18 SPOTLIGHT
The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog has a natural aptitude in the working and control of cattle. It is a loyal and courageous breed, and above all, devoted to its owner. The ideal Stumpy owner should be a committed, active and experienced dog owner, who will keep his Stumpy mentally and physically active, due to the breed’s intelligence and high energy levels.

Her Excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales
In this edition of DOGS NSW Magazine we highlight the Christmas Show, held on Saturday 22 December, and presented by the DOGS NSW Public Relations Events Committee. A wonderfully festive time was had by all, with all the trimmings of Christmas gifts for the kids, fun competitions and Santa’s arrival by sled, drawn by the Siberian Huskies. Committee Chair John Bryson reports on the event on page 10, along with photos supplied by Daniel Harmis Photography.
The Dalwood Children’s Home Charity Show aids in the wonderful work done by The Dalwood Spilstead Services Home Support Program, and this year’s event was held on 23-24 November in heatwave conditions. Coverage of the event by Christine Mann commences on page 22, accompanied by images from photographers Cabal Canine Candids, Noeleen Marmont Photography and Sandra Patterson Photography.
Over the past few weeks, DOGS NSW grounds have experienced searing temperatures and torrential rain, which certainly puts a strain on the team of DOGS NSW Grounds staff. Kate Davidson interviewed Grounds Supervisor Chris Gedzyk, who discusses the challenges in ensuring the grounds and facilities are in peak condition throughout the year. Please turn to page 8.
Next month the DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee will introduce a new community event to DOGS NSW grounds, the ‘Canine Sports Spectacular’. Not only a fun-filled day, it’s an opportunity to introduce more people to the world of dogs, try out a fun, new, dog sport, build community and grow DOGS NSW. From seasoned trainers to families looking for their next best friend, there’s a dog and sport for all to enjoy. For more information go to page 30.
For those members attending the 2025 Sydney Royal Dog Show, the RAS have supplied us with some updates on what to expect this year and tips on being prepared for the show. Please turn to page 14.
The spotlight feature this month is the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, a courageous breed with total devotion to its owner. Turn to page 18 for more information.
Winners of the December Competition to win a copy of ‘BARK’ were Deirdre Masters, Jenny Byrnes, Kelly Spuur, Len & Yvonne Hornsey and Tracey Bonanno.

In Memory of Dulcie & Peter Goldstien
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Dulcie Goldstien in October 2024, aged 98 years, who was a life member of the RAS, a judge at the Royal Agricultural Show and a director at the RSPCA for many years. Dulcie also had a successful dog training school which was started by Jack Goldstien a long time ago. She was also an Honorary Member of DOGS NSW and had been a member since 1958.
I also regret to inform you of the sudden passing of her son, my brother, Peter Goldstien on 4 December 2024, who was also highly respected in the dog world and who was loved by so many family members and friends. Peter, apart from his clerical status, has been revered in the development in NSW and Australia of dog obedience training and trialling. Peter was a senior ANKC Obedience Judge of many years and a member of DOGS NSW for 50 years. His very recent passing is a serious loss to the whole of the DOGS NSW community.
The world is a much sadder place without them both.
Beverley Davey (Daughter of Dulcie and sister to Peter)
Wendy Downing Memorial Trophy
Wendy Downing was a force of nature – not just a talented administrator and dog sport leader, but also someone with the rare knack of raising and conditioning consistent performers on the field from a diversity of prefixes.
The DOGS NSW Sporting Committee, with the help of Wendy’s friends, commissioned a trophy featuring a Whippet statue from Wendy’s collection, to be awarded in her memory.
The winner of the Wendy Downing Memorial Trophy for 2024 is FCH. Warley Allez (pictured in action below)
Allez, the Whippet is proudly owned, conditioned and handled by Sheyleigh Walsh, see pictured right receiving the trophy.
