early dogs to the islands, where the breed excelled as a rabbit-hunting companion. Their slight build and long legs made Ibizan Hounds adept at traversing the hilly terrain in search of small game.
The Ibizan Hound is a fast dog that can hunt on all types of terrain, working by scent, sound and sight. Hunters run these dogs in mostly female packs, with perhaps a male or two, as the female is considered the better hunter.1
Appearance
Tall, narrow, finely built, large erect ears.2.
The Ibizan Hound is a lean, agile dog of the hound family. There are two hair types of the breed: smooth and wire. The more commonly seen type is the smooth.1.
Height: in country of origin, varies between 56-74 cms (22-29 ins), but balance is the overriding factor. 2.
Temperament & Suitability
Ibizan Hounds have a balanced temperament that can make them excellent companions, as long as you can give them enough physical and mental exercise. These dogs have a moderate to high need for exercise to avoid boredom and unwanted behaviours, so plan on about two hours of energy-burning activity each day. With long legs and plenty of stamina, the Ibizan hound makes a great jogging partner.
The Ibizan Hound can be somewhat reserved around strangers but blossoms in the company of their close human companions. The breed is also known for having a playful streak.
Ibizan Hounds are intelligent, active, and engaging by nature. They rank 53rd in Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogs, being of average working/obedience intelligence, but many Ibizan owners will enjoy recounting a multitude of examples of their problem-solving abilities. They are true “clowns” of the dog world, delighting in entertaining their people with their antics.
Though somewhat independent and stubborn at times, they do take well to training if positive methods are used, but will balk at punitive training methods. They are generally quiet, but will alarm bark if necessary, so they make good watch dogs. They are sensitive hounds, and very good around children and other dogs alike. They generally make good house dogs, but are active and athletic, therefore they need a lot of daily exercise. They do not make good kennel dogs. Ibizan Hounds are sweet, but they are very stubborn and independent. 1.
Ibizan Hounds are “escapologists”: they are able to jump incredible heights from a standstill, so they need very tall fences. They also have been known to climb, and many can escape from crates, open baby gates and even locks. They have a strong prey drive, so they cannot be trusted off-leash unless in a safely enclosed area. Once off the leash, they might not come back for a long time.
Ibizan coats come in smooth and wire varieties, with a wide range in how profuse the wire coat can be. Both varieties should be groomed, upright ears should be checked weekly to avoid a buildup of wax and debris, which could result in an infection. The teeth should be brushed often, daily if possible, using a toothpaste formulated for dogs. 3.
Ibizan Hounds are generally healthy dogs, though there are some conditions the breed can be prone to. These include hip dysplasia, eye disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, and congenital deafness. Responsible breeders will screen their stock for conditions that can affect the breed.3.
Training
Versatile and trainable, Ibizans make excellent family pets. The breed is even-tempered, affectionate, and loyal.
The Ibizan is a bit aloof but is a sweet-natured, family-oriented housemate. Alert and watchful of strangers, they are nevertheless friendly and outgoing dogs.
Puppies should be cheerful, playful, and healthy. Early socialisation and puppy training classes are recommended. Ibizans excel in a number of canine sports, including lure coursing, obedience, agility, rally, and tracking.3.

We were blessed with another beautiful day on 4 August for the running of the 2024 DOGS NSW Junior Handler State Final, held in conjunction with the Campbelltown & District All Breeds Kennel Club show at DOGS NSW Headquarters at Orchard Hills.
Our delightful judge was the well credentialled Mrs Makaela Chato from Victoria, who, at the age of fifteen, was crowned the Western Australian State Final Champion. Makaela went on to be awarded the ultimate award of National Final winner, travelling to the UK to represent Australia at the World Final at Crufts. She has been involved in Shetland Sheepdogs under the “Sheltastic” prefix since the age of eleven and currently breeds both Shetland Sheepdogs and Salukis with her husband Aaron.
