Dear Members,
Chairman's REPORT
Welcome to a warm 2025!
Looking ahead, we are excited to see growing interest in our membership, particularly in Dog Sports. The SprintDog TM Sport event, detailed further in this Gazette by Kate Davidson, is just one example of this trend.
We are also looking forward to the upcoming Dog Sports event in March 2025, ‘Canine Sports Spectacular,’ which will be a spectacular showcase of all DOGS NSW recognised Dog Sports. This event will highlight activities that DOGS NSW recognises as increasingly popular among dog owners and their beloved canines, and attendees can try-out on the day with their dogs.
In line with this, modifications are underway to the race-track area, thanks to the efforts of the Grounds Team. These improvements will better accommodate various activities, including SprintDog TM racing. The upgrades include extending the fencing and track, potentially installing lighting for evening events, and making enhancements to the adjacent building.
The RNSWCC Health and Welfare Charity continues its incredible work, which deserves recognition. It provides invaluable support to organisations such as Hawkesbury Helping Hands, assisting homeless individuals and their pets, as well as contributing to research. Additionally, the Charity has responded to the growing need for assistance with rescue groups, helping to re-home dogs in need. A more detailed report on the work of the RNSWCC Health and Welfare Charity can be found further in this Gazette.
Congratulations to all those Conformation Judges candidates who passed their final practical in 2024.
Kind Regards lyn
Lyn Brand

Editor's MESSAGE
Dear Members,
Welcome to 2025! I do hope you all had a lovely Christmas break and the New Year brings you all good health and happiness!
In this month’s edition we look at coverage of the DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee’s first shows, which were held at our Orchard Hills grounds on 27 October 2024. This Committee has been extremely pro-active with raising funds for the grounds and we wish them well in their endeavours. Coverage of the shows commences on page 8.
Since the establishment of The Royal NSW Canine Council (RNSWCC) Health and Welfare Charity in 2017, the Charity has continued to make significant progress to improve canine welfare, support rescue groups and fund critical health research. After an interview with Charity Chair, Hugh Gent OAM, Kate Davidson reports on the Charity’s recent achievements, ongoing efforts, future goals and the ways in which you, as members, can assist. The article commences on page 12.
The DOGS NSW Northern Region (Inland) also had their show on 25 October 2025, and this was in conjunction with the Coonabarrabran and Walcha Kennel Club Shows, held over the same weekend. Coverage of the Northern Region’s Show appears on page 13.
We also have a round-up of Dances With Dogs events, along with coverage of their final competition held on 9 November, 2024. This commences on page 19.
As SprintDog™ is about to bound into 2025 with their events, we thought we would feature more information about this new sport, including how to get started, what it is about, who can partcipate, plus the answers to many more questions. Kate Davidson reports on page 21.
Finally, we have two interesting and informative articles; the first on the Politics of Canine Genetic Testing, with the basics every Australia Breeder should know, written by George Sofronidis from Orivet; and secondly, the ‘Secret to Bonding with your Dog,’ an article based on a study by researchers from the University of Geneva.
The winners of the November ‘Pupoon’ Competition were: Melitta Armstrong, Mary-Lou Keating, Leilani Lynch, Michelle Oldfield, Christopher Coomas and Dianna Brennan.
For those members who have reached their 50 and 25 year membership status, we would like to acknowledge these members and thank them for their continuing support of our organisation with a 25 year or 50 year badge and certificate. Please see the recent recipients below.

DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee SHOWS
Championship AM/PM Shows ~ 27 October 2024
The DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee was formed in June of this year as a fundraising Committee, running events and activities with the proceeds being used solely towards improving member facilities. Along with our Committee, we have a small group of dedicated member volunteers who regularly assist at fundraising BBQs and public events. When we had the opportunity to run a double show, we took on the challenge with much enthusiasm.
