President’s Report

As we move towards the centre point of the year, competition in all disciplines is getting into full swing. At the start of May (3rd – 5th) we have the 50th German Shepherd National Championship Show being held at Barrett Reserve West Beach. This is a great spectacle to watch as it is conducted somewhat differently from the standard conformation show with double handling and runners. A must see for all trainees on Group 5 (Working Dogs). At the end of the month there is the Dogs SA Blackhawk Winter International Championship Shows (30 May – 02 Jun) with 4 All Breeds shows including an FCI CACIB and A2O show. There is also 11 specialty shows being conducted at the same time. As we move further into June we have the Dogs SA Agility Advisory Committee’s State Agility Championships (8th – 10th), again a very good event to watch dogs go through their paces.

With Mick Carter leaving Dogs SA in April, the Executive Officer has been quick to advertise the position internally to all Dogs SA members in the first instance to fill the position. There were a number of strong candidates from those who made application however, the preferred candidate was Rachael Fagan who will commence in mid May. Members may be aware of Rachael as she has been a member for over 20 years and has competed in many of the sporting disciplines. I am sure her knowledge of these disciplines and experience in administration will be an asset to the already very effective office.

As can be seen by those who have recently visited David Roche Park the grounds have bounced back well after the issues with the irrigation system and although not fully repaired is well on the way back. Thank you to the exhibitors who supported us whilst we were getting an action plan in place.

There are a number of pet expos coming up over the next few months that Dogs SA will be involved in. Participation in these events is the most cost effective and probably the best way to promote Dogs SA branding and promoting the Dogs Australia Pedigree dogs and sporting activities. We need the support of the disciplines and breed clubs at these events to demonstrate to the public that we are the leaders in the dog scene in SA.

Council is currently reviewing the Dogs SA Constitution which was put forward at the 2024 AGM. Your concerns were noted on the night and hopefully will be changed to suit the wants of the members before going to possibly a Special General Meeting later his year.

Life Membership Dogs SA Margaret Bush OAM

Margaret Bush joined Dogs SA in 1998 when she purchased her first pedigree dog, a Hungarian Vizsla making her a continuous member of Dogs SA (SA Canine Association) for 25 years. She joined the Hungarian Vizsla Club of SA and soon after joined the German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) Club of SA, despite not yet owning a GSP, but it didn’t take long and she fell in love with the breed. Margaret was also co-opted on to the Gundog Club of SA and served on all 3 committees for several years, especially the GSP Club where she spent over 10 years.

She has been an avid fundraiser for any club she has been involved in whether it be selling bingo tickets, chocolates, raffles, organising catering for events, wine raffles etc.

She was a member of the Dalmatian Club of SA for a few years and with her expertise from assisting with the running of 2 successful GSP nationals in SA helped do the same for the Dalmatian Club. In more recent years, she became a committee member of the Pug Club of SA.

She would randomly assist of an early morning to make the sandwiches in the canteen as it was something she enjoyed doing. When the manager retired and the canteen became a paid position, she continued to volunteer her time along with working on club fundraising days for all of the above clubs in the canteen. At a time of need when the paid position was vacated, she stepped up and volunteered her service to keep the canteen running and get it back to where it needed to be. Over 10 years later she is still there. For a 2 day show she spends many hours before ordering and sourcing specials to avoid purchasing at a premium and she collects all stock herself at her own cost to avoid the association delivery fees and ensuring the profit margins are as high as possible. She also provides a service to clubs to serve the judges lunches, which has a great profit margin for the association.

At 88 years of age she is still a regular volunteer to Dogs SA in order to organise/run the canteen for dog shows. She steps up and organises catering for Dogs SA AGM’s and Judges training evenings when asked and caters for breed specialty and national shows opening the canteen when requested.

In 2019 she was awarded the Premiers Certificate for Recognition for Outstanding Volunteer Service and in 2020 Margaret was awarded the Dog SA Distinguished Service Award.

And in 2021 Margaret was announced in the Queen's Birthday 2021 Honours List the Order of Australia Medal for her voluntary service to many organisations over the years but especially Dogs SA.

Margaret Bush is more than worthy of life membership with Dogs SA.

One of the oldest French hunting dogs, Chien de Franche-Comté, known today as a Porcelaine Hound, in the past was also known as ‘Chien de Lunévilles’. Because of the lack of written sources and the fact that the breed was the subject of many conflicting stories about its origin and the meaning of its name, it is more appropriate to talk about legends surrounding the origins of Porcelaines, than strictly about its history. There are a few milestones and a few names from the past, mostly from nineteenth century, which should be specifically mentioned as those which had their meaningful impact and contribution into the breed.

