Chairman's REPORT

A welcome to all the interstate exhibitors and international Judges for the 2025 Advance Sydney Royal Easter Show.

This year’s Advance Sydney Royal Easter Show Dog Section entries, including all disciplines, are over 3000, approximately 10 per cent higher than 2024. Entries for the FCI Sydney International, running in conjunction with the Royal, is approximately 1700 entries making this the largest FCI show held in Australia.

Congratulations to the Public Relations Committee on running the Canine Sports Spectacular which encourages so many people with interests in the abilities of different breeds of dogs to shine in so many areas, hopefully creating new members for DOGS NSW.

On the issues of compliance with Local Councils and, in particular, of concern most recently to some of our members in the Shellharbour Shire, was that the Shellharbour Council had originally recommended the Draft Keeping of Animals Policy to drop from four to three dogs per property. DOGS NSW made a written submission as a recommendation from the Media & Government Legislation Committee to Shellharbour Council and also I, as DOGS NSW President, along with DOGS NSW Senior Vice President & Executive Committee member, Sharon Hannigan, attended the Shellharbour Council meeting in person on 25 February. I addressed the meeting, along with DOGS NSW members, Mr Brad Wyers and Miss Tiarne Perkiss. Others who attended were:-

The policy originally included a reduction in the number of dogs allowed on a residential property from four to three. After considering the public feedback, Councillors decided to retain the limit at four instead of three.

Members need to show our DOGS NSW profile by attending these important Council meetings and keeping up to date on the keeping of animals in their area as these policies are becoming more widespread and affect all of our members.

At the time writing this, the flooding in Northern NSW has started and I hope that our Northern NSW members are safe, and that we can assist wherever possible.

Remembering John Rowles

27 July 1946 – 25 August 2024

There was a good hearted mischief about John Rowles that was reflected in his humour and whose mischievous traits could be traced back to when John was a young boy. The story goes that on one occasion John’s father, Jack, heard a request over the PA system, for him to retrieve his son from up a tree that was adjacent to a dog ring, because of the strange noises coming from above that were upsetting the dogs. On another occasion a military band that attended the Victorian Royal Show, to play in the arena, went missing. It was discovered that a boy named John Rowles had locked them all in the toilets when they went to get changed for their performance.

John grew to be a 4th generation Terrier man, whose knowledge of dogs was immense. His family had over 100 years of breeding Fox Terriers behind them and had brought the breed with them to Australia by boat originally. He became the 8th All Breeds Judge in the family line and the 12th Fox Terrier judge. John’s relatives were founding members of the VCA (now Dogs Victoria), and he had the perfect pedigree to succeed in the world of canine breeding and judging. John also stewarded and was ring announcer at the Sydney Royal Show.

John judged in many countries and was one of the first Australian pioneers to judge in India in the very early stages of their dog show development. He bred and exhibited multiple Australian and Supreme Champions under the Selwor prefix.

John was President of the Southern Highlands Kennel and Obedience Club for approximately 25 years. He was also a life member of Southern Highlands, Liverpool (where he was President) and Heidelberg dog clubs. John was founding Treasurer of the Junior Kennel Club of Victoria.

John was generous with both his time and knowledge, mentoring and assessing many aspirant judges throughout the years. His larrikin humour emerged when asked by an aspirant about the hallmarks of the smooth Fox Terrier. He replied, ‘Bone, substance, symmetry. Ears, eyes, tail, short back and the face.’ The aspirant said, ‘The face?’ ‘Yes’, said John with a grin, ‘This face’, indicating his own.

An ‘Inaugural Introduction to Dog Shows’ Workshop

The Field Spaniel Club of NSW hosted an Introduction to Dog Shows Workshop on Sunday 16 February at DOGS NSW Grounds in Ring 1.

The stage was set for new people to learn about dog shows with the bunting up, a well-stocked refreshments stand, plus cookies and dog treats on stand-by. We had 32 attendees and dogs of all breeds in attendance, to learn about the world of dog shows. It was an informative and fun introduction to dog showing.

Along with Kaysa Spaniels Dog Training, the fun and informative session was all about the exciting world of dog shows. Whether someone was brand new to dog shows or just curious about what goes on, this event was perfect for all dog lovers.

We stepped into the exciting world of dog shows during the workshop. The 3 hour event introduced everyone to all the essential components of dog showing, including training techniques, basic handling skills, grooming advice, and an overview of the show process. Whether attendees planned to show their dogs professionally or just wanted to have fun in the ring, the workshop gave them the knowledge and confidence to start.

They could learn about the different categories, the judging criteria, and what it takes to compete in these prestigious events. They also received insider tips from an experienced handler and trainer who shared their knowledge and expertise.