We can’t thank those enough who appreciated our cause and donated their time and services to this event. Thank you to Marilyn Parker for taking on the position of Show Secretary and running the office with Chris Mann and Paul Britza; we could not have done it without you. To our small committee who catered for the official’s morning tea and lunch, well done. I think it went down very well. A special mention also to our photographer Barbara Killworth who managed to cover the ribbon photos single handedly.
Thank you also to the DOGS NSW Grounds staff for setting up the podium and General Specials ring; it was much appreciated and certainly added to the atmosphere of the shows.
Photography: Cabal Canine Candids
We were fortunate to have secured very generous sponsors namely Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Knose Pet Insurance, Sires on Ice, That Pet Place @ Dural, Di-Vetelact, Delete, Orivet, Dogzonline, Debbie’s Doggie Creations and Marellen Show Ribbons. Lovely to have a young handler comment on the quality of our handler prizes too.
We were pleased to be able to add support to the Share the Dignity Charity which is a passion of our member and friend Tanya Scales. Every little bit helps, and your donations will put a smile on someone’s face.
We congratulate all the winners and say thank you to everyone who took the time to say how much they enjoyed the day; it certainly makes it all worthwhile.
We have now raised over $15,000 with a target of $20,000 before the end of the year.
If you think you might like to become involved in our activities, we are always looking for new volunteers. Please contact Sue McFadden at glenbriar1@gmail.com or Angus McIlraith at: angus.mcilrath@gmail.com for more information.

RNSWCC Health and Welfare Charity
Advancing Canine Health and Welfare Across Australia
- WORDS: Kate Davidson
The Royal NSW Canine Council (RNSWCC) Health and Welfare Charity continues to champion the well-being of dogs and their owners throughout Australia. Since its establishment in 2017, the Charity has made significant progress in its mission to improve canine welfare, support rescue groups, and fund critical health research. Here’s an update on their recent achievements, ongoing efforts, and future goals.
Addressing Emerging Challenges in Canine Welfare
In response to growing concerns such as homelessness and shelter overcrowding, the Charity has implemented targeted initiatives to tackle these pressing issues.
• Homelessness Support Program: Collaborating with Hawkesbury Helping Hands, the Charity has extended assistance to homeless individuals and their pets in Windsor and Richmond. Services include pop-up veterinary clinics, essential supplies like dog food and desexing services to curb unwanted litters.
• Rescue Group Grants: To alleviate the strain on overcrowded shelters, the Charity provided $5,000 grants to rescue groups, enabling them to care for the increasing number of surrendered dogs.
Expanding Partnerships for Better Canine Health
One standout initiative is the Charity’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Animal Management in Rural and Remote Indigenous Communities (AMRRIC). This partnership addresses the growing threat of ehrlichiosis, a tick-borne disease affecting dogs, particularly in Indigenous communities. Through funding, prophylactic treatments, and educational outreach, the Charity is working to halt the disease’s spread to domestic dog populations.
Recent Success Stories
The RNSWCC Health and Welfare Charity has consistently stepped up in times of crisis and need:
• Disaster Relief: From aiding during the devastating 2020-21 bushfires to supporting flood-affected areas in Windsor, Richmond, and the Central West, the Charity has been a lifeline for both dogs and their owners.
• Advancing Canine Health Research: The Charity is funding a groundbreaking University of Sydney study investigating cannabinoid receptors as a potential treatment for chronic pain in dogs with osteoarthritis.
• Veterinary Support for Homeless Communities: Recent programs have provided essential veterinary care for the pets of homeless individuals, ensuring these animals remain healthy and cared for.