According to one legend, Porcelaines are descended from the white dog of SaintHubert, which was gifted to Dr Coillot from Montbazon by the Abbot of Luxeuil, Mr de Clermont-Tonnerre. At the same time as Dr Coillot was developing his pack, a few other groups of Porcelaines in France had an important impact on the population - a pack in Besancon that belonged to Mr Nicot and another in Rang that belonged to Mr Martial.

The French Revolution in 1789 had a hugely negative impact on the population of Porcelaines decimating the breed which was associated mostly with hunting by the French aristocracy. At that time, many Porcelaines were exiled to Switzerland to preserve the breed. Marquis de Foudras, who, amongst others, was a successful writer of hunting novels, organised the arrival of a Swiss group into France with a pack of sixty dogs called at that time ‘Briquet Franc Cantois’, ’Swiss dogs' which were famous for their hare-hunting skills. In one of his novels, Marquis de Foudras described the impression the pack made on French huntsmen saying that this newly known breed surprised everybody with their lively and elegant appearance, but most of all with their hunting skills as firstly their hunting ability was questioned, as it was hard to imagine their velvet ears facing the brambles of the thickets, their transparent legs doing well in the mud and not being hurt on the sharp stones. For some time, there were disputes if the breed was of French or Swiss origin; obviously, the many different names given to the breed were not helpful in recognising the origin of Porcelaine Hounds, though the Comte de Marolles, a great historian of the “veneries”, stated finally that the Porcelaine Hounds are of French origin, and since then France has been regarded as the country of origin of the breed, and is resognised as the country of origin of the breed in the standard by Federation Cynologique International (FCI).

Certainly, Marquis de Foudras was the person who named the breed ‘Porcelain’ in the middle of the nineteeneth century; the name of the breed was derived because of their shiny white coats, through which their skin, marbled with numerous black spots, is faintly visible - this effect is the same as with an object placed in between fine translucent porcelain and the source of light - the interplay of light and the opacity of the material gives a unique and captivating visual effect. Also, Porcelaine’s hair exposed to the sun light shines like real porcelain, but do not be misled as Porcelaine hounds, despite their appearance, have nothing in common with the fragility of porcelain.

In 1884, at the Tuileries in France, the first group of dogs defined as Porcelaines was shown, causing a sensation as it was the first time the breed was introduced to a wider circle of huntsman. The creators of the breed were working hard to give the Porcelaines improved conformation and to give them more pace...both were achieved by adding the mixture of blood from Billy, Gascon-Saintongeois and Sommerset Harrier. Unfortunately, the side effect of these additions was the bigger size of the dogs, which is one of the problems the breed is still facing today. Further physiological modifications took place at the beginning of the twentieth century by adding the blood of Artois and Norman dogs, the main aim of these modifications was to correct the heavy morphologies by reducing dewlap and achieving a lighter frame.

The first Porcelaine standard under FCI was published in 1964. Porcelaines are qualified there as utility scenthounds, classified in FCI Group VI in section - medium sized hounds, with the first Porcelaine Club being established in France in 1971. In the last 15 years, Porcelaine Hounds started to appear in show rings all over the world – firstly in Europe and the USA, and very recently, the first ever Porcelaine Hound arrived in Australia. Previously, the breed was present only in France and Italy,

where they were used only as working dogs hunting small game - mostly hare, but also deer and roe.

The Porcelaine Hounds are very French-looking and show top quality in every detail of their structure. The Porcecelaine’s head is very distinctive expressing the a gentle and intelligent look; it should typically be lean and finely sculptured, rather longneither square nor pointed - with a rounded pear-shaped skull so very characteristic of the breed. The skull should be wide at the top between where the ears are set, flat with a median axis, and the occiput must not be pronounced. The chamfer should be of a good length, giving the ear a relatively long appearance - their ears should be very fine, giving the effect of translucency, settled slightly below the line of their eyes (never above the eye line); long - reaching the end of the muzzle when the dog’s head is turned down, set on narrow, rotated inward and pointed at the ends. Orange dappling on the white ears is highly characteristic for the breed.

The nasal bridge should be straight but ending with a slight arch. Their nose is well developed with very black, well opened nostrils, the eyes are round and very dark with this specific for Porcelaine expression of intelligence and sweetness. The stop should be marked, but not exaggerated. Their neck should be fairly long, light, showing a little dewlap of tense and lean appearance. The head and neck are very French in type, which means they should express lightness, especially soft tissues, which should be marked but taut.

Porcelaines have a single, smooth and shiny coat; their hair is thin, close lying and very white with round-ish orange spots, which can never be extended to a mantle. Usually, the orange spots superimpose other black pigmented spots on the skin.