Our three classes of competitors today comprised of 26 children (4 boys and 22 girls), who arrived bright and early, eager to take their place in the spotlight in Ring 1 and present their handling skills to our awaiting judge.
First to enter the ring were the 7 to under 10 years class with two boys and five girls putting on a wonderful display of showmanship with their chosen dogs, who ranged in size from a Lagotto Romagnolo to an Irish Wolfhound. All seven children were then given the opportunity to test their handling skills in the second round with an unknown swap dog, chosen by the judge. After being put through their paces once again, Mrs Chato selected her three placegetters with 1st place being awarded to Brooklyn Wistuba , handling a Lagotto Romagnolo and a Shetland Sheepdog; 2nd place to Harper Meehan who took in a Border Collie and a Finnish Lapphund, and 3rd place was Rylee Craig piloting a Finnish Lapphund and an Australian Shepherd.
The next class, under the watchful eye of Mrs Chato, was the 10 to under 13 years class with one boy and five girls all hoping to make the final. Their presentation was polished and it was a difficult task to separate each performance. All six children went through to the swap dog round and spent their allocated 10 minutes quickly learning about their swap dog and how to present them before returning to the ring. Another round of exercises followed with the nod being given to the 1st place winner Olivia Moorby, who worked with a Jack Russell Terrier and an Irish Wolfhound; 2nd place-getter was Miranda Grant who handled a Beagle and a Borzoi, with 3rd place going to Isla Hayes showing a Pug and a Border Terrier.
Winners: 7 to under 10yrs

The final class of the day was the 13 to under 19 years class – the largest class with one boy and twelve girls all vying for the chance to compete in the Final. These children’s handling skills were exceptional and the chance of a place would come down to the most minute detail. The concentration level was intense and it was an extremely arduous task for our judge to whittle this class down to six competitors who would go through to the swap dog round. After much deliberation, the lucky six were announced and took their swap dogs for a spin before settling into their running order to try and dazzle Mrs Chato with their handling talent. After a stringent workout, the 1st place award was made to Eva Tulk, who impressed with her handling of a German Shorthaired Pointer and a Whippet, with 2nd place going to Charlotte Manton working with a Welsh Terrier and a Dachshund (Miniature Longhaired), and 3rd place awarded to Jordan Long who showed a Borzoi and an Australian Shepherd.

The time for the Final was now here! As Mrs Chato took her place in the centre of Ring 1, the three class winners returned to try their best to produce a flawless round which would see them crowned the 2024 DOGS NSW Junior Handler State Final winner. It was great to see a sizeable crowd gathered ringside to cheer on the three class winners: these children are the future of dog showing and they welcome the support of the Finals.
Brooklyn, Olivia, and Eva’s final chance to show Mrs Chato was a challenge they undertook with skill, sportsmanship, and style, displaying expert handling of their chosen breed and wonderful gentle hands on their leads. at the DOGS NSW grounds. It was a very successful morning. The temperature was perfect and the participants were a happy, competent and supportive group.
The Endurance Test was judged by Ms Kirsten Molloy NSW. The dogs were vet checked by Dr Jennifer Green BVSc and several volunteer vet students from Sydney Uni.
There were sixteen qualifying teams on the day, made up of dogs of all shapes and sizes, handled by members of all ages. A hearty congratulations to these members and their newly ET-titled dogs.
A lot of training and preparation goes into ensuring a dog is fit enough to complete the endurance test and pass the necessary vet checks.
Conducted over 20km the ET commences with a vet exam to check the dogs heart rate, temperature, paw pads and overall condition of the dog. This is followed by a willingness test involving a short heeling pattern with a halt and an on-lead recall. The dog is then required to gait on lead alongside the handler, either riding a bike or running, at an average speed of 10km/h.
Images by Samantha Ibbott-Cordi & Gabriele Loft
The distance is split into three segments of 8km, 6km and 6km, with rest breaks of 15 minutes, 20 minutes and 15 minutes. The dog is vet checked between each segment and again at the completion of the 20km. There is a second willingness test at the end to check that the dog is still happy to work with the handler.