Goals for the Future
Looking ahead, the Charity is doubling down on its mission to alleviate suffering and improve the lives of dogs across NSW. Key priorities include:
1. Direct Care for Vulnerable Dogs: Providing immediate support for lost, mistreated, or ownerless dogs.
2. Rehabilitation Initiatives: Offering care and rehabilitation for orphaned, sick, or injured dogs.
3. Funding Research: Supporting studies that advance understanding and treatment of canine diseases.
4. Veterinary Training Support: Creating scholarships and fellowships to promote veterinary science.
5. Service Animal Training: Preparing dogs to assist disadvantaged individuals in need of service animals.
How You Can Help
The RNSWCC Health and Welfare Charity relies on public support to continue its vital work. There are many ways to get involved:
• Donate: Financial contributions go directly toward funding the Charity’s rescue, research, and outreach efforts.
• Volunteer: Assist with events, programs, or rescue initiatives.
• Advocate for Responsible Ownership: Help spread awareness about the importance of responsible dog care in your community.
For more information on how you can support the Charity’s efforts, visit the DOGS NSW website. Together, we can create a brighter future for dogs and their families across Australia.

The last show for DOGS NSW Northern Region (Inland) was held on the weekend of 25 - 27 October 2024, in conjunction with the Coonabarrabran and Walcha Kennel Club Shows. Beautiful weather made for a great weekend of showing and the rings looked fantastic.

Thank you also to our sponsors Royal Canin.

Manchester Terrier
History
Manchester Terriers are said to be the descendants of the old English Black-and- Tan Terrier. Unlike most Terrier breeds, the Manchester is a city dog. Shipping docks around Liverpool and Manchester were alive with rats due to poor sanitation in the 1800s, so there was plenty of work for this quick-witted and nimble Terrier.
When the Kennel Club opened its stud books in 1873, the Manchester Terrier was still known as the English Black-and-Tan Terrier. At the time, the distinguished dog judge and writer Hugh Dalziel described the Manchester as the most elegant and graceful of all Terriers.
Appearance & Characteristics
People who owned a Manchester Terrier may be asked if it’s a Miniature Dobermann. It’s an easy mistake to make at first glance, as this unusual little Terrier does somewhat resemble the Dobermann breed, but that’s where the similarities end.
Manchester Terriers are eye-catching little dogs. The head is long and wedge- shaped with bright, almond-shaped eyes and small v-shaped ears set high. The short body has a straight to slightly roach back and a whiptail. Legs are in proportion to the dog, neither too short nor too long. Colour is jet black with rich mahogany-tan markings. The coat is smooth and glossy with a firm texture.
Temperament
High-spirited, agile and intelligent, the Manchester Terrier is an affectionate dog that makes a wonderful companion. It is devoted and faithful; extremely lively, alert, keen and vigilant. It is strongly people oriented and makes a wonderful family companion.
The Manchester Terrier is eager to please and excels in both Agility and Obedience. Being of athletic build, the breed is very active and benefits from daily exercise.
However, given the choice, the Manchester Terrier prefers the company of people to a long walk. At first, the breed can be a little reserved; it is not everyone’s immediate friend. Therefore, early and positive socialisation is essential for a young Manchester Terrier.
Suitability
The breed’s smooth coat and devotion to family make it an ideal house and watchdog. Being a sociable animal, the Manchester Terrier is not suited to a solitary life in the backyard. Its short coat does shed, but is easily maintained with a quick brush and occasional wash as required. During winter, the breed would benefit from a dog coat at night or on very cold days.
The Manchester Terrier is a suitable pet for a wide range of situations, from families with children to active older people.
Suitability
The Manchester Terrier is low maintenance, sound in health and loyal at heart. It has an affectionate nature and would be an excellent choice for an urban or country household.
They are not entirely reliable around small, non-canine animals, as its hunting instincts are strong. The breed should be socialised as a puppy and introduced to children as early as possible. If its needs as a canine are met, the Manchester Terrier will make a wonderful family companion.
Health
It’s reasonable to claim that anyone purchasing a Manchester Terrier will most likely enjoy an average of 14 trouble-free years with their pet. This is not to say that health problems are completely unknown in this breed.