Congratulations Sheyleigh and Allez! They attended every NSW Lure Coursing event during the 2024 season. Allez, a highly competitive Sighthound has won multiple Best In Field awards this year. Consistency in performance also saw Allez gain the points required to be recognised as a Field Champion.

FEATURE
An Inside Look Grounds Maintenance at DOGS NSW
Words: Kate Davidson
DOGS NSW is a hub for dog enthusiasts, hosting events, training sessions and activities that demand a well-maintained and functional environment. Behind the scenes, Chris Gedzyk, the Grounds Supervisor, plays a pivotal role in ensuring the grounds and facilities are in peak condition. With five years of experience in the position, Chris leads a dedicated team of grounds staff who work tirelessly to meet the DOGS NSW’s high standards.
We spoke with Chris about his responsibilities, the challenges he faces and the exciting projects underway at DOGS NSW.
The Role of a Grounds Supervisor Chris is responsible for the upkeep of DOGS NSW’s expansive grounds and buildings, ensuring everything is prepared for shows, training and other activities. He is supported by a skilled team, who include:
• Dave Hayes, who has been with DOGS NSW for six years.
• Matt Tyne, a veteran staff member with 13 years of service.
• Fredy Icao, who joined the team 6-8 months ago and works weekends. Fredy’s dual role involves cleaning and learning the skills required to provide additional support during weekends, freeing up more manpower for weekday tasks.
“The main focus of my job,” Chris explains, “is maintaining the grounds while managing the impacts of weather and associated costs. It’s all about finding solutions to ensure the grounds remain in top condition throughout the year.” Images: Above (left to right): Fredy Icao, Matt Tyne, Chris Gedzyk and Dave Hayes.
Addressing Hydrophobic Soil
One of the greatest challenges faced by Chris and his team is the hydrophobic nature of the clay soil on the grounds, which repels water rather than absorbing it. This creates significant drainage issues.
Images Below (left): Rings after fertilising; (right) End result after fertilising.
“To give you an idea,” Chris says, “after rain, the car parks are often saturated with water because the soil simply doesn’t absorb it. Maintaining the grounds to a standard requires a vast amount of water - 1,500 litres per ring, twice a week. To make this process more efficient, we’ve been working to improve the soil’s absorbency.”
Over the past two years, the team has focused on enhancing the main rings by changing the soil’s structure. This involves applying a wetting agent during the grass-growing process, enabling better water absorption and reducing the overall water required to maintain the grounds.
Upcoming projects
Chris shared several exciting projects planned for the coming months:
• Road Repairs:
• German Shepherd Ring:
Over the Christmas period, they have applied soil management techniques to the German Shepherd rings to improve the turf coverage. Continental selective herbicides will be applied, as needed, into the new year in addition with granular fertilisers.
Image (left): Levelling and top dressing of German Shepherd Area.
• SprintDog™ Area:
A dedicated sprinting track for dogs has been developed, requiring a minimum of 100 metres to run and 30 metres to safely catch the dogs. Gates have been installed at the start of the track and lighting has also been added.
Repairs to roads and potholes around the grounds will also take place. 30 tonne of material has been stock-piled throughout the grounds
Balancing Maintenance & Events
Maintaining the grounds is a constant balancing act. Chris and his team work around the weather, events and campers, adjusting their plans as needed.
“Depending on the time of year, we’re either planting seed, applying selective herbicides to control weeds or pre emergents to keep weeds from germinating, applying fertiliser, insecticides or focusing on general maintenance,” Chris explains. “For example, in winter, we plant rye grass, which thrives in cooler weather. It takes a minimum of eight weeks to grow and involves mowing, applying growth regulators, fertiliser and water. By spring, the grass is in perfect condition for shows.”
In summer, the focus shifts to maintaining the grounds at a high standard for events. Chris also works closely with clubs and show committees to anticipate and address potential issues in advance, ensuring everything runs smoothly. Please contine on page 29

DOGS NSW PUBLIC RELATIONS EVENTS COMMITTEE
Christmas 2024 Championship Show & Party Celebrations
The DOGS NSW Public Relations Events Committee hosted the DOGS NSW Members, Families and Friends Christmas Party on Saturday 21 December 2024.