Do come along to these Dog Workshops and meet fellow dog enthusiasts, ask questions, and maybe even discover a new passion for showing off your furry friend. ~ WORDS: KATH PURKIS

The instructors tailored their guidance to each participant’s age and experience, ensuring everyone, including my children, gained valuable insights.

The hands-on nature of the workshop, allowing us to repeat exercises, was particularly beneficial. This approach not only enhanced our learning but also sparked an interest in junior handling for my daughters. Their new-found enthusiasm has led to requests for participation in upcoming breed specialty shows around Easter.”

About The Field Spaniel Club of NSW:

The Field Spaniel Club of NSW is Australia’s first Field Spaniel Club. This club is for Field Spaniel owners and breeders and Field Spaniel enthusiasts throughout Australia.

Our aim is to preserve and promote this rare breed through a range of activities for breeders and owners alike, including Championship Shows, fun and information days for pet owners (and would-be owners) and a range of performance events including Scentwork, SprintDog™ and other sports.

Hugh has been involved in many facets of the dog world, and in 2004, was awarded Life Membership of the Royal NSW Canine Council for his service to the purebred dog world.

Some of our current Committee and Life members gathered in February 2025 for a special dinner in Hugh’s honour and presented him with a memento of his fabulous 50 years as President.

The David Roche Gallery is excited to announce the inaugural Best in Show 2025: Australian Photographic Dog Prize, established as a biannual prize to celebrate Australian dogs and pay homage to the legacy of its founder, David Roche AM (1930-2013), pictured below right with his Kerry Blue Terrier.

From David’s famous Fermoy Kennels in North Adelaide, his dogs won Best in Show nationally and internationally between the 1950s to the early 2010s. Now David Roche Gallery has created a prize opportunity to celebrate the important role dogs play in our lives.

4. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

I have had the privilege of serving on the Board of DOGS NSW since 2016 and, for the past seven years, I have been part of the Executive Committee. I was first elected President in November 2021, serving until April 2023, and was re-elected to the position in November 2023.

The years from 2021 to 2024 have presented numerous challenges. Among the most significant were the ongoing threats posed by Government legislation, which cast a shadow over much of the optimism within the dog community. In addition, unprecedented weather conditions disrupted our grounds and the COVID-19 pandemic severely limited our

ability to engage in regular weekly activities, which are central to the social and recreational lives of our members and their dogs.

Looking ahead, key areas that must be addressed for the continued success of DOGS NSW include:-

• Membership growth and retention: It is crucial to sustain and increase our membership base.

• Strategic planning: We must develop a long-term strategy that considers our location and embraces opportunities for innovation to ensure a positive future for the organisation.

Currently, I serve as the Chair of the Media & Government Legislation Committee. Along with the Committee members, I am actively engaging with prominent members of the NSW Parliament to emphasise that DOGS NSW is the leading authority for responsible dog breeders in New South Wales.

Despite the challenges, our organisation has achieved positive financial results, concluding the 2023/2024 financial year with a strong performance. The operational management of DOGS NSW has resulted in a substantial financial surplus, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Finance Committee, particularly the Chairman, Ross Sinclair, Operations Manager, Anthony Khamis, and Financial Accountant, Kenny Liu.

Our Office is recognised as one of the most efficient in Australia, particularly in terms of processing registrations, transfers and other administrative tasks. The staff, who handlethe wide range of responsibilities within the organisation, deserve full credit for this achievement.

I would also like to extend special recognition to our Company Secretary, Virginia Gagan-Wilson, who manages a wide array of tasks, from member complaints and Committee communications to preparing the extensive monthly Board meeting agenda.

Finally, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the members of the Board, who volunteer their time and expertise for the betterment of our organisation.

The RNSWCC Representatives at the Annual General Meeting held on 15 October 2023 were Mrs L Brown and Mrs C Rafton.

The Directors appointed by RNSWCC who attended the Board Meeting held on 15 October 2023 were Mrs L Brown and Mrs C Rafton.

The Directors appointed by RNSWCC who attended the Special Board Meetings held via Zoom Conferencing on 10 February 2024 and 15 June 2024 were Mrs L Brand and Mr S Oliver.

Mrs L Brown was a Director from July 2023 to November 2023. Mrs C Rafton was a Director from July 2022 to November 2023.

Mrs L Brand was a Director from November 2023 to June 2024. Mr S Oliver was a Director from November 2023 to June 2024.