If you are interested in a future Endurance Test entries are open to Dogs Australia registered dogs, (main, limited, associate & sporting register), aged between 2 and 8 years. It is a great opportunity to get you and your dog in tip top condition and is always a welcoming, fun, friendly morning out in the fresh air.
The NSW Retrieving and Field Trial (RAFT) Championship sub-committee held the Retrieving Trial Championship on the 31st August and 1st September. The event was held in the Hunter Valley at Tocal Agricultural College following the successful use of these grounds in 2023.
Six runs were held over the weekend with teams competing from Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and a strong local field from NSW. The judges, Noel and Kate Eltringham from Victoria, tested the dogs on all the retrieving concepts on land and water in sunny but windy conditions.
From the 21 dogs entered there were seven Labrador Retrievers that completed the trial showing drive, obedience and game finding ability.

Vets debunk Myth
Words: Xantha Leatham Deputy Science Editor For The Daily Mail
Are designer dogs really healthier? Vets debunk myth and say trendy crossbreeds including Cockapoos, Labradoodles, and Cavapoos are NOT superior to purebreeds.
Designer dogs including Cockapoos, Labradoodles and Cavapoos are no healthier than purebreds, according to the world’s largest study into the issue. In the past decade demand for crossbreed dogs has increased significantly, with many now surpassing the popularity of their parent breeds.
For example, last year there were more Cockapoo dogs owned in the UK than either Cocker Spaniel or Poodle. Much of this meteoric public demand has been driven by a widespread belief that designer crossbreeds are a healthier option. However, a new study has revealed that, specifically for the Cockapoo, Labradoodle and Cavapoo, the risk for the 57 most common disorders did not differ between these three most common designer crossbreeds and their purebred parent breeds 86 per cent of the time.
The research, carried out by the Royal Veterinary College in London, involved a survey of more than 9,400 UK dog owners. They found the risk of vomiting and diarrhoea was higher in all three designer crossbreeds compared to their shared parent breed, the Poodle.
All three designer crossbreeds also had a higher chance of ear infections than their non-Poodle parent breeds. And, ironically, Cockapoos, a firm favourite for families with pet allergies, had a higher likelihood of itchy skin than their parent breeds, a disorder often caused by allergies.
When considering purchasing a dog, the researchers encourage owners to instead consider other factors such as expected health issues, suitability of the breed’s size, behavioural and husbandry needs for their lifestyle, and likely temperament to decide upon their chosen breed.
Overall, the findings show that the risk did not differ at all for the majority of disorders between the designer crossbreds and their parent breeds, the researchers said.
The findings also largely debunk beliefs held by some people that designer crossbreeds are somehow damaged or defective by not having the ‘pure’ blood of purebred dogs and must therefore be less healthy than the parent purebred breeds.
Based on these results, when considering purchasing a dog, the researchers encourage owners to instead consider other factors such as expected health issues, suitability of the breed’s size, behavioural and husbandry needs for their lifestyle, and likely temperament to decide upon their chosen breed.
Dr Rowena Packer, senior author of the paper, said: ’The popularity of designer crossbreeds, particularly Poodle crosses, has boomed over the past decade in the UK.
‘With cute teddy bear-like features, their aesthetic appeal to many households is clear. ‘However, our previous research discovered that many are purchased based on assumed characteristics that are not well-evidenced, such as perceptions they are hypoallergenic, good with children, and have good health.
‘This study has demonstrated that although the health of designer Poodle-crosses is no worse than their parent breeds’, it is also no better. ‘This means that owners should still be strongly focused on purchasing from breeders who prioritise health and temperament over looks in their breeding decisions, and not to assume their puppy will automatically be healthy due to being a crossbreed.
‘Prospective owners should be extremely mindful that the popularity of Poodle-crosses means they are at high risk of coming from poor welfare sources such as puppy farms and illegal imports to meet this demand, which could negatively influence their future health and welfare.’
The findings were published in the journal Plos One: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0306350