Despite being only a few days out from Christmas Day itself, the night was well attended and we had the best entry for a single show event for 2024 at Orchard Hills.
Everyone arrived after lunch to set up the event and noted that the ground staff had worked very hard in preparation for the event. The sun was shining as members, full of Christmas cheer, started slowly arriving to get their dogs and gazebos ready. Carols were playing in the background and the atmosphere was electric.
The afternoon flew by, getting ready for the kids’ events, putting up decorations on the tree and preparing for Santa’s arrival. This year we had an outstanding number of members decorating their gazebos to add to the already festive atmosphere.
We had some wonderful donations and support this year from members:
• Royal Canin
• Scott Ross
• Benjamin Black
• Daniel Harmis Photography
• Robyn Foster & Arcticpalace Siberian Huskies
• DOGS NSW Staff
The evening event commenced with a Welcome to Country and an introduction to the evening by Events Committee Chair John Bryson.
Special Thanks to our panel of Victorian Judges:
• Toy Group – Mr John Hutchison
• Terrier Group - Mrs Dianne Barclay
• Gundog Group- Dr Linda Beer
• Hound Group- Ms Sue Bennett
• Working Dog Group – Miss Janice Cook
• Utility Group - Mrs Faye Crooks
• Non-Sporting Group & General Specials – Mr Jonathon Marshall
As well as Reserve & Sweepstakes Judge – Mrs Trisha Cutler (NSW)
Thank you to our capable stewards along with Marilyn Parker on certificates. We were very aware of the tight timelines we were working to, but were pleased that the main attraction Santa Claus,
arrived right on 8.00pm in a sleigh pulled by Robyn Foster’s family and friends’ beautiful Siberian Reindeers. Robyn, thank you for an amazing job.
The kids’ fun activities, along with the gifts and lollies, were all greatly received, and the children looked to be having a great night. There was amazing face art created in the face painting area and the kids loved it!
On behalf of the committee, I would like to personally thank Susie Kearnes, our very hard-working Committee Secretary, for the hours of dedication, ensuring the event went smoothly, including helping Santa source all the gifts in their lovely themed gift bags. Susie really is the backbone of this event and her contribution is greatly appreciated. Thanks as well to Brigette Bryson, who, along with Daniel Harmis, did a lot of the heaving lifting on the night, including Daniel capturing so many amazing images.
Many thanks to Santa (Scott Ross) along with Chief elves Heather and Rachael Buxton (also raffle ticket sellers), as well as elves Dr Rebecca Braid, Penny Dalziel, Rebecca Boylson, Sue Boylson and Biddy Sutton.
Finally, the dedication of staff members Kerry Christofi and Abby Davis, who do so much behind the scenes. Thank you all for your ongoing assistance.

Join us at the 2025 Sydney Royal Dog Show
It’s been the ultimate Australian celebration of dogs for more than 150 years and 2025 is set to mark an historic expansion of the Sydney Royal Dog Show with global recognition.
With entries open, many Exhibitors would be aware of the introduction of the Sydney FCI International, but it’s the ‘why’ that’s at the centre of the exciting move to re-shape this year’s event. The prestige and history of the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show will always be paramount for the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW but offering new competition and further showcasing our breeds, especially to the many thousands of Show-goers is an opportunity with the future firmly in mind.
For conformation classes in 2025 it’s a chance for Exhibitors to show twice in the same day; on the Dogs Australia national judging stage and then in the afternoon under the distinguished Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) platform. FCI group judging will take place each afternoon with FCI General Specials on Monday April 21st ahead of the traditional ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show Best in Show Day.
