Welcome to 2025, I trust you had a merry and enjoyable Christmas and a Happy New Year. Before all of the activities start to recommence in the new year, remember memberships are due on the 31st December in the preceding year. If you have not renewed your membership please do so.
Dogs SA has just completed the Dog of the Year and other awards. I would like to thank the dedicated and hard working committee, other volunteers and the Sponsors for co-ordinating this event as the work is not just what you see on the night but months of work leading up to it. There is contracting and organizing judges, checking through the records to identify the qualifiers, sending invitations and the setting up of the event.
Congratulations to the winners on the night with Brodie Bonham and Ch. Neut. Ch. Wandarrak Grease Lightning winning Neuter of the Year, Jennifer MacKenzie and Darcy Clark with Ch. Montaires Major League winning Puppy of the Year and the winner of Dog of the Year, Kristy Lewis and Kate Sharples with Sup. Ch. Genesia Brightblade. Congratulations are extended to all exhibitors with the comments received from the judges of the high quality of dogs presented.
I attended a meeting with the Dog and Cat Management Board which has commenced a review of the South Australia Standards and Guidelines for the Breeding and Trading in Companion Animals. This review is to ensure the document stays current with the Dog and Cat Management (Reform) Bill which is currently being pursued through State parliament. The review is in it’s infancy and we have been assured that Dogs SA will remain a prime stakeholder in the review as well as putting it to the public via the Your Say website. As it progresses, we will keep the members informed and advise on any action necessary.
With ADSS having a break from holding shows in their name in 2025, there has been a lot of discussion over what will happen with the calendar. Firstly, we have only lost 16 shows over the entire year which in the scheme of things is not many. Other Affiliates are already looking at the holes in the calendar with the likelihood they may wish to either conduct additional events or move their existing shows to a weekend where they are not competing against major events in other States. The Dogs SA office is responsible for approving the calendar and I am confident they will do their best to ensure we can continue with a reasonable calendar of events.
Every member should receive a hard copy of the January journal which contains the resumes for each of the candidates standing for President and Council. Along with this you will find the ballot papers for both the election of President and Council. Please read and follow the directions for each as every vote does count towards the future of our Association and hobby.

Darrell Sharman raised that members would not be able to vote for their Vice-President. Vice-President would be elected by the Dogs SA Council. Although the members still voted all positions onto the board, he felt it was the modern way but not democratic.
Tracie Edwards queried the scenario with Peter Thomspon just being elected as Vice President for 3 years whether Dogs SA Council could overturn this decision. Brian Parker responded that they would have the power to do so but highly unlikely.
Kylie Christison queried if there was a casual vacancy does the board appoint to fill the position. Yes, the board can fill the position which would prevent the election costs.
Sheryle Pike advised the board can choose to not appoint. Council requires minimum seven members.
Kylie Christison queried the number required for quorum at an AGM. All meetings would require thirty members for quorum as listed under 32. General Meetings.
Barb Joseph advised she felt that even a casual vacancy should go to an election for members to vote.
Tracie Edwards asked where election details are published. Brian Parker advised that they are not in the proposed constitution as it would be in the bylaws which would then permit electronic voting.
Ben Luxton stated it is a significant decision and therefore moved for a silent ballot. Five members are required to request a silent ballot.
Brian Parker as President declared he is able to call the silent ballot and did so.

CAROLINE MURPHY – President / Councillor
During my time as President, Dogs SA has managed to be considered a leader in member services along with progressive ideas for expanding our member base and income revenue which is not wholly dependent on member contributions. Our membership has also bucked the trend from 2,834 in 2010 to 2,845 in 2023. Not a significant increase but is better than the majority of other Dogs Australia Member bodies who have experienced a significant decline in memberships. As a sporting judge I also have experience in conformation and have a good working knowledge of our discipline’s challenges and needs. A number of our disciplines are struggling for numbers whilst others in the newer sporting activities are thriving. We need to look at what is the attraction in the newer disciplines and can we work some of their ideas into the other disciplines. This may need some considerable thought and rule changes through Dogs Australia.
Dogs SA is still in a strong financial position and as such, has been able to give back to the members by assisting the clubs conducting events. By good financial management Dogs SA has over the previous 2 years been able to either provide financial assistance to clubs in the form of a grant, the payment of their insurances or as we have done for 2024 and 2025 not increased costs which are being experienced by the clubs (levies etc). These initiatives are enabling clubs in turn to not increase fees to members and keep our hobby affordable to many.
I have seen recently that a couple of members are calling for change but are not prepared to step up themselves. I have stepped up again this term as we are still in consultation with the Government over proposed changes to the Animal Welfare Act. Over the years I have managed to build up a network where we do have a voice, yes not as loud as I would like but, yes we do have a voice. Stability has provided us with the opportunity to build on these relationships with Government departments and with other Dogs Australia member bodies even though many of them seemed to change their governing bodies regularly.
After a couple of turbulent years where Council was not working cohesively, this has now been resolved and although everyone on Council has an independent view we are working cohesively for the betterment of the Association and you as members. Please consider this when voting as a strong unified Council can achieve much more than a disruptive one.
What has changed for me over recent times. I have now retired from permanent employment and can spend more time representing the membership in forums where you would normally be required during working hours. This did previously cause some issues with scheduling my work load as it will for whoever is successful in this election.
Into the future we need to focus on memberships and ways of deriving an income away from just increasing member fees. With the increasing interest in the sporting disciplines the chances of gaining recognition as a sporting body improves which in turn opens us up for government support.
I do urge all Dogs SA members to vote. Just as importantly read the resume of those standing, ask questions and talk with the candidates, what they have achieved and are prepared to do for Dogs SA and you as members. Words are cheap so look at the track record of those standing.