Von Willebrand’s disease (vWD), a bleeding disorder common in a number of breeds, has been known to affect the Manchester Terrier, although it is rare in Australia. The disease is an inherited deficiency of one of the 13 clotting factors of the blood, similar to haemophilia. A genetic marker has been identified for vWD in Manchester Terriers, allowing breeders to ensure no affected dogs are produced.
A common and serious genetic problem in purebred dogs, hypothyroidism has been seen in both Toy and Standard Manchester Terriers (as well as most other breeds of dogs) outside of Australia. The disease results from the impaired production and secretion of thyroid hormone, which is responsible for a number of important functions including regulating metabolism.
Hypothyroidism causes a wide variety of symptoms, but is often suspected in dogs that have trouble with weight gain or obesity, hair loss, skin problems or temperament changes. Hypothyroidism is easy to diagnose with a blood test and can often be regulated with synthetic thyroid medication. Overall, the Manchester Terrier is a sound breed and has an average life span of 14 years.

DANCES WITH DOGS
Dances With Dogs 2024
DOGS NSW Obedience, Tracking and Performance Disciplines Committee have conducted four double Dances With Dogs competitions during 2024. The organisation of the competitions has been the responsibility of the Dances With Dogs Working Party assisted by a group of enthusiastic helpers.
While Dances With Dogs developed from Obedience heelwork, it has grown into a discipline with many creative moves, skilfully choreographed and performed to music, where dog and handler aim to display a high level of teamwork. The costumes and props used in the routines are very innovative and add another dimension to the interpretation of the selected music.
There are two divisions within Dances With Dogs - Freestyle and Heelwork to Music. Both divisions have four classes: Starter, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced.
As the name indicates, Freestyle provides the opportunity for the handler to select moves to be used within the routine as long as they are safe and within the capacity and age of the dog.
While Freestyle moves are permitted in Heelwork To Music routines, this division is more formal and precise with the dog being required to maintain heelwork positions for at least 70% of the performance.
During the year the Dances With Dogs Working Party has conducted several workshops and are already planning more for the new year.
It was encouraging to welcome some new people to the final competition for the 2024, held on Saturday, 9 November. The judging panel, Ms C Neal (ACT), Mrs A Yerbury (NSW) and Mrs J Turley (NSW), were kept busy scoring the routines presented during the day.
Our thanks to Eukanuba for sponsoring the competitions throughout the year.

SprintDog™ is an exciting new sport designed for dogs and their owners, focusing on enjoyment, community and safety. SprintDog™ emphasises fun and inclusivity, making it a fantastic activity for dogs of all breeds, sizes and skill levels.
What Is SprintDog™?
SprintDog™ is all about dogs having the freedom to run and play in a safe, controlled environment. The activity takes place on a flat surface, ensuring safety and preventing injuries. Dogs are encouraged to chase a moving lure, but they can also do a recall. Whatever it takes to get them to cross the finish line and earn a well-deserved reward. Whether it’s a Pomeranian, Pug, Terrier, or a larger sighthound like a Borzoi or Greyhound, SprintDog™ welcomes all.
Why Join SprintDog™?
The biggest draw of SprintDog™ is the sheer fun it brings to dogs and their owners. It’s not about competing for the fastest time but about celebrating each dog doing its best. The atmosphere is community-focused and supportive, where participants cheer each other on. Even novice participants can jump right in without formal training. There are no dog-to-dog interactions in SprintDog™ and a SprintDog™ event is designed with safety at top of mind
How Does a SprintDog™ Run Work?
Each SprintDog™ run involves two handlers: one at the start line and one at the finish. The starting handler holds the dog, waiting for the Sprint Marshall’s call of “Tally Ho!”—which signals the beginning of the run. As the lure begins to move, the dog is released to sprint after it or run directly toward the catcher at the finish line.
The way a dog finishes the race isn’t what matters; crossing the line does. Timing is recorded to track performance, but the emphasis remains on fun and participation.