Attracting Judges of excellence is something the RAS is extremely proud of, and there’s no exception in 2025. Our international conformation panel boasts Mr Svante Frisk from Sweden, Ms Bianca Sampaio-Teixeira and Mr Ricardo Torre-Simões from Brazil and Mr Ernesto Lara from Mexico. All are highly esteemed with a vast depth of experience we know Exhibitors will appreciate and benefit from.
From conformation and Sweepstakes to performance sports and every year we see entries grow and the level of competition and skills skyrocket. Obedience and Rally kick off the Show on Friday 11 April while it’ll be a high-octane curtain closer to the event with Agility including Gamblers and Jumping on Tuesday 22 April. The Festival of Dog Sports is back on selected evenings with competition in Trick Dog and Scent Works, and across all disciplines we’re fortunate to have a team of incredible Judges offer their time, expertise and encouragement to Exhibitors.
Royal Agricultural Society of NSW
Extra Highlights
Growing ever popular, ‘grooming’ will share centre stage on the final day of the Show in the ‘Dogs Australian Canine Grooming Championship’. Clubs are also encouraged to show off their breed to the multitudes of dog-loving Show-goers with a display on Breed Stall Day, Tuesday 22 April.
We’re also thrilled to have the Police Canine Team and the incredibly talented members of the Agility Dog Club of NSW wowing the crowds during lunchtimes.
Do you know a canine hero? The RAS Canine Hero Awards is a competition the RAS takes great pride in, and once again we’re on the search for two ordinary dogs who’ve proved to be extraordinary over the past year. Thanks to the Australasian Animal Registry we have prizes of $1500 cash to award to a ‘Service Dog’ and a ‘Companion Dog’ who have displayed remarkable bravery, devotion or commitment to humans in a single act or over a period of time.
The Sydney Royal Dog Show is 12-day showcase but preparing for it is a yearlong endeavour, for both the organisers and in many cases our Exhibitors too. We encourage you to show your support by entering and coming along to share knowledge, catch up with friends and celebrate the dogs we dedicate such a big part of our lives to.
Attending the Show
It’s all about planning! make a list, then check it twice! Some Exhibitors like to pack their car the night before, so, when you do don’t forget crates and trolleys, benching chains, water, food bowls, chairs, portable fans, grooming gear and bedding for the bench.
You’ll receive an exhibitor manual along with your tickets and passes, so please ensure you read this for crucial information such as bench sizes and directions to the pavilion. A board (no larger than 450mm x 150mm) displaying the registered Kennel and/or the dog’s name and the official prize cards and ribbons for the Show may be placed over the benches. You may bring

The pavilion doesn’t open before 6.30am and entry will not be permitted before this time. Benching is any time between 6.30am and 9.00am, and you will enter the Showground at Gate 10 where you will be directed to a drop off zone at Gate 11, approximately 50 metres from the pavilion. You can park in this area for up to 10 minutes, drop off your dogs, equipment and helper then move your car to the car park.
You will receive two One-Day Entry Passes in your pack; the second ticket is to enable you to bring someone with you to help. Security at Gate 10 should take the One-Day pass from your helper who will enter the grounds at the Gate 11 drop off. The driver should keep their ticket and hand it in when they re-enter the Showground on foot after parking the car.
There is a shuttle bus every ten minutes from the carpark that drops you off at Gate 9. Many Exhibitors like to walk one or more of the dogs back with them for some exercise before benching. The walk from the carpark is approximately 600 metres, just don’t forget to take along some bags in case your dog needs to toilet on the way.
Exhibitor parking should ideally be purchased upon entry to the competition and will be located at P5A for all Exhibitors. No replacement tickets will be handed out if you enter the wrong parking station. Your bench number appears on your Bench Slip/ Confirmation of Entry Slip but be aware this will NOT allow entry into the Show. You will also receive a green ‘Dashboard Slip’ in your pack which will allow you access to the Gate 11 drop off zone near the pavilion.