I am seeking the support of the membership to be elected as President of Dogs SA, or if unsuccessful for that position, for you to consider me for Council.
I have been a member of Dogs SA and the Golden Retriever Club of SA since arriving in Australia from the UK. I have owned and loved Golden Retrievers since 1973. I have taken part in obedience, retrieving and conformation both here and in the UK. I am a qualified conformation judge for Group Three and a trainee for Group Seven.
I have served on the committee of the Golden Retriever Club of SA on two occasions, fulfilling the roles of Trophy and Sash Officer, Puppy Enquiry Officer and General Committee Member. I have also been a Dogs SA Councillor from 2020 to 2022 and was, unfortunately, unable to offer myself for reelection at that time, due to work commitments.
I have now retired from my career as a police officer after serving 35yrs as a Detective Sergeant and Prosecutor both here in SA and with the Metropolitan Police in London. This now means I have more time to commit to my passion. Many of you will remember me from our interactions when I was organising and running the highly successful James Newton Handling Workshops. I hope in the future to be involved in many more initiatives to benefit all members.
I will bring a fresh perspective, a positive ‘can do’ attitude, great listening skills, and transparency to the role of President of Dogs SA. I am very much a team player, enthusiastic, and hands on, willing to get involved and excited about the future of Dogs SA.
My career in the police has taken me around the world, taught me how important working as a team is to any successful outcome, I am an excellent communicator, I take a balanced approach, I am open minded and above all value honesty and integrity.
I would like a focus on all dog activities. Dogs SA needs to be put on the map, to be proactive with the media and the public in this state. I would like everyone who owns a dog or who is considering owning a dog to know who we are, what we do and to know how they can get involved and how we can make that happen. We have such an amazing wealth of knowledge, experience and skills amongst our membership, I would like to get to know everyone, to invite open communication, to encourage new ideas, to give new ideas a go, if we don’t try we won’t know.

I am seeking your support for re-election to the Council of Dogs SA. With a deep commitment to our organization and over four decades of active involvement, I believe my experience and dedication will continue to serve our community well.
I first joined Dogs SA (then SACA) in 1980/81, beginning my journey as an instructor at the South Australian Obedience Dog Club, where I taught from 1980 to 1997. In 1984, I qualified as an Obedience Judge, followed by Agility in 1987, allowing me to contribute further through judging and helping to uphold the standards of our sports.
From 2005 until 2021, I represented Dogs SA on the National Agility Committee, working to strengthen and promote agility across Australia. I also had the honour of chairing the National Committee at its Rules Review meetings in 2010, 2015, and 2022, contributing to the policies and rules that shape our community.
With a longstanding commitment to our organization, I am eager to continue bringing experience, knowledge, and a collaborative spirit to the Council. BRIAN FIELDER – Councillor
Fellow Members,
I am seeking your support for my nomination for re-election to Council.
I have found my time on Council to be very rewarding despite being quite challenging at times. I have taken my position on Council and the responsibilities that come with it very seriously and have at all times acted in the best interests of our Association, its affiliates and members.
During my working life I spent the vast majority of my working career with the Australian Taxation Office, along the way earning Degrees in both Economics and Accounting from Flinders University. While for many years I worked in Audit and Investigation roles, in the latter years I moved into leadership and management positions. My experience has equipped me with a wide range of skills which have aided me in carrying out the duties of the positions I have held within the Association.
I have been involved in the dog world since 1977 when I took my first Golden Retriever to my local Obedience dog club, which initially led me into competing in Obedience and Conformation. Over the past 40 plus years I have competed successfully in Obedience, Agility and Conformation, firstly with my Goldens then later with German Shepherd Dogs.
Today I am a Life Member of the Noarlunga City Obedience Dog Club, having served as an Instructor and in various positions on the Committee, including Secretary, and for the past 25 years as President. During the 1980s I also served several years on the Committee of the Golden Retriever Club.
I am licenced to judge Obedience and Agility Trials at all levels. This year I acted as mentor for trainees in both Agility and Obedience. Both trainees have now passed their exams and are now licenced Judges.
I first became involved on the administration side of the Association in 2006 when I joined the Obedience Advisory Committee and was Chair for 15 years until I resigned a couple of years ago due to other commitments. During that time I was also Chair of the Obedience Judges Sub Committee and the SA delegate to the ANKC Obedience Sub Committee. I was the Chair of the Agility Advisory Committee in 2021 and the inaugural Chair of the Scent Work Advisory Committee in 2021 and 2022.
In addition, I have been a member of the DogsSA Investigation Committee since 2015 and Chair for the past few years. During my current term on Council I took a leading role in the development of the Exhibitors Code of Conduct and the Penalty Guidelines for breaches of the SACA Constitution and Rules.
I have also taken a leading role in the promotion of Dogs SA and have co-ordinated our presence at such events as the Animal Expo, The Pet Show and Dogs Day Out, liaising with many breed clubs and competitors in various disciplines in order to promote to the general public the benefits of purchasing dogs from our registered breeders and the various activities they can become involved in through the Association and our affiliates.
I firmly believe that the viability of our affiliate clubs is vital to the future of the Association and the activities that take place in all the various disciplines under its banner and have been consistent in my strong support for them.
If I am successful with my nomination I will continue to do my best to ensure that the best interests of all affiliates and members are at the forefront of Council’s deliberations.