Getting Started with SprintDog™
To participate, your dog must be registered with an organisation such as DOGS NSW or Dogs Australia. Newcomers can attend events and try out SprintDog™ without prior training. Handlers should be prepared with a flat collar and two slip leads—one for the releaser to lead the dog to the starting line and another for the catcher at the finish. A flirt pole can be a useful training tool for dogs that need motivation or practice.
What to Expect at an Event
SprintDog™ events are well-organised with safety protocols and proper separation between dogs. This ensures a relaxed atmosphere where participants can focus on having fun. Events are held across various locations, not limited to Sydney. The sport welcomes everyone, including volunteers who want to learn and support the community.
A Place for Every Dog
SprintDog™ prides itself on being inclusive. It’s embedded in the sport’s ethos that all dogs, regardless of background or limitations, are welcome. As long as a dog is able to complete 100m in under 60 seconds, they are welcome in SprintDog™, showcasing the spirit of inclusion and support that defines SprintDog™. Crossing the finish line within 60 seconds can earn a dog a qualification, and each achievement is celebrated with the team and spectators.
How to Join the Community
Those interested in trying SprintDog™or volunteering can attend events, mock trials, and training sessions. Beginners receive guidance, ensuring their dogs can safely participate. Clubs affiliated with DOGS NSW are encouraged to host events, and plans for a Sprint track with lighting are underway, to allow for year-round participation, including during hot, summer evenings.
SprintDog™ is more than just a sport, it’s a bridge between different canine activities, from show dogs to family pets, offering a chance to bond, play, and grow within a supportive community. Join the fun, get involved, and share unforgettable moments with your dog at SprintDog.™

The Politics of Canine Genetic Testing: What Every Australian Breeder Should Know
By George Sofronidis, with Contributions from Charlie & Mary
As the demand for genetically sound dogs grows, Australian breeders are embracing their role as stewards of heritage lines and champions of responsible breeding. Navigating the world of genetic tests, laboratories, and breeder tools can feel overwhelming, much like how my Boston Terrier, ‘Charlie’, and Griffon Bruxellois, ‘Mary’, enthusiastically tackle any adventure (or puddle). But unlike my mischievous duo, breeders must approach genetic testing with caution and strategy. This article delves into the essentials of genetic testing, highlighting what to consider and how to ensure the future of your breeding program aligns with the legacy of responsible breeding.
What Should You Look for in Genetic Testing Services?
Not all genetic tests are created equal, and understanding what you’re investing in is crucial for informed breeding decisions. Here are key factors to consider:
Comprehensive Testing Panels
The best labs offer panels tailored to your breed, covering inherited diseases, traits, and coat colors. Such panels help breeders avoid undesirable conditions while preserving desired traits. Ask yourself:
• Does the lab’s test menu align with my breeding goals?
• Are these tests recognised by Dogs Australia or my breed Club?
Accuracy and Reliability
Choose a lab with a proven track record of validated results and industry accreditation. Reliable results form the backbone of responsible breeding.
Turnaround Time – Everyone needs results yesterday!
While fast results are convenient, they should never compromise accuracy. Reliable timing is especially critical when breeders are working within tight breeding schedules.
When I tested Charlie and Mary, I ensured the panels addressed their breed-specific health needs. Charlie was screened for hereditary cataracts - prevalent in Boston Terriers - while Mary was tested for syringomyelia, a condition occasionally affecting Griffon Bruxellois. The results guided me in making informed, responsible decisions.
What Sets a Laboratory Apart?
Exceptional labs offer more than just results; they become partners in the breeding journey. Here’s what to look for:
Comprehensive Test Menu
Labs that regularly update their panels demonstrate a commitment to science. A broad test menu, including coat colours and health conditions, empowers breeders to make holistic decisions.
The Politics of Canine Genetic Testing: What Every Australian Breeder Should Know
What Sets a Laboratory Apart?