Please note that under no condition are dogs to be left in cars or trailers in the carpark. Temperatures are often high during Showtime and quickly climb even higher in carparks. If any dogs are found in carparks, security, the Police, the RSPCA and the Domestic Animals Section will be notified which may result in

disciplinary action and Exhibitors being refused entry to future Royal Shows.
Benching
Due to the large number of breed entries for the Sydney Royal, benching is programmed through the RAS computer system, alphabetically, per breed. This means that if you are showing more than one breed in a day, and especially if they are different sizes, you will likely find yourself allocated benches in different parts of the pavilion. Please contact us with your details so we can organise for all your dogs to be benched together.
In breeds with large numbers, it is very difficult to change benching numbers on the day, we will help as much as we can and it also may be possible to find someone willing to swap with you.
Dogs should never be left unattended at benches. While it is unlikely someone would attempt to steal your dog, there are risks including the dog becoming caught up in its lead or getting into an altercation with another dog. If you need to leave your bench, ask a neighbour to watch over your dog(s). We encourage Exhibitors to have crates and trolleys at their benches which will keep your dog secure. As long as other Exhibitors can walk past your equipment, you are welcome to have them in the benching area.
Valuables
The bench area is restricted to Exhibitors only and there is approximately one metre between the public walkway fencing and your benches. All valuables should be kept out of sight, and with you at all times. There are lockers located outside the Dog Pavilion and Howie Café to secure valuables if required and Exhibitors are urged to inform the Dog Office if they feel anyone is acting suspiciously. We do have volunteers throughout the pavilion but during busy times they cannot be ‘everywhere’.
Grooming
You MUST bring your own grooming supplies and we encourage Exhibitors to bring their own grooming tables. The Plush Puppy grooming area has dryers and standard grooming tables, but these facilities are suitable for small and medium breeds only. Power points are limited but Exhibitors can groom at their bench while being mindful of other breeds nearby.
Drug Testing
To protect the integrity of Australia’s largest dog show, the 2025 ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show will once again be conducting random drug testing. If your dog is undergoing any treatment whatsoever you must fill out a Treatment Notification Form (TNF) and submit it to the dog office as soon as possible. It must be submitted prior to 8.30am on the day of Showing.
There are several prohibited substances that are tested for, some of which may be necessary for the dog’s health and welfare. If known in advance, the dog may be given permission to be exhibited by the Veterinary Committee which examines the forms. If no form is submitted however, and the dog is tested and found to be positive, it may result in disciplinary action that could see you lose your title, ribbons and prizes.
A Social Event
Domestic Animals & Other Highlights
If you have some time during your day and someone to mind your dog, you might like to check out the Pet Pavilion in Hall 3 where we showcase our other Domestic Animals competitions. It truly is a celebration of all creatures great and small with Rabbits, Cavies (Guinea Pigs), Cats, Rats, Aviary Birds, Frogs and Reptiles, all competing for Sydney Royal glory.
Of course, the Grand Parades are always a Show highlight, and we endeavour to ensure that dogs are front and centre of each one. In 2025 they will take place on Saturday 12 April, Monday 14 April and Saturday 19 April at approximately 4.30pm and we would love you to be involved. If your Club would like to participate, we need approximately 8 people and 8 dogs for each one. You get to keep the Sydney Royal Easter Show cap you wear for the parade and will also go in the draw to win free tickets to the 2026 Show.
Sydney Royal prides itself on being the ‘social Royal’ with Exhibitors encouraged to catch up with friends and meet new ones. The Howie Café is upstairs in the pavilion and there are also various vendors close by selling a wide variety of delicious Show food!
We do ask Exhibitors to remember that they are representing the ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show amongst the general public and to be sensible with alcohol consumption. The Sydney Royal has a strong RSA policy and does not condone drinking and driving. No bottles of alcohol are to be visible to the public and the assembly lawn and seating areas are alcohol-free zones.