MICHELLE VUARAN – Councillor
My name is Michelle Vuaran and I have been a member of Dogs SA for well over 20 years. Many may know me as a result of my long career competing in dog agility, or via my role as instructor and committee member, in various capacities including Vice President at the Agility Dog Club Of SA (I am now a life member of ADCSA). My dogs and I have also represented the State in many National competitions over the years, most recently in this year’s NSW National Agility Championships.
A little about my background, I was an Experimental Scientist at CSIRO for 21 years and this career taught me to be observant, detailed and progressive. It’s so important to move with the times, to continually develop and improve. I left CSIRO to spend more time with my young family and to pursue my passion, a career with dogs, opening my business K9 Dynamics (2018) in Canine Remedial Massage and Rehabilitation. I gained further qualifications in Veterinary Nursing Cert IV, Practical Rehabilitation for the Veterinary Industry Certificate and a Canine Remedial Massage Certificate. My clients come from many disciplines including Dancing with Dogs, Rally, Obedience, Herding, Show and Agility which has given me insight into many of the dog sport disciplines.
Throughout my time as a DogSA member, I have participated on the Agility Advisory committee, leaving committee to have a family and most recently taking on the role again in 2024. I want to give back to the dog community and represent the members and bring forward to council your concerns and ideas to ensure our dogs competing in all disciplines is as fun and successful as it can be. I will strive to support you and keep our State abreast of changes and progressions, so that we become aligned with the other states within Australia. Maybe its time for a change and fresh face!

The world is forever changing and our Dog World is not exempt. We must be proactive and make decisions which safeguard not only our current status but also ensures our future.
I like to look at the positive side of these changes and help implement them in a way that ensures that every member’s concerns and views are heard. With new disciplines and changes in direction of others, I believe an open rational approach is best. This mindset is also one that should be adopted when dealing with the many Government regulations and the daily running of Dogs SA.

I have been a member of Dogs SA for forty years.
I am an All Breeds Judge, Examiner/Assessor and the Conformation Judges Training Panel Group Co-Ordinator for the Toy group. I successfully breed and show Miniature Smooth Dachshunds and have a close involvement with several other breeds. I have taken early retirement after serving 35 years with the University of Adelaide.
CONNIE REDHEAD – Councillor
I have been a member of DOGS SA for over 55 years and have served the previous term on Dogs SA Council.
I am an All Breeds Judge and a member of the Conformation Judges Training Panel.
My husband and I ran a successful Boarding Kennel for many years until our recent retirement.
I was involved with working closely with local District Councils in overseeing lost and abandoned dogs were safely rescued. l am also an accredited Kennel Inspector ensuring the keeping and welfare of dogs are maintained to at least the minimum standards as prescribed by DOGS SA and South Australian Government Legislation.
Some years ago, I was instrumental in starting the Australian Cattle Dog Club which has run Amenities shows for Dogs SA. So far, some $12000 has been donated by the Club to Dogs SA to be used for Members benefit.
I am passionate about the dog world and believe that all disciplines should be nurtured and that all should be encouraged to grow, have input and work in harmony to create and maintain a flourishing dog world. I find it distressing that the current climate in the dog scene appears to be of a disruptive and toxic nature. It is my intention with the help of others to try and resolve these issues and have a more harmonious atmosphere for the benefit of all in the dog world.

Best of Breed / Challenge Certificates – as from 1st July 2025
Due to certificates now being available from either Easydogs or Show Manager, it is no longer a requirement for Conformation Clubs to print certificate for exhibitors that do not require a hard copy.
Application for Conformation Titles can now be applied for with the point list from either of the online providers and there is no requirement for the hard copy certificate when lodged in this manner.
As from 1st July 2025, Conformation Certificates may only be available only upon request at the event, on the day.
This enables exhibitors to continue applying for titles in the same manner they are familiar with if this is the preferred option.
If an exhibitor does not pick up their certificate on the day, the Club is not responsible to issue another one but can cooperate if they choose.