Breeder-Centric Support
A standout lab doesn’t stop at providing results. Look for tools like genetic calculators, breeding strategies, and expert consultations. Customer service tailored to breeders ensures you have support when you need it most.
Advanced Technology
Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) offers comprehensive insights but comes at a higher cost. Traditional methods like PCR remain reliable and accessible for targeted tests.
With Charlie and Mary, I chose a lab that didn’t just deliver results but also offered insights into breeding compatibility and long-term planning. Tools like these gave me confidence in preserving health and heritage while embracing innovation.
Breeder Tools: The Key to Purposeful Planning
Breeder tools bridge the gap between testing results and actionable strategies. Here’s how they help:
Genetic Calculators
These tools predict outcomes for potential pairings, balancing health risks and desired traits. For breeds like Boston Terriers or Griffon Bruxelloiss, predicting coat colors or hereditary conditions can be invaluable.
Breed-Specific Guidelines
Labs with expertise in breed standards provide guidance that aligns with Dogs Australia requirements. This ensures breeders maintain the traits and temperament that define their breed while prioritising health.
Consultation and Support
Access to geneticists or experienced staff helps breeders interpret complex results, such as carrier status or at-risk markers. With expert input, you can make informed decisions without second-guessing.
For Charlie, I used a genetic calculator to explore coat color possibilities. For Mary, consultations helped me plan matings that minimised hereditary risks while enhancing Griffon-specific traits.
Understanding Testing Platforms
Different genetic testing platforms serve different purposes. Here’s a quick breakdown:
• PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction): Ideal for detecting specific mutations.
• Microarray Testing: Efficient for testing multiple markers, suitable for breed panels.
• Next Generation Sequencing (NGS): Comprehensive but more costly, capable of identifying new mutations. Your choice should depend on your goals. For a single condition, PCR might suffice, but for more complex insights, NGS offers a deeper dive into genetic health.
Data Security: Protecting Your DNA Assets
In the digital age, DNA data is invaluable, making its security non-negotiable. Breeders should prioritise labs that ensure: Secure Storage and Confidentiality
Ensure your dog’s DNA data is protected from misuse and remains confidential.
Ownership and Control
Retain ownership of your data. Opt for labs that allow you to decide how, and if, your dog’s data is shared.
For Charlie and Mary, I chose a lab that prioritised privacy, ensuring their data remained under my control. Trustworthy labs respect breeders’ rights and protect against unauthorised use. The ability to share and transfer data is a key tool most breeders need today – you have the ‘power’ to click to what you share and to who.
The Politics of Genetic Testing: Striking the Right Balance
Genetic testing can be a contentious topic, with debates ranging from the extent of testing to its interpretation.
Balancing Science with Responsibility
Responsible breeders aim to manage health risks without jeopardising genetic diversity. Testing is a tool, not an absolute.
Thoughtful Interpretation of Results
A genetic marker’s presence doesn’t automatically disqualify a dog from breeding. Context matters, and expert input can guide breeders in making balanced decisions.
Charlie and Mary’s results weren’t just data points—they were puzzle pieces that informed my broader breeding strategy. Responsible testing isn’t about perfection but about progress and preservation.
Voting for the Future: Your Role in Breeding Politics
Breeders play a critical role in shaping the future of their breeds, not just through their programs but by influencing the policies of Dogs Australia and breed clubs.
• Get Involved: Participate in club elections or committees. Your voice can influence testing standards and breeding guidelines.
• Stay Educated: Keep up with advancements in genetics and advocate for informed, science-based policies. Charlie has already “cast his vote” (a bark of approval), while Mary insists she’d make an excellent president of the backyard. The politics of breeding, like the dynamics of my furry duo, requires collaboration, thoughtfulness, and a bit of good-natured debate.