Shopping
Our commercial stands will once again be available at the show for some retail therapy with new businesses coming on board in 2025. A handy trick is to visit the stands at the start of the day before the crowds for a chat with the Exhibitor and uninterrupted spending!
The DOGS NSW ‘Meet the Breed’ stand is, as always, one of our feature exhibits. It’s located in prime position on the commercial walk and is a great way to promote your breed. Contact DOGS NSW on info@dogsnsw.org.au to find out how you can contribute to educating the public on why pedigree and registered breeds make great family pets.
On a Final Note......
The Sydney Royal represents so many things, extraordinary history and prestige, the celebration of our rural traditions and all the fun and entertainment of the Show.
For those in the world of dogs it’s also one of the biggest highlights on the competition calendar and a chance to showcase excellence in breeding, training and showing.
The Sydney Royal Easter Show is the largest annual ticketed event in Australia, and the RAS hopes you’ll be a part of its history in 2025.

Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog
History
The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is the original Australian working dog, developed before the Australian Cattle Dog and the Australian Kelpie. Known affectionately as ‘the Stumpy’, it is a descendant from the Smithfield, a black and white rough-coated ‘bobtail’ dog that originally came from the Smithfield Markets in England. The Smithfield was used to herd just about everything from ducks and geese to cattle. Through selective breeding of bobtail dogs, the Stumpy was developed in the mid-19th century.
Appearance
The Stumpy is a medium-sized, well-proportioned working dog that is rather square in profile. The breed has two colours – blue and red. There can be no tan markings on the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. The Stumpy should be clean and tight and has a hard-bitten, rugged appearance. It is never fat but must be well-muscled, so as to endure long periods of arduous work.
Temperament
The Stumpy has a natural aptitude in the working and control of cattle. It is loyal, courageous and above all devoted to its owner, but may be reserved towards strangers. It is ever alert, watchful and obedient, and must be amenable to handle in the show ring.
Maintenance
In terms of grooming, the maintenance of the Stumpy is low. A weekly brush is all that is needed and a bath when necessary. In terms of exercise however, the Stumpy is high maintenance. It is an incredibly intelligent breed with high energy levels; if an Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog gets bored, it will find ways to entertain itself, such as digging holes or pulling washing off the line.
Health
In general, the Stumpy is a relatively healthy, robust breed. Prcd-PRA can occur in the breed; this condition causes progressive vision loss, however a DNA test is available. Non-form PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) can only be identified through eye examination, not through a DNA test. Examination of breeding stock by an ophthalmologist is recommended. Deafness can occur, for which a BAER test is available. Hip and elbow scoring should also be carried out to identify any dysplasia.

Suitability
This breed will not tolerate isolation or neglect; it craves family, activity and training. Unless the Stumpy is kept physically and mentally active, it will become destructive and unruly.
The ideal Stumpy owner is a committed, active and experienced dog owner. This is not a part-time breed. Early socialisation with dogs and people is recommended for a well-rounded companion. Training and firm leadership is essential. As a thinking dog, the Stumpy will compensate for any weakness in leadership by taking the place at the top of the pack. ‘Firm’ does not mean ‘hard’; the Stumpy’s eagerness to please you means that consistency, reinforcement and reward will go much further than punishment.

Dalwood Children’s Home CHARITY SHOWS
The Dalwood Children’s Home Charity Shows were held on the hot Spring weekend of 23-24 November 2024. Our thanks to the Exhibitors, Judges, Stewards, Sponsors and DOGS NSW for enabling us to donate $9,000 this year, to aid in the wonderful work done by The Dalwood Spilstead Services Home Support Program. The service provides volunteers, who assist families who may not have many supports around them and who may benefit from some additional “hands on” practical and emotional support in their home.
The Dalwood Children’s Home Charity Shows have been held for almost a century and we are pleased to be able to carry on the tradition started by the late Bill Spilstead.