During the period 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024, the RNSWCC received 37 new complaints which proceeded to the Chair of the DOGS NSW Disputes Assessment Panel, with the following outcomes:-

7. CONSIDERATION OF FINANCIAL REPORT – FOR THE YEAR-END 30 JUNE 2024

The President advised that Mr Ross Sinclair, Chair of the Finance Committee, is currently overseas and, therefore, was unable to speak to the Financial Report. Notwithstanding that, he had previously indicated that we have a clean set of accounts and congratulated the Financial Accountant and the Management Team for their efforts.

The President invited Director Christina Rafton to speak to the Financial Statements in Mr Sinclair’s absence.

• Revenue results increased marginally at 0.32% without the interest income.

• A favourable cash rate saw positive interest results.

• Expenses for the year were down slightly by 2% with a major reduction to postage and journal expenses.

• Working capital remains stable.

• Expenses for the organisation will continue to rise in line with the CPI pressures and increased pressures from utilities and business expenses.

• Continued focus on revenue streams and strategic directions will continue to manage the fiscal environment.

The President thanked Director Rafton for her report.

The Financial Report for the year end 30 June 2024, as published in the 2023/2024 RNSWCC Ltd Annual Report, was considered by the meeting.

As no questions on the 2023/2024 Audited Report were received by the due date, Auditors, Morris and Batzloff, were not in attendance.

Suitability

The Shih Tzu is an ideal pet; it has a fabulous temperament and is suited to all ages. Daily exercise is not essential as it can be exercised through a simple game of fetch. It enjoys a walk or just running in a fenced yard. It is a long-lived breed with 15 years being the average, but with loving care many will exceed this.

Maintenance

The Shih Tzu requires regular grooming, show dogs must be constantly groomed. Faces must be kept clean, particularly around the eyes and mouth. While coat textures vary in the breed, the Shih Tzu’s coat has the tendency to matt overnight so it must be kept clean and free from tangles.

Health

Responsible breeders have eliminated many problems within the breed, so many health issues relate to the general care of dogs. Eyes, ears and teeth must be kept clean, otherwise you may have problems requiring veterinary attention.

Both umbilical and inguinal hernias are no longer a major problem in the breed, but they do exist. Luxating patellas and hip dysplasia have been found in the breed. Responsible breeders have eliminated those breeding lines.

Saturday to Sunday, 1-2 February 2025

2025 saw the 80th Anniversary for the Wollongong and District Kennel Club ‘Take Me To The Beach’ Shows. Wollongong and District Kennel Club is one of the oldest All Breeds Clubs in NSW. Next to the beach and walking tracks, the weekend is looked forward to by interstate and local exhibitors alike. Located at the Shamrocks Rugby Union Ground, Woonona, the shows are a mere 30 metres from the surf and sand.

Our usual theme of beachwear for exhibitors, Judges and Officials, saw boardshorts, floral shirts, sarongs, hats and sunnies being the approved attire! It is always great to see all exhibitors, stewards and Judges get into the theme. The result is a relaxed, fun weekend with lots of laughs and exhibitors enjoying the beach with their favourite pooches. We had fantastic weather and the dogs loved their beach swims.

The entry was almost 500 on Saturday which proves that exhibitors love the regional venues. Our Judges got into the theme and commented on the great atmosphere in and around the judging rings. For our 80th Shows we added two international Judges, Mr Agus Wardhana (Indonesia) and Mr Stanley Shen (Singapore). Stanley is an international Lhasa Apso Specialist and the Lhasa Apso feature brought a great entry of the breed.

In addition, there was a special rosette donated for each Best In Terrier Group, in honour of John Rowles, Selwor Fox Terriers. John loved the beach shows. He always won a Best Dressed Exhibitor prize for his non-matching boardies and shirts as well as sporting sunburn on Sunday, (even though he would be adamant he

The Club added ‘New Exhibitor Sweepstakes’ again. Alison Cowin and Jim Black were our sweepstakes Mentor Judges and ensured every exhibitor was given valuable tips and tricks to bring out the best in their dogs. A special thank you to Alison and Jim. There was also the 80th Anniversary cake cut just before General Specials.

The licenced bar was again a feature, and with alfresco seating, the Shamrocks Club members cooked their usual mean barbeque and threw in some friendly banter for free.

With a walking and bike track next to the ground, the shows are always a drawcard for the general public. The Club would like to thank all the exhibitors who answered questions and chatted to the families who came to the show looking at the different breeds for their next family pet. Additionally, there were a number of new exhibitors who are now keen to get to more shows due to the positive experience they received from other exhibitors. Well done!