A Porcelaine's chest should be of an average width, but deep; their ribs being rather long but not flat. A Porcelaine's back should be broad and straight, withers well prominent, loins wide and very muscular, well coupled and not excessive in length. The croup should be slightly slanting, haunches placed well apart and slightly prominent. The underline should be full but slightly tucked up. The tail - well attached, fairly strong at the root, thinning at the tip and of an average length, should be without any longer, coarser or slightly off-standing hairs. Porcelaine Hounds carry their tail slightly curved. Very characteristic for a Porcelaine is their shoulders, which need to be constructed for a gallop, their natural movement - long, well sloping, well-muscled, but without being heavy. Forefeet are very typical for a French hound with rather elongated and fine but tight toes and hard pads. The head and body combined as a whole must give an impression of speed.

Porcelaine Hounds are medium sized dogs, according to the breed standard - adult bitches should not exceed 56 cm, adult males – 58 cm . Their weight varies between 25-28 kg. Their gait is lively and gay, their gallop - light and tireless. Seeing them running in the fields is a real pleasure and it is a joy to see such grace and elegance

Porcelaine Hounds are not only beautiful, but also of very good character - they are well-balanced, intelligent, brave, curious and are very good companions in a family environment; they love the attention of people. Any specimens showing signs of aggression or being overly shy should not be used for breeding. Other disqualifying faults are any physical or behavioural abnormalities, lack of type, lack of pigment, faults in colour such as being too bright, tending to mahogany, greyish or mingled with black hair coat.

For years, Porcelains were just working dogs used for hunting. In recent years, however, they have also become family and show dogs and we must remember the origin of the breed, as only by knowing and respecting what the breed was created for will we have a full understanding of how best to live with them while maintaining the correct standards for the breed.

ATTACHMENT A RULE EXCERPTS

1. NEW CLASS/TITLE – SCENT WORK ULTIMATE (SWU)

4.2 Classes

(e) Ultimate: provides an integrated search environment combining at least three (3) of the four (4) Elements from the Odour Search Division, which are worked as one search. The number of hides and distractions is unknown to the handler. The dog and handler must work autonomously to resolve the challenges set by the Judge in the search area. The team will need to demonstrate sustained resilience and persistence and work in a timely, efficient and effective manner to complete the search. They must be confident that they have identified all the hides present and cleared all search areas before calling “Finish”.

5.3 Application for titles

5.3.3 On gaining the title Scent Work Ultimate (SWU) the highest of any previous Class titles for example, SWA, SWE, SWM is retained along with the new title SWU as this title is independently rather than sequentially achieved.

5.3.4 For the title of Scent Work Champion (SW Ch.), the title will appear at the beginning of the dog’s name and all other Scent Work titles will be removed from after the dog’s name.

5.4.1 Scent Work Class Titles

(e) ‘SWU’ signifying Scent Work Ultimate when the dog has achieved its Master title or two (2) Element titles and gained five (5) Qualifying Certificates in the Ultimate Class under at least three (3) different Judges.

6.1 Titling Classes

6.1.1(e) Ultimate: For dogs that have qualified for the Scent Work Master Class title or two (2) Element titles (that is, two of either SWC and/or SWI and/or SWX and/or SWV).

Dogs gaining their SWU title may continue to compete in the Ultimate Class.

6.2 Progression through Titling Classes

6.2.3 A dog that is eligible to compete in the Excellent, Master or Ultimate Class may continue to do so in these Classes, regardless of whether they have gained titles in those Classes or not.

2. NEW TITLE – SCENT WORK CHAMPION

5.4.3 Scent Work Champion

Only the elite dogs will qualify for the title of Scent Work Champion (SW Ch.). To be eligible for this title, a dog must obtain the following six (6) titles:

Class: Scent Work Master (SWM)

Scent Work Ultimate (SWU)

Element: Scent Work Containers (SWC)

Scent Work Interior (SWI)

Scent Work Exterior (SWX)

Scent Work Vehicles (SWV)

3. PROGRESSION THROUGH TITLING CLASSES

6.2 Progression through Titling Classes

Page 12

6.2.5 Dogs can pursue both their Scent Work Class and Scent Work Element titles at the same time. That is, Qualifying Certificates gained towards Scent Work Class titles can be counted towards the dog qualifying for Scent Work Element titles and vice versa.

4. JUDGING TIMES

21.1 Time Allocation

Maximum number of searches* to be judged should be guided by the number of searches in a Class(s) on the day. Judges may specify on their contracts how many entries they are willing to judge at the trial.

Search times should be calculated based on the following estimated time allocation:

5. OTHER CLAUSES

5.3.5 Passes gained in each Class and Element may be used as Qualifying Certificates for both the Scent Work Class Titles and the Scent Work Element Titles.

5.3.6 All Qualifying Certificates gained in the Master Interior Class towards a Scent Work Master title and/or a Scent Work Element title that were gained prior to 1 July 2024 will remain valid and count towards these titles even if the titles are gained after 1 July 2024.