Scientists discover dogs are entering a new phase of evolution ~ Story by
Ellyn Lapointe
For Dailymail.Com
Dogs could be undergoing a third wave of domestication driven by humans’ desire for pets that are friendly, calm and well-suited to a sedentary lifestyle.
Just decades ago, canines were seen as working animals, tasked with hunting pests, herding livestock and guarding their homes. But today, companionship is a much higher priority for pet owners.
Scientists have found that this shift has increased levels of a hormone responsible for social bonding in dogs, and especially in service dogs.
A study concluded that the hormone - oxytocin - is what drives dogs to seek contact with their owners. As humans domesticated wolves into the affectionate pets we know today, canines’ sensitivity to oxytocin increased, according to the researchers.
The study, conducted by researchers at Sweden’s Linköping University in 2017, investigated how dogs developed their unique ability to work together with humans, including their willingness to ‘ask for help’ when faced with a difficult problem.
The researchers suspected that the hormone oxytocin was involved, as it is known to play a role in social relationships between individuals. The effect of oxytocin depends on how well it binds to its receptor inside cells.
Previous studies have shown that variations in genetic material located close to the gene that codes for oxytocin receptors influences dogs’ ability to communicate. In other words, a dog’s social skills are partially ingrained in their genetics - specifically to the genes that control their sensitivity to oxytocin.
The researchers observed 60 Golden Retrievers as they attempted to lift a lid off a jar of treats, which was intentionally made impossible to open. They also collected DNA swabs from inside the dogs’ noses to determine which variant of the oxytocin receptor each one had.
The dogs performed this behavioral test twice, once after receiving a dose of oxytocin nasal spray, and once after receiving a dose of neutral saline nasal spray.
The results showed that dogs with a particular genetic variant of the receptor had a stronger reaction to the oxytocin spray than other dogs, and that the oxytocin dose made them more likely to ask for help than the saline dose. These findings offer insight into how domestication has altered the genes that influence dogs’ social skills.
Now, canine experts Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods said dogs’ behavioral traits are undergoing a third wave of domestication. As the role that these animals play in our lives has shifted from worker to companion, so has their behaviour, and perhaps their biology too.
Hare is an evolutionary-anthropology professor at Duke University and the director of the Duke Canine Cognition Center. Woods manages the centre’s Puppy Kindergarten program, which trains pups to become service dogs.
The Puppy Kindergarten also serves as a long-term research project to assess how different training strategies impact dogs’ behaviour and cognitive development.
Studying these puppies has convinced Woods and Hare that service dogs are ‘uniquely well adapted to life in the 21st century,’ they wrote in The Atlantic.
These dogs are ‘highly trained professionals’ who can assist their owner with tasks, remain calm and quiet when not actively working, and have uniquely friendly dispositions.
‘Unlike most pet dogs, service dogs are attracted to strangers, even as puppies,’ Woods and Hare wrote. ‘And increasing friendliness seems to have changed these dogs’ biology, just as it did thousands of years ago,’ the researchers added.
These highly trained dogs embody the traits of the ideal canine companion. They fit seamlessly into the lives of their owners and into the modern world.
‘Service dogs fit into the life of their person in a way that many able-bodied dog owners want their pets to fit into theirs,’ Woods and Hare wrote.
Even just a few decades ago, dogs were viewed very differently than they are today. They were working animals tasked with jobs like hunting, herding and guarding their home and the people in it - conditioned to be active and on alert.
Up until the 1990s, dogs spent most of their lives outside. Without the sprawling urbanization we know today, they had plenty of space to roam and explore.
‘If your dog slept on your bed, you would likely wake up covered in ticks or fleas,’ the researchers wrote. But today, more dogs live in densely populated areas, and consequently spend a lot more time inside. They also interact with unfamiliar dogs and people more frequently.
This shift has caused some behaviours that made dogs appealing to our ancestors to become maladaptive, Woods and Hare wrote. For example, ‘guarding against strange people and animals might make a dog more difficult to walk around the neighbourhood.’