Our major sponsor, Purina Proplan supplied the shows with fantastic product. Thank you for your generous sponsorship, it really is the icing on the cake!. Thanks must also go to our vendor, Show Aquipment and to the Shamrocks Rugby Union Club. Without their support and the great venue, the Wollongong and District Kennel Club ‘Take Me To The Beach’ Shows would not be the success that they are.

2026 will see the Club host the Illawarra Region Shows again. This means we become a six show cluster. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

CANA calls for Pet-Friendly Aged Care

No

one in aged care should face losing their cherished pet

With 95% of people believing that pets contribute to improved health outcomes for older people, having access to pet-friendly aged care should be far more common, says national animal welfare charity Companion Animal Network Australia (CANA or Australia CAN).

Yet, as of 2023, only 18% of aged care facilities allow residents to keep pets, and just 9% of older pet owners living at home, who rely on government-funded Home Care Packages (HCPs), receive any assistance with their pet’s care, according to CANA’s 2023 Aged Care Survey: Status of Pets in Aged Care.

As a result, pet surrenders due to life changes, such as moving into aged care or struggling to meet a pet’s needs continue to rise. Many older Australians lose not only a cherished companion but also the daily joy, comfort and sense of purpose that a pet provides.

CANA’s 2025 Pet Friendly Aged Care Survey is now live, and everyone is encouraged to participate to help shape policies that keep older adults and their beloved pets together.

“CANA is calling on all Australians to seriously consider what this means for their families and how it could personally affect them at some point in the future,” says Trish Ennis, CEO of CANA, which represents companion animal welfare organisations across Australia.

“No one should have to say goodbye to a beloved pet simply because they’re growing older or need extra care.”

Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world, yet, for many older adults, whether living at home, in a retirement village or an aged care home, access to pet companionship remains a challenge.

“Through our Pet Friendly Aged Care program , we work to preserve this critical bond, keeping people and pets together for as long as it benefits their health and wellbeing,” says Ms Ennis

“For many older adults, having a pet is life-changing. Numerous studies show that pets reduce loneliness, stress, pain and anxiety, while encouraging social engagement and physical activity. Yet, outdated policies and a lack of support mean too many older people are forced to part with their cherished animals, despite still being able to enjoy life with them. Formal support for pet care within aged care services would benefit many more older Australians.”

Case Study ~ Olly the Maltese is Barry’s treasure for life

When Barry, aged 86 years from Wagga NSW, moved into aged care, he could no longer care for Olly. Olly, a 9 year old Maltese had been with Barry since he was a puppy and lived with him on the Sunshine Coast. When he moved into aged care, his son took him in, but could no longer care for Olly due to his work.

“When Tara, the General Manager at BUPA Aged Care New Farm, met Olly, she decided to adopt him! She loves Olly and that’s the main thing, she treats him like he has always been hers.” says Barry.

“Tara brings Olly to visit me frequently. We sit in the sun, take small walks and take naps in the chair together. Olly loves the attention and the treats he gets here! I am so grateful I get to see my little mate. I couldn’t be without him. He is a treasure and makes me so happy.” says Barry.

Case Study ~ Pets are imperative in the lives of older people, saving lives ~ Joanne NSW Joanne, 75 years, owes her life to Frankie, her Delta Therapy Dog, for detecting her stage 4 melanoma and alerting the neighbours when she fell twice and needed an ambulance. Today, Frankie shares her healing magic with others at nursing homes, hospitals, schools and workplaces.

Frankie came into my life about seven years ago as an 8-weekold puppy and at the age of six months immediately detected my stage 4 metastasised cancer. I was given 12 weeks to live! With incredible medical treatment and constant support of Frankie, I’m still alive!

Frankie is amazing and has an uncanny ability to know when someone is sick. When we visit hospitals, particularly oncology units, she can tell when someone is going to die. During a visit with a patient, she normally sits on the bed and snuggles with them, giving them love and releasing oxytocin into their system. If someone is about to die, she sits towards the end of the bed and watches them. Sure enough, the person will pass in the next 24 hours.

We once visited a patient, Michael, with a severe stroke and for weeks he didn’t acknowledge Frankie or me. Finally, one day his hand started to move and after six months of rehab he left the stroke unit. The first word he spoke was ‘Frankie’. His family wrote a letter saying without Frankie and me, Michael would not have survived.

Us old folks who live alone and are not as well as we should be physically and mentally, we must have a companion animal. The proof is in the pudding.

The Competition and Consumer Act came into force

DOGS

on 19 April 2011. Certain provisions of the Act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the Act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the Act are strictly complied with. Advertisers are warned that it is their responsibility to be able to substantiate any statements or claims made in advertisements. In cases of doubt, advertisers are asked to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.

DISPUTES

From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW.

Members are requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