Conclusion: Testing with Purpose, Breeding with Confidence
Genetic testing is more than a tool—it’s a responsibility. By choosing reputable labs, leveraging breeder tools, and advocating for thoughtful policies, you can ensure the legacy of your breed remains strong.
Breeders of traditional lines hold the torch for heritage and health. By embracing the science of genetics without losing sight of the art of breeding, you contribute to a future where every puppy represents the best of its breed.
So, dive in confidently—just like Charlie and Mary—but remember, every test and decision you make carries the potential to shape generations. Let’s make them count.

Scientists reveal the key to bonding with your dog - and it’s all about the way you SPEAK to them
By Xantha Leatham, Deputy Science Editor, The Daily Mail
Instead of addressing your pup in a high-pitched tone, speak extra slowly.
Most dog owners will reserve a special voice for their pampered pooch. But instead of addressing your pup in a highpitched tone, it’s worth speaking extra slowly if you really want to bond with them, according to a study.
That’s because dogs’ comprehension of human speech relies on a much slower tempo, experts say, and slowing down our speech may help us better connect with them.
To better understand how people and dogs communicate, researchers from the University of Geneva analysed the vocal sounds of 30 dogs. They then studied the sounds of 27 humans across five languages speaking to other people, and 22 humans across those languages speaking to dogs. The scientists also used electroencephalography (EEG) to examine the brain responses to speech in both humans and dogs.
Humans are much faster ‘talkers’ than dogs, the study showed, with a speech rate of about four syllables per second. Meanwhile dogs bark, growl, woof, and whine at a rate of about two vocalizations per second. When talking to dogs, the humans slowed their speech to around three syllables per second, showing that there was some innate awareness of needing to speak more slowly.
EEG signals of humans and canines showed that dogs’ neural responses to speech are focused on slower ‘delta’ rhythms, while human responses to speech are focused on faster ‘theta’ rhythms.
The authors suggest that humans and dogs have different vocal processing systems, and that slowing down our speech when speaking to pets may have ultimately helped us better connect with them.
Writing in the journal Plos Biology they said: ‘While dogs cannot produce articulated sounds, they respond to speech. Using acoustic analyses of dog vocalisations, we show that their main production rhythm is slower [than that of humans], and that human-dog-directed speech falls halfway in-between.’
‘Exploration of neural and behavioural responses to speech reveals that comprehension in dogs relies on a slower speech rhythm than humans.’
Previous research has shown that dogs show greater brain sensitivity to the speech directed at them than to speech directed at adults, especially if spoken by women. Hungarian researchers measured dog brain activity using MRI scans and found similarities between the ways infants and dogs processed speech with exaggerated intonations, commonly known as ‘baby talk’.
Book Review: MY NAME IS GUCCI - A DOG’S STORY
After living in a Singapore dog shelter for five years, Gucci – a vaguely Dalmatian-like crossbred is losing hope of ever being rescued. One day to his surprise he is adopted by her, a writer, and moves to inner city Sydney. On arrival, however, an anti-dog war breaks out in their apartment block; Gucci’s owner receives a letter threatening the possibility of ‘euthanasia’. The incident triggers nightmares in her and brings back distressing childhood memories.
‘My Name Is Gucci’ is a charming novel about the relationships between pets and their owners and about how the past shapes the present. This bold ex-shelter dog narrated fable beautifully unravels Gucci’s and his adopter /guardian’s secrets, which have been intertwined for decades through their recurring reincarnations.
Author, Sun Jung understands the deep connections that exist between animals and humans. You won’t need to be a dog lover to be entranced by this story; it is brimming with warmth, wit and wisdom.
Sun Jung is the author of the novel, Bukit Brown, a book of essays, The Letter, I Sent You, and the academic book, Korean Masculinities and Transcultural Consumption. She has been an academic and writer for media production companies and cultural magazines in Los Angeles, Seoul, Melbourne and Singapore. She lives in Darlinghurst, Sydney with her partner and Gucci.