FEATURE
‘Dogs that are more energetic, excitable, fearful, or anxious than average, are more likely to be relinquished to shelters, where they may struggle to find a new home,’ they added.
Woods and Hare believe that these new societal pressures are driving a third wave of canine domestication, with service dogs representing the most highly evolved members of the pack.
‘Service dogs may look like your average Labrador Retriever, but compared with military working dogs or even the average family Labrador, they are almost a different breed,’ the researchers wrote.
‘The differences between Canine Companion dogs and pet dogs also demonstrate how different a population of dogs can become in less than 50 years,’ they added.
Canine domestication dates back between 40,000 and 14,000 years. The first wave of domestication began when humans lived as foragers, and often left food waste on the outskirts of their settlements.
This prompted Westerners to begin breeding dogs for specific physical traits, ultimately creating most of the 200 dog breeds recognised by the American Kennel Club today, the researchers wrote.
‘As we enter a third wave of domestication - one that is more focused on tailoring dogs’ personalities to our modern world ‘
- Woods and Hare believe that humans should take an active role in facilitating this process. ‘
‘For the happiness of dogs and their owners, humans need to breed and train more dogs like service animals, embarking on a new wave of dog domestication to help them fit into the new world we have created,’ they wrote.
Wolves that took advantage of this predictable, energy-rich food source gained a survival edge, Woods and Hare say. ‘As a result, over generations, the animals’ attraction to humans replaced fear and aggression.’
The second wave began after the Industrial Revolution. During this time, the rising middle class wanted dogs that represented the good taste and disposable income of their owners.
(See image below, representing the Victorian period, where dogs were idealised, given royal sanction, and welcomed into the highest reaches of society. Royal patronage by Queen Victoria and her family cemented the idea that the English home was not quite complete without a pet dog.)1.

Achievements in 2024
An Inside Look Grounds Maintenance at DOGS NSW
Reflecting on the past year, Chris highlighted several key accomplishments:
• Boundary Fence Rebuild: After flooding damaged 600-700 metres of boundary fencing, the team successfully rebuilt it, reopening all areas of the grounds.
• Preventative Management: The team prioritised preventative measures, including fire compliance, security management, equipment maintenance and facility upgrades to enhance the overall experience for visitors.
Tools of the Trade
Maintaining the grounds requires an array of specialised equipment:
• A boom sprayer for chemical application. They have upgraded from 100l spraying 1m wide to 300l spraying 4m wide.
• A large roller to smooth surfaces and address damage caused by vehicles.
• Drag mats to level uneven surfaces.
• Various mowers and machinery for grass maintenance. Two new mowers were purchased in 2024.
General maintenance is handled in-house wherever possible, with outsourcing kept to a minimum to save costs.
Safeguarding Animals
Chris emphasised that all chemical applications are carefully managed to ensure the safety of animals. “If we need to use chemicals that could affect animals, we schedule applications well in advance to allow plenty of time for the area to settle,” he says. “For example, with sheep, if herbicides are applied within the herding paddock, there’s a withholding period of 3-4 weeks to ensure their safety, as they graze on the grass.”
Biodiversity and Wildlife
The team also oversees areas like the dam, working with biodiversity experts to maintain it. A bioactive approach is used to manage weeds, while mites effectively control invasive plants within the dam. “The mites have been so successful that they’ve been collected for use elsewhere,” Chris proudly notes.
A Passion for the Outdoors
Before joining DOGS NSW, Chris worked as a facilities manager and also ran his own grounds maintenance business. However, he prefers the challenges of outdoor work.
“I enjoy working with different people and seeing the results of our efforts,” he says. “There’s nothing more satisfying than a well-prepared ground for an event.”
With dedicated staff, innovative approaches to grounds management and a commitment to sustainability, Chris and his team continue to ensure DOGS NSW remains a premier destination for canine events and activities.
